Tumblr media
Deadpool & Wolverine Press tour - Hot Ones
Hugh felt like he was going to die. Each wing was getting hotter and hotter, but immediately when he heard his wife’s name he forgot all about the spice.
“Hugh, your wife is part of the Avengers, how does it feel having your wife be part of such a huge franchise? Have you two talked about a potential team up with the X-men and the Avengers?” Sean asked.
“My wife . . . Oh god, I think I’m crying-”
“I can’t tell if you’re legitimately dying or completely in love with your wife.” Ryan told Hugh.
“Wait . . I am completely in love with my wife and I would legitimately die for her.” Hugh gasped as he rearranged Ryan’s words.
“Is that in the contract she made you sign when you married her? ‘I vow to die for you’. My contract said I had to give all my money to my kids and wife.” Ryan said.
“No, she’s amazing, um, if I start talking about her I think I might go on for hours,” he laughed. “Our kids do want to see their parents fighting the bad guys together. We would love to team up, maybe it could happen.” Hugh smiled.
“The entire movie would be them making out and her beating the shit out of you. I’d pay to see that.” Ryan added.

Comic Con 2024
Like RDJ, your last Marvel movie had been Avengers: Endgame. After being in ten mcu films, it was time to say goodbye to your character.
But that was in 2019.
At this years comic con, you were back. The cast of Deadpool & Wolverine had taken the stage and showed their appreciation for the fans. After their panel, it was time to announce Marvel’s upcoming projects. Kevin Feige announced the Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, Captain America 4, and finally the new Avengers movies, which everyone was extremely excited about.
After showing the title card for the upcoming Avengers film, Kevin turned to the audience.
“Something people have been asking, as of late, is who the heck is going to direct these two movies?” The audience clapped.
From the side of the stage, you were nervous. What if the fans didn’t like the idea of you directing the next two Avengers films? Your worrying caused Hugh to come to your rescue.
“Hey, they loved you as an Avenger, they will love you even more.” Hugh kissed your forehead. “If anyone says anything about this decision, they have me to deal with.”
You laughed at his words. “I really love you so much.”
“Love you too, bub.” Hugh was about to kiss you when Ryan cut in.
“I really love us too. I convinced half of the people here that we’re a throuple.” He said in the most serious tone ever.
Kevin announced you as the director. Your doubt of the fans not liking the announcement was proven wrong when you walked the stairs to the stage and stood next to Kevin. They cheered when they saw you were back.
As you said a few words, thanking Marvel, Kevin and the fans, you were being recorded by Hugh, who was being recorded by Ryan.
“That’s my wife!” Hugh cheered from backstage, holding his phone in his hand.
“She’s Marvel Jesus now, holy shit!”
•••
WIRED autocomplete interview
“Is Hugh Jackman married?”
“Yes, to me, Y/n, probably to half the population,” Ryan answered. “He’s Australia’s biggest slut.”
“All the times, I proposed.” Hugh laughed. “But yes, I am married and I love my wife very much. She’s stuck with me forever.” He lifted his hand to show off the wedding band.
“Funny, because she texted me right now. Her and Blake are in the courthouse getting married. So Deadpool three was actually made so our wives could divorce us and marry each other.”

due 11:59 pm
— alternatively, enhypen hyungs as your typical high school crush!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PAIR. high school! enhypen hyungs x gn!reader (rest under cut) GENRE. fluff, high school au, bullet points WORD COUNT. 1.8k total MAKNAE LINE VER.
이희승 — lee heeseung
varsity jackets, notes in lockers, late night calls, secret pining, basketball games
secretly (not so secretly) an attention seeker
he's on the varsity basketball team, so by law you're hyping him up (disguised as hyping up the whole team) before the game and now he has to win!!! (plus he made a bet with jay about the team's winning streak)
i'd think that you two are closer than acquaintances but don't know each other well enough to be close friends
you guys probably met through mutual friends groups that kind of merged????
it was junior year when he signed up for every ap class you took just to look at your face more often.
horrible move for his gpa, amazing move for his mental well-being
... that was, until his mental well-being was compromised again because his ap calc grades were... not sexy
"help like actually i don't think my coach will let me stay on the team if i fail another quiz like that 0.05% grade decrease might be the end of my career"
you start tutoring him not because you're super confident about your calc skills, but because 1) you're better than him at least 😂and 2) it's a free excuse to hang out with him after school
you guys have your first tutoring sessions over discord vc btw like LOSERS
"can you hear me okay"
"..."
"dude you're muted"
IT WAS BAD
he's got the popular guy on the outside, an absolute loser on the inside persona
like he's lowkey a romantically awkward dude
but once he got to know you a bit more from your 1 on 1 time (still on discord.) you guys got really close!
would talk shit together right before basketball matches too
"[name] make sure to start booing when the other team shows up because unfortunately i think they're actually really good"
you're really passionate about how the other schools have horrible players (regardless of stats) and love to narrate a play-by-play with heeseung after the match is over
he finally confessed to you after a whole business year (jake and riki were about to dox their private dms by then)
you guys are like those stereotypical high school movie it couples, where it seems like two gorgeous popular people fell in love
they don't need to know he's just a hopeless romantic!!
박종성 — park jongseong
blue ink, keyboard clicks, shared laughs, handwritten notes, guitar strings
you thought he was pretty intimidating at first ngl
first day of school and he has a whole pre-established friend group, somehow found a table to sit at, has an effortless air going for him
you were paired up with him for a group project in history and
god help this man is SO straightforward and to the point
"ok so i'll do this part and you can do those parts. let me know if you have questions."
insert working in SILENCE for the next hour and a half
at least you two got your work done though!
but then, as an icebreaker in the last ten minutes of class you asked:
"oh... so, uh, do you ever wonder how liquid soap was invented?"
girl wtf!
your internal thought processing was like ??? damn who said that??? before you realized it was YOU
fortunately for you, jay was not completely weirded out!
he even looked a bit interested!
VERY interested, actually!
and that's how he began google searching like crazy, pulling up a million wikipedia articles and scouring the internet to answer your question
because how did you know he was curious about that too!
he really went from 0 to 100 and wdym you thought this man was cold and stoic
he became a d1 yapper for a solid ten minutes, up until the second the bell rang
he was even subconsciously walking with you to your lunch spot, STILL talking about william sheppard and that day in 1865
when he stops and finally realizes where he is, he actually blinks a bit before asking if you had joined any lunchtime clubs
and you were like oh yeah!! i'm in guitar club
he looked at you with the biggest heart eyes at that tbh
HE WAS IN LOVE
wdym your interests were perfectly aligned???? was he in a soulmates au
fast forward three months, and he seriously thinks he's found The One
confesses to you after playing guitar!! and he wrote a handwritten letter too with a cheeky reference to that one liquid soap conversation that started it all
you never feel like you're being "too weird" when you're with him and you two can always be your candid goofy selves with each other :))
심재윤 — sim jaeyun
muji pens, fond eye rolls, sharing books, lunch dates, lattes, TI-84s
you already saw this one coming
physics lover jake, but you've deemed physics your number one opp
HOW can this man go "i love this subject so much omg" after you've just gotten your third 72% in a row?!
it's not like you weren't smart (the class average was a 55)
and it's not like you hated the subject itself
okay maybe you did
but you just thought there were so many other alternatives other than physics to fawn over as a favorite subject. like. ANY other subject
one day, you're seated next to jake in calc and he just turns to you and starts talking out of NOWHERE
he’s like wow isn’t this so interesting? calc is like a hobby of mine!!
and you’re like boy stfu??? i’m literally struggling how is this your pastime
poor guy just wanted to make small talk and impress you with stuff he thought you were interested in… which is academics
fast forward to that afternoon in history though, and tests are passed back
you're a certified humanities girl, so you got an 100!!! academic weapon
jake, however..... is kind of an academic shield in this case
on the midterm, he had written that the victorian era ended in 1592, and filled in everything else he didn't know with "mansa musa" because it was the only thing he retained from ap world
maybe you genuinely felt really bad for hating on him when he had struggles of his own, or maybe you felt really nice that day, or maybe you were secretly hoping to get to know him more....
either way, you don't know what came over you when you tapped on his shoulder
you missed how his eyes widened a bit when he turned around, and how he looked genuinely shocked that you were talking to him in an initiated conversation! maybe his rizz was working! (maybe it was)
"there's a method that i use to memorize terms that i could teach you, if you want"
IF HE WANTS??? he would've literally jumped with joy if the paper in front of him wasn't such a nuclear bomb to his gradebook
so that's how you suddenly started spending all your lunches sitting with jake at an empty table together
he tutors you back for physics and math too, so it's fair
and DAMN it works
suddenly you two are all-rounder academic weapons???? he has your back for STEM, you have his back for humanities
like that's literally a power couple right there.
only one problem.
you aren't a couple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you confess to him after one of your study sessions, by plotting a heart on the desmos graphing calculator using the equations that he taught you
it was super cute!!
he was literally the proudest and happiest man alive he teared up a bit (he would never admit it though)
and NOW you guys are the campus power couple
“babe look at this!” and he's waving at you with his 100 on the history final
he actually started jumping and hugging you (embarrassingly) when you found out you got a 94% average in physics at the end of the semester, giving you an A in the class
you were so shocked when you opened your report card that you didn't even register it until you heard jake go "YOOO OH MY GOD BABE THAT'S INSANE I KNEW YOU COULD DO IT YESSS I'M SO PROUD OF YOU"
well maybe thanks to jake the subject isn't so bad now!
박성훈 — park sunghoon
big school, comfortable silence, convenience stores, headphones, lingering gazes
the "everything kinda sucks here, except you" type of plot
sunghoon tries to stay out of the spotlight, keeping to himself with his head down, hood up, and headphones on
you're not really sure when you met him first actually, but you're both the same type of people where you're just going through the motions
you intrigued him though-- maybe it was the slightly melancholic look in your eyes? or maybe it was the way you purse your lips when you find a particularly hard question on the worksheets in class
either way, he finds himself wanting to get to know you more
funnily enough, he sees you at the convenience store after school as he walks home, and his feet start walking him in your direction
you see him first, and give him a smile and a little wave-- and sunghoon waves back without even thinking about it
that was the entire interaction that day, but sunghoon keeps replaying that part when you smiled and waved at him
why can't he stop thinking about it?
some things definitely changed too-- you start saying hi to him in the hallways at school, you turn to sunghoon to ask questions in class, and you seem to brighten up whenever you see him
you guys start to have conversations, starting with simple small talk, then moving to longer, more random dialogue where you both just say whatever comes to mind
the two of you become so close that you decide to walk to and from school together, since you found out that you only live a couple blocks away
sunghoon likes to place his headphones over your ears to show you new songs every morning, and you like to share earbuds in the afternoon to walk home together
he also starts to slip little notes about his day in your backpack before you go your separate ways in the neighborhood, signing off with a little p.s. to meet him at the park before sunset
it takes him SO long to muster up the courage to confess to you because he keeps thinking you'd say no
but when he finally does, all his fears melt away because you looked at him in such a soft way
he's actually reminded of why he fell for you in the first place
because with you, there’s no judgment from the outside world in the little bubble that you’ve created with him
it's just the two of you against the world <3

drew and actress!reader feel the distance
masterlist | actress!reader masterlist
i casted tom blyth as y/n’s costar in this for no reason other than the fact that i love him lol
When y/n’s agent called her to tell her she got the role she had been stressing over for the past few weeks, she was over the moon and had immediately got to packing. Ever since she had started acting, she had always wanted to do a romantic comedy, and when the opportunity showed up on her radar, she knew she had to take it. Prior to the project, her “romantic” escapades on the stage and screen were fairly limited, and now that she was at a secure spot in her own romantic life, she felt like it was an idea she could finally explore.
It had been a while since she had been on set, taking a break for her and Drew’s wedding as well as to support Drew after the premiere of Queer, and she desperately yearned to be back. Don’t get her wrong, she adored spending time with Drew and her friends and family, but the need to be on set or on stage was entwined so deeply in her bones she felt like she needed it to live.
Now nearly a month into shooting her project, her glamorous and idealistic vision of being back on set had started to dwindle. Of course she loved when the cameras were on, when she could feel herself relax into her element, but as the days progressed reality began to sit in. She missed Charleston. She missed her home… she missed Drew. And as much as she hated to admit it, it was making her job harder.
“You good, y/n?” y/n’s costar, Tom, said, shaking her out of the daze she hadn’t realized she had sunken into. They were resting between takes, the two of them getting their hair and makeup touched up.
“Yeah, sorry.” Y/n said, straightening her posture and flashing Tom a grin. Tom was sweet, a true gentleman, and someone that she came to consider a friend over the course of filming.
“Are you sure? You’ve seemed a bit… off lately, no offense.” Tom looked at y/n, his face full of concern. She looked back at him for a second and, before she could stop herself, her eyes began to fill with tears.
“Shit, could we have a second, please?” Tom asked the hair and makeup team, who nodded before leaving the two of them alone.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what my problem is I—” Y/n began to ramble, dabbing at her eyes with a nearby tissue, praying she hadn’t already ruined the makeup that had just been fixed.
“It’s fine, don’t worry about it.” Tom said softly, handing y/n another tissue. She took it graciously, sniffling quietly.
“I just— god, this is so embarrassing!” Y/n chuckled nervously, glaring around at the numerous people who littered the set. Numerous people, all of which had people and places they missed too, but none of which were pathetically crying like herself.
“I can start crying too, if that would help.” Tom grinned, causing y/n to laugh lightly.
“No, I just… I really miss Drew, a lot more than I was expecting, I guess.” Y/n exhaled slowly, smoothing her hands along her pants.
“When was the last time you talked to him?” Tom asked, resting his chin in hand.
“This morning.” Y/n couldn’t help but laugh at how pathetic she sounded, acting as if she hadn’t talked to him in years when in reality it had only been a matter of hours.
“Have you asked him to come to set?” Tom asked.
“No, I… I don’t want to be a burden. He’s just so busy right now.” Y/n said with a sigh.
“I promise you, he won’t think that.” Tom said, looking past y/n for a moment before standing from his chair and offering her his hand. She took it, allowing him to help her out of her chair as they made their way back towards the stage where they were shooting.
“I know, but…” Y/n trailed off as a girl came over, straightening out her shirt and dabbing a bit of powder under her eyes.
“He won’t.” Tom said firmly, patting her on her shoulder lightly before moving to get into position for their next scene. Y/n smiled softly, her racing mind starting to ease as the cameras began to focus on the two of them.
After finishing their morning shoot, taking a break in her trailer, and returning for a night shoot, y/n was drained. As she trudged back to her temporary apartment, y/n sorted through her keys until she found the right one. With a yawn, y/n unlocked the door and flicked on the lights before tossing her keys on the table in the entryway. What she wasn’t expecting, however, was the navy suitcase near the couch… or the person sitting next to it.
“Surprise.” Drew said, a huge grin on his face.
“Oh my god!” Y/n squealed, rushing over to him before throwing herself on top of the boy. She kissed him slowly, relishing in the intoxicating feeling she had gone so long without.
“What are you doing here?” Y/n asked exasperatedly once they finally pulled apart. They had discussed him coming to visit halfway through filming, but that was still a few weeks away.
“Tom called me.” Drew said, tucking a piece of y/n’s hair behind her ear as he gazed at her softly.
“No he didn’t, oh my god—” Y/n buried her face into Drew’s shirt, hoping to hide her embarrassment. Had he told him about how she was pathetically groveling all week? Crying on set?
“Hey, hey.” Drew lifted y/n gently, sitting her in his lap so she could face him. He ran his thumb softly along her warm cheek.
“I missed you too, y/n. I–” Drew laughed, “I was already planning to visit you next week when Tom called me.”
“Drew I’m sorry I—” Y/n began, but was cut off when Drew ran his thumb along her bottom lip.
“I just wish you would’ve told me.” Drew said gently, placing a kiss to her forehead.
“I didn’t want to be a burden, Drew.” Y/n whispered. Drew sighed, dropping his hand to grab onto her own.
“Darling, I would gladly drop everything if you needed me. You never have to worry about that.” Drew said, soothing her hand. She looked up at him, the soft smile on his face and the sincere tone of his voice, and knew that he was being genuine. All of that worrying about how he would react melted away, replaced with the comfort Drew’s presence gave.
“Thank you, Drew. I’m sorry for not talking to you.” Y/n said, wrapping her arms around Drew. He hugged her tighter, tucking his face into her neck. His warm breath and stubble tickled, causing her to giggle in his grasp.
“What’s so funny?” Drew said teasingly, rubbing his chin against her jawline, causing her to laugh harder and fall onto her back. Drew propped himself onto his forearms, grinning down at her. She reached up, pushing his messy hair back.
“I love you, Drew.” Y/n smiled, looking up at Drew’s wide smile and crinkled, blue eyes. He leaned down, kissing her softly, the soft taste of mint lingering on his tongue.
“I love you.” He whispered, running his hands along her side as he pressed a line of kisses along her jaw. Here, wrapped in Drew’s arms, she was home.

i keep thinking of a second chance romance with lando, f.e. being young and having made stupid decisions when his career was just taking off, and then after a few years kind of wishing to get it all back🤔
i am: sobbing. i love second chance romances. also i got carried away… again…
lando brainrot? lando brainrot.
max fewtrell was the definition of a social butterfly. and if lando didn’t know that already, he sure did now. looking around at the crowd, he was almost sure his friend was more popular than him. he didn’t even know max knew this many people.
the music inside the house was loud, lando swore he could feel the bass in his heart. max had left him a while ago, the rest of the quadrant team off to god knows where. he stood in the kitchen, grabbing a drink and escaping from the crowd in the other room. he scanned the area as he tried his best to find someone to strike up a conversation with so he didn’t look like a total loser while his best friend made his rounds to different people.
that’s when he caught the first glimpse of you, making him do a double take as he looked back to where he thought he saw you. and sure enough, it was. you were here. in london. in the flesh. after all this time, you had come back.
his feet were moving before his brain could process what he was doing, mumbling soft ‘excuse me’s as he tried his hardest to reach you. luckily, ethan had found you and managed to keep you in a spot where he could join in on the conversation.
“that’s great, ethan!” you smiled, “congratulations!”
“thanks,” he smiled before lando caught his eye, “mate, look who’s here!”
you turned around to look at who ethan was talking to behind you, only to be met with those familiar green eyes and brown curls. you felt your heart squeeze in your chest, and all of a sudden you were brought back to when you were nineteen and madly in love.
scratch that, the only time you ever considered yourself to be in love.
you and lando weren’t necessarily on bad terms, the both of you had just drifted away. you had been through every thing together, attached to the hip since you were children. and the breakup was hard, sure, but with you moving to the states and his career taking off, neither of you had much time to think about it. you didn’t let yourself think about it.
“hey,” he said, coming to stand with the two of you now, “you’re… here?”
you smiled softly at the brit in front of you, “i wasn’t going to miss max’s engagement party.”
ethan had disappeared from the two of you, finding his way back to niran and aarav. it was just the two of you.
“yeah,” lando smiled softly, “uhm, how’s the states?”
“fine,” you shrugged, “no place like home, though.”
“you’re just back for the party?”
you hummed, taking a sip of your drink, “actually, they asked if i wanted to be a project leader for something they’re working on in the office over here, so i’m back in london for right now.”
he raised his eyebrows, “oh, that’s awesome, congratulations.”
you smiled, “thanks,” you couldn’t help it, your eyes taking him in. he looked good. so good. of course you still kept tabs on him, still watched the races when you had the chance to do so. but something about seeing him again after all this time, in the flesh and not on your tv screen, your heart was yearning, “saw your podium last week, mega drive.”
he shrugged, “it was alright, i guess.”
“don’t tell me you still do that.”
he laughed softly, “do what?”
“your thing!” you chuckled, “you do that thing where, no matter how good of a drive you have, you’re like ‘eh, could be better’.”
“well, it could be,” he said, “could’ve been me on the first place spot.”
“you’ll get there one day.”
he smiled softly at you before looking around the crowd. he spotted the door to that lead to the back deck that looked vacant, “did you want to step outside? get some air.”
you nodded and he offered you his hand. you took it gently, letting him lead you through the crowd of people before you reached the back door. he opened it, letting you step outside first. the cool summer breeze was a relief, the escaping from the loud music and an overwhelming amount of people.
“forgot why i loved this place so much,” you said, looking up at the night sky as he closed the door behind him, “you can see the stars here. can’t see much in new york.”
he hummed, stepping behind you, “might as well take in as much as the night sky you can get.”
“believe me, i am,” you chuckled softly, turning around to face him. the moonlight dimly lit his face as he stood in front of you, and you could finally see the start of a little bit of facial hair on his chin. you smiled teasingly, pointing at it, “i see you can finally grow facial hair,”
he rolled his eyes, “yeah and if i remember correctly, you said you were into guys with no facial hair.”
you twisted your lips in though, “still true.”
“damn,” he mumbled, bringing his hand up to his face, “guess i’ll have to go get a new razor tomorrow.”
you laughed, the two of you taking a seat on the steps of the porch. you looked back up at the sky, trying hard to ignore the way your heart was hammering in your chest. trying so hard that your brain couldn’t filter the next words out of your mouth.
“what ever happened with us?”
he looked over at you now, taking in your side profile before you looked over at him, “what do you mean?”
“do you ever think about us?” you asked, “like where we would be right now if we hadn’t gone and fucked it all.”
he licked his lips, “yeah, all the time.”
“me too.”
“this would probably be our engagement party,” he joked and you smiled, “can’t believe max beat us to it.”
“tell me about it,” you sighed, “i just had to give blake twenty bucks.”
he laughed softly, “no, but, seriously. i’m happy you’re here. i missed you.”
you swallowed, looking back into his eyes, “you missed me?”
“who wouldn’t?” he said, “even when we ended things and you moved and then i moved, i couldn’t help but feel like my life was missing something. like i was missing a piece to the puzzle, and… it was you.”
you were silent for a moment, processing everything that he had said before he cut your thinking process off, “i’m sorry, i didn’t-“
“lan,” you said, placing your hand on his, his rambling pausing as he mouth closed, “i feel the same. i was miserable in new york. i kept feeling like i had left something behind, like i abandoned it. and really, i had abandoned you.”
“you didn’t abandon me.”
“no, but it felt like it,” you said, “our whole lives it’s always been us against the world. and the last couple years it’s felt like its been the whole world against me. letting us go was one of the worst mistakes i ever made.”
“me too,” he said, reaching up and brushing away a strand of hair that had fallen into your face, “i’m still madly in love with you. i don’t think i ever stopped being in love with you.”
“me either.” your voice was softer now, realizing how close he was and taking in all the things you loved about him. his dimples, the way the freckles and moles decorated his face. he was still yours. he always had been.
he leaned forward, nose brushing against yours. you smiled softly, letting him cup your face into his hand. something he always did that would turn you to putty in his hands. even now.
“can i take you out for breakfast tomorrow?”
you nodded, biting down on your lower lip to suppress the grin on your face, which was ultimately failing, “i’d love that.”
he finally pressed his lips to yours, you melting into him. he pulled you as close as he could get you, deepening the kiss as he tilted his head to the side.
“hey, lando! shit, sorry-“
you two broke apart at the sound of max’s voice, who had already turned around and walked away from the two of you. lando laughed softly, letting your head dip down onto his chest.
“well, now we don’t have to worry about telling him.”

