Dear Complete Stranger on the Playground, Please stop asking the gender of my children on the playground, or assuming that it’s important information. You are perpetuating a flawed societal conversation that is the cornerstone of all parental interactions. Also, once I state that my child is gender-fluid, please don’t ask me if it was MY choice. I don’t even know how to answer that question, honestly, because it presupposes that I try to control who my child is (though, in hindsight, I could have asked that question of you and your seemingly cisgendered children). All this question does is make me feel like I need to share my child’s personal story of “coming out,” and that is 100% none of your business. Additionally, it is inappropriate to suggest that “this is probably a phase.” Whether that statement becomes true or not, my child currently identifies as gender-fluid and it would be incredibly destructive for me to live in some fantasy world where things “might” change. I love and support my child, no matter what. NO MATTER WHAT. On top of this fantastical thinking, you are shoving an unhealthy narrative at me, oh random stranger, that my child is not normal and that someday they will “figure it out” and conform to society’s ideas of gender. I understand that these might seem like small statements or are based in a genuine curiosity, but they force me to morph into a tiger to protect my child. I do not want to be a tiger on the playground. I just want to be a parent, watching my children enjoy the slides and the swings. If we must have these conversations about gender, which I’m totally open to having, please be respectful and think about the consequences of your words before you say them. Empathy goes a long way. After all, I’m just a parent with kids, trying to make it through another day on the playground, just like you. I just happen to have an amazing kiddo who is in touch with their identity, feels supported in their truth and is willing to live an authentic life, out in the open.
