ok last thing. but what people fundamentally need to get through their heads is the significance of gaza fundraisers not being the same as like mutual aid when you're helping someone get groceries, because it is a genocide. there is insane deliberate scarcity and prices are unmanageable, because there is nowhere nearly enough for everyone, so only people who can pay can eat. and what positioning individual fundraisers as the only course of action does is quite simply give a tiny percentage of random people whose fundraisers take off the ability to pay those prices while thousands of others can't. and every one of those thousands of people without a fundraiser is suffering through the same inconceivably horrific reality. it is giving a few completely desperate people out of hundreds of thousands a slightly more favorable position in a horrific war economy of imposed scarcity. and what grassroots community kitchens do is try to mitigate in some small way that inconceivable hierarchy of who can pay and who can't, by stretching ingredients as far as they can last to cook meals at large scale and give them out at no cost. and obviously people are still going to send money to their friends and families because this is hell what else are we supposed to do but please just think about that before promoting endless individual fundraisers as somehow the most ethical way to help

seeing folks scramble to get their paperwork in order for things like name changes & while i've been on/off considering it for years, i just...idk. i probably won't, especially in the next couple of months

i knew i absolutely did not want an X gender marker - completely understand that for some folks it was affirming, but to me that always seemed like a recipe for targeted harassment & i am now hearing that many folks who went for it are attempting to remove it before the approaching US regime change

i feel sort of similarly about doing a legal name change while not changing my gender marker. do i want goverment/medical/etc. employees to keep deadnaming me? no. do i want the government to have an easy way to know i'm trans? also no. i mean i doubt it's as much of an issue - people get their names changed for all kinds of reasons, people have all kinds of names, i am probably more at risk just looking very visibly GNC than having a legal name that doesn't "match up" to my birth assignment, but ugh. i will keep putting it off mostly for the reason that it just seems like a bureaucratic nightmare

Grimmway Farms has issued a recall of select organic whole carrots and organic baby carrots that should no longer be in grocery stores but may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers. These products may have been contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) O121:H19. E. coli O121:H19 is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system. Some infections can cause severe bloody diarrhea conditions, such as a hemolytic uremic syndrome, or the development of high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and neurologic problems. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting. The incubation period for E. coli O121:H19 in humans can range from 24 hours to as much as ten days. The average incubation period is 3 to 4 days.

The following recalled products were shipped directly to retail distribution centers nationwide in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada: - Organic whole carrots, which do not have a best-if-used-by date printed on the bag, but were available for purchase at retail stores from August 14 through October 23, 2024, - Organic baby carrots with best-if-used-by-dates ranging from September 11 through November 12, 2024. The recalled carrots should not be available for purchase in stores but may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers.

as of time of posting, the main FDA recall page and the CDC investigation page have an error and do not list Kroger or LIDL baby carrots, while the FDA outbreak investigation page does. I am assuming that this means they are part of the recall and that this error will probably be fixed soon.

the recalled carrots are thought to be associated with an E. coli O121:H19 outbreak. 39 illnesses, 15 hospitalizations, and one death have been linked to this outbreak so far.

as always, these numbers are expected to be lower than the true number of illnesses and deaths, and will likely rise. not everyone seeks medical attention, and even when all testing and reporting procedures go as smoothly as possible, it can take weeks to officially link an illness to an outbreak.

noteworthy from the FDA investigation page:

FDA is working with the firm to determine the source of contamination and whether additional products are affected. This advisory will be updated as information becomes available.

in short, there is a possibility this contamination may affect more than just the recalled carrots. keep up to date with these pages to stay on top of this outbreak.

the recalled carrots are no longer on shelves. but if they are in your fridge or freezer, destroy or discard them and clean anything they may have touched.

do NOT eat these carrots! this strain of e. coli is dangerous and at least one person has died.

if you think you got sick in relation to this outbreak, please seek medical attention, even if just to get your illness officially associated with this outbreak.

i can't decide if i want to try to eat as many of my favorite glutens in the next like...two weeks before i give everything up again, possibly for the rest of my life, or if eating a bunch of delicious bread knowing it's the last time i'll have it will make everything worse :')

drove a cumulative 4 hours today to be (basically) re-diagnosed with celiac disease for the nth time. not doing great about it

went to see the Big Specialist at the Big Hospital who pretty much told me he thinks my GI doctor of the past 3 years sucks ass (i know this. i agree with this) & mishandled my case & that it's very likely to just...still be celiac even though i'm seronegative & seemingly asymptomatic & the intestinal damage didn't heal after a year of GF. he thinks i might need some kind of steroid treatment on top of going completely GF again. he's gonna look at all my biopsies & get back to me but he said he's like 99% sure it can't be anything else & in fact it's not outrageously rare for it to present like this (it IS rare like let's be fucking for real. i'm in an extreme minority of celiac cases. but he has met & treated other people like me)

it was literally a 2 hour appointment, i talked to an intake nurse, a med student, the celiac specialist & then a dietician on top of that. shockingly none of them were shitty to me!! even the dietician! i had to explain to her that i am in special hell due to GF/DF + ARFID & she actually fucking knew what i was talking about & was compassionate & validating?? rather than making fun of me? the bar is on the floor but they all cleared it

but i'm fucking exhausted from traveling & crying. i have been yanked around for 3+ years, i have been diagnosed & un-diagnosed & re-diagnosed & every single time it upends my life. guess we'll fucking see what happens now that i have competent doctors working on it. i hope. who knows maybe they'll un-diagnose me again
