Detailed drolleries from a 1920s childrens book series.

I mean these aren't even the actual illustrations, they're just decorative margins. Pictured here in mostly blue because it shows the details the best. This book series actually alternate print colors in blue, red, green and brown. And theres different ones in all the different books, these are just some I liked.

This incunabule (incunabulum) which was printed in Cologne in c. 1477, belonged to the collection of Robert Ashley (1565-1641). It is a biographical compendium of Church fathers and a history of the early Church. The printed initials are illustrated by hand with these comical figures. This mimics the way manuscripts were produced, a practice that continued beyond the advent of printing in circa 1450.

📜 Pranks of Monks or Secrets of Medieval Manuscripts

Illuminated manuscript are handwritten book that has been decorated with gold or silver, brilliant colours, or elaborate designs or miniature pictures that explained the text of the book.

The monks copied the manuscripts and, as is the case with boredom, they occasional add drolleries in the margins of the books. There were various images of killer rabbits and other animals, birds, fantastic creatures and other "medieval emojis" unrelated to the text.

The word "drollerie" comes from the French drôlerie, meaning a joke. A drollerie is a small decorative image in the margin of an illuminated manuscript, most popular from about 1250 through the 15th century, though found earlier and later.

Drolleries are amusing figures, often grotesque. While drolleries are often meant to evoke laughter, they may be understood at a deeper level and reveal aspects of society at that time.

🖋️ Lastly, drolleries were but one of the many types of marginalia. Among the more interesting of these are the complaints scribbled onto the edges of texts by the Medieval scribes and copyists.

Some examples of complaints and remarks made by them include “Thank God, it will soon be dark”, “The ink is thin”, and “Now I’ve written the whole thing: for Christ’s sake give me a drink”.

«Иллюминированные рукописи» - это рукописные средневековые книги, которые украшались золотом или серебром, яркими цветами, сложными узорами, миниатюрами и орнаментами, а также живописными иллюстрациями, которые не столько имели назначение художественного декора, сколько поясняли текст книги.

Однако встречались странные изображения кроликов-убийц и других зверей, фигурки птиц, фантастические существа и прочие причуды, не имеющие отношения к тексту. Существует теория, что подобные рисунки, так называемые "средневековые эмодзи", оставляли на полях скучающие монахи, которым хотелось развлечься. Но это всего лишь теория.

Такой вид иллюстраций на полях называется "Дролери́" (от франц. drôlerie — "шутка, шалость, чудачество"; drôle — "смешной, забавный"), или маргиналии.

Этот забавный жанр, свидетельствующий о свободе мышления средневекового художника, близок к гротеску. Он зародился примерно в середине XIII в. и наибольшее распространение получил в парижской школе книжной миниатюры XIV—XV вв. (хотя встречался и раньше, и позже).
