I’ve read so many great books lately. I wish I had been writing reviews, but I just kept running to the next! The reviews really do take a minute to write sometimes, especially if I have to quote things and such.

Fruiting Bodies by Kathryn Harlan

9/10 - I absolutely loved this book, and I tried to get everyone around me to read it. The uniqueness of each story line, the accuracy of the emotions, and the realness of each character. It did a great job of blending fantasy and realism.

Detransition Baby by Torrey Peters

8.5/10 - the trans it book of 2021. A interesting story that doesn't try to take on more than it can chew. A great exploration of gender: things I've thought clumisily that I didn't know could be written about with such ease. A beautiful look at family. I was dissatisfied with the ending, but I suppose it had to go that way. Not super plot based, but still an enjoyable read.

Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight against Medical Discrimination by Alondra Nelson

7/10 - A nonfiction book that reads just like someone's doctoral thesis. Not necessarily inaccessible, but it certainly could have been shorter without loosing it's effect. The book covers plenty of background information on the Black Panther Party, and does a great job of putting currently medical discrimination and mistreatment in context. It had me understanding the greater injustice of having to sit in a waiting room for 4 hours. People often mistake the Civil Rights Movement as distant history, but it was only in the last 40 years that black doctors and nurse were welcome in national medical associations, among other inequalities. It really is amazing what the Black Panthers were able to accomplish. I wish we were able to organize like that now.

Been thinking about having different fruit cows to make differently flavored milks. The strawberry ones with broader shoulders and swinging udders as they lean forward, panting and groaning as the machine milks them. The blueberry ones, swollen to be human-circles as they wriggle and slosh their overfilled bodies, barely able to see over their own udders. The cherry ones, practically leaking, every second of every day with a juice that's almost intoxicating. Their udders tinted a blushing red, either from the leakage or the overworked nature of them. The pear ones, wide hips and fat asses that weigh them down as they quiver during the milking. The curve of their thighs practically spilling over the seat of the machine. The watermelon ones who're too big to ever hope to move again, only good for milking and moaning. Maybe a good fuck every now and then.

What would it feel like, to have all of your memories erased in an instant? To watch helplessly as your mind is digested, reformed into something new. A sweet ripe strawberry with no taste of lingering bitterness.

What was it like for Foeslayer, having to do that to her own son?

(There's so much horror potential and tragedy with how his story ends and it's infesting my mind)

been thinking a lot about the masks

They're actually organic, and lie in a dormant state until someone holds it up to their face. A newly-possessed masked is clumsy and awkward; it has swiftly altered the victim's blood to make it a volatile substance to boil off the faces of future victims. They bleed freely when stressed and out of excitement when when seeing prey, before even starting pursuit.

Slowly, over time, a mask's roots grow into any and all available holes within the victim's face (mouth, nose, eyes, and in very old masked, ears) to gain a finer control of the corpse's movements and senses and to keep it in one piece longer, like a tree's roots in dirt. These masks have more restraint for when they bleed, to preserve their blood for the kill, and urban legend says that their blood burns hotter and eats through helmet metal quicker.

Masks are rather docile when not actively hunting. But when they finally get their hands on new prey, they melt off the victim's face and start the process making another one of itself, similar to budding in earth hydras. The new mask is deposited onto what's left of the victim's face, and boom, now you have two mimics!

You can in theory rip a mask off its host with enough brute force, but... well, now you have a dormant mask and a corpse. To actually kill a mask, you have to shatter it, whether it's on a body or not. Any good hammer will do.
