Man, it's cool and all if you see a metaphor for marginalisation in the monstrous, and if you want the power fantasy of 'what if you could just eat anybody who threatened you/pissed you off'. Me too.
However, as soon as you start saying 'no, these monsters are a 1:1 on Specific Marginalised Group, and you have to treat them in the fiction like they are directly representative of real human members of the marginalised group', BUT you also, in the fiction, make them hurt/kill/eat humans? And then try to shame me, your audience, for noticing or engaging with the bit where they kill people, because you made them directly representative of a real-world marginalised group? You have lost me, and also, I think, the plot.
#hear yourself. for the love of whatever you cherish.#'but they only kill bigots so ACTUALLY they're the GOOD GUYS -' your metaphor of monstrosity is entirely premised on the question of#'what if what you went around righteously killing; believing your actions to be justified;#were actually people and it was not in fact righteous or justified to just kill them'#'what if the world isn't neatly split into 'good guys' and 'bad guys'#who gets to decide who or what is 'bad'? because that's the original problem of monstrosity-as-metaphor-for-marginalisation#(if as a creator you say 'oh my intention with this was X' cool!#if instead you go with something like. well.#'well in this setting monsters are so rare it doesn't matter that they kill people and you'd have to be a homicidal sadistic psychopath >#< to hunt them; but sure I guess if you want to play a Bad Person' well I might have#but if you're going to explicitly judge me for wanting to engage with the moral question of 'how justified is this and who would do it#versus how justified are these monsters if they do have to harm or kill people to continue to exist'#then maybe I just don't want to play your game at all)#anyway I'm sick to death of poor uwu cozy vampires who are SO marginalised so I'm not Allowed to care about all the people they murder#it being fucked up is what's fun about it! do all the other shit but let me take the murders seriously!#and inb4 someone accuses me of being a bigot for saying 'actually I don't think you get a free pass to kill and eat people if you're gay'#remember when the CW's famously reactionary and conservative Supernatural tried to just gloss over the part where every time its heroes >#< killed a demon with a magic knife it also killed the person the demon was possessing#and say 'oh no it's fine we don't care about those killings; they don't matter; don't bother caring about them either'#but they were doing it to glorify exactly the kind of people that these 'monster as metaphor' stories are trying to cast as expendable?#I have other examples that are like. real dramas. but That Paranormal Show is the one that's in the same niche that I'm talking about here#it feels more insidious when it comes through a fantasy show where there are monsters involved#so you can say 'no it's not real so it doesn't matter'#but then ALL of it is equally not real. and vampires are not actually an oppressed group. because they don't exist.#you can say 'these vampires are a metaphor for an oppressed group so this fiction matters in real life'#or you can say 'don't care about the murders because they weren't actually real'#but you can't say both and then get mad at ME for treating the murders as seriously as the vampires#let me engage with your premise and don't waste my fucking time#or just set your fluff in the Sesame Street universe where vampires drink cherry Kool-Aid and help kids learn to count

so like... the Qun being reveled to be pro-trans in DAI makes zero sense... considering both sten & the arishok are shown to believe strongly in gender roles... and that sten even goes as far as to say that a person can never be anything other than what they're born and that a fisherman who tries to become a merchant will never be a real merchant and will only ever be a fisherman pretending to be a merchant... like... ?????
I mean i get wanting iron bull to be pro-trans himself but wouldn't it make way more sense for that to be something he actually dislikes about the Qun... and then it would actually create tension in his storyline between his own viewpoints & agency and the messages he's learned from the qun and partially actually believes and has partially been forced to believe through literal indoctrination and abuse... and therefore whether he becomes tal-vashoth or not could actually be something that matters instead of just a meaningless pseudo-choice...

