Maro’s The Lord of the Rings Teaser
Before previews for The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth ™ officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I’m only giving you partial information.
First up, here are some things you can expect:
• five different card types get the legendary supertype
• a decently sized “legendary matters” theme
• new nonmana ward costs
• a mechanic returns but now references a different creature type
• a card that makes a Smaug creature token
• two three-color and one four-color legendary creature to go along with the five-color one already previewed
• a lot of one-of “creature type matters” cards
• a mechanic returns that I had to fight tooth and nail to get into the set it premiered in
• a new creature type gets its own equip cost
• some counters in the set: burden, deathtouch, first strike, hope, indestructible, influence, lifelink, lore, stun, verse, vigilance, and +1/+1
Next, here are some rules text that will be showing up on cards:
• “Whenever you attack with Merry and another legendary creature,”
• “Then create a Food token for each creature you control.”
• “Remove an indestructible counter from Arwen:”
• “Copy any number of target instant and/or sorcery spells.”
• “Whenever you draw a card during an opponent’s turn, create a 1/1 blue Tentacle creature token.”
• “Whenever a creature an opponent control dies, put a +1/+1 counter on Legolas.”
• “Target opponent gains control of target Horse you control.”
• “When this ability resolves for the third time this turn, Gimli fights up to one target creature you don’t control.”
• “You may pay 0 rather than pay the equip cost of the first equip ability you activate during each of your turns.”
• “Whenever you put one or more counters on Aragorn, put one of each of those kinds of counters on up to one other target creature.”
Here are some legendary creature type lines in the set:
• Legendary Creature – Avatar Demon
• Legendary Creature – Bird Noble
• Legendary Creature – Halfling Knight
• Legendary Creature – Halfling Soldier
• Legendary Creature – Horse
• Legendary Creature – Kraken
• Legendary Creature – Nymph
• Legendary Creature – Spirit Noble
• Legendary Creature – Spider Demon
• Legendary Creature – Wraith Noble
Finally, here are some card names from the set:
• Birthday Escape
• Breaking of the Fellowship
• Fear, Fire, Foes!
• Grond, the Gatebreaker
• Horses of the Bruinen
• Lembas
• One Ring to Rule Them All
• Oliphaunt
• Second Breakfast
• There and Back Again
Find out about some of these cards and more in The Lord of The Rings: Tales of Middle-earth™ debut 9:00 am PT on Tuesday, May 30th at twitch.tv/Magic or on our official YouTube channel.’

MaRo has posted his Murders teasers, and frankly they haven't gotten me this excited since VOW. So, I'm gonna overanalyze the crap out of it, share the parts I'm most excited by, and probably prep myself for disappointment.
Full link here, just in case
Two absolute bangers, one I love and one I worry about. Clues are that perfect power level where you love to have them, but they don't give you as commanding of a lead (currently, at least) as something like treasure or free card draw. Token decks getting card draw when they're flooding seems nice. I imagine this will be blue or white, which is a nice bonus since both colors also like using artifacts for other things.
The poison counters could be a problem in Standard. While I appreciate that they're exploring more ways to use the mechanic, the poison deck in standard is already quite good (in my experience). We'll see if it makes waves. Probably black.
As an unapologetic blink enthusiast, I was popping off at this. Alesha EDH loves this, it works hand in hand beautifully with splicers in casual play, Serra Paragon (and venerated rotpreist) in standard, all kinds of stuff. Depending on what the rest of the text around this looks like, I could see it being the card in the set that I end wanting dozens of.
Kinda hope it's not an artifact. Color limitations are fun.
A continuation of the previous, I like rewards for playing little guys, but I also kinda think tokens can be hell, especially in EDH if that player gets too ahead. Also synergizes with -1 counters, which is fun. Probably black. That's where most death triggers lie, but I could see it being white or blue, a trail of minor deaths leading to bigger clues, or maybe red. Not sure where reds coming from. Just feels right.
Choose any number of targets players is just fun from a political angle. I like swinging deal and table talk in multiplayer games, so this is right up my alley.
Not really substantial here, but I love an homage to old cards, and Renowned Weaponsmith getting a spiritual successor is very fun for me.
And that's kinda all that caught my attention firmly. The set seems like it's doing lots of weird stuff, and I'm always down for that, and if the last years drafts have been anything to go by, this one should be a banger. I personally can't wait to start seeing more spoilers trickling out, and patiently wait for the day we get people complaining about Clues the way they did about treasure in Kaldheim.
#magic the gathering#murders at karlov manor#Maro Teasers#delirious thoughts#i should really get caught up with the webfiction.

I love these card names for Duskmourn from Maro's teasers. We got all the modern horror tropes on display here, including the cheesy sequel.
Meathook Massacre II COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU THIS FALL. I can't believe they just named a card that, and after one of black's best board wipes too.

