For the drabble game 13. “Who did this?” with Mario & DK if this is okay? :) Otherwise you can also choose another character if you don't want to write DK. :)
(Set in Smash Ultimate Universe)
Mutterings, whispers, exclamations of confusion surrounded two as they made their way down the street. "You sure you don't wanna go to the infirmary?" The taller one asked. The shorter one shook his head and let out a groan at the dizzy spell the action caused. "Don't wanna make a scene." he muttered. Luigi looked around at the people who were watching them. "I think it's too late for that." he said. Mario stumbled and Luigi caught him before he could fall. "C'mon, infirmary." he insisted. Giving in, the older brother let himself be led towards the bright white building with the giant red cross atop it. It wasn't much later that he found himself laying back on a hospital bed as Luigi fussed with the stiff, over-bleached pillow behind his head. The fussing stopped as someone knocked on the glass door before entering. A Toad in a doctor's coat walked in, holding a clipboard and papers. "You've gotten into quite a mess here, Mario." the doctor's tone was like a parent scolding a child. "Broken arm, multiple bruises and lacerations, severe sprain to the right ankle." He peered over his glasses. "You do know fighting outside of a match is against the rules, right?" "Not like I started it." Mario grumbled back. "Then who did?" the doctor questioned without missing a beat. Mario refused to answer, instead looking away. Luigi sighed. "He won't tell me, either, doc." Shaking his head, the doctor turned away. "Fine. I'll have someone come in and patch you up the rest of the way. And no matches for a week, you need to stay off that ankle."
As he got ready to leave a booming voice was heard in the hall. "Where is he?! They said he was hurt!" "Hoo boy." Luigi leaned out the doorway. "In here, DK." he called. Pushing past the hospital staff the ape nearly burst into the little room. "Where's Mar-" he stopped, his anger freezing to fear when he saw the beaten figure in the bed. "The hell..." he breathed as he went over. "Mario, what happened? Did Wario do this?!" his voice rose with his fury. Mario cringed as he shifted. He glanced at his little brother. "Give us a bit?" his request was acknowledged with a nod and Luigi slipped out, closing the door behind him. If anyone could get the truth out of Mario, Donkey Kong knew how. "It wasn't Wario." Mario groaned, slumping back as he gave up on trying to find a more comfortable position. "Who did this?" his friend's voice was low, fury boiling beneath the soft tone. "It's my fault, they started bad mouthin' Weege an'-" "Don't give me that!" DK snapped. "You don't get to blame yourself! Who did this?"
The sleek metal shone, the blade singing through the air as the tall figure practiced in the open ground outside the arena. Other fighters gave him a wide berth, not wanting to provoke his wrath. He was so caught up in his practice that he didn't sense the figure that was glaring at him. It hit him as a rare surprise then as the blade was knocked out of his hands and he was pinned down, large fingers wrapping around his neck as Donkey Kong snarled. "W-What is the meaning of this?" Sephiroth found his voice shaking from the tension on his throat. "You, you hurt Mario! He's in the infirmary because of you!" DK made sure his voice was loud and clear, drawing the attention of those around them. It worked. Other fighters began to gather. "You teased him, you knew he'd fight you if you talked crap about his brother!" DK continued. "Fighting outside an arena battle?" Peach uttered. "That's low, even for a villain." Wario snorted. Others began to gather, murmurs growing louder. "Teasing someone so they'd fight, bad sportsmanship, I say." Marth added. There was agreement and Ryu stepped forward. "Sounds like we need to teach our friend here we don't tolerate bullying. How bout it, Hero?" A nod from the nearby Dragon Quest fighter and he motioned to the arena. Everyone backed up as a tall, imposing figure stepped forward and reaching out, grabbed Sephiroth by the collar, easily lifting him as DK moved away. "Play dirty in your home world, little man. Not here." Ganondorf's eyes narrowed as he spoke and he swung around to the crowd, holding Sephiroth up high. "I say we teach this newcomer the rules, all who wish to join, meet in the arena!" His declaration was met with cheers as some fighters followed him. All the while the Gerudo King kept a tight hold on his target, dragging him along.
DK watched as the fighters left, Ryu making sure to grab Sephiroth's Masamune, giving DK a wink as he did. "I'll make sure he gets this back, after a few rounds without it." Left stunned by the actions of the others, the Prince of the Jungle Kingdom wandered over to a bench, feeling lost. A soft voice drew him from his thoughts. "Mr. Donkey Kong?" He looked beside him to see a yellow dog watching him with concern. "Are you all right?" "Yeah, thanks, Isabelle." "And Mr. Mario?" she had a habit of using titles like 'mister' and 'sir' out of respect, a trait many fighters found endearing, DK included. "He needs some time, but he'll be okay, I think." "That's good." she began towards the arena and he held out his hand. "Wait, where're you goin'?" She giggled as she looked back at him. "To help out! I'm very good at teaching people things." she said, a glint in her eyes.

Roleplaying Races 14: Shobhad
Though many erroneously assume that D&D and subsequent games like Pathfinder were exclusively inspired by the works of Tolkien, in truth tabletop gaming has been influence not just by the wide gamut of fantasy fiction, but also science fiction as well.
Notable today is the Barsoom series, also known as the John Carter of Mars series of pulp sci-fi stories and novels written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, a sci-fi series in which the titular hero is transported to Mars an encounters the many strange beings that live there, including the Tharks, also known as Green Martians, massive greed humanoids notable for their four arms, lanky yet powerful builds, and tribal lifestyle. Other such beings like the white apes of mars would serve as inspiration for fantasy gaming’s girallons, but it is the Tharks that inspired today’s playable ancestry, the shobhad!
Heavily inspired by the thark, the shobhad first appeared in the Distant Worlds book as the first look into the solar system that Golarion resides within, and as a healthy injection of pulp sci-fi com complement the already present amount mostly concentrated in Numeria.
The shobhads hail from Akiton, which is heavily inspired not just by the real planet Mars, but also by pulp science fiction stories about Mars, ranging from the shobhad themselves, girallons being from there, red-skinned humans, as well as beyond Burrough’s influences with figures like the contemplatives of Ashok.