Summer, Cloud Recesses
552 words. also on ao3.
The grass was damp. Bright birdsong filtered down through the undulating canopy. Wen Qing was lying on the damp grass, listening to the bright birdsong, and trying, as she often was, to convince herself that this was really the last time. She was putting a stop to it. It never should have started in the first place.
It was just—nothing she ever did was for herself. She didn't have the luxury of personal desires, when it took every ounce of her focus and her cunning and her determination just to save her family from torture, or worse. Maybe if she had grown up differently, with the time and the right to care about frivolous things, maybe it wouldn't have been so overpowering when she saw him, fierce and open and beautiful, and she wanted.
He was the only thing she'd taken for herself, done for herself, in as long as she could remember. What she was doing here, with him, would not further her mission—either the one assigned to her by her uncle or the one by which he ensured her compliance; if anything, it could jeopardize at the very least the safety of her brother here in Gusu, if not the entire Dafan Wen branch. It didn't make sense. To take such a risk, and for what? It had no utility. It wouldn't protect anyone. It wasn't like her at all.
And yet. When Wen Ruohan finally did whatever it was he was going to do with the reconstructed yin iron, Jiang Cheng would know she hadn't come here to be a student. He'd know her ulterior motives. And of course it didn't matter! What an idiotic thing to waste time and brainpower on, with the stakes being what they were. Quite probably Wen Ruohan's plans would spell disaster for the Yunmeng Jiang. She knew this, and she would still deliver him the shard, because she knew what mattered to her. She shouldn't care about how finding out she was a liar would color Jiang Cheng's memories of their little...whatever this was.
But she couldn't help it: She was angry. She knew that when he found out, he'd think that this, what they were doing, had been part of it. That it was all a ruse—just a distraction, maybe, so he wouldn't find her out. He'd think, oh, I must have interrupted her in the middle of something suspicious, and she'd slammed me against that rock and kissed me so ferociously I couldn't think of anything else, just so I wouldn't suspect her. She was a spy. I was an enemy.
He'd think she did it for someone else, something else, some purpose other than her own glorious selfishness. And that was intolerable to her.
He didn't understand her at all, and once he knew more about her he would only misunderstand her in a different way.
It was infuriating, she thought, and observed her fury helplessly as they lay on their backs side by side in the timeless haze of the after.
An age later, he turned to her. "Penny for your thoughts?" he said, and he looked so hopeful, for no reason, the stupid boy, all big brown eyes, mussed hair, nose dusted with freckles—
"Shut up," she said, and rolled over, and devoured him.

It has always bothered me, but after watching Arcane I keep thinking more and more about how much the framing of the narrative in Fire Emblem Fates bothers me.
Because the thing is we have very similar situations: Hoshido and Piltover as the privileged parts of these societies, with Nohr and Zaun struggling to get by. But where this unbalance is very clear in Arcane, it's framed SO differently in Fates.
Nohr is in the wrong for doing whatever they can to survive, despite the fact (iirc) they did ask Hoshido for help because they get no damn sunlight in Nohr because of the light and dark dragons or whatever and there's only so much cattle and crops you can get like that. People are dying everyday over there and Hoshido doesn't give a damn, but Nohr is in the wrong for being desperate enough to try and get territory on their side of the continent because they need to feed themselves.
It's insane. The retainers of the royal siblings in Hoshido are all children of nobles. The retainers of the royal siblings in Nohr are all like "oh, this was an assassin trying to kill me to get money to survive so I ended up taking her in", "this boy was trying to rob us to be able to eat and he was going to get executed so I took him under my wing", "I saved her from a gladiator wing and took her under my care", like ???. The difference in conditions is just insane.
Even the royal siblings aren't escaping this because despite being the ones who get the best standing, they had to murder a whole lot of their half siblings because of the sheer amount of women who became Garon's concubines in order to try and ensure themselves and their children a better life. And then they had to kill each other in order to have a chance. THEY WERE CHILDREN. THEY HAD TO KILL THEIR HALF SIBLINGS AS CHILDREN.
Meanwhile in Hoshido the biggest problems the siblings had was that they were insecure or shy or whatever.
And you're expected to go "you're right, Nohr is evil, Hoshido is good". Like... I don't even know, man. What were the writers on, it's insane. And the amount of stuff about Nohr that got censored in localization because it was too heavy due to how dark it got is also like... jesus fucking christ, these people were living in misery and you want to blame them for trying to get themselves a better life since Hoshido won't help? Be for real...
Fates, you would be so good if you were good 😞
