Gaius keeps his human wrapped up in his arms as he ushers her towards the Salamanders. He curses whatever gods there might be that thought to punish him by sending him and his human back to his world. She's not like him! She's weak, fragile, untouched, untainted by the cruelty and horrors of his world.

Keeping her safe and away from his fellow World Eaters was a challenge, let alone his own Primarch. If he weren't one of the more renown warriors, he knows she probably wouldn't have been left alone this long. Still for all the fondness he has for his brothers and his genefather, he knows she would never be able to sleep without fear for her safety for as long as she's around them. Oh he's not an idiot, those damn Nails would sooner or later turn them all into mad war beasts. He had thought of ways to flee, to ensure her safety away from his Legion. Then it seems that fate wanted to make it up to them, for whatever reason the World Eaters and the Salamanders would be meeting up briefly.

Gaius cares little for the details, only for the fact that Salamanders and their Primarch are known for their care towards civilians. He had laughed and joked about this weakness of theirs to his fellow brothers in the past. Yet now it is this so-called weakness that might ensure his human's survival. He can see how the Salamanders on duty grip their weapons tighter at the sight of him, it is only his human clinging onto him that keeps them from aiming at him. He doesn't blame them, he knows his own reputation.

He swallows his pride and pleads his case, asking, begging for them to let the two of them go with them. At least take his human! She's not safe with his own legion. He breathes a sigh of relief when one of the Salamanders tells them to follow him. Gaius knows that he can't go back after this, his Primarch and brothers would never forgive him, but if it ensures his human's safety... that's all he needs.

She was feverish... Gaius had done all he could do to warn about what was going to happen. The legions were all in chaos as he wasn't the only one to refute what was going to happen... and while father and the Emperor were listening... he still pulled away fearful of what was still going to happen.

She smiles up at him as he mutters some old lullaby as she clings to him for warmth yet she sweats profusely. Its not a hard secret to find out as he glances around at the quarters he was provided. He heard that for the most part it was World Eaters and Night Lords trying to get their bonded away from their primarchs, Perturabo was apparently indifferent for the most part.

He's heard that the Night Lord's primarch is reacting poorly to these humans. Actually... few primarchs are reacting well... Vulkan is helping... Sanguinius is also sheltering... Magnus is curious... Gaius watched the door open as a serf start to tend to his bonded as he tiredly talks to the Salamander that follows in finally getting his story told and listened to as it will be brought to the growing list of others. The Crusade is in an odd place right now... a strange pause as the sudden and wild warp fluctuations... dead brothers are back... new brothers appear... all with humans forcing the Emperor to call his sons and Astartes back to Terra.

i really need to catch up with my elden ring lore theorizing vids because man so like --

the people i follow seemed to settle pretty fast that the other part of the vow, what radahn is getting from it, is like. valhalla. eternal war. if even that, maybe he wants nothing and got mind controlled, end of.

and it just bugs me to hell and back like. what's the narrative satisfaction there. what is it saying. how does it play with the themes. there's so little to go on, and it leaves him feeling so disjointed. like of course there's no other answer, miquella just is the worst person ever and ~has manipulated him all along ooh~

and it just does not feel right. like the puzzle piece doesn't fit.

like miquella has Gone Wrong. no bones about it. but i just. things just make so much more sense if instead of someone Powerful and In Control, he's been scrambling for a long time from dead end to dead end, setback to setback. acting from pain, cornered in desperation as everything keeps getting worse, and oh if everyone just was more compassionate towards each other, if just they could --- like miquella feels like the kind of activists you see sometimes, who need to save the world and everyone in it but they can't and it breaks them.

and miquella has people genuinely following him. people choose to stay.

so. radahn. is there something if we assume that he's genuinely sworn to miquella.

first off, absolutely sick. why would the ostensibly likely most good hearted demigods out of the bunch do that? what would drive them to it? i lose my mind thinking about how nobody has healthy attachment here. i lose my mind thinking about how much it feels like miquella might have been isolated due to his condition.

point is. desperation. everything stinks of desperation to me.

what would radahn have wanted. and if he wanted something, why didn't he go miquella willingly.

i have been turning gaius around in my head for some time. cursed from birth, with an other half, a friend to messmer, an older brother to the lion. albinauric. one of the oppressed peoples miquella is trying to save.

is that enough? is his older brother figure so dear to radahn? did he change his mind, abandon a (sworn?) brother because he'd rather have war and whatever he was fighting for in the shattering? the man who learned gravitation magic so he wouldn't have to leave his beloved horse behind?

what would the story be. what else is there in the world.

does he just want to be a lord to be even more like godfrey?

miquella makes him look more like godfrey in their fight. he also looks kinda like serosh. serosh was there to hold back hoarah loux's bloodlust. the cutscene makes it look like radahn was about to freak out, but then miquella steps in and holds him (back?) but why would radahn want his bloodlust held back, when he's such a war guy? but what else is there?

