one of the things that continues to strike me on reread is how much the character of Darcy, and Austen through him, finds Mr. Bennet dead. And how much Elizabeth, in growing and changing and discarding her past blindness, has to move past her way of seeing her father and thus of seeing reality, because the two are connected! Darcy’s letter exposes her father’s flaws to Elizabeth in a way she’d never been able to see before. Most especially the way his laziness and neglect of his own gifts have hurt his family and that ultimately he doesn’t. care. Not enough to change. It literally says that she comes home from Hunsford and tries to laugh at her sisters’ and mother’s folly (the way she used to; the way her father has taught her to by example for her whole life) and she can’t anymore! It sticks in her throat. She is grieved by the failures that she sees in him, all the more so because she IS his favorite and she loves him! And the thing about Mr. Bennet is he never changes. The Lydia/wickham situation exposes to him sharply his own conduct and the consequences and he feels it! Because he is neither stupid nor unfeeling. But he, like everyone, has free will. And he chooses not to change when the opportunity presents itself. He even jokes about how quickly his feeling bad will pass and how soon everything will go back to normal, to his laziness and his selfishness. He is set in his ways and he serves as a contrast to Elizabeth’s personal journey because he embodies a version of a person she could have become and was in danger of becoming if her only goal at all times was to laugh at and judge people from the sidelines.

Been thinking a lot about how lesbians have to pretend they never experience any adverse feelings to rejection in order to avoid the "predator" stereotype. When we get rejected by a straight woman or even just get hit with the reality that most women are straight, we're not allowed to be upset or angry or hurt about it.

I am not saying that lesbians should be allowed to verbally abuse a straight woman for saying no, but I don't feel like we're allowed to be angry at all. Even privately. Having those feelings at all makes us 'bad'.

The truth is that it very much so sucks to watch women you love choose men over you. It sucks to know that no matter how attractive and sweet and kind you are, most women will simply not be attracted to you in the slightest and there's nothing you can do about it. It sucks to know that men get to freely love women while you have to hide from bigots. It sucks to have strong, tender feelings for women that they simply do not return.

It's perfectly normal to feel deep sadness and anger over this. I'm talking bubbling violent anger that leaves you feeling like you're a descendant of the Greek goddess Lyssa. Wishing deeply that your feelings for women were returned doesn't make you a predator. Having extremely negative feelings towards the men that catch your crush's attention doesn't make you a bad person. That is all incredibly normal.

Straight men get rejected one too many times and commit mass shootings... You feeling private rage doesn't make you a bad person at all.

I just really hate that it seems like the only appropriate reaction lesbians are allowed to have to heartbreak is demure acceptance.

Every so often I’ll see interpretations of Liara’s N7 armor display as creepy/obsessive behaviour — and that’s a fair interpretation! But it got me thinking about my own interpretation and, well

It kinda makes sense, doesn’t it?

Whether you romance her or not, she still has that armor display. The archaeologist. Displaying the armor of someone Important™️, someone whose most recent importance was downplayed by the Alliance — support for Shepard’s Reaper theory was waning, the Alliance sent them off to more remote spots, Alchera happened…

Liara is first and foremost a student of history, and an Asari one at that. She’s trained to see those patterns of history, and knows a legend when she sees one — beyond whatever else Shepard may have been known for before ME1. And in the aftermath of Alchera, I’m sure she got her first real experience with how humans, and the Alliance in particular, will try to bury or gloss over inconvenient truths — if they can be bothered to acknowledge those truths in the first place

They didn’t memorialize Alchera until Shepard was back, two years later. They didn’t want to keep a spotlight on Shepard, on why they were even out there. But Shepard didn’t stay buried, and, well, maybe other ghosts wouldn’t either

All this to say I personally see Liara’s display as her own way of honoring Shepard as a historical symbol, as someone Historically Important™️, and part of that history is a part the Alliance wanted to forget, was happy to forget until they couldn’t anymore

But Liara wasn’t going to forget, and she’d make sure galactic history broadly wouldn’t, either. And in ME3, she takes that conviction one step further, seeding Shepard’s story, the story of the Reapers, all throughout the galaxy

That just reads as more narratively consistent to me, anyway 🤷‍♂️

Do the GA really think that the Stranger Things endgame ships will really just be the four established main heterosexual ships (Lumax, Jopper, Jancy, and Milkvan) and one sapphic side pairing (Rovickie)? I don't know but it just feels off to me that they wouldn't try to mix up any of the established relationships in S5 and would keep them all the same.

It seems Stranger Things like to establish at least one new prominent couple a season (Season 1 was mostly an introduction to the characters but we had Stancy and a fledgling Milkvan, Season 2 was Lumax and Jancy, Season 3 was Milkvan actually entering a relationship [technically there's Dustin/Suzie but that's very subsidiary], and Season 4 was Jopper and the set-up of Rovickie). Do we really think there'd be no additional ships added in S5?

Also Will is supposed to be the main character of S5 according to the Duffers. Why would any romantic relationship of his be a footnote in his story? Meanwhile we still have the whole painting lie that Finn has said will "pay off" which makes clear a conversation between Mike and Will will happen where Will's feelings for Mike become clear to him for the first time (feelings that Finn says Mike is oblivious to in S4).