The shobhad themselves actually underwent a facelift after their initial appearance. While initially looking like brutish blue-skinned humanoids with four arms, shobhad were later re-imagined in Starfinder and later Pathfinder 2e to be closer to their thark inspiration, having pronounced facial shapes and powerful tusks alongside the four arms and wider variety of skin tones.
Living on a harsh world, shobhads prize strength and resilience above all, and place a strong focus on personal honor and the ritualized ways in which one can improve their status. They view those living in permanent settlements as weak and lacking the identity that personal accomplishment can grant one even after death. As such, they are disdainful of “soft folk” and rarely extend to them the same honorable practices they use with their kin, instead remorselessly culling them if they prove a problem to the tribe, unless of course they manage to impress them.
Of course, there are some outcasts that act as mercenaries, venturing into settled places to offer their services, though this is clearly an exception, and looked down upon by the shobhad.
It should be noted that these mighty giants are not truly evil, but their harsh way of life leaves little room for compassion that they cannot afford, such as to strangers that they feel cannot contribute in a meaningful way.
Shobhads are large, strong, and insightful, and surprisingly nimble for their size.
They are also raised as warriors, and learn how best to roll with and avoid incoming blows.
Their natural ferocity also makes them hard to put down, letting them fight past pain where others would be brought low.
They also prove to bey surprisingly stealthy and keen hunters as well.
Physically athletic, they can leap great heights and move across the desert with ease.
Their four arms are not just for show either, and they can fully utilize them while wielding objects.
Now, the shobhad is difficult to justify using unless your campaign takes place on Akiton or a similar Mars-like world, but if you have the opportunity to do so you won’t be disappointed by this ancestry. Their large size and strength bonus from size does mean that they can be excellent melee combatants, and their wisdom makes them a good choice for most divine classes like druid, cleric, and especially warpriest. However, a sleeper hit you might not think about is their association with their shobhad longrifles, making potential sniper gunslingers and other gun-focused builds a possibility, albeit one that will require some replacement if your campaign functions in normal gravity. Honestly there’s no class in which they find themselves lacking, though even with their stalker ability the dex and stealth penalty are an uphill battle if you want to build them as a stealth character.
That does it for today, but we’re only halfway through the week, and not done with big burly ancestries at all. Tune in tomorrow for more!

Biden gives order for Chinese balloon shootdown (AP) President Joe Biden said on Saturday that he ordered U.S. officials to shoot down the suspected Chinese spy balloon earlier this week and that national security leaders decided the best time for the operation was when the it got over water. Fighter jets shot down the giant white balloon off the Carolina coast after it traversed sensitive military sites across North America and became the latest flashpoint in tensions between Washington and Beijing. The public disclosure of the balloon this week prompted the cancellation of a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Beijing scheduled for Sunday for talks aimed at reducing U.S.-China tensions. The Chinese government on Saturday sought to play down the cancellation.
582,462 and Counting (NYT) They go into the streets in search of data. Peeking behind dumpsters, shining flashlights under bridges, rustling a frosted tent to see if anyone was inside. This is what it takes to count the people in America who don’t have a place to live. To get a number, however flawed, that describes the scope of a deeply entrenched problem and the country’s progress toward fixing it. Last year, the Biden administration laid out a goal to reduce homelessness by 25 percent by 2025. The problem increasingly animates local politics, with ambitious programs to build affordable housing getting opposition from homeowners who say they want encampments gone but for the solution to be far from their communities. Across the country, homelessness is a subject in which declarations of urgency outweigh measurable progress. Officially called the Point-in-Time Count, the annual tally of those who live outside or in homeless shelters takes place in every corner of the country through the last 10 days of January, and over the past dozen years has found 550,000 to 650,000 people experiencing homelessness. The endeavor is far from perfect, advocates note, since it captures no more than a few days and is almost certainly a significant undercount. But it’s a snapshot from which resources flow, and creates a shared understanding of a common problem.
Mount Washington wind chill hits minus-108, snapping U.S. record (Washington Post) The wind chill at the summit of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington dropped to minus-108 degrees Friday, marking what meteorologists and climate scientists say probably is the lowest temperature recorded in the history of the United States, as the Northeast is being battered with dangerously cold air. Videos recorded by the nonprofit Mount Washington Observatory show how the extreme cold and strong winds of more than 100 mph from the Arctic air blast walloped the summit Friday afternoon, and made the mountain with the tallest peak in the Northeast seem like another planet. In fact, the eerie scene atop Mount Washington was slightly colder than the average on Mars this week, according to NASA.
13 dead in Chile amid struggle to contain raging wildfires (AP) At least 13 people were reported dead as of Friday night as a result of the more than 150 wildfires burning across Chile that have destroyed homes and thousands of acres of forest while the South American country is in the midst of a scorching heat wave. As of midday Friday, 151 wildfires were burning throughout Chile, including 65 declared under control. The fires had blazed through more than 14,000 hectares (34,595 acres).
EU Wants To Seal Itself Off from Refugees (Der Spiegel) In the past year, more asylum-seekers arrived in Germany than at any time in the past six years, since the peak of the refugee crisis. According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, 217,774 people filed initial applications for asylum in Germany in 2022, more than twice as many as in 2020, and that’s without counting the more than 1 million refugees who have come from Ukraine. More refugees are arriving in Germany than at any time in recent years, and districts and cities are overwhelmed. But the system for redistributing migrants among EU states is unlikely to be improved anytime soon, with leaders instead increasingly betting on deportations and exclusion. Germany wants to encourage other EU member countries to take in more refugees. But Berlin is pretty much isolated in that stance right now. “Apart from Luxembourg and Portugal, no one else in the EU shares the German approach,” say several EU diplomats. Deportation is the most common theme, whether their home countries (such as Syria and Afghanistan) want the refugees back or not.
Along Ukraine-Belarus border, a war of nerves—and drones (AP) The reconnaissance drones fly several times a day from Ukrainian positions deep inside the thick forest that marches across the border into Belarus, a close Russian ally, scouring sky and land for signs of trouble on the other side. Ukrainian units are monitoring the 1,000-kilometer (650-mile) frontier of marsh and woodland for a possible surprise offensive from the north, a repeat of the unsuccessful Russian thrust toward Kyiv at the start of the war nearly a year ago. “We continuously monitor the enemy from the ground and observe the movement of troops, if they are moving, how many troops, and where they are moving,” the area’s army intelligence unit head said during a press tour this week a few kilometers from the border. The officer only identified himself by his first name, Oleksandr, citing security reasons. Unlike the east with its devastating artillery duels, here in the north it’s largely a war of quadcopters. At times, Oleksandr’s unit detects enemy reconnaissance drones and shoots them down using anti-drone rifles. Or an enemy drone detects a Ukrainian one and tails it, at which point the Ukrainians try to capture and add it to their stock. “We got four of their drones this way recently, and they took two of ours,” Oleksandr said.
