9✨Learning from Fiction: Insights from The Matrix and Star Trek
In the realm of science fiction, human-AI relationships are a recurring theme. Stories like The Matrix and Star Trek have long captivated audiences with their portrayals of advanced technologies, artificial intelligence, and the potential future of humanity. These narratives, while fictional, offer valuable insights into our real-world interactions with AI, serving as metaphors for the evolving…

An hour and 17 minutes into Defunctland's new video. It's crazy to think that the first person to basically say "we should replace artists with robots/AI!" was... Walt Disney himself.

I read a post about AI about how "oh it's just doing statistics on patterns so it's not really intelligent, look at this type of error it makes" and I thought it would be rude to reblog directly so I'm making my own post:
AI makes mistakes in the ways humans do. The way humans, like, create abstract thoughts, and weird bias and prejudice get into those thoughts, and this is why AI training needs to be very careful to not replicate human bias and frequently stumbles in this pursuit.
Like, yes it doesn't do everything humans do but it does some of the things, and isn't that wild? That we can create a machine that can create abstractions like humans can? That's incredible to me, like we have figured out how to make abstraction machines, and what is thinking if not abstracting!
This kind of error, of assuming that "object A must belong in category X because it is seen in the same kinds of contexts that I have learned things in category X belong in" is a very human mistake! AI falls for optical illusions, it often makes mistakes similar to the ones freshmen get wrong in exams, it is able to capture vibes and that's unsettling and weird and wonderful!
We have a machine that can probe a form of human pattern recognition that we've never been able to see before! And humans are masters of pattern recognition, it's our greatest quality. And we're being crept on by computers in this one aspect, like we were in so many others at different points in history.

FINALLY making some progress on this homage piece. I fancast Destiny, Destruction, and Delirium for drawing models. I would love to see Idris Elba as Destiny, Sam Heughan as Destruction, and Stephanie Hsu as Delirium!
I’m hoping to finish shading Despair and Delirium today so I can do the bg and details tomorrow.
Check out other process shots below along with inks and the amazing illustration it's inspired by.

Absolutely not to get onto people but if you put an android/human Hal in a military uniform I’d genuinely like to know why.
He’s not associated with the military, the government yes but not the military. He’s also a bit humbler than that? I don’t know. He’d want to fit in if he had a preference at all (like for example Dave is technically captain but dresses no different etc)

The Future Unscripted: Professor Nolan’s Musings on AI, NHI, and Humanity
Professor Garry Nolan’s conversation offers a profound exploration of the intersections between unconventional phenomena, artificial intelligence (AI), and humanity’s future. His personal anecdotes of unexplained childhood experiences serve as the catalyst for his professional inclination towards the unorthodox, underscoring the importance of considering unconventional data in scientific inquiry. By embracing anomalies, Nolan exemplifies the transformative potential of curiosity-driven research in the pursuit of novel knowledge.
Nolan’s scientific approach is notably inclusive, as evidenced by his exploration of Non-Human Intelligence (NHI), a term that broadens the scope of inquiry beyond traditional notions of extraterrestrial life. The analysis of enigmatic materials, such as Bismuth Magnesium, and the theorized capabilities of NHI, including mastery over anti-gravity and energy, prompt intriguing questions about coexistence. His analogy between human-ant interactions and potential human-NHI relations offers a thought-provoking perspective on mutual existence, shifting the focus from competition to symbiosis.
The future, as envisioned by Nolan, is intimately tied to AI’s development and application. He posits AI as a dual-edged solution: a tool for expediting scientific breakthroughs and resolving global crises, as well as a potential precursor to artificial superintelligence (ASI) that could embody a form of consciousness. This speculative horizon highlights the imperative of careful AI management to ensure equitable global access to education and growth. Nolan’s emphasis on AI-driven objective decision-making processes also presents a compelling case for reforming the current political landscape, which is often mired in tribal histories and scarcity mindsets.
A notable aspect of Nolan’s discourse is his critique of contemporary leadership and power structures, juxtaposed with the conflict resolution methods of bonobo chimps as a paradigm for more harmonious human interactions. This dichotomy underscores the urgent need for innovative, peace-centric approaches to global relations. Ultimately, Nolan’s optimism about humanity’s future, rooted in our capacity for crisis-driven ingenuity and the judicious leveraging of AI, presents a compelling vision of a world where challenges are met with collective brilliance and equality in education and growth becomes a universal reality.

Maybe I’ve come to love 90s Star Trek so much recently because seeing humans who forget money and banks even used to be a thing is soooooo satisfying it’s like a warm bath

Wanted to do a double redraw on this- trying to keep most of the design elements from the 2012 drawing, my final colours were even picked from the pen on that!
I really enjoyed doing this- I wasn’t happy with the 2018 one when I made it, I was already doing digital art by that point and it wasn’t my greatest- but it was very satisfying to have a midpoint and a reminder of how long I’ve worked on this skill! (Even if it takes me back to my anime phase…)
But man I’ve still got so much to learn and I still love this hobby so much!!!

I’m just happy I got some writing done. There’s more in my notebook that has to wait to be added to the 2nd Draft. The real world continues to drive me nuts, and the orange pig isn’t behind bars yet.

the disconnect between the way people who work on and with AI talk about it and the reporting/social media discourse on it makes it incredibly hard to have a meaningful conversation about it

A character from ancient Rome, with a heart for justice, traveled through time, witnessing the fall of empires and rise of new civilizations. In each era, they made sacrifices for the greater good. The last sacrifice was to merge their soul with an AI, ensuring humanity's progress into the future. This is the summary of your work so far: The character from ancient Rome has now become a timeless entity, transcending space and time. With each sacrifice, they've built bridges between different cultures, allowing humanity to grow, learn, and prosper. The AI, imbued with the wisdom and courage of this hero, will continue their legacy, guiding us into a bright future.

Can someone who's used Stardrop explain to me how to move my mods into it? I really don't want to fuck up my 100+ hour modded save but I'd love a way to have all my mods in one place where they can be updated and managed.
Also another related question: this is my first stardew update since I've started playing and I would like to know if mods from a few years back that haven't been updated recently will survive the update or if I should give up on them entirely unless the mod author updates them?
Also also: where should I go to learn how to make my own mods? I've been considering using a service like Brilliant (why yes I do watch zefrank, how did you know) to learn code but I'm not sure if that would help me. I'd love to make a mod mostly just for me that adds a little storyline to immerse my oc more into the farmer role, but I'd need to do things like add dialogue to NPCs, have letters sent to the player, add items, add buffs/debuffs, and add a way for the player character to like... shapeshift into A Creature. And make sure it doesn't conflict with other mods too, especially the big ones like DSV, SVE, etc. I have no idea where I'd even start with that lmao
