The way Veilguard approaches the concept of leadership is so interesting, actually. Because in previous installments, leadership is something that just happens to the main character. The Warden is volunteered for a leadership position by Alistair because he doesn't want it and also for the video game mechanic of "you are the main character." Hawke leads presumably out of sheer force of personality--how else could they hold all those disparate personalities together and actually get anything done? The Inquisitor is made leader due to the magical MacGuffin in their hand, but beyond naming what the Inquisition is for, little of their leadership technique is directly interrogated.
Rook essentially receives field command of the team after being Varric's second for half a year. The uncertainty of that is palpable. This is not someone who's meant to be in direct command, but finds themselves in that position anyway and the narrative is interrogating that. Thoroughly, even. Solas asking what their role here is, the way they have to mediate the group, multiple conversations about the actual mechanics of being a leader--it's very interesting, because previous protagonists unequivocally were leaders but this is the first time it really feels like I, as a player, have access to the levers that control what that leadership looks like. How someone tries to keep a crew functional and working together and make hard calls while trying to minimize the pain it will cause the rest of the team (and often failing at even that). It's a fledgling attempt at leadership in the worst possible moment and you can feel that. More than anything, it makes the Veilguard feel like an exploration of the work it actually takes to tie a crew like this together and make it possible for them to face world-ending odds, and I'm really enjoying the experience

I think what bothers me about the live-action HTTYD movie as someone who was VIOLENTLY obsessed with it as a kid and considers it life changing is that a lot of the elements from the behind the scenes animations that happened to work just. Won’t hit as different.
Like wdym toothless’ eye being open as he’s tied down wasn’t intentional, and was actually a mistake in the animation?? What do you mean toothless’ hesitation before meeting Hiccup’s hand was actually an error? What do you mean artists researched air dynamics and how wings would react in wind just to make an accurate dragon model?? Stuff like that made the first movie so beautiful, and I have doubts the new one will hit the same. Nostalgia may be a factor in this of course, but because of how recent it will be little animated errors that made a movie unique and obviously human-made won’t be there and it makes me a little sad.

i think a fundamental flaw behind the devil's minion dynamic arguments - not all, but a good chunk of them - is that people consistently forget that both of the characters involved are fucking crazy. especially where the tv adaptation is concerned
like, 1970s era, sure, fine, Armand is a dom bottom, we know this, whatever. post-dubai, however, they cannot be distilled into a straightforward d/s dynamic, there's no way. at that point, they're both immortal, Armand cannot read Daniel's mind anymore, Daniel wrecked his marriage and Armand made him, etc etc etc so my personal theory is, their situation begins with a few rocky swings but eventually ends up something like this:
Armand is bossy and demanding and yes that means he's in charge - except Daniel considers letting someone get away with being a little bitch a dominant thing to do - however he also will do pretty much anything Armand wants if Armand is insane/feral/cute enough about it (which is all the time) but he thinks that doing stuff for other people means that he's in charge (bc old man provider brain) - except Armand thinks that being allowed to be a bitch is reserved for the master of the house or at the very least the favourite concubine - but at the same time he does want to be spoiled and treated like a silly little puppy sooooo bad and he will 10000% take advantage of the opportunity - but also Daniel will call him boss sarcastically and Armand is too autistic to not take it at face value. that is not his fault but it will definitely impact a few things

i think logan hillier did such an excellent job voicing istvan toth, not only within the emotional range but also in the intonation, to the point where i can read any fic featuring istvan dialogue and very clearly imagine his voice. i think his extensive background in theater really shines through in his KCD2 performance and i'm very grateful he's the one who ended up voicing istvan toth. it's impossible to imagine anyone else doing a better job at it

I'm really feeling like lucky day would have been better if think tank were targeting the doctor specifically, rather than unit. because the metaphor really doesn't come off well with unit - whereas the doctor is certainly flawed, but not in the same ways that make unit such a clumsy fit for the narrative they were trying to tell. making it about the doctor almost opens up more of an opportunity to criticise unit, because they could have made the point that he associates with this mysterious military association with no oversight.
it also keeps the throughline of conrad encountering the doctor more focused, and gives ruby's story more space to breathe. the idea of ruby fixating on her travels and ultimately understanding her trauma is really interesting, and pretty unique for new who. as is the way conrad shifts from someone she can trust and process her experiences with to someone who purposefully re-traumatises her. again, ruby deciding at the end to step away is great, but it would have been a cleaner storyline if she'd expressed that to her family rather than kate, given that we'd seen them being concerned about her focus on the doctor earlier. the set-up is engaging, but it just ends up getting undercut by the sharp swerve into the story being about unit rather than the doctor.

