Blue specifically tagged me to rec fanworks about Thedas at large or about Solas specifically, so I am of course going to go with the latter. Today I'm gonna recommend Keturagh, who writes some of the hottest (and most interesting from a character perspective, imo) kinky dom!Solas fic I have ever read. They also write gorgeous, lyrical, poetic prose and have *such* a firm grasp of Solas's character. This meta essay about Solas, for example, has lived rent-free in my brain since the first time I read it.

Fic: The Fire is Burning

Solas could not unpiece his thoughts. He wanted to dream, for she was too pressing, too soft and real and good, and she kept bringing him back to this camp in the hills. Help, he thought, help. This was no spirit’s landscape. How had he forgotten about this boundary between waking and dreams, this linearity of sensation? It went: she touched him. He felt. She loved him. He loved.

I am obsessed with how well Solas's POV is handled in this fic. Yes, it's smut, yes it's kinky, and yes it's very hot -- but Solas also sounds so ancient and esoteric and it's a fascinating look into his head. The angst is also absolutely positively delicious.

Fic: mornings

There’s an urgency to how he holds her in the night: arms like twisted sheets, his chest pressed against her back and sticky with his sweat, his mouth on her shoulder — his head moves sometimes in the night, his dreams troubled, and she feels his lips gently brushing her skin.

This is a sweet little fluff fic, and it's also the first fic by Keturagh I read. It just says so much about Pangara and Solas's relationship in so few words and endeared me to them immediately.

Fic: False Fruit

Wrenched asunder, the living soul left form behind, then became a shining blade, and the blade fell up into the sky. This is how it was: no longer were there hours nor days nor nights nor seasons, but only tidal shifts. This is how it was: no longer were there distinctions. Above, the river of blades. Below, the blades were stars and the river was pulled. Sometimes the river jumped her banks; that is how it was. Then from that Void, a voice. Dear friend. I miss you. 

This one is longfic in progress that I'm still in the process of reading, but I cannot recommend it enough. It plays with form in a way that's so delightful and refreshing, and the premise -- a time-travel back to Elvhenan fix-it fic with a twist -- is so cool and unique. The writing, of course, is absolutely gorgeous.

Really interesting how, iirc, of all the crimes sj got charged with, being an (ex?) demonic cultivator wasn't one of them.

The child abuse and the brothel going, the vow breaking and murder and arson, none of those could be connected to lbhs behaviour (at the time he was still in disguise as a human cultivator).

But accusing him of demonic cultivation? Training under famous criminal wyz? That would have carried a much bigger weight in the cultivation world than one off instances he did as a kid before he joined the mountain decades ago. The rest of the stuff, yeah it's nasty, but it's not cultivation ruining in bed with demons blood drinking pagan rituals in their good Christian righteous jianghu taboo.

If airplane had wanted lbh would have found or faked all the evidence necessary, regardless of if lbh even thought sj actually had done it, just like the rest of his crimes.

It would have been pretty interesting, though, if sj had done it. Had learned demonic cultivation and kept learning it in secret for when his own crippled cultivation failed, giving him a huge edge just in understanding how the enemy thinks. Knowing their tactics, their average capabilities, how to fudge a talisman, how to draw out someone else's energy by force if necessary. (One of my favourite fics for this is The Original Goods does some Original Good, totally check it out. Spymaster Sqq ftw.)

Now, back in svsss canon, can you imagine if sy could do demonic cultivation?? After throwing lbh in the abyss for being a demon, after running from him, after xinmo, after marrying him. Wife plot twist! Damsel rushes to the aid of his heavily injured demonic husband, busts out some impossible demonic moves to save him!

Lbh would find that very validating, very confusing, and more than likely Really Quite Hot.

How sy would even know he could do demonic cultivation, I'll let you decide, but imagine if there was also a body swap later and sy used both demonic and human qi like he'd been doing it his entire life. (I will also rec Inappropriate Use May Result in Strange Side Effects because it is also really good!)

But the fact that Sqq has a history of demonic cultivation and then marries a half demon emperor who can use both naturally? And the way sy treated lbh supposedly because of his fear/hate of the demonic? Only for it to turn out that he himself had been using demonic energy before lbh had even been born?? But also the horrible things sj went through as a demonic cultivator 'in training' under wyz? Leaving 'Sqq' with that trauma? The potential fear that lbh would enact or even just catch Sqq in the blast radius of all of that again?

Sqq accidentally stumbling on a plausible reason to explain his meta knowledge panic without a system reveal? Demonic cultivation trauma? A way to relieve his husbands guilt and own lingering trauma of rejection?? To prove to him that the abyss wasn't his fault or of any innate disgust of his very being??? He'd be all over that like system on an ooc breach.

Also, it would be extremely cool.

Right now a bunch of fic writing is churning around and out of brain, and circumstances have aligned for better or worse such that i have time and mental energy and ideas to write. we'll see how it goes. Once I get a bit more posted on tumblr i'll probably put things together and either make seperate works for different aus, or a masterwork of different tumblr aus that i don't think i'll develop further. i may turn some of those bulletpoint lists into cleaner fics for posting, making my earlier point moot.

some of my aus i already have a bunch written on my phone over meals or stopped in the middle of a side walk or on bus and train rides (why would an ELEVEN HOUR TRAIN RIDE not have an outlet to charge my laptop??). so. if i clean that stuff up ill probably post it to tumblr, then immediately notice the spelling mistakes, edit, then post to ao3.

for my most recent snippet, well, that's actually self contained (not an au that requires 6 paragraphs of background to understand the snippet) and not a chat fic, so i WAS thinking i would just post it to ao3 soonish. i asked in the tags if anyone felt like betaing for ao3, i am wildly but unquestioningly assuming that the sorta individual who would want to beta a fic for me are reading the tags on my tumblr fic post. if anyone likes betaing stormlight or is interested in betaing a specific au/fic idea i've mentioned, hit me up.

