Okay, so here is The Big Deal present I got from Brian for our anniversary yesterday; and actual bronze (19th anniversary) Roman coin from c. 240 CE. He went total deep dive and researched all these emperors and the Roman minting processes and everything to pick out the best one and chose Gordian III because he was one, affordable (Brian said he did NOT have to pay the appraised amount on the back label, but rather that it was "reasonable") but also because Gordian III didn't have a particularly bloody story like his predecessors did. (The other coin he was considering was face value 4-5 times as much as this one, but the guy had like a HUGE massacre under his belt.)
But anyway he was like completely taken by the idea because, well, "bronze" gifts are normally something stupid like engraved platters and stuff, compared to an actual ancient coin that's been thru God knows how many hands and maybe it stayed in Rome proper, but maybe it went to all these far-flung parts of the empire and was traded in Egypt, or Gaul, or wherever.
But yeah, I think it's neat, even if he says it's not the "real" part of my gift this year. (He says my commissions are my "real" anniversary and Christmas gifts, but I just bought those with my Christmas bonus money. It makes him feel better about not spending "as much" on gifts tho so I let him believe that's what the commissions are.)
Edit to add: I want to break open the seal and actually hold this coin SO BADLY but I'm being good and keeping it protected so it doesn't get bronze disease.

Aureus Portraying Emperor Gordian III
Gordian III AV Aureus Rome, AD 239-240 5.16g, 21mm
Gordian III (Latin: Marcus Antonius Gordianus; 20 January 225 – c. February 244) was Roman emperor from 238 to 244. At the age of 13, he became the youngest sole emperor of the united Roman Empire. Gordian was the son of Antonia Gordiana and Junius Balbus, who died before 238. Antonia Gordiana was the daughter of Emperor Gordian I and younger sister of Emperor Gordian II. Very little is known of his early life before his acclamation. Gordian had assumed the name of his maternal grandfather in 238.

Plotinus
Plotinus (c. 204-270) was a Platonic philosopher born in Lycopolis, Egypt. Although the story of his life was written down by his student Porphyry, few biographical details are included because Plotinus rejected the physical world of appearances in favor of the realm of the mind, considereding trivialites such as birth date, family, and ancestry unworthy of mention.
At the age of 28, he began a course of study with the Platonist Ammonius Saccas that deeply impacted his life. Already a student of philosophy, Plotinus devoted himself fully to the discipline, absorbing Plato's Dialogues and his teacher's commentary on them. Plotinus' concept of the Divine Mind and the purpose of mortal existence exerted tremendous influence on all three of the world's great monotheistic religions and, for this reason, many consider him the most significant philosopher of the ancient world.
He is the founder of the school of thought known as Neo-Platonism; a significant number of famous ancient writers, theologians, politicians, generals, and philosophers are now recognized as Neo-Platonists, although they would not have referred to themselves by that label. Plotinus' philosophy was recorded in the Enneads by Porphyry; he wrote nothing himself. He died in Rome at the age of 66.
Early Life and Travel
Plotinus' birthplace at the Greek colony of Lycopolis, Egypt suggests he was probably Greek but this is uncertain. All that is known of his life is what he allowed his student Porphyry to record. In his late twenties, pursuing an interest in philosophy, Plotinus went to Alexandria, which was then an intellectual centre rivaling Athens. He was disappointed with the plebian philosophies he heard being taught as 'profound truths' and was steadily becoming more and more frustrated and disillusioned when a friend suggested he come to a talk by the Platonic philosopher Ammonius Saccas who was also the teacher of the Christian theologian Origen.
Plotinus went to the lecture and immediately declared that Saccas was the teacher he had been seeking all his life. After ten years of study under Saccas, Plotinus joined the military campagin of Emperor Gordian III to Persia in order to learn Persian and Indian philosophy. When Gordian was assassinated by his troops, and the campaign fell apart, Plotinus traveled to Antioch and then on to Rome where he remained for the rest of his life.

Does Anyone "Deserve" Redemption?