Still fully anticipating a Yor arc upcoming and the maths are mathing, is what I'm saying
Tumblr media
(More seriously, it gave me vibes from 58.2 when Twilight and Bond save Daisy the pup from the fire, and Twilight gives his "You have to take care of yourself because there's someone waiting for you at home" speech - more specifically to the theory that 58.1-58.2 are the concluding chapters for the Cruise Arc*, and so is in direct dialogue with Yor's speech "Even if it means living a life that could end at any moment... even if it means leaving the Forger family," recommitment to self-sacrifice... Do you see the dots?)
*I alas don't have access to this theory: I read it summarised somewhere (reddit?) that it's a popular theory on the Japanese side of fandom and haven't been able to shake it since. But if anyone has links, pls drop 'em!

Lots of debate on the timeline of events in the outsiders and ages fitting into that, but according to Hinton Pony was born July 22, and he'd been 14 for about a month (line in the movie) when the main events kick off. That would put the murder during late August, which is exactly when that schoolyear would be starting. They only hide out for 5 days, which would put them at early September when they end up back home.
The rumble, Johnny's death, Dally's death, and Pony's concussion fainting happens the night after they get home.
Ponyboy comes to after 3 days, then ends up on bedrest for another week, where he displays delusional thought.
The Juvenile Court hearing presumably occurs shortly after that bedrest, as Pony is still not considered fit to testify on the murder, placing it squarely into the month of September.
It's not super clear how long the depressive episode lasts for Pony, but it's long enough that he is failing his classes and Syme is offering to bring him up to a C. Recalling my high school days, overall grades for fall semester were usually evident by like mid October, so I would give Pony 2-3 weeks, maybe a full month before Syme reaches out.
However, we also know Pony was procrastinating on his assignment, it's part of Darry's nagging iirc, so that + the theme being a final project for the semester, it was probably due mid-late November/maaaayyybe early December.
This is where ages come in bc some of the ages we have from the TV Show Bible don't align with the story's events happening in August.
However.
We know that we are reading Ponyboy's theme. It ends cyclical to the beginning, and there's also evident effort on Ponyboy's end to avoid writing profanity into his recollection. He's 14, been to Hell and back, and also procrastinated on his essay. That is to say, I'd believe it if the argument was made that for some of the surviving characters, he just mentioned how old they were at the time of writing.
Side note, too, that the musical does corroborate the main events happening in late August imo, as it explicitly ties the Curtis Parents' deaths to Darry's birthday; Darry was born January 5, and they died 8 months before the story took place; 8 months from January is obviously September, technically. However. Looking at the calendar year for 1967 (the musical is bumped up 2 years), Darry's birthday fell on the first Thursday of January. If Pony's birthday is July 22nd and it's been a month (not confirmed in the musical to have been a month, but confirmed that he would be 15 next July), the Friday Night Drive-In encounter would have been August 25 (literally the first week of school), 7 months and 3 weeks after the crash; technically not 8 months, but extremely close. If we want to push it closer and move the events a week later, then the drive in would have happened September 1.
In conclusion, my proposed book timeline, cross-referenced with calendars and given school start dates:
Tuesday, January 5, 1965—Darry's Birthday, potentially also the death of Curtis Parents
Thursday, July 22, 1965—Ponyboy's 14th birthday
Thursday, August 26, 1965—Pony gets jumped
Friday, August 27, 1965—Pony goes to the drive-in, Johnny kills Bob (technically this happens in the wee hours of Saturday, but the jumping that led to it was a consequence of the drive in so I'm lumping them)
Saturday, August 28-Wednesday, September 1, 1965— (technically the actual time of Bob's murder) + Windrixville hideout + fire + Hospital reunion
Thursday, September 2, 1965—Rumble + Johnny's death + Dally's Death + Pony's concussion
Friday, September 3-Sunday, September 5, 1965—Pony in feverish delirium
Monday, September 6-Sunday, September 12, 1965—Pony on Bedrest
Monday, September 13, 1965—Juvenile Court
Tuesday, September 14, 1965-Depressive fugue begins
Monday, October 11 or 18, 1965—Mr Syme alerts Ponyboy of his failing grade+presents semester's final project in the form of a personal theme.
Mid November, 1965—theme is written