... wait.

at the festival, radahn doesn't have feet.

he's not an albinauric. people suffering from scarlet rot lose limbs (though the asymmetry of malenia's legs feels pointed in contrast to the symmetry of albinauric fading...) but the rot makes you sickly pale colors, not the dark grey he's got going on (have i forgotten someone else that has gone his color from it?)

gaius was cursed from birth. an albinauric. the loss of legs starting from feet is so specific to albinaurics. what are albinaurics. why does the putrescent knight have albinauric-like legs. the putrescence oozing out of the coffin ships, the way shaman flesh easily melds bodies together, silver tears - wasn't there something about mimic tears and albinaurics, a theory(?) about them being related? what is going on with the albinaurics. is a curse something that is touched by outer gods? they are called by suffering, and suffering is how the dung eater is making curses.

marika's children are cursed (except, or maybe...?) radagon's children don't seem to be cursed. but gaius was cursed from birth. it's not limited to just marika's children, and radagon is marika anyway.

does any of this connect? resonate?

was radahn cursed?

had he lost his mind by the time he and malenia clashed?

is that why malenia had to remind him of his vow?

is he yet fucking another person, another SIBLING, who turned to miquella, seeking salvation?

did miquella vow to save him too?

i have fucking crumbs to go on and only second hand sources for them but that's only making me Lose My Mind more because i am in hell! hell!

NTN opinions

so I haven't read NTN very recently (or the other locked tomb books) but its the most recent installment about Nona I think about a lot.

Muir said that she was splitting Alecto the Ninth into two parts, NTN and then ATN. She explained that Nona already had a complete story arc and could be its own separate book. Obviously there's nothing wrong with that.

But to be quite honest, I feel like most of NTN could have been cut. The most important parts of Nona are these:

Her dreams of John Gaius

Now don't get me wrong, I loved seeing Nona going to school as a teachers aide and making friends! The problem is, the relationships she develops with the kids like Hot Sauce aren't...very important. I think it would have been better if Nona developed relationships with characters that she already knew, like Crown (Coronabeth) for example.

If Nona being friends with a group of kiddos is important, then maybe she should do it specifically with kids from the Blood of Eden. Out of all of Nona's friends, her relationship with Noodle the dog is the most important, and maybe Hot Sauce. She could be another niece of Wake, the same as Pash. It would explain why Hot Sauce is so suspicious of necromancers and why she shot up Nona in that one scene.

Also, If Nona is the secret weapon, why isn't she more involved with B.O.E? It's implied that the Blood of Eden is on the struggle bus. Wouldn't the inception have more depth if Nona was among their ranks right before their eyes, it'd be a major example of why they've failed for so long to stop Mr. Jod.

Cam and Palamedes could have gathered a few trust worthy relationships used to protect Nona too. Heck, the Blood of Eden could have a "school" of their own where they teach the kids of their soldiers propaganda, look at how Pash was raised!

I genuinely believe that all of the stuff that happened could have been condensed to a feasible first part. As an author, cutting things we're proud of writing is like shooting yourself in the head then doing it again. But I think if I was in Muir's shoes, I would've done it. I love Hot Sauce, Kevin and the other kiddos so much but they're just...not important enough for the over all plot :(

Lastly, and this is where I'm getting super nit picky, but I wish there was more world building. I 100% appreciate Muir's trust in the readers intelligence and for us to put the pieces together. I understood that Steles were used to travel far distances and "flip" planets to be colonized for necromancers. I VASTLY prefer this instead of five hundred pages of exposition (Fourth Wing) slammed into the beginning of the book.

