Were you bothered by the middle of Jim and Oluwande's character arcs seemingly being taken out in an executive attempt to hide the Polycule Jenkins and company had clearly crafted for us? Did you hear about the plot about Ed and Stede being so horny for each other that Roach and Wee John decided to take action which was cut for unknowable reasons and get mad because that was literally better than the episode 6 we got? Did you feel like Ed's probation didn't really come to a satisfying conclusion? If some or all of these things about season 2 annoyed you this is the fic for you. Inside you'll find a version of episode 6 that's a bit longer, but adds back in all the missing pieces that a limited budget and executive meddling took out in a way which contains itself to just that episode, allowing you to mentally patch this fic in on top of the Calypso's birthday episode, but have the rest of the season remain the same. With two commercial breaks (i.e. three chapters) and a post credit scene. Some scenes are ripped directly, which I wrote in script format to make them go faster if I felt they did not benefit from a rewrite in some way, but much of this fic is original content heavily inspired by cast interviews.

Casting the OFMD Pride and Prejudice AU. (spoilers I guess? The book is 200 years old, if I spoil it, then I spoil it)

Starting with the major pairings:

Mr. Bingley and Jane- hopelessly in love, of course, Stede and Ed.

Mr. Darcy and Lizzy- Darcy is smart, competent, but generally perceived as an asshole. I give you, Mr. Izzy Hands. But as we all know, Izzy is the fandom bicycle. So who is our clever, cheeky, and a little bit mouthy Lizzy Bennet? Lucius it is.

Lydia and Mr Wickham- This one’s a bit cheeky, but it’s my tumblr and I do what I want. And I fully blame @msmhari for Wickham. Lydia is Archie. Don’t worry- we’ll get back to her. She’ll be just fine. Wickham is Ricky. He dies of natural causes. Murder is a natural cause right?

Now let’s round out our families. First, the Bennet Sisters: Kitty and Mary will be played by Frenchie and Wee John. They share a room.

Lady Catherine is Auntie. Terrifying and knows it. Unless you’re Lizzy.

Mary is the woman that Mr. Bingley (Stede) was rumoured to be courting when he fucked off to London for a bit. Meanwhile Jane (Ed) is moping to Lizzy in her pillow fort.

Not entirely sure what to do with Buttons, but hey, that’s nothing new.

There are two very important characters left. Mr and Mrs Bennet. And personally, my favorite of our little fan cast.

Mr Bennet is the leader of this little mess. He created it. Brought it into the world. This is his circus and these are his monkeys. Thus I give you, the Daddy of our little crew, David Jenkins.

So who is the counterpoint to our producer and creator? The organizer who steers the ship? Mrs Bennet loves pairing up her daughters, and clowns just as hard as any of the fans. Silly and a bit chaotic, and really just wants to see Jane get all Mooney over her husband?

Summary:

He could feel nothing but the burning in his lungs as he breathed in the fiery air, thick with smoke and ash. He should be grateful perhaps, that Zheng didn’t get to finish the job, but he doesn’t know if he can feel much of anything right now. They were leaving him.

He’d maybe known this day would come, he knew it would eventually but he hadn’t thought it would happen so quickly, and on the same day he lost Ed.

He deserved that too he supposed, Ed had finally realised he wasn’t worth it and left.

‘I think last night was a mistake.’ That was what he’d said, wasn’t it? A mistake. And the worst thing is that Stede knew he was right.

Edward Teach was far from the only pirate captain fascinated by Stede Bonnet. Captain Nicholas Hawthorn has had his eye on the strange gentlemen for quite a while now and when he hears that Blackbeard has left his love to live a life of a simple fisherman, the opportunity to strike is too good for Nicholas to resist. All the while Stede, feeling rejected by the people he loves, lets himself be taken in and pampered by this handsome stranger, not knowing that Captain Hawthorn has far more sinister plans for him.

Accidentally kidnapping a mafia boss: Stede/Ed SciFi AU 500K slowburn. Stede is the more-or-less outcast son of the wealthy Bonnet crime family who was never hard enough for The Life. He's selling his fully automated, self-sustaining space ship because Mary refuses to move to the exciting new colony on Mars. Ed fought his way to the top but now wants nothing more than to get out of The Life & idly investigates this ship as an option for doing so, but is MUCH more enthusiastic when this weird, charming, (attractive) man offers to show him around. During the tour, Stede accidentally activates the controls that seal the doors & initiate launch. There's no crew aboard & he has no idea how to stop or reverse it. They are stuck until they get to Mars in 7 months. Stede is mortified. Ed is delighted. Ed's crew thinks Stede must have done it on purpose & are determined to get their boss back. And retribution

Really nice guy who hates only you: Stede & Izzy Fairytale(ish) AU. Also a 500K slow-burn but it's their burning enmity for one another. Ricky is a nearly omnipotent, but deeply childish, magical creature who can manipulate scenarios to get what he wants. What he wants is for his 2 very favoritest pirates in the whole wide world to fall madly in love. You can't just MAKE people fall in love, but you can certainly engineer circumstances that would RESULT in people falling in love. So he does that. Their lives become a never-ending nightmarish sequence of meet-cutes & perilous situations in which they must rely on one another to survive. Everyone in their lives keeps commenting that this is clearly an enemies-to-lovers thing. Izzy starts to become convinced. Stede would rather die.