Some more DA:TV and related snippets from Sylvia Feketekuty, Part 2. rest of post under a cut due to length and spoilers. [Post One, Post Three]
The dev team really wanted to deliver on Emmrich's romance [source]
Sylvia Feketekuty has now left BioWare so there are likely some things she can't answer now "just because I can't look them up with certainty anymore" [source]
When Emmrich is first introduced, he has a skull helmet. Why does it never ever appear for the next 40-100 hours? "The helmet does indeed look wicked! I believe it actually shows up on his shelf in the Lighthouse eventually. (If I had been a smarter writer I would've asked if we could have it appear again, that one's on me.)" [source]
User: "In another post you mentioned shops in Nevarra City near the Necropolis. How far IS Nevarra City itself is from the Necropolis? Do only senior MWs get to go?" / Sylvia: "I'm reluctant to say what the distance is since I never defined it in game so it's Unknown™. But I imagine they can either walk or take a carriage, depending. Also I never imagined junior MWers are forbidden from going into town or such. It could be they have set hours and times where they're allowed. But got to get all those chores done first..." [source, two]
On the DA:I goat scene ([link]) - "The GOAT! God bless them, that was a delight." [source]
Brian J. Audette, on [this thread] - ""Better late than never" addendum to this thread. I just noticed that Isle of the Gods' writer Sylvia is on here now and I'd be remiss not to tag her in this thread. I can't say enough wonderful things about having worked with Sylvia on this mission." [source] / Sylvia: "Thanks Brian! You tackled an absolutely jam-packed mission with aplomb." [source]
Jo Berry: "Thank you for everything and everything else, on both Veilguard and Inquisition. Sunlight on your road, wherever it goes." [source] / Sylvia: "Thank YOU for all your writing Jo. Seriously, you were a godsend on Veilguard and DAI both." [source]
Trick Weekes: "It's been fantastic working with you, Sylvia, and I know you're going to crush it with whatever you do next. Thank you for finally letting me make you "the person who has to do journals so Trick doesn't" on one of our projects." [source] / Sylvia: "Thank you Trick! I'll miss working with you. It was an honour to finally be given the awesome responsibility of the journal system that still haunts my dreams." [source]
John Epler: "sylvia did you see i told the world Emmrich sleeps standing up like a horse" [source] / Sylvia: "It's days later but: yes. Yes I did." [source]
User: "As someone who also has a truly debilitating fear of death, Emmrich is so special to me. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen it represented in such a clear and concise way." / Sylvia: "Thanks, definitely felt that fear myself. I really wanted to express it clearly and was hoping would resonate with others." [source]
User: "Do you have any thoughts or opinions on what nickname Emmrich might have gotten from Varric if he'd ever gotten one?" / Sylvia: "Oh man that's a good question, but ultimately since I didn't write Varric, that must remain a mystery. Nicknames can only be bestowed. ("Bones" like someone suggested below is funny though.)" [source]
User: "If Emmrich's hobby is alchemy/plants, Vorgoth's is art, and Audric's is architecture... what's Myrna's? (Next to Emmrich, she's my favorite Watcher - sorry Vorgoth!)" / Sylvia: "Myrna has a one off line, you may not have heard it yet, where she talks to Vorgoth about getting tickets to the Sword of Drakon.* She enjoys a night out at the theater, whether it's a play or an opera. *(I think that's the play I named, I hope I'm recalling my own line haha.) It's a bit indulgent of me, but I chose Sword of Drakon because it was one of the plays I made up for a series of codices in DAI about Orlesian theater. I had a lot of fun with these and wanted to give them life once more. [link]" [source, two]
User: "During Rook’s disappearance in the prison, how did Emmrich react? Considering their intense romance, did he fall into depression, or did he show a more vulnerable side? Could his fear of death have influenced the situation? In the immortal romance💀, Emmrich promises that nothing will separate them, not in this world or any other. How likely is that? Would he go to great lengths for Rook, even crossing boundaries? Or, at some point, would he accept Rook's death?" / Sylvia: "1) Very strongly! I think it's a bit more interesting if I leave details to your imaginations, but Emmrich feels things deeply and probably had some sleepless nights. 2) So this I can't say much on even though it's a juicy topic. The truth is, I wouldn't even know unless I was actually sitting down to write it. Again, Emmrich feels things very passionately, but this is the kind of scenario where I might want the player's choices to have an effect." [source, two]
User: "Any chance that color scheme [of Emmrich's coat] was based off the corpse flower?" / Sylvia: "I couldn't find anything on the colour scheme and the corpse flower. Afraid this one's a mystery to me." [source]
User: "I'm really curious if there's a Nevarrese language? We have Orlesian, Antivan, Tevene, Qunlat..." / Sylvia: "I wondered that myself, especially given its ancient ties with Tevinter and also Orlais which would certainly have affected the languages of power and influence. Could also have roots with the Planasene. We never talked about one though, as far as I know, so the answer remains...unknown. 💀 (I did introduce tomb-script, the language you see etched into stone in the Necropolis, but I thought of it as more of a specialist's language for occult and magical things specifically.) (If we did define a Nevarran language in some corner of the lore, now I'm going to feel embarrassed, but I don't BELIEVE we did.)" [source, two, three]
User: "I wanted to ask if you have anything you can share about MW grave dowry jewellery - is it the sort of thing they keep on at all times? Also, would Emmrich like jewellery gifts or give them to Rook?" / Sylvia: "I figured it would be something they wear most of the time, or at least in public. You don't want to be without your grave-gold if you pass away! Emmrich would love to get jewellery, especially if it marked a special occasion like his other pieces do! He'd also probably like to gift Rook a piece of grave gold himself, though he knows a non-MW Rook might look at that part askance." [source, two]
User: "Question: how much if anything can you tell us about the circumstances surrounding the emergence of Emmrich's magic and him going to the Mourn Watch? In my mind, his parents' death could certainly be a catalyst for the emergence of mage powers, but I'm so curious why the butcher's boy goes to what seems the equivalent of Nevarran Harvard instead of a regular Circle unless he immediately demonstrated outstanding ability?" / Sylvia: So timeline wise, I think his magic manifested after he was taken in. This part isn't canon, so much as a background thought I had that maybe the spirits of the Necropolis nudged the MW to scoop up this future corpse-whisperer. It seems like a kind of place ripe for that sort of omen. That said, it could've also been a kindhearted Watcher who saw how shattered and alone this young boy was, and thought an upbringing in the Grand Necropolis would be the better place to deal with his grief. It's the kind of thing I want to leave open unless someone goes back one day to fill it out!" [source, two]
User: "what’s the overall Mourn Watch opinion on the whole Weekend at King Markus’s the other Mortalitasi are pulling? I can’t blame Emmrich for not wanting to be involved with that political mess!" / Sylvia: "No clue what you're talking about. King Markus is in the finest of health!!!!! ahahahahaha (To my mind Emmrich's response indicates a tension between the orders, but that they're going along with the polite fiction to avoid a mess. I can't say what the future holds though.)" [source]
User: "Ah, one last note: whoever decided “DA liches are immortal protectors and not always evil?” Chef’s kiss. It’s all I’ve ever wanted!" / Sylvia: "Thanks again! It was in Emmrich's first draft. The other writers and editors gave me good feeback on lichdom and the philosophy behind it especially" [source]
User: "I'm an ICU nurse, and that is imagined to confer a comfort with mortality. Suffice to say Emmrich has been a huge comfort to see." / Sylvia: "Thanks so much. I really wanted him to struggle with it while also engaging with it, because it's something I find hard as well. And I hoped it would find purchase with players." [source]
User: "If you’re willing, can you share a bit about the other orders within the Mortalitasi? Is there a rivalry with the Tevinter Imperium?" / Sylvia: I'm afraid I don't have much, sorry. I left the other Mortalitasi orders a big open canvas in case we wanted to invent more some day. (We've mentioned the palace Mortalitasi are separate from the Mourn Watch, so there's one. As you probably caught, Emmrich's not a fan of theirs.) Is there a rivalry with the Tevinter Imperium? I can't really point to anything in the game talking about that, so I hesitate to call it canon. But to my mind it would be very natural and also very funny. So if that ever manifests, I approve." [source, two]
User: "was any of Emmrich's design or personality modeled on British actor David Niven? I think there is resemblance just wondering if that was intentional." / Sylvia: "Oh I love David Niven. But the more direct actor influence for me was Peter Cushing in a few old Hammer Horror films." [source]
User: "just wanted to say thank you for creating the character of Josephine in Inq!! Helped me learn some stuff about myself when I was younger and meant a lot." / Sylvia: "Thank you so much on all counts! I'm glad the lovely Lady Montilyet was there for you (and enormous credit to her actor, Allegra Clark. She absolutely nailed Josephine, straight away.)" [source]
User, on Emmrich: "He mentions he thought he would marry - is that permitted for Mortalitasi when it wasn't for regular Circle mages? Can they now raise their own children?" / Sylvia: Mortalitasi have a lot of power. I imagine the Nevarran Chantry might grant them permission to marry outside the Circle more regularly than in places where mages are given less respect. (Mages can also marry within Circles, so no permission needed in those cases.) The same might be true for mages raising mage-born children in Nevarra, but I say that with less certainty. I think that's a topic I would've wanted to discuss with the rest of the narrative team." [source, two]
User: "is there a particular reason why emmrich is always wearing a glove on one hand?" / Sylvia: "I like to think it's mostly because he works a lot with his hands. The glove seems useful if he has to, say, grip a rough outcrop of rock when traversing the Necropolis, or deal with a bitey corpse." [source]
User, on Emmrich: "On my 1st run I played a trans Rook and romanced him. It felt incredible how he was so accepting of Rook's identity, and in return she could support him as he did a transition of his own as well. Beautiful mirroring!" / Sylvia: "Thanks very much! If those scenes worked, it's thanks to some people at work who kindly gave feedback that helped get the tone right." [source]
User: "I've been wanting to thank you for writing Luck in the Gardens for 4 years. Hollix was the first time I ever saw a non-binary character given a real voice." / Sylvia: "I loved writing Hollix in that story, they were a treat, and I'm glad they meant a lot to you. (And a shout out to a nb friend who gave me some good feedback on the character, I don't think the story would've been as clear without their help.)" [source]
User: "I was curious about Audric from TN, and if he originally was planned to have an appearance in veilguard, and what he's up to now" / Sylvia: "Love Audric, but I never planned to bring him into VG. I'm not AGAINST it, but I didn't want the short stories to feel like required reading for the game, and I liked where his arc ended in DatDM. That said, I dropped in a few references to Audric to let people know he's around and well. And I imagine he's doing what he loves: being a force of order, in the library. (And reading books during the more quiet hours below.)" [source, two]
User: "As a consumer of (and probably future creator of) so called "erotic" fanficfion, I'm wondering how you feel about the fact that fans make it about a character you created?" / Sylvia: "No issues with it whatsoever. We put sex and romance into the game itself, after all. I think people use fan art and fanfiction to extend their time with a story they've grown fond of, or to figure things out. So it feels like a natural extension of that." [source]
User: "Maybe one day my rook will join the mw!" / Sylvia: "Well, the Grand Necropolis is always eager for more company...🪦👻" [source]
User: "did the flame eternal (short story) come first or the flame eternal (quest)? i’ve been wondering if the quest was named after the story or vice versa" / Sylvia: "I wrote the scene first, the short story came after. But I named the quest AFTER the short story had come out, so I'd say the quest is named for the story because I liked the callback." [source]
User: "1.I know John answered already that Emmrich sleeps like a horse but is there really no bed for this man? 2.How would he react to a bouquet made for him?" / Sylvia: "1. Unknown. Perhaps he brings out pillows and a blanket for the slab in his room (after scrubbing it, of course!) Perhaps he goes home to an elaborate silk-covered bed in his Necropolis apartments. Or the horse thing. (TBH: I never decided myself, so I've leaned into impish mystery). 2. Emmrich would be absolutely delighted and flattered by being presented with a flower bouquet." [source, two]
User: "I hope it's okay to pop here but it might interest you to know a lot of us have been headcanoning that he has a secret bedroom behind one of his bookshelves! It seemed to line up with his sensibilities somewhat." / Sylvia: "That would honestly be great. Pull out the right book and snooze time." [source]
User, on the cemetery date: "This makes me feel like Mourn Watchers include the dead in important personal milestones/events and, if so, I love that so much. Like they want to share these events and the joy/love/excitement/etc. with those who have passed (and perhaps linger.)" / Sylvia: "That's absolutely how I thought of it too." [source]
User: "was there any game/book/show/film that inspired the Mourn Watch and Emmrich? When I saw them in the preview content, I got reminded of the Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir and playing through the game cemented those vibes." / Sylvia: "I hadn't read any Locked Tomb when writing Emmrich, I think we must both just have impeccable taste. (I actually tried to stay away from contemporary stuff on necromancy when writing him, out of a superstitious fear I'd be unduly influenced. I do want to talk about influences later though!)" [source]
User, on Josie: "Do you think she’s open to having kids/adopting with the Inquisitor? Lord Ontranto and Yvette are so ahead!" / Sylvia: "I think that falls firmly within the category of what you imagine she and your Inquisitor's romance looks like, which means: absolutely, if that's where you imagine life would take them." [source]
User: "Emmrich, his story & everything surrounding him absolutely played a huge part in helping to lift me up & connecting me with new friends online" / Sylvia: "Thank you! And I'm very glad to hear Emmrich and his fellow Watchers helped you out when you needed it. He'd be pleased to know so himself." [source]
User: "Was it ever considered for him to appear in the game?" / Sylvia: "(short answer is no, but I wanted to let people know Audric's doing well.)" [source]
User: "I enjoyed your short stories in Tevinter Nights. Emmrich mentioned working out in the morning. What does his morning routine look like, and what kind of exercise does he do?" / Sylvia: "Thanks so much! Those stories have a special place in my heart, so that's especially nice to hear. On exercise: He likes a brisk stroll, and does morning stretches, and for something more strenuous, he likes to go swimming. Why? It's a workout where you don't have to worry about sweating. That just seemed to align with his fastidiousness in a funny way to me. (I also imagine exploring the Necropolis keeps him active, climbing all those stairs and crumbling ledges and the outsized walls of hallowed tombs, etc.)" [source, two]
User: "Harding will turn to a MW Rook who's been talking nerdy necro shop with Emmrich, and goes (paraphrasing), "You're so different when you're talking about this stuff than you are when you hang out with us!" and I loved that" / Sylvia: "Yes indeed! And thanks. I really wanted a beat where you realize MW Rook has learned to swap between being a fancy nerd and talking a bit more like "regular" people in Thedas. It seemed like a fun trait for that background." [source]
Sylvia, on how she came to BioWare: "No formal training. The closest to practice I had was running tabletop RPGs for friends, which actually helped me a lot with understanding the different kind of RPG players out there and what people want out of a story. And honestly: I just kept applying, over and over. That was my main virtue. I was rejected the first couple times I applied to BW. And rightly, I think, I wasn't ready and practicing in between really helped me become a stronger writer." [source, two]
Some more on this topic ^ from Sylvia: "To be honest: mostly luck, some perseverance, and then writing skills, in that order. I was rejected at least twice from BW before I got in, and I think they were right to do so. I wasn't ready yet. The third round someone I knew passed on my sample to a writer there, I did two more rounds of samples while taking feedback and revising over the next month. And then I was lucky enough they liked it enough to interview me. I wish I had better advice than perseverance. I think having a small, completed game, even something text based or a mod, isn't bad either. Even if it's short, it shows you finished it. But: my entry was over 15 years ago now, and to be honest I'm not sure what BW's applicant process are anymore. I don't want to be discouraging though. I would say keep applying, and make friends with like minded people who also want to make games, and best of luck." [source, two, three, four]
User: "I've been wondering something about Mourn Watch Rook's background - their bio says they were found as a baby + raised by the MW, and they reference it in-game, but then they also say they were a street kid and left their old life behind to join the MW to Taash. I'm just curious how one - being raised by the MW - lead to the other - street kid era. I just hc'd it as a euphemism for my Rook's party girl phase lol but it did leave me a little confused." / Sylvia: "This is a case of the background changing slightly over time, and me not squaring it in time with dialogue. In my mind: MW IS found by the Mourn Watch, raised by them, and work for them. But MW Rook also had period(s?) growing up where they explored Nevarra city, to explain why they're more. street savvy and worldly than your typical Watchers who never leave the city. I've seen people noting some discrepancies, and in a perfect world I would've caught those lines in time to smooth them out to encompass the whole story. But perhaps your Rook gives slightly different answers to different people for their own, mysterious reasons! (Or, in reality, it's writer error.)" [source, two, three] "Anyhow, I encourage any head canons that help square these discrepancies" [source]
User: "I romanced him on a Rook that I perceived as about 42ish and my running interpretation of the lines acknowledging her being young were either Emmrich not realizing how old she is, a running bit between them, or some cute form of flattery to not remind her of her own age haha" / Sylvia: "That's adorable, I love it" [source]
User: "1. What would Josie's ideal date be? 2. Could adopted kids be heir of the Montilyet estate or would it go to Yvette? 3. What does Josie think of the Crows?" / Sylvia: "1. I think she'd try to structure something, but the Inquisitor taking her away from her strictly scheduled routine to relax would actually be better for her. A picnic in a garden, a stroll around a lake followed by a meal in a quiet little restaurant. Something with a soft evening. 2. I don't think I ever said so in the game, but to my mind Josephine had some nieces and nephews in line to be heir. If she adopted a child and thought they'd be a better candidate, they could absolutely inherit the estate. (And of course, she could bequeath money or personal effects as she liked.) 3. She thinks of them as a necessity in Antiva, and that it's important to appease them. There's probably highly placed Crows she would get along with. But she'd never be comfortable with them. At the end of the day they're contract killers, and she's no lover of violence. (If I actually DID mention who Josephine had lined up to inherit the estate after her, but just forgot, I will ask for mercy because the game came out over 10 years ago.)" [source, two, three, four]
User: "Would you ever consider making a playlist on spotify of the sort of music you could picture Emmerich listening to? Or perhaps sharing any of the music you listened to while writing Emmrich?" / Sylvia: "I actually have an itunes playlist of what I listened to when writing Emmrich on my old computer. If I dig it out, I'll post a screenshot! (A lot of ambient stuff, probably unsurprisingly)" [source]
User: "I utterly, completely adore the way Josephine was written, she's such a wonderful and complex character. Her history as a bard, her ruthlessness, her kindness and sweet nature and how CUTE her romance is." / Sylvia: "Lady Montilyet herself would be flattered to hear you liked it." [source]
User, on Sylvia's comment about Peter Cushing being a go-to for what Emmrich would be like: "This makes me so unbelievably happy given my love for Peter Cushing 😭 my love for Emmrich was inevitable." / Sylvia: "I want to talk a little more about it later but Cushing was such a wonderful actor. Wish we'd had him around even longer." [source]
User, on death and working in death care: "In the end, it’s always about memory." / Sylvia: "That's so true. We want to be remembered, or to have something that lets people know even a little about who we are. (It's why I'm glad newspapers still print obituaries, you can read about the most amazing lives.)" [source]
User: "I was starting to think the game was reading my mind and tailoring to me once he said his favorite color was lilac, and I was given the option to say darker purple." / Sylvia: "I'm glad you enjoyed Emmrich and his romance. And that the bit about colours worked for you, I was trying to think of what would be something fun there, and purple is one of my favorites too. (Fine taste!)" [source]
User: "“Down Among the Dead Men” is one of my favorite chapters from Tevinter Nights. I loved Audric and I was so happy when Myrna mentioned him in Veilguard! Was there any chance he might’ve appeared in game?" / Sylvia: "basically I didn't plan it, but I wanted to let TN readers know Audric is living well" [source]
User: "If Hezenkoss was also you ALL of that was a sheer stroke of brilliance!" / Sylvia: "Thank you! Hezenkoss was me, so glad you liked her. She was a blast to write. Oh my god, I meant to write Hezenkoss was one of my favorites not "me". (I think I snipped out something and consequentially sound like a maniac in that post above. SORRY. She is not me, I wish I had that kind of confidence.)" [source, two]
User, on behalf of their friend: "Well, spontaneously I'd be interested if she can say any more about Emmrich's past romances. Was there someone really serious among them, or all just fun and casual? I'm also curious how the whole mage training works in Nevarra. Are some trained from the start by the Mourn Watch or does everyone go to the Mortalitasi equivalent of a Circle first?" / Sylvia: "1. I think there was probably a mix of more serious romances and more casual ones over Emmrich's life. The serious ones just never panned out. (Until Rook, if you're romancing him.) 2. I pictured the MW taking in promising members from other circles, but I left their selection criteria vague on purpose, in case we needed to define it later. Of course, there's also exceptions. We've seen they take in some orphans or foundlings (MW Rook and Emmrich, for example) when fate, chance, or pity allows it. (I had an idea spirits might sometimes nudge MWers to take in someone, but that's not in the game, so it remains, I suppose now, my own head canon.)" [source, two, three, four]
User: "Emmrich is every bit the warm and kind academic that I looked up to in my undergrad/postgrad days, and I have taken time in the game just to wander the Grand Necropolis and take everything in." / Sylvia: "My pleasure, and thanks very much for saying so. (Props to all my teammates, it took a lot of people to bring those characters and places to life, and they were all so enthusiastic about our weird gothy corner of Thedas.)" [source]
User, on Emmrich's dream: "One of few cases where writers don't go for "actually immortality is lame" lesson to appease the audience for whom immortality is unattainable. Refreshing to have a character who wants to live forever, can do it, and it isn't treated as a mistake. One of the boldest bits of writing in the game." / Sylvia: "Thanks Mary - that was one of my aims, because so many times in stories, immortality is a fool's errand. I wanted it to have its rules, and its price, but not something disastrous or out of reach." [source]
User: "The MW as a whole was beautifully done and the way they handle life and death was deeply healing and aided tremendously in my own personal journey with grief." / Sylvia: "I'm very glad meeting Emmrich and the Watchers helped even a little, that means a lot to hear." [source]
User: "Amazing work in veilguard and inquisition honestly and the flame eternal was such a fun read! Unless it’s been answered before my query is where do the Mourn watchers live/sleep? Is it a case of they live in the higher parts of the Necropolis or do they live in the city and commute?" / Sylvia: "Flame Eternal was a fun one, hadn't written a story that short before but I enjoyed introducing Johanna and Emmrich's dynamic back in their good old days... As to your question, there's one line of banter between Emmrich and Neve that talks about this (so, very easy to miss.) The Mourn Watchers live and sleep in the upper (safer) levels of the Necropolis." [source, two]
User: "does mortal!Emmrich return to the Necropolis or spend more time in the world first? He plays detective with Neve & camps in Ferelden with Harding feels like he’d want to experience more of the world before returning home." / Sylvia: "Impossible for me to say what the future will hold with certainty, but I think Emmrich's enjoying exploring the world too much to go back to living in the Necropolis full time just yet. He'd certainly want to keep visiting regularly, but there's so much more to see." [source]
Sylvia: "The Watchers have a special place in my heart." [source]
User: "I just wanted to say how much I love Emmrich" / Sylvia: "Thank you very much! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed getting to know him." [source]

author's note: i hope you like this, i lowkey fried my brain trying to make sure i was confident enough to post this...still trying to convince myself. also the title isn't as cute cuz my gradient thingie wasn't working so it'll be plain...sorry bout that. as always, reblogs and comments are always appreciated as well <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you were in second grade when you met your best friend, nikolaas, after he moved to your school. you were assigned to be his class buddy to help him get comfortable at the new school. the two of you attended the same school all the up to university so you weren't ever really apart from one another. the two of you learned to swim and ride bikes together as little kids. he was there when you went on your first date with the cute guy in your calculus class at the ice rink near your home, and he was there to take you to the hospital when you broke your ankle right after. you were there to help him learn to slow dance before he went to his first formal dance with a girl that wasn't you. he was there to teach you how to walk in that pair of So Kate's you bought without realizing maybe there was a reason nobody but zendaya dared to wear those godforsaken heels. you were there to coach him through confessing his feelings to his first boyfriend. the two of you had experienced so much of your lives beside one another that your relationship wasn't shaken when it was time to move away from home. years passed and he was a professional model travelling the world while you were working as an architect, living in monaco.
since living in monaco you'd been promoted, moved to a nicer apartment, completed a huge project with your team, and met your boyfriend. you met max at an event you'd been invited to courtesy of your own personal connections. from the moment he laid eyes on you, he knew you there was something different about you from other women he's met in the past. that night, you both exchanged numbers and he'd convinced you to go on a date with him shortly after.
༘˚⋆𐙚。⋆𖦹.✧˚
for the first time since you'd moved to monaco, your best friend had finally been able to take time to come visit you. he'd flown in two days ago and was staying at your apartment for a bit longer before flying out to korea for some event he was invited to. you sat on your bed and he sat across from you painting a fresh coat of nail polish over his nails since the ocean water chipped it off earlier today. his hand shook slightly as he painted his fingers and your voice cut through the silence, "nikko i swear to god if you get black nail polish on my bed i'll kill you." he looked up through his long, thick, black eyelashes and muttered, "je bent letterlijk de meest dramatische persoon die ik ooit heb ontmoet." you rolled your eyes and huffed, "whatever you love me and you know it." he cracked a smile through the focused glare he held while looking at his fingers, "yeah yeah...speaking of love, how's your man?" [you're literally the most dramatic person i've ever met]
you smiled at the thought of max and answered, "he's really good. the season has treated him well for the most part and he's happy with how things are. we're going back home for his next race so i'm excited i'll be able to see both of our families, and i'm gonna try to stop by your place to see your mom if she's there." he shook his head while keeping his eyes on his nails, "m'ma is in suriname until september because she's visiting granm'ma and granp'pa." your frowned and asked, "were you supposed to go home with her?" nikko nodded and shrugged, "it's alright though, i think i'll be able to make it down there for christmas so it's fine. plus you can see her in september when she comes back." a smile tugged on his lips and he continued, "that is if you want to come see me walk at new york, paris, milan, or london fashion week this year." you nearly tackled him into a hug and screeched, "NO FUCKING WAY- NIKKO?! YOU BOOKED ALL FOUR?!" he laughed and wrapped his arm around you in a hug, "yup i'm booked and busy this year!"
you immediately promised, "i'm going to be at every single show." your best friend nodded, "already reserved your tickets for everything." there was a beat of silence before he asked, "wait isn't max still racing in september- i don't want to make you miss those especially because you missed miami for the met gala with me." this was true, you'd flown to new york city to be nikko's plus one for the met gala but max told you he didn't mind and was happy you were going. without a second thought, only thinking of how exciting this was for your best friend, you waved off his worry, "it'll be fine. besides max likes you."
༘˚⋆𐙚。⋆𖦹.✧˚
"i don't fucking like this guy." max huffed as he scrolled though his instagram because you posted something. he looked at his screen and clenched his jaw seeing the post you'd made with your best friend.