The U.S. sends longer-range weapons (Washington Post) A $2.2 billion package of U.S. military aid announced today will, for the first time, allow Ukraine to acquire long-range bombs that can strike targets more than 90 miles away. The Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb uses a rocket motor to boost a 250-pound munition into the air, where it deploys scissor-like wings and glides to its target, guided by satellites. Developed by Boeing and Saab, the weapon is brand-new and has not been fielded by the U.S. military. The package also included more Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System munitions that the Pentagon had previously provided to Ukraine. Those have a range of about 52 miles and carry a warhead containing 200 pounds of explosives. The new rockets, like the Abrams tanks announced last month, will most likely not be delivered for several months, if not years.
IMF giving Pakistan tough time in 'unimaginable' economic crisis—PM (Reuters) Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Friday the International Monetary Fund was giving his country a “tough time” over unlocking stalled funding from a $6.5 billion bailout at a time of “unimaginable” economic crisis. “The conditions we have to fulfil are beyond imagination,” he said, but admitted that the country has no option but to accept them. “You all know we are running short of resources,” Sharif said, adding the country was “facing an economic crisis”. Hours after his remark, the Pakistani rupee hit a record low against the U.S. dollar in a steep slide since last week. Pakistan’s central bank reserves at present stand at $3.09 billion, the lowest since 1998 and not enough to cover the cost of three weeks of imports.
Adani fraud claims cause political mayhem in India (BBC) Opposition leaders are disrupting the functioning of India’s parliament for the second day in a row, demanding an investigation into the accusations of fraud against billionaire Gautam Adani, considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Adani group’s companies have lost an estimated $108 billion in recent days over the claims, by a U.S. research firm, of “brazen” stock manipulation and accounting fraud.
Indian journalist freed on bail after two years without trial (Foreign Policy) Journalist Siddique Kappan was freed on bail after being held for two years without a trial. Kappan, a Muslim from the state of Kerala, was arrested in the fall of 2020 while traveling to Uttar Pradesh to report on the case of a Dalit girl who had been gang raped. Kappan was arrested by Uttar Pradesh police and accused of being an Islamist fundamentalist. The Kerala Union of Working Journalists said that Kappan had been “beaten thrice and subjected to mental torture during custody” in December of that year. He was granted bail in September, kept in prison on money-laundering charges, granted bail in December, and then kept in prison on technicalities. This week, he finally walked out. Kappan told reporters, “This is half-baked justice. Journalism is not a crime.”
“Guns are everywhere” in Israel, occupied territories as violence spikes (Washington Post) In earlier rounds of lethal violence here, lone Palestinian assailants often relied on kitchen cleavers, or cars as battering rams. Now they are using guns. The violence underscores what security experts have been observing in recent years—a flood of illegal arms into Palestinian communities, including East Jerusalem, where local arms traffickers say business has never been better. The same is happening in Palestinian Israeli towns, where a political and security vacuum has allowed criminal gangs to flourish, and spurred ordinary people to buy guns for their own protection. Some of the black market weapons are smuggled from neighboring countries; others are pieced together in makeshift factories or stolen from Israeli military armories. “The number of illegal weapons in East Jerusalem is unbelievable,” said Sharon Gat, a colonel in an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Special Forces unit and founder of the Caliber 3, a sprawling counterterror and security academy in Gush Etzion, an Israeli settlement south of Bethlehem. “This is very dangerous for both Jews and Arabs,” Gat said.
Pope encourages South Sudanese (AP) Pope Francis sought Saturday to console the long-suffering people of South Sudan as he opened his first full day in a country beset by conflict, poverty and humanitarian crises, encouraging priests and nuns to serve their flocks by joining in their tears. After arriving in the world’s newest country on the first-ever papal visit Friday, Francis was spending Saturday ministering first to church personnel and then to South Sudanese who have been forced by fighting, flooding and other crises to leave their homes. Lush in oil and other natural resources but beset by years of civil war and conflict, South Sudan is one of the world’s poorest countries and is responsible for Africa’s worst refugee crisis: More than 2 million people have fled the country and another 2 million are displaced within its borders. Joined by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and the Presbyterian head of the Church of Scotland, Francis is seeking to draw global attention to the country’s plight. The aim of the novel ecumenical visit is to encourage South Sudan’s political leaders to implement a 2018 peace accord ending a civil war that erupted after the overwhelmingly Christian country gained independence from mostly Muslim Sudan in 2011.
Faux dining (Foreign Policy) TripAdvisor’s top-rated restaurant for Montreal, Le Nouveau Duluth, does not appear to actually exist. It had 85 five star reviews, many of which were left by accounts that had only reviewed Le Nouveau Duluth. The page was created by comedian Charles Deschamps as a joke; it featured photos of his friend’s basement. The top review was titled: “Can’t believe this place really exist [sic].”

We really don’t talk about how fucking weird and also kinda shitty but like in a goddamn weird way Clive S. Lewis’ writing is.
Like just in the Chronicles of Narnia you, of course, have furry Jesus. But there’s more.
Islamophobia the Country in the South where everyone worships the devil.
Also that country is heavily featured in a story about a pasty white boy fleeing to the north where they have good (read British) cooking cause Calormen (again, weird orientalist amalgamation of….the entire Middle East I suppose) never felt right with him. Cause he’s white.
An eight foot tall lady arrives in Edwardian London and kicks everyone’s ass when they won’t worship her.
The of course frequently mentioned fact of the Pevensies growing old as monarchs in Narnia then getting de aged to children.
A bunch of Greek and Roman gods show up and are just? There?
The Island in the Dawn Treader where the one footed hopping invisible dwarves need a benevolent dictator, sorry, cough, wizard to rule them.
In the Silver Chair the witch lady has to turn into a snake because they can’t kill her while she looks like a lady.
