NYC's wolfacejoeyy Achieves Heartthrob Status with Romantic 'Valentino' Mixtape
Tumblr media
wolfacejoeyy absorbs his myriad influences and filters them through his experience as an artist and college student in New York City. An amalgamation of many of the most innovative styles percolating on the East Coast, injected with a dose of the 21-year-old's impish charm, joeyy shares Valentino, his debut full-length.
Spanning 13 songs, seamlessly transitioning from one to the next, Valentino is a glistening companion for late night flings, morning-after hangovers, and everything in between. Leaning into his loverboy persona–the album title is inspired by the legendary romantic lead, not the high fashion brand–Valentino refines joeyy's euphoric sound, which combines the insistent propulsion of Jersey club with the witty sleaze and sparkling samples of sexy drill, adding a dose of sweet R&B melodies and seductive storytelling that sets the project apart from his previous work.
Crafted by wolfacejoeyy along with a core group of producers that includes PoWR Trav, SoundByNova, Matt Nadler, and most crucially, WhereIs22, aka the actor Michael Rainey Jr. (Power, Power Book II: Ghost), Valentino is sonically rich and compulsively listenable, flowing from style to style with ease. At the center of it all is Joeyy, expertly hosting the proceedings with an sly smile on his face. Single "double tap" employs MCVERTT to bring his futuristic synths, ear-catching sound effects, and irresistible percussion, as joeyy carves through the crowded club-like atmosphere with laster-like precision. "Talk Less" finds joeyy harmonizing with Reuben Aziz over a shiny instrumental that would have found a home at urban radio during the Neptunes-dominated heyday of the early 2000s. Recently shared as a freestyle on On The Radar, "Alexis Texas" transforms the synth solo from Tyler, The Creator & Frank Ocean's "She" into a sexy drill anthem, as wolfacejoeyy literally howls like a wolf in the ad-libs.
Valentino is home to the buzzing single "cake," which went viral on TikTok, along with acclaimed singles like the heartfelt "don't be dishonest," and "I Know," produced by WhereIs22. "cake" has quickly become a fan-favorite, generating over 160K combined views across social platforms before its official release, earning co-signs from stars like Sexyy Red, Rubi Rose, Veeze, and Kaliii on social media. The song, and it's line "Ok, for sure/I tell her she's sexy, she said 'period, purr'," has inspired more than 47.8k video creations on TikTok. The flirty music video for "cake" recently surpassed 2.6 million views on YouTube, becoming joeyy's most-viewed video to date. Featuring additional production from Synthetic and many others, Valentino is available now on all platforms.
With his new music, joeyy is aiming to improve upon his breakout 2023, in which he partnered with Whereis22, on the acclaimed EP 22Joeyy. The album featured the single “weekend” ft. Cash Cobain & Chow Lee, acclaimed by Pitchfork, and additional guest spots from SoFaygo and B-Lovee. Joeyy discussed the project in an interview with BET, and a profile in HYPEBEAST that came out earlier this year, and his fiery 2023 inspired Complex to place him on their list of Rappers to Watch in 2024. After the success of 22Joeyy, joey kept the train rolling, opening for Eem Triplin on tour, throwing a headlining show earlier this year at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn, and delivering a standout performance at Rolling Loud California 2024. With over 1 million streams per week on his catalog, joeyy rolls into Spring 2024 with a head of steam.
With Valentino, joeyy establishes himself as the rap game's romantic lead. Stay tuned for the music video for "Solar," a highlight from the project, dropping soon on joeyy's YouTube.

masters of none - part 4 (jason todd x reader)
summary: after many months, we are back in action and back in reader’s head. pls enjoy these jason crumbs. if you need a refresher on the plot, the other chapters will be linked below!
word count: 3.7k
warnings: food/eating. alcohol. cursing.
part 1 /// part 2 //// part 3
gravity
ever since i ever felt ya, right there life couldn't seem better. tulip flowers in my sweater. ask me now, is this forever?
you rested your chin on the table before you, your arms hanging limply between your knees as you listened to your manager, dana. you were really just watching her mouth open and close while she pointed at a powerpoint. god, what you would've given for an extra hour of sleep. the all nighters in the studio were starting to take a toll.
the feeling of the back of daisy’s soft hands brought you back to earth. the smell of cocoa butter dancing beneath your nostrils as her smooth engagement ring rolled across your cheek. you breathed in her smell, exhaling in content through your nose.
