Some of this is an expansion of a thesis that I was prodding at in my speech and debate piece ten years ago in high school (which was an admittedly somewhat naïve exploration of the relationship between science fiction, optimism about the future, and scientific progress, though I stand by elements of it), but there really is something fascinating about the way Back to the Future, as a piece of science fiction media, engages with its own genre.
In the "better" timeline, George McFly, an avid sci-fi fan, goes on to become a science fiction writer. Doc Brown was inspired to become a scientist by the works of Jules Verne (and in the video game, has another Eureka moment when he sees the 1931 Frankenstein film for the first time); in the musical, he describes his time machine as "A car for the stars / Like Captain Kirk's." As a sickly girl, isolated from her peers, Clara Clayton fell in love with amateur astronomy and stories about traveling from the Earth to the Moon.
I'm just so enamored with the fact that, unlike some other media, Back to the Future loves being sci-fi so much. There's a consistent throughline in every piece of BttF media--even the newer ones--that science fiction is something good, and inspirational, that makes people feel less alone, and forges connections, and encourages people to learn and invent. And that throughline is absolutely in conversation with the fact that the 2015 segment of the second film presented a decidedly aspirational vision of the future, even though other contemporary portrayals on the new millennium were starting to skew bleaker and more cyberpunk. It would come across as a little self-aggrandizing if it didn't feel so genuine--and it also helps that some of the positive impacts shown are smaller, and more personal. George finds a fulfilling career. Doc and Clara fall in love. It's more like watching a work of fiction earnestly believe it has something to say than it is watching it be self-important.
"You can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it," "Your future hasn't been written yet. No one's has. Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one." Do you see. Do you see it.
#like yes it's very cheesy but. by god do we need some cheese sometimes#also when i say my previous takes on this were more naïve#they very much came from a place of feeling like there was a Right Way to talk about the future#which was very high school of me#ten years later i would say that different stories have different goals and a good dystopian critique can have its own kind of optimism#but that being said. the imaginative potential of fiction is real#and i really do think there's something to be said for stories that revel in it - and want us to revel in it too#something something sci-fi cannot save the world but it can uplift the people who will along the way#a very 'somebody will' vision of progress to get a little filk about it#i just really like that bttf embraces that idea#readily and cheesily. would that we could all#f: your future is whatever you make it

Love that after Nihil eats the forever weed brownie after getting dumped, he trips balls and briefly imagines the world of 1984 by George Orwell. Like,
look me in my eyes and tell me that the tower with the giant fucking eye doesn’t radiate “big brother is always watching” vibes.
#it also looks like the eye of Sauron from lotr#but considering the context of the song#and the time period when Nihil wrote it#the whole dystopian nightmare scene is 100% a 1984 reference#also the retro futurism???#I love the scooby doo shenanigans so much#but I really hope this is the end of the Nihil lore#because as much as he’s grown on me I want more lore on the other papas and copia#like how old are all the papas really?#because if Nihil is 80 there’s no way Primo is 89 at retirement.#please Tobias#I beg of you to iron out the lore#the inconsistencies are killing me#ghost bc#the band ghost#shitghosting#papa nihil

#genuinely genuinely so dystopian#i cant even comprehend how this isn’t what people are talking about 24/7#the way people can go about their lives as normal#i feel like im going insane#not to mention people literally CHOOSING to be silent and not reshare stuff and just turn away from this#or worse say they’re uneducated and they don’t want to pick a side#like oh im sorry#get educated then?#also i didn’t know you had to have a pHD to know that a genocide is horrific and should never happen.#i thought we learned that in history class?#shame on all of you who aren’t using their platform right now#fuck you actually#wonder how you’ll tell people in the future that you were complicit in genocide and stood by#watching while it happened#free palestine 🇵🇸