TLDR above, tumblr is a for fun rough draft looser writing form place for me. ao3 feels like its asking for a bit more polish and structure. i have writing bees in my brain right now so i'm slightly more focused on that then editing, but if anyone feels like doing some form of beta, reach out and we can chat about it. regardless, i will clean up at least some of my recent snippets and post to ao3 eventually.

I'm mean this very /gen, but I've seen a lot of posts recently talking about how fans need to think more about Aziraphale and not baby Crowley and based on these posts fans seem heavily skewed towards Crowley but... I'm hardly in this Fandom, I pop in from time to time to see art and fic and meta for like a week or two, go away for a bit, and then come back and check in again, and generally what I've seen more than anything, is posts about Aziraphale and his trauma and why he's suffering the most and Crowley should have Done Better and Aziraphale Defense no matter what, any aziraphale critique seen as hate...

So I'm not sure where this disconnect is happening. We're apparently seeing completely opposite sides of the Fandom, but it seems like the overwhelming majority. So I see posts that are like, okay let's focus more on Aziraphale, and I'm like, that's literally all I'm seeing......this isn't meant to start something, bc I honestly am curious how this is happening and how everyone is either miscommunicating or idk something

hi anon! first of all, sorry it took me so long to get to this ask - it's partly because i really don't know the answer. i've spoken to others about this phenomenon of everyone seeming to only see the opposite of whatever "side" they've personally chosen, and it does seem to happen a lot. i have a theory it's partially confirmation bias - as in people ignore what they see that agrees with what they already think, and only focus on/remember what doesn't because they want to believe there is opposition to their opinion - partially temporal (maybe especially temporal for you, if you only dip in and out!) - as in more people have come around to seeing Aziraphale's side of things the more time has passed after the initial pain of s2 making a lot of people side more with Crowley - and partially that there is a real divide.

personally, i think that choosing "sides" between two characters who love each other is...silly. i think both of them were wrong and right in different ways, they both hurt each other, and they both have some development they need to do to forgive and earn each other's forgiveness.

however, i do think there was a huge initial wave of hatred thrown at Aziraphale that some folks are still very much riding. since season 1, i think Crowley has always been the fandom favourite, and i say that in full appreciation of the fact that in terms of fandom, the GO fandom is a rare one where the disparity between fandom favourites is much smaller than in most. plenty of people love Aziraphale, but he doesn't tend to get the same treatment as Crowley. and it's understandable - Crowley is a sad wet cat of a demon, and people love an underdog, an antihero. i think a lot of folks really relate to Crowley in his bitterness, his depression, his resent. he's been treated badly, rejected, tossed aside, and persists regardless, and - unfortunately - a lot of people know how that feels. it helps that Crowley is very easy to read (despite his best efforts), especially to the audience. his motivations are clear and relatable.

Aziraphale, on the other hand, is...kinda more complicated. he's generally operating on so many layers of deceit and denial that i don't know if he himself fully understands how he truly feels half the time - he's not honest about his emotions to the audience or himself. that doesn't make for an accessible, relatable character for most people, but for those with whom it resonates, it really resonates.

let me be clear: Crowley is not a bad character for being easier to read. Aziraphale is not a bad character for being harder to read. they're just different and appeal to different people.

I'm just leaving you this ask because I have not been on Tumblr much since January, but I found out today that you joined me down the slippery slope of 911LS and 911 fandom (though I stopped watching the latter a couple of years ago and am only reading fics) and it's just nice to know that we still share the same criteria for finding potential in a ship, it feels nostalgic! :P Would you like fic recs or are you good?

Oh my gosh yes I'm so deep down this rabbithole now, I'm writing so much garbage fic over it. I love that we're still on that overlapping wavelength - so funny how over more than a literal decade we can still go - yes, this. YES YOU GET IT!

Carlos and TK own my whole heart right now, oh my gosh. I'm obsessed. I'm about ready to make myself a supercut of the show where it's only scenes that are relevant to them lololol but I won't because I still love everyone else so much too like Nancy is my girl and jfc we get GINA TORRES I'm dead. Bur Carlos and TK dear god, I'm so deep in writing fic about them I'm literally forgetting to eat some days. I'm scouring scenes for background details. I'm writing stupid meta over clothing choices reflecting Carlos's emotional state. So ridiculous but honestly so fun.

And the whole Buck/Tommy thing took me OUT man, it's so fucking funny, I know I'm a late join to this fandom but I didn't even know it was coming. I just heard people talking about how they were excited Buck was bi, and I saw a few Buck/Eddie gifsets and genuinely assumed that was the canon ship. More interesting to me was all the talk about how we were missing out if we didn't already know that Hen was a hot badass lesbian firefighter so I was like - shit I'll check that out just for that part actually. So I did, and of course I adore Hen and Chim and Maddie and - ok just everyone - and was casually like, yeahh I see why people ship Buck/Eddie, does not vibe for me but I see it, that's nice they got their canon ship... and then I get to S7 and TOMMY shows back up and meets Buck and I bluescreen for a while because ohhhhhk yes, this is the chemistry for me. Yes.

So yeah, in the end I don't ship Buck/Eddie like... at all really. I feel the way about it that I do about Steve/Bucky which is basically... the way I feel about my childhood best friend who is also queer and who I love profoundly and intimately and not like a sister but also not like a lover y'know?

