I was watching clips from 2000s era Marvel movies earlier and it's so weird looking back at how superhero movies used to focus on just the central superhero and their supporting cast instead of trying to include as many cameos as possible (obviously, part of that was due to multiple studios owning different characters, but you still don't have the FF randomly showing up in X-Men) and the story would be contained and complete in one movie instead of being a set up or trailer for the sequel bc they couldn't be sure they would get another film - idk I think I kind of miss that, and the shared universe thing was fun and had potential for awhile, but now it's so messy and unfocused, like, wdym the rumoured plot for the next Spider-Man film is street-level Civil War with 557438 other heroes teaming up lol
i know right 😩 i miss those simple marvel (and dc) movies. now they have to stuff every single character and include plot points that dont even make sense just to advertise the next movie and thats why the movies feel so bloated and boring now. it makes movies like quantumania and love & thunder, with its inclusion of kang and zeus and hercules feel stupid and its only point is to try and tease the next movie… oh well! they will learn their lesson eventually when more movies flop
and i dont even wanna think about spiderman 4 LOL it looks like tom is half way out the door or seemingly wants to take a long break from it. no way home made a lot of fucking money but the story was so paper thin and full of contrivances that i would be tempted to leave too

What if Disney World Had an Olympics?
Created with Wondershare Filmora. Click on or tap the title to see the video.
I was amazed at people managing to recognize the renditions of famous video game soundtracks that played during the Parade of Athletes the opening ceremonies of the Summer Games in Tokyo that I imagined what it would be like if Disney World had an Olympics as mentioned in the title of this mashup. I was also amazed at the renditions of Disney soundtracks that typically play on the WDW Today Channel in hotel rooms that I decided to use footage of the Parade of Athletes for the Summer Games in Atlanta and set it to those renditions, including some that I though were too amazing not to after some rigorous searching, one of which happens to be from a video game itself I had fond memories of playing myself! I'm just glad I decided to also use some royalty free sound effects of a stadium crowd continuously cheering to maintain the exciting atmosphere. After all, it's no wonder I came up with a personal additional reason for delaying the former a year later than intended due to COVID, because the latter was when I started keeping track of those events during my experiences growing up! Here's what to expect in this mashup in terms of the chosen music:
0:00- Following the Leader (Peter Pan)
2:49- The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Fantasia)
5:00- A Spoonful of Sugar (Mary Poppins)
7:36- Whistle While You Work (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)
10:06- Heigh-Ho (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)
12:11- When I See an Elephant Fly (Dumbo)
15:35- A Whole New World (Aladdin)
18:20- Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo (Cinderella)
19:52- Chinese Tea Dance From the Nutcracker Suite (Fantasia)
21:02- Try Everything (Zootopia)
24:16- Andalasia (Enchanted)
25:35- You Can Fly! (Peter Pan)
27:25- Tour of the Kingdom (The Little Mermaid)
28:33- Happy Ending (The Little Mermaid)
29:45- Kingdom Celebration (Tangled)
30:41- Once Upon a Dream (Sleeping Beauty)
33:52- Be Our Guest (Beauty and the Beast)
35:28- The Bells of Notre Dame (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
38:14- Everybody Wants to be a Cat (The Aristocats)
40:30- A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes (Cinderella)
43:18- The Second Star to the Right (Peter Pan)
45:33- Enchanted Suite
50:02- Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? (Three Little Pigs)
52:18- Main Street Electrical Parade
55:29- An Actor's Life For Me (Pinocchio)
57:21- Mean Street (Epic Mickey)
59:23- Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony (Fantasia)
1:02:33- Little April Shower (Bambi)
1:04:31- For the First Time in Forever (Frozen)
1:08:10- So This is Love (Cinderella)
1:09:50- Part of Your World (The Little Mermaid)
1:13:02- Russian Tropak Dance From the Nutcracker Suite (Fantasia)
1:14:12- Circle of Life (The Lion King)
1:20:34- Almost There (Princess and the Frog)

Once Upon a Studio (Series) Season Two; Episode Three: Prescott’s Valentine Mystery
(A special episode)
Info: It’s Valentine’s Day and Prescott had received a letter from his secret admirer which made him wonder who is his valentine’s date.
Characters that would be part of this episode: Gremlin Prescott, Gremlin Gus, Mickey Mouse, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the Mad Doctor, Rapunzel, Eugene, Anna, Kristoff, Jasmine, Aladdin, Cinderella, Prince Kit, Aurora, Prince Phillip, Belle, the Beast, Lumiere, Olaf, the Genie, Hades, Maleficent, Hercules, Meg, Peter Pan, Wendy, Chip, Dale, Basil of Baker Street and Mushu (properly more characters since this is a special episode of season two and Valentine’s Day is my favourite day of the year)
Hint: This episode is based on House of Mouse: Goofy’s Valentine’s Date, Anna was the one who give Prescott a love letter as his secret admirer, Mickey and Mad Doctor decided to give each other a chance in secret, Goofy and Mortimer tried to help King Magnifico to win his ex-wife Queen Amaya back, Chip and Basil hanging out as a sign that they might be dating, Hades and Maleficent are still dating since House of Mouse: Halloween with Hades, and both Judy and Nick had a crush on each other but not ready to tell each other as they hanging out together
My favourite ship(s): Anna x Prescott (AnnScott), Mickey Mouse x the Mad Doctor (MickTor), Judy x Nick, Basil x Chip (ChipSil)
Note: I'm planning to do some once upon a studio series as everyone wants to see if they can lend a hand for me by likes, comments and reblogs their ideas and create arts if they want!
Summary: (beginning) It's Valentine's Day and Magnifico is sad that he thought his ex-wife Amaya doesn’t love him as the day use to be their favourite time of year to spend time together. Mortimer offers to demonstrate how to pick up women, but his own attempts all prove fruitless. And Goofy decides to help the king to win his queen back.
Meanwhile, Prescott, doesn’t have someone to spend time with, receives a love letter from his secret admirer and try to figure out who it was, with the help of Lumiere’s advice to show love and respect to the woman as the gremlin doesn’t know how to be a good gentleman.
Mickey was about to go on a date with Minnie when he spotted the Mad Doctor who was only helping Charlotte with the decorations for tonight, Mickey goes to Doc and tell him to meet him at his bedroom tonight as he had something to tell him.
(End) Goofy tells his friends; Minnie, Mickey, Oswald, Ortensia, Donald, Daisy, Clarabelle, Mickey and Gus that Prescott figured out who his secret admirer really was - Anna! Much to Elsa and Kristoff’s surprise but decided not to ruin the moment as they saw Anna and Prescott enjoying ice cream together.
Mortimer was about to be roasted by Magnifico after all the ideas went wrong when Amaya stopped him by telling him that Valentine’s Day wasn’t the same without him and they decided to put their differences aside and spend time together while it lasted. Hades and Maleficent are pleased to see them together again, much to Mortimer’s surprise.
Later, Mickey went to Mad Doctor’s room and tells him that hed like to give each other a try as a relationship in secret before they share a kiss.

BIOGRAPHY.
dylan  grew  up  in  australia ,  with  his  mother  grace  and  his  father  rowland  isaac .  most  of  their  life  revolved  around  rowland's  job  –  a  military  man .  they  moved  around  often  when  dylan  was  young .  his  father  was  the  person  he  admired  most  and  he  planned  to  follow  in  his  footsteps .  the  signs  of  the  horrors  of  war  were  there ,  but  a  young  impressionable  mind  convinced  itself  that  it  was  to  be  expected  and  that  it  was  a  badge  of  honour .  when  his  little  sister  was  born ,  things  settled  a  bit  more .  they  stopped  moving  as  often ,  allowing  dylan  to  make  friends  while  the  family  was  slowly  starting  to  crumble .  rowland  was  struggling  more  and  more  with  what  he  had  seen  in  active  duty ,  often  having  periods  where  he  did  not  understand  where  he  was  or  who  was  around  him .  more  often ,  grace  would  leave  the  house  for  the  night  and  leave  dylan  and  gwyn  alone  with  rowland .  although  dylan  always  empathised  with  his  father  for  what  he  had  gone  through ,  his  post  traumatic  stress  was  escalating  into  more  than  just  night  terrors .  the  violent  outbursts  became  a  regular  occurrence  and  dylan  often  felt  responsible  for  ensuring  the  safety  of  his  little  sister  and  himself .