Maro's Foundations teaser said this: "A character from one of our most popular online Magic stories returns". Any ideas who it could be?
probably Alesha! Maro has stated before that "The Truth of Names" is the most popular story

So Maro's teaser "Whenever you sacrifice a clue, target opponent gets 2 poison counters" feels very Planeswalker-emblemy to me, like Ajani, Sleeper Agent's -6 ability.
So what if this is Jace? He's gone to Ravnica in search of Vraska, sneaks into the party to try and gather intel about anyone who's seen her, gets caught up in all the murder shenanigans. He's never really had anything to do with Clues before iirc, but it could just be trying to tie him into set mechanics.

Duskmourn: House of Horrors
With most of the set spoiled I think it's time for me to share my thoughts. When I first heard this set was themed around horror I knew we would get some good artwork as well as a ton of referenced to classic and modern horror movies and I think it's safe to say they didn't disappoint.
Rooms are an interesting mechanic. When MaRo gave his traditional teasers he mentioned "A component of the set with a frame using technology first designed for an Un-set" but this isn't what I was expecting. It's definitely an interesting concept where you can cast one side to unlock that room and then pay the cost at sorcery speed to unlock the second. This reminds me of the split cards from the Return to Ravnica block with the Fuse mechanic but in permanent form. I also like how the artwork is one cohesive image that depicts both rooms.
It's not a standard set without a rare land cycle and these ones definitely blew my mind. I can definitely see these being used in commander but not on turn one unless you have a card to spend the mana on. They definitely have potential mid- or late-game and I can see them becoming staples in commander. Now we just need the enemy versions.
MaRo also mentioned a Meathook Massacre II in the list of card names which got a lot of players speculating about how it would compare to the original. If you ask me the original is better because this one is too expensive at 2X and four black while the original pretty much does the same thing at a cheaper cost and gets around indestructible like this one. I can see it being played in some decks but like a lot of graveyard-based strategies it's a lot less powerful against graveyard hate. On a side note i like how some cards have a treatment called "lurking evil" where they have a monster in the artwork that the other version doesn't. It seems fitting for a set like this.
I love the references to famous horror movies in this set just like the references to famous detectives and mystery movies in Murders at Karlov Manor. I'm not much of a fan of horror movies but I like the Final Destination series, especially the third one which is referenced in The Rollercrusher Ride. I love how even people who aren't fans of horror movies can recognize the references to "Ghostbusters" in Ghost Vacuum, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" in Chainsaw, and "Children of the Corn" in Orphans of the Wheat. Not to mention "Saw" in Let's Play a Game and "The Ring" in Cursed Recording.
Now for my favorite reference. I'm honestly not sure if John Carpenter's "They Live" counts as a horror movie since it's more action/sci-fi but apparently Wizards considers it one. "They Live" is one of my favorite movies (not because of the critique of capitalism and consumerism but because I'm a huge Roddy Piper fan and one of his most famous lines came from that movie) so once I saw the alternate artwork for Doomsday Excruciator I knew I had to get myself a couple of copies. I actually dressed up as his character a couple of years ago for Halloween and tied for second at my work's costume contest. I might do the same this year since Roddy would have been 70 this year. This may not be the most obvious reference but it's definitely my favorite.
I think that's pretty much it for my thoughts on Duskmourn. I think the mechanics are pretty self-explanatory and I like how we have desparked versions of Tyvar and The Wanderer. The Wanderer is one of my favorite characters so I got myself a copy for my collection. Honestly if anyone can survive the house of horrors that is Duskmourn it's her. Liliana would have been cool to see because she would fit right in on Duskmourn but she fits well on Innistrad with all of the dead bodies she can resurrect to do her bidding. I have my cards preordered and I can't wait to get them.

"A character returns as a Legendary Creature that first appeared in flavor text in Alpha."
This is one of MaRo's teasers for Duskmourn. There aren't very many characters named in Alpha. A lot of the quotes in flavor text are from real world people.
Clearing those out we have:
Justina, a savior who imbued her weapons with her life force
Najib, had a castle at El-Abar
Gnerdel, a Gray Ogre philosopher
Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar, personal chef to a Demon
Pashalik Mons, Goblin leader
Angus (Mackenzie?)
Mi'cha, the War Mammoth
Norin the Wary
So, there's eight characters here and that is if MaRo is teasing a named character in the flavor text. If Angus is Mackenzie, then half of these characters already have cards.
But he also said they were returning. I'm gonna go by that and say we've seen this character as a Legendary Creature card already. The only one I would want to see return is Norin the Wary, so maybe he comes back on a new card. Plus, I can see him finding his way to Duskmourn and being scared of everything.

