The one thing I've been craving is fresh cranberry-orange relish, which is sour enough to help with morning sickness but also delicious and healthy and a great change from the straight carbs that are what I mostly want when I'm nauseous. So I was quite devastated to discover yesterday that all of my local grocery stores are sold out of cranberries for the year (devastated in the sense that I juuuuust managed to make it to the car before starting about twenty minutes of hormone-fueled sobbing. Over cranberries. I feel so bad for the poor Sprouts employee who had to tell me they were out.).
Anyway, I posted in my local Buy Nothing group on Facebook asking if by any chance anyone had a leftover bag of cranberries from the holidays. Not only did I get a tip for which grocery store DOES still have a few bags (well, did. They, uh, might be out now), but I was also offered a full dozen bags of cranberries from people's fridges and freezers. So now I'm crying a bit, again, because it was just so kind of so many strangers to reach out and offer the food they'd stashed against the upcoming cranberry famine, and maybe a little bit because hormones, but mostly because sometimes people are pretty great.

I’m going to miss this advert after the holidays. It’s a good ad. Fun design, I’ve mentioned this before. I like cranberries. I like berries in general. I forgot to look for some fresh. I should look tomorrow. It’s been far too long, it’s time to make fresh cranberry relish.

Anna walks into the living room, sporting two mugs of warm cranberry cider and a plate of fresh buns stuffed with savory potatoes and onions to share between them.
"Hey, love," She chirps, pressing a kiss against his cheek as she sits down. "How are those wings of yours doing? Are they still giving you trouble?"
// @dragonskxn
Butch notices her placing the platter and the mugs down before looking up from where he sits on the couch from the guitar in his lap. He relishes the feel of those lips against his cheek as she seats herself next to him, and he takes to setting his instrument aside.
“Hey there, Sweetness,” He greets back with a warm smile that only becomes warmer when she asks about that. He hates the topic but it wasn’t like she hadn’t already seen the state of them. Rather than embracing them, he’s been taking to hiding them, expending his own energy to do so much like he was capable of with his tail.
“Ah, every now an’ again… they’re still a lil’ sore but nothin’ like they were that week.” He shudders at the thought. “Can’t sleep on my back like I used ta, heh! But I ain’t looked at ‘em in a good bit, they, uh…” his smile falls slowly and he picks up one of those mugs, taking himself a sip before too much spills out of him at once.
“…Thanks fer th’ snack, darlin, y’didn’t have t’ do all this~”

CHEF ILONA: Festive Whipped Feta Dip w/ Cranberry Chutney
Tumblr media
Creating a festive and delicious spread that will guarantee an experience that is merry and bright for your guests can be low-stress and even fun by curating a graze comprised of a selection of versatile dips. My dips can be used as a flavour foundation for a canape, a crunchy lettuce wrap, or in its natural state as a dip.
Tumblr media
How to serve whipped feta dip: Top my whipped feta dip with homemade cranberry chutney, toasted pistachio, and honey for the ultimate sweet-salty combination. You can get creative here. The toasted pistachios add an incredible crunch to your dip but leave them off if you’re not a fan. Don’t feel like turning on the stove? Top this dip with our cranberry relish instead or jam you made in the summertime.
Tumblr media
Feta’s salt and tang make it a versatile cheese that can both contrast and enhance other flavors.
For the best pairings:
Balance its saltiness with sweet fruits, mild grains, and fresh greens. Complement its acidity with earthy, robust flavors like nuts, olives, and roasted vegetables. Enhance its Mediterranean character with herbs, olive oil, and spices like oregano and dill. These pairings allow feta’s unique qualities to elevate both simple and complex dishes, adding brightness, richness, and a delightful contrast in texture and flavor.
Tumblr media
Whipped Feta Dip
Cranberry Topping:
Juice and zest of 1 orange
3 Tbsp. honey
1 ½ cups fresh or frozen cranberries
1 sprig thyme, plus 2 tsp. chopped fresh thyme leaves
In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk orange juice and honey until combined and bring to a boil.
Add cranberries and thyme sprig and return to a boil.
Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally just until cranberries burst and
become saucy; approximately 7 to 8 minutes.
Remove the thyme sprig, and then stir in orange zest and chopped thyme leaves.
Whipped Feta:
6 oz. feta in brine, cut into small cubes and drained
1 clove garlic, grated or minced
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes (my preference is Aleppo pepper flakes or gochugaru)
1 cup cream cheese, room temperature
3 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
In a food processor, pulse feta, garlic, red pepper flakes, and chopped thyme until feta is broken up into small crumbs.
Add cream cheese and pulse until combined.
With the food processor running, drizzle in oil and blend until mixture is smooth and fluffy.
Transfer dip to a serving dish and top with cranberry topping.
Garnish options: Toasted chopped pistachios, chopped parsley, additional orange zest, additional drizzle of honey, walnuts, and fresh thyme.