Fandom discourse often focuses on whether certain characters deserve to be redeemed. Online fandoms for kid-friendly cartoons (such as Avatar, MLP:FiM, She-Ra, and Steven Universe) seem especially likely to feature intense debates on that topic.
Every time those debates seems to follow the same patterns, so I want to talk about them generally.
One of those patterns is being wrong. Not that everyone involved is wrong, but the debate itself is wrong.
(The framework below is based on real life and then presumed to apply to fiction — just like most criticisms I have seen of fictional redemption arcs.)
I. Is "Deserving Redemption" Contradictory?
Trying to decide who does or doesn't deserve redemption is hard. Factoring in every detail about someone's situation, relationships, history, and moral character to determine what they truly deserve is always a Gordian knot of complexity. Let's start by considering a few simple reasonable statements about ethics:
Every person should be a good person.
"Redemption" means becoming a good (or at least better) person.
Every person should get exactly what they deserve.
Some bad people are so bad that they do not deserve redemption.
From #1 it follows that every person should become better, and that every bad person should be a good person. Put those together with #2 and you get "Every bad person should get redemption."
Put together #3 and #4, though, and you get "Some bad people should not get redemption." #3 and #4 contradict #1 and #2, so at least one of them is wrong. Which?
#1 and #2 strike me as true by definition:
Something is “good” if it is what it should be, so every person should be a good person.
A person who is considered successfully “redeemed” is basically always considered a better person than they were before.
If we accept #3 and #4, then bad people can only deserve redemption by becoming good enough to deserve it. They must become better — but that's what “redemption” means!
Restated a final time, if redemption is making a bad person into a good(/better) person, and someone only deserves redemption by already being a good(/better) enough person, then nobody deserves redemption at all!
But some people should be redeemed. On that point I expect everyone here to agree.
Since #1 and #2 are true, #3 and #4 cannot both be true. We must reject at least one of them. Why not both?
II. Should We Even Say "Deserve"?
I propose scrapping the idea that some people ""deserve"" bad things and do not ""deserve"" good things. We do not even need to use the word ""deserve."" Everyone should become better because becoming better is good, regardless of what anyone ""deserves.""
In my experience the word ""deserve"" has been worse than useless, mostly just causing confusion and rationalizing punitive/vengeful feelings. Conversations about redemption, punishment, and rehabilitation would often benefit from never using the word ""deserve"" at all. Then we can talk about whether trying to redeem someone is helpful.
Everybody (or nobody) ""deserves"" redemption because, at least in my view, the idea that anyone ""deserves"" bad things or does not ""deserve"" good things is usually an unhelpful idea. Throwing it out can give us an even better value system, one which prioritizes harm reduction and helping everyone flourish.
Sometimes punishment is part of redemption. Sometimes it is not. Sometimes punishing a "bad person" makes them worse, and sometimes rehabilitating a "bad person" with zero punishment makes them better. In those cases, punishing the "bad person" is simply unhelpful and so it is wrong.
III. Should Anyone Try To Redeem Their Abuser(s)?
No.
I want to clarify that trying to "redeem" bad people can still go horribly wrong sometimes. Sometimes, trying to redeem someone is not worth the effort. Sometimes that effort is better spent trying to escape from, or remove, that person's power. For example, abuse victim(s) trying to "redeem" or "fix" their abuser(s) is generally a terrible idea.
"Redeeming" someone who abuses their power over other people generally starts by taking away that power. If someone genuinely wants redemption, then they can prove it by giving up their power. If someone does not want redemption, then they cannot be trusted with that power.
Abusers characteristically leverage their relationships with people for power over them. Trying to "redeem" someone by letting them abuse you will basically always fail, as many people have learned the hard way. Arguably it is impossible.
Even if everyone can and should be redeemed, that does not mean that you can redeem them if they refuse to change for the better. Abuse victims should escape if (safely) possible, and in some cases incapacitate their abuser(s), to reduce harm by preventing future abuse.
IV. Caveats: An Incomplete List of Important Factors I Did Not Address in This Post
"Redemption arcs" are a storytelling trope in fiction which often serve a very different purpose than real-life people pursuing self-improvement. Although I believe that the argument above applies to claims about what fictional characters do(n't) ""deserve,"" other factors may limit its application.