That being said, a little bit of exposition is fine. Gideon The Ninth does this perfectly with explaining thanergy and other necromancer related info. We learn more in HTN as well. I think Muir was thinking that "Nona wouldn't know these things, so it can't be expressed in the book" which I totally get, but Nona has a canon excuse for just Having knowledge! Her uncanny reading of body language and understanding of different languages? Her ability to draw animals from Earth that were lost to public knowledge? Nona just casually absorbing information and thinking about it in her internal monologue is completely reasonable. I say this to point out that Muir was too vague with the world building in NTN. Yes, I could fill in the gaps but I would have loved more information about the colony planets outside of the House system! She's doing too much showing, which I think is precisely why NTN got much too long.

Anyway, PLEASE take all of this with a grain of salt. I love Nona the Ninth and I think the way it was written is digestible and good! It's just not how I would have done it. Please Tamsyn I'm begging you for lore I am BEGGING YOU FOR LORE.

Voidsent are not Heartless. The Source and its reflections exist within the Realm of Light except for the Thirteenth, which has fallen extremely close to the Realm of Darkness

Heartless invasion pre-KH1 coincides with the Seventh Umbral Calamity. The stars star disappear from the sky as Dalamud falls and even the Ascians are concerned about that

Either Luxu or the Master of Masters told the Ancients how to create a will for the star (also depending on if i get further info about how Zodiark was created. im only in shb)

Luxu definitely infiltrated the Ascians at some point and critiqued their black robe style

recompleted Lauriam and Elrena end up on the Source for some reason. They still use their Nobody names as aliases and become wanted criminals in Sharlayan. And also meet the Lemures. Later a Zenos vs Lauriam reaper fight

the Scions need to ally with the RG apprentices for Some Reason and get their help deciphering Allagan artifacts. The group goes to some Azys Lla-type place but get ambushed by imperial soldiers. Even gives some speech about how dull he finds this world and how using this great technology for war is so boring. The Scions start to question their choice of ally

Hildibrand adventures with Donald and Goofy. Goofy is the Smart One. Donald oneshots Bahamut with Zettaflare. Sideplot where Gilgamesh tries to take a Keyblade but it won't stay summoned in his hand

Additional plot with Donald and Goofy where they mentioned that they still can't find Sora and are considering talking to Hades. Cue Scions' extreme confusion and subsequent miscommunication about which Hades they're talking about

Y'shtola casts flow again and this time the Fairy Godmother pops over to the Final World to bring her back. She insists that the Scions repeat "bippity boppity boo" with her for it to work

A Scalan keyblade wielder complains about how pretentious and inaccurate the name "the Source" is for a minor world. "Scala ad Caelum should rightfully be called the Source because it is the nexus from which all worlds spring." Emet-Selch has to go sit down to process this for a moment

Sea salt trio in Amaurot: "oh this kind of looks like The World that Never Was." Scions: "The World that what." "The World that Never Was. Home to the Castle that Never Was and Nobodies that don't exist—" "Okay now you are just making that up." "We did say they don't exist." "Please stop."

Minfilia inherited the Princess of Heart powers during KH3 (ARR time) and passed them onto the Oracles of Light and eventually Ryne

BIOGRAPHY

cassius is ruthless and ambitious, a classic manipulator born into death eater royalty. however, despite his grandfather augustus' place in the inner circle, the rookwoods were not previously sacred 28, nor rich; augustus had to work for a living as a ministry official, an unspeakable. this fact still hangs over the family now, with some of their fellow purebloods taking care to remind them that despite voldemort's favour, they are not truly of the elite , something of a sore spot for cassius.

the right hand man of his grandfather, his father passed over thanks to cassius manipulating the situation so he instead is in favour - a previous history of sabotaging his father's missions, quietly orchestrating failures when vespasian is in charge so that cassius can step in to correct them. it's typical of him, he puts on a charming face, and manipulates those around him, but he has very little feeling for anyone at all, acting entirely for his own benefit. he's never cared much for his parents, who are content to go along with their place in voldemort's world, with little ambition for more. his father, vespasian, is satisfied with being a death eater among many, useful, but unimportant. cassius, on the other hand, wants nothing less than to be a god.

he is, therefore, not particularly loyal to the cause, although very good at feigning it. in truth, he cares nothing for voldemort, but instead wants the power the dark lord holds for himself. to this end, cassius attempts to gain the loyalty of his fellow death eaters, particularly the younger ones, in the hope that one day he can find a way to weaken voldemort, and take over as the dark lord himself. fortunately for him, he's very talented at occlumency; thus far, this ambition is known to no-one but himself - though some might suspect.

the death of his grandfather at the battle will change little for him - he feels some fondness for the old man, he's been useful in establishing their family with a close connection to voldemort, if nothing else, but now that cassius will be called upon to fill augustus' place, closer to the dark lord, as the head of the rookwood family (passing over his father once more), he supposes the death of his grandfather is actually quite useful to him. and cassius rookwood never fails to seize an advantage when he's handed one.

