Another invasive (but delicious edible) plant that plagues many a garden, especially on the western and eastern coasts of the US: cardamine hirsuta, or hairy bittercress.
This is a winter annual, and can be found absolutely Thriving long after other plants have died back from cold. This is the time they should be picked, whether for eating or for general removal. They come out of the ground easily, roots and all. If you plan on eating them, choose ones that haven’t gone to flower yet, as the leaves become bitter and tough.
Around mid-spring the plant goes to seed, and at that point you’re fucked – the seedpods will literally EXPLODE at the slightest touch. (I’ve walked through places where they were unavoidable, and it sounds like tiny popcorn!) That’s why they spread so prolifically.
Okay, but what does it taste like? Even though it’s called bittercress, it’s not bitter at all. It’s very similar to other plants in the brassica family… if you like mustard, cress, or arugula, you will like hairy bittercress! It’s slightly peppery, a little mustardy, and more mild than the name suggests. It’s best used raw in salads or sandwiches.
Now go munch on/population control some of those cressy bastards.

So my wife and I have been playing an entirely home-brewed survival ttrpg for The Terror, which I highly recommend. We made up a lot of the rules ourselves, very meticulously, and take turns as the GM, as we have a rough 'plot' outline and have written a ton of 'situation' cards - where we pull a 'situation', have to react and roll accordingly, and then we have to factor anything that happens as a result into the overall narrative we've got going on. (Situations so far include things like a small galley fire, the ship's dog going missing, roll for how much of your tinned food is spoiled, someone falls from the yardarm etc)
The classes are based on rank (officer, seaman, marine, etc) and have different skills, strengths, and weaknesses respectively. It's fantastic.
You can kind of just invent your own guys for it, but we're doing it with the actual characters because it's 1) fun and 2) easier than making up new guys. I'm an author, I make up new guys for a living, I need a BREAK.
We each have three characters and before we pull a 'situation' card, we have to roll to see which of our characters we're playing. I play Hickey, Tozer, and Goodsir. (It's funny because obviously Hickey has the OPTION to Do A Mutiny, but he's done the maths and it looks bleak if he does, so he possibly won't in this game)
ANYWAY all of this to tell you about the funniest possible 'situation' I rolled as Hickey - 'You overhear someone saying it's possible to grow greenery on the warm galley pipes, which might fend off scurvy. What do you do?'
Now this is a real thing Parry successfully did in eighteen-twenty, curing a crewmate of scurvy with mustard and cress grown on the galley pipes. So not nonsense at all.
Naturally I thought, well, Hickey would probably give this a go because 1) it's something to do other than the work he's supposed to be doing and 2) in the unlikely even it's successful, you KNOW he wants that approval from Crozier and 3) he doesn't want scurvy himself.
So what followed was something of a skit with him going from crew member to crew member trying to obtain The Goods to do this guerrilla gardening. Asking people for scraps of wool clothing they couldn't mend to use as some kind of substrate, with everyone being kind of like 'oh god, take it, but whatever you're doing I don't want to know'. Then he had to steal some mustard seeds, and locate a spot unlikely to be noticed to place the whole thing.
It was funny, and I didn't expect it to work, but lo and behold I rolled and had moderate success, and a few days later we had MUSTARD sprouting.
At which point Hickey had to tell SOMEONE about it. It ended up so funny because everyone is like 'wow well done you may have just saved all our lives!' and Hickey was NOT expecting that, this man lives to be a menace and was just trying his luck, so having people genuinely praise him and credit him with having possibly saved lives is just kind of,
Tumblr media
Basically I highly recommend doing something similar.
Let me know if you want to know more updates as the game progresses.
Also I low-key want someone to write a fic about Hickey's guerrilla galley garden lmao.

Right! I'm off to the garden centre today.
My plan is to try and get a tomato plant- there are three centres within 15 minutes of my village so I'm hoping at least one of them pulls through for me.
Also on the agenda for today:
Cress seeds (for my guinea pigs, they go mad for the stuff and it's the only thing I can confidently grow from a seed)
New tools (my old ones got badly damaged when my grow tent fell down)
Lettuces
Container soil
Possible Herbs- I haven't decided which ones yet, but I do want to try mint. No idea what I'll do with it but I'll figure it out. Someone said it goes nicely in tea.