If someone defines "redemption" differently than I did above, e.g. as improving someone’s reputation instead of their character, the discussion becomes very different.
In this post I use the word "redemption" interchangeably with "rehabilitation."
The concept of "redemption" originates from, and remains heavily influenced by, a Christian ethical framework. Christian ethics focuses on doing what the Christian god commands. Typically that interpreted to include prioritizing interpersonal forgiveness over harm reduction. But I don't. I do not endorse or recommend using a Christian ethical framework.

The Most Mysterious Emperor to (probably never) Exist.
In 1713, The inspector of medals for the holy roman emperor, Carl Gustav Heraeus would note that 8 strange looking gold coins had come into the possession of the Imperial Collection of Vienna. Carl had apparently acquired these coins from the Hapsburg finance minister Johann David von Palm, who in turn had gotten them from a supposed hoard found in Transylvania. The hoard mainly consisted of an assortment of strange types, ranging from a large gold coin of Gordian III to strange "aurei" of Philip that use a republican obverse, and even a whole gold version of an old Republican denarius.
The coins themselves are all very odd, but one type among them stands out for being the strangest of them all, that being the gold coins of the emperor Sponsian, who was unrecorded in history up until the hoard's discovery, and who presumably had all of the hoard coins minted to pay either his soldiers or officials. Sponsian's gold coins are extremely odd to say the least, and the following is a list of all the details about the coin that differ from the normal imperial issues of the time. 1. The weight is extremely heavy for Roman gold coins, the known Sponsian coins range from weighing 9 to 11 grams. No official Roman or barbarian imitation gold coins weigh that much.
2. The obverse of the Sponsian coin is strange in a few ways. As noted above, the weight is far too heavy to be an aureus, therefore it is speculated that the coins are of the binio / double aureus denomination due to the radiate crown on Sponsian's head, which on Roman coins is indicative of a double denomination. It is more likely that they are supposed to be donative coins meant to pay senior officers, although typical donative coins were usually made with spectacular engraving, and the Sponsian coins are just about as far off from that as possible. The way the legend is lumped to one side of the coin is also never seen on any other official imperial 3rd century issues. 3. The reverse is arguably stranger than the obverse, as it uses a very old Republican design from 135 B.C.
This original republican denarius was meant to commemorate a grain donative and struck by a certain Caius Augurinus, whose name can be seen at the top of the reverse "C AVG". The use of republican reverses on 3rd century era coinage is unheard of (especially extremely obscure ones such as this), with the Sponsian coins being the only exception. Could Sponsian be calling back to his republican era ancestor Caius? Not likely. If these coins are from the 3rd century, the most plausible explanation is that whoever had them engraved for Sponsian had the Republican denarius on hand as a reference and assumed that the "C AVG" on the reverse meant "Caesar Augustus". The Philip coins that were found in the hoard support the theory that the engraver had the Caius Augurinus denarius as a model, since those coins use the obverse of the republican denarius for their design.
4. The Sponsian coins are undoubtedly cast, which is typically indicative of a fake coin. The problem with the coins being cast is that no 3rd century coins were ever cast, as all official issues were always struck. There is also no hoard evidence of more Sponsian coins. Another emperor that was proven to exist was Domitian II, who was also brushed off by some numismatists as being a fake (the theory being that his coins were tooled issues of Tetricus) but another example of his coinage was unearthed in a hoard of undoubtedly genuine coins later on, finally proving his existence. If more Sponsian coins are found in a hoard containing genuine coins, it could possibly be evidence that the coins are from antiquity. (it is noteworthy that the coins of Domitian II are not nearly as weird as Sponsian's coins, and are much easier to accept as real). We don't know anything about the initial discovery of the Transylvania hoard and we don't even know exactly how many coins were found, but throughout the 18th century the hoard would be dispersed into collections across Europe. During the period from the hoard's discovery and 2020, many numismatists had the chance to speak on the Sponsian coins. Their theories on the mysterious pieces ranged from the coins being Barbarian imitations, to the coins being blatant 17th century forgeries. But amidst the limited discussion during the years after 1713 surrounding the Sponsian coins, a general aura of mystery still was associated with them. In 2020, light discussion on the Sponsian popped up again, this time on a Coin discussion forum. At this point Sponsian was very obscure, with only one photo of one of his coins being known at the start of the thread, the same photo was the one being used by Wikipedia on their page about Sponsian.
