🧛🏽‍♀️🧟‍♀️👹Horror Movies for Beginners🦇💀👻
Disclaimer: This is something I'm doing for fun and because I've had people in the past ask me for suggestions for people who are interested in horror but are too scared to get into it. I'll be adding more to this list as I think of more.
Tips: For one thing, I would suggest checking doesthedogdie.com before watching any horror movie. It's a great source for triggers ahead of time. The people who contribute to it can be very helpful too, as they sometimes provide timestamps as to where in the movie the triggers take place so you can skip over them.
I would also suggest horror comedies, as they provide humor to lessen the blow of the scary stuff.
But Wait!!!
🇵🇸🍉
Before you continue reading about scary movies, please consider taking a look at some charities benefitting families in Gaza. I'm going to try to update it regularly!
Spooky Movies for Beginners
Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, Ghostbusters (2016)
Tumblr media
Yes, I am including 2016. No, I am not ashamed to like that version. No, I will not be taking criticism. I did not include Afterlife because I have not seen it yet. That aside, I do recommend the Ghostbusters movies listed. The movies contain a balance of horror and comedy and cool science-fiction tech. They're fun, but not too scary for beginners.
Haunted Mansion (2003)
Tumblr media
Most of the "scares" in this movie aren't really scary. If you've been to Disneyland and can ride through the attraction with no problems, you can probably get through this movie. It's geared more towards families, so if you have kids, they'll probably enjoy watching it with you. However, there is an anti-Romani slur used repeatedly throughout the movie. Also, proceed with caution if you have a fear of spiders.
Coraline (2009)
Tumblr media
This movie is animated but contains a lot of creepy imagery. Some kids might get creeped out by it. If you like "rabbit hole" type movies that involve stumbling upon hidden and treacherous worlds, you'll probably like it. Henry Selick, the dude who made Nightmare Before Christmas, is responsible for this film adaptation.
Wendell and Wild (2022)
Tumblr media
Another animated movie from Henry Selick with Jordan Peele. Two mischievous demons cause havoc. Peele and Kegan-Michael Key play the demons. Oh, and it's a middle finger to private prisons and the school-to-prison pipeline, so there's that. If you're too afraid to watch Get Out, Us, or Nope, but want to experience the horror magic Peele, you will probably enjoy this one.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Tumblr media
I'm hesitant to put this one on the list because this one does contain disturbing imagery that can be too much for a beginner. But this is a really solid movie even if the ending has already been spoiled for you. How scary the ghosts are really isn't what this movie is all about--the themes of grief and healing are really what it's about.
Gremlins (1984) and Gremlins II: A New Batch (1990)
Tumblr media
When I was a kid, my parents thought they could scare me into behaving by saying the gremlins from these movies were going to get me. But I loved the gremlins because they were fun and I wanted to be their friends lol. If you like practical effects, you'll probably like this movie. I don't think these movies would be scary for most adults, but kids might be a little iffy with the gremlins--but Gizmo is adorable and might be able to balance out the scariness. However, there is some...questionable Asian representation typical of 80's movies. Proceed with caution.
Warm Bodies (2013)
Tumblr media
This movie was released when the Twilight craze was at its height and I remember being shit-talk about that, but this movie is worth watching. Yes, it is about a zombie falling in love with a living human, but it really is adorable (in my opinion) and the movie is overall clever and fun. I will say that there are some parts that might be a little too much for beginners. The "bonies" might be a little too scary. However, the "scary" parts are very brief and they are not the center of the story.
Dracula (1931)
Tumblr media
One of Universal's classics. This was probably a very terrifying movie for the time it was released, but by today's standards, I cannot describe it as scary. You'll probably laugh at the bat puppets used throughout the film. However, Bela Lugosi's timeless portrayal of Dracula is nothing short of creepy. There's a reason it's still iconic even to this day. The film, though, is not for everyone. It's just under an hour and a half but can feel very slow to those with short attention spans. Regardless, I think this is a must-watch if you're into vampires of any sort, and it is worth appreciation.
To be continued...