Academic rivals except it’s two teachers who compete to have the best class: Frenchie & Wee John, but Frenchie is teaching advanced stats & Wee John is teaching home ec, so they're not even in the same department, but Best Teacher of The Year always comes down to a heated competition between the 2 of them. They are secretly dating & keep a tally of their victories.

Divorce of convenience: Stede & Mary, obvs. That's just canon.

Too much communication: Also Stede & Mary, but this is a really sad story about their 1st year of marriage, & how they both REALLY tried to make it work, but how they talk past one another or exacerbated the situation by talking about things the other didn't connect with until all they really wanted is for the other person to shut up & stop being so annoying. This is the story of how Stede retreated into his books & Mary into her big glass of wine.

True hate’s kiss (only kissing your enemy can break a curse): Part of the Stede & Izzy AU. The only way to break the curse that Ricky has put them under is for them to kiss & for him to see how completely wrong & off-putting they are together.

Dating your enemy’s sibling: Canon-divergence fic where Stede knows he's gay from the start & distracts Nigel by flirting with him (badly). Nigel is one of those disgusting dudes who expresses his interest by being cruel & has always been into Stede, so he goes for it. Stede is in hell, but has to keep up the charade to keep his crew safe. He has to resort to increasingly outlandish gambits to excuse why he can't (won't) sleep with Nigel. Eventually he meets Ed; it's instantaneous sparks. At some point they end up kissing & Nigel sees it (possibly Stede confides his situation to Ed & Ed is trying to help?). It's a horrible, messy break-up with lots of shouting & breaking of Stede's stuff, but Nigel fucks off. Chauncey still comes after Stede for "defiling his dear brother".

Lovers to enemies: How Annie & Mary got to be Like That.

Hate at first sight: Stede & Izzy. Also just canon.

Love triangle where the two love interests get together instead: Canon divergence fic where, when Jim goes to plead Olu's case with Zheng, the two of them really hit it off & decide they're going to run away together & have their own boatmance.

Fake amnesia: A bedraggled figure approaches the inn, with nothing but the clothes on his back, a past he can't remember, & the singular conviction that his name is John. That's right - it's Calico Jack, back from the grave. Ed & Stede warily agree to help him get on his feet. But is his memory truly as blank as he claims? Pfft. Of course it's not. He's totally faking & out for revenge.

Soulmates who are fated to kill each other: Ed/Stede but they manage to cheat fate by means of fuckeries that just make it LOOK like each of them killed the other.

Strangers to enemies: Also just Stede & Izzy. Also just canon.

Instead of fake dating, everyone is convinced that you aren’t actually dating: It's fine. Really. It's gotten to the point that Stede just rolls with it now. He & Ed will go out to dinner & the server will bring them separate checks without asking. They'll go out dancing & some young buck will insinuate his way past Stede to dance all up on Ed. Stede isn't bothered. He knows Ed will dance his way back to him eventually. They go out for a drink & when Ed goes off to the bathroom, some hopeful will approach Stede & ask him to put in a good word with his friend. He used to make a game out of guessing whether the response to his insistence that, "He's my boyfriend, actually" would be "Good one, mate!" or "Is this a Make-a-Wish kind of situation" or even just an incredulous "You? Naaaah". But he's long since stopped even insisting now. They never believe him. So he has learned to deal with bartenders who slip Ed a phone number on a cocktail napkin along with his drink, & ingenues that bat their eyelashes at him & flash their cleavage, & the occasional poet or minstrel that publicly dedicates their newest work to Ed, or even those "modeling agents" that try to press their business cards on him. It's fine. It is. Really it is. Because at the end of the day, he knows that Ed is coming home with HIM.

Too hot to cuddle: Stede/Ed Post-canon - the weather on the island has been unrelentingly hot for weeks now with a humidity index that feels like you're wading through the air. Touching is unbearable. Even moving is unimaginable. It's so hot that neither of them can even bear to wear clothes. And that is NOT helping how sexually frustrated they're both feeling without any contact.

Love interest CEO is a himbo/bimbo who runs their company into the ground: Pretty sure this is just a Two Weeks Notice AU? Twist! Himbo Stede is the love interest of rival (but not rival for long) business owner Ed, & Long-suffering Hyper-competent Secretary That's ACTUALLY Keeping Everything Afloat, Lucius, is the love interest to Ed's Right Hand Man, Pete.