The initial discussion mainly surrounded Sponsian's strange name and trying to find more drawings / photos of the Sponsian coins. In comes Professor Paul Pearson, who finds more photos of the Sponsian coins, and eventually requests the Hunterian museum to take the photo at the very top of this post. It is my belief that Pearson was inspired to write his famous paper on Sponsian because of his interest in this thread. Fast forward to 2022, Pearson's paper comes out and proves that the Sponsian coins are ancient and NOT 17th century fakes. The way Pearson concluded they were real was by analyzing the wear patterns and comparing them to some other genuine gold coins of the period in the same museum. Towards the end of the paper he also theorizes that Sponsian was a rebel in Dacia during the reign of Gallienus, and made these coins to pay his officers. Alright, now I'm going to need you to forget the narrative that Sponsian ever actually existed. See, in order for a newly discovered emperor on a roman coin to even remotely be considered as genuine, the coins bearing their name and image at the very least have to follow the specific patterns that other known 3rd century issues follow. If you're a roman usurper trying to prove legitimacy, one of the first things you do is mint coins bearing your image and name in the typical imperial style to pay your troops. The coins would also have to be similar weights to those of official issue, to make sure they could function properly in the Roman economy. For example, take the emperor Silbannacus. He follows the same story as Sponsian in the sense that he was not recorded in any historical record until the discovery of his coins. But instead of being widely criticized by Numismatists for being a fraud, the majority of the Numismatic community is far less skeptical of his coins for the very reason that they followed all the right patterns when it came to Imperial coinage. There is just way too many weird things going on with the Sponsian coins. All of the right patterns that the Silbannacus and Domitian II coins follow, the Sponsian coins throw out the window. From the coins being far too heavy, the use of the Republican era reverse, the fact that they're cast. Nothing here adds up. There are flaws with Pearson's conclusion about the coins being a genuine product from a 3rd century usurper. Although his analysis of the coin's history is solid, the means of determining the coins are from antiquity kind of fall apart when scrutinized.
For one, you can't prove a coin is ancient just because it has scratches on it that are similar to ones on an ancient coin. There is just no definitive way to date the wear on the Sponsian coins. Wear can also be easily faked, Pearson even admits this in his paper, as he brings up the forger Carl Wilhelm Becker and how he used iron filings to fake wear on his coins as an example. It is also important to remember that they were in various collections during the 300 years since they were found, and during that time there is a possibility that they were handled carelessly by numismatists and others due to the fact proper precautions for handling ancient coins were not in place during those years. The wear could've developed from them. The study done on the earthen deposits is also quite flimsy, there is simply not enough research on deposits in general, and the research conducted on them in Pearson's paper is too surface level to prove much. We don't know how long those deposits take to form, we don't know if they were formed in the ground or during the coin's stay in the Hunterian collection etc etc. It's very silly to immediately jump to the conclusion that Sponsian was real just because of these few flimsy points in the face of all of the things alluding to the coins being fake. During the period after the paper's publication and the media coverage of Sponsian, many rebuttals would be made by numismatists and Roman historians alike, but one series of videos that I followed made by Guy de la Bédoyère covering Sponsian pointed out even more solid evidence against Sponsian. In the last part of his series (and the only one left public on his yt channel) Guy talks about a book that he recently reread written a bit before the Sponsian hoard's discovery by a scholar named John Evelyn. In one of the chapters pertaining to fakes, Evelyn mentions a hoard of heavy gold forgeries imitating Roman issues discovered during the siege of Bonn in 1673. Later on, while listing off Emperors that were commonly faked, he states "and to these add such as borrow the head of some emperor with some fantastic reverse, or enigmatical inscription, which has no relation to the person, or appertain to some other, or seeming to historize some new and extravagant thing, never heard nor read in any good author before". (I highly recommend checking out Guy's full video, I'll have it linked at the end) The Bonn hoard of coins as well as Evelyn's description of fantasy fakes is solid evidence that forgeries similar in style and manufacture of the Sponsian pieces did exist in the 17th and 18th centuries. Although I'm a firm believer that the coins are fake, at this point this mystery technically isn't 100 percent solved until better research on the earthen deposits is conducted, or if a new hoard of Sponsian coins is found alongside genuine issues. Sources linked below, highly recommend reading then / watching them if you're interested in Sponsian.