reading the comments didn't ease max's mind whatsoever but he did catch a few that did make him realize that maybe you were just being a supportive best friend. he'd had friends go to things to support him in the past and he's done the same for them so why does he feel so...weird when you do the same? he'd managed brush off the feelings he had until he checked your story and clicked on the post you'd shared:

max fought to control his facial expressions when you called him excited to tell him about going to support nikko at the big 4 fashion weeks. he watched as your eyes sparkled, "he's already reserved the seat in my name at all of his shows too! this is so great he's always wanted to walk in these shows and now he's got the chance. i want september to already be here." max frowned at the mention of the month, "schat- i'm still racing in september though?" you explained, "well yeah it's just singapore and azerbaijan that i'll have to miss but i'll be at the rest." max bit the inside of his cheek, "didn't you already see him walk in new york back in may? you missed miami for it remember?" you smiled, "babe that was the met gala, that was different. this is actual fashion shows not a red carpet."
when max was still silent you asked, "why don't you seem happy doe nikko?" he took a small exhale to not raise his voice or seem too annoyed, "it's good for the guy i mean this is a big deal as a model. i just...sometimes i think he's just a little too close?" you frowned and you asked, "what do you mean? you've never had a problem with him before?" max sighed and admitted, "i'm just saying there's no reason why other people should be questioning our relationship status when you're with other people. why is he holding you like i hold you?" you couldn't even find the right words for a moment, "i- i- he....max you've seen the way he acts around everyone. he's a touchy guy and he always has been. why are you now bothered that he holds me? it's nothing new."
max let out another annoyed huff and snapped, "just tell him to watch himself." you couldn't even say anything before he hung up the phone on you and left you stunned to a silence. just then your phone pinged and it was another instagram notification:
nikko just posted a story!
Tumblr media
there wasn't even a point in trying to ask nikolaas to delete the story because he was on a flight to korea right now which means he just posted it before the plane took off. so all you had to do was hope maybe max wouldn't see it because although you had no issue with the photo, you knew right now your boyfriend would.
༘˚⋆𐙚。⋆𖦹.✧˚
the instagram story made it's way to his eyes in less than 5 minutes after it was posted. so, max didn't hesitate to open his own photo gallery and select a few pictures before posting them himself, he pasted a caption from the ones you'd saved in his notes and posted it before turning off his phone.

hot tears stung the corners of your eyes as you stared at your phone knowing full well why max posted the photos he did. you knew that he got jealous every now and again but he'd never done anything like this, especially when it came to nikolaas because he knew how close he was to you. max wasn't answering your phone calls or text messages so you had no way to actually call him.
meanwhile max was in his apartment on his sim when he heard a knock at his door. when he opened it he saw lando standing on his doorstep before he pushed his way into his apartment. max asked, "why are you in my apartment?" lando shook his head and countered, "why are you posting shit like this online?" a smug grin tugged at max's lips and he answered, "you know why."
lando sat on max's couch and responded, "i don't know why. what i do know is your girlfriend called me crying asking me why you weren't answering her calls." max huffed, "she's busy playing with that guy." lando ran a hand through his curls, "you're jealous of her best fucking friend? are you being serious right now?" max rolled his eyes and lando continued, "the guy wears nail polish and face glitter and you think something is going on between them?" when there was silence lando continued, "mate he literally flirted with charles and asked for his number when he came to zandvoort last year. then told alex that she had good taste because he wanted to quote 'drink him up and sop up the rest with a biscuit. and you think there's any way that something is happening with y/n? you can be jealous but if your girlfriend says there's no reason to worry then you should trust her. you need to fix this before something actually happens that can't be fixed." lando slapped max on the shoulder before walking out the door and heading back to his apartment.
༘˚⋆𐙚。⋆𖦹.✧˚
it was nearly 3 am when max unlocked the front door to your apartment and slipped in quietly, kicking off his shoes and leaving them by your front door. he pulled back the door and grabbed one of his t shirts and took off his pants before climbing in your bed. he pulled you closer to him and wrapped his arm around your torso. when you moved his arm off of you he knew you were awake so he mumbled, "schat..." you answered plainly, "wat wil je, max?" your boyfriend pressed a kiss to your shoulder and responded, "i'm sorry. i was wrong and i was immature and posting those pictures knowing you had them in our private folder was wrong." there was a momentary silence before you asked, "waarom heb je het dan gedaan?" he let out a deep sigh as he admitted, "i was jealous and only thinking about myself in the moment instead of thinking about how my actions would affect you as well. i never want to hurt you or be the reason for your pain, but i was so i'm sorry." [what do you want, max? // then, why did you do it?]
you felt his hand run over your arm gently as you asked, "wat ga je doen om het te repareren?" max answered, "well i deleted the post first and came here to apologize second. also i'd love to see you go to london, paris, new york, and milan to support nikko in september. i'll be waiting at home for you the minute you get back." you turned to face him and opened your eyes, finding his gaze in the darkness. bringing your hand to his cheek you asked, "i never want you to think that anyone stands a chance at competing with you for my heart, maxie. you are my person and i only love you this way, i only want to be with you. there's only you in my heart and i need you to trust me when i say that, okay?" max leaned into your touch and nodded, before you pressed a gentle kiss to his lips, "i love you." he pulled you to his chest and tangled his legs with yours as he replied, "ik houd ook van jou." you nuzzled closer to him and brought a hand to his chest, tracing small patterns over his heart. both of you began to drift off to sleep, your voice cut through the silence, "but do that shit again and i'm kicking your ass, verstappen." max let out a small chuckle and admitted, "i don't doubt that, but you don't have to worry about it happening again." [what are you going to do to fix it?//i love you too.]

Let me help – Miguel O'Hara
Tumblr media
pairing: miguel ohara x fem!reader
warnings: tw homelife problems mention, some angst
words: ~3k
masterlist
an: they're good friends in this but feelings are hinted at from both of them. this is definitely not me projecting not at all. but sometimes you just need someone to offer comfort when you're feeling down, which is how i have been feeling for weeks. anyway, have some hurt comfort on this tuesday i guess. we're so back.
❥❥❥❥❥❥
“You’ve been avoiding me.”
Miguel’s voice reaches your ears just as you’re about to leave his lab.
There was a mission with Hobbie and Gwen that needed to be reported, and you stood silently in the back until Gwen was done and the three of you dismissed. Or at least the two of them were.
“No I haven’t.” You say, closing your eyes and chiding yourself for not leaving faster.
You have been avoiding him, leaving before he can speak to you, only spending time with him when a mission is involved and not answering his calls. It’s killing you –there’s nothing you want more than just to spend your time with him like you always do– but if you didn’t avoid him, you’d be in trouble. He would notice something’s wrong; he’d know you’ve been crying. He’d figure out something’s wrong the moment you tear up again, because you can’t stop feeling so sad. Miguel is your friend, and unbeknownst to him, the object of your affections, he knows you and he can’t know you’re not doing well. You can’t be another burden.
“Mentira.” You don’t have to turn around to know he’s shaking his head, but you do anyway. He gestures towards his platform and because you can’t deny him, you go. This is why you avoided him. “Did I do something?” Miguel asks you once you’re standing in front of where he’s sitting.
“What? No, of course not.” You shake your head. “I’m fine, just feeling a little off today. Sorry if I’m ruining the vibe for the team.”
“Come on, you know you light up the room anywhere you go.” He says casually, leaning back on his chair and crossing his arms. The orange glow of the screen highlights his facial features, from the top of his cheekbone to his lips. His eyes meet your masked ones and you look away.
“But I don’t anymore?” You ask, knowing the answer is yes. You half expect him to say it, ‘Your mood is bringing everyone down’.
“You do. But I know you, and there’s something off.” Miguel sighs and gestures towards your face. “You won’t take off your mask anymore for starters.”
“I have a pimple, many.” You lie, sitting on one of his desks opposite him, crisscrossing your legs.
“Uh huh.” The look Miguel gives you is enough for you to know he doesn’t believe you one bit. “You know you can tell me anything” He breathes out again. “I won’t insist on you doing so, if you don’t want to.”
You bite your bottom lip under your mask and shake your head. “I can’t tell you. It’s stupid.”
“Doubtful.” Miguel stands up and walks towards you. Once he’s close enough and looking down at you one of his hands reaches for your mask, asking for permission.
This is why you avoided him, you think again, you can never say no to him.
The most imperceptible nod from you, and a moment later your teary eyes are meeting his brown ones. When his face falls with concern you can’t do anything but wrap your arms around his middle and hug him. Miguel wastes no time returning the hug, arms secure around your shoulders as he holds you.
“What’s going on, mi pulguita, huh?” He says, voice quiet, gentler than it’s ever been. “It’s not stupid if it’s got you like this.”
“Things back home aren’t… good.” You whisper, finding comfort on his warmth and relaxing with his touch. When was the last time you got a hug like this? “God I shouldn’t be complaining, sorry.”
“You’re not complaining.” Miguel pushes you back so you’re looking at him, his eyebrows are furrowed. “Stop apologizing.”
You nod even as your lip trembles. It’s wrong in your mind to say how you feel –not about him, you’ll never tell him, but about your home life. Others have it worse, why can’t you just grow up and put up with your situation. It should be easy, getting through the day despite the chaos and heaviness that seems to plague you. If others have it worse, you have to be strong no matter how much you’re hurting right?
“Whatever you’re thinking about right now is probably wrong.” Miguel frowns as his hand moves up to cup your cheek. “If you want to talk about what’s going on back home, if you don’t like it, that’s okay. Stop thinking it makes you a bad person.”
You shake your head and look away. “Complaining won’t solve anything, Miguel. I just have to get over it.”
“It’s eating you alive; nothing good can come from bottling it up.” Miguel’s frustrated tone shines through but only momentarily.
“You’re one to talk.” You huff, leaning your forehead on his torso, avoiding his eyes.
“That was before.” His hands move to your shoulders and push you back gently. “I’m getting better at that because of you. Let me help.”
Your eyes tear up again and you bite your lip; this goes against every instinct you have. When you’re like this you retreat into yourself, talking about what’s making you so sad is the complete opposite. Yet you find comfort in the concerned gaze that meets yours when you look up again. “I hate living at home.” You confess softly.
“There’s yelling and fighting, and an environment that’s so toxic, every single day. It gives me so much anxiety I don’t know what to do with myself sometimes. Then there’s this feeling when we’re all together –right before an argument breaks out– that I’m letting everyone down, that I’m not the person they thought I would be, and it kills me because I can’t be that person.” You pause to gesture at your suit in a way of explaining what you mean. “And-
With another shake head you cut yourself off and wipe at your tears harshly, falling silent once more.
Miguel’s warm touch in on you again, wiping a rogue tear more gently than how you did before. His other hand shoots his red webs and brings his chair over, letting him sit I front of you until you’re in the same eye level.
“And?” He says, prompting you to keep going, mostly likely wanting to know everything so he can find a way to solve it.
It shouldn’t be his problem. You tell him that.
He rolls his eyes at you, not annoyed, but frustrated. “It’s not a problem. No entiendes que…” With a deep breath he looks at you again. “I care about you, and I hate seeing you cry so let’s see if we can at least make it better.”
You fiddle with your fingers until Miguel gives you one of his hands and you hold it tightly instead. “And I feel so lonely, Miguel.” You whisper as you squeeze his hand. “I feel lonely and then I feel selfish for even wanting anything to change in the first place. Other people are going through worse situations, so why do I cry because I feel so alone in that universe...
“Sometimes I feel like… like I’m such a problem that if–”
“No.” Miguel’s gaze hardens but not unkindly. This is protective Miguel and he’s trying to save you from your own train of thought. “I know what you’re going to say and it’s not true.”
“But what if it is?” You whisper, letting go of his hand to wipe away your tears again.
“Lyla, bring up file 7200” Miguel says in lieu of an answer. He nods towards the screens and stands up.
You follow him wordlessly, wondering what this is all about until you’re standing right next to him and see yourself on the various screens. They’re all different missions, some of them with Miguel fighting alongside you, some of them with your spider friends. There’s footage of you wiping the floor with the Scorpion until you capture him; you, trapping a Doc Oc for Miguel to cage inside his high-tech cells; you, being Gwen and Jess’ backup when their mission with a Sandman got out of control; and finally, you, comforting a little girl that got hurt in a fire back in your home world as you bring her over to an ambulance. The girl looks at you with teary eyes but a growing smile, then giggles at something you say until you put her down on a stretcher.
Next to you, Miguel lets out a breathy chuckle as he looks at the same footage as you –you and that little girl. “‘Want some smores?’ I can’t believe you said that.”
“I knew it would make her laugh.” You whisper, the corner of your mouth lifting.
“Do you see the positive impact you have?” Miguel asks, his voice is low as his hand gestures to the screen. “None of this would have happened without you. So you’re wrong.”
“Miguel…”
“Everyone would feel your absence, so don’t think the opposite is true.” Miguel closes his eyes and turns to you. “Who’s going to visit me at the oddest hours if not you?”
The fondness in his voice makes you look away. “Probably another variant of me.”
“They all hate me.” Miguel reminds you, then brings your gaze back to his with his thumb and index finger on your chin. And I love you, you think, fighting so hard not to show it as you look at him. “We can fix this.” He nods.
“How?” You ask him, heart beating louder, anxiously, at whatever he’s going to suggest.
“You, are going to move out of your house.” He says decidedly, walking to a smaller monitor. “It’s not doing you any good.”
“No.” You shake your head. That’s selfish, that’s–
“That’s putting yourself first for once.” Miguel says, making you realize you were thinking out loud. “You need to be yourself in your own world, and not just here. You can’t do that if you’re frozen with anxiety by living at home. What’s something you want to do?”
“Ballet.” You mumble, knowing deep down he’s right. “Ever since I got bitten, I haven’t been to the studio once.” It feels like a selfish act to do something for you instead of patrolling the city, no matter how joy it would bring you.
Miguel sighs and walks over to you, a glance over to the screen confirms he was searching for apartments in your home world. His hands find you face, and he shakes his head. “I know all I do is work and go on missions, but that’s me. That’s not you, and the world is not going to end if you have a hobby.”
“I like being here.” Your voice is a whisper as you look at him, calming down the thrumming of your heart so he doesn’t notice it. With you. “I like the society.”
“Then do ballet here, the Gwens would love that.” He insists.
“Miguel, I don’t think I can.” You shake your head as much as you can manage with his hold on your face. “It feels wrong, doing something just for me feels impossible. I always feel like I should be doing more.”
“Is that you talking? Or your family asking more and more from you?” His hands move down to his hips as he looks at you, a quizzical eyebrow raised.
When your eyes tear up again, they wordlessly answer his question.
“Look at all the things you’ve done.” Miguel motions to the screens behind him where the footage still plays on a loop. “You’ve never been one to back down from a fight, no matter how dangerous it is, and I don’t think you’re starting now.”
This is another battle entirely, internal with your negative thoughts and external with all the triggers and stressors in your home world. Fighting variants is never scary, not even the Goblin, but why does your stomach sink at the thought of freeing yourself from your torment, of opening up to something new and hope. Yet letting things stay how they are scares you more.
Eyes glassy, and breath shaky you look up at your friend –the man you’re secretly oh so in love with– and nod once in determination. He doesn’t smile, yet his eyes light up with relief and pride before pulling you close again. “There she is. You’re not alone, you’ve got us… me.”
“My mind hates me sometimes.” You murmur as your eyes close at the physical touch– at his words.
“Tell me when it happens.” Miguel says, voice low. “I’ll listen.”
Lyla pops up next to you. “Hm, words of affirmation seem to be your preferred love language, as well as physical touch.” She looks at some data on her phone before she addresses Miguel. “I’ll add it to her file.”
“I can’t believe you actually have a file on me.” With a shake of your head, you reluctantly step away from his embrace to look up at him. A weight has lifted from your shoulders, so much you can genuinely grin at him this time.
His expression doesn’t change, though his brown eyes give away how pleased he is. “Are you surprised?”
“I’d be surprised if you didn’t.” This time you do smile, maintaining eye contact even as his thumb caresses your chin gently one last time.
“Come on, we’re finding you an apartment and you’re getting out of that house.” He turns away from you and walks towards the screens, closing your file and opening multiple real state webpages.
“Can I stay in a spare room until we find it?” You ask, sitting on his abandoned chair.
Miguel’s already focused on his task, but he pauses long enough to reply. “You don’t have to ask, pulguita.”

