Roleplaying Races 14: Shobhad
Tumblr media
Though many erroneously assume that D&D and subsequent games like Pathfinder were exclusively inspired by the works of Tolkien, in truth tabletop gaming has been influence not just by the wide gamut of fantasy fiction, but also science fiction as well.
Notable today is the Barsoom series, also known as the John Carter of Mars series of pulp sci-fi stories and novels written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, a sci-fi series in which the titular hero is transported to Mars an encounters the many strange beings that live there, including the Tharks, also known as Green Martians, massive greed humanoids notable for their four arms, lanky yet powerful builds, and tribal lifestyle. Other such beings like the white apes of mars would serve as inspiration for fantasy gaming’s girallons, but it is the Tharks that inspired today’s playable ancestry, the shobhad!
Heavily inspired by the thark, the shobhad first appeared in the Distant Worlds book as the first look into the solar system that Golarion resides within, and as a healthy injection of pulp sci-fi com complement the already present amount mostly concentrated in Numeria.
The shobhads hail from Akiton, which is heavily inspired not just by the real planet Mars, but also by pulp science fiction stories about Mars, ranging from the shobhad themselves, girallons being from there, red-skinned humans, as well as beyond Burrough’s influences with figures like the contemplatives of Ashok.
The shobhad themselves actually underwent a facelift after their initial appearance. While initially looking like brutish blue-skinned humanoids with four arms, shobhad were later re-imagined in Starfinder and later Pathfinder 2e to be closer to their thark inspiration, having pronounced facial shapes and powerful tusks alongside the four arms and wider variety of skin tones.
Living on a harsh world, shobhads prize strength and resilience above all, and place a strong focus on personal honor and the ritualized ways in which one can improve their status. They view those living in permanent settlements as weak and lacking the identity that personal accomplishment can grant one even after death. As such, they are disdainful of “soft folk” and rarely extend to them the same honorable practices they use with their kin, instead remorselessly culling them if they prove a problem to the tribe, unless of course they manage to impress them.
Of course, there are some outcasts that act as mercenaries, venturing into settled places to offer their services, though this is clearly an exception, and looked down upon by the shobhad.
It should be noted that these mighty giants are not truly evil, but their harsh way of life leaves little room for compassion that they cannot afford, such as to strangers that they feel cannot contribute in a meaningful way.
Shobhads are large, strong, and insightful, and surprisingly nimble for their size.
They are also raised as warriors, and learn how best to roll with and avoid incoming blows.
Their natural ferocity also makes them hard to put down, letting them fight past pain where others would be brought low.
They also prove to bey surprisingly stealthy and keen hunters as well.
Physically athletic, they can leap great heights and move across the desert with ease.
Their four arms are not just for show either, and they can fully utilize them while wielding objects.
Now, the shobhad is difficult to justify using unless your campaign takes place on Akiton or a similar Mars-like world, but if you have the opportunity to do so you won’t be disappointed by this ancestry. Their large size and strength bonus from size does mean that they can be excellent melee combatants, and their wisdom makes them a good choice for most divine classes like druid, cleric, and especially warpriest. However, a sleeper hit you might not think about is their association with their shobhad longrifles, making potential sniper gunslingers and other gun-focused builds a possibility, albeit one that will require some replacement if your campaign functions in normal gravity. Honestly there’s no class in which they find themselves lacking, though even with their stalker ability the dex and stealth penalty are an uphill battle if you want to build them as a stealth character.
That does it for today, but we’re only halfway through the week, and not done with big burly ancestries at all. Tune in tomorrow for more!

Ahh, I see. A good source of inspiration!
Throon
Tumblr media
“Goro the dragon prince” © deviantArt user “Zombiraptor”, accessed at his gallery here
[Commissioned by @crazytrain48. The last Arduin monster for now. The original was pretty clearly “inspired” by the tharks of Barsoom, and was a monster with 4-9 HD and Large size. This version is scaled down to be PC appropriate-ish, but is still pretty damn powerful. If you want to use an OG throon, PFRPG has its own thark ripoff in the shobhad.