Today the Church remembers St. Pontius of Rome, Martyr.
Ora pro nobis.
St. Pontius lived during the third century AD, the son of the pagan Roman senator Marcus and his wife Julia. While with child, Julia had gone with her husband to the temple of Jupiter. Upon seeing the pregnant Julia, the pagan priest suddenly shouted out that the boy in Julia’s womb would destroy Jupiter and his pagan temple. When the boy was born, his mother wanted to kill him out of fear of the prediction, but his father opposed this and the child was left to live. He was named Pontius, and he grew up sharp of mind and eager for study.
On his way to the pagan school, Pontius happened to go past a house, where Christians were attending the morning services. Hearing the words of the Psalm which the Christians were singing: “the idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the works of men’s hands” (Ps. 114/115: 4 and Ps. 134 /135: 15 ). Pontius became very interested in this verse and he paused at the gate.
Saint Pontian, who was celebrating the service, invited Pontius and his companion Valerian to come in. After the service, the bishop talked for a long while with the youths, revealing to them the Gospel teachings, and after a certain while he baptized them. Saint Pontius, in turn, converted his father to Christ, whom Saint Pontian also baptized, together with his whole household.
After the death of his father, Saint Pontius, then 20 years old, was appointed by the emperor Severus Alexander (222-235 AD) as a senator, to take the place of his deceased father. In the Senate and the surroundings of the emperor, Saint Pontius enjoyed universal esteem for his good nature, sound sense, and fairness. When emperor Severus died, a period of profound instability wracked the Roman empire, known as the Crisis of the Third Century, which included nearly fifty years of civil war, foreign invasion, and the collapse of the monetary economy.
Under the successor to the emperor Alexander Severus, Maximinus’ brief rule (235-238 AD) was marked by chaos. In 238 AD (which came to be known as the Year of the Six Emperors), a senatorial revolt broke out, leading to the successive proclamation of Gordian I, Gordian II, Pupienus, Balbinus, and Gordian III as emperors in opposition to Maximinus. Maximinus advanced on Rome to put down the revolt, but was halted at Aquileia, where he was assassinated by disaffected elements of the Legio II Parthica. It was in this period of chaos that any who were deemed disloyal to the emperor or to the stability of Roman life were singled out. Christians, in particular, we’re accused of being disloyal for abandoning the ancient traditions of Rome. St. Pontian was accused of being a Christian, and therefore an enemy of the state. When put on trial, he was offered the opportunity to recant his Christian Faith and to te-embrace the gods of Rome. He steadfastly refused to renounce Jesus. Saint Pontian finished his life as a martyr, being condemned to death by beheading c. 237 AD.
Almighty God, who gave to your servant Pontius boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

Literally my view on Plotinus (204-270CE). The guy was a Greek Platonist Philosopher. He tagged along with the Roman army under Gordian III during an invasion into Persian lands and witnessed the Romans get absolutely sandbagged, the army is slaughtered in a retreat and Gordian III supposedly dies falling off a horse or killed by his own men. Initially Plotinus joined so he could meet Eastern philosophers, but ends up witnessing a massacre and then being stuck behind enemy lines traveling more or less alone trying to get back to his home.
He must have had like some PTSD from that. Spent rest of his life teaching how to live a ascetic life to achieve wholeness with "the one." Often secluding himself to meditate. He was very popular with his students and among nobles.
that's right i will incorporate that into my worldview
