friggin faux-Palestinian history, istg

I'm in the middle of writing a post about the difficulties of pinning down details and dates in Palestinian history. This one is just me stopping to vent for a sec.

I came across the Wikipedia page for GUPS, the General Union of Palestinian Students. This is an organization with groups at colleges all over the world. Ish. It's shrunk over the decades.

The page made a bold claim: that GUPS was officially founded in Cairo in 1959, but had really started in the 1920s.

I called bullshit. The only source cited was a dead link to the 2010 version of the SFSU GUPS page, which said the same thing -- no context, no source, and especially, no explanation of how Palestinian student organizing could have started before there were colleges or universities in Palestine.

There were two. They were tiny. And they both taught in Hebrew.

Certainly, there could have been Arab Palestinian students there, who learned Hebrew there, or already knew it.

But were there so many that they started a student group that apparently lasted 35+ years before getting a name??

I could not find one other source for this.

So I deleted it and called bullshit.

Within a day, someone who wasn't even logged in reverted my edit. They told me that I hadn't proven that it was wrong, I'd just said it was illogical.

I started looking up sources and putting together a more detailed edit. In the meantime, I started a topic on the totally empty talk page, politely calling bullshit.

I said that I hadn't been able to find any sources in English OR Arabic that confirmed this claim, and that I thought it was an error made on a dead page.

The same person, now logged in, replied:

"you still haven't refuted the claim. the claim is still on their web page."

This is exactly how it feels to research any of this stuff.

I ended up getting Google to give me the Arabic for GUPS, and then digging for sources about its actual origin.

It turns out Yasser Arafat formed the Palestinian Students League in Cairo in 1949, and that became GUPS in 1956. This is entirely fucking unsurprising in any way if you know anything at all about actual Palestinian history. Of fucking course he did. This also explains why the first search result I found about GUPS was from the PLO. Of fucking course it was.

i'm assuming you're referring to my post on the 'vote blue no matter what' gang — i wrote that in a complete (and justified) fit of anger. i should start by saying i am not american, or palestinian — i am an arab who grew up in an arab country, though, and all of us have long since grown sickened and enraged with american imperialism.

The minute they figured out how to make a decent third-person DR action game with Ultra Despair Girls, that should've opened the floodgates wide IMO. Hey, remember that official DR3 Staff Book art that showed Nanami dreaming about it? Many of us have shared fan ideas for the story and/or for character moves. COME ON, y'all. What's the holdup?? DO IT! DO IT NOW!

Danganronpa: Dancing? FUCK YAS. I mean, there's already some wicked dance remixes of the game soundtracks in that Crypt of the Necrodancer DR content, so why the hell not?? And I recall that @dreamrlu did some great fanart (1) for how the (2) V3 crew could dress (3).

Danganronpa Q, a dungeon crawler? Despair Dungeon already exists, so it's COMPLETELY NATURAL. It's just a higher-quality production of that same concept! And if you haven't seen that fanmade version of the first "Persona Q" opening where it's the casts of DR1 and DR2 meeting up? It's AMAZING.

Danganronpa Tactica? Imagine leading squads from the Future Foundation (including DR1 and DR3 cast members) in missions against remaining Remnants of Despair. I've been playing a lot of tactical RPGs lately, and there's a lot of room to tell a ton of story in this format... plus it's not like you even have to make complex graphics to make it work, so SC doesn't have to worry about struggling with 3D renders if they don't want to. Just consider how Digimon Survive pulled this off with 2D sprite art!

Danganronpa Strikers is, uh, maybe the hardest to justify — but if you set it in the virtual world, that could make it easy! Since Danganronpa S already took place entirely in VR and contained a load of combat encounters, why the hell not do a similar setup for an action game? And if you prefer to keep in the real world, there are still a number of characters I could easily justify making playable in such a scenario — Genocide(r), Sakura, Asahina, Mondo, Nekomaru, Peko, Akane, Great Gozu, Seiko, Munakata, Maki, Gonta, etc. I can even picture some more-unlikely candidates such as Kimura slotting into the roster. I don't even like musou games that much, but ofc I'd play the SHIT out of this one.

Look: I know I'm an insatiable fan who just wants more precious content with these characters. But you can't convince me that these things wouldn't also SELL. The brand reached new heights of awareness and sales with V3, and they haven't really capitalized on that at all aside from giving us "Danganronpa S." We haven't even gotten a new anime since DR3, FFS! And I'm confident that any one of the ideas listed above would sell far better than a weird digital board game with RPG combat set inside VR, frankly. :P

HOT TAKE : I dont understand why Chrollo is so damn popular. He is so boring to me. So yes, they have a fucked up childhood, yes he cares about his members, and yes he has identity crisis or something but still, he is so freaking boring. Sorry it took me so long to answer your ask but you came to the right blog with these questions, you’ll find my understanding and support.