Long 'Weekend'
It was a helluva weekend, starting on Friday. My aunt was coming to visit and my daughter was coming home for a small fall break from school. Preparedness was key! I needed extra meal planning, extra cleaning, and plans for farm-related activities for my aunt. Also my son ended up with a hellacious amount of school work due today, so. Yuk.
All went well. K, Aunt L, and I made sweet pickle relish with green tomatoes and peppers, worked in the garden (a LOT), made apple-cranberry conserve, dilly-beans, and had a lengthy drive to admire the fall colors.
Tumblr media
(The dilly beans would look prettier with sprigs of fresh dill, but the dried stuff will have to do.)
We removed all the peppers from the plants, picked the last few beans, dug a few potatoes, brought in the beets (not many) and removed the old corn stalks. It was all very productive . . but so tiring. K also made time to take Hero out for several rides; October is the BEST month to ride horses.
Her school break is over, and she drove back to campus right after dinner. Hopefully the rest of the semester will be good for both kids and I can complete the garden cleanup before Nov 1.
I would like to stay in bed all day tomorrow.

OK, chopping things: For Thanksgiving I'm making enough for each team of my grandma's famous cranberry relish. I've got my frozen pineapple, canned pineapple, sweet apples, sour apples, middling apples, apricot jelly, seedless raspberry jam, sweet marmalade, oranges, and... oh right! fresh raspberries. (pause) ....oh, and the cranberries, yeah.
OK, thoughtfully: ......If anyone wants to accuse you of actually putting cranberries in this stuff, they'll need full color video evidence.

It's officially NOT the holiday season. Why does life speed up in those 12 weeks between Halloween and Christmas? I just want to soak it all in; the shopping for the perfect turkey, the aroma of the fresh sage and rosemary for the stuffing, the tiny little pops the cranberries make as they burst and simmer away in a bath of brown sugar and orange zest. And, pumpkin. Pumpkin everything. Boom and Zoom it's Christmastime and the lights are up as fast as they are taken down, in a wintry brush of peppermint kisses and glad tidings of joy... then it's gone with a countdown, a ball drop, and a kiss. And, here we are. This holiday season plagued us personally with some misfortune, as my eldest daughter  fractured her ankle at a trampoline park, which resulted in a weeks worth of doctors appointments, two urgent care centers and a lovely 8 hour field trip to the ER. But, nonetheless we are thankful things are not worse. My sweet mama is still under hospice care, but thriving if that even makes sense? She's home with her dog and 24 hour care, and she just seems content with things as they are.( It's been that way since April.) I make all her dinners, and one day, I'm going to show y'all all the "secret" recipes that she is thriving on. Stuffed salmon, shrimp scampi, sea bass, lamb chops, filet mignon,, sea scallops, herb crusted tilapia, and lots of fresh berries, and orange juice. Ohhhh man she drinks a lot of that, but she is a Florida native, so it's in the genes. Vitamin C and D run in our bloodlines. And, the four adopted littles? There is NOTHING like having a houseful of young kids at Christmas. I know all too well that these years will be gone in a blink of a twinkling  eye. Until then, I will cherish and relish these ever so tiring days. PS: Checking in for accountability on my #onehappy project. Today: I made homemade butter mochi for the family. (unfortunately nobody liked it but me, but at least I tried)   Read the full article

I love all of it, whether can-shaped jelled, or finely chopped fresh berries. We get craisins and juice for the whole year, but this season brings cranberries in their whole fruit form.
As a kid, I held the bowl while my mom turned the crank of the old cast-iron kitchen grinder with one hand, and put whole fresh cranberries and orange sections (skin & all) into the top. Sometimes the juice escaped and puddled on the kitchen floor. Then we'd add some sugar, maybe some spices, and chill in the fridge until it was cold enough to put in the fancy glass bowl (shaped like leaves & berries) with the filigree silver spoon for Thanksgiving and/or xmas dinner. I haven't looked recently, but I think this was the cranberry relish recipe that was on the back of a package of fresh cranberries.
But I love that Canberry dish above!
And @aprillikesthings - your tags! 😆🤣😂