While we’re at it the weirdly huge number of “people turn into animals” events that happen. A Prince gets turned into a donkey, school children into pigs, Eustace into a dragon.
Also in the Silver Chair there’s a giant underground civilization with an even deeper one called Bism where fire salamanders live? And then this is mentioned once and never again.
Also also in the Silver Chair Jill and Eustace returning to England and WHIPPING their fellow school kids?
The entirety of the apocalyptic fever dream of the Last Battle from the literal devil to the (racist) depiction of a talking ape named Shift who cons true believers with a fake Aslan which is a donkey in a lion skin.
And of course from the same book recursive heaven mountain garden thing.
And that’s just Narnia! I could go into Til We Have Faces. I could go into the Space Trilogy, with Angels protecting Mars and some random British dude protecting the Venusians from falling into original sin. Or even, from that same trilogy, the entirety of That Hideous Strength with its homophobic Ms. “Fairy” Hardcastle, or the literal actual resurrected Wizard Merlin. But I won’t!
C.S. Lewis! Weird ass dude!

Barsoom (in Detail)
Barsoom is one of the better-known planets in the Sol system. On earth, it is called Mars. The Planet itself is home to various forms of indigenous life and several sentient races. The languages of Barsoom are at least partially telepathic, but they cannot probe with their minds, only project. Anyone who cannot project may as well have Iron Mind to them. This form of projective telepathy has a range equal to their voice (constitution) and costs 3 points. Humans/Earth Folk on Barsoom receive a +2 bonus to all Strength-related rolls, a +4 bonus to all constitution-related rolls regarding fatigue, a +2 to all melee combat rolls, quadrupled jumping distances, and a -2 to all throwing tasks (overshooting). Native barsoomians on earth or earth-like planets receive a -2 to all strength-related rolls, a -4 to fatigue-related rolls, and 1/4 jumping distances.

Critical Role Miniature Rollout: C2E75
With Andrew Harshman
An archive and review of the minis used on Critical Role.
What wondrous miniature production value. Two maps that could easily have been climactic battle finales by themselves. Nearly no expense spared for a plot that is tantamount to a side quest. Is Matthew Mercer just showing off for the guest?

The Dragon
Gelidon, the Nightmare in Ivory D&D Icons - Gargantuan White Dragon
What can be said about this truly iconic D&D Icons icon? Quite a lot actually. Obviously this dragon has outstanding table presence. With a 4x4 base it dominates the map. There are some subtly awesome details in the construction of this piece. The paint, pose, and physical material are all cleverly crafted to further bolster this mini’s appearance.
The wings are just a little bit translucent, which gives them a very realistic and striking look. The sculpt has a wonderful sense of scale and weight to it. The dragon is posed in this sort of hunched stance, which really sells and justifies the size of the creature. Lots of miniatures are big, but this miniatures backs up it’s bulk with quality details that make is look like a truly massive and epic creature.
There is one unfortunate production slip up, the left wing is bisected by a gnarly seam. Only this wing appears to have been manufactured in two parts. The placement somewhat masks its presence and you’ll be so distracted by this miniatures beauty that it’s hardly perceivable.
The Gargantuan White Dragon is part of the D&D Icons series that was manufactured during the Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures Game and Third Edition period. D&D Icons, not to be confused with Icons of the Realms, which does include 4x4 dragons, but they are on crummy round flight stands and the the scale is far smaller, far wimper, far less compelling. The four D&D Icons dragons totally outclass everything else in the prepainted fantasy miniatures world.
The Terrain
Dragon’s Lair Mats by Mars: Winter’s Wrath v1.0, Dwarven Forge Caverns Elevation Pack, Dwarven Forge Dungeon of Doom Elevation Platform, Dwarven Forge Erinthor Mountains Set, Dwarven Forge Caverns Deep Ice Caverns, Dwarven Forge Caverns Deep Ice Walls, and Fake Model Snow Found at Hobby Shops
Two very hefty maps. For a person who does not like flocking, I really enjoy the physical snow particles. It is very effective. Like, Pokemon battle levels of effective. These two maps are basically all Dwarven Forge, including cutting edge Caverns Deep DF Ice Cavern sets. What a wondrous sponsorship.
The Characters
Reani D&D Nolzur's Marvelous Unpainted Miniatures: Elf Female Druid Mini images in this section sourced from minisgallery.com
The custom paint work on this model looks excellent. There does not appear to have been time for an original Steamforged sculpt, but I’m glad there was time for paint. Would definitely be interested in seeing some lawful good quality photos of this mini. We need some close up shots of this fine character.
The Monsters Yetis
Yeti Tomb of Annihilation #031 Girallon
Another bad Tomb of Annihilation piece. The pose is engaging, but that is overshadowed by iffy definition, spotty paint, and a literally spotty coat of wash. This phenomenon is not uncommon in the Icons of the Realms mini line. A strange wash which fails to bring out the sculpt details and instead just looks dirty and speckled.
Again, this is an interesting pose, but sadly the creature design is weak. The main selling point of the girallon is that is has four arms. A physical feature which is downplayed in this model. The diminutive nature of the lower arms is informed partially by the 5E Monster Manual girallon artwork, but that’s a lousy excuse. You can hardly see those scrawny little limbs. Which actually turns this into an alright yeti. One thing I do like is that the small arms are in sort of an old timey boxing type pose as if to say “Put em up, put em up!” This ape doesn’t know sign language, but he appears to be a learned pugilist.
Yeti Monster Menagerie #029 Yeti
More of that nasty Icons of the Realms black speckled wash. Decent sculpt quality with a pose that is oddly symmetrical and a pretty underwhelming. Curiously, this model has a defined buttcrack. Hopefully I’m mistaken and it’s actually just a zipper for the yeti disguise the Mighty Nein were planning to craft.
Yeti Rise of the Runelords #044 Yeti
Here we have the type of yeti that shaves their chest. Impressive physique, gotta show it off, weather be damned. On the note of physiology, this is also a very symmetrical pose too, but ti looks more natural with the limb placement offset slightly to make it look less artificial. Certainly the best of the three yetis. I can only assume this yeti is the leader. He’s the only one with any aesthetic sense. Check out that quality loin cloth and customary fantasy miniatures skull belt.
