Answer My Call Chapter 3 part 1
Happy WIP Wednesday! Answer My Call won by all one one vote last week. I was a bit nervous since I'm starting a new POV and I wasn't sure if I wanted to write from Tucker's POV or Tim's, but I settled on Tucker because it would let me dive into the action a bit sooner.
Story Summary: Danny's missing. The GIW have taken over Amity. Jazz, Tucker, and Sam are under constant surveillance and have been scattered across the country.
When Jazz's messages to Danny go to the wrong number, Red Hood decides to step in.

Tucker was alone in his dorm room working on homework. His desk was in the corner in a way that meant his computer screen faced the wall. It meant he had barely three feet of space to sit in, but after everything that had happened, he couldn’t let anyone sneak up behind him to spy on his work.
His roommate hated him for it because it took up so much extra space in their small room, but he was never around anyway, so Tucker didn’t really care what he thought.
He jumped when a loud knocking sounded on his door.
“Coming!” he called out as he took the time to save everything he had open and close all programs. He slammed it shut and squeezed out of his chair, half running to the door. “Sorry ‘bout the wait. Tyler isn’t here right now, I think he said something about spending time with Liz?”
Then he actually looked at the people at his door. The one was a broad boy wearing a spiked leather jacket over jeans. The other had a bulky sweatshirt on and a baseball cap. His face was shadowed as he was looking down at a tablet, typing away.
The bigger one was grinning at him. “You’re Tucker, right? We’re here to see you, not Tyler.”
Tucker blinked at them. “Why?” he asked, confused. People had given up on being friendly with him weeks ago.
The boy with the tablet huffed. “We’re here to invite you to our club.”
Tucker looked between them in confusion. “What?”
Tablet guy still didn’t look up. “We heard you like ghosts. We’re the officers of the student horror club and wanted to offer you a spot. Mind letting us in so we can tell you about it?”
Tucker rolled his eyes. “Look, I’m not interested in joining any clubs right now. Thanks, but no thanks.” He went to shut the door, but leather jacket stuck out his foot, keeping it from shutting.
“Just hear us out. We think you’d be perfect for it as an expert on ghosts.”
Tucker clenched his fists to hide their shaking. What did they know? Who sent them? He glared. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Tablet boy raised his head slightly, revealing a domino mask covering his eyes. He grinned, more a baring of teeth than anything. In a tone just loud enough to be heard, he said, “One of my associates is currently in Boston. I decided to come here instead.” In a normal ton he added, “Let me tell you about the horror club.”
Tucker’s mouth fell open. How? Boston? What had Jazz done? His eyes flitted down the hallway. But they were blocking his path and he wouldn’t be able to get past them. Dumbly, he stepped back, opening the door further.
Leather jacket grinned at him. “Thanks, dude,” he said.
Behind them, Tucker shut the door. His hand fell to his pocket where a lipstick laser was hidden.
Tablet boy was already pulling the blinds down over the window. When done, he handed his tablet to Tucker. It was open to a message that said: “We’re on your side. Turn off your devices. I’m going to set off a EMP and signal jammer.”
Tucker nodded and handed the tablet back.
Leather Jacket cleared his throat. “So, with the horror club, we meet once a week…”
Tucker only half-listened to his spiel. He used his phone to send a coded warning to Dani before turning it off. Then he went through his belongings and did the same to every laptop, PDA, tablet, and gaming system. If he turned on a ghostly recording device hidden inside an action figure, however, no one would know.
As soon as he was done, he nodded to Tablet Guy who pulled out a black cube from his backpack and pressed a button. The he pulled out another device and turned that on as well.
“That’s enough, Kon,” he said, pulling off his cap.
Leather Jacket—Kon?—grinned. “What, you don’t want to hear about my favorite horror movie, Rob?”
“I introduced you to your favorite horror movie. I know it as well as you do.”
Kon just laughed. Then he unzipped his jacket, revealing a blue outfit with Superman’s “S” on it.
“Holy shit,” breathed Tucker. What had Jazz done?
