So do you guys think if the same idea was implemented in canon it could work the other way around? Since Stone still has his watch on after crawling out of the water do you think he could have been alerted of Ivo’s pulse? When it slowed down after Gerald revealed his true plan to Ivo, when it quickened during their fight, or maybe when it fell back to normal when he spoke to stone over the livestream?

And do you think Stone could’ve been notified when it had halted to an immediate stop?

can you share more tips because i just can't seem to write too much, like i hold myself back too much because i tend to think "is this necessary" but the story always ends up being too straightforward and not having details

but as for tips.. I feel like I'm terrible at giving concrete and bullet pointed lists of tips, but I can try to share my thoughts on my writing process!

there are no rights and wrongs when you write, I think it has to do with finding a way that suits you and that allows you to work comfortably. — I personally always want to have a rough idea of who my mcs are before I start writing.

I'm gonna be using the redemption of Choi Yeonjun as an example for this since I feel like most of you guys have read it :3

before I even started writing I knew that I wanted the reader to have certain traits, shy/nerdy/introverted etc.. and I knew that I wanted Yeonjun to be the opposite, extroverted/cocky/mean. — when you know who your mcs are, the writing itself becomes so much easier because you acquaint yourself with your characters in a way!

as for writing itself, once you know your mcs, the scenes will start appearing before you. now I like to write my fics from start to finish, meaning I write everything in the order it gets posted, that's something that works best for me. but a lot of writers just jump straight into whatever scene pops up in their mind, and then connect it to the rest of the story. again, you should write in a way that makes sense for you and makes you feel comfortable!

I think a lot of writers’ main issue on here is that they get self aware of their audience. you might find yourself editing things out because you think that others might not like it, or even as you're writing you water it down because it should appeal to the standard Tumblr keeps. DONT DO THAT.

when you write, write down every single word that pops into your head. it doesn't matter if it looks messy or if its grammatically incorrect, you can always go back and edit later! — but it's important that you allow your ideas and thoughts to flow freely when you write.

you said that you tend to think "is this necessary", my answer to that is, the idea surfaced in your mind for a reason. you wouldn't have thought of this specific line or this specific scene if it wasn't necessary. write it down! and when you read back, if you find that it sounds weird, you can always always change it. nothing in this world is permanent.

as for details, what are even details? I personally think that details might be the subtle traits of the mcs that aren't directly flaunted. things that you have to read between the lines to catch and things that at the time might seem insignificant but in the end ties the entire fic together. — this brings me back to my previous statement about letting your thoughts flow freely! your mind is an incredible place and you will subconsciously add a lot of these details without even noticing them yourself if you allow yourself to feel free when you write!

so I guess my biggest tip is to just forget about everyone else and write what your heart tells you to! don't let your mind shut out your own feelings in favour of the larger masses waiting to read your fics.

believe in yourself and appreciate your beautiful mind. give yourself more credit for your hard work, you totally deserve it!

Do you have any advice for someone who's never had a tattoo before? Anyways to deal with pain, common courtesies for the tattoo artist, how the actual session goes, etc.?

don't stress about it or worry about being 'too much', for someone's first one i will talk through every single thing i'm doing and there are no stupid questions or too many concerns. also don't worry about twitching/flinching, it's not your fault and we know how to work around it

your artist should never make you feel bad about ANYTHING!! you can move the stencil as many times as you want and we don't care about your body or what you look like. if you need to take a break it's fine, if you need numbing spray it's fine. i would honestly rather slightly inconvenience myself than make you uncomfortable. as long as you aren't intentionally wiggling around the entire time or being a dick to the artist, you're all good.

yes it is going to hurt but it probably won't be as bad as you think it will be. when i got my first one i really hyped myself up and was very underwhelmed by the pain aksddfjfdj

bring something with you like a book or headphones if you need a distraction (as long as the tattoo placement allows it). i'm quite chatty most of the time but if you want a quiet session/no smalltalk you can ask for that

the actual session will go something like: show up, look at the design, make any changes if you want, test it out for sizing, put the stencil on and make sure you like it, then start the tattoo. afterwards they'll go through all the aftercare with you and either put on second skin (a film that sticks to your skin and protects the tattoo) or wrap it in clingfilm

if they haven't specified when you book the appointment then ask if it's cash/card/paypal etc and if it's cash, try and get it out BEFORE the tattoo appointment (just a time saving thing). also tipping is never expected but always Extremely appreciated :))

please please PLEASE tell us if you don't like the design/want to change the placement etc. personally i would be mortified if i knew someone didn't like what i'd done and didn't feel comfortable telling me. it's there forever so i want you to like it!!

i dont do a lot of book recs on here (i think ive done one before?) but the Henry Rios books by Michael Nava are so criminally underrated!