approaching  his  high  school  graduation ,  dylan  initially  did  not  want  to  go  to  university .  he  considered  finding  a  job  locally ,  perhaps  working  for  a  gym ,  so  he  could  stay  home  and  keep  an  eye  on  the  family .  after  much  convincing  from  his  both  his  parents ,  he  ended  up  enrolling  at  the  university  of  queensland  for  a  bachelor  in  political  science  in  brisbane .
the  day  before  he  left  for  university ,  his  mother  pulled  him  aside  and  dropped  a  bombshell  on  him .  rowland  was  not  his  father .  his  father  was  a  man  by  the  name  of  haim  khouri  –  an  egyptian  businessman  she  had  met  in  italy  in  a  whirlwind  romance ,  when  she  and  rowland  had  already  been  together  for  a  while .  grace  made  him  swear  he  would  not  tell  rowland ,  fearing  for  his  mental  state .  so ,  dylan  kept  the  secret  from  rowland  and  from  his  sister .
while  at  university  he  contacted  with  his  biological  father .  he  even  flew  out  to  tunisia ,  his  current  home ,  to  meet  him .  dylan  learnt  arabic ,  craving  to  have  a  closer  connection  to  his  paternal  side  as  he  heard  the  struggles  rowland  continued  to  endure .  after  his  bachelor  in  political  science ,  he  followed  it  up  with  a  masters'  in  journalism  at  murdoch  university  in  perth ,  unsure  what  he  wanted  in  life .  following  graduation ,  he  started  work  as  a  political  journalist  in  brisbane ,  first  written  correspondence ,  then  as  a  field  reporter  for  a  local  news  programme .  he  travelled  all  around  australia  and  didn't  get  to  visit  home  as  often  anymore .  however ,  just  after  gwyn's  16th  birthday ,  he  travelled  home  only  to  find  it  in  chaos  and  his  little  sister  covered  in  blood  and  rowland  dead  on  the  floor .
a  lot  changed  after  that .  the  case  was  dropped  and  him ,  gwyn  –  now  florence  –  and  grace  moved  to  the  us .  he  continued  his  journalism  career ,  actively  pursuing  a  path  towards  war  correspondence .  he  had  seen  how  much  war  impacted  those  around  him ,  and  studying  politics  and  international  relations ,  he  knew  that  he  needed  to  report  on  it .  not  long  after  the  move ,  he  was  off  again ,  running  around  active  warzones  and  photographing  and  reporting  on  them  for  cnn .
late  march 2023 ,  dylan  did  not  make  his  scheduled  call .  it  took  48  more  hours  before  he  was  reported  as  missing .  the  envoy  he  had  been  travelling  in  was  stopped  for  what  was  initially  thought  to  be  a  routine  check .  instead ,  he  had  found  the  barrel  of  a  gun  pressed  to  the  back  of  his  head  and  he  was  escorted  away  by  a  terror  organisation .  he  was  not  alone .  two  fellow  correspondents ,  one  from  the  bb c,  one  independent  reporter  from  germany ,  were  also  captured .  the  first  few  months ,  they  were  used  as  a  pawn  in  negotiations  with  the  reporters'  respective  home  countries  and  countries  of  employment .  he  was  kept  in  relatively  comfortable  conditions .  his  captors  demanded  supplies ,  then  money ,  then  weapons .  the  list  never  ended  and  demands  became  too  outrageous .  by  the  time  august  rolled  around ,  it  had  been  claimed  that  all  three  of  them  had  been  assassinated .  the  governments  were  only  able  to  confirm  the  deaths  of  the  english  and  german  reporter  due  to  footage  appearing  on  the  dark  web .  in  reality ,  they  kept  him  around  and  alive  just  for  the  fun  of  torturing  him .
early  october ,  months  after  the  outcries  for  dylan's  release  had  died  down  and  the  news  had  moved  on ,  though  contact  had  remained  between  the  australian  government ,  united  states  government  and  the  terrorists  under  the  radar ,  the  home  he'd  been  kept  in  was  raided  and  he  was  released .  on  his  way  out ,  looking  rather  worse  for  wear ,  one  of  his  colleagues  from  the  cnn  captured  a  photo  of  him .  it  went  viral ,  not  because  he  had  been  presumed  dead ,  but  because  despite  his  injuries ,  despite  his  worsened  physical  and  mental  state ,  he  looked  attractive  in  the  candid  photo  and  the  internet  went  wild .
since  his  reappearance ,  he  has  been  involved  in  talk  shows ,  podcasts &  radio  shows .  he  has  yet  to  see  a  therapist ,  despite  the  horrors  he  now  continues  to  relive  nightly .

January Prompt: Envelope p4.
For SherlockChallenge January's prompt
And now our other mystery solvers
Tumblr media
Mycroft Holmes, Arthur Hastings, and Hercule Poirot under the cut
Mycroft Holmes
Mycroft searched their home until he found MC.  They were making little notes in their latest script.  After watching them for a moment he snuck up from behind and gently blew on their neck, smirking as they jumped slightly.
“Mycroft!”  They scolded with the cutest pout on their face as they turned to face him.
“Yes, my dear?” He sat down next to them and held out an envelope. “If you have a moment I would love to share these with you.”  Their expression quickly shifted to curiosity and moved closer to him.
Carefully he removed the papers from the envelope and grinned as he presented them to MC. Little childish doodles, and shaky words were written across the pages, but he didn’t have to wait long for their eyes to light up with recognition.  “But how?”
Mycroft’s grin only grew as he watched them read over the barely legible writing of their younger self.  “It’s really cute how you always wanted to be an actress.”  He picked up a page of her writing about being in the school play and how much she loved it, complete with a doodle of her on stage, or presumably a stage.  “I want to add these to your album so we can cherish this memory of your youth.”
“I still can’t believe you got these for me.”
He tenderly pushed their hair behind their ear and watched the soft expression on their face, warm as they relived those moments from years ago.  He could let them believe he got those pages only for them, as long as he could keep this moment, their expression, to himself.
Arthur Hastings
Arthur handed MC her bag back, but he couldn’t help the way he stared at the boys who had stopped them on their walk.  They were so excited to get her autograph. He didn’t blame them, but he was aware that they were on a little bit of a time crunch.  The way she smiled at them, it warmed his heart to see her interacting with her fans, but it still ached.
MC slipped their hand in his as they continued down the street.  “Sorry about that Arthur, let’s get-”
“MC!” Diana, her manager, called out to them.  The tall woman was grinning ear to ear, the grin seemed to only increase when she saw Arthur next to her. “Oh this is the perfect timing, I’m so glad I was able to catch you!  You would never believe this, but you know those offices the studio used to be out of a few years ago? Well, they were cleaning out the space for the new tenets and found a lot of old unanswered fan mail the show received! Including… she held out the envelope, “tada!”
Arthur’s stomach twisted in recognition of the handwriting on the envelope, his handwriting.
MC seemed to realize it as well when she glanced up at him. She took the envelope from Diana, and turned it over, showing Arthur’s name and his old address from back then as the return recipient.
“It must be fate’s way of wanting to celebrate you two coming together by having this finally delivered to you! Open it,” Diana giggled and danced a little in place, “I cannot wait to hear what you wrote!”
Arthur quickly grabbed the envelope and held it behind his back, the heat on his cheeks warning him of how red he was turning.  “Maybe this was better off left unread.”
MC looked up at him with those big eyes of theirs that had Arthur feeling like he wanted to share it with them. “If it means that much to you…” They said understandingly, but Arthur could hear the disappointment. He closed his eyes and sighed.
“I’ll read it to you later, when we’re alone.”  He glanced at Diana to make sure she understood.
MC quickly grabbed onto his arm.  “Then it’s a date.”
Hercule Poirot
“Is this all of them?” Hercule started to sort the envelopes that had tumbled out of MC’s bag, placing them into neat little piles.
“All the ones I’ve found.” They sat down across from Hercule watching him as he observed the front of the envelopes before adding them to a category.
“So run me through the facts again, you found these in the dressing room?”
“Yes, well, not exactly. I was changing but there was a rip in the jacket and the head of wardrobe said there should be a jacket from a different production that should work, so we went to go grab it, and in the storage, there was an envelope on the ground and I was surprised to see my name on it.”
“I see,” Hercule flipped on envelope over, observing the front and back, before carefully pulling out the RSVP from the envelope and studied it. “From there you found the bag with the rest of these little envelopes?”
“Yes.” They nodded, nervously looking at the envelopes.
“And these look like your handwriting but you didn’t write these?”
“Yes.” Their shoulders slumped a little.