Also, considering that the Pathfinder setting has a royal house of supervillains named “Thrune”, I find the name an amusing coincidence. I imagine House Thrune would disagree.]
Throon CR 1 CN Monstrous Humanoid This muscular humanoid has four arms and slaty blue skin. Its teeth are tusk-like, and it wears litter except for a leather harness and a loincloth.
Throons are a nomadic race without a homeland, which care about little except for warfare. Most of them make a living as mercenaries, using the wealth earned by their muscles in order to improve their weapons and decorate themselves. Throons have a vain streak, and cover their faces and bodies with paint and tattoos, and wear jewelry (silver is a typical favorite). It is said that a throon only lies down when they are dying, and the race does sleep standing up. Few throons have an emotional connection to anyone but themselves, and they treat even stalwart allies as capable of being discarded and replaced if needed.
Most throons live for combat, which they throw themselves into lustfully. With their four arms, most throons wield a combination of a two-handed weapon and a shield, leaving one hand free for grabbing or disarming a foe. A few dual-wield, and the most feared throon warriors carry two oversized axes or swords. Throons rarely use missile weapons except for throwing axes or daggers, seeing archery as a coward’s resort.
Throons are slow-growing, and do not reach their full seven foot height until around age 30. Males are much more common than females, and birth rates are relatively low. As such, they are not numerous, with more throons typically dying in battle than being born to replace them. Their strange physiology has led scholars to suspect they are native to another plane or planet. Throons are omnivorous and will happily scavenge from battlefields for rations—even other throons are not exempt. They particularly like the flavor of pumpkins, and pumpkin dishes and beverages are served at festivals.
Throons as Player Characters A throon does not have racial Hit Dice, and instead advances by class level. Throons are more powerful than most player races—a throon with NPC levels is treated as a CR of its level-1, and a throon with PC levels has a CR equal to its level. +2 Str, +2 Con, -2 Wis, -2 Cha Throons have powerful bodies, but weak minds Monstrous Humanoid A throon is immune to spells and effects that target the humanoid type. Medium Size Throons gain no benefit and suffer no penalties for their size. Normal Speed A throon has a land speed of 30 ft. Low-Light Vision Four Arms A throon has four arms, which it can use as normal. It gains no special benefit when wielding two or more weapons, but can qualify for the Multiweapon Fighting feat. A throon gains a slam attack for each arm that deals 1d4 points of damage as a primary natural weapon. Multiarm Maneuver (Ex) A throon gains a +1 bonus to its CMB and CMD for every free hand it has. Its statistics above are calculated with one free hand. Stolid (Ex) A throon gains a +2 racial bonus on all saving throws against emotion effects. Strong Back (Ex) A throon counts as a Large creature for the purposes of carrying capacity. Languages A throon begins play speaking Common. Throons with an Intelligence bonus may select from the following languages: Draconic, Giant, Gnoll, Goblin, Orc, Undercommon

Video: Sonam Kapoor reveals what made her react to Shobha De's brutal comments
Tumblr media
Video: Sonam Kapoor reveals what made her react to Shobha De's brutal comments - The makers have released another interesting episode featuring the fashionista of Bollywood, Sonam Kapoor. Arbaaz Khan's chat show Pinch that revolves around a unique concept wherein Bollywood celebrities open up about their social media interactions, has been making headlines. Now, the makers have released another interesting episode featuring the fashionista of Bollywood, Sonam Kapoor. During the interaction, Arbaaz pointed out to Sonam that she keeps reacting to people on social media and he also brought up the infamous Shobha De's controversy. He said, "You have reacted to certain comments and statements on social media, you have reacted to Shobha De at one time and then you realised and you were sat down by your dad Anil Kapoor who told you..