In Super Mario Galaxy, if Luigi dies during a garbage clean-up minigame in Battlerock Galaxy or Dreadnought Galaxy by falling off the platform on the same frame as the timer running out, the cutscene after this will be glitched.

The camera will briefly show Luigi and the Gearmo, but the Gearmo will not talk. Instead, the camera will continue moving past them and start turning around, showing the environment. The game does not respond to any input after this, causing the rotating camera movement to continue forever until the game is reset.

Chain Chomps Are Made Of Magma

In Super Mario Galaxy 2 it is revealed that Chain Chomps are being made at a place called Chompworks by the Gearmos. It also appears they might be made out of Magma given the Golden Chomp emerges out of the lava. But these seem to be a special factory made Chain Chomp, and their might be different species depending on how they are made. But they are indeed made from lava.

So in Yoshi's New Island there is a Chain Chomp that appears called the Fire Wanwan Dosun, these Chomps are a flaming Magma appearing Chomps that come flying out of volcanoes to attack Yoshi. This seems to further confirm this is how Chomps are created.

Now one final thing, so when I was younger and played Super Mario Sunshine I believe the Chain Chomp from Pianta Village is a Chain Chomp that emerged from Corona Mountain aka Volcano. I made the connection using it's flaming lava like appearance and attitude, and the existence of the bath in the village that seemed perfectly designed and made to cool off a newly made Chain Chomp.

Now in hindsight with the knowledge of how Chain Chomps are created in the Mario World, I think this old hypothesis of mine is far more likely. What do you think?

In Super Mario Galaxy, the Gearmos who appear in the garbage destruction side missions are carrying magnets.

The magnets actually have the letters N and S on them to denote the north and south magnetic poles, but this is nearly impossible to see in-game from the regular camera angles and requires going into first-person view to see.

Name: Salt Mushroom

Debut: Super Mario Galaxy 3

Everybody remembers when Super Mario Galaxy 3 launched worldwide for the Wii's immensely popular successor, the Nintendo Wii Too, blowing all of our collective minds with its flawless combination of the inviting and memorable atmosphere of the first entry in the series with the incredible 3D platforming of its immediate predecessor. But let's be honest, we've all seen Super Mario Galaxy 3 at the top of enough "Greatest Games of All Time" listicles by now. Today we're going to take a much more focused look at just one element which helped to make Galaxy 3 one of the greatest 3D platformers of all time, and one which hardly warrants such a lengthy introduction: the Salt Mushroom!

This item first appears somewhat late in the game, in the Briny Mine Galaxy mission Salt Mario Finds the Cure. You land on a small planetoid with some Gearmos who explain to you that the mine's been overrun with weird monsters! With a boost from a Launch Star, you propel yourself into a pipe, which takes you straight into the depths of the Briny Mine itself.

Sure enough, there's weird monsters all over the place! Excargot, to be precise! These heavily armored, tank-treaded snail creatures try to charge at Mario, leaving trails of slippery slime everywhere! But jump out of the way, and they'll go flying into the wall, causing the shell-like armor on their backs to shutter open, exposing the slimy pink skin inside. What's that? Why haven't I included an image of Excargot, an extraordinarily weird Mario enemy? Well, I mean, we've all seen it. It would be pretty redundant to show a picture, then, wouldn't it? Hm? Now you want to know why I've explained everything in such gratuitous detail thus far? I think you need to keep your voice down.

Anyway, if you try to attack this glaring weak spot with a stomp or a spin, Mario simply bounces off! Clearly, a power-up is in order. Collect the nearby ? Coin to summon the Salt Mushroom, and collect it to become...

Salt Mario!!! With his newfound powers of star-spin-propelled salt-flinging, Mario can handily defeat the Excargot, and even walk with ease across their slime (and even across ice later on in the ever-iconic Slick Street Galaxy). But that's not all! The more time Mario spends as Salt Mario, the more his Hydration Meter decreases! His movement gradually becomes more sluggish, his jump height becoming shorter and weaker, all the while delivering his voice lines with that trademark Salt Mario hoarseness, and loudly rasping his parched lips when left idle, desperately pleading for water.

Of course, we all know that there is no water anywhere in the two levels where the Salt Mushroom is found, and we all know the grisly fate that awaits our plucky plumber when his Hydration Meter finally runs out. We've all seen it! Dozens of times! Hundreds, even! I think I speak for everyone when I say I could watch it happen forever and ever, and never stop laughing!

