I have been losing my mind lately thinking about when Darkrai would actually cry.

I want this guy to have the worst crashout I can think of. Thousands of years of built up frustration and misery, all coming down.

Not that the latest crashout wasn’t enough already

I think this might be the worst dilemma about this whole AU.

Literally at ANY given opportunity Darkrai has to talk to Krako, he can just lie to her.

Tell her that he‘s giving up, swallowing up his pride and giving her exactly what she wants. A chance to let him out.

It‘s always been her goal to let him out and he knows that. The only thing he has to do is give in, tell her he will try to learn what she might teach him about life and abandon his darkness masterplan. He only needs her to believe it, to manipulate her into letting him out and leading him out of this hellhole.

Which I‘m sure he could absolutely pull of.

But he‘s never tried it. He never even considered it an option. Cause he fears that what if this strong desire for darkness can be changed? And if he doesn’t desperately want darkness anymore, where does it leave him?

Right at the start. No purpose. No goal. No happiness.

He fully belives that if someone takes away his only goal, darkness, that he‘ll never find peace or happiness in life ever again.

Darkrai forced himself to become a very egocentric person, from innocently questioning his existence, helping to avoid his ability for others happiness, to being so engulfed in it that he can‘t get out anymore. Every thought about himself pained him the longer he thought about it and so to avoid his hateful thinking, he created himself a peace of mind to justify his hurting. Even more, to full on commit to it.

It‘s so fun to play around with, cause he‘s literally fighting his own morality the whole time.

Technically this is alreaady a fix it fic, but uhm also it gets really angsty first. Slowburn fix it fic I guess?

It is so sad cause that's exactly what my thought was about Darkrai when thinking more about his depiction in Mystery Dungeon, cause everyone sees him as this evil god that needs to be stopped, cause he just spreads misery and pain for everyone.

And now I try to give him the depth and it is so sad to see that he as a character here projects this thinking from everyone else onto himself. Pokemon calling him evil, calling him scary, calling him undeserving of life. It sticks with him. And the moment he started beliving those words, he sees nothing more in himself than a creature harming others without reason. In this AU sometimes to a deadly degree even.

That's probably what makes this AU even sadder. He doesn't see that his ability can bring good things with him. He only sees the death trail behind him and desperately tries to damage control it, until he doesn't. He gives up, even worse embraces what he hates about himself and still looks back seeing trails of bodies. Then when finally looking forward he can see nothing else than more trails of bodies. Something he knows will happen, so why not just do exactly that?

Why not fall into the role that everyone wants to see him in. Doesn't change anything for him, except that he can cover up everything he hates about himself.

Which in this case is a win for him. So no one even dares to pity him. All they can see then is pure evil intentions.

You caught his helplessness so perfectly!! All we ever saw before this Arc was Darkrai acting in some kind of cocky way, avoiding confrontation when Krako tried to drill deeper, to understand what his damn problem is.

But it was never about the "how" and rather about the "when". She knew something was underneath. She knew it was there, but refused to give up the joy it brought him when he insulted her. Now he broke down, opened up, more forced than anything else.

I didn't exactly state it, but I imagine that he has these outbreaks regularly where he harms himself, but by the time when Krako arrives in his prison he tries as best as he can to present himself as clean as possible, only the thinnest lines of dried blood and little pebbles in his hair remaining.

Since we only see the perspective when Krako visits, we don't know what he does while Krako is gone. It surely takes Krako at least half a day to journey to the Zero Isle prison chamber, so daily visits are extremely time and energy consuming. Even for her.

So what does he do when Krako isn't there for a few days? I imagine that a completely different side often shows itself when he is alone. And Arc 1 is an example where Krako storms right into this phase and he is finally able to share his concerns with someone else.

Cause this guy never had a Pokemon to share his concerns to. He sat on his grudges, his problems and most importantly his misery.

To a point where he's sure that killing himself is the only way to end HIS pain.

He's still thinking about what would be best for him, which makes this even more tragic. Cause he wants death now. He fight his whole life to be accepted to live and now he's realised that his death is the freedom he wants now more than ever.

The endless spiral ouuughh... it makes me sick. Cause this is the Arc where it all shows. I've drawn him overplaying pain, denying pain, hiding pain and in this Arc he's finally honest. To Krako, to himself. But it's not something new.

Krako always knew that something hid underneath and that it wasn't pretty. She shouldn't be surprised. Yet it still hits her like a truck.
