so RTTS (Runaway To The Stars) is a speculative biology world made by Jay Eaton. Their site is here, and they're also here on Tumblr as /jayrockin. RTTS is the most beautifully drawn and written specbio world I've seen, up there with The Birrin Project and Serina: A World of Birds. Eaton has like a decade backlog of art and worldbuilding to look through on their blog, plus the lore on their site, and I highly recommend looking through it. Same goes for the RTTS comic itself, which is currently being posted!

and because it was my birthday I decided to turn the gang into RTTS aliens.

And here are the specific sophont (saptient) aliens the crew are, minus Buddy, which I made up:

Five: An avian, specifically a skimmer avian. Honestly, I should've made them smaller, because skimmers are about 3.5ft tall and by comparison everyone else is huge. Avians have a rather strictly gendered society, which stretches into interactions with other sophonts. While applying human gender and labels to other sophonts can be misleading, Five would be something a human might call "nonbinary," considering themself neither bright nor dun. This, a taboo thing, is something that could contribute to them being at the Company.

Seven: A centaur. Centaurs are far less common space, and seem to only really be around if part of a clan outing. She has a lot of similarities to RTTS' protagonist, Talita: A lone, buffer-then-average sunchaser centaur. and that's about it.

Fifteen: A bug ferret. Bug ferrets function and live in family groups of ~30 individuals, and a solo bug ferret is functionally homeless and can't really participate in society, and isolated bug ferrets don't fare well psychologically; hallucinating, etc, within days of isolation. It's virtually unheard of for a bug ferret to be on their own, let alone working a space-job by themself. he's always on the brink. (and I guess he'd be some flavor of xenogender (using he/him instead of the neutral they/them or xey/xem) too. good for him)

Meanwhile, whatever Buddy is is just something I made up for the drawing. Some alien parasite that is making do without its usual host, with species with borderline-incompatible biologies. While it may have evolved to look similar to its host, its similarities to a human smile are coincidental.

A strange bunch in space, but the Company isn't where people go if they have stable social nets.

How did Buddy get on Nines Face in the first place? Was Bubby a new Mask made by another mimic or had Nine put on the mask in someway and got got?

it's something I intentionally left vague! but based on how buddy was alone, it can be presumed nines picked it up as a dormant mask and put it on.

the past couple of days I've been thinking about those headcanons people have about masks having bug legs to scurry around with. I'd imagine masks would be very shy about moving with people around, but Buddy trusts its crew enough to stick a leg out and want to hold hands.
