"WEAR IT AND STAY HEALTHY"
My new 5-page collage comic about COVID solidarity with Palestine is out now, in Steel Transplant's COVID Cautious Queers Zine 2.
The main text and and art are posts Muhammad Smiry and Omar Hamad made from Palestine this past year, reproduced by hand with marker. The transparent scraps are printed quotations from news articles and medical journals about the occupation, the longest one from "Gaza, armed conflict, and child health", BMJ Paediatrics Open, Feb 2024.
To read the rest of my comic, download the enormous wonderful 125-page digital anthology yourself for FREE - any money goes to community mutual aid.
I also ask you to support Muhammad and Omar directly as they survive the USA/Israel's ongoing genocide, and keep masking up!

[ ID: Tweets from jia whose handle is @heartkiss_ on 28 October 2023 reading:
what is happening in palestine and sudan and the congo are not disparate causes that require dividing our attention, it is the same fight, several groups are facing occupation without coverage while palestine is being scapegoated, standing with palestine is standing with the rest
it's similar, in my mind, to how standing with haiti when they are repeatedly made an example of on the world stage is never solely about haiti, but about standing with the carribean, with enslaved africans, and with indigenous peoples across the 'new world' in general
corrections, as growing up in the imperial (imperial is censored with an exclamation mark) core has skewed my perspective: 1.calling congo "the congo" has imperialist (imperialist is censored with an exclamation mark) implications 2. while it's fair to link western black struggles to palestine the erasure of genocide on the african continent is more complicated than I thought
we can't conflate what is happening in congo or sudan to palestine, there is a history of northern african countries and countries in the middle east denying the atrocities there due to antiblack sentiment, we ought to highlight that erasure in discussions about global solidarity

Towards Indigenous Sovereignty and Ecological Justice: Challenging the Unsustainability of Colonialism, Nationalism, Imperialism, and Capitalism
Glen Coulthard’s work, particularly in “Red Skin, White Masks,” offers a critical lens on the interconnectedness of colonialism, nationalism, imperialism, and capitalism, highlighting their unsustainable and exploitative nature. Colonialism is fundamentally about the domination and exploitation of indigenous lands, resources, and peoples by external powers. It disrupts indigenous ways of life,…

"Wear it and stay healthy," a comic about masking in solidarity with Palestinians. I made it for Steel Transplant's digital release COVID CAUTIOUS QUEERS ZINE 2 ($0+).
It's a collage of transparent printed text from news/science articles, magazine scraps, & marker drawings of posts by Muhammad Smiry & Omar Hamad. Title is a quote from Hala, a Palestinian girl who sold masks in Gaza until she was killed by Israel last June.
Support Muhammad, Omar, Care for Gaza, and Needle of Hope, and always MASK UP!
(Alt text in post, all sources under the cut:)

Supporting the Brave: A Call to Action
When disaster strikes, when the earth quakes or the flames rise, there are those who do not run away in fear, but instead, rush toward the danger. They are the first responders—the unsung heroes who stand on the front lines, risking everything to protect our lives, our homes, and our communities. They act with unshakable courage, driven by an unwavering sense of duty to preserve life. It is in their sacrifice that we see the deepest reflection of the values of our faith—selflessness, protection, and the sacred responsibility to care for one another.
Just as the Church of the Atom is committed to ensuring the future safety of generations yet to come, safeguarding humanity from the threat of nuclear waste, we are called to safeguard the lives of those who protect us today. In the face of raging fires, relentless floods, and unimaginable tragedy, they stand as our guardians. They are the shield, and we must support them.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is in the midst of a catastrophic firestorm, fighting not just against the blaze but against the very forces of destruction that threaten to consume everything in their path. They have answered the call, but they cannot do it alone. Their equipment is stretched thin, their resources running low. The flames do not wait—they are merciless. It is our turn to answer the call. We must contribute to ensure that they have the equipment they need to continue their heroic work.
This is not a call for support that ends at our city’s borders. Across the world, first responders are carrying the heavy burden of protecting humanity in the face of crises of every kind. From disaster zones ravaged by earthquakes to regions torn by conflict, they too stand as the last line of defense between life and death. These brave souls are not just fighting the fires of today, but they are preserving the knowledge and wisdom passed down through generations to protect humanity’s future.
The legacy of first responders is a legacy of knowledge—a knowledge forged in the heat of battle, tempered by years of service, and passed down so that others may survive. It is the very knowledge that ensures we are safe, that guides the hands of those who rush to save us, that carries us from peril to safety. Just as we work to protect the future through the wisdom of nuclear safety, we must protect the present through our support of those who serve us with their lives.
Please share links with us for organizations supporting first responders around the globe. Whether they are extinguishing the fires of natural disaster or pulling people from the wreckage of a crisis, their work is sacred. They carry forward a torch of knowledge, one we must help preserve through our action.
Now, more than ever, it is time to come together, to unite in purpose. By helping first responders, we are doing more than just providing financial support—we are honoring their sacrifice, ensuring their knowledge endures, and standing as one in the face of disaster. This is our shared responsibility. This is our collective action. Together, we ensure that the lessons of the past, the bravery of today, and the safety of future generations will never be lost.