Nursing home au: (Anyone who knows about the STI rates at Assisted Care Facilities knows that they're basically non-stop knock shops.) Stede established the Revenge Floating Retirement Community with the intention of helping seniors "sail off into the sunset with dignity." He didn't anticipate exactly how amorous people get once they no longer have to worry about pregnancy & have ready access to Viagra & Astroglide. And it doesn't help that possibly his crew are bed-hopping just as much as their charges? So now he finds himself in a cross between a French Door Farce & and 80s sex comedy with octogenarians. Which might not be quite so dispiriting if it didn't seem like everyone was having sex except Stede. If only someone could help him learn he doesn't have to be so rigid.

Hello, I am slowly figuring out how to use tumblr effectively. I thought I'd give an update on fics I've written in 2024, but keep forgetting to talk about here in a meaningful way.

As We Go Hand in Hand (explicit, gentlebeard, 7100 words) follows Ed as he processes the past few months while living on the island with Stede, massively in love but struggling with himself. I wrote it while feeling a lot of delayed grief around the (confirmed) s2 cancellation, and while it's sad at points it's also quite romantic I think. I really love this story.

Behind Closed Eyes All I See is You (explicit, gentlebeard, 5300 words) is a smutty PWP my dear friend @chaoticturtleturtle invited me to write with her. Stede lets Ed take the lead in a scene with some sensory deprivation, pwp, and aftercare.

like sugar to my heart (mature, gentlebeard, 4200 words) is a silly fic I wrote for my Animorphs OFMD AU co-writer as a birthday gift. Our blue four-legged four-eyed mouthless alien Stedeth gets foiled by a vending machine (based on the tumblr art of the giraffe centaur), and Ed consoles him.

like a bird (teen, gentlebeard, 3700 words) with @ghostalservice gives some backstory about Stedeth's life prior to the events of our 177k fic and features some very cute art of Mary and Stede's children (as Andalites, of course) by @theogem

Stede’s Cursed Red Suit as a Metaphor for Grief and Moving On (teen, stede + izzy, 1717 words) explores the squishy time of season 2, episode 5, and the dynamic between Stede and Izzy in season 2 overall. I am also obsessed with how Stede acts in the cursed suit. I find their s2 relationship really interesting so this is me looking a bit at that via a missing scene starting with Stede yelling OH FUCK OFF.

Calypso’s Dawn (explicit, gentlebeard, 1800 words) centers around how Ed made his boyfriend blush the morning after Calypso's birthday and how Ed feels about it. I love this fic. I've been trying to challenge myself to write more self-contained, shorter stories and this one turned out really well imo.

Life as a Series of Forward Rolls (teen, gentlebeard, 9900 words) features Stede running into his teenhood crush, the gold medalist in men's gymnastics from the 1996 Olympics. This fic also centers around a Barbie doll in Ed Teach's likeness, which @swashbuckling-sweethearts made an INCREDIBLE art of (embedded at the end of the story), inspired by my own 1996 Olympics Barbie. Silly and light modern AU!

Did you mean to do that? (teen, gentlebeard, 700 words) explores Stede's grief around Ed dying, even when he knows Ed is alive. I had no idea I would be so interested in writing missing scenes, but long conversations with friends have really ignited me in exploring these. (The length - I was trying to channel @brigdh, whose ability to write devastatingly brilliant drabbles inspires me, and I'm pleased with this one!)

Perfectly Ordinary Tuesday (mature, gentlebeard, 4900 words) with @ferventrabbit follows Stede and Ed deciding to get married on a perfectly ordinary Tuesday, and drag their inn guest Dave along for the ride. We split up writing the vows, and I balled my eyes out writing mine and then reading em's. This story is fluffy and fun, and it was a great way to start 2024. :)

What's next: I'm working on or noodling a lot of projects, solo and with different collaborators. Imminently, I've got a fic with @veeagainsttheday coming for AUpril on April 1st. Hoping to get something else out in April for @ofmdjanuaury's AUpril 2024 event, which I highly encourage folks to check out - it's for all sorts of creators!

@ghostalservice and I continue to think about our blue alien Stede and his human boyfriend Ed. Wanna Fly Away was such an important project to me while we were writing, and it's become even more special as folks find it. WFA now has art embedded in most of the 15 chapters, so if you haven't seen those check it out. More to come in that space.

Where was I going with this? Well, I suppose I want to say I'm still here. OFMD changed my life, and the OFMD fandom community is deeply important to me. I still hold out hope for a third season, or a follow-up that brings us more closure, but no matter what I'm still thinking about our pirates and will for a long time.