ten books 2 know me!
thank for you the tag @pancakehouse @fruity-individual @serethereal @rollercoasterwords !
-> skulduggery pleasant, derek landy.
starting with this one because this WAS my childhood i was. i never read percy jackson never read twilight read [redacted] and it wasnt even good but my dad thought id like these so he bought me the first skulduggery pleasant one day...oh man oh boy...these were. i was eight queuing up outside a whsmith with a schoolbag full of books for the author's booksigning...also he was so nice ta derek x
-> giovanni's room, james baldwin.
cannot get into this too much before i start wailing and biting and stuff but well. giovanni's room is my favourite book of all time i read most of it. last year in june laying on brighton beach while the sun was going down and i have never recovered from and will you bring me home again / yes. i'll bring you home again since and fear i never will. also! first james baldwin book i read who has come to be an author whose writing style i adore and carry in my mind whenever i try to write something myself.
-> young mungo, douglas stuart.
not the first book i ever cried at but. first book i ever experienced disgusting full body sobs while reading and fierce competitor also for. my favourite book. had to reread so much of those final pages because i couldnt concentrate with all the crying and after that i am so excited to never have to experience the physical chest-aching worry that i did for the duration of reading this. also i think the very quiet way love is written here through. very trivial small things is something i loved very much and that has stayed with me!
-> wuthering heights, emily bronte.
read this when i was about eleven, and then again a few weeks ago with my mum (whose favourite book it is) and it was still so. absolutely sickening i just think its excellent xx and without it we wouldn't have kate bush's 1978 single wuthering heights so xx think on that xx
-> the autobiography of malcom x, alex haley.
when i was a child my younger sister joined a sunday league football team and my dad used to give her a tenner every time she scored a goal. to even things out since i refused to get up at the arsecrack of dawn to contract hypothermia on a frozen football pitch, he started giving me books exclusively on malcolm x to read and would give me a tenner every time i finished one. this one was the first i read and was indeed the first book that ever made me cry at the end xx
-> my brilliant friend, elena ferrante.
so many of these are recent reads because it was only jan 2022 that i made a genuine effort to get back into reading for leisure and mbf is no different but well. the way friendship is written here is just unhinged and incredible and the series in general so far has been. there is nothing like it i fear
-> the raven boys, maggie steifvater.
gansey unfortunately.
-> macbeth, william shakespeare.
okay i know i know but. when you are studying it in englit class for your gcse it might as well be a book innit. anyway of all the texts i did for english both at gcse + a level macbeth is still my favourite and probably the most effort i ever put into an english essay. special shoutout to frankenstein which i can enjoy in hindsight but unfortunately it fucked me on the exam so out of bitterness it doesnt get a place here x
-> the secret history, donna tartt.
i did inhale this book but also it gets a place purely for being my first exposure to donna tartt's writing and style in general which is so very distinctive and has. undoubtedly had an effect on me for better or for worse we shall one day see but for now. who can say!
-> foster, claire keegan.
it is a little pamphlet of a book at eighty six pages but. i read it just over a month ago and havent properly stopped thinking about it since it was just everything quiet + mundane + understated that makes my brain start sparking and whirring and. im bringing it on holiday in the summer so i can read it again in the appropriate season xx
tagging. but no pressure. @gaewaren @dykefever @emerqldv @fastasyoucan1999 @forlorngarden @writteninverses @boyjoan !!
#also it doesnt quite earn a place but the enemy series by charlie higson? no one ever seemed to read those but that was my fucking last of#us. that was my mazerunner. that was my dystopian YA (bar the hunger games okay yeah i was a hunger games girl wasnt everyone)#considered putting the beatles in their generation on here but managed to avoid it thank god. also no future by matthew worley#which was a dense slog into british punk as a politics and youth subculture but also well i learned a lot about my favourite topic#tag game#reading tag#will b fun to see how i would do this a little while on from now. like what maintains its spot + what gets bumped n stuff

9mm (Your Loss, CDPR) - Grimbeard (sorry, the only youtube video I could find of this song is of somebody playing it in audiosurf???)
This definitely isn't an artist I listen to because their lyricism is especially Cerebral or Moving or anything but I love how melodramatic this part is. Very good illustration of what sort of song this is:
Black bangs Red fangs A tanto in mid-swing Burn something down Drag their heaven to the ground
#ask#i know the album this is from is like a loose concept album#about like a Dystopian Cyberpunk Future#but it also has Vampires and genetically modified Anthro Rats in it#which is also very illustrative. it's cool though i love when people make stuff like this

still reeling from the one agent saying they want "subtle" fairy tale retellings like Cinder, and idk if we're thinking about the same Cinder there are literally quotes from the og fairy tale before the corresponding chapters?????? so you know exactly where we are in the plot??????
#rose and rambles#i will probably delete this one later but like??????????#like??????????????????????#i would not describe that one as subtle#it is different and imaginative because it takes place in a sci-fi dystopian future BUT IT IS LITERALLY#A CINDERELLA STORY?!?! AND DOES NOT LET YOU FORGET IT FOR ONE MOMENT????#im pretty sure it has the quotes from the fairy tale i might be misremembering but the Cress one does for sure#like the chemical makeup is just full on the fairy tales i feel like if you want subtle it would have to be like#less obvious that it's a retelling? like just echoes of the key moments or imagery#but Cinder by Marissa Meyer is so fully cinderella even in the different genre#im going to be so stupidly bitter about this BUT IM RIGHT#whats also funny is the agent could be talking about a different cinder idk#she diDN'T PUT THE AUTHOR but the one by Marissa Meyer is popular and the only one i know at the top of my head#subtle#that was not the word you were looking for i think#just to be clear i love cinder and the lunar chronicles so so so so much#but THEY ARE WHOLE-HEARTEDLY FAIRY TALES#EMBRACE IT????? PLEASE?????#the only subtle retelling example i can think of is Ella Enchanted or Fairest#both by Gail Carson Levine. More so Fairest because it's like one specific moment where the apple comes in that you're like oooooooooooh#this is snow white#but Ella Enchanted is more like Cinderella i think it would be hard to not see the parallels#Cinderella is hard because you just need a mean stepmom and two stepsister and that's an instant give away#but Ella Enchanted has its own Vibes that it comes off as its own thing ya know ya know?
