The Last of Us [ EP 8 ]
Spoilers ahead!
I want to talk about this scene, one because it means so much to me and many others, but because of Joel.
Tumblr media
It's not just that he's there, it's that even though he doesn't understand WHY she is screaming and terrified that someone is touching her, he immediately comforts her.
He has no idea what just happened to her, but he knows her well enough now to know that something is VERY WRONG here.
He can't fight it anymore, he immediately goes into dad mode. Protection. Comfort.
WITHOUT QUESTION.
He's still fighting that infection from the stab wound and isn't even back to full health, but that doesn't matter. He can handle that, but he can't handle losing his child again.
He has this extremely sensitive and intense core to his character of being a parent, and he had that RIPPED away. He is so hesitant to let that part of himself into the light again, but it is so vital to who he is.
This is a moment where he finally realizes that he has gotten to her and in a way he did save her. Not physically. But emotionally.
Tumblr media
I love Joel so much, and I wish I had someone like that for me.

Friendly reminder that no one ever cared about Ellie's safety or ever wanted to protect her like Joel did, and you can see how surprised and happy she is when Joel fastens her seat belt in the car in the #1x04.
At that point of the story, Ellie still thinks that Joel does all of it because he has to, and maybe Joel thinks that too until halfway through their journey, but he's protecting her nonetheless.
And she can't stop herself from being happy and feel like a little girl, even if it's just for a second.

I want to be loved the way Joel loves Ellie. He may be flawed and a bit selfish, but who wouldn’t want to be rescued by Pedro Pascal. Er, Joel…

Well, theoretically it starts before Ellie can even remember. Apparently as a kid, Ellie was a biter from hell.
Ironic in the world she grew up in.
It’s not something she really thinks about. Hell, there used to be times with Riley where they’d sit on one of their beds and read or work or whatever, and if Riley’s arm or hand or, once, ankle, was close enough, Ellie would gnaw on it as a joke until they ended up on the floor, wrestling.
So, whatever. Some people love with gentle words and little gifts and some people bite.
or,
Ellie and Joel navigate the first few months in Jackson. A story told in the gentlest of bite marks.

I cannot handle Joel's soft voice when talking to Ellie.
When he asks, "Are you okay?" after Sam's death.
How gently he says "it's me" when calming her down after David.
His little "no, it's fine" when Ellie apologises for being quiet in Episode 9.
His reassuring "I won't" when she asks him not to scare the giraffe.
Cannot handle it.
If they keep in the birthday present scene and his worried "I do okay"? I am not going to make it.

The Last of Us : S1 Finale
an analysis of Joel and his dedication to Ellie's mental health
Tumblr media
Let's discuss once again my love for Joel Miller, and how I would defend him until the Earth burnt into ash.
So we start the finale off, seeing the results of trauma we saw last episode affect Ellie. She's disassociating. She's spiraling. She's getting lost inside herself.
What do we have to pull her out? JOEL.
He is there, DISTRACTING her. Forcing her out of the hole she's stuck in.
Showing her 'hey I got the pasta in a can you and I ate that one time you mentioned that you really liked!'
Tumblr media
ALSO he found a GAME and grabbed it, 'hey have you ever played this game? If you're gonna beat me at anything I know it'll be this game.'
We are in an apocalyptic situation and he immediately grabs the game because he thinks it could be fun, why?
BECAUSE despite everything she's still a CHILD.
Continuing to keep conversation with her, constantly asking her questions to keep her focused on ANYTHING but what her mind has going on. He doesn't know the extent of what happened, she's not told him.
But he knows that if it's bad enough to affect her in this way, he's gonna try his best to keep her from spiraling into a dark place. Why?
Because he's been in a dark place too, but nobody was there to pull him out.
He was alone. We clearly have seen the effects of that play out every episode, and he shared it with her as well. How dark that got for him, that he couldn't see the light anymore.
He wants to make sure Ellie isn't alone in whatever she's going through, he's gonna FIGHT to keep her safe. Even if that means picking at her, forcing her to answer questions and listen to his stories.

Joel has had such an intense special place in my heart for a long time and this show has just made it worse.

First time Ellie calls Joel "Dad" happens more or less like this, in a normal night, normal week, normal year of their life in Jackson (yes, they found a cure, no, nothing of the last episode happened):
"Time to sleep, Ellie." Joel says.
"But I'm not tired!" She yawns. Truth to be told, she fell asleep on the sofa half an hour ago, watching a quite old tv show.
"Yes you are, baby girl."
She rolls her eyes but smiles, while getting up.
"Fine, but I really wasn't tired."
"Yes, yes," Joel laughs. "Goodnight, little peanut." He says, kissing her hair while she hugs him tightly.
"Goodnight, Dad."
Ellie says it with a small voice, running to the stairs a second later. Joel freezes in the middle of the leaving room, wide eyes and painful heartbeat.
Joel spends that night crying in his bed, because it's the first time someone calls him "Dad" in twenty years.
The next morning, Ellie sees his puffy red eyes but says nothing. She just hugs him tightly, like the night before, and say:
"Good morning, Dad."