Now that it is autumn I would like you to imagine Maul formally Darth elbow deep in pumpkin guts.
About him are the terrors each with a large pumpkin they had rolled over from the garden. Maul was tasked to aid in the gutting of the gourds. The zabrak might have once said it was beneath him, but instead he settled on the ground and got to work. The pumpkin guts are spread out. Small hands plucking out the seeds.
“We shall roast them.” Maul told them.
“And salt them!” The little terrors cheered.
“And maybe a little cinnamon sugar!” Added Cress already patting him tummy. “And other pumpkins can be used for a yummy pie!”
Maul chuckled at his son, “ The harvest season is your favorite isn’t it?”
The young zabrak nodded, “ it is! But sadly no fresh berries.”
“Alas we can’t have it all..” Maul sighed, “ But your buir made jam.”
The boy nodded, “ Enough for the winter!”
“We shall see won’t we.”

half a teaspoon each of flaxseed and sesame seeds
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (feel free to add less, i like the acidity)
1/2 tablespoon of sunflower oil
salt and pepper to taste
i shave the carrots into thin ribbons, with a vegetable peeler. after that i just add the ingredients together and let the salad sit for around 10 minutes.
the result should look something like this! :)

Breaking Down Over Plants
I’ve been thinking about using plants in costume breakdown for a while. I know from gardening in the summer that plant roots can run deep and cause all sorts of havoc so I wanted to see what would happen to my costumes when plants were allowed to grow on the fabric.
My hope with this experiment is that I’ll see some interesting-looking damage to the costume piece that I am breaking down. Ideally, the roots will burrow down into the fabric, and as they grow and warp and change the fabric.
I am starting with a vest that I made for Stanpipe, It’s made of cream scuba suede and lined with a cotton plant print fabric taken from the remnants of a curtain. I really like how it turned out but it's way too clean and pristine for Stanpipe, even if the plants end up doing nothing I’ll still be doing a lot of ageing and distressing to get a rotten and decayed effect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have a whole packet of cress seeds and I’m going to apply them to the front of the vest and then if successful the back. I’m going to try my best to let the cress live out its full life cycle. I will care for the cress in the same way I would a regular cress plant and will be attempting to keep it growing for as long as possible. I’m going to see if I can make a time lapse of the growth as I go.
Day one was very boring, I dampened the vest and laid it out on a tray, then I spread the cress seeds out on the front. Cress is a quick grower so we should see germination in the next few days.

Meducoid Mycelium Cure
So I've had this theory for quite a while and thought I would share it. I would like to clarify that I don't have any type of high education in chemistry or biology so take this with a grain of sugar. This theory doesn't cover the sugar bowl or the apples in the arboretum.
So, as a bit of context, this theory came to be when I was doing an in depth re-watch of A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix) and by in depth I mean pausing at least every 5 minuets to have a debate with my friend. We noticed that at 4 points rutabagas were mentioned, and mentioning something once is fine, twice is a coincidence, thrice is suspicious and quadrice means that its important. 2 of the times rutabagas were mentioned were in areas where you had to pause to see (Rutabaga River and rutabagas mentioned in 'An Incomplete History of Secret Organisations'). the other 2 times was Esme having a basket of rutabagas and Colette (or Kevin) saying how they could start a rutabaga farm.
My first thought was that it was a substitute for horseradish but because I have no culinary knowledge (and have never had horseradish, wasabi or rutabagas so I have no idea if they even tasted similar) I went to reddit to find if they knew but I only had two answers, one person said that using rutabagas to cure the Meducoid Mycelium would be useless and the other said maybe as they are both spicy vegetables.
But I wasn't satisfied so I did my own digging.
I figured that if both horseradish and wasabi cure the Meducoid Mycelium they mush share a chemical of sort so I googled it. Apparently they share a chemical called Allyl isothiocyanate (AIT). I got this from this website. so you can judge how true this is. Also on that website it mentioned that AIT is well known to prohibit bacteria and fungal growth (this is on sentence 3, this is the direct quote 'It is well known that AIT shows inhibitory effect on the growth of food poisoning bacteria and fungi.').
I then went digging and the website is right AIT is a fungicide. Also I went digging some more about other foods with AIT in it and this is the list Wasabi, Horseradish, broccoli, radish, cabbage, mustard and other cruciferous vegetables (I got this information in this website on the first paragraph of the introduction).
so I did my final bit of research of what more examples of cruciferous vegetables and here is the final list of foods that should cure the Meducoid Mycelium: Horseradish, Land cress, Ethiopian mustard, Kale, Chinese broccoli, Cabbage, Savoy cabbage, Brussels sprouts, Kohlrabi, Broccoli, Broccolini, Broccoloflower, Broccoli romanesco, Chinese cabbage, Cauliflower, Wild broccoli, Komatsuna, Mizuna, Rapini (broccoli rabe), Choy sum (flowering cabbage), Chinese cabbage (napa cabbage), Turnip roots, Siberian kale, Canola/rapeseed, Wrapped heart mustard cabbage, Mustard seeds, White mustard seeds, Black mustard seeds, Tasoi, Wild arugula, Arugula, Field pepperweed, Maca, Garden cress, Watercress, Radish, Daikon, Wasabi and yes Rutabaga.
(this is my proof of were I got these . I know its Wikipedia but I trust it with this. )