Now if they somehow threw Will into a relationship with some rando at the end it would feel very disingenuous that the two queer ships in the show (Rovickie and Will/Rando NPC) would be merely side pairings with only a handful of scenes together. Will is also said to have a love interest next season, yet new no actors have been cast that would fit that role.

Perhaps it's because this love interest is someone currently already on the show? That's right it's our not-so-lovable background character and close friend to the deceased Jason, Chan--

Garashir snippet that will never come to anything but was a part of a story where Julian experienced a sudden resurgence of the telepathic connection the Lethean sets up in Distant Voices years later, as the Lethean is dying, because *something something handwave* Star Trek science moves in mysterious ways indistinguishable from magic etc., and so had to go wade through his own psychological landscape once more in the wake of the war. It’s set no more than a few years after the ‘Now’ parts of ASIT and Julian is done with absolutely everything every step of the way, needless to say.   

“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” Julian said, looking around the abandoned hallways of DS9. “This again?”

“Yeah, it’s me,” the Lethean said, peeking out from one of the doors down the corridor and giving a little wave. “Long time no see.” 

. . . 

“Out in the real world I’m dying, you see,” the Lethean said easily. “Just wanted to see if I could rekindle our telepathic bond and take you down with me as I go. I suppose in some way I always thought of you as the one who got away.”

“How positively romantic,” Julian said, sourly. “Well, quite aside from the factors of the telepathic bond being years old and the physical distance involved this time, there is also the fact that I’m genetically engineered, which is probably what helped me see you off last time without you even glimpsing any of that in my head. Surprise. So no. You are not going to kill me. At worst this is an afternoon’s inconvenience to me.” 

The Lethean nodded somberly. “Yeah, I figured it had to be something like that when it didn’t take the first time around. Well, still worth a shot. You can’t blame a man for trying, in his final hours.”

“Oh, I can, and I do. At least just… stay out of my way this time, if you don't mind.”

(Julian grumpily stomps through the rooms of his psyche one by one until at last he finds:) 

Sloan, staring at him with his dead eyes that still saw him, saw inside him, saw more than Julian had wanted him to and more than anyone else ever had, except, except, maybe —

“Julian,” Garak said quietly behind him. “You don’t have to stay here.” 

“I read your letter,” Julian said, not quite daring to turn around. “You… you think the world of me. I believe that. You’ve told me that, all but that, over and over. But you don’t know about — about this.”

A chuckle somewhere between incredulous and delighted. “Oh? Do you really think that would change my mind?” 

“No. No, not really. But it… it changed me.” 

Footsteps over the floor, stopping a few meters away. Julian swallowed. He kept himself still.

“To be their heroes and their monsters… they ask so much of us, don’t they,” Garak said, with the performative airiness that let Julian know he was serious. “In my experience it’s hard enough, just to try to be a person. I think you deserve the chance to see how you might like it. Why, what is that startled look for, Doctor? You’ve told me that — all but that — over and over. Are you so surprised that I was listening?”

Breath seemed to enter Julian’s lungs only unwillingly, his throat clogged up with what he needed to say. Unable to look away from Sloan’s corpse-pale face, he managed: “He made me… he let me prove once and for all that I am just a monster, after all. Just a different type than everyone thought I was.”

A hand landed on Julian’s shoulder. It seemed grey and gentle in the low light, and cool. “We could start a support club, my dear.”

Hunger finally overtaking fear, force of habit, his better judgement, anything and everything in Julian that knew how to hold back, with all the gravity of a decision reached because  — Julian turned around to meet Garak’s eyes.

if your favorite character in JJK is either Yuuji or Geto, you have got to read this fic. This story understands those two characters like no other.

It's a canon-divergence, time-travel fix-it AU, in which Yuji, post-shibuya, is thrown back to gojo and geto's schooldays (post hidden inventory arc).

the prose in this fic is so polished and the characters are all given a level of maturity that i found so refreshinggggg. all the other characters are also just as fleshed out, from satoru, shoko, to even Yaga. Yuji's reactions pertaining to Gojo are especially touching. And the way he sees Geto is so characteristically kind.

They surround the crater and naturally Satoru gets closer to it than any of them, though he's right behind him. Suguru knows Satoru noticed it, too—something terribly human-shaped, with a soft filthy face and hunched shoulders and scuffed red sneakers.

Also, one of my favorite aspects of the fic is how it describes Yuuji's scent/energy. I know the accepted fanon is that Yuuji smells like peaches, but I've always found the idea of that scent to be a bit too sugarysweet and childish(?) to fit Yuuji.

But this:  Rosewater steam, faint and warm and welcoming, and pooling blood and something herbaceous.

now this is what I'm fucking talking abouttttt. That's how you fucking describe a scent, man! The idea of Yuuji's aura being ~rosewater steam~ is just so much more alluring and tantalizing than peaches, imo. ahhhhhh I'm in loveeee.

i enjoy toxic yuri mafuena as much as the next person but sometimes i wish people would focus more on how ena takes care of mafuyu. like when ena held her hand in one of the guiding a list child card stories. or when she was telling mafuyu to move when the light turned green in that one area conversation. they complement each other in so many different ways that's so fucking good and idk how to put it into words and i want to explode
