I’d just moved to New York from Canada, so maybe I wasn’t quite used to hearing people referring to soft drinks as “soda”. (Most of my Canadian friends called it “pop”) Or who knows! Maybe this person ripped their shirt and actually was expecting to find a public use sewing machine somewhere in the dorm! I’ll never know for sure.

Ashton’s first Homecoming (aka HOCO) dance! While he might have been fine skipping it, he didn’t take much convincing to go. I’m glad I managed to snap a photo with him beforehand and another one after dropping him off. #freshmanyear

Do You Need To Join A Sorority In College To Make Friends?
NO! While joining a sorority is a great way to meet people it is not the only way to make friends in college. Joining a sorority at an SEC school like the University Of South Carolina introduces you to hundreds of potential friends but is not a guarantee. I tried joining one my freshman year and while I have made friends through the program, my closest companions were made through common interests like my major and work. I met my best friend at school, while I was not at school. In the spring of my freshman year, I worked The Players golf tournament at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. I met another USC student there by chance and she is now my best friend while at the university. If you are nervous about making friends I would still recommend joining a sorority because it opens so many opportunities to meet people, but it is not the end of the world if you don't. Other great ways to meet people in school include your classes, other clubs you join, community service, and meeting friends of your friends. The best advice I could offer is to become as involved as possible and try to say yes to as many opportunities because you never know which ones will lead to even greater ones or meeting new amazing people. #greeklife #freshmanyear #getinvolved

Well, we did it. We moved Jake into his dorm, and he’s settling into college life at @sdsu. He’s so ready for this new chapter, and I’m so excited for him. Hi all! * Sorry it’s been so long! I’ve been sooooo busy with the first month of college! But hey! I’ve made it so far! * On another note; my creative writing class requires twenty pages of writing by the end of the semester. We just finished up the nonfiction unit - which is my least favorite type of writing to write(I know. Sue me.) - but I chronically write waaay too much and have turned in over fourty pages for this unit alone. We just started poetry today (which I ACTUALLY LIKE) and I’m sitting down to do my homework. If my teacher isn’t scared of me by this point he should be now!!! * * * #writersofinstagram #writerscommunity #writer #writing #writingcommunity #overwriter #overwriting #nonfiction #nonfictionwriting #poetry #poetrycommunity #collage #freshmanyear #stress #burnout #columbiacollegechicago https://www.instagram.com/p/CUvh8RErlT6/?utm_medium=tumblr

I’m going to ease into this whole blog thing by using this first post to give advice. For the first couple years of college/university, get into a routine. Forcing yourself into a routine and managing your time will provide numerous rewards later on, in terms of mental health, GPA, and socialization. For example, my freshman year I would wake up at 6am, be on campus by 8:15, and go to class from around 9:30 to 4, depending on the day. I would take time on mornings I started later to practice my viola (an activity that’s always helped me relax) or go to the gym on campus and work out. I would typically not leave campus until 9pm, allowing me to do homework in the library. I did better my freshman year on this strict regimen than I have done any other year so far.
Therefore, I would recommend to any struggling student anywhere to stick to a strict schedule early on. Wake up early and go to sleep early. And figure out early on how you learn best and make frequent visits to the tutoring center. It may seem at first like it’s the end of the world that you can’t hang out with your friends all the time, but trust me, your mental health will thank you.

so my college is actually one of the many now cancelling class in the us. like many i’m shocked, scared, and nervous for the future.
i was saving this picture for a special occasion, but this feels appropriate. this is my favorite study space on my campus (can you tell why? 🌿). now i have to leave my campus for the rest semester.
fortunately i have a support system and family to go home to and the means to get there but many people don’t. the situation we are in is truly tragic. i wish I could help. i wish i could stop this virus that is hurting so many people. even though my freshman year of college will be tainted by this memory, there are people sick and dying.
please stay safe everyone. practice good hygiene. i hope we see improvements in our situation soon. this is truly tragic and very real now.
i apologize in advance for any irregularities in my posting times. this is an incredibly difficult time. i will try to continue at home with my online classes. please stay safe everyone.