Gaius nervously hovers behind his human as she browses the market stalls. He can't help it, not when there's another World Eater before him. Is this a loyalist like him or a traitor?

Both of them are in armor, he knows his repainted armor... how he bears the old colour and sigil of the War Hounds is unexpected. This World Eater stares at him, eyes hidden behind lens. He's also with his own human it seems, given how he's sticking close to a teenage boy. Gaius takes a step closer to his own human and gently directs her away in the opposite direction.

As much as he misses the brotherhood and camaraderie he once had in his legion, he doesn't know if he can trust any of his brothers anymore. When he looks back, that other World Eater is still there, looking at him. Is there longing in that helmeted gaze? Or scorn and disgust?

Gaius wrestles down his own yearning, burying his desire for his brothers. He has to. His human is more than his brothers, more than his pitiful excuse of a Primarch, that tortured mess of a father. His human calls his name then, wanting his opinion for a new set of cushion covers.

He's always been obedient and now it's no different. She may not be his superior in anyway but this bond... is it not the Space Marine that should bend to their bonded human's whims and wishes? He hums softly as he looks at the two designs she's holding up, picking the one that has little rabbits on it. He likes rabbits and his human likes cute critters. This will do.

The Scions of the Seventh Dawn Aren't Cops

I saw a post that expressed uh, let's say confusion, about the Final Fantasy XIV community and the in-game NPCs, and how they handle the current storyline villain, Golbez. I think the idea was that if the villain has good vibes (looking at you, Emet-Selch), they get a break, no matter how many millions of people they murdered.

I don't think it's about vibes, although there's plenty of people who get hot for some of the villains.

I think it's that the main characters - the Scions, and the WoL - aren't cops, and this comes as a surprise to a primarily American audience that's used to cop protagonists.

What do I mean by that? Let's run through the villains from ARR to the present.

The Ascians. Effectively dealt with, with most of their top level leadership killed off for real by the Warrior of Light. These were the guys creating calamities to try and combine worlds with the Source, bring back the Unsundered World, and in the process execute global genocide. But their circumstances engendered a lot of sympathy, both from players & characters.

The Garleans (including Doman collaborators). Several - Nero and Gaius from ARR, Jullus from Endwalker, etc. - are now effectively allies of the WoL and friends. Others got killed during the Grand Companies' military actions e.g. Operation Archon, or under unique circumstances, e.g. Zenos.

The Syndicate - although members of the Ul'dah Syndicate have tried to kill the Scions, and/or have hurt their allies (Nanamo, Raubahn...), they've basically been left alone by the Scions.

Thordan and the Heavens' Ward - attempted to ascend to godhood, killed friends (I miss Haurchefant), and got killed. But there's plenty of sympathizers and hardliners still active in Ishgard.

Nidhogg's Brood - Nidhogg got killed, hostile dragons get killed when encountered, but otherwise the Dragonsong War wound down through acts of peace.

Vauthry and Sin Eaters - Big V got killed when he tried to Angel Up, and the Ascians behind it all got theirs.

Golbez and the Voidsent - if you know you know.

So what do these people have in common?

If you aren't actively trying to blow up the world at the moment, the Scions will not come for you. If you are, they will try to stop you doing what you're doing, even if that means killing you.

But. The Scions are not here to chase you down for your crimes. They do not maintain a prison. They do not tend to hold grudges, but they're wary around dangerous, risky people. They're not focused on policing people. They're focused on responding to active threats to life. If a threat ends, they leave it to other people to deal with whoever was enacting that threat. That might be a city-state and its leadership, a military alliance, or whatever. But if you stop doing the thing the Scions are here to stop, they'll move on. If you reverse course and try to do the right thing, they may even team up with you.