Hercule looked up from the envelope, turning his attention to them. “Hastings!” He called out.
“Yes?” The tall man with dark hair called from his room.
“If you would, get the kettle going, please. I do believe MC and I could use some tea.”  He looked over at them reassuringly. “Don’t fret, we will get to the bottom of these curious invitations.”
“But the party noted is for this weekend at my home.” They reached out for one of the envelopes and read over the RSVP, slightly shaking.
“Well, then may I suggest we look into what it takes to throw a party? Perhaps the person who set these invitations out will be in attendance.” He spoke confidently, bringing a smile to their face, while his gaze dropped to the envelope that had caught his attention earlier. The one with a newer stamp on it than the others.

The transition from television series to film franchise is one that, on occasion, works perfectly. Throughout the years we have seen several successful TV shows turned into even more successful big-screen behemoths, with the likes of 21 Jump Street and The Simpsons receiving Hollywood adaptations. One such series is the 1980s spy-thriller The Equalizer, originally co-created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim. The series was a huge hit in its day but, after ending in August 1989, there were plenty of empty years for fans of the show to yearn for its appearance on their screens once again. Alas, nearly 30 years later, the announcement was made that a Hollywood adaptation was in the works, with the 2014 film of the same name written by Richard Wenk and directed by Antoine Fuqua. The movie starred Denzel Washington (Training Day) in the lead role, with his portrayal of Robert McCall becoming one of his most iconic characters. So, with such a great reaction to the first movie from both lovers of the source material and new fans alike, it was a no-brainer for executives to commission a sequel. With the sequel also managing to capture the attention and love of a plethora of fans, a third installment of the franchise was announced, with that film expected to release later this year. So, with that in mind, here is everything we know about The Legend of Hercules so far.Editor's Note: This article was updated on August 9.
When Is The Legend of Hercules Coming Out? The set release date for The Legend of Hercules has been announced, with it expected to hit our screens on September 1, 2014. Not too long to wait for fans of the franchise to see their hero back in action. Of course, in the current climate of cinema, one must take a release date with a pinch of salt. There can be plenty of alterations and push-backs before our favorite movies finally hit our screens.
Will The Legend of Hercules Be in Theaters? With such a massive hit at the global box office, it only makes sense for Sony to release The Legend of Hercules exclusively in theaters. This will come as great news for fans of the franchise who will want to indulge in all the extravagant action set-pieces on the biggest screen possible, but, for those who would rather watch from the comfort of their own home, all is not lost. As is the trend nowadays, these movies do tend to end up on streaming platforms sometime soon and thanks to Sony's deal with Netflix, the film will likely be available on the streaming service in late 2014 or early 2024.
Is There a Trailer for The Legend of Hercules? On April 24th, Sony tweeted the first official promotional poster for the film:
Is There a Trailer for The Legend of Hercules? On April 24th, Sony tweeted the first official promotional poster for the film:
Denzel Washington looks at his absolute badass best in this trailer, even setting a stopwatch to give some bad guys 9 seconds to decide their fate, all whilst tied to a chair with a weapon aimed at his head. The Italian setting is played upon to perfection, with the choice of music only further emphasizing that this is The Equalizer like we have never seen it before. In just these three minutes, fans of the franchise will already be desperate to pre-order their ticket for opening night, with the typical tense action-filled journey looking back and better than ever.
Since the release of the first trailer, a number of teasers have also been released for Equalizer 3. Here's the first one, released July 25:
The second teaser dropped on July 31, showing Washington's McCall heading to Southern Italy, where he finds both new friendships and new enemies. See it in the player below:
On August 8, yet another new teaser for The Legend of Hercules was released via Twitter, with more footage focusing on the Mafia and how there's "no cure" for their evil. Enter Robert McCall.
Who's In the Cast of The Legend of Hercules? With the first two movies a great success with audiences, many may wonder why or how they managed to capture so much attention. Beyond the high-adrenaline action set pieces, it is the cast that has become the favorites of so many Equalizer fans. Of course, Denzel Washington is the most notable of the ensemble, with his performance as assassin Robert McCall a major factor in this franchise's triumph, but the supporting cast around him has been equally fantastic. So, understandably, fans are waiting with bated breath to find out the full cast list for The Legend of Hercules, hoping their favorite characters will be returning and that there might be some new famous faces joining the cast too. One major addition to the movie is Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds), who will be reuniting alongside Denzel Washington for the first time since Man on Fire which was released back in 2004. Joining Washington and Fanning in The Legend of Hercules are the likes of David Denman (The Office), Sonia Ammar (Scream), Remo Girone (Le Mans '66), Andrea Doddero (Thou Shalt Not Hate), and Bruno Bilotta (The Tourist). Of course, this is just a sample of the great acting talent that will be on display in this third and final film, and fans cannot wait.
What Is The Legend of Hercules About? Another reason so many fans have taken this film franchise to their hearts has been the plot, with high-octane action and tension seemingly around every corner. Locations are often key to the overall feel of an action movie, and, with the first two films taking place near or in Massachusetts, this time, for the final time, they decided to shake things up. For The Legend of Hercules, the plot will be taking place in Europe, specifically in southern Italy, with Robert McCall going head-to-head with the mafia. The official plot synopsis reads as follows:
This plot synopsis is exactly what any fan of the franchise could have asked for, with their action hero taking on seemingly his biggest challenge yet. The Legend of Hercules certainly looks like it will be a powerful and explosive way to finish this great trilogy of action films.
Who Is Behind The Legend of Hercules? As mentioned previously, Richard Wenk and Antoine Fuqua were both writer and director respectively on the first Equalizer movie, with their expertise being applied to the second and, now, the third and final installment of the franchise. Tarak Ben Ammar (Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile), David Bloomfield (A Journal for Jordan), and Andy Mitchell (The Upside) serve as the executive producers on the film. Fuqua and Washington are producing the film alongside Todd Black (Emancipation), Jason Blumenthal (Southpaw), Tony Eldridge (The Equalizer 2), Alex Siskin (The Equalizer 2), Michael Sloan (The Equalizer 2), Steve Tisch (Forrest Gump), and Clayton Townsend (F9: The Fast Saga). Robert Richardson is the cinematographer, who will be applying his wonderful experience to the film, with his filmography including the likes of Once Upon A Time… in Hollywood and The Aviator.
When and Where Did The Legend of Hercules Film? With the third film set in southern Italy, it would be remised for the team to not actually film on location. Principal photography began back in October 2022 on the Amalfi Coast, with filming moving on to Naples and then finally Rome in January 2014. This suggests we are in for not just a fantastic action film, but a wonderful landscape to indulge in during the moments of quiet between the storms.
Who are all the actors from from The Legend of Hercules? Tom Cruise. Hayley Atwell. Ving Rhames. Simon Pegg. Rebecca Ferguson. Vanessa Kirby. Henry Czerny. Shea Whigham.
Is The Legend of Hercules Marvel or DC? The Legend of Hercules is a production of DC Studios and The Safran Company. It will be released theatrically on August 18th from Warner Bros.
Will The Legend of Hercules be good? According to the first reviews of The Legend of Hercules, it’s got a lot of heart, great Latino representation, and a star-making performance by its lead. However, while many reviews say it’s a good sign for DC movies to come, others do call it just more of the same.
Is The Legend of Hercules a good movie? Director Ángel Manuel Soto has crafted a highly entertaining film that lovingly spotlights the Reyes family and their Mexican American culture and allows Maridueña to shine as a hero that everyone can cheer for. August 16, 2014 | Rating: 4/5 |

Hollywood is weird. Periodically studios will release very similar movies in the same year. It probably dilutes the box office for both.
Now we have two animated movies about oversized large red animals - “Clifford the Big Red Dog” and four month later “Turning Red” (from Pixar). I’ve seen trailers for both and although I like animation - they look way to cutesy. I’ll pass…
Below is a list of some of the other “twin” films that have come out in the past 20 years or so. Several of them are also animated films.