all of nature for miss cress <33
details about ocs ask meme
🌈 RAINBOW — what is your oc's sexual orientation/gender identity? what pronouns do they use?
cress is a lesbian, she/her.
🎄 CHRISTMAS TREE — what is your oc's favorite holiday?
she had never celebrated a holiday, at least not in the traditional sense, until her first midsummer festival with shart post-game. they make the trek back to baldur's gate and spend the week meandering through markets, eating far too many sweet tarts, and drinking wine with astarion when he arrives back in the city on the second day. cress makes sure to buy a fresh batch of flower seeds for their garden back home.
🐶 DOG FACE — does your oc have any pets?
cress has never been good with animals, and also never quite trusted herself with a small, innocent creature. eventually, once there's a few years between them and bhaal and the absolute and shar, shart brings home a stray puppy she found wandering the nearby woods. it's good for cress.
🐈 CAT — does your oc prefer a wide circle of friends or a few close friends?
a few close ones, definitely! she's still so new to the idea of friendship, so any more than a few can get overwhelming and hard for her to manage.
🐷 PIG FACE — what is your oc's favorite animal?
she envies birds, for their ability to fly away. mostly, she decides she likes dogs for their loyalty and affection.
🐉 DRAGON — what is your oc's favorite mythical creature?
most 'mythical' creatures she's encountered have tried to kill her in one way or another, so she's not a fan of most of them. maybe a phoenix, for the ressurection of it all?
🍃 LEAVES FLUTTERING IN WIND — what is/was your oc's favorite subject in school?
cress was never formally educated, although asmodeus did employ a few private tutors over the years to ensure she could accimilate into society easily. they taught her reading and history and politics. cress always preferred those lessons to the ones on magic.
🌴 PALM TREE — does your oc have a green thumb? do they enjoy gardening?
definitely not! everything about her has been conditioned and moulded to kill and manipulate, not nurture and grow. even after everything, shart is the one who does most of the gardening. cress will admit that she likes being in nature though.
🍎 RED APPLE — where was your oc born? do they still live in/around their place of birth or do they live somewhere else? how do they feel about their birthplace?
cress was born in the hollows of bhaal's temple, to an unknown woman who had been plucked off the streets of menzoberranzan and implanted with the bhaal's seed. she lived in the darkened corners of the temple until she was around 3, hidden away, before she was smuggled from the temple by one of the chambermaids. she didn't set foot back in the place for around 20 years; instead, she spent most of her formative years in the halls of Fortress Nessus. despite the horrors of asmodeus' citadel and the devils that haunted her every step, she still considers that more of a home than bhaal's temple of murder ever was.

Edible Herbs, Flowers, and Greens
It's a riot of colors and flavors with Borage, Dill, Cilantro, Arugula, Parsley, Yellow Cress, and purple, green and fine leaved mustards.
I let them bloom and reseed year to year, and now this part of the garden is left to it's own nature. I planted most of these about 6-10 years ago and I have never needed to purchase any more seed to keep it going. I love it.