The Nonhuman Animals
Scorpion Deathknell #53 Fiendish Monstrous Scorpion
An awesome arachnid by all accounts. The red highlights are overly subtle in my opinion, but the sculpt and build are really solid. Many legged minis are often somewhat brittle. These scorpion legs are nice and hardy however. Even if you’re a powerful shape changing druid with massive snapping claws, you can’t skip leg day. It pays off as we see here.
Closing Thoughts
A regular dragon heist. Good work Mighty Nein.

My girlfriend asked me to make her a list of works of fantasy and science fiction so should could feel keyed into references when they come up in conversation. She wanted to feel more grounded in these genres, which she likes, but hasnt made the effort to be on top of everything.
I was happy to compile the most important names, but told her it couldn’t be a short list because recognizing the works of today means honoring their origins, which goes way back into our past.
What’s below is my best effort to include what I assess to be the most culturally relevant becoming, tempering my favorites, and trying to keep it from being totally overwhelming. I’ve left off works from the past five to ten years because it can take a span of time before we're aware the effects new ideas may have. Felt like sharing here in case you or your friends want a crash course on the bedrock of our imagined landscape. I do try to be globally aware, however this list will reflect my bias as a white, straight, male who grew up in the States. And as this is an ongoing conversation between her and myself, I wanted to be able to vouch for the contents.

Young Americans deserve a 21st-century Moonshot to Mars
by Vahe Peroomian
Mars should be the next destination for humankind. Gorodenkoff/Shutterstock.com
“Hidden Figures” and “First Man” were arguably the most inspirational space-themed movies of the last several years. Both, though, had to reach back to the glory days of John Glenn and Neil Armstrong. The faces of my children after watching these movies was the surest sign of a missed opportunity, of a generation raised without a Moonshot.
Back on July 20, 1969, around the globe, millions sat glued to their black-and-white television sets, waiting for history to be made. “Houston, Tranquility Base here… the Eagle has landed” marked not just a successful Moon landing but much more. It was the culmination of a Moonshot begun with John F. Kennedy’s famous speech in 1962, an endeavor that set the U.S.‘s sights on winning the space race. Fifty years on, I believe the United States needs another “Moonshot,” a seemingly impossible task that rallies everyone from engineers and scientists to teachers and generations of students toward that goal. This Moonshot is necessary not because more flags need to be planted and more footsteps left behind on a distant world, but because of the need to inspire present and future generations as mine was with the advent of the Space Age.
The Apollo program, the Moonshot of my generation, inspired me to earn a Ph.D. in physics and carry out several decades of research in space science, with an ever-increasing passion for teaching. Now, each time I step into my astronomy classroom, it’s my own sense of wonder, the sense of exploration I felt as a child, that I try to instill in my students.
A Japanese family watches their TV screen as President Richard Nixon is superimposed on a live TV broadcast of the Apollo 11 astronauts’ salute from the Moon, July 21, 1969. AP Photo
Growing up in the Space Age
At four years of age and living in Tehran, Iran, I wasn’t old enough to stay up late to watch the first Moon landing, as it occurred just before midnight, local time. But I was old enough to remember the craze that swept the planet, the pride everyone felt for humankind, and the crowds that showed up to greet the astronauts on their world tour, an awestruck four-year-old among them.
I was the perfect age. I was old enough to grow up with the Moon landings, the Saturn V rocket, the Lunar Module and the bulky spacesuits of the astronauts to hijack my imagination, for my drawings to be exclusively of space adventures and for the games I played with my younger brother based on the exploration of imaginary Moonscapes. By the time the Apollo 17 mission returned from the Moon in December 1972, I had already been captivated by the brave astronauts. Like many in my generation, I aspired to be an astronaut when I grew up. The successful Moonshot defined our generation as no peaceful world event ever had.
Over the years, I breathlessly watched the Viking spacecraft land on Mars. I held my breath as Space Shuttle Columbia blasted off to space in 1981, rushed over to Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert to watch as the very same spacecraft gracefully glided to a perfect landing and cried my heart out when Space Shuttle Challenger exploded soon after liftoff. Every sci-fi TV show and movie I watched as an adolescent and young adult, and I watched plenty, portrayed Moon bases and human exploration of the solar system by the turn of the 21st century.
I wonder, what is the Moonshot of this generation? What is the event that can inspire them with the sense of wonder that the Apollo Moon landings did for my generation? Nowadays, becoming a pro athlete is the top dream career of kids of all ages, and being an astronaut has been booted out of the top 10. How did we get here?
Excuses aplenty
For the last 50 years, every argument has been made against human exploration of the solar system. The Apollo program was too costly. Robotic spacecraft can do the job. Sending astronauts to Mars and beyond is dangerous.
And so, in my opinion, today’s space enthusiasts have wallowed in the menial and mundane successes of the astronauts on board the International Space Station. Those of us arguing for a return of human exploration of the solar system have pinned our hopes of returning to the Moon and sending humans to Mars not on a well-planned space program, but on a space race driven by the egos of the nouveau-billionaires of the 21st century.
Sure, NASA has spent these decades notching success after success, landing rovers on Mars and visiting every planet in our solar system. Which of these events did a four-, seven- or 10-year-old child watch or even remember? Which of these glued an entire planet to their TV sets? Which of these trained an entire generation as engineers, scientists and leaders?
None of these, of course.
One may argue that Moonshots are a thing of the past. Perhaps it’s better that kids today are more grounded and less prone to lofty ideals. But I disagree. I look at the effect the space race had on not just my generation, but on those that worked to make the Moon landing a reality: the thousands of scientists and engineers who were trained for that singular goal, and the millions after that were inspired by these deeds.
New York City welcomes the Apollo 11 crew. Pictured in the lead car, from the right, are astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. NASA
Moonshot as inspiration
I then see the decline in scientific education in the U.S., the decline in interest in the sciences and statistic after statistic showing American high school students ranking below the international average in mathematics and science proficiency. Is it surprising, then, that NASA is having trouble in every step of its meager plan for landing humans on the Moon again?
I cannot help but think that all this would change should the U.S. challenge itself with a Moonshot once again. And no, a return to the Moon won’t do. A real Moonshot isn’t a single mission, but a decades-long plan that educates generations, challenges its scientists and engineers, ignites the imagination and aspirations of its children, and once again glues the eyes of humanity on the livestream of that first footstep on Mars.