Tablet guy followed, pulling off his cap and removing his hoodie, revealing a red costume with a gold bird medallion in the center of his chest. “Nice to meet you, Tucker. I’m Red Robin, and this is Superboy. I’ve got some questions for you.”
Tucker’s eyes jumped between the two. “Holy shit,” he repeated.
Superboy laughed. “Didn’t expect to see us?”
Tucker could only shake his head. “You said Boston?” he asked.
“Red Hood is with Jazz as we speak. She asked for our help in rescuing Danny. We agreed.”
Tucker tensed. He was lying. They’d talked about reaching out to the Justice League dozens of times, but had decided they couldn’t be trusted. Jazz wouldn’t have gone to them. He reached into his pocked and pulled out the lipstick.
Both heroes tensed, though their wariness turned to confusion when they saw he only had a small lipstick tube.
Good, let them underestimate him. “Jazz wouldn’t go to the Justice League. We agreed it wasn’t safe. Why are you really here?”
Red Robin grinned at him and held up his hands. “All right, you’re right. I simplified for time’s sake. Jazz has been sending messages to a phone number she thought belonged to her brother Danny. But really, they were going to Red Hood. He’d been getting them for ages now, but was…out of town. As soon as he got back, he began looking into Amity and the GIW. When he couldn’t find anything, he brought me in on the case. When that still didn’t work, we called Jazz back. She decided to take a chance on us since Red Hood doesn’t work with the government. And, honestly, I’ve done quite a bit outside the law, too, even if I’m not as public about it.”
Tucker’s grip on the lipstick tightened and he stuck his nail under the cap, ready to flick it off at a moment’s notice. “Prove it.”
Red Robin pulled up his tablet again and tapped a few places. An audio recording started to play.
Tucker stopped breathing when he recognized Jazz’s voice. He closed his eyes and just listened. When he heard her demand a picture and the pose she asked for, he huffed out a laugh.
The recording ended and he slid the lipstick back into his pocket and wiped at his eyes.
“Okay, I believe you. What’s the plan?”
“Right now we want to make sure you, Jazz, and Sam are safe and find out as much information as we can.”
Tucker nodded. “I’m not as closely watched as Jazz. The school keeps close track of us students and the Guys in White rely on their records. Though they do have an agent stationed in admin who checks up on me at least once a week. I don’t keep my most sensitive belongings in this dorm as it’s searched every other week.”
Red Robin grinned at him. It sent shivers down Tucker’s back. “Does that mean your real stuff is kept somewhere else?”
Tucker smirked. “Of course. Cover yourselves back up; we need to go.”
Red Robin did something with his jammer and EMP and then began talking excitedly about the horror club again. “So glad you’ve agreed to come to our next meeting, Tucker! We’ve been trying to build the club.”
Superboy winked at him. “What do you say we get to know each other a bit before then? Want to come play video games with us?”
Tucker bit his lip and looked towards his desk and laptop as if he were undecided. “I should get back to my homework…”
“Oh, come on, it’ll still be there tomorrow,” said Red Robin. “Let’s go.” He looked back down at his tablet and headed towards the door, grabbing Tucker’s hand as he did.
Tucker looked over his shoulder one last time, but let himself be pulled along. They kept conversation light as they exited the building. Red Robin was an expert at angling his baseball cap to hide his masked face from every camera they passed.
Would he be willing to teach Tucker how to do that?
Once outside, Tucker took the lead. One of the first things he’d done after he’d been enrolled was memorize blueprints for every building on campus. On top of that, he’d made himself a good dozen different IDs. Three of those were copies of other students’. Those students he kept close track of to make sure their records didn’t show them in two places at once. Other ones belonged to various faculty and staff members. But his pride and joy was the one that belonged to Gabriel Carter. Gabriel was a janitor at the Academy and so could access any building. Gabriel also didn’t exist.
It was Gabriel’s ID that got them access to the basement level of one of the buildings. Hidden deep in the building was a set of rooms currently not in use. And in one of those rooms was a closet.
Tucker had built the locks on the door himself and, even having all the keys and codes, it took five minutes to get in.
He smirked when Red Robin himself let out a gasp of surprise at his set up.

