Tim Burton's short film Frankenweenie debuted in Los Angeles 40 years ago today, on December 14, 1984. Tim Burton's career as an animator and filmmaker at Disney came to an end when the studio saw this short, which they felt was too dark and scary to fully release (it had been intended to play before the 1984 re-release of Pinocchio, which was released a week later with the 1952 short Pluto's Christmas Tree in front of it instead). Disney had previously had negative feelings towards Burton's 1982 shorts - the stop motion Vincent and the live action short Hansel and Gretel (which Disney considered SO offensive, dark and strange that it only aired once on the Disney Channel on Halloween night 1983 at 10:30 PM) - that the studio accused of him of wasting resources and fired him. Frankenweenie was shifted to accompany the 1985 release of Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend, and only in the UK.
Disney didn't work with Burton again for years, until The Nightmare Before Christmas... which they found so dark and weird that they released it under the Touchstone banner rather than positioning it as Walt Disney Pictures' animated holiday release. (They're very happy to exploit it constantly now, though, as they are with Frankenweenie, which was too awful to release but not awful enough to do a full length stop motion remake of for general audiences. Changing times, I guess.)

Hello everyone! I recently watched a frankenweenie and I really liked it, so I made a character for this universe. Her name is Sayaka and she is Toshiaki's younger sister. She is about 1 or 2 years younger. Smart, cunning and tearful girl. I love her

"I'll tell you a story, make a skeleton cry of our own jubiliciously lovely Corpse Bride~"
Still one of my FAVORITE movies and Danny absolutely slays it with the soundtrack, it's a staple for me. If you've ridden in my car you've probably heard me singing every part XD