“you good?” she mouthed and you closed your eyes, giving her a little nod. the bassist rubbed her calloused fingers against your forehead, pushing strands of your hair past your hairline. you pouted when she eventually pulled away, leaving you only with the sensation of touch that once was.
you heard tyler shift in his seat and then felt some air graze against your hand. you looked under the table, noticing he was holding something out to you. you two made eye contact briefly before you scooted back in, grabbing what felt like an envelope. looking down at your lap, you saw a sticky note attached to it. jason’s money was what it said. you carefully put the envelope in your jacket pocket, sitting back in your seat now and looking at dana’s powerpoint. she was going over reports from your publicist, jerry, which you didn't particularly care about.
“now, i have to ask,” dana’s words pierced your bubble of inattention. “have you all thought about what i said about this next album?”
jordy raised his hand like a school kid. “yes?”
“y/n and i decided that we'd be okay with making our album a group project. it has been, admittedly, kinda hard and boring without everyone else. we’d honestly be doing ourselves a disservice by not doing it together,” jordy explained, dana clapping her hands together.
“wonderful,” she nodded, keeping her hands clasped. “i know you two were excited to do your own thing, but i was talking to jerry and he was really pressing me to get a group album from you guys. the people wanna see you guys as a unit of established artists, which you all are. so what's the concept? we never discussed it.”
“uh,” you verbally paused, raising your arms above your head to stretch. “disco, jazz, and funk. it's a mix of those.”
“retro is in right now,” dana nodded, pacing around the room. “how far back will this set us on a release date?”
you grimaced, leaning back in your seat, the back of the seat lightly bouncing as it absorbed your weight. you pondered the question for a moment. “if it’s gonna be a group thing, it'll have to be significantly longer. we have a decent starting off point but i'm gonna need way more songs now.”
“what about the rest of you? any tracks that we could swing?” dana asked, looking at the rest of the group.
grabbing a pen and piece of scrap paper, you started jotting down notes as everyone spoke out to you. dex and quinton didn’t have anything, but they wouldn’t be a problem. you just needed to give them a beat to rap over and you’d be set. the twins had a finished song already that fit the concept, which was good. with tyler’s voice and aly’s excellent song writing abilities, you doubted very seriously that anything else needed to be done to it. daisy and hector had plenty of lyricless songs, too. funk and soul was their specialty, after all. misha even had a demo track she was willing to share.
you looked over the notes you had taken, tapping your pen on the table as you hummed to yourself. “this could probably work. we’ll need to go over everything in the studio, though.”
“we should just do it now. no one is doing shit else today, right?” dex asked the group, who all shook their head.
“i have a request,” you raised your finger, looking at dana. “i want gotham to be involved in this project.”
“gotham…” dana repeated slowly, unsure of what you meant. “care to elaborate?”
“music videos directed by student directors from gotham university, commissioning local artists for album art. dancers, actors, musicians, whatever. all of them have to be from gotham. i don't want any of the money we put into this project leaving this city,” you stated firmly, dana giving you a blank look.
“i like that idea,” hector said, giving you a kind smile before turning to dana, shifting in his seat. the drummer was like a big brother, always backing you up in moments like these. “accessibility to the arts is really limited here and we should change that.”
“i’d rather give back to the city, too,” quinton agreed, playing with the gold cross hanging from his neck. “we’re one of the only groups in gotham known outside of gotham. we should use that as an opportunity to rep our city.”
“it sounds like you have your minds made up on this,” dana narrowed her eyes, letting out a sigh. “it would definitely be good PR.”
“because god forbid we do something out of the kindness of our hearts,” misha laughed, rolling her eyes. “we're trying to put the city on and you're worried about how it makes us look.”
“that's my job, misha. don't you want me to do my job?” dana retorted. “besides, i'm more concerned with the funding. you all don't have disposable income, believe it or not.”
“but i know someone who does,” she said with a singsong tone, giving you a look.
“i hope you're not referring to me,” you deadpanned. your income was far from disposable.
