anyways the actual best X Files episodes in order by season

1.01 Pilot (obviously)

1.13 Beyond the Sea (basically Silence of the Lambs as an X Files episode but Gillian Anderson's performance is insanely compelling)

1.20 Darkness Falls (spooky PNW forest vibes/arguably the best use of British Columbia as a filming location in the whole series)

2.20 Humbug (this is the one that gets closest to what I'd say the show is about at its core)

3.17 Pusher (early Vince Gilligan episode; all of the core themes of Breaking Bad are there in this episode if you look closely)

3.20 Jose Chung's From Outer Space (probably the best Darin Morgan episode? I'm partial to Humbug and there's a case for Clyde Bruckman but it's not a personal favorite of mine)

3.22 Quagmire (lake monster! the conversation on the rock! also RIP Queequeg)

4.02 Home (furthest the X Files ever went into straight-up horror)

4.13 Never Again (Scully tattoo scene)

5.12 Bad Blood (it’s a classic for a reason)

5.18 The Pine Bluff Variant (Mulder goes undercover in a right-wing militia; oddly compelling)

6.02 Drive (Vince Gilligan and Bryan Cranston)

6.04 and 6.05 Dreamland I and II (the Mulder and Morris Fletcher body swap)

6.19 The Unnatural (oddly sweet baseball episode written+directed by David Duchovny with my favorite opening and closing scenes in the series)

6.20 Three of a Kind (Lone Gunmen + giddy intoxicated Scully. the potential that the Lone Gunmen spinoff show mostly failed to live up to.)

7.19 Hollywood AD (another David Duchovny writing/directing credit + the Mulder/Scully/Skinner bathtub scene)

after S7 who cares (I do actually like Robert Patrick as Doggett but S8 and S9 don't hold up). as you can tell from this list I'm mostly interested in Darin Morgan and Vince Gilligan's visions of the show and the Mulder/Scully dynamic and couldn't care less about Chris Carter or the myth arc generally.

also honorable mention to 6.15 Arcadia which isn't amazing but I'm a sucker for the Mulder and Scully undercover as a married couple in suburban SoCal thing
