It was well after midnight when the party wrapped up and the guests started to leave the lot.
That meant Year 2 was over for the residents of Brindleton Farm and it was time to move on to Simoleon Camp on the island across the water.

Marco Santos has always carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. A renowned chef on a one way track to success, his career came to a screeching halt when Marco took the blame for a crime he didn't commit to protect his brother and ensure that Juan could be present in his newborn daughter's life. Marco served jail time for five years, but was released on good behavior. He's been back home for six months now and facing the possibility that his sacrifice might have been for nothing, but could cost him everything.
Marco’s mother died when he was pretty young. From that moment, his little brother, who was just two, pretty much became Marco’s responsibility. Their dad really struggled with providing for his sons on a single income, but when Marco was about 10 years old, he got a job that would finally allow him to make sure they were all comfortable, but would require him to travel a lot. So he sent Marco & Juan to go live with their grandparents in Briar Ridge. Shortly after moving to Briar Ridge, Marco met and befriended the girl next door. They became best friends and remained so for the rest of their childhood.
Marco worked really hard to be the best that he could be at… everything. He studied hard, practiced any and every sport he played as much as he could, even worked as hard as he could at being the best big brother. He wanted to make sure that by the time he graduated from high school, he would have several options to ensure he started making enough money to help his family out. But his brother didn’t have the same goals as Marco and after falling in with the wrong crowd when they were kids, continued on a downward spiral that kept getting him into bad shit
After graduating from high school, Marco managed to get a scholarship to a world famous culinary school in Orlando, Florida. His time in Orlando made him realize that cooking, and simply being in a restaurant environment, were his passion. The eldest Santos thrived while he was there. When he left, he asked the girl next door to keep an eye on Juan, and with the physical distance from constantly looking over his shoulder for his brother, he was finally able to focus and really thrived. When Marco graduated, he got a job working at a restaurant in Orlando. He planned on staying in the city, at least for a couple years and working his way up the ‘ladder’ so to speak. But after receiving a frantic call from his grandmother about how out of control Juan had gotten, Marco packed up his bags and moved back home, feeling like his brother had been and always would be his responsibility
Over the years, Marco has worked at different restaurants in Briar Ridge, until about 8 years ago, he finally got his big break and landed a job at Alvaro’s at Paradise Point Resort & Spa. Despite how bad things were with Juan, Marco’s professional life, at least, seemed to be doing pretty well. Then, things got turned upside down six years ago when Juan got one of his flings pregnant. From the moment his niece was born, Marco fell head over heels. Gabriela, named after Marco in a manipulative attempt to show how much Juan appreciated his older brother, became the single most important thing to him and for that first year she was alive, Marco took care of her just as much as Juan did.
Five years ago, things came crashing down when Marco caught his brother breaking into someone’s house in a wealthier part of town. With Juan already having several priors on his record, Marco went in after him to try to get him to leave, afraid of the repercussions his brother would face if he were caught. A silent alarm was triggered & before they knew it, the cops arrived. Not wanting his brother to miss out on all the time with his daughter, who was just a year old, Marco took the blame so his brother could escape & was arrested in his place. Because it was his first offense, Marco only received 7 years with a chance of getting out on good behavior. He got out after 5 and is now on the path to getting his life back, including trying to adopt his niece who he’s learned his brother basically abandoned after he went to jail.

Women fighters, in fiction and in reality, have always fascinated me.
I grew up never getting tired of The Mummy Returns (2001) and its action-packed adventures. It features one of my most favorite cinematic moments: the fight scene between Nefertiri and Anck-su-namun, both tasked to be protectors in the kingdom of Egypt some 3,000 years ago. One may think they must be ahead of their time for training women for battle and assigning such tasks to them.
Fight scene from The Mummy Returns (2001)
There are many other scenes in the said film showing both women as their 1930s reincarnation, Evy (Nefertiri) and Meela (Anck-su-namun), fighting with and among men. Not once did Rick, Evy's husband, handed over guns to her to help them battle the enemies and save their son. Their kind of relationship was yet another reason why I have always loved that film.
Seeing The Mummy Returns again for the nth time, I figured these female characters have played a significant part in my upbringing. They showed me women can fight, too, when it was most needed. They didn't have to be the stereotypical damsels in distress waiting to be rescued because they can save themselves while saving others, as well. In retrospect, at such a young age I knew I wanted to be like them. I wasn't very much into the princess thingy, except for the Xena the Warrior Princess kind. In fact, I once dreamed of becoming like the Power Rangers with all their skills and stunts.
Through the years, I have been learning more about Filipinas who left their mark in our history. In an era of a patriarchal society where women were reinforced to be homemakers & deemed as the lesser sex, there were several of them who strayed against the conventions and took part in the never-ending fight for freedom.
Illustrations of Gabriela Silang (by Carlito Rovira) (top) and the first female general Agueda Kahabagan (from SCOUT Magazine) (bottom) during the Philippine Revolution
One of them was notorious for polishing her nails and putting on red lipstick before going to battle, because she believed she also fought for the freedom to be herself as a woman. Another one used to be a movie superstar until the war. She joined the guerrilla movement to avenge for her husband's murder, and in the process she saved an entire village from being killed by the colonizers.
The women of HUKBALAHAP (Hukbong Bayan Laban sa Hapon), clockwise from left:

But the courage of Filipina women in history has been witnessed not only at home and in the battlefield. There were women who stood up for their right to receive formal education and their right to vote.
Top photo: a painting of The Women of Malolos (art by Rafael del Casal); bottom photo: U.S. First Lady Florence Harding w/ Filipina suffragette delegation, 1922 (From US-Philippines Society)
There were women who saved people's lives by caring for the injured and the sick and feeding the hungry.
Clockwise from left: Melchora Aquino AKA Tandang Sora (from Wikipedia); Josefa Llanes-Escoda (from Bayaning Filipino on Blogger); Maria Orosa (from Orosa Family); and Dr. Fe del Mundo (from National Academy of Science and Technology)
There were women who continue to fight for justice and for their right to be heard, not just as victims but survivors of a violent, tragic past.
Top photo: the Malaya Lolas of Candaba, Pampanga; bottom photo: the lolas of Lila Pilipina. Both are groups of “comfort women,” survivors of military sexual violence during the Japanese Occupation. (From Facebook)
There were women who prove themselves worthy to be recognized by the world for their talents, abilities, and dedication in their respective fields.
Hidilyn Diaz, the first Filipino Olympic gold medalist; and Maria Ressa, the first Filipino Nobel Laureate (From Esquire Philippines)
There were women leaders who empowered their countrymen towards a better quality of life.
Campaign images of Senator Risa Hontiveros and former Senator Leila de Lima for the 2022 National Elections (From Facebook)
Atty. Leni Robredo, former Vice President of the Philippines (From Esquire Philippines)
And before I forget, I was raised and surrounded by strong women who all the while face their own share of battles in life.
We as women are fighters, and we should never let anyone tell us otherwise.
Meanwhile, I believe I have arrived at a full circle. I may haven't reached my dream of becoming a Power Ranger but who would have thought that as an adult, I would portray a woman fighter myself?
Happy Women's Month!

Gabi was playing Don't Wake the Llama all by herself — Floyd and Niki abandoned her! — when she noticed somebody walk up the front porch steps and stop awkwardly by the front door.
"Hi!" she said when he didn't immediately speak to her. "Are you here to see someone?"
"Oh, hi... uh no I just... uh..." David rubbed his neck awkwardly. "I wanted to see how things were going... besides all of the partying to unlock townies, you know? Are you getting close to unlocking anything else?"
"Oh! Well, I'm trying to unlock the freelance Fashion Photographer job, and I'm probably gonna try to max out my charisma to unlock the Entertainer career... but we do need townies first before we can get jobs... so partying is kind of... necessary."
"Right," David nodded. Gabi saw a muscle twitch in his jaw, but before she could ask if he was okay he was grinning again. "Well... Simoleon Camp also has a 1,910 simoleons left to pay off of their debt. My household donated some funds to them to help. I don't know if that's something that'd interest you guys too?"
"Can we do that?" Gabi asked.
"Yeah! Alana gave us the go-ahead!" David told her.
"Well, in that case, I'll definitely talk to the boys about it. We're doing pretty well, so I'm sure we could help them out!"
"Good, good," David clapped his hands. "I know I'm probably annoying a lot of Sims... and not everyone agrees with me... but I just really want to see progress before the end of Year 2, you know? I feel like we should be doing better than we are."
"You're not annoying! I totally see your point! But you do know the Watcher prefers to write stories, right? Not grind skills? So... the slow pace might be here to stay."