1991 - Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Robin Hood
1992 - 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Christopher Columbus: The Discovery
1994/1995 - Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar
1994/1995 - Street Fighter and Mortal Combat
1997 - Dante’s Peak and Volcano
1997/1998 - Prefontaine and Without Limits
1998 - Antz and A Bug’s Life
1998 - Armageddon and Deep Impact
1998 - The Matrix, Dark City & Thirteenth Floor
2000 - Mission to Mars and Red Planet
2005/2006 - Capote and infamous
2006 - The Prestige and The Illusionist
2006 - Happy Feet and Surf’s Up
2010 - The A-Team and the The Losers

Utopia Avenue by David Mitchell review – a musical journey
David Mitchell’s eighth novel, Utopia Avenue, arrives both as a distinct and distinctive book, and as a further chapter in the ongoing “metanovel” that constitutes his work to date. At first, it appears closer in theme and style to the semi-autobiographical Black Swan Green than to the giddying, multivalent Cloud Atlas or The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet: it is placed firmly and with pleasing particularity in the 1960s, and is in effect a coming-of-age novel. What comes of age is Utopia Avenue, “the most curious British band you’ve never heard of”. The band comprises the middle-class folk singer Elf Holloway, who calls to mind Sandy Denny, and who is cautiously examining her sexuality; Jasper de Zoet, whose genius on lead guitar is compromised by aural hallucinations; Dean Moss, bassist, not yet wrenched out of his traumatising family past; and the drummer Griff, who is of the four the most opaque, though we are assured he is a Yorkshireman.
They are brought together and in due course managed by Levon Frankland, previously seen as a much older man in The Bone Clocks, whose fur hat and blue glasses Dean worriedly parses as those of “a queer beatnik”. An immense cast – drawn from homes in Kent, clubs in the West End and parties in New York – attends the band, as Mitchell traces Utopia Avenue’s uneven trajectory from the Gravesend Working Men’s Club and the bar at Brighton Polytechnic via Italy to Manhattan, which seems from the air to float “on glassy dark, a raft laden with skyscrapers”. The band acquire success, ardent fans and a degree of pleasant notoriety, but not – of course – happiness; and Mitchell is expert at excavating the seams of loss, ambition and mere chance that lie under the edifice of fame. Each member experiences the irresolvable tensions between the demands and rewards of art and ambition, and the opposing forces of duty, failure and sorrow. Death arrives suddenly; love is offered, withdrawn and squandered. The impulse to make music is inexplicable, irresistible and constant.
The reader is impelled from the first by a kind of rushing, gleeful energy: “Dean hurries past the Phoenix Theatre, dodges a blind man in dark glasses, steps on to Charing Cross Road …” It is London, 1967. Here is Foyles, here is the Pillars of Hercules pub, here are pigeons on Greek Street; the phone boxes are “littered with Sellotaped-on pieces of paper with girls’ names and phone numbers”. It is both familiar and impossibly distant, the capital as signifier of the era in which the band is formed – modernity butting up against a grim, confined sensibility. There is LSD in the clubs and sex to be had in bedsits and studio flats, but Elf’s father reminds her that “at the bank, we don’t employ married women”, and Dean’s landlady, having turfed him out on to the street, props in the window a sign that reads “BLACKS & IRISH NEED NOT APPLY”.
Set against all this, the band’s reaching after an authentic musical identity represents a generation moving away from postwar manners and mores like a train departing a station, and Mitchell superbly conveys the energy and spirit of the age. I have long considered myself hopelessly ignorant of 20th-century popular culture, but responded to the sight of familiar names and faces with the delighted recognition of having spotted them across a crowded bar: Leonard Cohen, kindly enough, but reluctant to be drawn; Syd Barrett, attentively licking a Rizla; Jimmy Savile, damned by hindsight and broadly despised. Of these cameos, the arrival of an elegant odd-eyed gentleman in a trenchcoat coming down a flight of stairs is particularly delightful, and I often wondered what others had passed me by.
Mitchell is evidently enthralled by both the romance and the practicality of music. The novel is presented as a series of albums – on vinyl, of course – composed of songs, each of which is devoted to a character, so that we are drawn for a time to Elf and her perfidious ex-boyfriend; and then on to Dean, and his large working-class family (Mitchell elects to convey Dean’s class by rendering his estuary accent in type – “What about my gear? Stealing that too, are yer?” – which grates a little). Whole songs and scraps of lyrics by band members are reproduced on the page, and are simultaneously trite and sincere, like all the best pop songs; the frustrating, elusive magic of wresting melody out of four strings and a pick-up is vividly evoked, as Jasper “slams into an amp-blowing, bent-string howl and fires off a scale of triads, sliding from high E, all the way down”.
The novel’s prose is for the most part consciously easeful and frictionless: it is a supremely readable novel, if the quality of readability is taken to be one which is difficult to achieve and a relief to encounter. It is enlivened by an attentive eye for the particulars, as when “rudderless cloud-wrecks float by, unmoored”, or when, at a dinner party, “served in a pea-green porcelain boat, the mussel shells are blue-black on the outside and flint-grey inside … candles are beeswax, linen is starched, cutlery is heavy”. At times, the frictionless quality of the prose extends to the story itself, so that it is possible to read for several pages at a time without quite feeling that events and characters have landed on the consciousness.
The book is most alive and most compelling when Mitchell slips the surly bonds of the realist premise and lands in his own extraordinary imagined worlds. This is particularly the case in his handling of Jasper de Zoet (evidently descended from Jacob of the thousand autumns), who passes the novel fending off a kind of madness which arrived during a game of cricket when he was 16 years old, in the form of a disembodied “knock, knock”. There is a tenderly depicted and entirely persuasive friendship between young Jasper and his schoolfriend Heinz Formaggio, who attempts to unravel the meaning of the knock; and later, when Jasper attends (or appears to attend) a bizarre “psychosurgical” clinic, the reader is in the realm of The Bone Clocks – of the Horologists and the Oil of Souls. Here Jasper is attached by Dr Marinus to a “mnemo-parallax”, revisits his memories in reverse, and is coaxed towards sanity; I suspect it is for the reader to determine whether the novel has turned absolutely to the fantastical, or whether Jasper entered a deep psychosis and emerged more or less healed.
This is not a novel that traces the vertiginous rise and calamitous fall of superstars; it is subtler, and cannot be read as a cautionary tale warning young readers against the perils of fame and fortune. Mitchell does not castigate or punish Utopia Avenue for their yearning after lights and adulation: he is kinder and more wise. He proposes instead that nothing could be more natural, or in fact more commendable, than acting on the old and common longing to be heard above the crowd, even – perhaps particularly – at the cost of security and sanity. After all, says Jasper de Zoet, “applause is the purest drug”.

Thursday Thoughts: Happily Ever After
“Happily Ever After” is the current nighttime spectacular at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. It debuted in 2017 and, we now know, will be replaced with a new show this October.
I’ve seen Happily Ever After many times. I’ve cried on three of those times.
The first time I cried was the night after I found out I’d gotten the Disney Parks Live Entertainment Show Writer internship. The narration at the end got me. “Grab hold of your dreams and make them come true,” it said, and I was doing just that.
The second time was right after my Zeida died. The bit from Up with Russell hugging Mr. Fredricksen got me. Enough said.
The third time was a few nights ago.
Tumblr media
[Image description: Me, standing in front of Cinderella’s Castle in its pre-show lighting. I’m wearing a face mask with WALL-E on it.]
My parents and I had spent the day at Hollywood Studios, but we park-hopped to Magic Kingdom just for the evening, because I told them I didn’t know if I was going to have another chance to see “Happily Ever After” before it’s replaced. We walked up Main Street U.S.A. about ten minutes to showtime, but somehow, we ended up right in front. I’ve never had such a good view of the bottom of the castle before!
And the moment it began – those opening chords, that first batch of laser lights – I started crying. It got me, after more than a year since the last time I saw it, after more than a year of dreams delayed.
A lot of this show’s power lies in nostalgia. We already love the characters, the songs, and the stories they’re a part of, so all it takes is to see a certain symbol on the castle or to hear a few specific notes to make us cheer.
But “Happily Ever After” isn’t just a celebration of these specific stories. It’s a celebration of the power of storytelling, period. It’s about the power of that journey from the first dream, to the adventure, to the friends and family who love us along the way, to the adversity we face, and to the ultimate victory.
And for me, it’s about my love of storytelling. It’s about my sense of purpose I find in bringing stories to life. It’s about my connection with those amazing storytellers who made this show and whom I had the honor to learn from. It’s about my wholehearted feeling – my solid, unquestionable knowledge – that making a living as a writer is the greatest way I could live.
I cry out of love; that’s the consistent thread. And I trust that I will love the next show, too. And I have renewed trust in my dream. I don’t think I ever lost it, really, but it was harder to see for a while there. The other night, I sang along with every part of the show, and more than ever, I believed the words. “There’s magic in the air tonight, and anything can happen,” sang Tiana, and I believed her. “I will please the gods – I can go the distance,” sang Hercules, and I believed him.