Hope you enjoyed!
Now, how did Kon get involved? Easy. Tim used the zeta tube from the cave to Titans Tower. Kon happened to be there. When Tim said he was working a case with Red Hood, the guy who tried to kill him once, Kon insisted on coming along. I debated having other members of the Young Justice, but I'm actually trying to keep character counts down for this one, so...

For now, it's about 50/50 for whether or not these mysterious people that were included in the new trailer are members of the Gloriously Evolved. For fun, I'm going to break down why these people might be entirely unrelated to Viktor.
First, their bodies are clearly inlaid with gold, which does not replace their flesh. In the brief scene we get of these people the gold works as a conduit between their melodies and the magic around them. Meanwhile hexcore has entirely transformed Viktor's hand and leg into metal.
We know that Viktor's entire hand and leg have turned completely into metal because not only do his limbs make metal clinking noises and conduct electricity, but the animators on Bridging the Rift confirm it.
I've also seen some mention that the markings on the faces of these unknown characters represent Viktor's touch when he "healed" them. Upon closer inspection each character does have a five markings on their face, but they're detailed runes rather than Viktor's hand print, implying this may be related to a more intricate ritual rather than Viktor simply laying his hand on them and transforming them with the hexcore.
Really, these people have magic more similar to Mel Medarda. Mel is the one who appears to wear magical gold embedded in her skin to serve as protection magic. What Mel is doing with magic is likely far more simple compared to these people, but it's in the same vein. And that may be the entire point.
Viktor and his cult are the outliers. Whatever Viktor has done in season 1, and what he will continue to do in season 2 is a divergence (possibly perversion) of how magic should work/be treated in the rest of Runeterra, which makes sense! Viktor literally said he doesn't know what he's doing, he just keeps going.
What's likely happening in this scene is that some sect of mages, maybe they're acolytes of the mage that saved Jayce have become aware of the magical shenanigans in PnZ... and it's bad.
Then again, I haven't seen the leaks. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think this is all worth pointing out. (This is not a solicitation to tell what happens in the leaks).
#arcane#arcane meta#viktor arcane#mel medarda#i feel like people keep forgetting that viktor has the potential to be the most dangerous character in the cast#what Viktor's doing is is not normal magic it's an abberation#the stronger he gets the more the wider world becomes aware of what he's doing#for the first time i see that viktor has no toe nails anymore#ridiculous things i learn for my meta#it is pretty interesting to see that the mage from Jayce's memory is watching#the mage who us probably Ryze or something#is pnz the problem child of runeterra... it's more likely than you think#this could really create more interesting implications here#the ban on magic in pnz has essentially put everyone tbere at square 1 when it comes to figuring things out meanwhile#in other regions like demacia they may persecute mages but technically they didn’t ban all of it#what's considered magic is arbitrarily defined as an excuse to persecute others#so the governing body is still AWARE of how magic generally works and are more prepared for disaster (sort of)#but pnz really is just playing in the dark and calling it science

i have a historiographical quibble with how the antisemitic campaigns in the soviet union in 1948–1953 are often framed as an extension of the holocaust in the scholarship rather than being fully considered within the context of the soviet nationalities policy. except when i'm applying for funding from institutions that do holocaust studies. then i'm fine with it
#the dissertation proposal is still in the slightly amorphous stage but the gist of it is how the reshaping of jewish culture#by soviet authorities in the 1920s-30s affects jewish historical memory#and particularly how the survivors understood the 1948-1953 campaigns within the scope of jewish and soviet history#*now* we look at those campaigns and they fit neatly within the trends of jewish history#of being tenuously accepted and integrated into the mainstream and then persecuted#but at the same time it fits within the broader trends of the nationalities policy which was applied to jews in more or less the same way#as it was to other national minorities#and they were *all* subject to russification in the 1930s and suspicion over their alleged foreign ties#and especially with how the soviet government downplayed jews as the main targets of the holocaust#in a way that still persists in a lot of post-soviet states#coupled with the fact that most of the jews who survived the holocaust were secularized bc they weren't in the occupied territories#and secular soviet jewish culture was disconnected from the religious aspects and the stories of persecution and survival#in holidays like pesach and chanukah#which is all to say that the way scholars of jewish history understand these campaigns now isn't necessarily how#soviet jews understood them *then*#holocaust tw#soviet jewish history#jumblr

