"Why didn't I learn this in history class?"

Lemme talk about something a bit more serious today. Because ever since I started to ramble once more about historical context for Castlevania Nocturne I have gotten asked this one so often:

"Why did I not learn this in school?" Or: "Why did I not learn this in history class?"

And I shall tell you why: Because school sucks.

I do not mean this in some exaggerated way or hyperbolic way or anything. School sucks. And you do not go to school to learn anything useful, you go to school for two reasons: a) So that you are out of the hairs of your parents and they can be exploited at their work place. b) So that you learn to listen to authority from a young age on and get some basic skills that you will ideally be able to leverage for your own exploitation.

I am sorry for sounding so darn Marxist right now, but that it is it.

And here is the thing: Because the entire school system is build towards exploitation, nobody actually wants you to learn about actual history. It could give you ideas, and that would be very tragic, wouldn't it?

Depending on the country you live in, history class mainly is concerned with two things. Teach you a bit about the bad stuff, and then also get some nice patriotic propaganda into your head. The latter stuff is especially strong in the US. I mean, pretty much every kid learns some variation of the entire darn "thanksgiving" bullshit. I just will leave you with the Adam's Family Values scene about this.

I mean, this is especially noticable right now of course, where everyone is crying about kids maybe learning just a little bit of real history in school - and so many people trying to forbid it.

In Germany, our history class basically goes like this: We note everything that has happened until 1900 in about three hours, only doing a very, very rough overview, and then we will talk about the Weimar Republic, First World War, Third Reich and Second World War at nauseum. Which could be good, if we actually talked about how the Nazis came into power. But if you ever talk with any random German who has not studied history, you will notice that most of them are of the opinion that the Nazi party was not elected in the popular vote, and that at least 40% of all people in the Third Reich were in fact against Hitler. Both of those things are not true. Nazis were elected - and they used some trickery to stay in power - and more than 90% of Germans were in full support of Hitler.

And the French Revolution? Obviously you will not learn about that. It might give you ideas. You know. Ideas what to do with unelected people who rule your country. And if you learn about the French Revolution, you might see how there are certain parallels to modern times.

You see, those who do not learn from history, are fated to repeat it.

Which kinda brings me to the even more radical part of this. You know what you can do to really fucking annoy those in power? You can learn about history. And you can teach others about history.

They will often tell you, that history is not as important as STEM. And in some way, sure: History will not cure cancer, and it will only do so much to help with climate change. But... It will teach you about how to recognize tyranny. And how to fight it. And frankly, under tyranny you will most likely not get cured of the cancer, let alone climate change. So yeah, tyranny - and getting rid of it - is important.

like im literally sitting here crying having read that last post about elon musk to my parents and like. i feel so fucking powerless. i know a lot of people who this affects and i know a lot of people who do not support trump, musk, or their henchmen, but that doesn't change the fact that half the country supposedly supports this. trans lives, queer lives, disabled lives are all in danger. people of color's lives are in danger. basically everyone is in danger except old straight white men in positions of power, and they're the ones making the rules. how this has been allowed to happen is staggering. at what point is someone, or many someones, able to step in and stop this? and in the meantime, what are we supposed to do? inflation is insane, the tariffs are about to make everything even worse, so the measly amount people on social security are expected to live on isn't going to stretch nearly as far, and that's if they even receive their payments at all. im fucking terrified, im shocked, im disgusted, and i get the intentions behind the whole "we survived the four years of his first presidency, we'll survive these, too" but that's not true. there are many people who will not survive this. people are going to lose their homes, their ways of life, and the current administration will continue to perpetuate the stigma against those who are unhoused and continue to cut funding for anything that actually matters. and to all the people who voted for trump who will be affected by this... i WILL be saying i told you so.

Every single time Trump has wanted to build a fucking golf course, he has scrubbed aside the local residents, ripped up the environment, and then claimed everyone welcomed the riches... riches that never came their way.

Biden's bombs flattened the cities of Gaza, via Netanyahu, and now Trump wants the cream of naked earth, but not for housing people already pushed around and murdered. And Bibi is salivating at this.

The American people did not ask for their tax dollars to be spent on this, and no matter how loudly they protested, and protest now, their government would not be swayed. Americans whose heritage and family ties lie in the Middle East withdrew their vote, but made sure to loudly declare, "If not voting for Kamala means Trump gets elected, then so be it." They wanted to be heard, but weren't listened to. That's also because those who had Israeli heritage declared that support for Palestine was anti-Semitic, and Kamala would pay at the ballot box if she caved to other demands.

So the world ended up with Trump, because 40% of American voters didn't want to vote at all. Oh, and Trump sees this as an overwhelming mandate, which it isn't.

Now we are very likely to watch a bitter, long drawn out armed conflict suck in countries from all over. Who's simply going to tell Trump to fuck off this time?

aghhhhh I really love your Zaunite!Jayce Piltovian!Viktor AU, looove making Viktor an orphan to keep him not having a house name, love that without his own hangups he just narrows and focuses all of his attention and care onto Jayce.

Also I like a lot of the little changes! like the Kirammans still supporting him from the sounds of it, but with his more pacifist nature maybe him being friends with Caitlyn would steer her away from being an enforcer. And he and Mel would have similar anti-conqueror beliefs, though his is a general rejection of power while she prefers to rule behind a throne. Which also makes making Viktor the councilor really interesting, because I can't see him forcing Heimerdinger out but instead trying to be a more active force with similar anti-violence policies where Heimerdinger's long life makes him very passive.

Meanwhile Jayce gets to live his full gremlin dreams, making whatever he wants while his partner has to be nice to people (Viktor always grimaces at the gala invitations and Jayce is always smug that none of them get to see Viktor when he's actually sweet, because he also likes to be a little mean to balance it out and only Jayce gets the full experience. and Caitlyn but siblings don't count).

Also Jayce being like "WE COULD HAVE BEEN FUCKING THIS ENTIRE TIME? FUCK!" is so funny to me oh my god. Viktor is so besotted with him that everyone who knows almost feels bad for the guy and Jayce only gets to learn this as Viktor's in the hex coccoon and wants to make up for lost time the INSTANT Viktor comes out.

Shout out to those of us who have very conservative families, and every time you try to talk about politics or why Trump is not right for this country, it always turns into a fight. It's a very isolating feeling when literally both of my parents, their spouses, my grandparents, my aunt and uncle, and my sisters are all in favor of Trump. Sometimes it makes me feel like the crazy one when everyone around me doesn't have the same opinion or beliefs for this country and the people in it. Regardless, I stick to what I believe in because there are so many people this will effect negatively if he gets into office again.
