#repost • @gadfoundation Xiangjiang FFC Marketing Display Center is a 2,000-square-meter, mixed use cultural and recreation center located in Changsha, China. Standing at 16 meters, the building is comprised of three stories with two undulating, opposing terraces that provide shade for people standing under the awnings. Inspired by its location, the project’s façade system mimics the nearby Xiangjiang River’s movements with its sinuous shapes. Accessible via three separate entryways, visitors and employees will find appropriate amenities readily available for education, recreation, and productivity. South African designer Porky Hefer took cues from the amorphous shape of bird nests to create this off-grid guesthouse on a wildlife reserve in Namibia. The Nest at Sossus guesthouse is situated on the Namib Tsaris Conservancy, a 24,000-hectare reserve nestled between the Nubib and Zaris Mountains in Namibia's Namib desert. . It's been designed by Porky Hefer to emulate the habitat of sociable weavers – a species of bird found in southern Africa known for building huge, bulging nests that are able to accommodate hundreds of birds at a time. Hot summers are balanced by breezy and rainy winters with consistent sunlight throughout the year. The architecture of residential buildings in the region has to adapt to these climactic advantages with solutions designed to maximise the lifestyle potential of the area. In GAD’s project for AHK Kundu a number of formal and material design solutions were employed to build a series of sustainable and life-enhancing villas inside a multi-residential development project for a local property developer. Located in Antalya, Turkey AHK Kundu consists of four large, twenty two medium, and twelve small residential units set inside a site adjacent to a waterway that leads to the nearby Mediterranean Sea. The design of the project features sustainable design and build principles driven by environmental factors with the aim of construction using only locally available materials for low waste and low pollution. Why Archipedia?

The single most important thing is a lack of evidence in discussions among architecture professionals. The connections in architectural history are not very well defined, making explanations of the current situation difficult and incomplete. Critics tend to examine the situation isolated from historical evidence, without archiving the past properly.

In order to avoid misconceptions, as well as to develop a new consciousness towards a non-linear history of architecture, the GAD Foundation has decided to prepare the Archipedia – an open source library. In this digital age, where globalization of architecture is becoming important while still maintaining a local identity, the necessity of an archival study increases in order to indicate that uniqueness and singularity in built architecture is merely a deceit.

It can be said that no new “-isms” will develop, yet this doesn’t mean that every architectural product is unique on its own. A need to establish connections between single architects and define a non-linear history for architects exists to show where architects stand in society and how they are perceived in relation to “others”. In fact, this self-consciousness is very important for the evolution of architectural society, allowing it to examine its own limits. The Archipedia developed by GAD therefore questions the necessity of unwanted cacophonic sounds and makes the discussions more precise and worthy.

When the owners of the Vikasa Yoga Retreat ⁣ decided to open another location in the heart of Bangkok, they realized they couldn’t simply transport the retreat’s rustic aesthetic to the heart of the metropolis - the original location sits on a hillside on the Thai island of Ko Samui overlooking the sea. The new facility would have to be both meditative and modern, but its peaceful interior also a reflection of the vivid pulse of the city outside. The owners turned to Enter Projects Asia (enter projects) to design Vikasa on 24 ( vikasabangkok), the new urban yoga space in a 5,000-square-foot space on the second floor of a concrete, steel, and glass building.