I’m sorry but you can’t cry “human rights violation!!!!” when you are actively carrying out a campaign of genocide.
#sorry but it doesn’t work like that!#you can’t decry humans rights violations of a group that doesn’t even represent a majority of innocent people (by the way)…#…if you are actively carrying out a genocide under the thinly veiled guise of going after that group#Genocide which is y’know one of the greatest violations of human rights since it seeks to completely eradicate one group of people.#like there are innocent people being caught in the crosshairs on both sides#not everyone living in Israel or who is Jewish supports the Israel government’s bombings of Gaza#not every Palestinian supports Hamas or condones their brutal attacks on innocent civilians#but to try and conflate the actions of a militant group to represent the thinking of all of the citizens and be an excuse to destroy them…#…isn’t right and deserves to be held accountable#also stop acting like there is not a massive power imbalance present#Israel has the Iron Dome and their own military forces and funding from the U.S.#Hamas has missels and stock piled resources from funding from Iran#Israel controls the food water fuel and medicine access to those that have been forced to live in Gaza#they are not in any way shape or form on equal footing which doesn’t make this a ‘war’#I can’t wrap my head around the fact that one of the groups persecuted in one of the most horrifying genocides is currently conducting…#…a genocide on another group of people#the rhetoric of gov’t officials from Israel dehumanizing innocent civilians points to the fact that this isn’t about retribution#but to conduct a genocide#if you don’t think that the current actions of the Israeli government aren’t wrong and are supporting it you can unfollow and block me!#like it’s not black and white but the actions that are currently happening are not acceptable

i have a sickening feeling that once israel ceases to be politically beneficial to western countries the governments will try to use it as a way to once again scapegoat Jewish people
#free palestine#gaza#from the river to the sea palestine will be free#israel#palestine#genocide#like the ridiculous anti-semistism law is actually a don’t criticize israel law#as if the us government would ever actually protect jewish people#and the fact that jewish people denounce zionism and attend protests is proof of how its colonizer mentality#like their are jewish people in israel right now protesting and being silenced by their government where is their protection?#where was the protection for the orthodox jewish men who were brutally beaten in the streets by military officers?#where is the protection for palestinian jews?#fuck zionism all my homies hate zionism#it’s so horrifying that the tyrannical politicians who benefit from genocide will never see true justice#but the ordinary people who try to stop it take the damage#and of course the absolute horror palestinians are facing is unspeakable#i hope all those poor souls are resting in paradise and their persecution is ended soon

I think what a lot of people don't understand is that the cultural and societal aspects of religion can still exist in a society that is 100% secular. Most atheists aren't anti-theists, in fact, most of them still take part in many religious customs and celebrations in a secular form. Anti-theism doesn't even mean the eradication of religion, it's typically used to describe the intellectual opposition to belief in a deity,
So, I'm honestly perplexed whenever I see people arguing that the "end goal" of atheism is to eradicate religion, this is something both religious people and ill-informed atheists believe, for some reason. I guess this is what happens when Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris are your go-to atheists and you're measuring atheism against the most extreme religious zealots because that's what most people are reactive towards.
What should be completely removed are almost all forms of institutionalized religion and religious power structures. These are the exactual oppressive structures that have used religion as a tool to justify every form of bigotry and crime against humanity. They are also not essential to the practice of the religion or the survival of the religious culture. Your right to practice your religion ends if you're using said religion to advocate for the oppression of Muslims (assuming you're not practicing Islam), atheists, LGBT+ people, and other minorities. You can be a church-going Catholic without advocating for state-sanctioned religion or the rights of others being removed. This evangelical breed of religious extremism has no place in society and is what actually leads to real genocides happening today.
#non royal#text#also people really do act as if atheists are persecuting religious folks by being annoying and edgy#in my opinion it's like comparing islamophobia to a dislike of Christianity in canada/america#one is a form of dangerous systemic bigotry that kills and the other is at most being rude/ignorant#the religious majority always prosecutes religious minorities including atheists#i'm serious that atheist persecution is an actual problem and the rights of irreligious people are neglected#if you look at how atheists are treated in many religious communities and by evangelical governments there is no comparison#and they have little to no institutional power to fight for their rights as a group#in the US state governments are often times trying to institutionalize religion in ways that harm muslims atheists and all nonevangelicals#the things ron desantis and other republicans have said about atheists would make me feel unsafe living in their states as an atheist