“i’m referring to our good friend, bruce wayne,” she explained, grabbing a business card out of her purse, handing it over to dana. “ever since i got invited to that charity gala, i've had a direct line to a representative with the wayne foundation. i say we ask them to help fund the project.”
“now that could work,” dana admitted, eyeing the card as she tapped her foot. “if we pitch for more youth involvement, it'll probably go over better. we all know how much bruce wayne loves saving the children.”
you frowned at how dana described bruce’s initiatives as a philanthropist. you were sure his motivations for favoring youth projects were good intentioned, considering his parents had been killed when he was just a little boy. you wanted to go into this good intentioned, too and you hoped that they'd agree. they being the wayne foundation and subsequently, bruce himself.
“ty and quinton could do something with forrester. if we’re going for the youth involvement route, i mean,” aly spoke up.
“forrester correctional. our old stomping grounds,” quinton sighed wistfully as he patted tyler on the shoulder. “i think that would be a good idea.”
“they use the arts as an outlet for them, so it could be beneficial for everyone,” tyler nodded. “there are a lot of good kids there. just unfortunate circumstances, that’s all.”
“wasn’t one of bruce’s son’s a troublemaker before he was adopted?” aly continued, not noticing the look you and tyler shared. “i’m sure he’d probably be interested in doing something with them if his son comes from the same background.”
“it’s settled, then. you all keep working on the music. jerry and i will handle the rest. we need this album out before hector and daisy’s wedding,” dana said, grabbing her suitcase.
hey, i have your money. did you still want it?
you stared down at the unsent message, your thumb floating over the send arrow. you hadn’t spoken to jason since that night after the race, as per his request. your mind kept wandering back to it, even as time still went on. what happened was scary, to say the least. fun, but scary. you wondered how the hell jason didn’t get the two of you killed. that part, you didn't want to think about too hard. everyone in gotham had their secrets and it was an unspoken rule amongst citizens to not pry. secrets were secrets for a reason. nothing good ever came from unearthing them.
speaking of secrets, you hadn't exactly told tyler and quinton what happened that night. not in detail. you conveniently left out the chase and stopping to get something to eat. omitting the first part was obvious, but the second one was for your own sanity. you didn't need them teasing you over nothing. besides, all that mattered was no one was dead or arrested. and for the way the three of you used to get down, that was a win.
you considered texting jason earlier this week, just to check in on him, but you decided against it. he obviously wanted you to text him and you obviously had to do the opposite. his little mind game wasn’t going to work on you. you pressed send, frowning immediately as you did so.
maybe it already had.
“it’s too many people in this bitch,” dex sighed, the cold of the water bottle you had asked him for against your hand bringing you back to reality. blinking, you were suddenly very aware of the chaos surrounding you in the studio as you put your phone back in your pocket. you looked to your left, where jordy was leaning against the wall and scrolling through his phone. to your right was aly, who was scribbling in her songbook in the chair next to you. you remembered you were supposed to be working, too. “we need a new stu.”
“i’m working on it!” hector hollered from inside the booth as he and daisy were setting up equipment and instruments. you glanced up at the glass in front when you heard his voice, accidentally catching the pair share a little kiss. you quickly averted your gaze, smiling to yourself.
“new stu, new view, what it do?” quinton began to freestyle to a beat he was making on the coffee table in front of him. “off 92, posted up with southside crew.”
“okay,” dex laughed, noddinh his head as he was vibing with the beat, making his way out of your line of sight. you heard someone, presumably tyler, join in and add some depth to the beat. it sounded like he was hitting a pencil against a shot glass.
“i got a new boo, but i’m tryna slide with misha, too,” quinton continued, dex adlibbing in the back as quinton lowered his voice to his signature melodic whisper. “on the low, nobody gotta know.”
“would you shut the fuck up?” you heard misha say, followed by a barrage of muffled smacking noises and verbal objections from quinton, who you assumed was on the receiving end of what sounded like an assault by pillow.
laughing to yourself, you leaned your head in aly’s direction, not fully facing her. “pass me the flash drive?” you held your hand out weakly. once you felt the plastic in your palm, you leaned back over and put it into the computer, pulling up the proper files.