I also don’t get Chrollo’s popularity at all. Especially prior to the recent chapters.

I agree with you that he’s boring. His whole persona feels very fake, very rehearsed, like he practised edginess in front of the mirror. His words to Kurapika that other Spiders won’t try to save him felt to me so fake, especially how everything in that conversation was him trying to yank Kurapika’s chain (sorry for a bad pun XD). 

Even his mourning of Uvo feels like a performance. Like sure, I’m not denying he’s sad at that moment but he’s still very much in control of himself and performs the requiem. Even gets himself a captive audience to take a little edge off how shallow and silly his behaviour is. We see him truly affected after Hisoka kills Shalnark and Korotopi. After Chrollo fails to kill Hisoka despite pulling every dirty trick he could and his friends lose their lives as a direct result because he left them powerless. Before that we don’t even see him grieve Pakunoda. 

It all makes sense of course. Chrollo is a theatre kid as we learned recently. He really just took that theatre shit and made it his personality.

And that's boring because he’s a bad actor. He can trick a sheltered teenager, he can provoke an already unstable victim of his crimes. His little cult worships him. But people who look at him from the outside and have life experience like Zeno instantly see through him. 

Even Killua comments on how Chrollo just produces words with his mouth and they mean nothing. It’s such an amazing fourth wall break because it’s Togashi literally pointing at Chrollo and telling the audience this man is full of nothing but hot air. The way Chrollo speaks often feels like he read some deep sounding line in a book and he’s repeating it to wow the audience.

It is all very cult leader charm, you need to be primed for it to affect you properly. For me it’s boring and grating at times. Especially when we see him contrasted with almost all the other characters in the York New arc. We see the vivid connections the spiders have among them, how their levels of connection differ, how they have different attitudes to one another. It’s full of life and personality. And Chrollo there above them, always remaining above the fray, always performing his persona… he’s just such a nothing burger compared to that. 

Because there’s no pizzazz in his performance, no sprezzatura. It’s just fakedeep edgy boi acting like a throwaway cult leader while performatively denying he’s one… 

Chrollo’s kinda cutesy backstory doesn’t really make me care more about him. It just kind of highlights how fake he feels as an adult.

Why do fans like him? My uncharitable and biased guess is that they consider him hot and they like the edgy bad boi performance and just pour their desires of what they want Chrollo to be into that that vacuous husk.

As to Kurapika. Yeah, Kurapika is a bad friend and I have written it down here, I don’t have much to add to it.

Apart from that Togashi muddying the waters on the Kurta genocide makes things worse. It makes his whole narrative treatment of the genocide topic even worse than it’s been so far.

It may turn out that the Kurta did something horrible. And then the Phantom Troupe fans will use that as an excuse to whitewash the Spiders, even if one horrible act by a member or members of a group will never justify a genocide because nothing ever will. 

Even if it turns out that the Kurta did nothing to horrible, the seed of doubt is already there and the door to speculation whether their genocide was justified has been opened. 

And it also allows Phantom Troupe fans to skirt all the other murder that their favs have committed.

Trump was the first person to become a US's president without any political or military history, people thought it was just a joke when the funny old man from Celebrity Apprentice ran for office yet he won and there's a chance he will win again, so I don't see why holding any local government should be obligatory for 3rd party before jumping straight into the presidential ballot.

I already said everything I wanted to say about voting for 3rd party here X, frankly I have no interests on putting Stein on a pedestal or convincing others that she's a morally good person, all I care about is that she does the bare minimum of "doesn't unconditionally support a genocide against my people" and is the only 3rd party candidate who has any chance of winning, so that's more than enough for me.

People act like the oppression of magic users in that badly written show is somehow comparable to real-life oppression, which is actually insane. How could someone even think like that? Be serious.

And not to make it about me, but as someone who is actually real, is a religious minority, has been through real-life oppression because of it, lost people I personally know because of terrorism, and grew up hearing stories about the dictators that terrorized my people and what my parents went through living through a war, and what I go through on a daily basis—I think it’s very dehumanizing to get compared to a fictional religious minority from a badly written show. That’s actually dangerous and has harmed almost all of the characters with their "beliefs."

Do you think I or any other real-life minority hurt people with our beliefs? Are real-life minorities genuinely dangerous, or are we just hated because we exist? The magic ban, if it’s anything close to real life, would be like gun control or something, but in this case, people are born with guns attached to them I guess.

That being said, Arthur (or any character) hating magic when almost all of his encounters with it have been harmful to him ever since he was a kid is totally understandable. You’d be crazy to think it isn’t. It’s like expecting gun violence victims to not hate guns.

