I think the fact that Mavuika is the only character in Genshin to ride a motorcycle must be actually kinda terrifying. Like, there are no other motorcycles. Nobody on Teyvat has the context of what a motorcycle is to even prepare them for the sight. This is scarier even than the girl who rides that huge fuck-off gun, because at least they know what guns are.

But when they see a redhead in a leather skintight leather suit riding towards them on a giant, roaring metal behemoth and then pummel them directly to the face with it??

Like, does she even use pyro? I'm pretty sure she just commits vehicular manslaughter for her burst. Her real element is blunt force trauma.

I have a theory that the reason AAA devs are spooked and don't want for Baldur's Gate 3 to be the standard is because if it becomes the standard, they would be expected to produce the same quantity and quality for a game but with none of the advantages Larian had.

Larian is a studio of long-standing, who produces several successful games, and they had experienced and passionate employees and leadership who cared about this project.

AAA studios, with their habit of firing whole teams after shipping a game and mandating crunch until they crush devs' spirits, not to mention their tendency towards squelching creative freedom and forcing their devs to churn out only the most marketable version of any idea, would be terrible about producing similar games. They'd crack the whip harder, burn through employees faster, and crush their workforce even more than they already do in the pursuit of reaching the standard of Baldur's Gate 3.

Triple A game devs really out there showing their asses, huh?

And why the hell not? Why shouldn't players expect more than half-finished, bug-filled games with tons of microtransactions? Why should they settle for playing regurgitated copies of whatever games have been popular for the past ten years when they could be playing games that the devs were actually passionate about making?

When you have access to a bigger budget and more resources than Larian did when they made BG3, what's your excuse for shipping a broken, half-assed mess of a game?

on a less off-the-cuff note I feel like horror is a good genre to use for critical interventions on the “cozy farming sim” style of game. like there is a baseline settler colonialism & christianity baked into a lot of the mechanics/conventions in farming sims (player character being offered a vast ‘empty’ plot of ‘undeveloped’ land, digging up “ancient artefacts” to donate to a museum, an emphasis on getting away from the city to return to more traditional/small town living, marriage and children as the natural end state of the game, etc) that are genuinely horrifying when you think about them lol. a game highlighting the horror of those conventions would be really fun to play I think