“we’re done back here,” daisy smiled at you, she and hector coming out from the booth.
you clapped your hands together. “wonderful. everybody shut up, please.”
you pulled up the twin’s song and let it play, your eyes fixed on the colorful audio loops on the screen. the green ones were tyler’s vocals, the purple were aly’s. it looked like blue was reserved for instruments and red was any added sound effects or layered sounds.
“you two sound really great,” jordy walked up behind aly’s seat, leaning against it as he swayed his head to the beat.
“thanks. i wrote it with our mother in mind,” aly said, the words coming out of her mouth uncomfortably. you placed your hand on hers and gave it a little squeeze, which earned you a look of appreciation.
“it's missing something, though,” tyler scratched the back of his head. “i need the producer squad to give us some assistance.”
“oh, say less,” dex laughed, snapping his fingers to the beat with one hand and holding his glass of hennessy in the other. he danced his way over, taking aly’s seat as she, tyler and jordy moved to give you all some space.
misha sauntered her way over, sitting against the table and flipping her hair over her shoulder. the smell of her sweet perfume floated in the air around you. “i think it just needs some fluffing up. some snapping might work. more vocal layering in certain spots.”
“i agree,” you nodded, dex letting out a satisfied sigh as he took a sip of his cold drink.
“is it good?” misha asked him teasingly and he took his final swig, letting out a more dramatic and drawn out sigh. this time, though, it was on beat with the song. you were pretty sure it was unintentional on his part, since he and misha just shared a laugh before returning their attention to the screen.
after a moment of pondering, you swiveled around in your chair, looking at tyler. “okay, hear me out…”
two weeks of very diligent working between the nine of you had given you a lot to work with for the album. all that was left was to start putting things together. you still had a ways to go, but you had a good starting off point. as much as you hated to admit it, it was a good call on dana’s part to have you all do a group album. the fans seemed to be greatly anticipating the release and the work ethic the nine of you shared was incredible. even in that cramped little studio, you all made it work.
you all agreed to take the day off, but you were still working at some capacity. you had just traded one small space for another, working in your walk-in closet/home studio for the day. you still needed said walk-in to function as a closet, so there were still garment bags pushed up into a corner and shoe boxes haphazardly stacked, surrounding your desk that you had shoved in there. there was just enough space for you to move your chair and safely get out without twisting an ankle, a fate you often flirted with in that room.
in the spirit of your day off, you hadn't done anything too difficult. you were just trying to decide what order you wanted the completed songs to go in. it may seem like an insignificant detail, but the order was important. the transitions between songs couldn't be jarring for the listener. everything had to flow together with natural progression. at this point, it didn't matter since you weren't done with the album, but it was just giving you an idea of how to fill the gaps with future songs.
the sound of your growling stomach indicated that it was time to stop for the day. you quickly saved all your work and headed to the kitchen. you popped some leftovers in the microwave and scrolled on twitter while you waited. the microwave beeped at you, so you set your phone back down and grabbed the bowl, mixing up the contents with your fork. the flash of light coming from your phone got your attention. a text notification.
are you home?
oh, so now he wanted to respond? cute.
despite your annoyance with the situation, you quickly responded with a yes and set the phone back down. you leaned against the counter, eating what little food you had in your reheated bowl. you mixed the contents around with your fork, grumbling. stupid jason and his stupid inability to text back. he could have at least had the decency to leave you on read. he probably didn't even have read receipts on. you weren't sure which was worse. tossing your now empty bowl into the sink, you grabbed your phone to read his next message.
i’ll be over soon.
soon was very vague and you wished that you would've demanded an exact time, but that opportunity had passed by the time you thought about it. you busied yourself with tidying up, trying to make your place look presentable. you even lit your new candle, which you found yourself focusing your attention on while you waited for him to show up. staring at the flame was much more entrancing than you anticipated.
you heard the door buzzer go off. you weren't expecting anyone else, so it had to be him. you leaned against the wall, pressing your finger to the button.
“who goes there?” you presented the question as a joke, but your tone was a little flat.
“it’s the irs,” jason’s voice came through and you buzzed him in.
not too long after, you heard him knock on the door. you cracked it open and the first thing you noticed was his cologne. it was a strong but pleasant scent. spicy and sweet. it was very intoxicating, actually. so much so that you almost forgot you were angry at him.
“hi.”