What’s even funnier is that some people think those who harmed him were some type of revolutionaries when almost every single magic user who appeared did it out of personal gain. Maybe blame the writers for making it hard to sympathize with these characters when every one of them literally proves Uther right. Like, okay, Edwin was right, Freya was just a poor girl (who was harmed by magic herself), Mordred was just a kid, and Kara was one of the only characters who were genuinely a revolutionary and wanted to free her people. But even then, they had to make her kill innocent civilians because according to the writers, you can't fight for freedom without being bad. And yes, sometimes certain blogs get mistakenly tagged as having verified a campaign on some of them when they have repeatedly stated they are not and have not ever verified fundraisers but that's understandable on some part to Palestinian users when some of the urls they tag have a reputation for reblogging verified fundraisers, as long as someone else on their list of verification has confirmed verification that is a known verifyer and you can find proof, I think you're good. But as el-shab-hussein has repeatedly stated: verification doesnt mean its without its failing and you should use verification as a guide not as a certification, use your common sense.

There are other verification groups across platforms you can cross check with as well, do some work and some research on those platforms. Outside of the well known one like Operation Olive Branch and Gaza Funds you'll find other verification teams on say Instagram like pali.pals, butterflyeffect.project, strawberryseedcollective, watermelonbrigades, etc. Its truly so simple to find more and more teams. And if you're still so hung up on where your money is going, there are many non profits groups and collectives aiding Palestinians on the ground like Fed Up 4 Palestine, Gaza Kinder Relief, Watermelon Relief, Gaza_woundcare and so so many others.

Stop using the "validity" of these fundraisers as an excuse to look away, let alone to be hateful and racist. And when you're held accountable don't run with your fucking tails between your legs with half assed "apologies" that are frankly adding more insult to injury. Those of you who have now fostered this environment of white negligence and callousness owe not only apologies, but compensation to the families whose lives you have literally put at risk with your racism. Okay I've finally figured out why the way Byakuya fans talk about how great he is bothers me so much. Because here's the thing, he's not a bad character. He's well-written, believable, one of the few characters I completely buy as someone Makoto is attached to. Even if I don't like that he survives and others don't, it still makes logical sense in the narrative THH went with. So what is the problem, other than just me personally not liking him?

HE'S NOT A FUCKING ANTAGONIST.

People put him next to Nagito and Kokichi and label him with "the antags" and say he's an antagonist, and he just?? Isn't???? He's the secondary deuterag alongside Kyoko. They have extremely similar roles and stand on either side of Makoto as the deuteragonists. And I can defend this.

An antagonist is defined as someone with a goal that works against the protagonist. Not with them, against them. Makoto is unequivocally the protagonist of THH, I don't think there's anyone who could argue against that; even if you don't like him, he still exists to be the Everyman protag and succeeds by a) being the POV guy and b) not dying in chapter 1. So then, the antagonist would work directly against the goal of Makoto, right? When exactly did Byakuya do that? Chapter 2? That isn't working against him. That was a singular test of Makoto's observational skills. And even if you are going to say that counts as antagonistic behavior, it's a minor point in his arc if anything, because his actual goal is to reveal Genocide Jill before she actually attacks anyone. It simultaneously removes her from the pool of suspects for mastermind, which is in-line with Makoto's overarching goal- find the mastermind and end the game. In fact, Byakuya straight up announces to everyone once this chapter ends that his goal is to find and defeat the mastermind, which is THE SAME GOAL AS MAKOTO AND KYOKO. Not to mention, for the entire rest of the game after this, he's working with Makoto, and never works against him ever again. He rejoins the class in the next chapter, whether he admits that's what he's doing or not, and he actively helps Makoto in almost every investigation in the entire game, with the one exception being chapter 1. Even when he has his "ego downfall" moment in the chapter 4 trial, he's not actually being an antagonist there, either. He's still working for the same goal as everyone else(besides Hina ofc), finding the culprit. I guess you could make the argument his rivalry is with Kyoko, not Makoto, but that's only really a theme in chapter 5 and it's the side effect of a purposeful setup from Junko. Even then, Byakuya is on Makoto's side for basically the entire trial, trying to save his life and prove his innocence. That's the opposite of antagonistic.

In conclusion, he's not the antagonist; he's just a tsundere with a character arc about the magic of friendship.

The teacher who found them and sent the girls away didn’t take them to the nurse or call an ambulance or do anything. Trying so hard to keep it together and not break down at work. It’s heartbreaking. I feel so powerless. There’s so much suffering, so many innocent people dying every day, just for existing.

I’m so lucky that I live in a city where I’m (relatively) safe. I may get called slurs on my commute, or misgendered regularly, but I don’t feel like my life could be stolen from me. Most people don’t have that luxury. Palestinians don’t have that luxury, many of my trans siblings don’t have that luxury. I want to use my privileges to DO something! I only have so much money.