Warnings: mention of depression

It was difficult to keep on going on your whim, time and time again looking for reasons to belittle or make it difficult for y/n to work on this project. She absolutely regretted come to this godawful grassland for the world’s pettiest man’s song. Not that he hadn’t moved on, y/n would see him: hand around shoulder, slipping down the waist as he’d laugh with one of those model stand ins. Every meal. The common dining area of the hotel they stayed at, Alex was the charming machine to all these lady guests of his. She couldn’t keep on distracting herself talking to the rest of crew, small talk was fine and longer conversations were embarrassing. She felt ambushed talking about her acting hiatus because the general narrative was that she got way too into her own head, she probably did but what business was that to the intern Sam who was a disguised coffee guy. She kept on telling herself and everyone else that the ‘whole thing’ wasn’t a ‘big deal’ but god forbid someone mentions an award function, her tone would immediately get guarded as if she was being tested. As if she was on that stage again being a laughingstock. Too much. She didn’t talk at all, hence decided to order room service for almost all her meals.
“You’ve got to be kidding me!” Y/n exclaimed slumping her shoulders down. There was a rain forecast on their original location so they changed production to a planned cliff, second day of the same shoot and the municipality shut down entry to the place because of supposed lightning forecast. It was taking forever to finish this godforsaken music video.
“They said they’re closing it for a week.” Richard informed her with a sigh, bummed out himself. Too much time on production as it is, getting to a peculiar location as such. From the centre to outskirts through the hilly roads it was already such a hustle only to find the place shut down. “The studio said we might as well extend a while for the location since we came all this way.”
The whole crew was growing increasingly restless on this project, no more than y/n and no less than Alex who was apparently enjoying the sights. A smirk on his face, clicking a picture of the no entry sign for the joke of it, snickering as he did so. It just fuelled her annoyance. “Cant we just shoot here? We drove four hours to come here!” Y/n proposed pointing to the open grass landscape, the whole place was just gigantic dunes of grass and grey skies. The first two days of shoot, it was beautiful. With more and more delays it was the most daft place ever.
“We have done the landscape part we need a cliff shot now…” Richard trailed off with a sigh, “Look, guys, let’s stay positive yeah? We can maybe find a new location”
“We can’t, they close the roads by sundown remember? It’s already 2, I don’t think we can make it.” Alex added into the conversation, his tone was laced with amusement so bad it made y/n infuriated but she didn’t say a word given he was a master of creating a scene. Absolute zero fellowship in him, he was enjoying everyone else’s suffering coming all this way just to spite her.
“Don’t we have a pass for it? With the shooting permit?” Y/n inquired about it, such remote locations generally allow access to a shooting team on permit.
“Guess who forgot it at the hotel?” Giving a disappointed look to Sam, the coffee guy/intern.
Deadpanning her face y/n rubbed her eyes, taking in a deep breath. Disappointment clouded her problem solving abilities “Don’t we have any cliff other equivalent location in this stupid place?” She said with a scoff. Every place looked identical anyways.
“What a great idea!” Alex exclaimed ironically joining his hands together, his classic taunting was about to follow “How about we find her a park bench, will that be cliff equivalent for you?”
It had already been a lot of days of this mockery and a miserable time here. At hotel, the locations, failed shoots, his constant jabs were resulting in a lot of piled agitation. “Shut the fuck up.” She said blatantly.
Richard widened his eyes as did the crew, they were busy in finding network to make the maps work and Google nearest new locations but this was rather difficult to not be moved by, Alex too, “excuse me?” he was taken aback to say at least. Raising a brow he leant forward as to express his offended demeanour.
“The whole crew is really tired, we all woke at 4 am. Packing, equipment, dress, make up-to drive all the way here only to not shoot. If you can’t contribute stop irritating people who are actually working.” She told him off crossing her arms, shifting her weight on one leg.
“Is that so? What are you doing except for whining?” Alex said with a bitter laugh.
“This is stupid” she shook her head, instantly deciding to not engage anymore given she was here for work not engage in petty conversation with him besides in front of the whole crew it was anyways unprofessional. “You’re unreasonable” she waved her hand in mid air, crossing her arms as she was turning away.
“You haven’t changed a bit. Go on go leave, you’ve never had it in yourself to stay when things get difficult.” Alex scoffed, absolutely unfiltered in front of the whole crew perhaps purposely harsh.
“Alex, I’m being professional here you don’t have to go that far.” She replied with a frown on her face, surface level comprehension of his words which she knew would hurt so much, they already were but she wanted to be removed from this conversation before he made matters worse.
“Oh you’re being professional now?” To him, anything to do with her wasn’t professional. For exaggeration, if she even breathed in his direction he was agitated. Just a huge grudge to not see beyond professionalism. “Such a professional in everything you messed up your most serious two year long relationship.”
“I know it wasn’t mutual and I regret you were hurt but this isn’t the place to have that conversation now-“ she tried to reason with him in a subtle way, instead of biting back like him she could’ve approached with bitterness of how it’s been half a year since they parted, how he was seemingly moving on yet constantly berating her for leaving.
“You don’t get to decide where and when we have this conversation? You’ve already decided enough for me.” He said mockingly, his gaze fixated on her as he stared her down. He wasn’t aware for the root of his hurt and anger, originally he knew it was because she left him yes. But other than that, the fact that she felt like just waltzing back into his life through small talk or the fact that she didn’t waltz back into his life. It was the later. She decided to break up without of a second thought because she deemed it right for him, thinking she was a burden. She decided to leave for him and all he wanted was her. Back then and even now he didn’t know what he was trying to prove to her but it was surely drifting her father from him and he didn’t know how to stop that so he just let his anger out, “Tell me, is it better now? You learned to cook did you? You take your own meds on time…if you actually do? You attend all possible award shows you’re nominated in?” He scoffed, reminding her all such things he was helping her through and she refused him. He couldn’t stomach that she wanted to heal without him and it was a rather low blow when he mentioned the award show thing, she didn’t attend award shows at all even now. He kept tabs even after the break up because It brought him a sort of reassurance that she wasn’t completely alright, not without him. He loved her so infatuatedly he didn’t know how to act.
Y/n was sick to her stomach as he went on and on, in front of everyone just spewing out her personal miseries. “You don’t get to play the martyr just because I didn’t want your help.” To think that man that once hand fed her all which he cooked, with so much love, the man who set alarms to remind her for her medicines and the award show thing. He knew it was and still is a sensitive subject for her, he put her in the exact same situation like back up at that stage again. Right now amongst the camera crew, it was just a handful of people and y/n felt increasingly uncomfortable yet he didn’t stop talking.
“I’m not playing the martyr but I didn’t asked to get left either.” He said emphasising on the word ‘didn’t’ right back at her. He wouldn’t say it but this whole lashing out was not because she didn’t want his help but because she didn’t want him and that still word.
“It’s been…” she paused, “six months.” It was really hard to see him say all that so easily and she could barely formulate words trying to fight back tears simultaneously. Just how could he show indifference so such extent.
“I’m aware.” He scoffed changing his stance looking away for one second, contemplating if he should go on because he did take a not of her quivering voice she always did that when she was about to cry, he could recall from their time together and that reminder just fuelled him even more. He knew her like the back of his hand back then, even now, yet she walked way. “You were scared I’d leave you if I got to know you were depressed but when I chose to stay you were even more scared and left me. It is so difficult to love let alone work with you!”
“Work, yes of course” she nodded slowly registering the hurt of his words bit by bit because he was going further from far. “I’m going to go revise…” she told Richard, rest of the crew as well. All who’d been witnessing this conflict awkwardly and painfully silently. Y/n couldn’t look at anyone’s faces as she walked back to the trailer, it was a bus in itself because the whole crew travelled together but if the universe had any ounce of mercy left for her nobody would join her this very moment. Her ears were numb to the silent background, she thought Alex would have the last word surely but he didn’t. She walked the longest walk back to the trailer, closing the door behind her. There was a heavy feeling in her chest, the mechanical setting of sadness. Her heart racing, mind replaying the whole ordeal. Every word, everyone’s surprised faces. She wanted to break down, tears already brimmed her eyes but then again if they were to resume shooting on a new location the very same day her eyes would be so puffy and displaying that to the makeup crew. After everything they witnessed, absolutely not. She paced back and forth air drying her tears, trying to divert her mind. She did. She thought about the dreadful night of their breakup again, she must’ve put Alex in this very situation back then. His pleading, begging voice. The man who was on his knees for her who wanted her to do anything but leave, just how right now she wanted him to do anything but keep talking. But well, both things happened and the later was the consequence of the first one. She had nobody but herself to blame and the inherent guilt crept right back in.
-
Thankfully, there was no resumed shooting later that day given the rain check was really bad to commute to another location as well so the crew all returned back to the hotel. Four hours, just staring out the window. Fixated completely y/n didn’t even look at anyone the entire ride and nobody approached her even. Straight into her room at the hotel, for dinner she ordered just room service. After an awaited long breakdown in her room she couldn’t go down and have dinner with the rest of them, the breakdown session was as it is evident on her face plus everything was so awkward after the whole ordeal. Everyone looked at her with agitating sympathy, as if her dog had passed.
She opened the door to “Room service!” knock, taking the food in, not exactly meeting the eyes somewhat hiding her face as if she was some alleyway dealer. “Thanks.”
“Miss y/l/n, I’m really sorry for what you’re going through.” The room service guy told her out of courtesy and also genuine compassion.
“What?” She was immediately confused, what exactly was he referring to?
“The whole…your ex-I was there.” He explained, not sure how exactly to term Alex lashing out on her in front of everyone. But he wanted her to know his sympathies lay with her “I was assigned by the hotel to the filming crew as a local here” he said referring to why exactly he was there in the first place.
“Oh.” Y/n nodded, wonderful. This whole interaction had the same feeling of a funeral when someone explains how they’re related to the person in subject however in this case y/n was full well alive. “Yeah…thanks. Thanks a lot.”
“For the record, I’ve seen almost all of your movies and I have loved you in every single one of them and your order is the most easiest order to make. So you’re not difficult to love or work with I’ll have you know.” He tried to be hospitable and also as a fan, he felt really bad for the actress in question. His heart was there, trying to offer kind words but it just made y/n feel ambushed.
“That’s-that’s really sweet.” She nodded with a small smile regardless. What a time! Even absolute strangers feel sympathetic to her and Alex who-no. “It means a lot…”
“Always. If you need anything, the restaurant is open till 11.” He said politely and pushed out the empty cart out of her room and bid her goodnight.
Just as she was about to close the door as the cart moved out, a foot stepped in the middle refraining her from closing it completely so she opened it instead to see who it was. “Hi.” Alex said as he tilted his head forward, he didn’t think she’d actually open the door to him.
Y/n just took a deep breath, visibly raising her guard she did not have anything to say him at this point and she couldn’t believe he had something more to say. She just stood there, trying to appear stiff but with just the first glance he could tell she had been crying. Crying really bad. He wanted to apologise, after a lot of thinking over the words shared he felt like he crossed a line. Especially with what he said, he said in front of everyone. He messed up. Apologies came cheap, he didn’t know what to say. “The shots from yesterday came in, it’s good. It’s great. Beautiful-you were beautiful.”
Tears were already formulating her eyes, just at the sight of him. The casualty of his tone after what he did, she wanted the slam the door in his face so that’s what she attempted too. Slowly closing the door but he stopped her again, “please, can we talk”
“Just go…” she sighed averting her gaze from him so he wouldn’t get the satisfaction of seeing her cry. He leant a bit lower to see her face, conforming the tears she was trying to hide. He wanted to reach out and hold her but he was just out here in the lobby. He experimented professing further and she did let him inside, dejectedly moving aside y/n just didn’t want to see his face anymore.
Getting inside Alex softly closed the door behind him, anxiously she was pacing back and forth. He once made fun of her, he called this method of hers “air-drying tears, love?” he asked. She did not want him here in the first place so he didn’t breach that boundary, stopping by the small of hallway to her hotel room a few steps by the door.
“Why are you even here?” She asked firmly as she had been successful to air dry her tears back. It wasn’t pride, maybe on the prideful spectrum but she would not cry in front of him even though it hurt like hell.
“I know I can’t make things right after what I said today, I shouldn’t have said that. Especially not in front of everyone like that-you, you were at work.” He said in a calm tone leaning against the wall, “I’m sorry…I’m really sorry.”
“Okay.” She nodded without even looking at him, barely acknowledging his words because she was fixated on not breaking down at this very second.
“That’s it?” He asked, not frustrated just underwhelmed that his genuine apology accounted for so much less? “Okay?” He couldn’t tell if she was okay with it in a true sense or if she was being passive aggressively ignorant about it.
“What do you want me to say?” Y/n asked scrunching her brows as she crossed her arms.
“We are not at the best terms, I know. We both messed up, you were trying to be civil. Today I crossed a big line, I know. I really want to just make things right-“
“Then why don’t you just leave?!” She stopped his self serving closure set apology mid way, “You are here in the first place just to spite me aren’t you? To give me a hard time and so far Alex, you have been very successful-“ she was so angry, she couldn’t hold her her tears anymore as they streamed down her face breaking her voice.
“Hey, hey” he cooed softly as he approached her in small steps. Ever since he saw her face, evidence of a long breakdown on it he had wanted to just pull her into his embrace. Now she was crying again and he couldn’t fight the urge as he gently placed his hands on her shoulder to soothe her.
The familiarity of his touch, his consolation punched y/n back to the good years just him and her and they rarely had these moments where she would be falling apart but she knew that if she did, he’d be there. Just like how he was here. But this time it wasn’t healthy, this wasn’t right even if it felt so. She pulled herself away from him shaking her head as she sat on the bed of her hotel room crying into her hands.
Hesitantly he followed her, this was all so instinctive. “Y/n…” he trailed off as he knelt in front of her as she sat on the edge of the bed. She had covered her face with her hands so he tried to gently remove them as to see her face. “It’s alright, you’re alright.” He soothed as he finally got to see her weeping face. He kept on wiping her tears as new flew down her face. “You are so much stronger than this, you’ve been okay before. You’ll be okay again, just breathe.” This is what he was perfect at, piecing her back together. She held the colour only his paint brush knew.
This scenario was almost like an extremely long déjà vu, this exact scenario y/n had been here so many times. Him comforting her, so willingly and so warm. As if it was worth being this hurt, she couldn’t get words out through her crying, that perfectly but she didn’t have to for he already knew. To be loved is to be known and he knew her like she was the last thing he’d ever know, the last he’d learn. “Can I hold you?” He asked softly, eyes expectant for a yes.
Nodding she hesitantly met his eyes and she recognised Alex for Alex. After so long, she didn’t think about anything else but the familiarity of the lover she once held. The one who was holding her now. He stood up and sat beside holding her, enlacing his arms around her. A warm embrace shielding her from an awful time he inflicted on her.
She returned his embrace as well, his hand rubbing her back in a repetitive motion her weeping dying down but he didn’t let go. He didn’t want to.
Alex nestled her closer to him, words unsaid and a vague understanding. Neither of them broke the cocoon of warmth. It almost felt like a fever dream to y/n, she wasn’t aware of any reality she’d let herself be in this situation in. But here she was. Slowly drifting off to sleep in his arms. He could tell she was, he settled the two of them in a lay-down position on the bed. He didn’t think she could fall asleep and he also didn’t want to move. With her small grip at his shirt with the two of them cuddling he figured she wouldn’t want him to leave either.
He planned to leave silently once she was sound asleep, as time went on he didn’t realise when he drifted off to sleep too. Just holding her in his arms, cuddling the two of them slept on their grievances entangled with one another.
HIII!!! I’ve got like two more chapters left to this pls let me know what you think or I will d!3 and don’t forget to drink water xx

At Each Other's Throats
---------------------------------------------------
You can find my other stories here!
---------------------------------------------------
"The fuck you looking at, runt?"
"Nothing... Just looking... I didn't think they made people as ugly as you..."
"Huh?!? You wanna fucking fight?"
"I thought you'd never ask… Bring it, pussy!"
 "Guys. THE PROJECT!"
There was never a moment that we weren't at each other's throats. Emma was a bite-sized girl with an attitude. Surprisingly enough, she got along with just about anyone. Me being the exception. And I've been around her since kindergarten. I wasn't so sure what made her hate me so much nor did I ever ask. But I wasn't going to take her attitude lying down. After all, we've always been sort of competitive. I just assumed this was just the norm for us, so I didn't really pay it much mind. However, our fights became more frequent and physical by the time we entered college. The only time there was ever peace was after we've fought. I'm not proud about hitting a girl. But she was as far from a girl that I had ever known. And sometimes I'd wonder. Emma knew how to throw a punch and take one as well. And despite our height difference, it never stopped her from picking a fight with me. We did our best to stay away from each other. Unfortunately, that bliss had soon disappeared with our professor grouping us up for a project. Even with our peers disagreeing with the arrangement, he was quite adamant about his decision. Lecturing us about the cruel world. Emphasizing that we will bump into people that we don't want to work with, but that's just how it is. This very decision of his lead to multiple fistfights and arguments. After some scolding from our team, we went about the project without a hitch. All the team really had to do was tape our mouths and keep us apart.
"Good job team! Thank FUCKING god it's over! A big thank you to our two brawlers who carried this project… Who woulda thought they’d have the brains and brawn? Hahaha... Jokes aside… A cheers to all of you, and let's have a good time, alright?"
"There you are... You heard the man... Good job on stuttering the entire presentation, pipsqueak..."
"Huh?! You lonely or something? I don't remember calling you over... And for your information, I would have read it better if it weren't for your chicken scratch..."
"Chicken scratch?!? Please... Maybe you should get your eyes checked, grandma…."
"Haha very funny. Ever heard of a laptop? Type it out, old man..."
"Wowwwww… Original insult… Tell me… Was it really my hand writing? Or maybeeee the big words were a little too hard for you… Don’t worry, I’ll dumb it down for you next time…”
"You wanna fucking go?"
"And here I thought you were getting soft on me… C’mon shorty, throw the first punch…”
“Hey hey hey! What’s everyone cheering for? Oh my fucking god... Seriously? YOU TWO? Again? Really? When I said to have a good time, I didn’t mean to start beating the fuck out of each other… You know what? Sit… ”
“But…”
“He started it…”
“I don’t give a fuck who started it… You guys are going to settle this NOW… You... Bring me the cooler… Rules… First one to black out loses... Loser owes the winner servitude for a week… End of story…”
“Is this really necessary?”
“Yeah! Give Oliver a break... He can’t hold his drink, you know…"
“Nevermind… Give me that damn can…”
What started off as entertainment for the entire party quickly became a health concern as the floor littered with beer cans. Yet even then, the insults and provocations were clear as a day. Every spectator urging us to keep pace with one another. The crowd joined in. Showing no signs of stopping. The once cheering crowd slowly dropped one after another. Blacking out in the process. Leaving us three standing.
"Oof... Man down..."
"HAHAHAHHA... Light weights!"
"Jeez... Even drunk you guys are still fucking stubborn... Ugh... As much as I want to see how this turns out... Some of these guys have a curfew... Listen... You two can hang out here for all I care... But be sure to clean all this trash up, alright? I don't wanna deal with the extra fees for trashing this place..."
"What? Why us?"
"Heeyyyyyyy Oliverrrrr shtopppp talkinggg! You're shlowing downnnn! Drinkkkkk!"
"Did you get hit in the head too many times, Oliver? You're drunk... I'm not trusting you two idiots to drop our friends home... Now go sober up and fucking clean this place... We'll get you guys in the morning... Alright... C'mon... Wake up... I'm dropping you guys home... Crawl if you have to... Yeah yeah... Sleep in the car..."
"Jeez... Bossy much...? Huh, Jason?"
"Who'd be able handle you two if I wasn't little bit bossy...?"
"Livvvvv.... Drinkkkk..."
"Alright alright... Stop smothering me..."
Jason had a point. Despite playing it cool, I honestly doubt I could have made it to the car. After leaving us be, Emma was still raring to go. Pushing another cold one up to my cheek. Looking back, this might be the first time we ever really sat down and enjoyed each other's company. She had this dumb smile, and honestly, I had no choice but to roll with it. Who would've thought that all it took for us to get along was a few drinks? I gladly accepted. With beer in our system, visions gradually blur. Words exited and slurred without form. Yet we were happy. The eager pace slowed down to a casual sip and laughter. Taking our time, exchanging stories. Although nice things never last. Our drinking came to a sudden halt. Not a single beer or bottle in sight.
"Did you see those two? By the kitchen?"
"Dude... Yessss... The tension between those two... Jeez... Just fuck already..."
"Right?!? Unbelievable... Mmm... Liv... Beer me... My cans empty..."
"Wait hold on... Lemme... Uhhhhh... Shit... Not to ruin the mood, Em... But that was the last one..."
"What?!? No fucking way... How're we supposed to do the bet? Livvvvvv...."
"Stop shaking me... Will you relax? It's just a dumb bet... Does it really matter at this point? No one's here..."
"Huh... Fuck you... We've been drinking for the past three hours... Yes, it matters... It mattered when you went on to chug those two beers in front of those girls... which I remind you that I had to keep up with... Show off... And not to mention, it mattered every single day we fought... So yes, it matters... Because we have a fucking score to settle..."
"What are you talking about? Weren't we just having fun-"
"Oh shut up... I saw you making those googly eyes at those girls... Do you really think chugging beers is going to impress them?"
"Well fuck you! Like you know anything about impressing anyone... Before I found you... You were just standing in the corner like some lost... puppy..."
"Excuse me? If anyone's acting like a dog, it's you... Uhuh... Unlike you, I don't have to chase after every piece of ass I see... But you know what? Since you know everything... Why don't you prove it? Yeah, that's right... Let's change the bet... Why don't we make out... The first one to moan... loses..."
"Fuck no... You're drunk... I am not going to kiss you..."
"Oh please... It's just a kiss... It's not that big a deal... Don't tell me you're scared to lose..."
"Haha... Very funny... I'm gonna go clean up... H-hey what're you- Get off me..."
"Listen... If you wanna give up, that's fine by me... But YOU owe me for a week... Hahahaha... Maybe I'll put a collar on your neck and strut you around those girls you like so much..."
"Huh?! You're making a lot of excuses, Em... You sure you don't just wanna kiss me or something?"
"Ew... Don't get me wrong... This isn't some sad attempt to kiss you... I... fucking... hate... you... The only reason I'm doing this is because I want to win... Now, are you in, or are you out?"
"Fine... But if you lose... You're going to be the one wearing the collar..."
"Deal..."
"You're soooo gonna regret this..."
"Hahhaha... Oh yeah, tough guy... Make me-"
Getting dragged into her pace was my mistake. She had a way of pissing me off. I knew better, but here I was. Tasting the bitter aftertaste of alcohol on her tongue. As hot as it may seem, it was still Emma. I've never ever seen her in that light. Never planned to. Yet suddenly, I'm tongue-deep in her mouth. As much as I hated doing this. I hated losing to her even more. And before you get all riled up. This wasn't some cliche romance story where enemies share a kiss. No. Our hate-filled eyes were constantly fixated on one another, waiting for a moment of weakness. Watching every little reaction. Please. There was not a gentle thing about her. I hate to admit it but the only soft thing here was her tongue. The buzz making it much more difficult to keep my head straight. Slowly, it felt like she was winning. Her short stature now towering over me. My face cupped along her fingertips allowing for a better angle as she indulged in my lips. My hands now trembling around her waist as she devours me. Moan after moan nearly slipping from underneath me. In my bliss, my tongue had reached out to her only to be met with nothing. Having pulled back to look at the mess she's made. A snarky little grin crept onto her face, leaving me embarrassed.
"That's a good look on you... No no keep your tongue out... Dogs should act like dogs, no? Hahaha... Whose the puppy now?"
"Huh? Big talk coming from someone who's blushing... You going to keep stalling, or you going to kiss me?"
"In your dreams... You're going to have to do better than that if you want to- Mmm! H-hey... I'm t-talkin-... You dum-b... mutt... Mmph!"
Impatient? Yes. Needy? Perhaps. But a mutt? Are you fucking kidding me? I'll fucking show you mutt. Taking advantage of our size difference, I quickly pushed her back against the couch's armrest. Pinning her wrists over her as she helplessly flails underneath me. I was pleased to see her struggle in anger. Besides her cussing, it was almost kind of cute. I was met with the same old protests and insults that I've heard a million times before, which got me thinking. She wouldn't be talking so much with my lips pressed against hers. That being said, I placed one soft kiss after another. Little pecks that seem to agitate her even more. Leading her to snap and bite at my advances. Jokingly, I lick along her lips like the dog she claimed I was. Another string of swears fills the room, only to be interrupted yet again. Playfully enveloping her. Sucking roughly on her tongue. Harsh movements reduced to obedience. Hands clutched around the back of my shirt as she melts from her prior tantrum. Without much thought, my hands had made their to her chest. Gently kneading her perky breasts through her shirt and bra. Subtle pleads, leaving me frozen. Tears running down her face as she calls my name.
"L-livvv... T-that hurts..."
"S-shit... Sorry sorry... W-woah uhm... Y-you okay? Oh fuck... C'mon Em... D-don't cry... I... I didn't mean to... I was just- Ow! Fuck! What the hell, man? Why'd you throw me off? I coulda snapped my neck or something..."
"Good! That's for groping me, asshole! Hahaha... Wow... I was right... You do look better underneath me..."
"What the fuck are you talking about? Weren't you just... crying?"
"Please... Is it really my fault you let your guard down? A girl bats her pretty little eyes at you and you flip the script to play hero... C'mon... That's not us, Liv... And don't act so surprised... You started it... After your little stunt, I think I deserve a turn, no? Fight fire with fire? So you're going to lay there and take it... And if you even think about moving... I'll tell everyone you touched me..."
"Y-you are so... fucking... mental... You know that?"
"Says the person who thought it was alright to pin down a girl and grope them..."
"You bitch..."
Can you see what I'm working with? It's no wonder why we fight so much. She's unreasonable. Rude. Psychotic. And taking my pants off. Wait. What? Taking my pants off? There she was, standing over me with my lower half now exposed. I watched closely as she fidgeted with the clasp of her jeans. Revealing her little black boyshorts briefs. Listen. You might be thinking that this bet is going a bit too far, but would you honestly risk being made a fool around campus? Exactly. And from what's happened so far, I'm guessing she was willing to do whatever it takes to beat me. Even if it meant blackmailing me. And honestly, I don't blame her. There being so much on the line, we didn't exactly know what our intentions were once one of lost. The possibilities were scary. She was in full control of the situation with dirt to back it up. If I acted now, I would have lost more than just a dumb bet. It's ironic, really. I told myself I wouldn't take her attitude lying down. But here I am. With my back against the floor. Groaning in pain as she straddles my hard-on. To make matters worse, the thin fabric of her shorts made it feel almost nonexistent. The thought of her slick, wet cunt grinding against me was unbearable. Losing it would be an understatement. This. This was TORTURE.
"Hahahaa... Mmm... Not looking so h-hot, Oliver... Gonna cum? Hm?"
"F-fuck... y-you... Ngh..."
"Hhahaha... You... w-wish..."
With my mind drawing blanks, I was at a loss. Keeping what composure I had left deemed difficult. Her hands pressed firmly against my chest, riding away at my sanity. Though I was nearing my limit, one sensation rang out above the rest: an irritable, smug laugh brought upon by the belief that she had already won. Nothing pissed me off more than arrogance. Having her literally look down on me was a new low. How could she be so unbothered? Grinding on someone she's hated her whole life. Then it clicked. If she was willing to do anything to win, then it was only right to meet her halfway and do the same. Who cares if she ratted me out? She was just as guilty. Just as wrong. Anything to put this little brat in her place. Unaware. My thumb trailed downward beneath her shirt, inching lower and lower until her frantic hips came to a stop. Surprised. That smug smile was gone, leaving her speechless and struggling to find the words to convey her absolute disapproval.
"Hahahah... What's wrong, Em? Is something the matter?"
"Fucker... What do you think you're doing... t-touching me there? A-asshole... S-stop it..."
"Wowwwww... Where are your fucking manners...? You know what? I don't think I will... Let's get things straight... First off, you started it... Not so fun now, huh?"
"What the fuck are you talking about? You started i-"
"Please... Your twisting the story... All I did was kiss you... You had to amp it up and grind against me..."
"I h-hate you... D-die..."
"Hahhaha... Suffer..."
For as long as I've known Emma, she was never the type to back down from a challenge. Be it for better or for worse, she always proved to be annoyingly persistent. Even now, in her current situation, she still had the audacity to move her hips against mine. There, a constant tug of war was at hand. Each party hoping for the other's downfall. In retaliation, I placed small circles around sensitive flesh. Flick. Brush. And grind. Toying with her clit as I pleased. Her enthusiasm dulled by the alternating rhythm. Rocking hips that seem to stutter at every motion causing her to press her wet, needy cunt along the tip of my cock. The sensation overstimulating me in the process. Forcing me to my limit. Even then, we were too stubborn to give up, pushing ourselves even further than we agreed. Fuck. We were far past, just a moan. Every action, eager to make the other cum. Our common sense failing us as we both reached our climax. A jolt of intense pleasure. Followed by a sense of defeat emanating from our breathless moans. The post-nut clarity doing its job as guilt floods my system. I lay there, looking up at Emma, who was barely keeping herself together. Before we had any chance of exchanging words, we were quickly interrupted by the sound of the front door unlocking.
"Em... Oliver... Have you guys seen a black purse around here?"
After hearing Jason's voice at the doorway, we quickly scrambled around to pick up our belongings. It would spell nothing but a disaster if he saw us in such a position. Neither of us would be able to show our face on campus. One quick glance at Emma, and she was on board. Still shaken from all the grinding. Barely able to stand, I picked her up and made a beeline for one of the empty rooms. Shutting ourselves in to avoid any scandal. Jason, who was supposed to be gone for the rest of the night, made his way around the hotel room in search of us. Stopping in front of the exact room we hid in. The knob of the door turning to no success. Panicking. We found ourselves arguing once again. A few hand gestures and angry expressions later, we determined all we could really do was lie.
"J-jason? W-what's up? I thought you left..."
"Oh, there you are... Well... One of those idiots left their apartment key in their purse, and... I can't really leave them outside, can I? Where's Oliver?"
"O-oliver? Uhm... Heeee... went out for a bit... We got into another fight, and he didn't wanna deal with me right now..."
"Hahaha... I am not surprised... Sooo, who won?"
"U-uhm... Me, of course! Hahahaha... You know, Oliver... All talk... No bite... The poor thing...."
"Well shit... Is that right? The others are going to love this... Well, you have fun bossing him around... He's mad now but he always keeps his word... Don't be too mean to him..."
"Y-yeah..."
"Before I forget... Is there like a black purse in there?"
"U-uhmm... N-nope... None that I can see... Just my stuff... Have you checked the living room?"
"Right right... Probably behind the furniture or something... Be right back..."
This bitch. I can't believe she fucking lied. And I mean sure, we were in a pretty compromising situation, but this little lie of hers got me pet duty. If I back out now, everyone's going to call me out. What was I supposed to do? Slave away for an entire week?
"Em! What the fuck was that?"
"Will you lower your fucking voice? He'll hear us... What're bitching about now?"
"What am I... Don't play dumb with me... If I didn't know any better, I think you just threw me under the bus... What the fuck do you mean YOU won?"
"Exactly what I said, duh... YOUUUU came... So you're the loser... LOSER!"
"What?!? We came at the same time, stupid!"
"Nuh uh... You? Make me? Cum? Ha! You're giving yourself too much credit... You could never make me cum-"
"Em? Did you say something?"
"Nothing! I-It's nothing! Sorry! Uhhhhh... My... my... my mom called! H-hahaha she can be kind of a worry wart... But it's fine! Were you... able to find the purse?"
"Ohhhh alright... Yeahhh no... Did you see those guys hanging around anywhere else?"
"Uhhh... They were hanging around the kitchen at one point... Maybe you might wanna check ther- Mm! Aaaa-"
"Em? You good?"
"M-mhm... I-I'm okay... Mmmph..."
"You don't sound okay..."
"I-it's nothing... R-really... M-My s-stoma... Aaa.. chs... just n-not a-agreeing with me r-right now... I'll b-be o-okay... P-promise..."
"Uhm... Okay? I'm gonna go check the kitchen real quick..."
"M-mhm... Y-you do that... Ahahah... Aaa- W-What f-f-fuck are you d-doing?"
It might've been a bit petty of me to mess with her while she was speaking to Jason. But come on, she had it coming. This haughty little princess could never admit a loss. Let alone a tie. So what else is there to do but to fuck with her. I mean "help" her. If she says I didn't make her cum, then the only right thing to do is to lend her a hand. Right? So I did just that. With her preoccupied, I stripped her of her boxers and got to work. To my surprise, she tasted almost sweet. My tongue now lapping over her exposed pussy. Slowly guiding myself over the opening, licking upwards to her clit. Sending shockwaves. Fingers hastingly coiled around my hair, doing her damnedest to yank me off. But to no avail. Her resistance only making it worse causing me to lick her with even more vigor. Emma stood there trembling, her body in shambles yet again as my tongue parted her lips. Leaving her a twitching, nonverbal mess. There a lecherous display of saliva and juices dripping down. As to not waste a single drop, I made sure to pay her thighs as much mind as to any other part of her body. Kissing along it. Still flailing, I pressed my nails deeper into her hips. The walls of her cunt squeezed down as my tongue delved deeper. Shaky breathes that were hard to conceal. The light in her eyes fading into a tempestuous haze. Her hips jerked and pulsed. A gush of heat greeting my tongue before falling to the floor.
"A-Aaa.. Aa.. A... F-f-fuckkk..."
"Hahahahah... Won't you look at that... I can make you cum... What does that make it? Two to one?"
"Livvvvv..."
Emma was ready to swing. Without as much as a second wasted, she had already tackled me to floor. Pushing down on my face and biting at what she could. Like a rabid dog, she was willing to tear limb from limb if it meant paying me back for the embarrassment. Luckily enough, Jason had heard the ruckus and called out to Emma. If it weren't for his intervention, I would have been marked more than I already was.
"Em? Is everything okay? I heard something fall..."
"O-oh y-yeah yeah! J-just dropped my duffle! Any luck on that purse?"
"Ugh... Nope... I tried looking for it on the- Hm? Sorry, give me a bit... Phone call..."
Even if she was pissed, I was surprised to see Emma switching up like that. Keeping such a such straight face even after beating the fuck outta me. But I guess she had her priorities. As I've mentioned, she’d rather drop dead than be seen straddling me. Which was funny. Like I wasn't already decorated in her bite marks.
"Are you fucking serious? Ugh yeah yeah... I'll be there in a minute...
"What was that about?"
"Those drunk idiots... were sitting on the purse the entire time... Anyway... If I leave now I'll still be able to make it home and get some rest before my shift... You going to be okay?"
"Y-yeah... Don't worry about me..."
"Alright... You take care... Oh and... Make sure to check on Oliver... God knows where he is.."
Well, don't you worry, Jason! Because behind door number 1, you'll find me directly under her!
"M-mhm... You guys drive safe..."
There she was. Staring daggers, ready to kill. With Jason out the door, there wasn't a damn thing that could stop her. But if I learned anything from today, it would be that Emma was as much of a sore loser as I was.
"Ohhhh, I'm so scared... What're you going to do? Hit me?"
"Mhm..."
"Fuck-... Hahahah... You punch like pussy... Taste like one too..."
"You're disgusting..."
"Go on, hit me... But this proves it... Youuuu can't even finish what you started..."
"Huh?"
"You heard me... It's still two to one... Whose the loser now? Lose-"
Bam! Emma, throwing another one dead center. My nose bleeding before I could even finish my sentence. With my eyes still recovering, Emma was nowhere to be seen. Not even a blurry figure had replaced her. Just the empty ceiling. In my confusion, my eyes were drawn south to an unfamiliar sensation. Finding the length of my cock was now resting against Emma's soft lips. Her shallow breaths not helping in the slightest. Perpetually hitting the back of cock. In response, an insatiable twitch had begun; begging to be engulfed. Before I could even adjust to the situation, Emma had taken me to the back of her throat. Bobbing her head relentlessly as a form of payback. A tight suction lingered, and all the while, she maintained her eye contact. Never breaking her gaze. Watching closely as I threw my head back from all the pleasure. Encouraging another vicious cycle of mouth fuckery, only ever stopping to catch her breath. Using this chance to regain myself. There I saw a mischievous smile that peeked from behind my member. Her tongue hanging freely over my tip. Drooling atop it as beads of precum leaked over, coating me. Effortlessly overwhelming me once more. This time, caressing my length with short, broad strokes. Her mouth guiding me to my climax. The tip bulging from the side of her cheek. Leaving me to let out such a distasteful groan as I finished.
"Mmmph! Eugh.... Yuck... There... Now... It's two to two... See? Whatever you can do... I can do better... So why don't you just save yourself the embarrassment and give up already?"
"Fuck off... I can do this all day..."
"Okay Captain America..."
It was nothing but a downward spiral. A constant back and forth of petty desperation. Two idiots, too stubborn to give up. Forcibly sinking their teeth wherever they damn pleased. An endless night of lust and violence. Two sides of the same coin. That flipped over and over. No method, being too much. From the bathroom floor to the dining room table. A punch here. A suck there. So much so that you couldn't quite tell if it was a hickey or a bruise. Despite what we've done, no amount of pride meant anything if it meant losing to the other. The only thing that mattered now was winning. There we sat, breathless. Another tie inhibiting our victory, reaching another pointless stalemate. Unsure of what to do, we sat there with one last option festering on our minds. Her eyes fixate on the twitching member pressing against her. Emma, shaking her head at such a ridiculous thought. And believe me, it was ridiculous. If at any point, this would probably be the best time to draw the line. Yet neither party completely objected. Just intoxicated eyes that met nervously in the middle. Anxious and waiting.
"A little late to pussy out now, don't you think? And you call yourself a man..."
"Who said anything about pussy-ing out? I just have some decency..."
"Ha... After what you've done? Don't make me laugh..."
"You're right... But do you really think I would back down and be your dog for a week? We both know we're too stubborn for that... And a little too damn prideful to back down now..."
"Exactly what I was thinking... So what're you waiting for, mutt? It's a little rude to keep a lady waiting... You just gonna sit there, or you gonna fuck me?"
Never would I have imagined that we'd end up in such a situation. It was a bit perplexing to see that feral little ankle biter waiting so patiently along my lap. The situation was tense. My confusion justified. Emma, the pompous annoying brat that I grown used to, wasn't quite there. It was as if she were a completely different person. This girl was curious. Scared even. The complete opposite of how Emma would carry herself. Watching intently as I worked myself into her. Burying my cock deep into her leaky cunt. A hint of pain briefly crossing her face. Forcing her to hide and bite down into my shoulder.
"I-if you even t-think about moving... I-I'm going to k-kill you..."
Seemingly enough, out of all the threats she's made today, I think she was serious this time. And I wasn't going to fuck around and find out. Emma remained still for the first few minutes. Taking but a moment to compose herself. Biding her time as she grew accustomed to the throbbing pain. I had imagined it would have been a bit easier, considering all the foreplay. But no. Even the slightest amount of movement rendered her incapable of keeping her voice. A shrill moan echoed throughout the room as my cock twitched in her warmth. Her pale figure clouded with shades of red, embarrassed to have let out such a sound. Frustrated, she gritted her teeth, steeling herself for the moment. Her hips rigid with motion, still finding it difficult to move. Despite the pain, she pressed forward. Gradually finding her rhythm, fucking me at a pace she deemed fit. It wasn't long before she had begun to enjoy herself. Rocking her hips without a care in the world. A slight hop as she rutted, causing her perky breasts to bounce in the process. Stimulating me even more. Having done so much throughout the night had taken toll on me. Luckily enough, her frantic little hips gave out. Stuttering at every thrust. And though, I was reaching my limit, so was she.
"H-hahah... S-slowing down, Em? Don't tell me you're gonna cum..."
"Y-you first... D-dipshit..."
It was slow. Excruciatingly slow. A full glass of water, ready to tip. One wrong move, and it'd be over. With each of us on the brink, guiding her hips was no simple task. If she were to even buck, the chances of me losing would be inevitable. I couldn't bear another second, watching Emma grind mindlessly against me. Those empty, solemn eyes that wanted nothing more than for me to cum. Seeing her intent, I did everything I could to even the playing field. Keeping her still, I pressed down, sinking her pretty little hips to the base. Squirming as she cockwarmed me. Rubbing her clit, sending shockwave after shockwave. Our brains numbing out from pleasure, forcibly edging each other into insanity. It took everything I had to stop myself. Every instinct telling me to push her down and fuck her senseless. Making her take every last dro-
"L-liv... P-Please... Mmmph... N-no more... I-I need it..."
"E-em?"
Three simple words. Casting away all morality, respect, and pride. Her hands rested neatly around my throat, bracing herself. Giving way to more freedom to move her hips. Emma was losing herself to the pleasure. With tears running down her face. Her climax drawing closer and closer. Paying no mind to my warnings nor savoring the moment. Only chasing the finish that we needed so damn much. Her pussy tightened around my cock. My cum filling her to the brim. A fire pooling deep inside. And before long, Emma had reached her peak. Collapsing atop of me, gasping for every inch of air she could find. Even with my mind abuzz, I still found the strength to caress Emma. Not that I needed to. It just felt right. Running my hands through her hair. Finding the words to say in such an awkward moment.
"Soooooo..."
"Just shut up..."
We laid there the entire night, not speaking a single word. Subtle moans that leaked out from time to time. Adjusting myself, pushing the cum deeper inside her. A few moments relapsing back to our lustful ways. Sharing but another sensual experience. Even as we cleaned, we found ourselves entangled with one another. The hotel phone ringing constantly, to our annoyance. Quickly picking it up, asking for an extension before slamming it back down. Our lips finding it's way back to one another. A day of scandal that we would never ever speak to another soul.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Liv... Mind checking this?"
"You might wanna add the data table there... Oh and here's the papers you wanted..."
"Thanks..."
"Okay okay... I get it... I get it... I know it's weird... I'll ask... I'll ask... Jeez... Heyyyy you two.... Uhm... A-are you guys feeling okay?"
"Mhm..."
"Yeah? Why wouldn't we be?"
"Y-yeah... You know... It's just that the team is... worried... Maybe you guys are working too hard... Uhmm... You know what? We're just kinda surprised that you guys aren't punching each other..."
"I-I don't know... I guess we just... don't feel like it?"
"R-right..."
On the car ride home, we agreed to leave it at a tie—or, more accurately, to never speak of it again. And though our dynamic at school has changed a bit. It doesn't quite mean that all our fights have stopped. We still argue on a daily basis, going for each other's throats. But I guess we go about it in a more literal sense, this time around.