“hello.”
you opened the door fully and handed the envelope to him. jason eyed it suspiciously. he opened it up and began to count it out in front of you. he made an effort to do it very slow, the sound of the crisp dollars echoing in the quiet hall. his eyes stayed glued to yours as he counted out loud. you leaned against the doorframe as you watched.
“six… seven… eight,” he said, pulling out his wallet and stuffing it with the cash. “thought you would've skimmed some off the top.”
“i should have with how long you made me wait,” you said matter of factly, letting your annoyance be known now.
“i know. i’m sorry,” he sounded honest but you couldn't see it in his face or in his eyes, which was worrisome. it was a nice alternative to listening to a sputter of excuses, though. “let me make it up to you?”
“how do you plan on doing that?”
“i’m so glad you asked,” he smiled. “as it turns out, i've recently come into some money. let me spend it on you?”
“so you like throwing money at your problems?” you asked him. well, you weren't really asking. it was more like you were telling him.
“no,” he said, sounding a little offended. “i just thought-”
“you just thought that throwing money at me would make me forget about the fact that you ignored me for a month.”
“no, no,” he shook his head, sighing in frustration. “listen, i-”
“i really don't wanna hear it,” you said honestly, watching as his frustrated look turned into kicked puppy. you almost felt bad. “i don't like feeling stupid, jason. that's how i feel right now. i want you to make it up to me but you'll have to be a bit more creative than this.”
“you want me to make it up to you?” jason had repeated, confusion on his face.
you poked him harshly in the chest. “you do that or you leave me alone. those are your options. goodbye.”
you shut the door in his face and let out the breath you were holding in. you weren’t sure how jason was going to react to your little ultimatum, but those were your terms. you liked him but you weren’t going to stress over someone you barely knew, especially with your assumptions about him floating around in your head.
“i’ll be right back,” you heard him say through the door, catching you off guard.
“what?”
“don’t go anywhere.”
you didn’t respond but you heard his footsteps getting quieter as he walked down the hall. the elevator ding indicated that he had left. you stood there, confused as to what it was he was trying to do. you were still stewing in your negative emotions, so you went and busied yourself again. you decided the dishes needed washing and got on it right away. in the middle of scrubbing the stubborn sauce stains out of your plate, you heard your door buzzer go off again.
so he did come back after all. interesting.
you buzzed him in like you did before and waited by the door for him. he knocked and when you opened it, you were met with two gifts: a bouquet of pink tulips and a small box of something from the bakery around the corner.
“i shouldn’t have ignored you. it was rude and stupid and i’m sorry. it won’t happen again,” he said to you, holding out the items to you. you hesitantly accepted them, taking the opportunity to look through the plastic opening of the box to see chocolate covered strawberries.
“it better not happen again,” you pouted, looking up at him. you had to appreciate the effort he put in at such short notice. it was a sweet gesture and he actually looked sorry this time.
“it won’t,” he assured you and you smiled.
“i forgive you. but you’re on thin fucking ice,” you reminded him and he grinned at you with a nod.
“i’m going to make it up to you. just you wait,” he said confidently. “not all of us are naturally creative like you, though. you gotta give me some time to think of something else.”
“seems like you’re getting your feet wet with the flower selection,” you noted, taking a whiff of the delicate and fresh scent. they’d look nice on your coffee table.
“lady at the shop said they would convey my sincerest apologies,” he explained, a hopeful look in his eyes. “did it work?”
“for now,” you shrugged, setting the items down on the table next to the door.
“i can accept that.”
“you’re gonna have to because that’s all i’m giving you,” you said firmly. his charm wasn’t going to get him out of this one. not completely. “now go away. i want to eat my berries in peace.”
“i’ll text you as soon as i get the chance,” he told you as you were shutting the door. you peered at him, narrowing your eyes before shutting it again. “i’m serious!”
“goodbye, jason!” you said through the door. you heard his faint farewell as you walked away, plopping on the couch with your dessert in hand.
were you still a little mad at him? yes. but you weren’t going to pass up free stuff, even if you had made all that fuss about the money earlier. at least the gifts had some thought behind them. so long as he held up his end of the deal, you had a feeling being friends with jason wouldn’t be that bad.
hopefully, anyway.