The Moonshot we need will have humanity establishing its first off-world colonies. It will send the first spacecraft to the distant stars. It will, more importantly, restore the United States to the forefront of science and technology. Fifty years after that first giant leap for mankind, it is finally time to take not just the second leap, but each and every leap that we’ve prevented ourselves from taking for five long decades.

Eurovision 2010s: 160 - 156
160. Margaret Berger - “I feed you my love” Norway 2013
youtube
This is definitely the section of the ranking where I feel comfortable enough to park the fan faves I like, but not love. 🤗 “I feed you my love”, definitely falls into that category for me. It’s a discount Robyn track, and one that liberally abuses its dubstepping budget.
However, I kind of lowkey ADORE Maggie Burger (-mel giedroyc). ^_^ She seems like just.. a naturally evervescent sparkplug of a human? What really sells “I feed you my love” to me specifically is her diction. It’s like Mélovinese but even better, somehow. Enjoy this adverbatim transcript:

159. Lidia Isac - “Falling stars” Moldova 2016
youtube
Yes and I *also* feel comfortable enough ranking random NQs higher than celebrated runners up. 🤭
Real question: Is “Falling stars” really that much worse of a song than “Sound of silence”? I’d say the compositions are quite even with the only real difference being the care they’re given, which Moldova, a poor country with a population of three million, simply can’t afford to do so, lacking both the talent and the resources.
As hopeless as “Fallen stars” is though, I must commend Lidia Isac here: In spite of the very narrow odds she faced, she pulled of a very valiant attempt at qualification. I think she’s a engaging and has good chemistry with the astronaut dancer (who btw, forgot to take off his backstage pass <3 incompetence <3 <3 <3). I will never reneg on praising a plucky underdog, and Lidia is precisely that. ________________________________________________________________
158. Leonor Andrade - “Há um mar que nos separa” Portugal 2015
youtube
Lmfao you forgot Leonor was still in this, didn’t you? Well let that be exactly why I rank her this high 🤗. Let me open with a Personal Leonor Anecdote:
Back in 2016, a few of my friends and I did a CO-OP ranking of all entries between 2007 and 2016, ranking them in turns. With over 500 entries in the mix, everyone just *forgot* about Leonor and she quietly made it to 75th place without ever being in danger of getting taken out before. 😂
As you can expect, my Leonor Fandom initially stemned from how memorably unmemorable she is, but as all Ironic Appreciation goes, it’s only a matter of time before it sets itself as Unironic. Much like Lidia, Leonor is not a shabby or a money maker, but a spirited bottomgoddess. Her delivery is much more intense and fierce than you may remember. Kicking the air with her giant plateau heels <3 Aggressively oscillating her shoulder pads around as a means of punctuation <3 Incoherently yelling into a windmachine <3 Ah, the tactile futility of it all <3

157. Tamara Todevska - “Proud” North Macedonia 2019
youtube
Giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirl
Oh dear how do I even tackle this one. Tamara still feels like a “Pleasant Random Underdog”, but she actually made he top 10!!! 😲
The gulf between “Proud as a song” and “Proud as a performance” is giant for me. I never cared about “Proud” as a song: It’s a stripped down power ballad with “relevant meaning”, which as you know is one of my least favourite Eurovision tropes. Also the “relevant meaning” here is female empowerment, which is awesome, but how much traction does that theme have in a song written by three white cisgender men?
However, with their new name can the time for reinvention. North Macedonia went ToDevSka and it was beautiful. Tamara was a STAR and shone so bright (into the sky):
and I mean, man, for a song I don’t fundamentally care about, I sure as hell love revisiting “Proud” and it’s all because of Tamara. I thought she would be a Gabriela (Guncikova or Horn, both work) we instead got a Kostov/Dami. She injects SO MUCH credibility in her song by making it a personal experience directed at her daughter. Poised and dramatic, yet warm and inviting. Tamara is the heart and soul of “Proud”. Simply put, she was brilliant.
I can’t think of anyone more deserving of being their country’s first top 10 placer after a 7 harsh NQs. Well done. ________________________________________________________________
156. Soluna Samay - “Should’ve known better” Denmark 2012
youtube
More pleasant randoms!!
Okay, so I remember how I am going to slaughter the underwhelming 2012 entries before the next shade of green? We’re almost there, so the time has come. Get ready!
However, Soluna doesn’t belong to that group for me, so I’m getting her out of the way first. “Should’ve known better” has a lot of heart and I find it very endearing. Overachieving drummer girl <3 All the backing musicians/singer combos <3 bringing her own furniture. <3 “Should’ve known” better is just a very quaint indie darling that many people overlooked, but never fail to conjure up a smile. ^_^

Trump Employs an Old Tactic: Using Race for Gain
By Peter Baker, Michael M. Grynbaum, Maggie Haberman, Annie Karni and Russ Buettner | Published July 20, 2019 | New York Times | Posted July 20, 2019
For the fourth season of “The Apprentice,” Donald J. Trump searched for a gimmick to bolster ratings. His idea was simple if explosive — pit an all-white team against an all-black team.
“Do you like it?” he asked, previewing the concept on Howard Stern’s radio show in April 2005.
“Yes,” Mr. Stern said.
“Do you like it?” Mr. Trump asked Robin Quivers, the African-American co-host.
“Well,” she said, “I think you’re going to have a riot.”
That gave Mr. Trump no pause. “It would be the highest-rated show on television,” he exulted.
Long before he ignited a firestorm by telling four Democratic congresswomen of color to “go back” to their home countries, even though three were born in the United States and all are citizens, Mr. Trump sought to pit Americans against one another along racial lines.

Over decades in business, entertainment and now politics, Mr. Trump has approached America’s racial, ethnic and religious divisions opportunistically, not as the nation’s wounds to be healed but as openings to achieve his goals, whether they be ratings, fame, money or power, without regard for adverse consequences.
He was accused by government investigators in the 1970s of refusing to rent apartments to black tenants (he denied it but settled the case) and made a name for himself in the 1980s by championing the return of the death penalty when five black and Hispanic teenagers were charged with raping a jogger. They were later exonerated. He threatened to sell his Mar-a-Lago estate to the Unification Church in 1991 and unleash “thousands of Moonies” if city officials in Palm Beach, Fla., did not allow him to carve up his property.