I told y'all I was still working on this project! >:3c Chapter 26 of I'm Sorry, Teenage Mutant What Now? is out! Thank you so so so much to everyone recently who's taken the time to comment/send asks/etc etc etc, it makes me very happy... ; w ; The Hamatos are slowly improving upon their ninja skills, and the latest mission goes off without a hitch...! Mostly...? Read it on ao3 or below the cut.
[ prev ]
If you had tried to describe this scene to April a few months back, there’s no way she would have ever believed it. Hell, if you had tried to describe it to her a few weeks ago, she still probably wouldn’t have believed it, because the concept was just so… alien. Even after she knew about her brothers’ ‘mutant origins,’ it still felt alien. She couldn’t help but see them as anything but… people! Those were just her brothers. And the right way to see them was just the way she had always known them; as humans. And seeing them in ‘turtle mode,’ as Mikey had taken to calling it, felt so strange and uncomfortable. Not just because she wasn’t used to it, but because she knew that they weren’t used to it, and the way they had held themselves just always seemed so… unhappy. Like their own skin was burning them. She couldn’t help but look at them and the way they moved and how they held themselves and think, oh my god, they’re sick. Something is wrong. I have to help them. I have to take care of them.
But jesus, the way Mikey moved now? It was the most natural thing in the world. It was like he had been this way his entire life, and he couldn’t possibly seem more comfortable or at ease. All April could really think was, wow. He’s in his element, isn’t he?
She had been vaguely aware of this new ‘thing’ the guys were working on for a while, but this was the first time they actually tried it out for-real-for-real, out in the field, on some low-stakes outing. There wasn’t even a Dark Armor piece here or anything; they were just staking the place out because Foot Shack merchandise trucks came in and out of this parking garage a lot, and they were looking into it, just in case. Just practice, more than anything, with Raph leading the way and Yoshi once again on standby…
It was just so fluid. April watched in silent awe as her littlest brother slipped in and out of two different bodies like water, seamlessly transitioning from one to the other as he moved. Five fingers would be conjured to undo a latch on a grate, and then tucked back away again as if they had never been there. He’d flit from form to form to match each shadow and blend in.
At one point, even, when they were ascending a fire escape, making their way up to the roof to get a bird’s eye view, Mikey misstepped and he slipped-- and he fell. Every single person had jumped for a moment, and April could tell that all her brothers were about ready to dive after him. She was, too.
But they didn’t need to.
He was tucked into the safety of his shell before he even hit the ground.
And by the time the hard carapace was bouncing back up after smacking against the pavement, eliciting only a short clack with the impact, he was a human again, his feet under him, jumping back onto the fire escape to catch up again as if nothing had ever happened.
Raph and Leo were doing it, too, but… God. Not like Mikey.
But April had to admit-- even Raph and Leo were beginning to get the hang of it. They all were.
Well… All of them except for Donnie.
“You know,” she mumbled at some point once they got to the top of the roof, heaving her way upwards. Donnie reached over to grab her arm, helping hoist her the rest of the way up. “If either of us fell, we’d be totally screwed.”
“Yes, well,” they muttered in a deadpan. “Just trying to offer some solidarity to you, our sole human team member. I know it must be very difficult to be a minority.”
April scoffed softly, but didn’t push it.
Leo grinned big, stretching his arms over his head as the whole group made their way up to the rooftop. “Okay, uhhh, I don’t wanna jinx it--”
“Then don’t--” Donnie hissed.
“But this is actually going, like, really well?”
“Why would you say that?” Donnie sighed deeply, shaking his head.
“Oh, psh. As if you believe in all that, anyway,” Leo scoffed, waving him away with a flick of his wrist. “I’m just saying, like, we’re kind of being badasses!”
“All we’re doing is sneaking around an empty parking garage,” Donnie pointed out dryly, quirking a brow as he crossed his arms over his chest. “It’s not exactly high stakes.”
“See, Dee, this is your problem,” Leo sighed, shaking his head as he placed a hand on his hip. “You’re always focused on the negatives…!”
“Both of you shut up,” Raph said. “Leo is right--”
“HAH! Suck it--”
“Shut up,” Raph pressed, smacking a large palm over his little brother’s face in order to quiet him. “He’s right that we did good. Or. Well. We’re doin’ good so far. And Dee, nice job figurin’ out the bracelet thing! It’s way easier to swap back and forth without having to actually take it off.”
Donnie puffed up his chest a bit, seeming smug. “Yes, well, it isn’t a terribly complicated mechanism, it just took a bit of studying for me to unravel, truly no great feat--”
“Don’t get carried away,” April mumbled, leaning over to hip-check her brother briefly. Donnie huffed.
“Sooooo… now what do we do?” Mikey asked, turning to glance over the side of the roof, resting his elbows on the ledge. “‘Cause, uhhh, no offense? But this place is… suppperrrr boring!”
“Well,” Raph said, seeming a bit unsure of himself. “We, uh… We didn’t find anything evil or anythin’. Which is good! So I guess we…”
“Document the hell out of everything!” Donnie declared happily, moving to join Mikey’s side with a grin. “Snag pictures of the layouts, all exits and entrances, stairwells, and anything else that may be pertinent, and I can reverse engineer blueprints of the entire place with some beta software I have back home-- this would be the perfect chance to try it out. And then, if anything evil does ever happen here, we will be completely prepared!”
“Uh, yeah!” Raph agreed after just a beat of hesitation. “What Donnie said! That’s what we’re doing.”
“Impeccable leadership as always, dear Raphala,” Donnie sang, wasting no time at all in slinging his backpack from his back, beginning to unpack a cacophony of tech. “Now, I have HD, nightvision, two different drones, one macro and one micro, body cams, magnetic sonogram machines, patent pending, and a RED, which no, Mikey, you may not touch--”
“Aw, what!? No fair!”
“Ask Dad for your own!”
“But you already have one--”
April sighed deeply, rolling her eyes and resisting an exasperated smile. Oh boy. Donnie came prepared prepared.
That meant… This might take a while.
---
Casey had been told her entire life that she was too loud.
So she was well aware of the fact.
Her mother had told her, back when she was in contact with her. Her teachers had told her, back when she went to school. And her Senseis had told her, too, over and over again, gently informing her each time her volume got away from her that she needed to dial it back a bit. She was aware. She knew she was too loud.
But no one ever had anything to say when she was quiet.
Because she was capable. She had dedicated years of her life training to be a ninja-- obviously, she could be quiet. And really, she had always known how to be quiet. She had been good at it ever since she was small.
It was just that when she was quiet, no one ever had anything to say.
No one ever looked at her when she was quiet.
She’d fade away.
So it was easy, really, to find hiding places around the Foot’s hideout any time she had free time on her hands to burn away. She was quite good at tucking herself into little cracks and crevices, and always had been. The layout of their base really only lent to this. And she had only gotten better at it as time passed.
Perched up on the catwalk, curled up small and bent over, she could watch members of the Foot returning from their latest mission, greeted excitedly by the rest of their clan. They had been gone for some time now-- one of the many elite strike teams sent out to fetch more far-flung armor pieces. They weren’t all just conveniently clustered in New York, after all.
They had started sending these teams out months ago. And now, one by one, they all slowly returned, each with another piece of the armor in hand to add to their growing collection.
Every day, they got closer. She could feel the energy in the air, ever pitching higher and sharper the closer they got to their goal. Even her senseis were infected by it, brighter than she had ever seen them before.
And that was amazing. That was wonderful.
She remembered the praise she had gotten after that one mission-- after she faced down the Hamato Clan in a department store of all places. How pleased they had been with her. And god, that had been amazing.
But now she simply resented its absence.
And even though she had always known that there wasn’t really any chance that she’d be sent to join any of these special teams-- to be sent out to join them in the field and contribute to something greater, to be a true part of the clan and show them what she could do…
Every time another came back, it just sealed the reality of the matter that that door had closed. And she wasn’t going anywhere.
---
“Donnie, seriously--”
“What!? Do you want the 3D model to be accurate, or don’t you!?” He cried, whipping around to face her, and April groaned loudly, dragging her hands down her face.
“Why do we need a 3D model again!? Just make a blueprint!”
“Ah, yes, well, I could…” Donnie said, spinning on his heels with a grin. “But why have an inferior, two-dimensional recreation of a space when I could make a far superior, three-dimensional recreation!? That’s a whole entire other dimension!”
“Donnie!” April barked, scowling. “We have been here for hours. Do you have any idea what time it is?!”
“No, not really.”
“Well how about you check!?”
“Fine, fine, yes, the time is approximately-- Oh, sweet Galileo. Is it actually that late?”
“Yes!” All four of his siblings chorused, and Donnie scowled, a little pout blossoming on his face.
“... But… My model…”
“Donnie, you’ve already documented nearly every square inch of this place--”
“I’m sure the model will be fine, Purple,” Yoshi’s voice crackled over the radio. “It is time to go home.”
Donnie sighed deeply, giving a dramatic heave of his chest… but he reluctantly began to pack his gear away. “Okay, okay, fine. I will concede. But if there comes a time when we are in desperate need of a one-hundred-percent accurate third-dimensional model of this establishment, I hope you will all be prepared to eateth thy--”
“Shush. We’re on a stealth mission, remember?” Raph muttered, swiping at his head lightly. “C’mon, you guys. Leo, wake Mikey up, let’s go.”
Leo sighed, allowing the video he was playing on his phone to wrap up before he pocketed it, beginning to nudge his younger brother, curled up and slumped against him.
“C’mon, Angie, we’re going home,”
“Whaaaaa…” Mikey mumbled, blearily beginning to open his eyes-- blinking away the few stray rays of orange light that fluttered around his eyelashes even when he was just dozing. “Did we… win…?”
“Yep, we totally won. C’mon. Get up.”
Raph sighed deeply. “Do you want me to carry--?”
“No! I can do it!” Mikey woke up properly now, quickly scrabbling up to his feet.
April sighed deeply. “My parents are going to kill me for being out this late,” she grumbled. “And when they kill me, I’m killing all of you, just for the record!”
“Don’t kill me! Kill Donnie!” Leo protested.
“Oh, like any of you were keeping track of time and keeping him from going totally Donnie about this whole thing!”
“Hey--”
“Neither were you,” Mikey pointed out, and April scowled, grinding her teeth.
Dammit.
She hated when he had a point.
“Whatever. C’mon, let’s get out of here,” she said with a huff. “You good, Donnie?”
“All set,” he replied, tossing his bag back over his shoulder. “Let us bounce.”
And so they did.
The good news was that Leo was getting a lot better about this whole portalling thing with the help of the weird mystic sword he had! Which was cool, so the commute home? So do-able!
The bad news was that it was still way past her curfew. She quietly cursed herself for letting them be out so late. She hadn’t even realized the time until she glanced at her phone and noticed all the texts… and the missed calls.
“You good, April?” Raph questioned, frowning a bit as she hurriedly gathered her things, having traded her certified Ninja Gear for street clothes, quickly shoving things into her bag and toeing on her shoes.
“I’m fine, it’s all good,” she muttered.
“Do you want me to walk you home…?” Yoshi questioned, his brows furrowed. “I’m sure I could talk to your parents--”
“It’s fine, Yosh. Don’t worry about it. They’re chill! They probably, like… barely noticed I’m late!” She said, forcing a smile.
“Alright, well, if you need anything--”
“Right! Got it, thanks, bye!” She chirped, throwing herself out the door and slamming it shut behind her before she could look at their sad, guilty faces any more. Ugh. It wasn’t their fault, really. I mean, it was, but no more than it was her own.
I should have set an alarm, she thought bitterly.
On a stealth ninja mission? So it can go off in the middle of you trying to sneak past a bad guy or something? Yeah, brilliant plan, she thought immediately after.
When April quietly crept back into her own apartment, slipping her key into the side door, the house seemed quiet. The kitchen lights were off, and there was no screaming or yelling right off the bat. That was a good sign.
The living room lights, however, she could already see from here… were on. That was a less good sign.
Drawing in one last deep breath, she darted the rest of the way inside, bumping the door closed with her hip.
“Hey, guys, I’m home…!”
“April!” Her mom responded to the call almost immediately, and half a second later, April was no longer alone in the kitchen. Warm yellow light flooded the space as a light switch was clicked on, and April winced slightly, blinking a few times to adjust. “There you are-- where in the world have you been?! Do you have any idea what time it is?!”
“Uh, yeah, my bad!” She laughed nervously, throwing her hands up as if to surrender. “Kinda lost track of time, uh, I was just over at the Hamatos doing homework and stuff…”
“Oh, were you?” That was her dad, now, and April winced a tiny bit at the tone he used, which meant that she had fucked up. “Because we went over knocking on their door ten minutes ago to come and get you, and no one answered.”
Oop. Fuck.
“Oh, yeah, we ran over to the corner store to get some snacks, so…?”
“In the middle of the night? By yourself?” Her mom protested, and April huffed softly, rolling her eyes.
“Uh, no? I literally just said that I went with the Hamatos--”
“Hey! Watch the attitude, miss,” her dad immediately cut in, and April winced. “I don’t think you have any room to be being huffy at us when you’re coming home two hours past curfew, and wouldn’t pick up your phone… Do you have any idea how many times we called you!?!”
“I’m sorry!” She said, throwing up her hands. “I forgot I had it on silent, I just, I wasn’t looking at the clock…!”
“For two hours?” Her mom cried. April bit the inside of her cheek, feeling her stomach flip-flop in response to the slight crack in her mother’s voice. “April, baby, you-- you can’t do that! This isn’t okay!”
“It was an accident--!”
“You can’t just disappear!” She continued. “You can’t just leave us not knowing where you are, we can’t--!”
“I know! I know, I’m sorry, okay? It was an accident!” April pressed, her face flushed. “I know, okay? I really, really didn’t mean to…! I just… I wasn’t paying attention. Okay?”
She frowned, wrinkling up her nose and glaring at her feet.
“Sorry.”
For a few long moments, the kitchen was silent.
Her father heaved a long, shuddering sigh.
“No more phone on silent,” he finally said. “When we text or call you, we expect you to answer right away. Understood?”
“... Yeah. Okay,” April grumbled softly, kind of toeing at the kitchen tile. She was sure Donnie could help her… figure out a way to make that work when they were out on missions and stuff…
“And this is the last time you miss curfew,” he added in, his eyes narrowed. “Full stop. We are not doing this again. Understood?”
“... Yeah.”
“April.”
“Yes. Understood, Dad,” she sighed loudly, tilting her head back and resisting the urge to roll her eyes, frustration prickling at her stomach.
“... Go to bed,” her dad finally said, his arms still crossed over his chest. “And you come straight home after school tomorrow.”
“Wha-- but Dad! I was gonna--”
“Do not argue with me April O’Neil,” he snapped. “Bed. Now. We’re not discussing this any further.”
April really, really thought about discussing it further.
But she didn’t.
For a lot of reasons. One being that she valued her life and freedom.
The other being that she couldn’t stand to look at her mom’s face anymore. Not when she was staring at her like that.
It wasn’t like she had never lied to her parents before. Of course she had! What teen doesn’t? She had fibbed about plenty of things before. Yes, I did brush my teeth already. No, I didn’t unlock all the parental controls on the computer. Yes, I am going to Bailey’s to study for chemistry and not anywhere else or for any other reason. Etc. etc. etc.
But she had never lied… like this before.
April ground her teeth, kicking her door shut as she threw her bag down, flopping down onto her bed and burying her face into the nearest pillow with a scowl. She suddenly felt unwelcome tears pricking at the corners of her eyes, and she tried to will them away, though with mixed success.
A little part of her thought, they’d understand if you explained everything to them.
But a much larger part of her said, are you literally insane?
Because, really… how do you explain something like this? How would she even begin? What would she say? And even if she did try, even if she did think it was a good idea, even if she did want to, she…
She couldn’t.
Because it wasn’t her secret to tell.
April had known Raph, Donnie, Leo, and Mikey since she was six. She used to go over to their house every day after school until her parents came home. Their families went on day trips together. They celebrated holidays together. Her parents knew the Hamatos nearly as well as they knew her. They had always had this… weird, amazing blend of Hamato and O’Neil, pressed close in such a way that it was hard to see where one started and the other began sometimes.
And she had always loved that. She had always adored this.
But she had never felt a pull like this before.
She had never felt like she had to choose between being an O’Neil or a Hamato before.
---
“Daddy!” April shrieked.
She waited a moment, pausing to see if she’d get a reply, but after five seconds passed without a response, she breathed in deep, repeating the call with the volume cranked up.
“Daddy!”
That one worked. Her dad’s head popped out from the apartment a moment later, peering through the door that was always kept propped open when she played in the alley like this. “I’m comin, I’m comin, baby, hang on--”
“Come look!” April bade, waving her arms hurriedly. “Hurry up!”
“I’m hurrying! I’m hurrying!” Her dad laughed, quickly toeing on some sneakers before venturing out into the concrete jungle, half-jogging his way over to where she was crouched in the alley, moving to squat down next to her.
“What? What is it?”
“Lookit what I found!” She squeaked excitedly, pointing to a single feather resting on the asphalt. “Look! A feather!”
“Oh, wow! Good find, sunshine.”
“Can I pick it up!?”
“... Yeah, okay, so long as you wash your hands afterward.”
April absolutely wriggled with excitement, immediately snatching the feather up from the ground, turning it over in her hands a few times to examine. One side of it was this pale, cloudy gray, all fluffy and soft, but the other side was a sleek, shiny shade of cobalt blue. Just holding it made her grin, and she looked up at her dad with wide eyes.
“What kinda feather is it?”
“I dunno,” her dad said, shrugging a bit, resting his elbows on his knees. “But I bet we could find out.”
---
“Casey.”
Casey whined softly, curled up a bit further under the covers. Was it time for school already…? But she didn’t wanna get up…
“Hey. C’mon, Casey. Wake up.”
Wait, wasn’t it a Saturday…?
“Noooo…”
“No?”
“Noooooo.”
“What’s wrong, Case?”
“I’m sleeping, Daddy…”
“Oh, you’re sleeping?”
“Yeah!”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize,” her father exclaimed with faux surprise, drawing back slightly. “Well, if you’re sleeping, and you don’t want to go hiking up on Newton Hill with me--”
Casey’s eyes shot open.
“You’re going out into the woods?!” She gasped, immediately upright in bed, her eyes wide.
“I am,” her dad confirmed, this big, wide grin growing on his face. “I was hoping you’d come with me, but, I mean, if you’re still sleeping…”
“No! No, I’m awake!” She squeaked, just barely managing to contain herself and keep her volume down. She threw her covers back, scrambling quickly from bed. “I swear I’m awake! Please can I come hiking with you?!”
Her dad laughed.
“Ah, how can I say no to that face?” He teased, reaching down to ruffle her hair. “Hurry up and get dressed, sunshine, and let’s get out of here.”
---
April gasped, jumping over her dad’s arm so that she could point at the screen of his laptop.
“That one! That’s the feather!” She exclaimed. “It looks just like ours!”
“Hmmm…” Her father hummed appraisingly, leaning into slightly to squint, before he gave a firm nod. “I do concur, April, I think that is our feather! Here, let’s double-check. Are the colors the same?”
“Yeah!” April said, grinning wide as she held the feather up. “Look! It’s the same blue.”
“And the same shape, right?”
“Uh-huh!”
“And we measured it--”
“And it’s twelve centimeters! Look, Daddy! It’s this one!” She insisted, and her father laughed.
“Yeah, okay. You’re right. Definitely our feather.”
“What bird is it!?”
“According to this, it’s a mallard feather.”
“A mallard?” April echoed. “What’s that?”
“It’s a type of duck!”
“A duck!?” April cried, her eyes widening, holding her prize up in amazement. “This is a duck feather!?”
“It sure is, sunny girl.”
“Whoa! That’s so cool!”
“You know,” her dad said. “I bet if we went down to the park, we might be able to find some more feathers…”
---
Cassandra was absolutely alight with energy, bouncing from foot to foot as she scampered around, practically doing laps around her dad. The drive over had been equal parts exhilarating and tortuous, with Casey wriggling in her car seat the entire time, her face pressed up against the window.
This was her favorite thing in the world.
She loved Newton Hill.
“Daddy, I wanna go all the way to the top!!!” She exclaimed, bouncing up and down, grabbing onto his pants leg to yank at him.
“All the way to the top?” He echoed dramatically.
“Yes!”
“Alright, you got it,” he hummed, fishing something from his pocket before kneeling down next to her. “All the way to the top. I think we can do it.”
“We can,” Casey agreed excitedly, leaning against his knee and leaning over slightly so she could peer at the item in his hands.
“Alright. Let’s do it,” her dad enthused. “But first-- I have got a job for you, Casey.”
Casey blinked in surprise as her father pressed the stopwatch into her palm, tilting her head slightly to the side.
“I have a job?”
“You have a job,” he confirmed. “You are gonna be in charge of timing us.”
“Timing us?”
“Yep! Here, you press this button to start the time-- and this button to end it. And you--” He pointed to her decisively, this big, mischievous grin on his face. “Are gonna find out how long it takes us to get from here to the top of the trail.”
Casey tilted her head to the side.
“Why?”
“Because,” her father declared, his hands on his hips as he rose back up to his feet. “David from work bet that I couldn’t get all the way up to the top in four hours. So now I’ve gotta prove him wrong.”
Casey stared at her father for a second.
And then she gasped.
“He bet we couldn’t do the whole trail in four hours!?” She shrieked in offense.
“He sure did, Case.”
“HOW DARE HE!” She wailed, throwing her head back.
This was the other best part of Newton Hill. She could be as loud as she wanted out here.
“Exactly!” Her father sighed, throwing out his hands with a dramatic shake of his head. “I knew you’d understand. So obviously, we have to show him up! You up for the challenge, sunshine?”
“Yes!” She cried, immediately setting off-- hesitating only long enough to run back, grabbing onto her dad’s pants leg and yanking at him. “Come ON! Hurry up! We are gonna WIN! Let’s GO!”
---
“Come on! Hurry up! Let’s go!” April squealed, yanking at her Dad’s hand impatiently. “Look! I see one!”
“I’m coming, April, I’m coming!” Her dad laughed, jogging slightly to keep up with the enthusiastic five-year-old. “Hang on, sunshine.”
April darted across the lawn, hopping over wayward twigs or stones until she got to the water’s edge, waving her arms excitedly as she knelt down to pluck the feather from the ground.
“Look!” She said, beaming as she turned to show her dad. “Do you think it’s another duck feather?!”
“Might be. Or it could be a goose.”
“I hope it’s a goose,” April said, scampering her way back over to her dad, who knelt down to hold open the ziploc baggie for her. April deposited the feather inside, along with the several other specimens they had already collected. “We already have a duck feather.”
“Yeah, but maybe it’ll be a different kind of duck,” her dad countered, zipping the baggie back up once their prize was safe inside. April paused at this, tilting her head to the side slightly. Oh! Another kind of duck? She hadn’t even thought about that!
“Well, then, I hope it’s a different kind of duck. Or a goose,” she declared, grinning big. “When we get back home, can we show Mommy all the feathers?”
“Of course we can,” her dad said. “I’m sure she’ll be thrilled for you to show her. Especially if you can tell her which feather is which!”
“I will. I’m gonna look it up. I’m gonna do research,” April declared proudly, grinning as she spun around on her heel. “Come on! We gotta find some more. I wanna have a bunch for mommy.”
---
Casey froze in place, her body going rigid as a tiny little gasp caught itself in her throat.
“Daddy!” She whispered, her voice hushed, but fervent. “Daddy, lookit! Under the rock!”
After hiking for two hours now, Casey only occasionally electing to ride on her dad’s shoulders rather than racing up the trail, poking at every leaf, stone, and mushroom they came across, the pair had finally elected to take a break, settling down on the stones of a creekbed to rest and munch on the snacks her father had packed along. The stopwatch she was wearing around her neck was still ticking away-- but they were making good time. Certainly enough time to catch their breath.
And it was here that Casey spotted a tiny black-and-yellow snake-- just barely poking its head from beneath the shadows of a stone just inches away from them. Its little pink tongue flicked out a few times as it examined the world hesitantly, turning its head from side to side, as if checking for something.
“Whoa!” Her dad breathed, keeping care to keep his voice soft once he spotted the creature. He slowly moved to place a hand on her shoulder, patting her gently. “Nice eye, Casey.”
“It’s a real snake!”
“It is.”
“What kind is it?”
“Probably a garter snake, I’d bet,” he whispered, grinning ever so slightly. “I bet he wants to come out and sun himself on the rocks.”
“Why?”
“Reptiles are cold-blooded, Casey. They’ve gotta warm themselves up with the sun, or else they get too cold.”
“Oh,” she said, her eyes wide. “... He’s so cool…”
“He is,” her dad agreed, shooting her a small grin. “Good job, sunshine. I never even would have noticed that little guy! I would have totally missed him.”
Casey absolutely beamed. “Really?”
“Yep!” He confirmed, chuckling softly, leaning over to ruffle her long black hair, carding his fingers through it briefly. “But you’re so smart, of course you saw it… Alright. You ready to get moving again? I bet that little dude would be pretty excited if he got to come out in peace and warm himself up.”
She nodded excitedly, wasting no time at all in beginning to get herself back to her feet. Despite all the running and jumping and climbing she had already done, she was suddenly filled with energy once more.
“I’m ready, Daddy!”
---
“And this one is a pigeon…”
“Mmm-hmmm…”
“And this is a pigeon…”
“I see…”
“And this one a pigeon feather, too…”
“Ah…”
“And this is a starling!”
“Oh!”
“And this is a pigeon!” April exclaimed excitedly, spreading the feathers out on the paper towel slightly, grinning big. “... There are a lotta pigeon ones.”
“That does make sense,” her mom said, smiling a tiny bit. “Thank you so much for showing me, baby! This is so impressive! I can’t believe you found all of these all by yourself!”
“Nu-uh!” April protested, turning to grin big up at her mother. “Daddy helped me! Except for the first one. I found that one all on my own.”
“Well, then, good job to your Daddy, too,” her mom remarked, and April just caught her shoot a smile across the kitchen to her dad, who was busy preparing dinner. He smiled a tiny bit, too.
“I’m gonna make a chart for them and stuff. In a book,” she declared proudly, beginning to climb her way up into her mom’s lap, absolutely beaming as she did so.
“April, sweetheart, you need to wash her hands--”
“Will you help me make it? Pleasseeee? I wanna make it look cool.”
---
Casey was so tall.
Every time they got all the way up here, to the very top of the hill, up as high as they could go, she would always think, wow. This is the tallest we can get. This is so tall.
And then every time, her dad would pick her up and put her on his shoulders, and then she’d be even taller.
And it had only taken them three hours and forty-two minutes to get here.
“There’s not even any clouds!” Casey marveled, eyes absolutely sparkling as she leaned back slightly, clinging to her dad’s head to keep her balance. “It’s just blue!”
“Yeah, it’s a nice day, isn’t it? Perfect for hiking,” he declared, grinning. “Can you believe David said we couldn’t make it!?”
“David is WRONG!” She declared, just as loud as she possibly could, and she grinned at how her voice carried. It made her feel all shimmery. Her dad laughed.
“You wanna yell?”
“YES!” She gasped. “You do it, too! I wanna do it together!”
“Okay, okay. We’ll go on the count of three. You ready?”
“Mmm-hmmm!”
“Okay. One… Two…”
Casey took a deep breath in.
“Three!”
Throwing her head forward, her eyes shut tight and her hands balled into fists, Cassandra reached as deep into her little six-year-old chest as she could possibly reach, and she dredged up the biggest, longest, loudest howl that she could possibly conjure. It always hurt her throat a little, but it never hurt more than it felt good. It made her entire body vibrate. And her dad was screaming, too, holding onto her hands with his own big ones, the two of them harmonizing together as they screamed out into the woods from the top of the hill, their voices echoing out into the sky.
She kept going until there was no more left in her, running out of air entirely and left with just shaking, heaving breaths, her shoulders trembling as she panted.
And for a second, both of them were both quiet. And then finally, her dad chuckled, tossing his shoulders a few times to jostle her slightly.
“One of these days, you’re gonna shatter my eardrums, sunshine. I hope you know that,” he laughed, and Casey just grinned, hanging onto him.
“I like yelling,” she hummed.
And for a bit longer, it was quiet again.
Just the two of them on the top of the world.
And then Dad’s cellphone began to ring.
Casey paused, frowning slightly as she watched her father fish the device from his pocket, glancing at the screen and scoffing in such a way that Casey already knew who was on the line.
“Damn. Too bad we still have service up here, huh?” He tsked, and Casey frowned.
“Don’t be mean to mommy,” she muttered petulantly. “I don’t like it.”
“Sorry, Casey. My bad,” he sighed, crouching down so he could ease her down off his shoulders and back onto her own two feet. “Here. Just gimme two seconds to talk to her, okay?”
“Can I talk to her when you’re done?” She asked, and Dad hesitated.
“Uh, maybe! Lemme just talk to her real quick first and see what she wants. I promise it’ll be fast. Here, hang on. You can time me, okay?” He said, returning the stopwatch back to her hands. “Think you can do that?”
“Yeah…”
“Good girl. I’ll be right back,” Dad said, offering her one last crooked smile before turning away, looping off a few paces before finally picking up his phone.
“Hello?”
“Yeah?--”
“Yeah, I know.”
“No, we just went up hiking--”
“I know that, but it’s just one day. Yeah, I know that… I’m going to!”
“She loves it up here!”
“I will, just-- Could you please just listen to me?-- No, I didn’t--”
Casey frowned. She settled down to sit in the grass and hit the ‘start’ button on the stopwatch.