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqccwVCC_-c Sonam quickly cut off Arbaaz and added, "No it was not my dad who sat me down actually, it was my sister. Shobha De has very strong opinions, sometimes they can get extremely personal, sometimes they are intelligent and then sometimes they are just plain provocative. I that time thought that if she has an opinion then I am allowed to have my opinion about her.” “I was very hot-headed, ready to jump the gun and very defensive when I was young but my sister turned around and said that 'why do you want to stoop to her level' and I don't necessarily think I was stooping to her level but I was twenty-years-old, it was a reaction, it obviously hurts,” she adds. “There is something called constructive criticism and there is something called personal criticism. I felt at that time that her criticism was very personal, it was like a double-edged sword. She said something very nice about me and at the same time, she said I was ordinary. She said she's a good actress but she is the girl next door ordinary looking. Simple, no sex appeals,” she concludes. Produced by QuPlay, Quick Heal Pinch by Arbaaz Khan has 10 episodes of approximately 20 minutes each and will be streamed online once a week on QuPlay’s YouTube channel. The show is written and directed by Abbiy Obheroii. Other celebrities on the chat show include Karan Johar, Sonam Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sunny Leone, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Varun Dhawan, Kapil Sharma to name a few. Bizzy Sodov, Space Goblin
Guggit of the Oilstains Clan (or more properly, the “We Tell The Longshanks It’s Just Oilstains And Nothing Else” Clan) was born on Akiton well past the time the planet’s major industries had petered out. From one of the few groups of space goblins to leave Absalom Station and not die horrifically on the way to another world, she was born into worldwide urban decay and deindustrialization that ranged from steady entropy, to aggressive and abrupt. The uncertain life was familiar to most greenskins, but something in Guggit was hooked by a promise of more.
The AbadarCorp representatives with their fancy suit-robes and shiny video displays said a lot of things she didn’t understand, but the promise of rewards and wealth, and the shiny golden ties they wore made for a great temptation. So, when an opportunity to volunteer as a test subject for an experiment came up—with the promise of compensation and food as the real incentive—she jumped at the chance. With new chunks of technology shoved into her oversized noggin directly uploading oodles of training and technological know-how, Guggit woke up from the surgery as a test subject for a new marketing ploy to manufacture infosphere personalities to sell AbadarCorp products: an infomercial host.
After a misunderstanding where she was busy fooling around with the games now built into her brain, Guggit received the online alias of “Bizzy Sodov”, and was introduced to the Akiton infosphere as a charming (for a goblin), intelligent (for a goblin), tech-savvy (for a goblin) vidcaster. Her “GobHacks” attracted some small amount of celebrity over the planet, but after a few incidents of oh gods why is everything covered with ice this was supposed to make fire and how did you weaponize the subwoofer and what did you do to the district prelate’s hair, Bizzy was encouraged to hone her skills elsewhere and seek new horizons...
...by which i mean they bribed a crew of Starfinders to take her with them.
Physically, Bizzy looks like an atypically healthy goblin, chubby and with relatively blemish-free skin, all her teeth (except for one left out as a “charm point”), and the matte gold finish of her cybernetics capping her head, including a set of built-in welding goggles that are usually ratcheted in place higher on her brow.

“I’m Bizzy and this is GobHacks! Today we’re going to see if the modifications to the engine hold on I’m stuck in the drift manifold—”

And sometimes I make my voice go like this and it sounds like I’m a shobhad,  look at me with my stupid face and my extra arms I think I’m so cool because I’m longer than a longshanks...”
“It slices, it dices, it goes for the eyes!”

Roleplaying Races 16: Honorable Mentions
So we’ve covered every possible playable ancestry published in First Edition… Well, almost. There are a handful more that I didn’t deign to do full entries on, but I figured I’d cover them today anyway.
The first of these two are the beings of Ib, which are, like yesterday’s Yaddithians, another Lovecraft reference, specifically to the short story “The Doom that came to Sarnath”.
Essentially, in the story, the humans living in Sarnath, a city-state in the Dreamlands (yes, there are whole-ass human colonies living in the Dreamlands in the Cthulhu Mythos, and by extension the Lost Omens setting), came to hate their amphibian neighbors of the neighboring Ib for their appearance, unnerving silence, and worship of a fearsome Great Old One known as Bokrug. And so they slaughtered them, leaving none alive and stealing the idol of Bokrug as a trophy.