Green Lantern and his run-in with a spider.
(I have figured it out! Tomato soup, Sudafed, and being sick makes me feral as fuck! So be prepared cause I’m still sick and it’s probably not ending anytime soon.) TW: Arachnophobia (But it’s not a real spider, just a spider made of copper)
Hal Jordan was not made for long nights of all work and no play, or traveling on and off Earth to exchange information with the other Green Lanterns.
He all but collapses on his dirty bed, still as the Green Lantern, only to jump up with the most manliness scream known to man as he comes face to face with Red Robin, who was sitting right next to his bed (waiting in the dark and quiet). “Don’t fucken do that kid! I about hit you!”
”You couldn’t hit the red side of a barn with a bottle.” The kid replays with an exhausted grunt, clearly the kid is back to his own bullshit of not sleeping properly, which is very valid to Hal.
”Why are you even here? It’s like.. 4 in the fucken morning or something.” Hal mumbles as he tries to get comfortable, only to feel something hard under his stomach. Which he properly searches his bed and finds a small spider made of melted copper.
“Oh come the fuck on…” Green Lantern grumbles as he grabs the spider and tosses it towards Red Robin. “Your turn kid. Not it.”
Red Robin grabs it and checks it over, finding a small note etched into the under belly of the spider.
“Look to the stars, and find the trail of powered Kryptonie.” Red Robin reads out loud, and looks at Green Lantern for a clue.
”Isn’t that the stuff that Superman’s made out of, or wait. He is weak to that. It’s like the Red Sun and magic.” Hal rolls out of his bed and moves to stand up, but notices that someone else had joined the later night party.
A, fucken, giant copper spider crawls into Hal’s apartment through the OPEN window, and settles itself on the floor near a confused Red Robin.
”FUCK THAT!” Green Lantern and Red Robin screams in pure panic as they both rush away from the giant spider and barrel into the bathroom, slamming and locking the door behind them.
“Green Lantern to JL, you have five seconds to come to my location before I burn this building down!!” “Red Robin to Oracle, how do you kill a giant copper spider, without burning the room down?”
The noises of confused panic is the only response that Green Lantern and Red Robin make out as they both try to figure out how to get out of the bathroom without destroying the entire room, as the bathroom window was too small for Red Robin to crawl out of.
Cue a few hours later, really only 10 minutes later, and another heart attack, due to Martian Manhunter popping his head in the bathroom through the wall, until Red Robin and Green Lantern were able to safely come out of the bathroom.
Only to see that the giant, LIVING, copper spider, and the fake small cooper spider were gone, and the message was now written on a piece of golden paper laying on Green Lantern’s side table, near his bed.
To say that Hal Jordan decided to spend the night, and a few more nights, in the JL Headquarters would be an understatement, as would Red Robin switching to patrolling in the daytime hours for a little while be as well.
At least until Batman figures out the meaning of the message, and receiving an envelope with an apologetic letter and a promise that no more copper spider visits for Green Lantern and Red Robin.
”Are we SURE that it’s not some cosmic gremlin child playing pranks on us? Does it not know how else to send out a letter? Does it not have a phone or email?” Green Lantern complains for weeks later from this experience.

Sive, probably: get your vampire under control
Montana being able to use her magic again might have been good for zombie eradication but definitely not for everything else in the vicinity of said zombie eradication
Florence approves, Cornelia is concerned

Tony: No, we can’t have a productive conversation till he’s (senior) been here for two days and screws up something huge. But it did help talking about it, with someone who’s got it together.
Jimmy: wait, did you say you think I have it together?
Tony: yeah, you’ve got it all. Germlin. You’re kind of my idol.
Can we discuss this scene please. All Tony wants is to have a job and a (normal) family. But it’s extra painful because he already has a family, he just doesn’t know about.