Big Ups: Clipping Pick Their Bandcamp Favorites
“Right from the beginning, we always wanted to make a horror-themed record,” says Jonathan Snipes, a producer in the Los Angeles-based progressive noise-rap trio Clipping, alongside MC Daveed Diggs and fellow beatsmith Bill Hutson. The group’s third project for Sub Pop, There Existed an Addiction to Blood, updates the cult horrorcore hip-hop trend of the mid ‘90s in a thrilling and forward-thinking fashion. It’s a striking and deeply atmospheric record, powered by synth-based sonic experimentalism and grisly concept-focused writing that exudes a sinister and shadowy feel.
There Existed an Addiction to Blood adds to a stellar canon of work that kicked off with Clipping’s introductory midcity mixtape in 2013. “That one was really us learning how to be Clipping, and what we sounded like,” says Hutson, who helped mastermind the project’s metallic, glitch-afflicted beats. On the following year’s debut album, CLPPNG, the crew moved further towards what Hutson calls “dark and noise-tinged instrumentals.” The omission of the letter I in the album title represents the way Diggs avoids rhyming in the first person. Hutson maintains that if much of hip-hop involves MCs rapping about their own lives, Clipping’s music strives to be “a novel, not a memoir.” Case in point: 2016’s Splendor & Misery took shape as an Afrofuturist sci-fi adventure that explored an artificial intelligence world; 2017’s single “The Deep” inspired the author Rivers Solomon to expand the song’s environment into a novella of the same name.
Basing There Existed an Addiction to Blood around horrorcore and gory movies is a natural representation of Clipping’s influences and the way the trio approach writing songs. “Horrorcore is this forgotten and maligned subgenre of hip-hop that we’ve always had a tremendous amount of affection for,” says Hutson. “So much of Clipping is about referencing styles of hip-hop—almost all our songs were conceived as our take on a certain type of rap song—so this horror album was always going to happen.” Snipes adds, “We think of each of these songs as self-contained movie scores of vignettes in a specific genre.”
The original horrorcore movement that inspired Clipping’s latest album was spearheaded by RZA and Prince Paul’s Gravediggaz project, plus artists including Houston’s Ganksta N-I-P, Detroit’s Esham, and New York City’s Flatlinerz. ‘90s horrorcore lyrics were packed with macabre imagery and references to psychological disorders, satanism, and cannibalism; the gruesome verses were often relayed over willfully dank and grimey production. Clipping’s resurrection of the subgenre taps into the same lyrical themes—but this time Digg’s intense verses are backed by marauding waves of monstrous synths, sharp abrasive stabs of discordant noise, and snatches of field recordings that bring a chilling realism to There Existed an Addiction to Blood.
Key song “Run For Your Life” plays out like a frantic short movie. It co-stars Memphis MC La Chat, who used to roll with Three 6 Mafia and the Hypnotize Minds roster back in the ‘90s. “She’s hunting down Daveed and approaching and moving behind him in a car,” says Snipes. “Then in the third verse, we’re fully in the car with her.” To drum up the effect of the protagonist being chased to a bloody demise, Digg’s lyrics are surrounded by constantly shifting ambient noise: The sound of passing cars blasting music and dogs barking literally pulls the listener into the chilling scenario.
The same blend of adventurous production techniques and concept-heavy writing present on Clipping’s latest album also runs through Hutson and Snipes’s Bandcamp recommendations. Blasts of abstract hip-hop lyricism mix with innovative thematic albums and avant-garde film scores, adding up to a smart representation of Clipping’s advanced-level musical DNA.
Bill Hutson
Dax Pierson - Live In Oakland
I first saw Dax Pierson play around 2003, when he was in a group called Subtle that was an Anticon side project with Dose One and Jel. Dax was also the secret weapon of the Themselves project, which was also Dose and Jel, and on tour he’d play keys and finger drum on MPCs. Dax is this compelling, creative performer and composer. This tape came out on Ratskin and it’s from a more recent show—I might have even been at the show! His music is fascinating, almost uncategorizable left-field dance stuff that’s blending all these ideas.