wip intro/masterpost - the raedoran cycle
hi hello here it is. my baby.
genre: fantasy
pov: third person limited, with various narrators throughout
status: a series of 4 novels/stories, in various states of drafting
summary: in one night, Raedora is thrown into chaos. the royal librarian murders the queen and her youngest daughter with magic and flees, leaving behind the king and the crown princess to pick up the pieces. the princess spirals slowly into madness as her sworn shield tries to save her, terrified of her dead sister's prophecy.
two thieves in the capital set their sights on the crown jewels after attending the queen's coronation. but when one gets a little too reckless and catches the attention of the Mad Dog of Morbhard, their plans quickly go off the rails.
when their parents are killed in the Dragon Purges, two shapeshifters must hide amongst their killers to survive. one, a talented healer, tries to build a life that will be safe for them, but her little brother has his sights set on avenging their parents by murdering the queen that ordered their deaths.
a young witch is raised alone by her father, always in hiding, with strange dreams and visions of the future. when he dies of an illness even her magic can't heal, she must strike out on her own, searching for answers to the prophecy that has followed her for her whole life.
tag: the raedoran cycle
so originally this was one novel following multiple characters, but thanks to a minor plot bunny that greatly spiraled out of control (lacuna) it has become something much more. many of the four novels' events occur simultaneously, with their stories overlapping and intertwining as the character's lives do the same.
the knight of lacuna lake
Keelan: baby boy war criminal. he narrates the story as he tries to save Maura from herself.
Maura: the golden queen of Raedora. she lost half her family in 1 night and handed it incredibly well all things considered (no she didn't)
status: first draft finished(!!), shelved while it marinates and i work on the rest of the cycle. likely going to come back and edit it at some point but for now it is what it is
tag: lacuna
the thieves of morbhard
Arthur: master lockpick and ball of anxiety. he narrates his attempts to get Jack to notice him while also trying to steal the crown jewels.
Jack: cursed damned street rat. born on the night of the triple new moon and condemned to a life on the streets, he's got his sights set on stealing enough to get both him and Arthur out of Morbhard for good.
status: just barely starting to draft. fully outlined.
tag: thieves
the dragons of kiltide
Emilia: the only voice of reason around here. a talented healer fighting to protect her baby brother from both the persecution they face in their homeland and the Purges that killed their parents.
Fabin: teenage ball of rage. his parents died in front of him when he was 13 and he has been supremely chill about it since then and doesn't everybody sleep with their sword under their bed?
status: outlining with the occasional scene.
tag: dragons
the witch of the west
Birdie: a talented witch born under and blessed by the full silver moon. raised by her father in the woods after fleeing the witch trials, she is determined to understand and fulfill her prophecy. her strange dreams of dragons, thieves, and knights lead her to a search for the people who she believes will help her in her journey.
status: it's complicated. this where all the original material lives for the most part so it's outlined(sort of??) and i've been writing scenes for it but idk what the actual timeline of events is and i've changed a LOT since i started. so it's a frankendraft mess. we'll get there eventually.
tag: the witch
and that's it! that's my baby! i think about Them a lot these days.
taglist: ask to be added <3 @k--havok @theharpywrites