Homestuck Beyond Canon Upd8 for October 8, 2024
Here we are! This might be the end of the current story arc, and we'll finally get to see if Vriska successfully makes it out of this. I was also informed a while back that today is the one year anniversary of the HICU taking over the comic.
Before I jump in, I had a theory I wanted to put out there. I was thinking more about how Vriska was always destined to go down these two paths and what that might mean. Now we know she had different fates than the two we saw. In fact, we saw a third indirectly. We saw it when an Aradiabot from a doomed timeline where Gamzee snapped early revealed a surprise final piece of Doc Scratch's code. That reveal was a book Gamzee made in the blood of the other trolls. And Vriska's blood is in there.
But only two Vriskas are ever seen in the bubbles, probably because the Vriskas that survive to their creation are always the same. Do any Vriskas lost along the way matter? We don't really know. They might still be important, but the lion share of Vriska appears to be split into two fates.
Now, thinking back to the epilogues (I know that can be hard) Dirk describes the process of becoming a fully realized or ascended God Tier.
And some of you just saw where I'm going with this.
Dirk became a full God of Heart first because of how connected he was to his splinters. Rose followed as her continued explorations of fortune connected more and more of her deviating paths through Paradox Space. And Dave . . . well he got a very Dave ascension. Honestly with how well he handled the multiple version of himself running around, an Obama pep talk was likely more than what was needed.
But there's only two Vriskas that need to come together.
If Vriska can accept herself, the team on Candy C will have a fully realized and ascended Thief of Light on their side. One that has already exerted narrative control before! That might be enough to help fix a lot. And if Vriska has anything to say about it, and you know she will, things might really start moving.
News Upd8
We get a team post this time! They're mostly just excitedly gushing about the milestone and some of the things that have happened in the past year. But they also reminding us the first big flash is coming. I honestly can't wait!
James mentions that this is not originally what was planned and that they were just going to make a bunch of connected shorts originally. I still like stuff like that, but I'm glad they were able to get this going again.
There's a lot of thank yous from the team. But I still feel like I want to thank them for continuing this in such a wonderful way. This comic and this community has been really important to me for a while now, and I'm eternally grateful there are still "semi-official" things coming from it.
James does give us a bit of an outline on the progress for EOA1. It sounds like things are still early, but they're hoping to hit one of the "funny numbers". The next one will be 11/11 or one of the kid's birthdays. But 413 sounds like a good project deadline to me.
They're continuing with two upd8s this month, so I'll need to try to make sure I catch the next one in a more timely fashion.
Upd8
We've cut away from Vriska. As the news said, no more VN for us. We return to Candy Earth C and our stressed out adults.
Tumblr media
Kanaya has left on her own for now. Her fury has not yet been satisfied it seems, with what Rose took as an implied threat from her. Also, I just noticed the subtle space symbol in Jade's shield. Nice touch!
Still a lot of justly tense and uncomfortable conversation going on. Jade really wants to fix things. She feels like she's the one to blame and she needs to make things right. But Rose doesn't particularly seem receptive. I don't think she wants Jade's help. Also, there's a mention of Rose losing her temper over a conversation about her mom. I think it's mostly meant as a little nod to how much older they all are and that things have happened that we never got to see. But I can't help but wonder how things went down.
Yeah, this is pretty painful. Jade really wants to do the right thing, but Rose has formed her own opinion of the best course of action. And now she's trying to convince Jade it doesn't involve her.
Hamster guy? I'm pretty sure I'd remember hamster guy so this has to be something new.
Honestly, Jade is sounding a bit more mature than Rose here. It's painful, but she's right. Reality has very little to do with a person's "truth." The only sensible path to change a person's perspective is usually the empathetic one where you focus on understanding where they're coming from. Even then, all you can usually accomplish is being someone they might turn to when an external event breaks the reality in their head.
Speaking of personal truth's, Jade has been feeling that so many of her friends haven't really cared about what's going on. That might have been a little true for Dave, but I think she got a completely wrong read on John. John very much cared, he just wasn't good at doing anything about it. That's one of the reasons he suffered from depression, one of the reasons he was always trying to fix something or do something important. But between the glimpses of her in the epilogues and the credits, I get the impression she was constantly trying to reach out to him. From her perspective, John's depression might have seemed to be apathy.
But big surprise the one that grew up so isolated is having the hardest time getting a read on people.
Tumblr media
THE ART!!!
Urgh! Oh this is bad! Rose is just suppressing everything she's dealing with. Admittedly, there's a lot going on right now. But it sounds like she's not trying to process any of the stuff that's been occurring on this crazy version of Earth C. She especially can't seem to deal with Roxy, and that's apparently been causing more problems than we've seen.
I'm not sure I agree with Rose here. I don't believe an absolute truth has to be derived from authority. But then, to the best of my knowledge, I don't live in Paradox Space. It's hard to hold to the truth of observable reality when it can be so easily changed and manipulated.
Interesting . . . Rose has turned to her powers as a form of coping mechanism. As things get hard, she begins trying to sort out all the "meandering side-paths." The rote of it, the monotony, is soothing to her the way a "cozy game" is to me. And if she's successful, she gains insight and even something to look forward to.
Oh no! Rose has seen a future where Calliope will sacrifice herself to try and save everything! And worse it doesn't work! Things are apparently more dire than we thought, and that's with Jane running around in Condesce mode!
Huh! If I'm parsing that right, Rose is going to suffer a mortal wound but one that won't trigger the God Tier clock. Instead she'll have to recover like a normal person will. Ouch! This immortality really isn't all it's cracked up to be.
And the other shoe drops! The reason why Rose agreed to something like this, the reason she's been so cold and distant. While she's recovering from the bullet wound, Kanaya will be alone. With what she's done, Kanaya will have the impetus to seek independence. She hasn't seen the end result, but she believes Kanaya will have a more fulfilling life this way. She's been driving her wife away so this Kanaya won't be left in paralyzed mourning the way Meat Kanaya seems to be. That is a horribly dangerous game, and one almost guaranteed to backfire.
But apparently Rose doesn't think any of it matters. Like Dirk, she thinks this universe is irrelevant and doomed. She knows what John needed to do, and here John didn't do it. She's hasn't quite gotten to the optimistic point of nihilism, but the apparent lack of meaning is providing her with some relief.
Tumblr media
Do I honestly need to say anything here!
Rose has been able to play the rain for a while now. But as her powers have matured, she's gotten better at it. Though this makes it sound not so much like she's playing it, as dancing to a tune beyond her control. But then, this Rose doesn't feel the need to control anything.
Tumblr media
Can you imagine accidentally bumping head first into a figure of myth and legend?
Tumblr media
Karkat and Kanaya have a bond that goes well beyond anything they ever developed with their human lovers. Even if Karkat's power wasn't literally over the bond of Blood, they've survived so much together it honestly wouldn't matter. And right now, Karkat's opinion of the humans that sat on the sidelines while their Troll friends needed them isn't exactly high.
Tumblr media
COME ON!!!
Tumblr media
Jane is still processing her conversation and some of things that came of it. Does Jane think she could have convinced more of her friends to stand with her? Does she think she could have saved Dirk from the fate he chose?
Also in a very real way she doesn't quite look human in that image. Even though I think this might be a human moment for her, she's made her visage, consciously or not, monstrous. The Condesce's crown is a collar around her neck.
Unfortunately she's decided that rather than learn from her mistakes, she might as well just plow on and build something new and better. She is a god after all.
Tumblr media
Love how they're teasing out the reveal of what has come of Jake's epiphany.
I'm not posting that image. Even with my heavy use of spoiler tags, I'm not risking it.
Oh come on! You didn't make it a clean shot! Goddammit Jake!
Tumblr media
Well that's one way to cut from that. I mean HOLY SHIT!!!
Tumblr media
Jake appears to not be out of this yet. This almost feels like a callback to Vriska sitting on the beach after a failure. Can the big man recover from it?
And we end with Rose having just left Tavy and Yiffy with a letter and some snacks.
Wow! That was intense!
It legit seems like nothing, not even a bullet, is changing Jane's mind. And I mean, I know Jane is a god, but come on! Could Jake seriously not get a good clean shot off? Wow!
Y'know, honestly I can see it. Despite his awakening, he had to play it out like one of his movies. That was just enough time for Jane to realize what was going on and quickly dodge out of the way. Then, rather than quickly ending it, he had to quibble out an apology.
Honestly, I just don't think he was truly capable of doing it, so he sabotaged himself. He's just lucky that all the pummeling he's gone through has toughened him up enough that he might get another shot. That is if he doesn't get wiped out in whatever that cake-shaped, doomsday device she has in orbit does.
Fuck that was a ride. And a really tense one at that! Guess now we're waiting for next upd8 this month!