Taking on competitors of his Atlantic City casinos, he questioned whether rival owners were really Native Americans entitled to federal recognition — then later teamed up with another tribe when there was money to be made. With his eye on the White House, he opened a yearslong drive to convince Americans that President Barack Obama was really born in Africa.
His own campaign in 2016 was marked by slurs against Mexicans, a proposed Muslim ban and other furors. To deflect criticism, two campaign officials said they regularly positioned a supporter nicknamed “Michael the Black Man” so cameras would show him behind Mr. Trump at his rallies.
In the White House, Mr. Trump equated “both sides” of a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., referred to African nations as “shithole countries” and said Nigerian visitors to the United States would never “go back to their huts.”
Mr. Trump has insisted he is the “least racist person you have ever met” and over the years he has made friends with prominent African-Americans, particularly sports and hip-hop stars. Just Friday, Mr. Trump spoke with the rapper Kanye West and promised to intervene in the case of his fellow artist ASAP Rocky, who is being held in Sweden on an assault charge, and followed up by calling the Swedish prime minister on Saturday.
Donald J. Trump✔@realDonaldTrump
Just spoke to @KanyeWest about his friend A$AP Rocky’s incarceration. I will be calling the very talented Prime Minister of Sweden to see what we can do about helping A$AP Rocky. So many people would like to see this quickly resolved!

Some of Mr. Trump’s black friends defended him in recent days, saying his raw, politically incorrect approach was just bracing honesty about the reality of America, and not motivated by hate.
“I have an advantage of knowing the president very well, and he’s not a racist and his comments are not racist,” Ben Carson, the secretary of housing and urban development and only black member of the cabinet, said on Fox News. “But he loves the country very much and, you know, he has a feeling that those who represent the country should love it as well.”
Lynne Patton, a Trump family event planner now working in the administration, rejected accusations of racism.
“Trump sees success and failure, not color not race, not gender not religion,” said Ms. Patton, who is African-American. “I’ve traveled the country with this family, I’ve had drinks with this family, I’ve been at their weddings, their baby showers, their bachelorette parties. I’ve never heard anyone say anything bigoted or racist in my life.”
And White House officials argue that actions speak louder than words. Unemployment among Hispanics and African-Americans has fallen to record lows on Mr. Trump’s watch, they say, and the president signed legislation overhauling a criminal justice system tilted against people of color.
But the longer Mr. Trump spends on the stage, the more friends and former employees, like Michael D. Cohen, Omarosa Manigault Newman and Anthony Scaramucci, have concluded that he is more racist than they had admitted.
“Let me be clear: Donald Trump is a disgusting, filthy, petty racist and he is trying to start a race war in this country and what we saw this week is just the beginning,” said Ms. Manigault Newman, a former “Apprentice” star fired after a stint in the White House.
Mr. Scaramucci, who briefly served as White House communications director, wrote on Twitter that Mr. Trump would never have told a white immigrant to go back to his country. “That’s why the comments were racist and unacceptable,” he said, remarks that got him disinvited from a Republican fund-raiser.
For some who defended Mr. Trump against charges of racism in the past, this was a turning point. “As much as I have denied it and averted my eyes from it, this latest incident made it impossible,” Geraldo Rivera, a roaming correspondent at large for Fox News and longtime friend, said in an interview.
“My friendship with the president has cost me friendships, it has cost me schisms in the family, my wife and I are constantly at odds about the president,” he added. “I do insist that he’s been treated unfairly. But the unmistakable words, the literal words he said, is an indication that the critics were much more right than I.”
‘The City Was a Caldron’
Mr. Trump is a product of his place and time, born and raised in the Queens of another era. As he sought to make his mark in Manhattan real estate in the 1980s and 1990s, New York was struggling with a string of racial episodes, including the Bernhard H. Goetz subway shooting, the Howard Beach racial killing, the Tawana Brawley rape hoax and the Crown Heights riots.
In a city rived by tribal politics, elections were about assembling coalitions — white ethnic groups in Queens and Brooklyn, Hispanics in the Bronx, African-Americans in Harlem and, later, central Brooklyn. Race was a part of every citywide campaign every four years. That shaped the outlook of many rising stars of the moment.
“It was a period of enormous tension and the city was a caldron for those kind of emotions and very strong passions and feelings, and they spilled over,” said Robert Abrams, the special prosecutor in the Brawley case. “And unfortunately, I think Donald Trump was helping to fan some of those flames.”
The Justice Department housing discrimination lawsuit against him and his father and the case of the Central Park Five accused of rape were early milemarkers on Mr. Trump’s path. But he was a Democrat then operating in a diverse city and he showed a different side to many he met.
Charles B. Rangel, then a powerful African-American Democratic congressman from New York, saw Mr. Trump regularly when the developer would drop off checks for the party. What defined him was his “giant ego,” Mr. Rangel said the other day, but he never heard him make a racial remark.
“I don’t remember any remarks he ever made that was not sharing with me how much he thought about himself,” he said. “It was always the same story.”
The Rev. Al Sharpton, the civil rights leader who has grown more publicly critical of Mr. Trump in recent years, likewise recalled nothing overt. “I’ve never heard him say anything racial,” he said. But, he added, “I always sensed he was not comfortable being around us. He reminded me what he was — a Queens guy. He saw us as entertainers or athletes that he had to do business with.”
When Mr. Trump opened Mar-a-Lago as a club in the 1990s, he welcomed African-American and Jewish members. Still, he did not mind turning societal divisions to his advantage, at one point claiming Palm Beach was anti-Semitic in a zoning dispute because his members would be Jewish.
‘Put People in These Boxes’
Some who worked for Mr. Trump said he showed his true colors after growing comfortable with people. Jack O’Donnell, who was president of the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino and later wrote a scathing book about Mr. Trump, said the mogul would come into the casino and notice many African-Americans. “It’s a little dark tonight,” he would say.
According to Mr. O’Donnell, Mr. Trump said “laziness is a trait in blacks” and complained about an African-American accountant: “Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day.”
In an interview, Mr. O’Donnell said Mr. Trump trafficked in stereotypes. “He genuinely believes things like white people are smarter. And black people don’t want to live next to white, and white people don’t want to live next to black people,” Mr. O’Donnell said. “And he rationalizes that as, everybody thinks that, so it’s not racist.”
