Maro’s The Lord of the Rings Teaser

Before previews for The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth ™ officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I’m only giving you partial information.  

 

First up, here are some things you can expect:  

• five different card types get the legendary supertype

• a decently sized “legendary matters” theme

• new nonmana ward costs  

• a mechanic returns but now references a different creature type

• a card that makes a Smaug creature token  

• two three-color and one four-color legendary creature to go along with the five-color one already previewed

• a lot of one-of “creature type matters” cards

• a mechanic returns that I had to fight tooth and nail to get into the set it premiered in

• a new creature type gets its own equip cost

• some counters in the set: burden, deathtouch, first strike, hope, indestructible, influence, lifelink, lore, stun, verse, vigilance, and +1/+1

Next, here are some rules text that will be showing up on cards:  

• “Whenever you attack with Merry and another legendary creature,”

• “Then create a Food token for each creature you control.”

• “Remove an indestructible counter from Arwen:”

• “Copy any number of target instant and/or sorcery spells.”

• “Whenever you draw a card during an opponent’s turn, create a 1/1 blue Tentacle creature token.”

• “Whenever a creature an opponent control dies, put a +1/+1 counter on Legolas.”

• “Target opponent gains control of target Horse you control.”

• “When this ability resolves for the third time this turn, Gimli fights up to one target creature you don’t control.”

• “You may pay 0 rather than pay the equip cost of the first equip ability you activate during each of your turns.”  

• “Whenever you put one or more counters on Aragorn, put one of each of those kinds of counters on up to one other target creature.”

hands-down the best eruri fic i've ever read. i believe in my ao3 bookmarks i have that exact note lol. i binged it all in under a day and then reread it the next day.

it's how i got inspired to write my first longfic (in the aot fandom), and to write eruri (after writing xReader for a long time). ughh it's so sexy and sweet and even a canon fix-it on top of all that. SRSLY is a must-read if u like eruri.

鳥居 (torii) - Deck ⚪🔵⚫🔴🟢

for Commander

鳥居 [to.ri.i] literally means 'shrine gate'. My original concept was to combine Shrine typal with Gate typal. There are quite a few Legendary Shrines but not a lot of other direct support. There are a lot of Gates and considerable support as well as a direct Win condition. There are a number of flaws in this build, because I misunderstood Shrine as a type. I had incorrectly assumed that it was a creature type. But it is only an enchantment type. I had fun with this deck, but found the Shrine and Gate archetypes got in the way of each other. A rebuild of this would need to solve that.

Liu Zhigang was swimming to Japan.

Canon says later that no one would let him leave the country after what happened with Kamish because they didn’t want to lose such a powerful defender. He was only allowed to go to Korea later because Sung Jin-Woo is even stronger so people were like ‘without him as a defender we’re all screwed’ and people still complained about it and he yelled at them about ‘Korea is right next to us you dumbasses if we let Koreans die we’re going to die too.’

When the Japan gatebreak happened it’s mentioned that Liu Zhigang encountered a golem at sea, with the golem at the process of swimming to China. He says ‘fighting it on the water was a pain’ so why didn’t he like, wait for it to get to land? Maybe bait it in the direction of open coast?’

Unless he wasn’t anywhere near land. He and the golem met in the middle of the effing sea while he was trying to sneak over to Japan to help out with the rampaging golems. What do you bet he swam the rest of the way, found out Sung Jin-Woo beat them, and then turned around and swam back and went ‘yeeeah... I was totally fighting a golem just offshore the whole time, it took FOREVER’

This guy.

No wonder the rulers made him so OP: they’re in his effing fanclub. Whatever he got up to in previous timelines they were like, ‘A++ protecting humans this guy, let’s give him more power next time so he can do more of it.’ And like. kept ratcheting it up until they gave him access to more power than the people who were actually channeling them.

My first pass at a proper deck for this concept that has seen actual play testing. No infect, just damage, and a little over $100 on tcgplayer due to things like Cabal Coffers and Witch's Clinic.

Is it good? Eh, it's alright.

Does it send a message? Yes.

And that message is

I am upset

I only now realized my favorite card from the latest mtg set

is not a creature. It is a Vehicle who is commonly a creature on your own turn.

I can't have Grond as my Commander, Wizards? Why not?! One of the most important characters in the army, and the only named siege engine I know. And it can't be your Commander. You've got 3 Aragorns, 3 Frodos, 4 Gandalfs, and Bill the Pony, but no commander Grond.

Cowardice! Cowardice is what it is.