But I will always take recs my darling! Even when I don't ship it, I love all the characters so much regardless so if it's great I'll read it. And tell me what you love about your favorite characters and fav ships! So nice to hear from you and I hope you're doing well!

Managing Calibre and FanFicFare - Additional Plugins, Tips, and Tricks

Here's a few more scenarios you may run into while managing your local fanfic archive and how to navigate them. As well as additional plugins that might make your life easier when managing your fanfic library - or any library of eBooks you may choose to use Calibre to control.

Anthology Options aren't working:

In this scenario, you've installed Calibre and the FanFicFare plugin, but the anthology options aren't being made available in the FanFicFare options menu. Don't worry, this isn't a problem with either Calibre or FanFicFare. Sometimes plugins will depend on other plugins for additional functionality and that's what's happening here.

FanFicFare will utilize the Epub Merge and Epub Split plugins as part of it's anthology creation process. If you go to the plugins management modal, choose the option to get more plugins, and search for these two plugins then you should be able to install them. They are two separate plugins and Calibre will need to restart after each install. Once they're both added to your Calibre instance and everything has been restarted, check out the FanFicFare menu again and you should see the anthology options available now.

I missed this while creating my initial walkthrough for Calibre + FanFicFare since I already had these plugins installed.

But what do the Epub Merge/Split plugins do? It is pretty much what it says on the tin. Epub Merge allows for merging multiple eBooks of the same format into a single new eBook. Useful for taking separate chapters and merging into a single book or taking books in a series and merging into a single anthology. If you have a bunch of stray recipe files, you could turn them into a custom recipe eBook. In turn, if you have an anthology eBook then you can use Epub Split to split out the separate books into unique files to make tracking which parts you've already read easier.

FanFicFare takes advantage of this functionality for it's fanfiction anthology management options. But you can utilize them separately for your own uses as well, either by assigning them to the toolbar or adding to them to a control menu.

Updating missing metadata:

There are two different ways to go about this, depending on whether you're wanting to update the file for a single fanfic or for an anthology series.

For single books, this process can work regardless of whether the fic was downloaded using Calibre + FanFicFare or if it was downloaded/created via other means. If you've directly downloaded a file off ao3, used a browser tool to create a fanfic off of FFnet, or simply added new columns for meta data tracking that weren't there when you original created the eBook file - it's actually pretty easy to update the metadata for a single eBook.

First you're going to want to check the book's metadata in the metadata editor. On the default tab in the metadata editor, there should be a field labeled "id". This field needs to be populated with the URL for the fanfiction. If it's already populated, you should be good. But if you need to switch to a different URL or add one, then the field should be formatted like this: "url:https://www.dummyfanfic.url.com/"

Once you've verified the URL is correct or added the URL if necessary, save and exit the metadata editor. Make sure the entry for the book (or books) you want to update is selected in the main eBook list and then head over to the FanFicFare control menu. Choose the option to Update Existing FanFiction Books from the menu.

The update modal should pop up with a list of all selected eBooks pre-populated and indicating if FanFicFare can update them. Any non-anthology eBook with a valid url in the id field should be indicated with a green icon as a valid update option. Any anthology eBook or single fanfic with an invalid url or empty id field will be indicated with a red x. If you choose to update the file, then only the valid options will be updated.

Before clicking the OK button, you'll want to update the following settings in the modal. Beneath the list in the modal should be a select box where you can choose to Update Calibre Metadata from Web Site - this will cause the updater to only check for metadata and not overwrite the existing eBook. And a checkbox for Update Calibre Metadata - sometimes the select option alone is not enough if the eBook is otherwise up to date; this will force the metadata to update once gathered. Choose the select option and check the checkbox, then click the OK button.

The job should run and update any eBook with a valid URL that is not an anthology.

For Anthologies, this is only going to work for eBooks created through FanFicFare. You might be able to manually add a series url to a regular eBook, but I haven't tested it and can't be certain it won't simply recreate and overwrite your existing eBook file. That said, if a series used to be tracked on one website and you want to track it on a different one now - say a series moved from Twisting the Hellmouth to Ao3 or from Ao3 to SquidgeWorld - you should be able to update the main series page url in the metadata editor's id field the same as you would for a single fic. But I haven't tested this yet either. So be warned, this isn't going to work exactly like the single book metadata update. Though the process is very similar.

You'll probably be doing this if you added new metadata tracking columns or if a new fic has been added to the series and you want to ensure the new metadata for this fic is added to the data being tracked for the entire series once updated.

Anthologies can only be updated one at a time. Select the book you want to update and then open the FanFicFare control menu. Select the Anthology Options, which will open a flyout menu. From there, choose Update Anthology Epub.

A modal should open with the list of URLs for the fanfics included in the anthology. Check the option at the bottom of the modal that is labeled "Update Calibre Metadata?" and then click the OK button. NOTE: if updating the anthology will mean losing an existing fic included in the series, it will warn you before allowing you to proceed. Be aware that if parts of a series have been deleted, you may want to simply manually update the anthology's metadata.

The job should run and update the anthology's metadata on completion, as well as updating the eBook itself with any new chapters or fics associated with the series.

Picking additional plugins:

There are a lot of plugins available for Calibre - officially supported or otherwise. While I'm mainly going to touch on officially supported plugins here - AKA, plugins that can be added using Calibre's internal add plugin flow - I am going to mention one plugin that would need to be side loaded. I'm not going to explain how to use that one since it is not useful for fanfic management, but it's good to know it exists for managing other, non-fanfic eBooks.

