Fortnight of Books 2024: Day 1
Overall - best books read in 2024?
The Rosemary Tree by Elizabeth Goudge: The only book that has ever made me sob from the beauty of it
The Everlasting Man by G.K. Chesterton: The style is overly dense in some places, but this may be the best thing I've ever read by Chesterton
Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon: A sensation novel with a great main character, mountains of atmosphere, and one of my new favorite writing styles
Vanity Fair by William Thackeray: Such a rollicking fun style, such a snarky narrator, such a twisty story. Fascinated me even when it frustrated me.
The Ark by Margot Benary-Isbert: Absolutely enthralled by the book's depiction of post-WWII Germany. I've never read a cozy post-apocalyptic story before.
Best series you discovered in 2024?
The only new-to-me series I read more than one novel from in 2024 was the Barchester Chronicles by Anthony Trollope. I loved both The Warden and Barchester Towers for their compassionate character work and their blend of Austen-like domesticity with church politics.
Best reread of the year?
The Q by Beth Brower. It was a favorite read of last year, but not much of the story stuck with me. This year, I was obsessed with the love story.
I also really enjoyed revisiting the rest of the Little House series. The Long Winter assured me my childhood crush on Cap Garland was not misplaced. Little Town on the Prairie in particular felt like rediscovering an old favorite, and These Happy Golden Years was such a nice reading experience that validated it as a favorite of the series.

alex and nigel
what they would’ve actually looked like
#almost the exact same 💀#age accurate like minds#well about as accurate as i can get it#it’s difficult to find younger pics of eddie and photos of tom from late 2002-2003 are nonexistent#however the chosen pic is behind the scenes to being julia which came out in 2004 so be likely would’ve been freshly 18#if not seventeen depending on how early into production he shot his scenes.#i know he mentioned being amongst ‘every other seventeen year old in london’ while auditioning#so it’s possible he was still nigel’s age but i doubt it#he was also working on vanity fair at that same time. i just figure that this image is a bit more clear given that he isn’t decked out-#-in elaborate historic clothing#but look at eddie omg#he doesn’t look too much different but there’s an innocence behind his eyes that alex was lacking (for a reason that is no big mystery)#like minds#nigel colbie#murderous intent#alex forbes#like minds 2006#alex forbes x nigel colbie#tom sturridge#eddie redmayne

Vanity Fair, 2016
image reads: "I’d have to imagine that, for Styles, the feeling is mutual. I’m sure he [...] said, “Awww,” and texted Rylance, writing, “Thanks for the kind words, Mr. Rylance.” And then another text message, from “L,” (link that leads to article about Louis) popped up on Harry’s phone, reading, “Agree w everything Mark said, but u knew that. Home soon.” And Harry smiled that incredible smile, and then Tuesday continued on like normal." - when Vanity Fair writes Larry fanfic. You're so real for this, Richard L.

Thoughts on the Chernobyl HBO miniseries (assuming you’ve watched it)? I really enjoyed it but I’ve heard that some big parts of it were inaccurate
Sorry this took awhile to get to I had classes all day
I really liked the show, a lot of it was fairly accurate, but it’s a tv show so of course some things were played up for dramas sake and shock value. The only part of it that really stuck out to me was the way they portrayed radiation poisoning, it’s not completely false I suppose… but its definitely not accurate lmao
It’s been awhile since I watched it, I prefer actual documentaries when it comes to real stories, but from what I remember they showed the firefighters skin as like translucent almost??? Which isn’t how that works. They also showed in one of the scenes a power plant worker bleeding immediately after holding a door open to which also isn’t accurate. Radiation sickness technically can cause bleeding like that, but it was way too soon for it to be happening. I could go on, but radiation sickness isn’t the most fun topic
The only thing I specifically disliked about the show was the public response, which isn’t really the fault of the creators. The amount of tourists doing stupid shit in the exclusion zone/Pripyat just makes me cringe. People moving untouched items, painting radioactive things ‘fun’ colours for cool photo ops, taking radioactive materials as souvenirs… awful. I even remember this one ‘sexy’ photo in a decontamination suit posted on instagram that was taken in the middle of the city. Its disrespectful. Not to mention A HEALTH HAZARD. But Chernobyl tourism is a different topic entirely.
Buy yeah, thinking back to the show radiation sickness is the only inaccuracy I can really remember, other then the miners getting naked in the tunnels, that didn’t happen, but it was funny so Ill give them that!
#Vanity Fair has a video of a chernobyl doctor watching clips from the series#very informative!!#highly recommend#chernobyl#hbo chernobyl#hbo series#nuclear history#nuclear disaster#this is literally proof dont get me talking#i will yap

#its seems we really may be at the end of vanity#i missed a call from my dad and thought we might be in a connors birthday situation but no. not yet#he did say that it feels like this is it bc my mom's situation is complicated bc she has so much wrong at this point#its like a h0use md episode. the doctors dont seem to kno what to do and shes not very coherent#so my dad was saying that i should look at flights and by tonight hell let me kno if i should pull the trigger and buy a one way ticket home#it sucks. he sounds rough. i feel so bad for him. his wife of 29 years is dying#its not fair. shes only 53#i wanna be there but im stuck here across the country. i wanna go home. thats a bit frighting tho bc itll take me at least 10 hrs to travel#and i dont want her to die while im in the air but i also dont want her to suffer#i hope she gets better but if she doenst i hope its fast. there dont seem to do any good options. shes so tried and its so complicated#and if she does get better than this then what would that even mean? my sister says it doesnt feel like there will b a better anymore after#this. and bless her to the ends of the earth she reached out this morning and was giving me updates#comforting to kno im not just being dramatic. its actually just really bleak#its kinda funny tho. my sister was like meh it doesnt seem so bad and then like 10min later she was like yeah no i was wrong its sorta#horrible apprently shes been deterorating#god. if i go back home do i take clothes for a funeral? do i keep up to date with my genomics class? will i become offset from my graduate#cohort? will i get my wish to play with legos at home? all questions worth considering#well. ill deal with whatever comes. so it goes. itll b fine. i mean ill b fine#just sad ya kno?#three weeks ago she was alright and saying she could fly out to take care of me after oral surgery#now shes dying#unrelated