Needless to say, Salt Mario was a huge hit with fans, and Miyamoto has even cited the Salt Mushroom as his all-time favorite power-up. Some could say the Salt Mushroom has eclipsed even Mario himself in popularity, and many consider it to be the new face of the franchise! I mean, it's a hard claim to deny when we're three entries deep in the Salt Mushroom Rally series (yes, I'm counting Salt Mushroom Rally: Alkaline Abscondence as a discrete title from Salt Mushroom Rally: Alkaline Abscondence Deluxe, I'm not arguing with you about this). And with that, much like Mario's Hydration Meter, my material has finally run dry. You know what Mario would say in this situation? Of course you do! Say it with me, everybody! "HHHHHKKH, KHKKHHHHHHHHH, HHHHKKKKHKK!!!"

Thwomps, Chomps and Bob-ombs, my theories on the artificial beings of Mario

Thwomps, Whomps, Bomps... The Mario universe has its fair share of sapient rock creatures. It has also many other artificial/metal creatures like Chain Chomps and Bob-ombs. I've often contemplated the nature of those mysterious beings, so here are my attempts at understanding them. This is a long one, so bear with me.

Now, before we start, I have a couple disclaimers to get out of the way that would help in understanding my ramblings:

1. There are a lot of speculative links between different "species": Many of the points I will bring up are only directly tied to one "type" of artificial being, e. g.: Bob-ombs having a spirit; seemingly lifeless Thwomps abandoned and overgrown, etc. I speculate that those characteristics can generally be applied to other types of artificial beings, e.g.: Bob-ombs having spirits means that Chain Chomps also have spirits, etc. 

2. Possessed doesn't mean what you think it means: Simply put, I'll be using the word "possessed" or similar concepts to describe the way these spirits inhabit their artificial bodies. By that I don't mean possessor-type ghosts who jump in and out of furniture to create chaos. Imagine it as your own soul possessing your own body, the two being intrinsically connected since birth and mostly all the way up to death. 

With that out of the way, let's start with their birth.

Thwomp birth: Thwomp Volcano 

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, one of the locations visited is the Thwomp Volcano, a mountain literally built out of unchiseled Thwomps of various sizes. We see those same unchiseled Thwomps being shot out of the volcano during its annual eruption. 

“Own up! I mean, look at you! You're obviously all plumbers! Thanks to your meddling, my hubby's in a stone funk! Jumping into that volcano was his hobby, you terrible men! We've been waiting for the annual eruption all year!”

We also see a young professor E. Gadd studying the nature of the Thwomps and the mountain itself. That might not make much sense at first, given E. Gadd specializes in ghosts, but remember that Thwomps were literally described as ghosts in the English manual of Super Mario World.

A better translation of the Japanese manual (石のお化け “ishi no obake”) would be “stone spirits” or “stone demons”. I don’t mean to suggest they are literally undead people but more like a type of nature spirit in the world. E. Gadd is even described as an “obake researcher” (オバケけんきゅうか)  in the original japanese version of Luigi’s Mansion.

“Thwomp A nasty stone ghost that guards the castles and fortresses for the Koopas. If Mario comes close, Thwomp will try to crush him. The trouble is, if you don’t pass it, you can’t go on.”

I speculate that Thwomps are formed inside the volcano, where their spirits are born and gain a stone body from the cooled magma. I also believe that other similar species like Thwimps, Whomps, Walleyes, etc. are either born from the same volcano or from similar locations.

Chompworks Galaxy and the Bob-omb Factories

Although they might not initially look all that similar, Chain Chomps and Thwomps could have a lot in common, starting with their creation. 

The Chompworks Galaxy is a location seen in Super Mario Galaxy 2, where Gearmos work to maintain a production line of Chain Chomps. The large bodies of lava present here might suggest that the creation of Chomps is tied to a foundry-like process, much like how the Thwomp Volcano would work in a similar manner, using molten rock instead of molten metal.

On a side note, Bob-ombs have also been shown to be factory-built, as we see in minigames such as Sort or ‘Splode from Super Mario 64 DS/New Super Mario Bros. or the Bob-omb Factory board in Mario Party 9.

Chomp Rocks and Stone Chomps

Another connection that can be made between Thwomps and Chomps comes not from the classic Chain Chomps, but rather a variant of them, the Stone Chomps. These stone variants are only found in Paper Mario, inside the buried temple of Dry Dry Ruins. 

Given that the ruins themselves are very ancient and that the regular Chain Chomps in Tutankoopa's battle were brought by him, it stands to reason that these Stone Chomps are equally ancient and inhabitants of this tomb, unlike the Chain Chomps used by Tutankoopa, who was assigned by Bowser to guard the Star Spirit.