They're these mystery novels from the 1980s-1990s about a gay, Latino lawyer (Henry Rios, our protagonist/narrator) solving mysteries--usually while trying to prove his client's innocence. He's a long-suffering idealist written as this kind of hard-boiled detective.

This is actually something the whole series tackles, subverts, and deconstructs in a really interesting way! Instead of being this stoic detective, the archetype gets broken down in a lot of really fascinating and human ways earnestly discussing love, grief, intergenerational trauma, racism, homophobia, illness/disability, toxic masculinity, and substance abuse.

What I love is that these books realize that the hard-boiled detective is stuck in a point of hurt and trauma, and so the Henry Rios series makes a big deal out of fighting tooth and nail to GET BETTER--whatever it takes to improve yourself and your surroundings. While the books maintain a lot of the dark and morose vibe of the original genre (especially given the looming, perpetual grief of AIDS-era queer lit), they always come back to a death match against apathy. It's really moving stuff, especially as the books take this approach to Henry's recovery from alcoholism.

if you're interested in queer history, the books are in touch with queer legal/political history during the HIV/AIDS crisis. The first few books have been rewritten/published as well since Michael Nava's retirement, so I think a comparative reading could be really interesting. For the record, Nava was a civil rights lawyer, so this is all done REALLY well (not to mention the legal drama is engaging, theatrical, petty, gutting, and sometimes hilarious).

if you're interested in detective fiction, they're brilliant deconstructions of the genre. instead of taking the depressed alcoholic white guy with repressed desire for male companionship at face value, the series considers a gay Latino man struggling with machismo, racism and homophobia, intersectional identity, and processing/recovering from grief, childhood trauma, alcoholism, and Catholicism.

Stylistically, the books are smart, poetic, introspective, dark, and witty. There's a lot of suffering, but there are also a lot of intense moments of joy and catharsis that feel really earned.

Also, if you read the rewrites. uh. there's a lot of smut! Happy retirement, Mr. Nava!

Just a little rambling about Scylla and Odysseus

I know that at least a handful of people have probably drawn a few similarities between them already, but that’s just NOT ENOUGH people so I’m just gonna dump some of the thoughts that have marinating in my noggin for a while now.

Does anyone remember when, at the very end of the song “Scylla” both Odysseus and Scylla sing the lyric “We are the same, you and I” in sync (and there a few other lyrics earlier into the song where Scylla sings similar lines on her own)? Becuase I do, and I thought it was WAY too intriguing to disregard. I understand that the scene was meant to mean that both of them would do terrible things to survive, but the being that is expressly said to be in the one place Poseidon wouldn’t roam (from the song “Suffering”), which could mean that he was afraid of Scylla, to actually see some random mortal as the SAME as her has to mean something, right? I know we all got majorly distracted by the the mutiny stuff and then whatever the heck Zeus’s song was (and maybe that was even by design so we wouldn’t look too deeply into the lyric), but it feels like such an important scene!

So I researched into who Scylla actually is, and it turns out Poseidon isn’t exactly afraid of her. She actually used to be a beautiful sea nymph that Poseidon fell in love with, but he asked Amphitrite to turn her into what she is now after after Scylla rejected him. So the reason why Scylla related with Odysseus so strongly was because they are the same. Someone forced to become a monster because of Poseidon’s cruelty, and someone who Poseidon himself would eventually come to avoid (bcus we all now edgy water boy isn’t going anywhere NEAR Odysseus after the beatdown he got in “600 strike”).

((Also, kinda random, but I also just wanna bring up that Odysseus (in the song “King Odysseus”) will be “aiming for the torches” just like Scylla was to the men in Odysseus’s ship! Probably just a coincidence, but it’s an interesting parallel nonetheless.))