Find Duplicates

This plugin does essentially what it says on the tin. You can use it to find duplicates, so if you have multiple versions of the same fic from different sites (and possibly different author names, since they may not have kept the same user name from one site to another), this plugin can quickly evaluate your library and display the resulting selection. From there you can determine whether they're actually duplicate files and remove any unneeded entries.

For non fanfic library maintenance, this is also useful for identifying entries for different eBook file formats - epub, azw, mobi, et cetera - and combining them into a single entry that tracks all formats. Or merging metadata for two entries of the same eBook that also have the same format. You'll want to be very careful if merging two entries with the same format type so that an earlier version of an eBook doesn't replace a more recent version.

Mass Search/Replace

This is very useful for cleaning up and consolidating tags in your custom metadata. Fandom names will vary from site to site: Ao3 will use The Flash (2014) while SquidgeWorld uses the similar The Flash [2014] while FFnet will just call it The Flash. Character names may also differ from archive to archive: B. Sisko on FFnet would be Benjamin Sisko on Ao3 and you probably want all the fics with everyone's favorite Emissary to the Prophets tagged with the same name.

Once you've installed the plugin, it's fairly simple to use. Make sure to add it to a toolbar and then click the icon on the toolbar to bring up it's control menu. Choose Quick Search/Replace and from the flyout menu choose the Library option to search through and change tags across the entire open Library.

A modal should open with a list and a single entry already present on the list. Double click the entry to edit it. Another modal will open where you can assign the search field from among the columns, the tag you're searching for, and the tag you want to replace it with. You can also test the replacement at the bottom of the modal before going forth on a full replacement.

Additionally you can change whether it'd replacing based on exact character matches or using a regular expression - I'd recommend sticking to exact character matches if you're unfamiliar with how to use regular expressions. You can also replace an entire field, but I definitely do not recommend that one.

There are various other settings in there too and you can even save searches for re-use later. When trying out a new setting, always test it first before rewriting the tags on your entire library. If you can back up your library before trying something risky, the plugin itself recommends doing so.

Once you've got your search set up and working as expected in the tests, choose the OK button to close the second modal. This will return you to the first modal. Click OK on the first modal to run the search/replace function.

WARNING: In case you missed it before, this is a very powerful tool and, consequently, can really screw up your library if you're not careful. Backing up your library before making changes is highly advised.

TTS to MP3

This one isn't necessarily obvious based on the name at first. TTS here refers to "Text to Speech". This plugin is useful for creating an mp3 file using Text to Speech to 'read' an eBook for you. If you like listening to your fanfics and no one has podficced a fanfic yet, you can use this option to convert a fanfic to an audiofile.

I'm not super familiar with this one's usage yet, so I'm not going to include instructions for using it. It won't hurt anything to play around with it until you figure it out, though. And it's definitely no replacement for having a real person doing a pod fic since the computer isn't going have the natural pauses and rests of a human voice between paragraphs and the like. But when you're hankering for an audio version of a fic and there is none, it's better than nothing at all.

CalibreSpy

If you want to be able have read access to your fanfic library while managing a different library in Calibre - or vice versa - this is the plugin for you. It essentially allows you to search for, open, and read eBooks from any library Calibre manages while having a different library open for direct management. Since you can only directly manage one library at a time, this is useful for if a book has gotten lost and you want to find which library it was accidentally moved to or simply want to have a book open to read from a different library while still managing the currently open one.

Library Splitter

This sticks a frontend on the existing Calibre functionality for moving eBooks between libraries. You can use this to copy books between libraries or move them entirely (copy to a new location and delete the original), which is useful when splitting a new library out from an old one or if you dumped a bunch of eBooks into a default library to sort through later.

If you've chosen to manage multiple fanfic libraries, then you can use this for moving fanfics between the different local archives. But it's also useful for if you've accidentally added a non-fanfic file to the archive and want it moved to the library it actually belongs to without having to delete and re-add the file.

You can add this plugin to a toolbar, but it's functionality will also be available in the menu that appears when right clicking an entry on the main eBook list.

DeDRM/NoDRM

This one isn't really for fanfic management nor is it an officially supported Calibre plugin. Originally called DeDRM, it's been forked and renamed NoDRM since the original maintainer gave up control of the project. (Lack of time, I think?)

This is for stripping DRM off your eBooks. And it is very good at what it does. A lot of people have contributed - and continue to contribute - to allow people to rip the DRM off their eBooks and read their files - or loan their files - however they may choose to. This works with most major DRM types, though you may need to do additional work beyond just side loading the plugin to allow it to do it's thing. Kindle books in particular need a lot of prep to work - downloading two additional (and officially supported) KFX plugins as well as directly configuring the plugin (the easiest method involves using the serial number for a kindle device you physically own and have linked to your account, so you'll have to work a lot harder if you don't own a kindle device).

You'll want to do a lot of research with this one, but Calibre + DeDRM/NoDRM is one of the big appeals to using Calibre for regular eBook management. It was certainly what originally drew me to Calibre since I wanted to be able to read my eBooks in whatever eReader app I wanted to, as well as consolidate my collection from multiple sources.

The GitHub repository for NoDRM is found here and will have more information on how to use and install the plugin.

Since you own the file, technically you can strip off the DRM for your own use. But it's definitely a gray area which is why Calibre doesn't officially support the plugin.

so, i'm trying my best to deal with bbc sh after 5 years, and I really think that we will have an s5 in the near future, they have given a lot hits about, (BC finally talking about a new season, the free copyright party 2023...)