Talk to Me! | Read on AO3
Tumblr media
1993 —Austin, Texas
Two years after Tommy joined the military; two years after Sarah’s mom left
“I can’t stay,” she argued, shoving clothes into a suitcase.
Joel stood in the doorway, arms crossed, but made no move to stop her. “Can we at least talk about it?”
She scoffed, shaking her head. “Now you wanna talk, Miller? I’ve been trying to talk for months.”
Joel heaved a sigh, running his hands over his jaw. “I know —I’m sorry, okay? It’s complicated —,”
“You think I didn’t know that going into this?” She asked, turning to finally look at him. “You think that I didn’t know how hard this would be, between you having a baby and a wife that just up and left? I knew it would be complicated, Joel.”
“Then I don’t get why you’re leaving,” he pressed, finally stepping into the room. “You’ve lived here your whole life —,”
“I’ve lived here since I was fifteen,” she countered, looking at him with annoyance. “And have had feelings for you since I moved here.”
“Don’t say that,” he warned, crossing his arms. “You’ve had plenty of boyfriends; shit, you dated Tommy.”
“Oh my god, when we were sixteen,” she groaned, throwing her hands in the air. Then she stopped, taking a deep breath to calm herself. “You wanna talk? Let’s talk. I got accepted into a great program in Seattle. I have deferred that acceptance for two years to help take care of Sarah since Tommy left for basic, under the condition that I would go when he got home.
“Just because you have been dancing around whether or not you have feelings for me doesn’t mean I don’t know what I feel. And it damn well doesn’t give you the right to tell me I cannot go.”
“I never said you couldn’t,” he countered, reaching out to take the shirt she had in her hands. “I just —what’s so special about Seattle that you can’t have here?”
“My family is there. That’s what’s in Seattle, Joel. And a damn good aerospace program that wants me. Do you not get how big a deal that is?” She stared up at him, frowning deeply. “I have spent years being told I wasn’t good enough by every fucking teacher I’ve ever had —and now Boeing fucking wants me. I can’t keep blowing them off. Tommy comes home tomorrow, and my flight is booked for the day after. If I don’t go now —I won’t ever go.”
They stared each other down for a long time, Joel’s eyes pleading with her to stay. But she has spent the last two years helping take care of a child that wasn’t her’s, deferring an acceptance that never should have been deferred, and loving a man who couldn’t decide what he wanted. There were a million reasons for her to go; she just needed one good one to stay.
But she knew he’d never give her that reason.
“Tell me why I should stay, Joel,” she finally demanded, looking up at him with tears in her eyes. “Tell me what I know you want and I’ll stay.”
“Darlin’, I can’t —,”
“Don’t call me that,” she snapped, pointing at the door. “Just…just get out of my house, Joel.”
She watched him turn and leave, taking her heart with him.
2003 —Austin, Texas
Two weeks before the outbreak
“When are you gonna let me take you back out?” Tommy asked, leaning against the bar.
The dive bar wasn’t terribly busy; just a handful of people that knew she was back in town for a few days. Boeing was working with Johnson Space Center in Houston on a new project and she was sent down to work with the teams at NASA. It felt a bit surreal, being the lead on such a huge project.
She’d been back a handful of times since moving back to Seattle; mostly to visit Tommy and other friends. Life got busy, things changed, and it was never easy to just hop on a plane and visit. But now, with this new program, she was going to be settling down in Houston. Austin was a bit of a trek, but she missed her friends and time heals all wounds.
“We’ve been down that road, Miller,” she reminded him with a teasing grin. “If I recall, you cheated on me with Danielle.”
“And Noelle. And Gina.”
She looked up from the bar at the familiar voice, turning around to see Joel sauntering in with a soft smile on his face. Leaning back against the bar, she lifted her beer in greeting.
Maybe time didn’t heal all wounds.
But it sure as hell made the heart grow fonder.
“Joel Miller, as I live and breathe,” she greeted, though remained seated. “Still out here ruining Tommy’s life, I see. Didn’t know about the other two.” She gave Tommy a pointed look, but there was a grin on her face.
“Someone’s gotta keep’em humble,” Joel answered easily, taking the empty seat beside her. “How long you in town, darlin’?”
If he saw her flinch at the nickname, he didn’t react.
“Austin, a week,” she explained, lifting the beer to her lips. Her eyes dragged over his face, taking in every little change she’d missed in him. “Houston, at least a year.”
He raised a brow, sitting up a bit straighter. “Moving back, then? Seattle not cuttin’ it?”
“Seattle is just fine,” she countered, turning back in her seat to face the bar. “I’m working out at the Space Center, with the shuttle program. Lead engineer.”
“Shit,” he chuckled, shaking his head as the bartender handed him a beer of his own. “That’s impressive.”
She just shrugged in response, smiling behind her beer now. It was easy to fall back into it with Joel; like no time had passed at all. But that’s how it always was. Joel was an easy friend to make, and an even easier person to fall for.
What started as a stupid crush on the older neighbor boy had turned into so much more —ending just like she expected it would. Him not realizing she even existed until she was old enough to make a move herself, and by then he had a little girl and a wife. And even when his wife up and left, Joel couldn’t make up his mind about what he wanted from her.
“I’ve always been impressive,” she teased, glancing over at him. “Not my fault you’re blind in your old age.”
Joel scoffed, taking a swig of his beer. “I’m almost certain you and I are barely five years apart.”
“Feels like decades.”
They fell into a silence as the bar started to liven up, people wandering in and getting the party started. Her fingers fiddled with a bracelet on her wrist —one that Joel had given her the first Christmas she spent with him and Sarah. She couldn’t find herself parting with it; as much as she knew she should, she just couldn’t. The charm —a single star —was loose and she tried tightening it while she fiddled.
She stole a glance at Joel, who was looking at her with a small frown on his face. He reached over, taking her wrist without a word to fix the charm himself. His touch on her skin lit a fire that she had to put out immediately. She couldn’t keep looking at him; refused to. The look in his eyes reminded her of the one he gave when she left.
And she couldn’t fall for it again.
“I gotta get home,” she announced, hopping off her barstool. “My dad is waiting for me; promised I’d stay with him while I was in town.”
Joel nodded once, looking away from her finally. “Don’t be a stranger; Sarah’s soccer season ended so she’s home in the evenings. Doubt she remembers ya, but I’m sure you remember her.”
It was a subtle dig; a reminder that she had left and tried her damnedest not to come back. But she wouldn’t let him see how it bothered her, giving him a polite smile.
“I’ll try to stop by.”
Both of them knew she wouldn’t though.
2003 —Somewhere in east Texas
One month after the outbreak
“You sure that’s the address?” Joel asked, looking up at a building.
Just like most places, it seemed abandoned aside from a handful of looters trying to get whatever they could. One of the many luxury apartments of Houston, left to the elements and whatever else found its way into the building.
Tommy held out a worn out piece of paper to him, the ink faded from being folded over so many times. Joel took it, looked it over a few times, before he cast his gaze up.
“We gotta get to the eighth floor then.”
“Leave it to her to live on the fuckin’ top floor,” Joel grumbled, shaking his head.
“If she’s even there,” Tommy reminded him, looking up at the building.
He glanced at his brother, frowning deeply as Tommy fell prey to the thought that she was dead. Tommy was the one to assume the best; to assume she was alive.
Joel assumed she wasn’t.
It was easier to assume the worst than hope for the best.
Trekking up eight flights of stairs was living hell, given that at any moment someone —something could attack. Guns drawn, backing up stairs to cover each other…it was something that the two had grown used to doing over the last month. But silence enveloped the building, and by the time they made it to the top floor unscathed, things seemed…fine.
“Apartment 818E,” Tommy reminded him, motioning for him to follow down the hall.
Joel had an uneasy feeling as he peered into open apartments, checking for threats. It seemed that looters hadn’t made it up eight flights of stairs, leaving many of the apartments alone. But it was too quiet; too easy. Nothing in this new hell was easy.
Tommy stopped, standing in front of a closed apartment door. The numbers were eschew, like someone tried prying them off. But the door was unlocked when he reached for it, gun drawn. Joel followed close behind as they pushed open the door. And it was like walking into a memory.
Everything was covered in a thin layer of dust, but it was clearly still her home. Pictures on the walls, books stacked on the coffee table. Dishes were still in the sink, and the upturned faucet suggested that the water had been running when she left. Joel stepped through the living room, glancing over the photos that littered the space.
But he stopped in front of one —staring at him through dust and cobwebs. It was a photo of him and Sarah, right after Sarah’s first birthday, not long after his ex left. He remembered that day; she had insisted on taking a new family photo because fuck her, who needs her? And when Joel tried to argue that Sarah needed her mother —she reminded him that Sarah had her, and did he.
There was a photo next to it, one he didn’t remember taking. Tommy had his arm around her shoulders, and Joel had his around her waist. The photo was snapped as she looked up at Joel —like she was caught staring at him instead of smiling at the camera. It was right before Tommy had left for basic, at his going away party. She looked up at him like she was seeing the stars for the first time.
And Joel wondered, briefly, how he had been so fucking stupid not to notice.
He lifted the photo off the wall, wiping away the grime. There was a hole in his heart where Sarah was missing; and now another hole where she was too. He glanced at the photo of him and Sarah, taking it down next. Tommy was still searching the house, but Joel was prying the backs of the frames off and taking the photos out. He couldn’t leave them behind.
“Find anything?” He asked, taking a breath to calm himself down. Feelings didn’t mean shit at the end of the world, anyway.
When Tommy didn’t answer, Joel pushed the photos into his back pocket and returned to searching. He found Tommy standing in her bedroom, staring at the floor. Joel’s gaze followed, and even though he had assumed the worst —seeing the blood stains on the carpet twisted everything inside him until it ached.
“Maybe it’s not hers,” Tommy mumbled, kneeling down to look the stain over. Joel was about to argue, but Tommy’s voice cracked as he spoke again. “She was always fighting, she probably got away —,”
“Tommy,” Joel scolded gently, kneeling beside his brother. “Tommy, we need to go.”
But Tommy just shook his head, staring blankly at the blood stain. Joel huffed in frustration, pushing himself off the floor. He’d give his brother a few minutes; let him accept that she was really gone. It was easier that way —Joel had accepted she was dead weeks ago.
He took a moment, looking around her bedroom. It was a mess; like she was in the middle of cleaning up when everything went wrong. Clothes were hanging from her drawers and her curtains were drawn. The bed wasn’t made, with the covers practically pushed onto the floor. The pictures on her nightstand were knocked over from the blankets being thrown, and Joel moved over to set them back up.
Sitting on the nightstand was a worn, silver star. The jump ring was twisted open, and the star itself had a copper tint from being worn down over years. Joel hesitated just a moment before picking it up, looking it over. He’d tried to fix it last month, but she wouldn’t let him get too close. And now, he held the charm in the palm of his hand, throat closing up.
“Tommy, we need to go,” Joel finally decided, trying to keep himself together. “We gotta get moving. She’s gone.”
Reluctantly, his brother stood and rubbed a hand over his face. Then, after composing himself, he and Tommy left what was left of their old life behind.
Joel, however, pocketed the charm.
2023 —Present Day
Somewhere near the border of Wyoming
“Why couldn't the skeleton share the bad news?” Ellie asked, kicking her feet out in front of her.
Joel rubbed his face, groaning as she giggled to herself, holding the joke book. “God, why?”
“Because he didn’t have the heart!”
He hunched over, closer to the fire, giving her an unamused look as he shook his head. “Fuckin’ terrible, kid.”
“You’re just not funny.”
As Joel was about to argue, a gunshot rang out in the distance. Both of them went silent, with Joel smothering the campfire and him pushing Ellie behind rocks that they had taken refuge in for the evening. Joel stayed low, pulling out his own pistol. He glanced back at Ellie, who was peering out from behind the rocks, clutching her pocket knife.
“Stay here,” Joel ordered, giving the girl a hard look.
“But —,”
“No,” he interrupted, pointing at her. “Stay. Here.”
Ellie huffed in anger, but fell against the rock. Joel took a breath, shaking his head for a moment before he began making his way towards the gunshot. Another rang out —then another. The shots were getting closer —too close, and he was readying himself for a fight as he inched closer to the woods.
The sound of snowing and ice crunching under boots was loud enough that it pierced the silence of the night like a knife. Someone was being chased, and Joel feared the worst. There were too many possibilities of what could be running towards him, and he wasn’t about to take any chances as he pushed up against a tree, pistol at the ready.
Another shot rang out, and a high pitch scream came next.
“Son of a bitch.”
Joel blinked, that overwhelming pain in his chest suddenly taking over as he listened. The voice was painfully familiar —older, hoarse, but familiar. He peered around the base of the tree, catching just a glimpse of a woman, holding her shoulder as it bleed into her hands. Her gun lay on the ground beside her.
But it was her.
Twenty years —twenty goddamn years, and there she stood in front of him. Covered in blood —fresh and old —and being shot at in the wilderness of Wyoming. Older too; but they both were. Her lip was busted, bruised and bleeding. But it was her.
He wondered if she had looked for him and Tommy, like they had for her.
“You can’t run,” a voice called from further away. Joel, unable to catch his breath, leaned back against the tree.
“Thought that was the fucking point,” she snapped back, reaching down to snatch her gun back up, pointing it hastily into the woods. Joel couldn’t see where she was aiming. “I thought you were hunting me —prey runs, you dipshit.”
“Didn’t think you’d run so damn far.”
The other voice, distinctly male, emerged a few feet away from where Joel hid. He peered around one more time, making sure that it was just her and him. Her gun turned to her attacker, bad arm tucked into her side as she practically bared her teeth in a growl.
“One more step,” she warned, hand trembling as she held the gun. “And I’ll shoot you.”
“You can barely aim with your good arm, what makes you think you’ll hit me now?”
“Fuck you,” she spat.
“I gave you that option.”
“And yet I still chose being hunted over your dick.”
Joel had heard enough, turning from behind the tree and taking aim. There was no pause; he did not hesitate. He just pulled the trigger and watched her assailant drop like the fly he was. He didn’t stop, though, emptying his clip until the man was a bloody, unrecognizable mess. Even with it emptied, he pulled the trigger several more times as he saw red.
She had whipped around, gun pointed at Joel now. Her movements were sluggish, and she was wincing from the wound in her arm. But he put his hands up, finger off the trigger. Her eyes widened as her hand shook, dropping her gun in the snow. It was littered in blood stains, and Joel thought back to that day they had found her apartment empty.
“Joel?”
Hearing her say his name —after twenty years —felt surreal. Almost like he was hallucinating. How many nightmares and dreams did he have about her? Begging her to stay, trying to find her only to watch her disappear again? He’d forgotten the sound of her voice, how sweet it was —even now, broken and older. But hearing his name from her lips took him back and suddenly he was in the house again, laughing in the backyard with Sarah and her.
He lowered his hands, slipping the pistol into his holster. She stared at him with wide eyes, as if she was seeing a ghost. Joel hesitated, but took half a step forward. She took a step back, breathing heavily as she watched him. It was like she was a feral animal, afraid to let him near.
“Joel!”
He turned at the sound of Ellie’s voice, who was running up on him. When he turned back around, she was taking off back into the woods, clutching her arm and holding her gun.
“Where the hell are you going?” Joel called after her, and she briefly paused —glanced over her shoulder at him —then kept going.
For a moment, Joel considered going after her. How could she just take off like that? But Ellie sidled up to his side, grabbing the sleeve of his jacket as she watched the woman walk away through the snow. Then he decided he couldn’t.
“You know her?” Ellie asked, brow furrowed.
“I…yeah,” was all Joel could muster up saying. “Yeah, I do.”
*****
The remainder of their trip to Jackson was filled with questions from Ellie about the woman in the woods. Who is she? Why didn’t we go after her? Was that your girlfriend? Oh my fucking god it was.
By the time they had called it for the night the first day after seeing her, Joel had given the bare minimum he could to answer Ellie. Admitting anything more would just trudge up memories he didn’t want to relive, and make it harder to not go after her. She clearly didn’t want their help, and he knew well enough that meant she’d fight them tooth and nail to avoid it. It’s what he would have done too. It wasn’t worth the risk to Ellie. Not when they were so close to getting her to Tommy and to safety.
After two weeks worth of walking and finally arriving in Jackson, Joel had tried to forget he had even seen her. There was no reason to tell Tommy; no reason to give him any hope that he had seen their old friend. Tommy had enough going on —with Maria being pregnant, there wasn’t a good excuse to bring it up anyway.
Following dinner —where they enjoyed a meal that wasn’t expired, and Joel thanked God for that —Tommy offered to show them down to the stables. Ellie was overjoyed, ready to interact with any and all animals she could. Joel just followed along as Maria explained the different posts that Ellie could help with if they stayed, all working with the different animals the community raised. Joel and Tommy fell back some, though Joel kept his eyes on Ellie.
“You know, I wanted to wait to tell you,” Tommy started, slipping his hands in his pockets as they both watched Ellie pet the horse in front of her. “But about a week ago, someone showed up at the gate —I don’t think you’ll believe me —,”
But Joel interrupted, whispering her name, before looking at Tommy. The younger man looked surprised that Joel knew.
“How did you —,”
“We ran into her a few weeks ago,” Joel explained, crossing his arms over his chest. “She was…shit, I don’t know. Being hunted. I killed the guy, but she took off.”
“Explains the shitty stitch job she had when she got here.”
Joel just nodded, trying not to think about her stitching herself up in the middle of the woods, alone. Though he had tried hard not to think about the other things she had experienced, alone, over the last two decades.
“She spent a couple nights in quarantine but we got’er set up in one of the apartments in the center. I’ve been checkin’ on her, but she hasn’t said much; didn’t even mention seeing you.”
Joel just shrugged, watching Ellie still. But he decided it was for the best to change the subject; for now anyway. “I need your help, Tommy.”
*****
When she had arrived in Jackson, she was certain that she was going to die at the gate. Her shoulder was infected —not from a bite, but from lack of taking care of it. She had stitched herself together with a dirty needle and thread she had tucked away in an abandoned cabin not far from where Ryan —her attacker —had died. Her supplies were still there when she returned, and she thanked the universe for not fucking her over even more.
With Ryan and his brothers gone, she was finally free from the nightmare she had been living in. Even if it meant dying at the gates of the community she’d only heard stories about…she died free.
But when the gate opened and she dropped to her knees in front of the masked guards, she heard her name being yelled. Frantic, shocked, terrified. But goddamn, she knew that voice.
“Tommy,” she breathed as he froze in front of her. She was covered in blood, worse for wear, and she knew what he was thinking. “I-I’m not infected, I swear, I was shot —,”
“We’re gonna get you to the clinic, okay?” He promised, motioning for the guards to help her up. A dog approached her, sniffing her over for several minutes, before returning to Tommy’s side. “See? Not infected; the dogs can tell.”
He ended up lifting her into his arms and carrying her through the gates. It felt like every part of her was just getting heavy, and her eyes wouldn’t focus on anything around her. But she was with Tommy; she was with someone she knew. And he was safe, and he was there. And when she woke up —if she woke up —she’d tell him she was saved by who she thought was Joel.
“I gotcha,” he promised, “You just gotta stay awake for me. Can you do that?”
She hummed in response, but her eyelids were too heavy and soon, the world had turned to black.
*****
When she woke, Tommy was sitting next to her bed with another woman. They didn’t notice her staring at them through half closed eyes, taking a moment to consider if she was dead and this was heaven. But then, she moved just enough and she gasped in pain. Her shoulder stung, her head ached, and Christ, she was thirsty.
“Hey, hey, don’t move,” Tommy ordered softly, pushing her good shoulder down into the pillows. “You’re just fine; you’re safe.”
She stared at him for a long time, reaching out to touch his face. Twenty years was such a long time, and he had changed so much. Everyone changed, of course. The world was nothing like it was when they were kids, but he was still Tommy Miller; still her friend and the boy next door. And as he touched her hand, she started crying.
*****
After a week in the clinic, Tommy set her up with a small apartment in the center of the community. He tried apologizing for how small it was, but she waved him off, insisting that it was far better than anything she’d experienced in years. When he tried to push for more, she told him she wanted to settle in and that she would tell him more later.
He left it at that, and left her alone.
It was a small space, but it was her space. She had a bed, a bathroom, and a kitchen. And for a very short moment, she thought it was some semblance of normal. But when she got into the shower —washed out the grease and grime and remaining blood from her fight —and watched that faded crimson circle the drain…well, it wasn’t normal. It never would be.
And when she stepped out, feeling cleaner than she had in nearly two decades, she finally saw her reflection. Her lips were bruised and split, with a scar across her cheek to her ear. Bruises littered her skin, enough so that her entire chest and shoulder were completely discolored. The bags under her eyes —not from being hit, shockingly, but from pure exhaustion —made her look sick. Though god forbid, she was incredibly malnourished as it was.
Maria —Tommy’s wife, she had explained —came by with containers of food. She explained she and Tommy led the community, and that usually people ate the mess hall. But of course, no one expected her to right away. She wanted to joke, to tell Maria that she seemed too good for Tommy. But she stopped herself, because how would she know that? The Tommy she knew before the outbreak and the Tommy Maria knew were two completely different people.
By the end of her first week, she was finally finding herself trying to explore Jackson. Tommy had offered to give her a tour, but she told him to go help Maria with whatever she was doing. He had hesitated, but eventually left her to her own devices.
The remainder of her day was spent alone, wandering through the community. People greeted her, and she offered them soft smiles in response, but didn’t linger long enough to talk more. Exploring and socializing were two very different things, and she wasn’t ready for the socialization part of being there yet.
So she wandered the perimeter, counting her steps as she memorized each entry point. Nodded to the guards and thanked them. Then she made her way back around the other way. It’s what she had done in the Dallas QZ; memorized every weak point that she could sneak out of. It was the only thing that kept her sane for the first few years, before she finally managed to get the hell out.
Two twenty-three, two twenty-four, two twenty-five, two —
Her name was called, disrupting her counting, and she froze mid-step. Her name was yelled again, and that same familiar drawl that she had heard in the woods —that she thought she heard.
Slowly, she turned.
Twenty steps away stood Joel Miller, watching her.
She hadn’t been seeing things. It wasn’t blood loss or drug induced hallucinations —Joel was really eighteen steps away from her.
Seventeen.
He said her name again, and she took two steps towards him.
Fifteen.
“Joel,” she managed to croak out as she took three more steps.
Ten.
Eight.
Joel took four more; she took four. They met in the middle, and her arms were around his middle before she could stop herself. His snaked around her shoulders, pulling her into him without another word and she gasped as she started crying into his jacket. Joel pressed his lips to her hair, and she sobbed harder, clinging to him.
“It’s okay,” he promised, holding her close to him. “It’s alright, darlin’. Don’t you cry; it’s okay.”
How many nights did she dream of him calling her that again? Even after she accepted he didn’t want her, that he let her leave —she dreamed of it for years, wishing she could see him one more time. Apologize for leaving, and tell him she missed him. Tell him how she wished she had asked him to come with her, to bring Sarah and they could be a family together properly.
It was too late for that; too late to apologize. To have a family, and a life like what they had before. But he was there, and he was real.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, voice muffled by his jacket. “I’m sorry, Joel.”
He hushed her, promising her again that everything was going to be okay. “C’mon —sun’s setting. Let’s get inside before it’s dark.”
She nodded, letting him pull away. But his touch didn’t disappear, instead turning into him wrapping his arm around her shoulders to lead her back into town. Nobody said a word to them as she sobbed into her hands, letting Joel guide her wherever they were going.
She would have let him guide her to hell if it meant being close again though.
*****
They didn’t actually say anything to one another for a long time. Joel had brought her to the hole in the wall Tommy had given him and Ellie to stay, and when they sat down —she just cried. He didn’t know how to console her, or calm her down. So instead he simply let her cry, and held her while she did so. As Joel held her, he could feel her body shake with sobs. He could tell that she was struggling with something deep and personal, and he didn't want to intrude on her emotions by prying or trying to speak too soon. So he just held her tightly and waited for her to open up when she was ready.
Ellie had come out of her room at the intrusion, no doubt about to make a snarky comment, but Joel gave her a pointed look. It was a warning, and Ellie backed away as soon as the woman let out another broken sob.
But as her crying slowly subsided, and her tears stopped streaking down her cheeks, she pulled away from him. Joel leaned forward on the sofa, clasping his hands together as she fell against cushions. He wondered how long she’d kept herself from crying; how long she buried all those feelings.
“Feel better?” He asked, leaning back now to properly look at her.
She just nodded, rubbing her eyes with the heels of her palms. “I’m sorry —Christ, I’m pathetic —,”
“None of that,” he scolded, but he tried to keep his voice soft.
Ellie peered around the corner, and before Joel could say anything, she followed his gaze to the child. Her brow furrowed, staring at Ellie like she was trying to pick her apart.
“That’s not…,” she trailed off, looking back at Joel in confusion. “Did you…Did I miss you having another kid?”
Ellie suddenly snorted, laughing at her question as she finally joined the two in the living room. Joel gave Ellie a careful scowl, frowning deeply as she sat on the floor in front of the two adults. While he never thought he’d have a private moment with her again, he needed Ellie to not interrupt him trying to figure out what was going on.
“I’m not his kid,” Ellie announced, sitting crisscrossed before her now. “I’m his cargo.”
“Don’t say that shit,” he warned, giving Ellie a pointed look. “You’re not –not anymore.”
“But…she was?” She asked, looking between the two curiously.
“Long story,” was all Joel could manage to say, running a hand through his hair. “I’ll…explain it later.”
She looked between Ellie and Joel for a moment, trying to draw connections between the two before she seemed to give up. Her hands rubbed her eyes again, taking a deep breath as she settled into the couch further. Joel simply stared at her, watching her movements. Her fingers tapped against her thigh, a pattern that he was certain she didn’t realize she was making. Her mouth was bruised, with a split lip that was still healing.
“Why’d you run from us?” Ellie suddenly demanded, leaning forward.
“Ellie –,”
But she let out a huff that sounded like a laugh, and Joel turned his attention to her instead of the kid in front of them. He wanted to know too; wanted to understand why she took off when she clearly knew it was him. She’d said his name, after all. But Ellie was too blunt for her own good.
“I…,” she trailed off, trying to think of her explanation. “Do you want the actual answer, or the less terrible one?”
Joel and Ellie glanced at one another, both frowning now. It was Joel who spoke. “The real answer. Please.”
She nodded once, looking down at her hands for a moment. “I thought I was hallucinating, that’s all. Twenty years –what are the odds of you being in the same stretch of woods as me, twenty years after the last time we saw each other?”
“Fucking slim,” Ellie mumbled, looking between the two.
She gave Ellie a surprised look, as if not expecting her to curse. But she shook her head, returning to her story. “I…I’d lost a lot of blood, I think. And I was drugged. Been running for days without eating or sleeping, so I…I saw you, and I really did think it was you. But then…well, she…” She motioned to Ellie then to Joel, frowning still. “I thought, ‘That’s not Sarah; that’s not Sarah so that can’t be Joel,’ and I…figured I was just hallucinating from the drugs and lack of sleep. It wouldn’t have been the first time, honestly. But then…I took off before I could think straight.”
Joel stared at her for a long time, taking her explanation for what it was. In a fucked up way, he liked the thought that she had been seeing him in her delirious state. Maybe it was wrong; maybe it was the worst thing to think of. But she thought of him, and he wondered if that meant what he thought it did.
“How’d you end up in the woods?” He asked, eyes roaming over the scars that she had picked up over the years. “Sounded like you knew the fucker that attacked you.”
“That’s…a whole different story,” she sighed then glanced at Ellie. “One I don’t think I can share with a kid.”
“Bullshit,” Ellie complained, throwing her hands in the air. “I’ve seen and heard so much worse –,”
“Ellie, please,” Joel scolded, pointing to the bedroom. “I need you to go find something else to do.”
“What the hell am I gonna do?”
“Literally anything. Go.” Joel's voice was stern, and he knew that Ellie was feeling frustrated not being involved. "Ellie, I mean it. Anything else. Just keep yourself busy and stay safe," Joel said firmly.
Ellie rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "Fine," she grumbled, turning to head to the bedroom.
As she disappeared from view, Joel let out a sigh of relief. He didn't want to hurt Ellie's feelings, but sometimes she was too stubborn for her good, and while he didn’t expect too long a moment alone with her, he wanted her to feel safe telling him what happened to her. And if that meant having Ellie go occupy herself for ten minutes, then he would make it up to her later.
She watched Ellie walk away, waiting to speak until she heard the slam of the bedroom door. She flinched at the sound, closing her eyes for a moment.
“I’m sorry, she can stay out here –,”
Joel shook his head, waving off her concerns. “She’ll be fine,” he promised, moving now to sit closer to her. “Sometimes she thinks she’s more grown than she is.”
“I think all teenagers think that way.”
He thought back to Sarah for a moment; how she insisted on doing things on her own only to realize she needed help when it was too late. It was a teenager thing to do, even in the middle of the apocalypse. The thought of Sarah hurt though, and he shook his head to bring him back. He knew that dwelling on the past wouldn't do any good, especially now that he had part of his past sitting in front of him.
“Talk to me,” he ordered, keeping that same stern but soft tone he gave her earlier. It was easier to move forward; keep the conversation going. Even if it meant talking about her past over his. “What happened?”
She bit at her lip, though stopped herself when she remembered the split and the bruise. Instead she opted to pick at the skin around her nails, trying to keep herself occupied. Joel waited patiently, frowning as time wore on. He could sense her unease and wanted to help, but he also knew better than to push her. He shifted his weight on the couch, leaning forward some, feeling the weight of the silence between them.
“Where do I even start?” She finally asked, covering her face with her hands.
“Why not the beginning?” He suggested, reaching out to take her hand. “Tell me what happened, darlin’.”
She hesitated again, looking at their hands. His were a scarred, calloused disaster. Worn and torn from years of violence and labor. Even before the world had gone to shit, they were worked hard from construction. Joel couldn't help but notice the way she hesitated, her eyes darting back and forth between their hands.
Suddenly, he was overwhelmed with the memory of the last time they touched like this. It was the morning before she kicked him out of her house. She’d stayed the night, having watched Sarah for him while he had gone out to help a friend get their car back and running. It wasn’t the first night they’d spent together, with her waking up in his bed and his lips on hers, lazy in the sunrise. She’d taken his hand, pressing their finger tips together, and asked him if he wanted to talk about her offer to Boeing.
He didn’t want to talk about it then, promising they could later. He remembered her sighing, burying her face back into her pillow even though she still held his hand in hers. He had been avoiding the conversation for weeks at that point —knew he was pushing his luck in her staying with him without talking about it. They hadn’t talked about what had been going on between them; hadn’t put a label to it. She was young and had a life ahead of her. And Joel…well, he was the father of a four year old and too jaded from his ex to put his heart on the line again. He had been afraid to tell her the truth, and by the time she tried to force it out of him, it was too late.
Christ. Had it really been thirty years?
“Joel?”
Her voice broke him from his thoughts, and he focused on her face again. “Sorry, darlin’. I’m listening, promise.”
She nodded again, taking a moment before she finally started to speak. Her free hand ran over her hair as she put into words the last twenty years.
“Uh, so most of the last two decades were in the Dallas QZ,” she explained, “I stopped keeping track around fifteen. Most of my team from the Space Center ended up with me there, and FEDRA had us work on putting the zone together. Guess they thought all engineers were builders –but we basically directed people on how to make shuttles and parts of the shuttle; buildings are completely different.”
“I still can’t believe you were an engineer for NASA,” he admitted, smiling softly at her. “Makes sense since you were always takin’ shit apart and putting it back together, just to see how it worked.”
“I never thought it was an option, but that’s how I managed to get a radio that worked right; I managed to jerry rig something that could pick up on the towers communicating back and forth.” She just shrugged though, looking back down at her hands. “That’s how I found out about this place. Overheard someone passing along the message, and I started to map it out the best I could. I have a shit sense of direction, though.”
“You always did,” he recalled, giving her another small grin. “Remember when you convinced me to drive you and Tommy to Galveston for some concert and you got us lost?”
She smiled, and Joel was certain she was thinking back on it. He remembered that trip well; she’d just turned eighteen, and Tommy was about to head out to basic. They wanted to do something exciting before he left, having asked her parents to watch Sarah for the weekend. Halfway through the trip, she offered to help with Sarah; she hadn’t mentioned getting an offer to go to school in Seattle at that point. He was just happy to have someone who wanted to be there.
He remembered how packed the cab of the truck was, and how she was practically in his lap the entire trip there. At the time, it was like he was suddenly seeing her for more than the girl who hung out with his little brother. She was lively, and excited. Her laughter filled the cab, and he couldn't help but feel drawn to her energy. He wanted to spend more time with her, to hear her laugh and chat his ear off. Even when he realized they were lost as shit, it didn’t matter because he was just content with her beside him. Until Tommy reminded them they missed the concert, of course.
“We ended up there eventually!”
“After the fucking concert was over, a day late.”
“We still got there,” she argued, and Joel appreciated that the memory got her to smile just a little. But it faded as she continued to speak. “I told my team, and we were gonna get out of there. After a while though, it's like…like my team just started to disappear. Couple were killed by FEDRA for breaking rules; two others got sick. Then it was just me and…I figured if I was gonna go, I had to go then or never. Think that was, shit. I don’t know? Three years ago?
“I was fine for a year and half, on my own. Didn’t have a fucking clue where I was going, but I was doing okay. And then…I stumbled on this group of survivors –two women, three men. I offered them some supplies to show I wasn’t there to hurt them, and they told me they were headed here too. So I joined them. That’s…that’s when it got bad.
“Lilla, one of the ladies, got infected and attacked us. She bit one of the men, Travis. Obviously we killed them, and got away. But then, I don’t know, the leader of the group –his name was Ryan, he’s the one that you killed –got this sick idea that hunting people was the best way to survive. His wife agreed, and his brother just went along with it. I thought they were psycho, told them and that’s when…well, they decided it was me they would hunt.”
“What the fuck,” Joel mumbled, brow furrowing as he listened to her. Her hand was trembling now, and he reached out to take both her hands in his now. She closed her eyes, tears falling again as she clutched his hands tight. “Hey, it’s okay. You’re safe now.”
“Long story short, I managed to kill the wife and brother about six months into their stupid ass game; Ryan just kept…he kept finding me. Every time I got away, he showed up. He’d get close enough, get a hold of me –drug me, stab me, whatever he could to slow me down –then let me go again. When you found me…that was, I don’t know, I think the third or fourth time he’d caught me and threw me back out. Like I was some game piece. Then…then you killed him and suddenly, I was free again but I thought I was dying, and…and…”
Finally, he pulled her into his arms, holding her close to him as she started to cry again. Joel’s stomach churned, the thought of her being hunted for nearly two years. He couldn't imagine what she must have gone through, the fear and uncertainty that must have plagued her every waking moment. He had always known that she was strong, but now he realized just how resilient she truly was. Despite the being fucking hunted, she had never given up. He felt a deep sense of respect and admiration for her, and he knew that he would do anything to make sure that she felt safe again. He’d failed her once before; he wouldn’t do so again.
As she cried in his arms, he whispered words of comfort to her, promising her that he would always be there for her. He knew that it would take time for her to heal, to overcome the trauma she had experienced, but he was healing too; he was just as broken as she was. And he wanted to heal with her –with Ellie too. In that moment, as he held her close, he realized he had to keep both her and Ellie safe; that he couldn’t fail them both.
He also realized, then, that he had to continue with Ellie to the university.
Joel pulled back, just enough to take her face in his hands. Tears were in her eyes as she looked up at him, and he couldn’t hold his back anymore. There was hesitation; a fear that lingered before he leaned in and pressed his lips against hers, feeling the weight of all the emotions between them. It was a kiss born out of sadness; trauma. But also one of comfort and understanding. It took a moment for her to respond to the kiss, but when she did, she returned with a fierceness that surprised them both. Their lips molded together, and their bodies pressed closer as the intensity of their emotions heightened. They both needed this connection, this moment of shared vulnerability, to ease the pain of their past.
They stayed that way for a long moment, lost in each other, before finally pulling away, breathless. Joel rested his forehead against hers, his eyes closed, feeling grateful for the connection they shared. As they finally broke apart, gasping for air, she looked up at him with tears still in her eyes. But they were different tears now, ones of relief and hope.
“I have to leave,” he whispered, searching her eyes as he pulled back, taking her face in his hands. “I have to take Ellie to Colorado –there’s doctors there; she’s immune somehow. They…they think they can make a cure.”
Her brow furrowed as she processed what he was saying, trying to understand what he was trying to get at. Her hand fingers wrapped around his wrists, holding him in place. Her eyes dropped, just briefly, on the string around his wrist –to the charm he’d taken years ago. Her tears fell even harder as she realized what it was. “Joel, I-I don’t –,”
“Come with us,” he practically begged, his voice breaking as he did. “I…I can’t lose you again. I won’t. Come with us, and help me get her there. Then we can come back here when the doctors get what they need, and you and I…we can try again; make up for the time we lost.”
She nodded frantically, tears falling over his hands as she started to cry again. He wiped her tears away, pulling her close to rest his forehead against hers once more.
“Yes!” Ellie suddenly exclaimed, running into the room again.
Joel pulled back, though her hands found his to keep him close. “Ellie –,”
“I knew you wouldn’t let go with Tommy!” Ellie continued, throwing her arms around Joel’s neck from behind. “You fucking softie, I knew it!”
One of Joel’s hands reached up, patting Ellie’s arm with a small chuckle. She looked between the two for a moment, a soft smile coming to her lips. Joel looked back at her, unable to help the smile that came to him either.
Maybe they’d be okay after all.

