Rewatching for the 1000th time and I have to say how brilliant Zheng is with people. For each person she adjusts to be who they want her to be in that moment so that she can get the upper hand.

For Jackie, Zheng is the equal with money to trade. Jackie doesn’t care about anything else so Zheng keeps it straightforward.

With John Bartholomew, she’s angry at the English, but still sweet so that she isn’t a threat to him after the raid. She bonds with him so that all he wants is to help the sweet woman in front of him

With Stede, in episode 3 she is the girlfriend, pulling trust and information out of him while making him feel understood. She’s brilliant because she gets the info she wants from him (to also determine if he is at all a threat) and makes him feel like they are equal or he’s understood even when she gives nothing away to him except what she wants. Later, in episodes 7&8 they are on more even ground so she is more open with her judgement and opinions. She doesn’t need him and makes that clear, but she also helps him reconnect with Ed so he’s wormed his way in a bit.

With Ricky, she’s the planner, doing all of the work for him while stroking his ego and vanity and promising that he can take the glory.

I’d argue that she is most herself with Ed because they are equals and can both hold their own without needing something from the other. They also met in battle so of course you’re going to already have trust with someone who literally had your back.

Someone mentioned Olu (I can’t believe I originally forgot him!); She’s more open with him, and I think much of this is because they got to know each other at the soup stand. She tries her tough/in control persona when she tries to seduce him, but when that doesn’t work, she’s willing to be more vulnerable. I don’t think this is a manipulation like with the others, so I can’t imagine how hard that would have been to finally be vulnerable with someone and then see them pick someone else/sail off.

Her relationship with Auntie is complicated, but any adult child will tell you that as soon as they get with their parents, the dynamic changes.

She gives a masterclass in understanding your opponent and being a chameleon to get what you want. I sincerely hope we get to see more of her in a season 3!

All The Soup - A Jim, Oluwande, Archie, & Zheng-centric Fic Collection

Hey OFMD folks who are fans of Jim, Oluwande, Archie, and Zheng!! I did a thing and made a fic collection for fics centered around these characters so fics are a bit easier to find!!

AllTheSoup is an Ao3 fic collection for any/all fics where the main character is either Jim, Olu, Archie, or Zheng. Fics must have one of them as the main character for at least ~50% of the time, or a significant portion of the plot.

All ships welcome, including rarepairs like Olu/Frenchie, Jim/Lucius, etc, so long as one of the main characters of the fic continues to be either Jim, Oluwande, Archie, or Zheng.

The purpose of this fic collection is to make it easier for people to find Jim, Olu, Archie, or Zheng-centric fics. Hence, fics need to have one of them as a main character, and the main focus, for a significant portion of the plot!

This is specifically to avoid fics that are, for example, Ed/Stede focused, with a minor inclusion of Jim/Olu. Those fics are really frequent, and fandom tagging practice makes it a lot harder to find fics focused on Jim/Olu/Archie/Zheng. Hence, this collection!

I'm going to be going through my bookmarks and combing the archive over the summer to add things, but it may take a while! So please, please feel free to add your own fics or invite faves of yours to the collection.

Bro I’m sorry, Oluwande/Zheng was NOT well written

I get that negativity isn’t in style and that’s a good thing, but it’s ok to vent some frustration.

Oluwande and Zheng did not have genuine chemistry, which makes the unceremonious split (ish??) of TealOranges twist the knife even more. Have you noticed how many times they talk about being “the break in their day”? That’s cause it’s pretty much ALL they friggin’ have! They don’t feel like a living breathing relationship learning and growing with each other. They just kinda… smile coyly at each other, and remind each other about that one cool thing Oluwande said.

I love Oluwande so damn much but Zheng did NOT need him. Narratively speaking, writing wise. I mean everyone needs Oluwande in general literally speaking but anyway,) It felt like there was an incredibly compelling and complex character arc for her that was sticking its fingers through the cracks of a completely pointless romantic subplot she was shoehorned her into. I was GENUINELY confused when there was this big defining moment in the finale where her aunt learns she needs to let her niece be “soft”. Aside from literally a couple quick offhand remarks, where tf was that?? I would’ve friggin LOVED to see it though, that sounds profound as fuck. We love nuanced takes of feminism and deconstructing the idea that strength for women is emotional blunting, let’s go!!

It’s just frustrating that these two characters who had such deep things to share individually about abandonment, loss, control, pressure, recovering, rediscovering, etc etc, were instead pushed together into something so shallow because it had almost absolutely no time to develop properly.

sadly the relationship dynamic between zheng and jim needs to be pretty much invented from scratch but the chemistry IS 100% there in canon despite the studio butchering the polycule arc and i say this bc when jim was setting up a date for zheng and olu they told her “olu is rlly into you but jsyk me and him are a package deal” and zheng (who as far as we know was pretty much meeting jim for the first time) looked at them and said “hmmm not a dealbreaker”
