Listening to the August 11th entry I got once again so mad! at most adaptations getting the story and characters so wrong! What do you mean Lucy “wanted” or “deserved” Dracula attacking her? The poor baby girl was under hypnosis and shivering when Mina found her on the bench, not to mention mentally exhausted already by the dark influences before.
What do you mean Mina is a “passive” Victorian Lady? Girl is a working-class independent woman who instead of having a relaxing summer constantly takes care of her bff, saves her on multiple occasions from bigger harm, keeps a cold head while racing in the middle of the night across the whole town to save her friend, and knows how to take care from dangers when walking alone home in the dark. Not to mention her own heart being full of worry for her beloved fiancé as well.
#when ever I read a 19th century novel I am kinda shocked how more “modern” it is than most things today#judging by some books and movies one would say we have it all backwards#having strong yet feminine heroines?#having brave yet emotionally open men?#19th century literature got it#things i like#books#dracula daily#bram stoker´s dracula

The Slave Market
Artist: Jean-Léon Gérôme (French, 1824-1904)
Genre: History Painting
Date Created: 1866
Period: Academic Art
Location: Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, MA
A naked woman at center and man at far right are shown in a public courtyard, as prospective slave owners inspect their bodies. Meticulous details like the figures’ clothing, as well as the style of the surrounding architecture, evoke locales such as Egypt and Turkey, where Gérôme spent several months traveling and sketching. Constructed both from imagination and observation, this dehumanizing scene portrays Islamic society as strange, violent, and depraved. Such paintings appealed to France’s assumptions of its own moral superiority as it expanded its colonial empire across North Africa.

Court Suit
c.1810
France
This three piece suit is exemplary of skilled French embroidery and the silhouette of men's court wear during the time of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). Bonaparte revived the importance of court traditions when he crowned himself Emperor in 1804. This revival necessitated the recreation of acceptable court dress, which had been defunct since the elaborate and costly court of Louis XVI (1754-1793) prior to the French Revolution. The intricate embroidery pattern is intriguingly mimicked between the waistcoat and coat, reinforcing its status as a full suit. (The MET)

“Tiffany Aching was lying on her stomach by the river tickling trout. She liked to hear them laugh. It came up in bubbles.” —Terry Pratchett, The Wee Free Men
As soon as I saw The Little Fishergirl by Lucien Pissarro, I thought of Tiffany tickling trout and listening to their bubbling laughter.
The Little Fishergirl Lucien Pissarro 1894
Here’s another variation of the Tiffany Aching version at the top of the post:
