I finally convinced myself to repaint my Mystic Kids Miri in (mellowed) normal pink skin. She’s an old gal, I’ve had her since 2013, maybe 2014, I think?

Let’s compare the Faceup to her old one:

Her new Faceup turned out much brighter than her previous. It bothered me for years now that her eye detailing didn’t match her wig as she’d been wearing a dark blue wig forever years.

Ok so I feel like the best way to combat the deluge of recasts is to promote more affordable doll brands, so I'm gonna give it a shot!

Here's a list of some more affordable legit bjd brands, their general price ranges, and where to buy them! All of these are complete dolls (body+head). The lowest prices listed are from their smallest sizes no faceup, and the highest prices will be largest with faceup if they offer it. Prices can vary between dealers. (Please add more if you know some, especially for outside the US!)

Also some of these upper prices seem insanely high because they include any 70cm beasts they have as well, but I mainly judged these based on the 1/4 dolls being under or around 300 with faceup, since that's typically the most popular size.

Qianhe ($70-116) 1/6, 1/5, and 1/4 male and female resin blind box bjds. Realistic style. Available on Janesdolland, and until 8/02 you can choose the head you want from the blind boxes.

Sprouting Dragon ($68-138): 1/6 and 1/4 female resin bjds. Anime style. On Janesdolland.

UFDoll ($56-155): 1/6, 1/4, and 1/3 PVC bjds, both male and female, both anime and realistic available. The 1/6 fullset blindbox dolls are available on Kikasgoods and Janesdolland. Others are on Janesdolland and LegendDoll.

Evantasy ($125.80-412.05): 1/6, 1/4, and 1/3 resin bjds, all female but 1. Anime style. On Janesdolland and LegendDoll.

ImomoDoll ($15-145): 1/12, 1/6, and 1/4 vinyl mjds. Both males and females. Anime style, good sub for MDDs and Puyoodoll. On Janesdolland, New Clover Singing, and LegendDoll.

Made my first yarn wig for Ophelia the other day. This is only a tester wig, as she demands a silver one, but that’ll come in time. I can’t stop admiring her, she’s so gorgeous, though I am considering redoing her faceup.

Can’t wait for the motivation and time to do more than just admire her.. ~

Apropos nothing, which of your antique dolls is your favorite (or at least, which one do you like very much—I know picking a favorite is hard)?

Oh man.

So I’d say my favorite category- which is easier to pick out -is my French fashion dolls.

On the floor, left to right: Ophelie (F.G., c. 1880), Marinette (F.G. with a body by Gesland, c. 1875-80, holding a china doll named Lydia), and Jeanette (F.G., c. 1870-75. Photobombing in the tree on the right is Charlotte (Bru, c. 1870-75) before she had a head and clothes, and on the left is my first antique doll ever, China. Imaginative name there, 14-year-old Marzi. Not pictured, because she literally arrived yesterday: Leonore (head by Dehors, c. 1866-70).

These are basically my childhood platonic ideal of Doll, combining many crucial factors:

- Porcelain, at least in part

- Depict adult women, not children or babies

- Clothing is, by necessity, fancy as hell

- Old As Balls, to quote Hark, A Vagrant

- Unrealistically pale (applies to white dolls only, of course. I love extreme contrasts in doll coloring- when I was a kid, my sister had a copy of Belles on Their Toes that featured a doll on the cover with a paper-white complexion and black hair and eyes. I was smitten.)

(someday I want to do a faceup all in metallic gold on a Black doll, so this love of contrast manifests for different races of doll in different ways. but I digress)

- Sometimes they’re ARTICULATED, and that really blows my mind. I had one ballerina Barbie as a kid, and that was pretty much it as far as articulated lady dolls went. So the idea of one with all the above traits AND posability...utter Galaxy Brain there, 19th century dollmakers.

They’re a very rare and pricey sort of doll, because I can’t ever do anything the easy way. But I’ve been very lucky in terms of good deals, good timing, windfalls, and (to check my privilege) being born in a family where my grandmother could leave me some money when she died.

So they’ve made their way to me. Leonore will probably be the last for a while, because there aren’t really any other dolls in this category I want now that “clever-faced 1860s doll with literally white skin and cobalt eyes” is covered.

...unless I ever find a Black French fashion doll, which did exist but which are incredibly rare. Then all bets are off.

So I had some fun playing with this guy in the sun. This is the galaxy pour that was inspired by @thebrokenmaiden and, now that the resin has fully cured and gone more transparent, I'm quite happy with how he captures. I learned a few things from him, he's certainly not perfect, but I'm generally pleased. Here you can see some of the texturing that I prefer on my finished dolls. It makes them feel more real to me. This little one will get a faceup and magnet installed before he's listed as those were more choices that were determined after the pour. If you have an interest in becoming his forever home, make an offer. I do accept reasonable trades also, though retain the right to decline if it's not something I'm looking for. I'll be pouring another this coming week and will do so live.