However, when the high priest of the Sarnathians was found dead with the word “DOOM” painted on the walls in his blood and the idol missing, that was the first sign that something was amiss, but in the coming centuries the humans became forgetful and decadent, the dread promise of vengeance from a dead people all but forgotten, and on the millennial anniversary of their victory over Ib, the waters rose up and green shadows swept over the city, slaughtering the humans just as they had long ago.
Now, there are two reasons I didn’t cover the Beings of Ib in these entries. The first of which is the fact that they are almost all certainly dead, with only rare colonies or the possibility of an original homeworld somewhere in the stars being the exception, while potential others could be resurrected by truly powerful magic.
The second reason is because while most of their abilities are pretty nondescript and basic, the fact their pliable and uniform bodies are immune to crits and precision is a bit much to allow at most tables. But the option is there, in theory.
The second of these options is also Paizo-published, but comes from a crossover tie-in comic called Worldscape, in which Pathfinder iconics get to team up with heroes from other franchises, in this case, Tars Tarkas, a mighty warrior among the green martians of the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs!
Naturally, the comic included playable stats for green martians, so that is neat if you ever wish to play one, but I decided not to go over them because the Lost Omens setting already has a mars-expy and even a four-armed warrior martian people-expy build into it in the form of the shobhad. This makes green martians somewhat superfluous unless you really, really want to specifically replicate the abilities of green martians or want to use them as a starting point to convert into the shobhad themselves if you want to play one.
Finally, I would like to give one last shout out to the multitude of various third-party ancestries out there, from the individual homebrews to the obscure self-published web supplements to even those that are even endorsed by Paizo itself. If you can imagine it, you can make a way to play it, and It’s a blessing to see folks be creative out there.
That will do for today, but I have some final thoughts I’ll save for tomorrow before we close the book on this for good.

SHOBHAD LONGRIFLE
A shobhad longrifle is treated as a Large rifle (Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Equipment 46) with a range increment of 200 feet, but it functions only on low-gravity worlds.
ECOLOGY
Environment cold deserts or mountains Organization solitary, pair, raiding party (3–19), or clan (20 or more plus 1 sergeant of 3rd–4th level per 10 adults and 1 leader of 5th–7th level), plus mounts (use statistics for ankylosaurus, Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 83). Treasure NPC gear (hide armor, 2 longswords, 2 javelins, shobhad longrifle with 20 bullets, other treasure)
These fabled four-armed giants are native to a low-gravity planet and renowned across several worlds for their ferocity in battle. Most shobhads are born and come of age in fierce tribal clans known collectively as the Shobhad-neh, and disdain the “soft living” practiced by many other humanoid races—they believe the abandonment of nomadic culture is a slippery slope that leads away from individual honor and into marginalization. Whether with flashing swords and lances or mysterious longrifles capable of picking off targets on faraway horizons, the clans of the Shobhadneh constantly vie for resources in the hard deserts and mountains where they live, their need to survive trumped only by a still greater desire for honor.
Though considered barbaric by many, the Shobhad-neh operate under strict codes of conduct that dictate how a warrior may gain status via ritualistic challenges or daring coups in territorial squabbles. Unfortunately for other races, these rules almost always apply exclusively to interactions with other shobhads, and the Shobhad-neh see “lesser” races as little more than sheep to be culled.
Typical shobhad warriors stand 12 feet tall and weigh 500 pounds, and their lean bodies are corded with ropes of muscle. Most shobhads prefer to go naked save for loincloths and the leather harnesses that crisscross their chests and secure their weapons in place. When they wear clothing, its either practical such as hide armor and wrappings that protect against biting sandstorms, or ceremonial like the brightly colored skins and feathers chieftains and shamans wear.
Though shobhads can be found on occasion working as lone mercenaries in cities, such urban individuals are the exception rather than the rule. Shobhad shamans preach that in human cities, an individual is little more than a faceless cog in a machine, remembered by no one. Yet a shobhad warrior who rides heroically into battle atop her armored reptilian steed is never forgotten—neither by her own kin, nor by the families of those she defeats. Thus, in battle, a shobhad is made truly immortal.