I know I've said this before, but I keep thinking how differently the Loki series could've gone had he gotten a creative team that genuinely cared
Bc when I look at the other Marvel projects centering marginalized identities, they get a team that cares. Echo, Shang-Chi, Black Panther, even to an extent Agatha All Along-- all of these creators wanted to tell the stories of the mc, and they made sure to do their research and pay their respects to each of the cultures depicted
But at no point throughout the process was it ever hinted at that anyone other than Tom Hiddleston wanted to tell a story about Loki
And I, and many others have said so much on the specific's of Loki's character, and that is in no doubt incredibly important, but I want to talk about something that tends to go overlooked, and that is the queer aspects
I mentioned above that when it comes to MOST projects centering minorities, whether it is regarding ethnicity, queerness, or anything else, the creators usually do their research. Echo featured several Native American writers, and they consulted with several tribes to ensure that what they were depicting was accurate and positive. They asked Deaf and hard-of-hearing people as well, and all of this is obvious when you watch the show. I saw none of that with the Loki series
Nowhere was it hinted at did Waldron, Herron, and Wright work with queer organizations. While Herron did hire a fair amount of female writers, it doesn't look like many of them returned for season 2, and no evidence suggests that the people leading the show did their research on the LGBTQ+ community
And you know what? Maybe I would be okay with this had they not plastered "Loki is genderfluid and bisexual!!!" on every piece of marketing. So many times the creators gave interviews on how much they cared, about how it was so important to them to showcase Loki's identity, and when the show came out, we saw the evidence of that
Nothing. Literally nothing. Fine, you can put your "sex: fluid" on the file and have Loki say that he likes men and women, go ahead and do that, but don't tout it around. Don't trick us into thinking that you did so much research for less than two seconds of screentime
It's even more annoying when you look at the comments made by Kevin Wright (executive producer) last year on Lokius. This isn't a Lokius-centered post, but it is important to acknowledge that the ship played a very large role in the queerbaiting for season 2:
"...But also, we can't get into Loki's head and Loki as a character is bisexual and gender fluid, and I don't know. But it wasn't something that we were ever exploring, I would say."
???
You are one of the producers on this show, you literally help decide what goes on in Loki's head. And if you, a cishet man, is having trouble figuring that out, then, oh, I don't know, hire someone who is??
I'm quite sure that if you reached out, queer agencies would've been more than happy to help you out on that bit. Hire a bi person who knows how Loki could feel. Hire a genderfluid/trans person to look over your scripts to make sure they're not offensive
You cannot go ahead and claim that you cared so much about Loki's queer identity, doing nothing to pursue that, actually going backwards and putting in negative stereotypes, then coming full circle with, "actually, we don't know what Loki thinks bc we're not gf and bi"
My god, if this series could stop being so contradicting-

Warnings: um smut... wrap it before you tap it, piv, fem!reader, academical rivals to lovers, probably the filthiest thing I have ever written... if you know me, no you don't
Tumblr media
Part 1 , Part 3
Things since last week haven't changed much. Remus and I still had our rivalry going stronger than ever. Especially after the hallway incident, which ended up with him having a large red handprint on his cheek, indicating a really strong slap. In my defense, he was getting close. Ever since we haven't stopped arguing with each other, until…
"I can't work with her."
"It's impossible to work with him."
As quickly as the words left our mouths, we sharply turned to glare at each other. Completely missing Professor's McGonagall proud look.
"You are working together on this project. And you will present to me the best project in the class because you are both Perfects and have to give the right example. I don't care about whether you like each other or not."
Seething I exit the room with a newfound speed, and Remus closely follows behind my heels.
"Can you just slow down a bit?" He asks, and I instantly stop walking, turning towards him, waiting impatiently to hear what he has to say. "She's right, you know. We have to make this fucking project as perfect as possible. So I think we should call a truce." He slowly proposes as if this will simply fix our problems. I stare at him blankly, and I see his nostrils flaring. "Look. I don't like this either, ok? But I need the grade, and if it were someone else, I would just make the project myself. But since it's you … if we work together we could… We are at the top of every class for a reason. Just…." His voice eventually gives up.
"Fine," I say, "meet me at the library at 7. We have a lot of research to do"
This was how I found myself meeting with my all-time rival every day in the library for two months. The insults never stopped flying from one to the other, but surprisingly, we made a good team, and the project was almost finished. We are now accustomed to each other and our habits. Like Remus… when he read something for a really long time, he would remove his glasses and rub his eyes and his nose, smoothing it out after being scrunched up. Or when we got tired, he would share his chocolates to boost our morals and energies.
Many comments have been floating around the halls."How long until they fuck it out?", "God, he could eat her alive, for what she said to him.","He must be really smitten with her for putting up with her." ... Well, you got the gist of it.
Now, as I was getting ready for bed, a thought occurred. We never looked in the secluded area for any useful information. So, I put on my slippers and headed towards the library once again.
I slowly walk down the hallways, trying to get past Flinch. The great mahogany walls of the library greet me with a loud groan. I grab one of the oil lanterns that rest on the librarian's desk and head towards the restricted section. I find books related to the project and start reading them. Keeping notes under the candlelit room.
I could be reading for hours or mere minutes when I hear footsteps. I quickly blow out the flame and hide in the darkest spot I can find between the bookcases. As the sound of footsteps comes closer my breathing turns faster and more panicky. Good God I am going to get caught? Am I going to get detention? What am I going to do?
That's when I feel a hand close around my mouth. Silencing me. Wait …what? Silencing me? A familiar scent fills my nostrils.
"Stay quiet or else we are going to get caught." He whispers in my ear. His Welsh accent dripped like honey, his voice raspy and almost deathly quiet. Heat pools in my core as a dream resurfaces in my brain. "Stay quiet or else we are going to get caught." He says as he pounds into me while he has my hips in a tight grip, guiding back and forth.
As I snap out of my trance, I push his hand harshly off me. "What the hell are you doing here?", I whisper-yell at him.
"What the hell are you doing here?", he fires back. We stare at each other with our eyes slitted as we both breath heavily.
"How did you even know I was here?", I ask him accusingly, even though I have been caught in the act.
"The marauders map." He answers back easily as if that answer would ring a bell and not cause more questions.
"The what ?"
"I think he is gone."
"Oh really?"
"Why do you like to test me, woman?"
"Possibly because of your super nice personality or better yet because you're a prick."
He just returned the favor with a wolfish grin, notice the irony.
"Why are you smiling?" I snap at him.
"Oh because you are so nicely close to me and you haven't uttered a word about that." Just as the words leave his mouth I feel my cheeks heat. Jesus why am I blushing? At least he can't see it. "And yes I can see you blushing"
How did he…? Is he a mind reader?
"Also I am no mind reader, i just know you that well." His face is dangerously close now. The empty, now, library is ominously quiet and I can almost feel our breaths echo in the room. There is no escape, is there? His mouth is almost atop of mine, his breath fanning my face.
"Gosh why are you like this? Why must you test me until I snap? Why do I love it so much?" He says as his lips crush into mine in a bruising kiss that steals my breath away. He manhandles me so that our chests are pressed together and I am promptly sitting in his lap, feeling a long hard cock press against my clad yet soaking wet pussy. Insults fly out of our mouths in-between every heated kiss.
"Punk"
"Jerk"
"Dickhead"
"Oh you are going to feel that soon."
"Bite me, Lupin."
"If you insist."
We discard our clothes as fast as possible until he grabs hold of my thighs and he slams me on the flat surface of the bookcase.
Right opposite the window, it's so dark outside that our reflections fill my eyesight. His scarred, white freckled back in contrast with my tanned legs, due to all the sun exposure, that are wrapped around his waist and my arms in his shoulders. One of my hands is buried deep in his brown curled hair that is now buried in my neck leaving bites and hickeys as he bites, laps and sucks, leaving permanent marks behind his trail. While the other scratches his back, as my legs draw back and my back arches.
Horrified gasps sound in the room, mixing with my moans and his groans. My eyes open immediately, leaving their half hooded state, searching the room for intruders but not finding anyone until…. Of course, the portraits. Great I am about to get royally fucked by Remus Lupin and not only will I have to live with the memory of it but now the portraits saw what we were doing, I was catastrophically doomed, I laugh at the thought.
And Remus leaves his task and draws slightly back, enough for him to keep impossibly close but still be able to see my face.
"I love your laugh. And I absolutely hate the fact that I am not the one causing it. But that is going to change. Everything is going to change from now on, you bellend." The breath is being knocked out of my lungs. "And now I am going to fuck you. I reckon you are wet enough so as not to hurt." He says as his fingers play with my clit. "I would say you are quite drenched actually. You know I have been thinking of this, dreaming it even. Fucking you hard and deep, until you are nothing more that a brainless brat." Gasps and moans are his only answers.
"Thank God you seem to like that because I don't think I can hold back any more." He seals these words with a kiss as he enters me in one fluid motion until he is balls deep. Our mouths are open now as we try to catch our breaths and I stare at his eyes, trying to find the familiar mischievous dark green that haunted my every thought. His forehead dropped to mine as he started to move inside me at an insane pace. His balls are slapping against my clit as he hits all the right spots.
My back arches and my head falls back as my eyes close. I feel one of his hands slide up my back and rest somewhere between my ribs, commanding me to stay in place as I feel…. No this can't be right. My gaze moves to the window and what I see almost brings me right over the edge right there and then. His head is buried in my chest hiding all the toying he is doing at my breasts, paying extra attention to my nipples. Marking them up too.
"God I wish I could mark up our thighs and pussy too but that will have to wait."
"Remus, you prick, how dare you…" I say in a breathless voice my insult is lost in all the pleasure I am feeling.
"Yes, how dare I make you feel all this pleasure. Huh?" He mouths in my chest as he has his lips wrapped around one of my tits.
"I am close" I whimper
"I know, sweetheart. Let go for me. I've gotcha."
I don't know what actually sent me over the edge. The nickname, the command, reassurance, a mixture of all of them? Well whatever it was it rocked my world. I never thought an orgasm could last that long or be so powerful. It was literally dripping down my thighs to his and then falling to the ground. Embarrassingly so. He had finished too. His face was buried in my chest trying to catch our breaths.
He turns to look at me, smirking. Oh no. I already know what he is going to say. And I won't be able to say no.
"Ready for round two?"
words: 1.741