John Wall - Hylic
I was really enamored of improvised music in the early ‘00s, and it’s a lot of what fueled my ravenous collector habit, which came from having to track down these obscure records that came from Japan and Germany and Switzerland and England, where they were only pressing a couple of hundred copies. John Wall is very careful as a computer music composer, and he’d spend years and years cutting up tiny pieces of improvised sounds and turning them into these totally austere and totally alien compositions. I was fascinated by the disparity between how much intention there was behind it and how alien the result sounds. Hylic almost sounds like there’s no human brain making logical choices that would compose this music—it feels like it’s naturally occurring in some way, like you’re listening to the background radiation of the solar system—but there’s also the most extreme version of authorship going into it.
billy woods - Hiding Places
I think billy woods is a fantastic example of this very abstract and angular and strange rapper but with these really strong connections to the history of New York rap. It’s almost like he’s from a different timeline where southern hip-hop didn’t take over the mainstream in the ‘00s and we kept going with Nas and Wu-Tang, and it’s developed into this new form. [Producer] Kenny Segal is a buddy—we’ve toured with him—and he would have been a youngster in the Project Blowed days but came out of the experimental L.A. hip-hop scene that produced Abstract Rude and Freestyle Fellowship and, later with the beatmakers, birthed the whole Low End Theory and Brainfeeder movement. This album is a New York and L.A. collab record that seems to perfectly synthesize two different types of left of center aesthetics, but feels completely natural in a way we wouldn’t have expected maybe 20 years ago.
Kevin Drumm - 09082001 gtr/synth ‘solo’
I included this not because anyone needs me to tell them Kevin Drumm is a fuckin’ noise hero, but I wanted to include Drumm because I think what he’s doing is a really unique thing that Bandcamp can provide: A couple of months ago I bought Drumm’s entire discography for like $22, which was like a hundred or so releases! He puts out so much, and it’s all of such high quality. This specific recording is from my favorite period of his work in the early-2000s, but it wasn’t available [back then] until he started bypassing labels and physical copies and started putting everything up himself direct to the fans.
DEBBY FRIDAY - DEATH DRIVE
[The label] Deathbomb Arc put out some of the first Clipping stuff. I think of [founder] Brian Miller as A&Ring my listening habits because he’s out there finding new artists I wouldn’t come across and putting out their records. DEBBY FRIDAY completely blew me away—this release seems both out of nowhere and so fully formed. It’s just brilliant and sort of industrial hip-hop. It’s really like the best Skinny Puppy album we never got but with way better lyrics and content and performance. It’s so smart and dark—she’s a really great lyricist.
Jonathan Snipes
Missincinatti - remove not the ancient landmarks
Missincinatti was Jeremy Drake, Jessica Catron, and Corey Fogel, and they had this band for a short time in L.A. where they played these contemporary arrangements of sea shanties. They’re all incredible musicians, and their arrangements were always so off-kilter and smart. This album is only on Bandcamp, and it’s like a little monument to this band that I loved so much for a short time. One of my favorite things is arrangements of folk music that almost feel like critical theory about folk music and this project feels like it’s in this realm. I wish they were still around playing shows so I could go to them.
François-Eudes Chanfrault - Inside
I discovered François-Eudes Chanfrault when I saw the movie for which this is the score. Then, when I started looking into François’s music, I realized that I’d run across him in online nerdy computer music circles. He became one of my favorite composers, and I became obsessed with tracking his music down. The development of the Inside score is really slow and tasteful, and that’s hard to accomplish when working with film. I also score movies, and film music always feels like if the music’s following a picture. It wants to be fast and have abrupt changes—but François is someone who is somehow able to make these really long elegant cues that actually play against the action of the film in this really striking way. It’s probably the last score I’d expect anybody to write for that movie, and it hits exactly the right tone. His use of electronics and computers and his use of a chamber ensemble are perfectly matched.
Lauren Bousfield - Fire Songs
Lauren’s a really good friend, and this album’s only available on Bandcamp. She’s an incredible musician—an absolute genius. This is the album she released shortly after her house burned down and she lost all her possessions in the fire. It feels very personal. It’s easy to think of electronic and breakcore as just splattered breakbeats that feel mechanical and machine-based. But this one, with the context [of the backstory], feels very emotional, and almost makes me tear up when I hear it.