Halim Seeds or Aliv Seeds: Benefits for Menstrual Health
Superfoods like nuts, spices, and seeds offer powerful health benefits. Halim seeds (Aliv or garden cress seeds) are nutrient-packed and beneficial for women’s menstrual health.
These little red seeds contain iron, folate, fiber, vitamins C, A, and E, and protein. Let’s discuss the benefits and importance of halim seeds during periods and how to consume them.
 What are Halim Seeds?
Halim seeds are tiny, reddish-brown seeds from the garden cress plant (*Lepidium sativum*). Known for their peppery taste, they are used medicinally to regulate blood sugar and combat bacteria.
Chemicals in garden cress leaves and seeds can reduce blood sugar and could also help fight certain viruses and bacteria.
How Halim Seeds Benefit Menstrual Health
1. Regulate Periods:
   - Compounds in Halim seeds mimic estrogen, promoting hormone balance and restoring regular cycles.
2. Treat Anemia:
   - Rich in iron, they increase red blood cells and hemoglobin, addressing iron deficiency.
3. Relieve Cramps:
   - Anti-inflammatory properties reduce menstrual pain without medication.
4. Maintain Blood Sugar Levels:
   - Fiber content slows glucose absorption, preventing blood sugar spikes.
Additional Benefits of Halim Seeds
- Boost Immunity: Vitamin C strengthens the immune system.
- Enhance Lactation: Promote breast milk production by stimulating hormones.
- Aid in Weight Loss:  High protein content curbs hunger and maintains muscle mass.
- Prevent Hair Loss: Iron improves hair health by promoting scalp circulation.
- Reduce Breast Cancer Risk: Antioxidants protect cells from damage.
- Improve Skin Health: Omega-3 fatty acids keep skin soft and hydrated.
- Relieve Constipation: Aid digestion and prevent indigestion.
How to Consume Halim Seeds
- Soaked Seeds: Eat after soaking in water for a few hours.
- Smoothies: Add soaked seeds for extra nutrition.
- Salads: Sprinkle seeds on salads.
- Ladoo: Combine seeds with milk, coconut, and jaggery.
- Sprouts: Use sprouts in chutneys, raitas, or sandwiches.

ORGANIC GARDEN CRESS (HALIM/ ASALIYA) SEED OIL
Free radicals that circulate throughout the body induce cell damage, damage skin cells, and are responsible for pigmentation, dulling of skin, loss of hair color, and other symptoms of oxidative stress. It contains high levels of antioxidants such as tocopherols, phenols, and phytosterols. These chemicals can completely remove free radical activity and protect the organism from oxidative stress. Pure Garden Cress Seed Oil is recognized for its hair advantages, one of which is dandruff removal. It combats dandruff on two fronts: first, it nourishes the scalp profoundly, preventing it from becoming dry and flaky. Second, it lowers irritation and itching, which are both causes and effects of dandruff. Dandruff is less likely to occur on a healthy, hydrated scalp.

The Fortress gardens were greenhouses deep within the Labryinth of caves. The irrigation supplied by the River that was within the very same caves.
At first the Garden had been meant as a reprieve, like they once had on Sundari before the Siege, as the year passed this was no longer the case. With dwindling supplies likely as the Empire continued to grow in power it was clear the Gardens would be more of a necessity.
Angel planted the many seeds, they had collected. Little Ares and Eris and even little Feral toddled about their tiny toes squishing the loose dirt.
Savage helped till the ground for more.
Starlight had tugged their fine clothes up and hands in the earth. The first batch of carrots. Little Aster pawing at the earth alongside her Buir.
Cressie munching away at a fresh carrot with delight already eyeing another from the pile.
It was Maul who stared angrily at the gardens. What were they doing? What did they lower themselves to doing?
Little Cress raises up a carrot to Maul, offering the food with a smile.
Maul gives a half hearted smile.
“He pulled that one all by himself!” His Starlight says, there’s a look upon their face that Maul looks away from. Understanding? Concern?
—-
“We were meant to give them all they needed.”
Savage frowns at his brothers pacing.
“Brother we have.”
“Planting food? Making stores of supplies?”
“It is more than either of us were ever given and you know this. We are giving them all they need, it may not be what you envisioned.”
Maul still held the carrot in his hand.
“It is not.”
“I can’t change what you desire, but do try to remind yourself that your Star and your children are safe and cared for.”
Savage leaves his brother to once again help. His own little ones eagerly going up to show him sweet potatoes they would happily have roasted later.
Maul watches as his Star and his own children continue to dig at the earth. Content and smiles as they find more.
It is not what he had envisioned….but It was what they needed…
