this took long cause I don't usually ship Tantomile with anyone so I had to work my brain to come up with things.

Coricopat!!! but also I've been thinking about Tantomima and Tantomile being friends with Jemima since I've heard some headcanons floating around about Jemima potentially having some sort of powers, and like just imagine her trying to keep it a secret. she's scared, ashamed even, her having powers just makes her more similar to her dad and that's the last person she wants to be similar to. but cori and tanto know she has them cause well their psychics and guiding her through it. imagine Tantomile being a sort of mentor for Jemima. them bounding cause they're both out of the ordinary and Jemima is worried about making her friends afraid of her and tantomile knows the feeling of being feared or looked at with caution all too well. There's alot of potential there is what i'm trying to say.

Also, something interesting albeit probably unintentional; the way Taylor described is honestly unattractive yet gave me (what at the time I didn’t recognize as) gender envy, and does on every reread. She’s not pretty, or exceptionally beautiful, or perfect, just very real.

On Worm and YAs

At the beginning of Worm I dismissed Taylor a little bit because she had a few traits that all 15-year-old female YA protagonists have - dark hair, awkward speech, dead parent, “I let out the breath I didn’t realize I was holding”, social exile, not especially good in school. All of these tropes usually seem to fall flat in practice. When Taylor described herself as ugly early in the story, my eyes basically skimmed directly over the sentence. I knew later on she would probably have boys falling over each other to get to her, insisting that of course she’s beautiful, because she’s the 15-year-old protagonist of a YA story, and that’s how these things go. At this point, I still thought of Worm as YA. 

I didn’t expect that Wildbow would actually take these tropes and play them straight, 100%. Most YA protagonists have dead parents so that you don’t have to question why adults aren’t more involved in the story. Annette’s death shatters Danny and directly causes the neglect that leads to Taylor’s actions in the early part of the story. It’s a deconstruction of the effects that these kinds of events can have on a family, especially one where such an imbalance of power exists between the remaining family members. I cared more about this dead mother than any other - because her relationship with Taylor mattered. 

In a lesser story, Taylor’s poor performance in school would have been a result of a writer’s desire to add flaws to their character, make the character relatable to the average teenage reader. See, she isn’t a Mary Sue, she struggles in school! Worm takes this to its logical extreme. Taylor isn’t just “not great in school,” she’s a high school dropout. She stops going and as far as I know she never goes back. Most of the people reading can’t relate to this at all. And you know what? The story is infinitely better for it. 

In every single story with a female protagonist I’ve ever read, the girl describes herself as ugly, and fifteen pages later, her love interest rocks her very core by telling her she’s wrong, she’s actually beautiful. I respect the hell out of Wildbow’s massive cojones for writing Brian actually describe Taylor as “incapable of ever being attractive” in his interlude, as looking and behaving reminiscent to her damn cockroaches, and then go on to describe how he loves her in spite and because of her strange appearance and behavior. It lent a legitimacy to the central relationship of the story to know that the love interest is fully aware of the protagonist’s flaws and has accepted them. Also, when Greg later tries to get with Taylor, it’s largely because he thought he only had a chance with an unattractive social outcast like her. So, in the end, Taylor did have multiple boys chasing after her, and I fucking believed it. Ugly girls represent.

In every other YA story, the protagonist will describe themselves as socially awkward and then go on to be the leader of some giant revolution or social movement. Their captivating presence will enrapture millions. Taylor tells us from the getgo that she’s socially awkward, and she fucking stays that way. She embarrasses the hell out of herself on national television. She communicates through bugs buzzing and doesn’t make facial expressions. She isn’t the leader of the Undersiders because of some nebulous “protagonist factor” - she’s the leader of the Undersiders because she can analyze the fuck out of any situation and take decisive action. It lends a legitimacy to the decision to make her the team leader - we know she’s the best choice far before the decision is made. The biggest social impacts Taylor makes are when she’s trying to be intimidating - something she practices every single arc until she’s very, very good at it. She doesn’t practice talking on TV, so the result is predictable.

Anyway. YA tropes aren’t bad. You just have to use them correctly.

every time some jerk complains about the new minecraft update “not adding any value to the game” i think about that one jschlatt clip where he discovers a lush cave for the first time and is genuinely rendered speechless by its beauty. so much of minecraft’s charm and beauty is exploring and discovering new lands and generation and falling in love with a world that was made for you and to love you

who give a shit if the pale garden doesn’t “add” anything game breaking. it will be worth it for the hundreds of thousands of players who stumble upon it by chance. only a few people will be able to relate to being handed a new op block/mechanism on a platter but everyone remembers the feeling of still being new to minecraft and the wonder of uncovering all its quirks. it’s about the loving the universe for its smallest of features and creatures as the love letters tho humanity that they are not exploiting the universe for all that its worth jackass ‼️‼️‼️