So, my biggest problem with the s4 is the morgue scene, and i've been reading some s4 fix-its that properly deal with john's behavior. I read some about Sherlock leaving/moving on after what happened (my favorites I must say, cause I can't forgive john) (+ sanjay my beloved)

And I ended up in a category of "dark john", and I'm sure some traumatized me forever

I read this fic, post s3, where j&s has an established relationship post mary, and their relationship starts to change to something abusive (on john's part), this fic is amazing, honest and realistic about abusive relationships, and well the ending is tragic for johnlock, with an happy ending only for sherlock.

Then I saw that the fic was from 2015???? And that left me shocked, cause... john's behavior was always like this? Should we have realized sooner what was going to happen?? And that just made me hate the show even more. And looking back, maybe it was always there, especially after the fall. At least me, I never really gotten my head around the violence scenes, and I took the morgue scene as something OOC from John, but now I don't think it was. It makes me so sad.

I wanted to know if there are any metas and analysis about john's behavior in the show, because WATSON would never do something like that. I hate this show with all my heart at this point, It's ruined me :(

Thanks! I appreciate you letting me take time to answer this. Not necessarily anything other than "lol it was long and I was lazy" hahaha.

ANYWAY, this is just my perception of the fandom before S4: No, John wasn't overtly portrayed as a "dark" character... I think the darkest the majority thought of him as was as just a man with anger issues he was working on. That said, regardless of fandom, there's ALWAY ALWAYS a "dark" genre of fics where one or the other "protagonists" are characterized as "morally ambiguous to downright evil" people, and that's all it is. Dark Sherlock and John fics were a popular subgenre once upon a time, but I've never personally read any of them because I have a hard time with fics if the characterizations are "off" from my readings of them (literally it's just me), but I have no problem if that's what someone else wants to write about.

As for meta, the closest I can do for you are these meta about who John is as a character, and you can check out my 'who is john watson' blog tag for more (I've put it under the Chrono tag so you can see the earliest posts first).

why all reylos are racist

y’all can go ahead and cancel me now because some of you are not going to like what i have to say and i am completely okay with that.

this recent gq interview with john boyega has incensed me. hearing all the things he went through, from disney and from “fans” and with no support from anyone… i’m livid. sometimes when i think about it for too long i start shaking, i’m so furious. and the response from the reylo fandom has infuriated me to a degree i honestly didn’t know was possible.

some of you may have seen my recent tumblr rampage. it’s reylo bullying hours here on my blog, and i’m not sorry either. one person threatened to post screenshots of my comments, which like… okay? i know what the fuck i said, it wasn’t that long ago. in fact i was going to include the screenshots in this post right here, but they blocked me before i had the chance. sorry. i’m sure somebody has them. anyway…

over the past two days in the star wars fandom we have seen something unprecedented: an outpouring of support for john boyega. both reylos and anti-reylos have joined forces to voice support for john in the wake of the gq interview (and the blm protests, let’s be real, some of y’all would not have given half a fuck if it wasn’t suddenly cool to be antiracist). and this showing of unity is one of the most rage-inducing things i’ve ever seen in a fandom (which is saying something; i have seen some shit).

reylo fandom, full offense intended, but where the fuck do you get off? you’re supporting john now? where was this support when tfa came out and you couldn’t stand the thought of him next to your white-girl-self-insert? where was it when tlj came out and your boy ryan completely sidelined him? where was it earlier this fucking year when y’all twisted a harmless joke (like yall haven’t spent years writing reylo-throne-room-sex-meta BULLSHIT) and ignored the vile racist shit coming from your own fav’s mouth? but you’re supporting him now? now that being antiracist is trendy? fuck outta here with that bullshit.

your fandom is the reason for the vast majority of the absolutely subhuman treatment john has endured over the last few years. your fandom influenced ryan (yes i know what his name is) to write tlj the way he did, you have behaved indefensibly here on tumblr.hell writing and drawing and fantasizing about all sorts of racist bullshit, and y’all have STAYED in his twitter mentions spewing hatred seven ways to sunday. but NOW, without a shred of self-reflection, you’re supporting him? now his experiences are valid?

the way that your fandom refuses to take accountability for its actions makes me see red. y’all stay on some “not all reylos” nonsense and i am SICK OF IT. i’m only gonna say this once, and i want you to hear me: you cannot be a reylo and be “antiracist”. you cannot participate in a fandom that has behaved the way yours has and say “blm, uwu acab.” you can’t. like do you think black people are dumb? that we can’t see right through you? we can.

“but rae,” i hear you whining. “you’re gonna say just because i like two characters together i’m a racist?” and of course not. that would be ludicrous. i think just because you knowingly engage and participate in a fandom that has racism encoded in its dna, you’re a racist. i think because y’all are in bed with racist harassers, racist trolls, and racist content creators, you’re a racist. that’s what the fuck i think. y’all lost the right to “it’s just a ship” me the instant you dragged john boyega into this.

here’s an example: i watched tfa about three days after it came out. i watched the first half, saw the obvious relationship set up between finn and rey, and thought, “aw, cute.” then i watched kylo and rey fight, watch him offer to teach her, and thought, “... interesting.”

when i got home i checked tumblr for finnrey content, saw the outpouring of love from black fans, all the cute fanart and fics blooming, and smiled. then, slowly, guiltily, i searched “reylo.”