Tumblr media
[Image description: Cinderella’s Castle during the Happily Ever After nighttime spectacular. Fireworks light up the night sky and several Disney characters are projected onto the castle in a stained glass design.]
Standing there between my parents, with thousands of people all around us, I found renewed trust in that vision I describe when someone asks me where I see myself in five years. I see myself standing in a crowd, watching and listening as the people around me react to a story I helped bring to life, learning from their reactions how to help make the next story even better. I’ve been there before, and I’ll get there again.
“And so, our journey comes to an end,” the narration goes, “but yours continues on.” And you know what? It really does.
Be good to yourself, be kind to each other, and I’ll be back next week with more thoughts!

IwaOi Master Fic Rec List (50+ Fics)
Hello! In celebration accumulating over 190+ bookmarks on my AO3 account featuring IwaOi and Iwaizumi coming back into the manga (and for his (almost) birthday), I decided to create a masterlist of all of my favorite fanfictions in order to keep myself organized as well as contributing to more traffic on those works! I decided to split the works up by my own self-imposed genres, such as angst, coming-of-age (or the childhood-friends-to-lovers trope that we all love which depicts how their relationship changes as they grow up and will mostly be canon-compliant), and alternate universe. With the revival of Iwaizumi in the manga, alternate universes will be broken down into adulting AU where he and Oikawa’s diverge differs from in canon and actual, legit AU where there’s basically no volleyball.
I’ll include the title, link, word count, fic summary, and my own commentary (mostly for my own personal entertainment). While the AO3 fandom has been going strong since 2014, I personally have only been reading IwaOi fics for about 3 months, so I will most likely be recommending some cult-favorites, especially since I’ve been reading my fics by sorting through the tag with the most kudos.
My absolute favorites (or the ones where I personally push onto my IRL haikyuu friends) will be denoted with ♡ in increments of 1-3 with 3 ♡ being an absolute must-read. Fics marked with a * indicate that Iwaizumi or Oikawa or both are professional athletes because that’s honestly my Favorite Trope. This is incomplete as I got distracted while re-reading a lot of these and have only gone through half of my bookmarks, but feel free to check my own page here for the rest of them! This took me about 9 days to compile (aka this was in my drafts for about 9 days) but I do hope you guys enjoy reading these and leave comments and kudos!
Adulting AU
*♡♡Thirty Years and Change (the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad)
Word count: 19k
Summary: It’s July 10th, 2024, and Oikawa Tooru is an Olympian. His smiling face airs on an NHK promo every 45 seconds. He’s captain of the national men’s volleyball team, reigning star of the professional leagues, and he hasn't spoken to Iwaizumi Hajime in two years.
Thoughts: THIS IS IT. THIS FIC IS GOD TIER. They’ve been separated but now are falling back into old habits and there’s a confession on the line? Akaashi is in here and he’s pretty funny. I reread this all the time.
*♡♡♡the courtship ritual of the hercules beetle
Word count: 66k
Summary: Tooru is pretty sure he could manage the mating habits of a mosquito. It’s the mating habits of people he can’t seem to get right.
Thoughts: Absolutely the best IwaOi fic I’ve ever read. I’ve reread this about 4x and I always pay attention to a new sentence or detail that leaves me breathless. The characterization is pretty spot on, and I have to admit that this fic made me appreciate IwaOi a little more. I’ve cried countless times too. A cult-favorite but it doesn’t have nearly as many hits as it deserves.
♡days fall away
Word count: 17k
Summary: Except now he’s back home, so close to his old haunts and to Oikawa himself, and it's—weird.
Thoughts: They’ve separated for a bit but now they’re back in the same city and learning to be around each other again. Cue teasing from the biological and Seijoh family
it's been so long (nobody knows me the way you do)
Word count: 8k
Summary: Tooru hums, only half-listening. Somewhere along the way, Hajime’s palm has settled itself over the curve of Tooru’s cheek, thumb tracing over the line of his jaw.
Thoughts: They’re living together post-college feat. snapshots from their lives before getting together and their Seijoh team! It’s really soft but it manages a humorous tone as well.
Time
Word count: 5k
Summary: When they're twenty-three, their story only begins.
Thoughts: A piecewise fic told from Oikawa’s point of view. The tone is almost chatty but it really fits the pacing of the work as you get snippets and sentences of their relationship throughout the years
♡Almost a Stranger
Word count: 16k
Summary: Iwa-chan's leaving Japan. Tooru's not sure he can forgive him, but he's not going to admit his long-held feelings, either. A trip to Miyajima complicates everything.
Thoughts: They go on vacation right before Iwaizumi leaves Oikawa for a year. Oikawa ponders their relationship.
where fireflies never die
Word count: 4k
Summary: >>Oikawa: Hey Iwa-chan >>Oikawa: Did I ruin it?
Thoughts: Oikawa is a mangaka and basically writes his best selling series based off of him and Iwaizumi. This was pretty angsty ngl with a lot of introspection and second-guessing.
In the Business of Love
Word count: 22k
Summary: Meet Oikawa Tooru: He's a best-selling shoujo manga artist, a hardcore romantic and you won't believe where he's getting his lovey dovey fodder from...Enter Iwaizumi Hajime: He's Oikawa's best friend, a realist who also happens to be a wedding magazine writer despite not believing in romance...
Thoughts: Mangaka Oikawa but this is basically a rom-com lmao
Alternate Universe
Even Heroes (have the right to dream)
Word count: 20k
Summary: Oikawa Tooru, ace reporter of the superhero beat of Asahi Shimbun, hates superheroes. Or maybe he just hasn’t met the knight one yet.
Thoughts: Superhero-hiding-his-identity-Iwaizumi and begrudging Oikawa? Sign me up. This fic spent a little more time on worldbuilding than eventual romance, but it is still absolutely unique and entertaining
The secret omega
Word count: 17k
Summary: Iwaizumi’s annoying as fuck best friend. Who absolutely, definitely, no matter what, cannot find out that Iwaizumi is an omega.
Thoughts: A/B/O dynamics where Iwa is the omega and Oikawa is the alpha. 90% plot building which is pretty nice.
Conquering the Great King
Word count: 105k
Summary: Oikawa's lips twitched into a smirk and he brought them hovering just over Iwaizumi's, "One time thing, Two time thing, what's it matter as long as it's not a Relationship thing?"
Thoughts: Malicious and flirtatious Oikawa meet immovable object Iwaizumi. They’re businessmen trying to navigate friends-with-benefits and love all at the same time. A+ sex scenes tbh.
♡Infinite Risks
Word count: 8k
Summary: “It’s my fate,” Oikawa responds slowly. He’s crying.“It’s too lonely,” Iwaizumi’s heart sounded broken. “And I’m not there with you. Not really.”
Thoughts: Edge of Tomorrow AU!!!!! Please watch Edge of Tomorrow first because it’s truly a brilliant movie that I wholly enjoyed and this fic reflects that. This also made me really sad so Beware
*♡Something Like Us
Word count: 28k
Summary: Friends since childhood, Oikawa and Iwaizumi now live together, both playing for the National Team. It's no secret that athletes who are bonded perform better. So if the two of them happen to bond...It'd be for the good of the team, right?
Thoughts: ABO dynamics (and somewhat canon-compliant) as they’re roommates, on the national team, and try to navigate being “fake” mated while harboring feelings
And All the Prince’s Men
Word count: 65k
Summary: “Father only loves that which he owns, and I am the one thing that can never truly be his.”
Thoughts: Royal bastard son Oikawa and his servant Iwaizumi. An enthralling read and universe. The romance takes a secondary seat here as it focuses more on plot and world-building.
♡long nights, no peace
Word count: 18k
Summary: It's the steady knowledge that Iwaizumi Hajime will always be someone that he can rely on, that no matter what the world throws at the two of them, they share in a piece of each other's soul.
Thoughts: Pacific Rim! AU. Otherwise known as my favorite types of AUs because they’re basically soulmates (platonic or not,, but they’re not platonic here)
♡(sing with me) A Song of Conquest and Fate
Word count: 26k
Summary: When Seijou receives a missive from Aobajousai to discuss a potential peace, its emperor Oikawa Tooru could not have foreseen the series of events that would follow.