Update on the future, TWO!
Ok these ones are so far in the future they don’t have names yet and nothing is set in stone. They had some concept art but Maro stressed they are literally still working on these so stuff can still change so mostly these are the teasiest of teasers
Tennis
Death-race set. So like my best comparison is Petals to the Metal in Adventure Zone 😅 Neat thing though, because of the Omenpaths, this race/set takes place across 3 planes. Two are planes we’ve been to on premier sets before and the third is one that has been on cards but we haven’t actually been there yet. So 👀 Feels like a potentially good return for Kaladesh? Also maybe Kamigawa again? Idk about the plane we haven’t officially been to before.
Ultimate (Frisbee)
I have made my posts so I’m gonna be so normal here I swear. Return to Tarkir. Design philosophy, “best of both worlds” (dragons and khans!!!) Ahem yes. That is what this is about.
Volleyball
Top down space opera set. I’m intrigued. The concept art was pretty nifty and I mean, Unfinity showed us that space lands can fuck severely. Between cyberpunk Kamigawa and Unfinity I am way more receptive to this than I might have been a few years ago. I don’t know the actual “space opera” trope specifically so IDK have an opinion there much, but still. I’m excited magic is exploring new ground.
Wrestling
We’re going back to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor baybeeee! I’ve never been there and I’m excited to go. I’m excited to see the new twists! :D
Yachting
Back to school season! We be going to Arcavios (Strixhaven)
Ziplining
Capstone/end set. It’s the finale of the 3-year story arc starting with Wilds of Eldraine. The giant storyline is split into 3 mini arcs, Omenpath Arc, Dragonstorm Arc, and [Redacted] Arc. Being compared to War of the Spark and March of the Machine. We don’t know anything else about this set. Kinda neat that the next big arc ends with the alphabet keywords. It will truly be a fresh start with the next A xD.
Wow ok so 3 years ahead in magic. These last few Maro said were still in vision design, wild to see so far ahead. There’s a lot of potential here! I’m curious to see how it all goes :D

Finality counters
In the teaser for Lost Caverns, maro gave a list of counters that included "finality counters" and further mentioned that one of the counters listed would become deciduous. Here's my guess at it. I was able to guess stun counters in everything but name when he mentioned a new evergreen kind of counter in his DMU teaser, and I'd love to go two for two.
Art links
Incinerating Flames
Restless Gravewalker
Junk Scavenger
Exploring Archaeologist
Card transcriptions below
Four cards
The first
Incinerating Flames 1R Instant [common] Incinerating Flames deals 2 damage to target creature or planeswalker. Put a finality counter on it. (If a permanent with a finality counter on it would die, exile it instead.)
The second
Restless Gravewalker 2B Creature- Zombie [uncommon] When Restless Gravewalker dies, return it to the battlefield with a finality counter on it. (If a creature with a finality counter on it would die, exile it instead.) 3/1
The third
Junk Scavenger 3G Creature- Human Warrior [uncommon] Junk Scavenger enters the battlefield with a finality counter on it. (If a creature with a finality counter on it would die, exile it instead.) When Junk Scavenger enters the battlefield, return target card from your graveyard to your hand. 3/3
The fourth
Exploring Archaeologist 2W Creature- Dwarf Scout [rare] Once during each of your turns, you may cast an artifact or enchantment spell from your graveyard. If you do, it enters the battlefield with a finality counter on it. (If a permanent with a finality counter on it would be put into a graveyard, exile it instead.) 2/3
End transcription

Here is Maro's teaser for "Murders at Karlov Manor". The card 'Murder' is in the set, of course, but I want to know if 'Murder Investigation' is returning. 😉
Maro’s Teaser for Murders at Karlov Manor
Before previews for Murders at Karlov Manor officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I’m only giving you partial information.
First up, here are some things you can expect:
• white gets a card that lets you play a subset off the top of the deck
• a new enchantment subtype Case
• a card with four different hybrid symbols in its mana cost
• a popular mechanic returns tweaked with a new name
• a green sorcery that you can have any number of in your deck
• a keyword mechanic not printed in a premier set since 2008 returns on a single card
• a creature that allows you an alternate nonmana cost for all your spells
• some creature tokens in the set: (note that some have abilities) 0/0 green Ooze, 0/0 colorless Thopter (also artifact), 0/1 green Plant, 1/1 black Bat, 1/1 white Dog, 1/1 red Goblin, 1/1 white Human, 1/1 blue Merfolk, 1/1 white and black Spirit, 1/1 colorless Thopter (also artifact), 2/1 black Skeleton, 2/1 black and green Spider, 2/2 white and blue Detective, 2/2 red Imp, and 5/5 green and white Wolf