Mr. Trump has dismissed Mr. O’Donnell as “a loser” but at one point accepted the book’s description. “The stuff O’Donnell wrote about me is probably true,” he told Playboy. Later he disputed Mr. O’Donnell’s account, telling NBC’s “Meet the Press” that “he made up stuff.”
Mr. Trump’s assumptions about people are based on what his biographer, Michael D’Antonio, called his “racehorse theory of human development.” Mr. D’Antonio said Mr. Trump told him a person’s genetic traits at birth were more important than anything learned over life.
“He likes to put people in these boxes and deal with them accordingly,” Mr. D’Antonio said. “It’s not universal and you can work your way out of the box. But working your way out of it is always personal. So one by one, black people can gain his confidence, but he does have this mentality about people as members of a group.”
‘The Blacks Love Me’
That helped shape Mr. Trump’s time on “The Apprentice,” where he was accused of giving short shrift to an African-American contestant, Randal Pinkett, who won the fourth season. During the finale, Mr. Pinkett said he was stunned when Mr. Trump, upon declaring him the winner, suggested he share the honor with the white woman he had just beaten.
“I would describe it as racist,” Mr. Pinkett said in an interview. “Not even racist overtones — racist.”
“Donald,” he said, “has constructed a world around him that reflects his identity and reflects his values. People who agree with him, people who celebrate him, people who he would consider to be his peers — wealthy white men.”
Mr. Pinkett added: “He’s completely out of touch with the realities of people not like him. Whether that’s people of color, ethnic minorities, immigrants — I mean, take your pick.”
Over the years, Mr. Trump has deflected criticism by citing friendships with black celebrities. In the 1980s, he became a fixture ringside in Atlantic City, befriending the boxing legends Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson and the promoter Don King. He briefly owned a United States Football League team, leading to friendship with its star player, Herschel Walker.
As the hip-hop industry flourished in the 1990s and 2000s, rappers often used Mr. Trump’s name in lyrics as a symbol of wealth and flash. Along the way, he became friendly with Sean Combs, Snoop Dogg and Russell Simmons.
Mr. Trump boasted about the mention of his name in rap videos, asking one of the secretaries to find examples on YouTube and play them for guests. “The blacks love me,” he said proudly.
By 2015, now running for president, he stopped using “the” before describing ethnic groups. While some black celebrities stood by Mr. Trump, other relationships have soured because of his politics. Mr. Simmons, in an open letter that year, told his estranged friend to “stop fueling fires of hate.”
‘This Is Just Politics’
The foundation of Mr. Trump’s campaign was built on questioning the birth of the first African-American president. To Ms. Manigault Newman, a conversation she had with Mr. Trump about the “birther” campaign during a break in taping of “The Apprentice,” was the first time she saw him as overtly racial.
“He was bragging about it,” she said in an interview. “I asked him, ‘Why would you do this?’ He said, ‘This is just politics. This is what happens in politics, you do opposition research.’”
And yet like others in Mr. Trump’s orbit, Ms. Manigault Newman did not find it so objectionable that she broke with him at the time. She spoke out about what she considered Mr. Trump’s racism only after she followed him to the White House and was subsequently fired.
In a campaign filled with racial controversy, Mr. Trump’s team sought to prevent a backlash. An ally in their efforts was the one they called Michael the Black Man.
Michael is Maurice Symonette, a man from Florida who once belonged to a violent religious cult and was charged but acquitted of two murders in the 1990s. During the campaign, he traveled the country to appear at Mr. Trump’s rallies holding a sign saying, “Blacks for Trump.”
Campaign officials said they made sure to position him behind the candidate. In October 2016, Mr. Trump noticed his sign. “Blacks for Trump,” he said. “Those signs are great. Thank you.”
Lynnette Hardaway and Rochelle Richardson, two African-American sisters and internet stars better known as Diamond and Silk, came to Mr. Trump’s attention after one of their videos went viral attacking Megyn Kelly, then a Fox host, for her aggressive questioning during a debate. They met Mr. Trump in December 2015 when he brought them onstage at a rally in Raleigh.
“I turn on my television one night and I see these two on television,” he told the crowd. He called them an “internet sensation” and implored them to entertain the crowd. “Do a little routine; come on,” he said. From then on, they became a regular opening act at his rallies.
Mr. Trump’s presidency has been filled with so many racial conflicts that many in Washington have become numb. After he made his “shithole countries” remark to lawmakers, some just shook their heads. “It wasn’t too much of a surprise,” said former Senator Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican and outspoken critic. “He had been consistently coming from this.”
By the time of Mr. Trump’s “go back” taunt and the “send her home” chants of a rally crowd a few days later, congressional Republicans were clearly discomfited but unwilling to publicly repudiate him.
“The president,” said Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, “is not a racist.”
‘When the Riot Starts’
Mr. Trump’s vision of a black-against-white season of “The Apprentice” never came to pass. He pitched it to NBC executives, prompting a series of can-you-believe-this conversations inside the network, according to two executives involved. It was quickly rejected.
One former executive described his reaction as, “Uh, I don’t think so!”
The concept later came to fruition on a rival network, CBS, which aired a season of “Survivor” in 2006 in which contestants were initially grouped by ethnicity. The idea generated protests but was defended by the producer: Mark Burnett, who also created “The Apprentice.”
“He always told me that was Mark Burnett’s idea,” Ms. Manigault Newman recalled. “But Donald Trump was champing at the bit to do that.”
He sounded enthusiastic during his appearance on Mr. Stern’s show in 2005. Mr. Stern asked if there would be both light-skinned and dark-skinned contestants on the black team and Mr. Trump said it would be an “assortment.” As for the white team, Mr. Trump said it should include all blonds.
Even as he egged him on, Mr. Stern expressed more concern about the ramifications than Mr. Trump. “Wouldn’t that set off a racial war in this country?” he asked.
“See, actually, I don’t think it would,” Mr. Trump replied. “I think that it would be handled very beautifully by me. Because, as you know, I’m very diplomatic.”
Mr. Stern agreed. “I gotta tell you something, on some level it’s wrong,” he went on. “But I like it. I like it. I would watch.”
“You’d have to,” Ms. Quivers replied, “because you’d want to know when the riot starts.”