BOOM. racism. the things i saw in the tag that night are tattooed on my brain. reylos rejoicing about the obvious rey/kyle pairing because “sw would never put her with that monkey finn”. calling him an “oaf”, “useless”, “bumbling”, “stupid”. reylos joking about how “when they talked about the Dark side, [they] didn’t think they meant that kind of dark.” “woke” reylos pretending to ship stormpilot in an obvious ploy to get finn away from kylo. and in between all of that, cute ship art. fun fics. talented gif makers. and nobody saying shit about the reprehensible behavior going on in their tag.

reylo is built on a foundation of racism. from that first week, racism has been woven into the fabric of your fandom, and it’s been going unchecked. and i don’t mean calling out other reylos. that’s not enough. i mean taking actual steps. y’all have been sitting in a cesspool of racism for five years, and its time for you to get the fuck out or shut the fuck up about being an “ally”. y’all need to leave this fandom.

don’t agree? here’s another story. in 2017, when i still watched supergirl (before i grew taste) i shipped karamel. for those of you who don’t know, karamel is the ship of kara zor-el (supergirl) and mon-el, her second love interest. when supergirl was moved to the cw for its second season, the decision was made to abruptly end her romance with jimmy olsen, played by mecahd brooks (a black man) and replace him with mon-el, played by chris wood, a white man, who was revealed to be, among other things, an alien slaveowner, as well as a playboy and all-around terrible person. and i shipped them. look, i’m not defending myself, but i never really bought the chemistry between jimmy and kara. even though mon-el’s introduction and the way that they carelessly disregarded kara’s feelings for jimmy made me uncomfortable, i thought the way melissa played her attraction to chris wood was more believable (and again, i’m not defending myself, but they are now married so it’s not like i was wrong). so i shipped them. simple as that, right?

well, no. not really. because the inherent racism in the way the writers wrote out her admittedly sweet romance with a black man in favor of a white slaveowner jerk kept bothering me. and finally i decided that it made me too uncomfortable to participate in. i never really reblogged any karamel fandom stuff, but i completely divorced myself from the fandom. i stopped reading karamel fic, and i switched to reblogging exclusively jimmy/kara content until the fandom died out/i stopped watching. i made a choice that real life racism is more important to me than a fucking fandom or a ship, and then i acted accordingly. simple as that.

and i’m not saying you have to stop liking the reylo dynamic. i still like the chemistry between kara and mon-el. i’ve shipped problematic ships before (bamon comes to mind) and i don’t think there’s anything wrong with that (to a point). but there’s a difference between liking a ship dynamic and engaging and contributing to a fan culture of racism. you have to stop participating in the fandom. y’all are in bed with people indistinguishable from confederate-flag-waving-all-lives-matter-touting racists and you don’t feel the need to get out of that environment? there comes a certain point where you have to decide if fandom bullshit is more important to you than fighting racism, and unfortunately, reylos have chosen wrong. that, ladies and gentlemen, is why all reylos are racist, regardless of what they say. roll credits.

except i have more to say, so i’m gonna say it. first of all, i’m not trying to hold myself up as some kind of paragon of virtue. i’m not holier-than-thou because all my ships are “woke” or whatever. chemistry is subjective, and we’re all going to be attracted to different ship dynamics, and there’s nothing wrong with that in theory. what matters is the execution. i finally had to say one day, “you know, this ship and the racist baggage it carries is actually less important to me than battling systemic racism on every level, including the fandom level”. y’all thought being antiracist was gonna be easy? that you wouldn’t have to make some actual changes, to make some actual sacrifices? sorry not sorry to disappoint. and if i, a normal-ass person with flaws and problematic thinking that i’m still dealing with and the whole ine yards, can make that decision, then other people should be required to as well.

(what really irks me is that the karamel fandom wasn’t even really that bad! i definitely could have gotten away with being a karamel stan in 2017. thankfully the supercat and supercorp shippers were doing the lord’s work and bullying them into submission (don’t think i’m letting y’all off the hook either, y’all have got some racism to deal with as well but that’s an essay for another day) but like most of the racism happened at the writing level; the fandom itself wasn’t engaging in racist clownery on the regular. but like the reylos are. y’all see racist bullshit coming from your neighbor, fav fic writer, artist, gif maker, whatever, and don’t say shit? don’t feel the need to distance yourself from them? gtfoh.)

i made this argument earlier when i was on my rampage (which i’m still on btw so don’t clown in my inbox, you will get your shit rocked) but i’m going to make it again because i feel like its important to note. when i pointed out that existing in the reylo fandom while you are aware of its racism makes you complicit in that racism, a white reylo told me earlier that (paraphrasing, my memory’s not as good as it used to be and i did mention that they’d blocked me) “you don’t solve a problem like systemic racism by ignoring it. leaving the fandom would be allowing it to happen.” when i pointed out that that’s police officer rhetoric almost verbatim, she (a white reylo) admonished me (a black woman) not to compare police brutality to a “ship war.” lmao.

look, clearly y’all need a refresher on what “systemic” means. it means, quite simply, that there are systems, large and small, allow for racism to exist, and it also means that allowing for racism to exist on the small scale means expecting it on a large one. like you think police officers spring fully formed from the head with racist ideals already ingrained? no! they learn it and learn to justify it with “well just because my friend made a racist joke doesn’t make me a racist” and “just because i laughed at my friend’s using a racist term in my video game doesn’t make me a racist” and “just because my friend is a racist doesn’t mean i’m a racist” and then we have people watching their coworkers kneel on a man’s back for 8 minutes with no remorse. i’m not gonna solve police brutality by fighting reylos on tumblr, but fandom racism is real racism with consequences on our world, and i don’t tolerate ANY type of racism. and the fact that you are so willing to not just tolerate it but justify it should say something to you.

and not all reylos are like this. similar to cops, good reylos don’t last. i have seen people grow so disgusted by the racism in the reylo fandom that they publicly turned their backs on it, and those reylos i respect. you’ve heard of “the only good cop is an ex-cop” well get ready for “the only good reylo is an ex-reylo”.