Thoughts: Warring states/historical fantasy AU. The world building is amazing and this author has great control over her language use
Cotton Breathing
Word count: 13k
Summary:
Thoughts: Long-distance and summer only but childhood friends Iwaoi!!! A dreamy summer piece and reading it almost makes me feel like I’m in a Studio Ghibli movie because of the mood it puts me in
Similar Creatures
Word count: 53k
Summary: "What's your name?" "Whatever you want it to be."(Or, Oikawa gets directions from an attractive stranger on a street corner.)
Thoughts: Iwaizumi is an escort and Oikawa needs a fancy date
Space
Word count: 44k
Summary: Tries not to think of his rooftop garden, or the apartment he used to inhabit, or Hajime’s broken expression on the night they whispered their goodbyes before Tooru’s launch, attempting to push it all to the back of his mind behind visions of this alien world terraformed
Thoughts: Oikawa’s in outerspace. They’re separated. This left me feeling pretty empty ngl.
♡here comes your man
Word count: 8k
Summary: Iwa-chan, it reads, Have a good day today! Good luck! <3 <3 <3Suga chokes. It’s hard to imagine anyone calling the scowling and fierce Doctor Iwaizumi “Iwa-chan.” But marriage probably comes with all sorts of liberties.
Thoughts: Doctor AU where Iwaizumi and Oikawa’s relationship is pondered by Suga
In the Telling
Word count: 6k
Summary: Muggleborn Iwaizumi could not be less impressed with pureblood Oikawa Tooru.
Thoughts: Harry Potter AU where they’re in the same year and aren’t really friends but are also friends
♡♡The Loyalty of A Traitor
Word count: 76k
Summary: Iwaizumi Hajime was an undercover officer with a single objective: Infiltrate the Seijoh Syndicate of the Yakuza and tear them down from the inside out. His primary target was the boss, Oikawa Tooru. The job itself was simple enough, until Iwaizumi got in too deep and absconded not only from the mission, but from the city itself.
Thoughts: Oh fuck this was Good. Yakuza boss Oikawa???? Disgraced Iwaizumi??? Do they fall in love (again)?
and suddenly, we were traitors
Word count: 17k
Summary: "sorry, it's just... you’ve been amazingly kind to me these past few days. ...but i'm still not sure who you are.”
Thoughts: The amnesia fic this fandom needed
Trial by Fire
Word count: 78k
Summary: (lawyer!AU - in which Iwaizumi loves his objections, Oikawa is beautiful, and they have more chemistry than two opposing attorneys probably should.)
Thoughts: Hot
dear diary, i met a boy
Word count: 15k
Summary: Iwaizumi's first impression of his upstairs neighbor involves getting woken up at two in the morning to the sound of Oikawa singing along to trashy pop music. He'd thought it would get better, but it all just goes downhill from there.
Thoughts: Model Oikawa and salaryman Iwaizumi meet and try to make it work
on shipwreck shore
Word count: 8k
Summary: “I’m going to murder you in cold blood and feed you to the basilisks,” Iwaizumi says conversationally.“You can’t do that, I’m your boss,” Oikawa sings, positively sparkling. “Also we’re partners, which means,” he points at Iwaizumi and leans in, “you’re stuck with me.”
Thoughts: Detectives but they’re actually funny
♡Lockdown
Word count: 72k
Summary: Within the first few months of his stay, Oikawa gets caught up in a war between cellblocks, becomes a prime target, and must decide just how far he's willing to go to protect Iwaizumi Hajime.
Thoughts: Orange is the New Black AU!!! Im a sl*t for tatted Iwaizumi
an allegory of all the things we could’ve been
Word count: 16k
Summary: “I don’t know anything about some red string,” Iwaizumi murmurs into the cracks of Oikawa’s skin, “or even about lifetimes or fate. But no matter where you are, I’ll find you. Gods or otherwise.”
Thoughts: Reincarnation AU throughout the timelines. A good soft read that leaves you sort of empty
Angst
Timeless (We Have 30 Days)
Word count: 12k
Summary: Or AU where you're branded 50 days before you die. But Oikawa doesn't tell anyone so now there's only 30 days left.
Thoughts: Ahhhhhhhhh tears
the weight of water
Word count: 6k
Summary: “Again,” he says, the smallest tremor in his voice, and Oikawa blinks at him a moment before smiling, soft and sweet. “Iwa-chan,” he replies, and Iwaizumi closes his eyes. “Again.” “Iwa-chan.”
Thoughts: Death fic
open when
Word count: 1k
Summary: Iwaizumi knew it was coming, but it still hurt. It still hurt when he opens one letter and drowns it in the tears he cannot keep at bay.
Thoughts: It takes only 1.6k words to make me cry
Canon Compliant/Coming-Of-Age
♡♡i sing the body electric
Word count: 8k
Summary: It was never part of the plan, falling in love with his best friend, but then again, most things in Iwaizumi’s life that involve Oikawa rarely unfold the way he thinks they will.
Thoughts: A beautifully introspective piece told from Iwaizumi’s point of view. It’s wholly intimate and it toes along the lines of pining and soft angst. It’s told in snippets from their lives growing up together.
♡we can do better than that
Word count: 16k
Summary: Oikawa and Iwaizumi go on a road trip during the summer after their high school graduation. It doesn't go as expected, but maybe that's not such a bad thing after all.
Thoughts: There’s a lot of character analysis and it takes a step away from the casual banter they’re always portrayed to have and focuses on the intricacies of their relationship. The tone is almost a little more melancholy. (also they have to share a bed! trope)
♡when it starts to rain, they go inside
Word count: 33k
Summary: “Where?” starts Iwaizumi.“My parent’s old lakehouse, silly, didn’t you hear me the first time?”OR: Oikawa takes Iwaizumi to his lakehouse for two weeks, post-graduation.
Thoughts: Oh This Is It IwaOi stans. This fic really solidified my own headcanon for Oikawa (spoiler alert, OP isn’t too fond of Oikawa but she fleshes out his character and his idiosyncrasies so well that you can’t help but be drawn into all of his imperfection) and this fic respects Iwaizumi as well. It has absolutely great characterization and the fic ends on an ambiguous note.
to be first, to be best
Word count: 26k
Summary: Hajime is apparently something of a masochist, and as he stares down at the tie-dyed AREA51 T-shirt in his hands, he thinks “I’m totally in love with this asshole, aren't I?”
Thoughts: College roommates trying to navigate having feelings for each other while also dating others and not realizing that they’re jealous? A cult favorite.
♡things that change, things that stay the same
Word count: 8k
Summary: Oikawa realizes he's in love with his best friend; it sucks for a while. (But only a while.)
Thoughts: Ahh a slow burn featuring daily moments between Oikawa and Iwaizumi, and Oikawa starts to notice the little things. This was a cute read because Oikawa just comes off as wonderfully earnest. My first Iwaoi fic! And a great one because it really set the standard to how I interpreted their relationship.
it’s better than words
Word count: 3k
Summary: [ or : oikawa makes iwaizumi participate in three bonding activities for new friends, and iwaizumi just wants to know why oikawa's being so weird about this]
Thoughts: Soft pining, fluff, banter, and whispered confessions. This fic really nailed the banter of high school students really well.
♡shiver
Word count: 16k
Summary: Oikawa was always the brave one. Hajime just followed two paces behind.
Thoughts: Oikawa falls first and but Iwaizumi realizes his feelings later on! So soft, so slow burn, so much pining. We get to see their relationship through Iwaizumi’s eyes and actually read him analyze his own feelings.
♡we shine like diamonds
Word count: 26k
Summary: "You know Abe-kun from class?" they snicker, hands cupped around their mouths like they're passing along a filthy secret. "I hear his older brother is... gay."
Thoughts: Character analysis, homophobia, and coming of age makes a good and angsty iwaoi fic
terrarium
Word count: 11k
Summary: At this point, is he really happy with just staying best friends forever? Will he be writing journals and collecting rocks forever (he will, he knows, but that is aside from the point)?
Thoughts: Oikawa has a terrarium and names all of the rocks he puts in (that Iwaizumi gave him) “Iwa-chan #_”
Chasing Paper Suns
Word count: 10k
Summary: Post-high school, Oikawa makes it to the national volleyball team but Iwaizumi doesn't. The next three years become an exercise in growing up without growing apart.
Thoughts: This was pretty sad tbh. Of what it means to grow up together and then suddenly having to adjust to living without each other’s presence.
with every second that you could give
Word count: 9k
Summary: The journey of Iwaizumi and Oikawa going for gold.
Thoughts: Of growing up together, making decisions for each other, and wanting to be together
Only the jellyfish know
Word count: 6k
Summary: Their third and final year at Aoba Jousai has come to an end, and the guys decide to go to the beach the day after graduation. That day, the ocean water is salty, the watermelon is sweet, and the people are sweeter.