It's wild that most americans view cars as freedom machines when the ability to drive one without subjecting one's self to interactions with aggressively bored cops is predicated on regularly providing multiple bureaucratic agencies with copious amounts of paperwork attesting to your living, relationship, and employment statuses and likely whereabouts. A good bicycle and a decent bus network will give you more freedom in your city than a car ever could. A decent rail network and a good bicycle would unlock the whole country.
#The onerousness of the dmv and dld#Get a bike!#And disproportionately the same people lining up for a third car are also always on about small government#but also scream about the importance of infallible identification#I try not to use terms like carbrain#but I really just can't stand oblivious hypocrites with persecution complexes not born out by reality or their own actions

I know I posted about Cry Freedom a couple months ago but like please watch Cry Freedom. It's an excellent movie that was literally created as a political anti-apartheid movie and its central story is a white liberal being radicalized. There's been a lot of talk about South Africa lately and I think this movie would fit in well with that.
#also it's great!!!!#i am not exaggerating btw it's literally about donald woods a self-identified white liberal#being like 'welllll you guys are too extreme and anti-white'#and then meeting steve biko and other activists and learning and changing his mind#and getting persecuted by the government and having to flee the country#AND it's a true story

The weaponization of the government is a real and growing threat. It is impossible to overstate the grave threat this poses to our Constitutional rights and freedoms. This continuing abuse of government power and authority to punish political opponents is eroding the legitimacy of our Republic. We cannot allow this to continue.

I hadn't realized it at first because it just sounded like there were a lot of women in the setting, but I think the language the protag and the empire uses only has one pronoun, and it's 'translated' to english as 'she'. The protag talks about the relative complexity of addressing other characters in different languages when she needs to recognize their gender identity and other social identifiers (i.e. age, relatedness to other characters) in order to speak properly to them. She specifically identifies several characters as male and says she addresses them correctly, but since the narrative is told in that imperial language, what WE hear is everyone being called 'she'. Binary gendered pronouns (and the ocasional 'they') tend to be treated as universal in english writing since thats how conventional english works and anything outside of that is treated as as alien, so it's neat to see this linguistic approach in an english language novel. This author's previous book the raven tower featured an extremely unique pov so it's really cool to see another creative approach from her re: language.
the narrator is pulling out the most random accents. like I can barely understand her. I have NO idea where she is getting these
The main character's closest supervisor, a local imperial governor, is being depicted as fairly sympathetic to the discriminated-against minority of the planet they conquered. Obviously in real life no place was perfect before colonization but conquerers were more likely to use pre-existing prejudices to pit colonized peoples against each other, not swoop in and deliver them all equal rights and guaranteed food. It's a strange choice for member of a canonically genocidal military force.
#not to sound like I want to read about the horrors but if you sanitize imperial conquest#that's both deeply ahistorical and has awful implications#like this government is hideously evil idk why the author wants to make this person so defensive of this persecuted minority#it's not like her government would realistically care#and do we NEED a sympathetic imperial footsoldier? shoot your commander then we'll talk#cor reads

I hate tiktok and short-form content for many reasons but the main one is that it's made conspiracy and doomsday-prepper rhetoric so easily accessible. as someone who's life has been affected in a big way by that kind of ideology, it's extremely dangerous and absolutely should not be promoted, but because it generates clicks and views the algorithm continues to push bad-faith misinformation bullshit designed to exacerbate paranoia and delusions in people who really don't need more of that in their lives. god. I know it's funny to laugh and point at tiktoks about how Jack and the Beanstalk is real and a story cautioning against the giant demon-hybrids who control the government but people believe that shit and genuinely this kind of thing ruins lives. the target audience of these videos are real people with families and friends who are affected by this ideology, especially kids with conspiracy theorist parents. there's no real thesis to this but, fuck. I'm so tired of seeing that shit.
#especially conspiracies that are masked as Christian or faith-based#preying on the western Christians who so desperately need to feel persecuted#that they accept without question that everyone in our government is in league with demonic forces#jay says a thing#i have so many people close to me that have fallen down this hole#most of them people with a history of paranoia and delusions#its heartbreaking and there's nothing you can do about it after the fact#if you get to them early on theres a chance but most people dont because they dont realize how dangerous and steep the rabbit hole is