Besides Stone Chomps, another hint at the true nature of Chain Chomps can be seen with the Chomp Rocks that are prevalent in the Yoshi series. These large round statues, placed across the island, might’ve once been living Stone Chomps (more on that topic in a moment). It would explain why they are so haphazardly placed, generally out in the wild.

My hypothesis on the nature of Chomps is that, like the Thwomps, Chomps were once naturally made out of stone. At some point in time, Chomps started being artificially built out of metal, with Chompworks being one such factory. These newer “models” were then named Chain Chomps.

Bobby, Chomp Shells and Thwomp Ruins

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, The Bob-omb Bobby shows us that they too have souls and can become ghosts, just like how Thwomps are “ghosts” (i.e. stone spirits). This means Chain Chomps likely have similar spirits too. Interestingly, while that shows us their spirit can linger on after their body is destroyed, there are cases where the opposite seems to happen.

The aforementioned Chomp Rocks might be empty husks of Stone Chomps, who have somehow left their bodies in the distant past. The same seems to be true for the Chomp Shell weapon from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (called ワンワンの���けがら, Chomp Husks, in Japanese) as well as the motionless and cracked Thwomp husks found in places such as Thwomp Ruins from Mario Kart 8, Thwomp Desert from Mario Kart Wii and maybe even the Beanbean Kingdom in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Maybe this is as close to a natural death as these beings can get, or maybe they are able to separate from their physical bodies without the latter’s destruction. Personally I doubt the latter.

The Mario Party 2 board Horror Land features Whomps that become immobile stone statues during the night. Perhaps a similar effect is at play here.

Final Thoughts

Connecting all those dots, my theory is that Thwomps, Chain Chomps and Bob-ombs (and related species) all have/are spirits of some type. Thwomps and Stone Chomps are natural stone spirits, with Chain Chomps having come from Stone Chomps after they started being manufactured. It is unclear if Bob-ombs (and others like Bullet Bills) were once naturally occurring spirits like Chain Chomps or are fully artificially-made spirits.

When a Thwomp's, Chain Chomp's or a Bob-omb's body is destroyed, their spirit likely dies with it. But as shown with Bobby, there is a possibility that some of them linger on as ghosts. Perhaps the other ones return to their place of origin and receive new bodies. As I speculated in a tweet here.

It also seems like they might also "die" in some other way, leaving empty shells behind. Whether that is their way of dying from old age or possibly willingly is unclear.

So I just watched the episode "Freddie"again after a long time, it's not one of my favorite for, well, it's the Freddy episode, but I noticed something. Nandor has no romantic interest in Freddie untill he learns that he's Gearmos boyfriend. In his first meeting with him he actually assumed he was food that Gearmos brought for him.

SELF INSERT LINE UP!!

Because we all know how much I love line ups!! From left to right: Syntax, Florence, Ambrose, Regna, DDR (Danny), Pyramus (and Thisbe!).

These are all of the inserts/sonas I've really ever made, I technically don't really use Syntax or Florence (still love you guys!). I'll post their separate portraits and some info below the cut!

Syntax: My first real insert, Syntax is my M.ario character!! He's the king of the Toy Time galaxy and is a glorified Gearmo. Very cocky and stubborn, but once he has his eyes set on a goal there's no stopping him! He can walk on spikes but can't go in water (he's a robot, and is very dramatic about it.)

Florence: She's my D.anganronpa character! I use her kinda more as an oc than a proper insert nowadays, but I still love her. Her ultimate has bounced around a bit, something along the lines of Historian and Journalist. Florence is a survivor of the first game, and is that class's transfer student (she's from Boston).

Ambrose: Ambrose is another character where they double as a sona. She's a character in Ruby Rogue, my classic lit heist story that I totally didn't forget about. He's pretty much a vampire assassin, also from Boston, in the fictional decade of 1970.

Regna: Regna's my D.ragon Ball insert, and probably the one I post most about. He's part of a trio of bounty hunters/ black market traders in Hell (mostly contraband technology and stuff like that), but while alive he was the king of a planet. Regna is a master with technology. Do not let him near a microwave.

DDR/Danny: Yes he is named after the arcade machine. Transgender swag. Danny is a ghost in the G.uilty Gear universe. Basically he got electrocuted to death during that whole Y2K thing and was stuck as a ghost. He's also a bounty hunter current day who is both great at his job and an absolute clutz. He can summon missiles.

Pyramus (and Thisbe!): My newest insert, Pyramus is a demon hunter in the D.evil May Cry universe! His devil art weapon thing is a cloak in his back houses the former lioness demon Thisbe, as well as a giant hammer. He became a demon hunter after his mom got turned into a demon flower monster thing. Someone should get him a therapist, but coffee helps in the meantime.
