It’s Girl Scout Day! March 12, 2024, is the 112th birthday of Girl Scouts in the United States, and to celebrate, we’re sharing a lithograph of the Girl Scout alumnae who became NASA astronauts.
Girl Scouts learn to work together, build community, embrace adventurousness and curiosity, and develop leadership skills—all of which come in handy as an astronaut. For example, former Scouts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir worked together to make history on Oct. 18, 2019, when they performed the first all-woman spacewalk.
Pam Melroy is one of only two women to command a space shuttle and became NASA’s deputy administrator on June 21, 2021.
Nicole Mann was the first Indigenous woman from NASA to go to space when she launched to the International Space Station on Oct. 5, 2022. Currently, Loral O’Hara is aboard the space station, conducting science experiments and research.
Participating in thoughtful activities in leadership and STEM in Girl Scouts has empowered and inspired generations of girls to explore space, and we can’t wait to meet the future generations who will venture to the Moon and beyond.
Make sure to follow us on Tumblr for your regular dose of space!

Celebrating international day of women and girls in STEM because in 2025 there are still men who will say to other men behind your back that you only got certain opportunities because you're a girl and/or because of your looks and/or because other men are attracted to you

getting over your morning grogginess
hydrate: starting your day with a glass of water is essential. after hours of not drinking, your body needs rehydration. it can help kick-start your metabolism and make you feel more awake.
stretch or exercise: engaging in a few light stretches or a brief walk can get your blood flowing and increase oxygen to your brain. it’s a great way to shake off sleepiness and energize your body.
fresh air: stepping outside for fresh air can be invigorating. natural light helps regulate your body’s internal clock and boosts your mood, while the change in environment can stimulate your senses.
caffeine: a cup of coffee or tea can give you a nice energy boost. caffeine stimulates your central nervous system, helping you feel more alert. just be mindful not to overdo it, as too much can make you jittery.
cool shower: a quick cool or lukewarm shower can wake up your senses. the sudden change in temperature can be invigorating and help you feel more refreshed.
i hope this is helpful!! 🫶nene

Really want to make a pre-surak au thing that opens on these two “warrior” Vulcans fighting it out on sehlats in gaudy armor and “traditional” weapons, just REALLY leaning into the “pre Surak is pre-technology” warlike tribal Vulcans in skimpy clothing misconception
And then the scene zooms out and we start to see bleachers and hear cheering/jeering and vendors who wander the crowds selling snacks. There’s a drone wizzing overhead to film wide dynamic shots of the fight. Cameras flashing.
Cuts to this overly-enthused announcer narrating the whole thing, and we zoom out again to see this being watched on a fancy flatscreen in a fancy modern livingroom by a couple of equally enthused Vulcan girls- it’s basically wwe
(And of course, this would be where our au!Spock enters, seeing the tv and scoffing “can’t believe you’re watching this nonsense” he starts watching anyway)

Louisiana students who solved the Pythagorean theorem discover nine more solutions to it
Tumblr media
Two New Orleans students who solved the Pythagorean theorem using trigonometry have had their discovery confirmed by the math community after their findings were published in the American Mathematical Monthly this week, solidifying their proofs. And if solving Pythagoras' theorem wasn't challenging enough, the young women, now college freshmen, also discovered nine more solutions to the problem. Ne'Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson, former St. Mary's Academy students, presented their discovery to the American Mathematical Society in Atlanta back in March of 2023. This October, their solutions were peer-reviewed and thoroughly investigated to confirm what many in the math community never could have imagined — the theorem could be solved by using trigonometry.  Many papers submitted to the mathematics journal are often turned down. But after careful consideration and scrutiny, Jackson and Johnson's paper was approved for publication. Jackson and Johnson found the first proof to the equation during their senior year of high school while working tirelessly over their holiday break to solve a bonus question in a math contest. Once deemed impossible, the two students overcame a failure of logic referred to as circular reasoning. But, in their new study, Johnson and Jackson went even further, providing nine other proofs, or solutions to the theorem.  Since the foundation of trigonometry relies on the fact that the Pythagorean Theorem is true, the mathematics community believed using trigonometry to prove the theorem would be unworkable. But it wasn't.  ... Their findings are testament to the idea that dedication pays off.