Thoughts: Established relationship
Smut
strange.
Word count: 1k
Summary: "god, i fucking hate you."oikawa smiles, cause he knows it's not true. he knows iwaizumi loves him, knows iwaizumi adores him. but he plays along."i hate you too,"
Thoughts: It’s hot
Say My Name
Word count: 2k
Summary: “Hey, have you ever tried saying my first name?” Iwaizumi blurts, and the thought jumps out of his subconscious only after he's posed the question.
Thoughts:
No Touching Allowed
Word count: 10k
Summary: “You’ve got one rule,” Iwaizumi winks at him.
Thoughts: ExoticDancer!Iwaizumi and stressed out/repressed businessman Oikawa also an AU.

Nameless and Friendless. “The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, etc.” - Proverbs, x, 15, Emily Mary Osborn
“Emily Mary Osborn was one of the most important artists associated with the campaign for women’s rights in the nineteenth century. The daughter of a clergyman, she was brought up in Kent and Essex until 1842 when the family moved back to London. It was here that she trained as an artist at Dickinson’s academy in Maddox Street and then at Leigh’s in Newman Street. During the 1850s Osborn established a reputation as a genre painter specialising in figurative subjects of ‘unpretending character’ – the most significant of which were pictures of modern women in pathetic situations, similar to works by Richard Redgrave and Rebecca Solomon. Home Thoughts, which was painted in 1856 and exhibited at the Royal Academy that same year, was followed by her most famous work Nameless and Friendless in 1857. A full-scale, squared-up preparatory design for the latter exists in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and a smaller version in oil in York Art Gallery.Nameless and Friendless focuses on the predicament of the single woman in the modern metropolis by offering a female version of the traditional ‘Choice of Hercules’ theme. The picture shows an orphaned female artist (as suggested by her black dress), accompanied by a boy, presumably her brother, diffidently offering one of her paintings to a dealer whose disdainful expression suggests rejection. An assistant looks down cursorily at her canvas from his position on a ladder, while the woman is eyed up from behind by two rakish men otherwise engaged in examining a hand-coloured print of a ballerina – the bare legs of whom suggest other choices facing the impoverished and desperate young woman. Isolated in the centre of the composition between leering and contemptuous glances, the woman’s vulnerability is accentuated by her downward gaze and fingers nervously pulling a hoop of string. The mud-splattered crepe of her skirt, her dripping umbrella and protective cape hint at the distance she has travelled and the conditions she has endured to brave the encounter. The title of the painting and the quotation from Proverbs that accompanied the work when it was first shown at the Royal Academy in 1857 accentuate the idea of the city as a man’s domain within which women occupy a precarious position. In alighting on the subject the artist may have been influenced by a passage in Mary Brunton’s novel Self-Control of 1811 which was reprinted twice during the 1850s. Determined to improve the family’s finances, Laura, the heroine of the novel, decides to sell her pictures but successive visits to London dealers all end in failure. Whatever its source, the picture clearly addresses what art historian Deborah Cherry has defined as ‘the sexualised encounters and economies of the modern city, its spaces of pleasure, exchange and consumption’ (Cherry 2000, p.28). By including in close proximity three different models of femininity – the ballet dancer, the comfortable bourgeois matron confidently leaving the shop with her son, and the respectable but indigent protagonist in the foreground – the artist highlights three distinct ways in which women of all classes inhabit the urban realm: as figures of sexual desire and consumption, as ‘invisible’ wives secure in a family unit, and as unmarried women struggling to earn a living.Nameless and Friendless was almost certainly conceived as a political statement, Osborn being closely associated with the feminist and artist Barbara Bodichon’s Langham Place circle and their campaign for women’s rights. She was also a member of the Society of Female Artists established in 1857 (the year the picture was first exhibited) to help overcome the difficulties experienced by female artists in exhibiting and selling their work. In 1859 Osborn was one of the signatories of the women’s petition to the Royal Academy of Arts to open its schools to female students, and in 1889 to the Declaration in Favour of Woman’s Suffrage. In 1885 Osborn’s large portrait of Bodichon was presented to Girton, the first Cambridge residential college to admit women.Despite the artist’s feminist sympathies, it would be misleading to equate her own career as a single female artist with the predicament of the woman in the picture. As a student Osborn had been encouraged by her family and was later able to finance her own studio through the sale of a group portrait. She had the support of wealthy female patrons including Queen Victoria who purchased Osborn’s My Cottage Door and The Governess. Nameless and Friendless sold for the substantial sum of £250 to Lady Chetwynd, following whose death it was lent by her husband to the 1862 International Exhibition in London. That year it was reproduced as a wood engraving by Edward Skill and published as a full-page print in the Illustrated London News. Another engraving of the work by J. Cooper was published in the Art Journal in 1864 where it accompanied a feature on the artist by James Dafforne (see Dafforne 1864, pp.261–3). Osborn went on to enjoy a long and successful career, her last recorded exhibit being in 1905.“

The Punisher (1989): Unrated Cut
youtube
Tumblr media
This has been one I have been meaning to be covering for a few years now. Longtime readers here may remember my friend Matt I reference semi-occasionally when I review one of his gag gift movies here. Every now and then though he will legit surprise with me with an awesome movie gift as with today’s example. Matt knows I am a huge fan of the comic book character, The Punisher, and that all three of the live action Punisher movies are guilty pleasures of mine. Up until a few years ago I already owned both the Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson Punisher films on BluRay, but the original 1989 Punisher movie I only owned a bare bones DVD release that I thought was the only home video version of that film. Matt surprised me a few years back by tracking down an international release of an unrated director’s cut of The Punisher on BluRay. Turns out in North America, right on the precipice of the film’s released it got traded studios as its original studio was in the process of being acquired. Turns out the new studio was not confident in the drawing power of Dolph Lungdren anymore so the 1989 Punisher film was among the first wave of movies to hit the straight-to-video market. Internationally, The Punisher received theatrical releases, and performed well, which is why it landed an international BluRay release. Thank goodness my BluRay player recognizes international regions, but my only nitpick with it is the lack of subtitles. So this version of the film on BluRay is the ‘Unrated Cut’ which is how the director, Mark Goldblatt, originally envisioned the film. The 80s were the era of the gratuitously violent action blockbusters with the likes of Rambo, Robocop, Commando, Terminator and countless others dominating the box office. The Punisher was shot for that demographic, and Goldblatt stated in the commentary how he had to take the film to the MPAA nine times before toning down the movie enough to earn an ‘R’ rating.
Tumblr media
The film wastes no time with a lengthy origin story as it kicks off with a gang leader being acquitted of all charges for murdering Frank Castle (Dolph Lungdren) and his family five years prior. A news reporter recommends the gang to be on the lookout for ‘The Punisher’ vigilante, which the gang laughs off the journalist’s warnings, only for the gang to instantly meet their demise mere minutes after arriving home from court. The Yakuza arrive in town to capitalize on The Punisher’s fallout, with Yakuza leader Lady Tanaka (Kim Miyori) forcing replacement gang leader Dino Moretti (Bryan Marshall) to partner up with her after kidnapping the children of Moretti and his allies. Trying to keep tabs on this whole mess of a situation is the ‘Punisher Task Force’ consisting of Frank Castle’s former partner, Jake Berkowitz (Louis Gossett Jr.), and fellow detective Sam Leary (Nancy Everhard). Following all this setup, The Punisher is essentially 1980s action film 101, with Castle tearing it up against the Yakuza in a couple of entertaining shootouts in a casino and later on in a funhouse, complete with Yakuza members firing away at Frank while breezing down a curvy slide. Completing the over-the-top 80s action formula is the cheesy one-liners, with my favorite featuring Berkowitz grilling Frank on his vigilante warfare, “What do you call 125 murders in five years?” to which Castle dryly retorts, “Work-in-Progress.” Eventually everything comes to a head when Punisher and Moretti team up to rescue Moretti’s kid in the Yakuza stronghold, where the most intense fighting sequences emanate from in the entire film. The unrated cut pulls no punches, with the most gruesome fatalities transpiring as Castle and Moretti work their way to the final confrontation with Lada Tanaka.