I want to kiss Harpuia so bad and see him blush
Sage Harpuia is a hardhead, yet his beloved never ceases to amaze him.
Blessed by such a meaningful kiss, a delicate brush against unsuspecting lips enough to erase him mid-thought in an instant-it takes him off his feet, tenses his spine, a feat within itself. For a second, it seems like Sage will scold you. Reprimand you for such inappropriate behavior.
But the words don't come, only heavy silence, but what follows is absolutely graceful. A treasure, that fine smile. The shift in his mood, almost frightening how quick his chest flutters, how loose the stoic tightness becomes, stress blown over. Clear skies overhead, a weight suddenly lighter; his heart expands in your hands, it shows, slipping when he didn't mean it too.
Yet he can't seem to care about keeping up appearances.
When it comes to you, there seems to be quite a few exceptions Sage willingly bares. Vulerability.
You recognize that smile, the humane sense of belonging and familiarity. A novelty in war-struck Neo Arcadia, the nostalgic feeling it leaves behind: happiness. You want this kind, lonely person to be truly happy in a torn world that expects him to die for people who don't deserve him.
Sunshine in his grin, turning you blind to the walls that overshadow your every move. Flower buds' sprout, friendly eagerness, sparkling in the vast forest greens in his eyes. A pair of emeralds, glimmering like diamonds; a calm flicker of compassion, gracing that gorgeous face you adore so much. A rarity you can't afford to miss.
It won't be long before he takes revenge however, your lover is a military general after all. His pride will hurt to leave this be without throwing a card in the pile, especially when he hasn't even shown his hand yet.
Sage won't give up-his heart won't let him-until your lips know exactly what it's like to be caught off guard. He will return your gift right back at ya, memorizing every curved inch and wet centimeter, kiss-bruised and red in the face as your beloved paints you red. Flushed cheek to cheek, ear to ear.
Sage spares no sympathy, grinning in sadistic satisfaction as you helplessly melt like pudding in his hands.

DNA Mishaps: When the Script Gets Flipped!
DNA, the molecule that holds the blueprint of life, isn't always static. It's like a library of instructions, constantly copied and passed on. But sometimes, errors creep in, leading to changes in the genetic code known as mutations. These alterations can be small and subtle, or large and dramatic, impacting the organism in various ways.
Imagine you're writing a super important essay, and accidentally mix up the letters. Instead of "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog," you end up with "the qick brown foz jmups ovetr te laxy dog." Oops! This, my friends, is kind of what happens in DNA mutations. But instead of an essay, it's the blueprint of life getting a little jumbled. Understanding these changes is crucial, as they hold the key to understanding evolution, genetic diseases, and even the potential for future therapies. Sometimes, due to mistakes during copying or exposure to things like radiation, chemicals, or even sunlight, those A, T, C, and G chemicals get swapped, added, or deleted. It's like the gremlin wrote "foz" instead of "fox."
Let's dive into the wacky world of DNA mutations
Mutations come in all shapes and sizes, classified based on the extent of the change:
Point Mutations: These are the most common, involving a single nucleotide (the building block of DNA) being substituted, deleted, or inserted. Think of these as single typos. One little DNA letter gets swapped for another. Sometimes it's harmless, like mistaking "flour" for "flower" (just add more water!). But other times, like switching "sugar" for "salt," it can completely change the outcome Point mutations can be: 1. Silent: No change in the encoded protein, like a synonym in language. 2. Missense: A different amino acid is incorporated, potentially impacting protein function. 3. Nonsense: The mutation creates a "stop codon," prematurely terminating protein production.
Insertions & Deletions: It's like adding or removing words from a sentence. These larger mutations involve adding or removing nucleotides, disrupting the reading frame and potentially causing significant functional changes.
Chromosomal Mutations: When entire segments of chromosomes are duplicated, deleted, inverted, or translocated (swapped between chromosomes), the impact can be far-reaching, affecting multiple genes and potentially leading to developmental disorders.
More Than Just a Glitch: Mutations can be beneficial, neutral, or detrimental. Some mutations are neutral, like a typo you don't even notice. But others can be like changing "hilarious" to "hairless" – they might have a big impact. Beneficial mutations, like the one enabling lactose tolerance in some humans, drive evolution. Neutral mutations have no impact, while detrimental ones can cause genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia.
Where Do Mutations Occur? Mutations can happen in two types of cells: Germline Mutations: These occur in egg or sperm cells, meaning they get passed on to offspring, potentially impacting future generations. Somatic Mutations: These occur in body cells after conception and don't get passed on, but can contribute to diseases like cancer.
Scientists use various techniques to study mutations, from analyzing individual DNA sequences to tracking mutations across populations. This research helps us understand the causes and consequences of mutations, potentially leading to therapies for genetic diseases and even the development of new drugs.
Mutations are not errors, but rather the dynamic fuel of evolution. Thankfully, our cells have built-in proofreaders who try to catch and fix these typos. But sometimes, mutations slip through. By understanding their types, impact, and study, we gain a deeper appreciation for the intricate dance of life, where change and adaptation intertwine to create the diverse tapestry of the living world.