This is gonna be a long one so bear with me..
Things have been filled with very high highs and low lows these past few weeks.
I’ve figured out what my academic passion is, and what I want to pursue going forward. I’ve never been more certain of my straight up LOVE for something and interest and desire to learn everything about something. I’m going to switch my major to Applied Psychology and double minor in Womens & Gender studies and Global Public Health to hopefully go on to get my PhD in Clinical Psych - focusing on how mental health issues specifically effect women. I’m writing a paper for one of my classes right now about how to break the stereotype of how people can only have an eating disorder if they are a thin, white, affluent female (because that is some bull shit) and its getting me so fired up. I read an article for one of my other classes about how poverty and homelessness puts women at an increased risk of experiencing domestic violence and that got me fired up too. I have passions! I was just never given the opportunity to explore them.
I’ve been renewing my relationship with Jesus. This girl that I’ve been hanging out with a lot brought me to a bible study group and it made me feel very peaceful, so I’ve been praying, and I ordered a devotional bible. It’s incredible that when you do pray for a sign, God will bring you one.
On that note, friendships have been hard here. But I am keeping in mind that people say freshman year of college is hard, especially first semester, and pushing through. I had this ideal of being SO happy when I got here and that just isn’t realistic. I have met some cool people, not having a “group” yet doesn’t say anything about me - we haven’t even been here for 2 months yet. chill ava. chill

I’m starting highschool (!)
The title says it all! I’m starting freshman year (9th grade) on August 14th. I’m going to be going to a public high school. In my city, two middle schools (grades 6-8) merge together and form the high school that I’m going to. I went to one of these middle schools so I know half of my class/year (the class of 2023). This is a pretty good thing because I’ll know about half of the kids in my classes. In this post, I’ll be discussing a few things that I’m worried about, things that I’m excited about, and some goals I want to accomplish. I’m also very open to advice for everything possible (highschool in general, freshman year, prepping for PSAT, SAT, clubs, anything!).
What I’m worried about:
I'll be taking the most amount of coursework possible for my year. The classes that I’m taking (in the order I have them) are Spanish II, Honors Biology, Adv Int II (math), Honors English, Honors World History, Mandarin I, and PE 9. That’s 4 honors and 2 languages. I know this isn’t the most work possible and I know some of y’all are taking 9 million AP classes or something, but I can’t help but feel a bit nervous for this all. I know I can most likely handle it all with very good organization and good time management, but it’s still a lot to handle.
I’m worried about not having enough time to pursue things that I enjoy doing. With homework, clubs, and karate, I’m really not sure how I’m going to find time to do other things I enjoy like photography, advocating for feminism, politics, and future things. Does anyone have advice for this?
What I’m excited about:
I’m excited for a new chapter in my education. I’m a nerd (Woah, new information) and I can’t wait to learn all so many new things and study all of the interesting subjects that I’ll be taking classes in. I’m also excited for all of this because it’s a good opportunity to learn how to be a better learner and how to work more efficiently to get better grades and learn things quicker than I do at the moment.
I’m also very excited about clubs! I’ll for sure be in NAMI club (mental health) and in debate club. I’m most likely going to be getting a leadership position NAMI club as I led a smaller version of it in middle school. I’ll be very involved in debate as it is something I am very passionate about and hope to be even more involved in.
Lastly, I’m very excited to meet new people (both new people in my grade and new upperclassmen). I want to make more and more new friends and have more connections in high school. I’ve been told from some older friends that this will happen naturally and I’m very happy about it!
What my goals are:
I obviously want straight A’s this year. I always want straight A’s every year but this year is sort of different. I’m usually very hard on myself for not getting A’s but this year I’m looking at it differently. If I don’t get an A, it’s not the end of the world. It’s a chance to learn something new and make sure I get a better grade on the next test, assignment, project, etc. I also want to learn how to balance things and efficiently work on homework. Overall, I just want to learn how to fix/work with things I said I was worried about.
That’s all, sorry for the long rant lol. Like I said, I’m very open to all advice from you smart hoomans who have been through this process. Thank you and wishing you all the best school year possible!