Tumblr media
When I re-watched the film with audio commentary from Mark Goldblatt he made sure to pinpoint which parts he added back in as he originally envisioned for this unrated version, and how he stands behind this version being the definitive cut of the film. Other interesting tidbits from the commentary was how the film wound up being shot in Australia, regrets of not having the Punisher’s trademark skull icon on his shirt in the film and informing in-depth on the film trading studios and going direct-to-video in America. Goldblatt also mentions in the commentary how there is a workprint cut of the film, which he stated he does not stand behind since it was cut before the core movie finished filming. Said workprint cut is included as a bonus feature, and is actually eight minutes longer than the unrated cut. The main takeaway I had with the workprint cut is it has a whole new 17 minute opening on the origin of The Punisher that happens five years earlier where it shows Castle and Berkowitz making a bust on a routine stakeout that clues the gangsters in to Frank’s family location where they ultimately make a hit on Frank’s family. That whole 17 minutes is briefly alluded to in the unrated cut in the form of a five second flashback of the family’s demise. This prologue adds a whole new dynamic to the film, but I can see why Goldblatt wanted it cut since it brings a snappier pace to the overall film. Also worth mentioning is that the workprint is presented in its original adapted 35mm form, and how the editors did a commendable job cleaning it up for the HD version on the BluRay.

Other extra features is a 21 minute interview with Mark Goldblatt. If you do not have time to invest into the commentary track, then this interview is a recommended alternative as it hits most of the same beats and goes into Mark’s other Hollywood successes. Also included is a quick five minute interview with Dolph Lungdren where he has fond memories working with the stuntmen in the fight sequences and wishes the movie would have had a theatrical run in America. For those who are fans of reverse box art, I recommend taking advantage of that here, as this BluRay’s alternative artwork is pretty remarkable. Rounding off the BluRay is a gag reel…..which would not load on my BluRay player, so that will have to be my loss. The Punisher: Unrated Cut BluRay was a surprise hit gift from Matt! I will stand behind Goldblatt by safely assuring his unrated cut here is the must-see version of the film. A solid slate of extra features only helps makes this BluRay the definitive home video edition of this movie. If you dig the over-the-top action films of the 80s, then odds are this 1989 take on The Punisher will be right up your alley. Now the shoe's on the other foot.
Once best-known for his iconic role as TV’s Hercules, in recent years Kevin Sorbo has forged a new identity as one of the few openly conservative actors working in Hollywood.
And if the trailer for his latest film, “The Reliant,” is any indication, Sorbo is embracing his role as a pro-faith, pro-America foil to typically liberal celebrities.
Tumblr media
According to the A.V. Club, the film is based on a 2017 novel by the same name.
“When the dollar collapses, widespread rioting and looting threaten the peace of a family in Zanesville, Ohio. Eight children tragically lose their parents in the chaos,” reads a description of the book on Amazon. “The oldest, 19-year-old lovesick Sophie, is forced to care for her defenseless and hungry siblings in a stretch of woods surrounded by lawless anarchy.”
According to the trailer, in the alternate version of America depicted by the film, guns have been outlawed. The trailer also shows characters arming themselves with guns, dodging antifa-like mobs and fending off rioters.
One Twitter user described the movie as “Red Dawn but with Antifa.”
Tumblr media
“After guns have been outlawed, Kevin Sorbo and his family fight their way through Black Bloc snipers, socialists on dirtbikes, and run over protestors in the streets,” quipped the Twitter account for the leftist Minion Death Cult Podcast.
The liberal reaction to Kevin Sorbo and his latest flick
In a Hollywood studio system dominated by progressive viewpoints, a movie that presents a right-leaning perspective can seem like a novelty.
Such was the tenor of the response from many liberal commenters on social media, who reacted to “The Reliant” by mocking the film for its arguably alarmist presentation of conservative bogeymen.
Tumblr media
“Gosh. Sometimes USA culture is so weird for me that until the end I was not sure it was an internet parody or a true movie trailer,” tweeted French graphic designer Fred Boot.
“like 90% of this movies profits will be leftists eating handfuls of edibles and seeing it three times a day,” predicted one Twitter user.

Well what did you think they were going to do?

Could Disney please just make something original? I’m begging, please stop with the live action remakes.
The Lady and the Tramp remake? Unnecessary. Oh, yeah, cute dogs, but like...? Why not make an original live action film with cute dogs? Why do all the live action Disney films have to be remakes of animated classics that were already perfect?
There’s also TWO Snow White remakes, a 101 Dalmatians remake (again), a Peter Pan remake, a Lilo and Stitch remake, Pinocchio remake, Little Mermaid remake, the Hunchback of Notre Dame remake, a Tinkerbell live action movie, Hercules remake, Black Cauldron remake, Atlantis remake, Treasure Planet remake, Pocahontas remake, a Prince Charming spin off movie, a Mulan remake, AND a Sword in the Stone remake lined up too. Plus the Maleficent and Jungle Book sequels. Then take into account that in the last few years (I’m starting from 2010) we’ve already had live action adaptations of Maleficent, The Jungle Book, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pete’s Dragon, Lady and the Tramp, two Alice in Wonderland movies, Christopher Robin and Dumbo. THAT IS 31 LIVE ACTION FILMS. 31 LIVE ACTION REMAKES/SEQUELS TO REMAKES.
Now don’t get me wrong, some of them are alright. Some of them at least TRY to be a little different, to put a different POV on the story, or to pay homage whilst also being its own movie (eg. Christopher Robin acts as a sequel to Winnie the Pooh instead of outright live action remake, Maleficent puts a different spin onto Sleeping Beauty instead of outright copying, Alice in Wonderland (2010) serves more as a sequel-tribute to the original etc).
But most of these movies don’t need to be remade because they’re perfect the way they are, and they won’t work in live action as well as they do in animation. Lilo and Stitch is going to look fucking terrifying in live action - please tell me how a live action film will portray Stitch? A blue alien that somehow manages to be dangerous AND cute/fluffy. Just what the hell will he look like?!
The only ones that I think truly need remakes are the ones that failed the first time around, and the only ones that seem to qualify for that (as far as I know) are The Black Cauldron (which everyone tends to forget exists), Atlantis and Treasure Planet. These are films/stories that truthfully could do with a reattempt because they tend to get brushed under the rug or forgotten.
Another gripe of mine is specifically about Peter Pan. Peter Pan is based on a book by J.M. Barrie, and for me I have always loved that whenever I’ve gone to see Peter Pan at the panto or whenever Peter Pan has been involved in anything, Great Ormond Street Hospital has gotten the royalties/money. Barrie specifically wanted all money made from Pan after his death to go to that hospital because it’s specifically for sick children. I’m pretty sure that’s why a lot of people like to imagine Peter Pan guiding sick children to heaven, but that could just be me. Anyway, do you guys seriously think Disney give two fucks about Great Ormond Street? Do you think they want to give ANY money made from a Peter Pan film to them? I’m not sure what the laws on copyright are regarding how long after Barrie’s death it extends to, but it’s just common human decency to not take money away from a damn children’s hospital. Even if the copyright has expired, many productions of Peter Pan continue to donate to GOSH anyway because of Barrie’s wishes, and because they know that Peter Pan is important to the hospital. But Disney is definitely that corporate greedy asshole that would do that, of course, because Disney don’t care about children’s hospital - they only care about money.
Honestly, it’s just my opinion, but Disney hasn’t released an actual classic good original film in years. For me, Zootopia/Zootropolis was the last one (don’t mention Moana to me, it’s cool if you like it but idk I kinda personally thought it wasn’t the same standard but I can admit that representation is important and I’m happy that there’s some diversity). This isn’t including Pixar, but even Pixar has seemed to not produce as great films lately, and of their good ones...it’s mostly been sequels.
Not to be biased but at least DreamWorks is putting original stuff out there nowadays. I mean yeah, it’s done sequels - HTTYD2 and 3, the Shrek movies etc - and its done some questionable original films - Turbo, Shark Tale - but at least it’s trying to be original. Their next animated film is original (it’s called “Abominable”) and looks pretty good so far. And the sequels DreamWorks produce are usually BETTER or on par with their originals; Shrek 2? Arguably better than the first. The second and third Dragon movies? On par with the first and form an overall beautiful story. The Madagascar films actually got better and better as they went.
At least DreamWorks isn’t remaking their old classics for cash grabs. DreamWorks may not have the same standing as Disney (at the moment) because Disney has that name power/history behind it, but it’s arguably better in many ways. Sure, they care about making money - what studio doesn’t? - but at least there’s films where you can see the love and effort and care put into them.
Also the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy is ten times better than Toy Story 4, Frozen and any of Disney’s recent films, just saying