• “Then sacrifice it if it has five or more bloodstain counters on it.”
• “you may search your graveyard, hand, and/or library for a card named Magnifying Glass and/or a card named Thinking Cap and put them onto the battlefield.”
• “target opponent gains control of any number of target permanents you control.”
• “If an ability of a creature you control with power 2 or less triggers, that ability triggers an additional time.”
• “As long as there are no cards in your library,”
• “If one or more tokens would be created under your control, those tokens plus a Clue token are created instead.”
• “Whenever you sacrifice a Clue, target opponent gets two poison counters.”
Here are some creature type lines from the set:
• Creature – Vedalken Artificer Detective
• Creature – Ogre Cleric

• Creature – Lammasu
• Creature – Weird Detective
• Creature – Goblin Bard
• Creature – Viashino Assassin
• Artifact Creature – Clue Fish

Finally, here are some names in the set:
• Airtight Alibi
• Caught Red-Handed

• Person of Interest
• Private Eye
• Scene of the Crime
Follow the story each day this week and tune into the debut at 9:00 am PT on Jan 16 on twitch.tv/magic or youtube.com/@mtg to learn whodunit! Can you solve the mystery before detective extraordinaire Alquist Proft?

as insane as Heliod's fate is, I am both relieved and disappointed that MaRo didn't instead just drop "Legendary Creature - Phyrexian God" in his teaser with no context.

saw ur ask thing
u know what I'm gonna say
A-
I THINK THIS IS THE POST THIS ASK WAS MEANT FOR AND I'M FINALLY GETTING TO IT A YEAR OR SO LATER LMFAO I'M SO SORRY MARO
Answers under cut cuz they're all kinda long ^^
First impression: Too cool for school tbh. Like the best comparison I have for it is hearing people hype up the quarterback for like a high school football team in a movie and thinking to yourself, "He's an idiot, isn't he?" The kinda guy that's liked for the shallowest of reasons—either his looks or what he can get people rather than his skills or personality. Perhaps not a fraud... but not all that impressive either. This is all cuz of how he was introduced before his teasers came out. All we had to judge him off of was all the other characters' talking him up in their voice lines, so before he actually dropped, I was just sitting there thinking to myself god, is he really all that they're making him out to be or is it the fact that Mondstadt has no mandatory education program? I was sure I wouldn't be caught in his web.
Impression now: Well, I dropped $100 on him back in the day during his first banner, so I think we all know what I thought of him after I actually got the chance to MEET him
Favorite moment: God that's a toughie tbh... I know you hate that all of his appearances are limited events but I personally LOVE that fact because it means that everyone who's never played the game just hearing people talk him up probably all have the same first impression that I did LMAO. But if I have to pick a moment... well... "Destroy Mondstadt, destroy everything." is PROBABLY when I fell in love with him? Just realizing how lonely and isolated he is because he didn't know how to connect with people is so relatable too, and with the addition of Dragonspine at the time when we were bone dry for content? Yeah, I think that's gotta be my fave moment, though him stabbing his double was pretty hot too LMFAO
Idea for a story: I have this really goofy (but also angsty at the right times) story in my drafts that I never finished where Diluc and Kaeya have to actually get along with each other for once to Sus Out his Susiness™
Unpopular opinion: This is more of a headcanon than anything, but do you guys ever think that his modesty originates from a rather forced place? Like I imagine he was super cold and unemotional about most things while with Rhinedottir, just solely thinking about his own efficiency and results more than his feelings. So what if he wasn't always the kind of guy to gently brush off any declarations of him being a genius? What if, before he started uncovering the natural beauty of the world for what it is rather than what it gets him, he wasn't very good at gracefully accepting compliments? Someone would say he's good at something and he responds with a toneless, "Naturally." I mean, to back this up, his vision story quite literally says he was not surprised to receive one. Maybe Timaeus was the ultimate test when it came to having patience with the slower people in a similar field as him LMFAO
Favorite relationship: Kaebedo for life.
...Wait, you mean canonically? Fine then, him being Klee's big brother is my favorite thing ever. Being pen pals with Scara is pretty great too though LMFAO ty Irodori festival
Favorite headcanon: In that story I have in my drafts, I have a part where he practically dives under a table to grab a snack—said snack being a spider. Or maybe the one where Klee gets into the habit of doing his braids for him. Or maaaaybe the one where Rhinedottir just left him all alone to figure it out on his own one day because she realized she was actively hindering him from becoming as human as she'd like him to be with her frigid teachings and meticulous nature. Because if he's not human enough, he's a failure, of course.
Anyway... That was a lot LMAO. Sorry for typing so much and to anyone who read this, I hope you enjoyed LMFAO
#the character we're talking about is albedo btw#albedo genshin impact#tho you'd probably want my impression on Scara now :333#wouldn't you Maro? >:3