(and also like far be it from me to justify a cop but one could at least say they have their livelihoods to think about (not like they couldn’t just pick a nonmurderous profession but i digress) but you reylos can’t even choose between taking a stance against the hateful and unjustified bullying of a man who had the audacity to… get a job (?)... over a ship? come on now.)

the point of all this is, for all their posturing about “being antiracist” and “fuck 12” and “support john boyega”, reylos have decided that a relationship between two fictional people is more important than all the black and brown people who are hurt by that decision and the consequences of that decision. and before y’all pull some “b-but there are POC reylos!” (stop fucking using poc as an adjective, its a noun, it stands for person of color, please use it as such) internalized racism is a thing. busting out your token “reylo of color” (see how easy that was?) is not going to change my mind. all reylos are complicit in the racism of their peers, and being complicit makes you culpable. full stop.

and that is why the public support of john boyega from the reylo fandom has me seeing red. renounce your fandom or keep that man’s name out of your mouth. anyway, this was long and ranty and entirely stream-of-consciousness and i’m refusing to edit it so it’s probably completely incomprehensible to anyone besides me but if you made it this far thanks for reading ig. all reylos are racist, blm, fuck 12, acab, stan john boyega, don’t clown in my inbox unless you’re coming to bully me for being a karamel shipper, which i deserve (or do, i couldn’t give less of a fuck). good night.

I want to contribute, how can I apply?

Applications will be open from the 1st - 30th September. Anyone can apply, regardless of experience, and we will provide more details before the applications open.

What is the timeline and when are deadlines?

You can find a condensed version of the timeline in our tumblr sidebar, a more detailed timeline will be added when the contributor applications open!

Our creation period will start from the 14th October with monthly check-ins with contributors. In short, there is plenty of time and the mods hope to be flexible when needed to enable as many people as possible to participate!

Is the zine going to be only in digital format, or will you publish paper copies as well?

Our intentions right now are to keep it as a free digital zine. However, people are welcome to print the final zine for their own use!

Keeping the zine free and online eliminates additional worries about money and legal issues.

Will content about non-canon ships be allowed?

Yes, we will welcome non-canon ships! Please remember that the main zine will be SFW.

Are only new pieces eligible or is previously published art/ fics/ meta acceptable?

The zine is a collection of new pieces that haven’t been published online before, but of course contributors can post their creations online after the zine is released.

We would love to see artists and writers already active in the fandom get on board though!

Will there be overarching themes for the content?

At this stage we are simply wanting to collate pieces in the tone of the show, celebrating it and other fans. We would love to see pieces exploring the themes set out by the show itself but welcome other ones.

If there’s any themes or topics you would like addressed, let us know in the interest check which will be open until the 29th August!

Will there be a NSFW zine and if so what kind of content will be allowed in it?

We do not know yet if there will be one (if you would like to see one let us know in the interest check), if so, we will provide more details on what is allowed.

Is the zine gonna be a one-off or will issues be published regularly?

The zine is going to be a one-off, scheduled to be released in spring 2022.

How can I help/ get involved?

We have a full moderator team, so we currently don’t need more people to help organising. What you can do is apply to be a ontributor once the application opens in September and, of course, spread the word!

What is the maximum word count for fics/meta?

Exact specifications will be finalised over the coming week before the applications open, but we a thinking about a 1500 -2000 max word count. Shorter fics are fine too!

Will the zine be free/ will contributors get paid?

The zine will be free and contributors will not get paid. Basically, there's no money involved, in order to prevent legal issues.

How many contributors are you looking for?

We are currently thinking about 40-50, but that will depend on number and types of application, the length of the zine and other factor, so this might chnage! We will provide more details by the time the contributor applications open.

Can contributors submit more than one piece?

We're keeping it at one piece per person to allow as many people as possible to participate.

ZFAW: Fic Rec/Self Love Saturday

First of all, I’d really like to thank @zkfanworkweek / @hinaoyamas for organizing this amazing event! The fanworks that have come out of this week have been nothing short of spectacular. There’s never been a better time to be a Zutara shipper. Thank you, also, for altering today’s prompt and giving everyone a space to talk about their own work.

I’m relatively new to Zutara, and my contribution to the fandom so far has mostly consisted of metas. I’m currently writing two separate fics—I was actually going to publish an excerpt from one of them for Angst Wednesday but I chickened out at the last minute—but they have yet to be published. If you had told me ten years ago that I would end up writing essays for fun, I would have laughed in your face, and yet…here we are. Writing these metas has been a genuinely enjoyable process for me these past few months. There’s something about Zutara that really lends itself to character analysis, and I’ve loved being part of it.

Self-promotion feels so weird, but here are what I consider to be my best metas:

Hey, guys! I know it has been an age since I updated or posted any fic. I uh... I’ve been going through a lot. 

Many of you, I’m sure, are now familiar with Omegaverse and A/B/O Dynamics. I have a deep and abiding love for this particular brand of trash, and I’ve recognized that there is a lack of it in the DC fandom. SO! Surprise, surprise! I’m coming back with Part I for a Jason A/B/O fic.

Making time for a meal was often too much work for Jason. He ate on the go, eight out of ten times. The rare occasions he sat still to consume food usually involved an invitation from Alfred, like today’s debacle of a lunch. Steph was fighting with Bruce (shocker), Barbara had the flu, and Cass was diligently working one doozy of case. Her brief email rundown was more than considerate, given that she was using a satellite connection on the ass-crack of the planet in some Godforsaken jungle.

Trying to find the time to arrange a date? Ridiculous.

           “C’mon, Jay,” Dick taps his shoulder with his knuckles. “I think you’d really like her. And her brother’s in the life, so it’s not like you have to deal with the ‘secret identity’ stuff.”

           Now that was a plus, just not enough of one to lure Jason out of his malcontent. “Who’s ‘er brother?” he asks around a mouthful of sandwich, hoping to change the subject.

           “Oh, a meta-guy I worked with in Spiral.”

           The deliberate nonchalance of the eldest Robin makes Jason bristle. “Yeah,” he reiterates, tucking the massive bite into his cheek to speak more clearly. “And his name was?”

           “Not the important part,” Dick dodges again. “The important parts are that she’s an omega living in Gotham who does charity work for a living. She is also very cute! I have a picture.” At this point, he sets down the family sized bag of plain Lays (abominable) and fishes his phone out of his back pocket.

           Tim, thank Christ, decides to weigh in on the matter. “I feel like who her brother is happens to be important, considering that you specified he knows who Jason is, and by proxy the rest of us…”

           “I didn’t say that!”

“You said I wouldn’t have to keep my identity a secret, because he’s in the life. That wouldn’t be relevant unless he knew me,” Jason motions to his chest vigorously, some stray shreds of lettuce escaping his sandwich.

“That’s not what I said” Dick insists.

“It’s what you implied with what you said.” Tim points at Dick with a cheese puff, pinky aloft, then pops the snack into his mouth to state another observation. “Also, regardless of whether or not he knows Jason, he knows who you are. That means he already knows who we are, and I’d really like to have his name, Dick.”  

“Tim, shut up. This isn’t about you.”

“Let’s watch our tone, boys,” Alfred says, breezing into the kitchen with a faintly disappointed air to have found them, not only arguing, but hunched vulture-like around the kitchen island decimating what would have been decent leftovers. “Master Dick, we all know how Jason feels about match-making: much the way Master Bruce feels about it.”

Outwardly admonished, Dick says something to schmooze Alfred while he slides his phone over to Jason. Never one to deny curiosity, Jason peers down to see the girl Dick’s pestering him about. She’s a round young woman in a dirty pink T-shirt holding up a mop-head of a puppy with a big, goofy smile on her face. Her hair is windswept, she’s clearly sunburned, her front teeth have a gap between them, and she’s possibly the most adorable human being he’s ever seen in his life.

Shaking his head, Jason says, “She’s not my type.”

Unrepentant and quick to ignore the wave of wry disapproval emanating from Alfred, Dick stops mid-excuse to say, “Oh, she is so your type. Don’t lie to me.”

“She looks twelve!” Jason recoils, scrunching his face and glancing back down at the sweet girl in the photo. “The hell’s wrong with you?”

“She does not,” Dick defends himself, using his back to block Tim’s snooping look toward the screen. He double checks the picture himself, and a few moments pass. “Okay,” he shoots Jason a resentful glance while swiping forward a few times. “She looks a little young in that particular picture, but she’s in her twenties. Here! Look at this one.”

Tim to the rescue again! “Uh, I thought you said you had a picture, Dick. As in one.”

Dick doesn’t bother to dignify that with more than a muttered, “Puh-lease.” Like they weren’t all aware that folders full of images on anyone were only a few clicks away. Tim, especially.

Jason tunes out of the bickering that begins between them as Dick continues to exclude Tim, physically using his body as a barrier and failing to hold the phone steady for Jason’s eyes. She’s in a bikini top seated in a cheap plastic kiddy pool, more tanned and freckled with her hair restrained somewhat successfully in a braid that sits over her shoulder. Three massive dogs crowd around her for attention, but her eyes, amber from the angle of the sun, are staring straight at the camera. This smile is shyer; lips hiding her teeth, shoulders bent forward to bring her chest in and mask the soft rolls on her stomach brought out by her position sitting upright. She does look to be markedly older in this particular photo.

“How many damn dogs does she have?” Jason returns to his sandwich, averting his eyes and willing his voice to be dismissive.

“She works at the new shelter in East End, bruh. These aren’t her dogs.”

Damian ghosted into the kitchen at some point and posted himself behind Jason. The older brother pretends that he’s not startled to hear the kid speak. “Really? I’ve been reading good things about their practice. No-kill, good rehoming rates. Working to coordinate with other shelters and founding a spay/neuter program...” he trails off, weaseling between the two oldest brothers to have a look at Dick’s phone. “Smart advertising too. A scantily clad omega female sitting a pool with freshly groomed dogs? Good call. I bet those three have already been adopted.”

“Scantily clad?” Tim prods, doubly straining to maneuver around Dick.

Mercifully, however, this brings the picture show to an end. Dick huffs, glancing uncomfortably at Damian and tucking his phone away. Apparently, an actual twelve year old commenting on a woman’s state of dress is enough to upset his sensibilities.

Damian looks at Jason, eyes piercing and the same green as his own. He digs a hand into Dick’s bag of potato chips and says, “You should date her. She was attractive enough, and I’m sure she’s a lovely person.”

The child is unblinking as he withdraws a handful of chips and begins to eat them while starting Jason down. He half expects the little fucker to wave his free hand and pull some Jedi mind trick gag, but remembers that Damian doesn’t do pop culture humor when Tim’s in the room.

Jason drops his sandwich on the naked stone counter as though he’s discovered mold. “Well, that’s it for me,” he says, edging toward the sunroom and the side door into the gardens. “I gotta’ go.”