Bryce Miller - W A S P
Bryce Miller is someone I found through some Bandcamp journalism, which I read regularly. This album, which is based on the Stieg Larsson Millennium books, is elegant and precise. There’s a lot of this retro ’80s synthwave stuff flying around—I’ve made a fair bit of it myself—but somehow this really nailed the tone of feeling very contemporary, but also very ancient. It’s like what I wanted synth records in the ’80s to sound like at the time, but they never quite did. The sense of melody and structure and tension and release is really spot on. Bryce feels like a real composer in that realm.
Max Tundra - With Love To Mummy
I first heard Max Tundra on the double disc compilation Tigerbeat6 Inc. from like 2001. I was really into Aphex Twin and Squarepusher and Kid606 and Matmos, and I was trying to figure out who was doing weird electronic music and that comp came out and it ended up being a huge window into bands I’d never heard of. Max Tundra’s track [“The Bill”] sounded like a general MIDI soundtrack to a spy show that he’d recorded into his answering machine! I’ve been a lifelong fan of his since then, and this collection is, like, his teenage recordings—it’s really interesting to hear his old music. It’s charming and fun to listen to as a fan, and to note where his music took him after that. I suppose other people feel the same way about that Radiohead release.

Music HC’s
Nya and Cole listen to heavy metal and hard rock together. They both love Evanescence.
Cole is also into 90′s punk music: Green Day, Blink-182, Nirvana, etc.
Nya occasionally listens to Savage Garden and NSync but shh don’t tell anyone.
Kai is more into hiphop and rap, he’s got Watsky, Eminem and Drake but he’s also got Black Eyed Peas and Post Malone.
Jay likes Kpop and pop in general, he’ll listen to Baby Metal and BTS but also Meghan Trainor and Avril Lavine, and he’ll shamelessly belt out some Abba.
He also really loves Katy Perry and Taylor Swift
Zane enjoys instrumental pop, he loves Lindsey Stirling. But he also loves instrumental music in general and will enjoy some classical music with Master Wu.
Occasionally he likes some indie pop for more upbeat activities.
Morro is angst angst a n g s t, emo and punk. Twenty One Pilots, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, Paramore, My Chemical Romance, that’s all he ever listens to.
Lloyd likes pop as well, but he’s more Backstreet Boys, NSync, Halsey, Coldplay, that kind of pop music.
He l o v e s Billie Eilish
He’s got some P!ATD in his library and some Queen
And a couple of P!nk and Ed Sheeran
Who can sing and dance? Why I’m so glad you asked!
Cole
We all know this boy can out-dance anyone and everyone, that’s not in question, he’ll bust a move and shame everyone else
So poised and precise. He is beauty, he is grace
He can do ballet, breakdancing, freestyle, you name it he can do it
Singing, though? Eh. He can carry a tune on key, can sight-read music, and his voice is an okay alto, but nothing super special otherwise
Strikes me as a drummer type, sets and follows the beat
Can do the death metal screamo singing if he drinks a lot of water and is willing to talk like a chain smoker for a few days
Kai
Can’t really sing, his voice is sorta pitchy and he doesn’t transition to different notes well so it sounds sorta messy
Rapping, though? Oh hell yeah he can do that, he’ll freestyle diss you and drop the mic
I fully believe he’d be a soundcloud rapper with tracks as fire as his true potential
Freestyle or hiphop dancing he can almost keep up with Cole but that’s all he can do
However his energy makes up for his lack of poise, he throws himself into every dance without shame and always has a great time, his energy is infectious
Jay
Can sing! He has a medium-range voice and can actually reach some of the higher notes
He isn’t the best at sight reading but if he listens to a song he can pick up on it pretty quick and sing along and he’ll learn that way
He’s good at adding in a little bit of vibrato too
Dancing? No. God no. He’ll step on your feet, or trip over his own and knock something over, and somehow find a way to set something on fire
For the most part he just does the jump-up-and-down-in-place thing is considered dancing, and will pump his fist, and that’s enough
Lloyd
Doesn’t know how to whistle. He tries but he can’t do it
Can’t sing at all please don’t ask him to
Will sing anyways in the shower, it sounds like some poor animal is being tortured
Can kinda dance. More than Jay, but not like Cole or Kai.
He’s a bit awkward and self-conscious, but once he loosens up and calms down he can do some basic moves
He gets really into dances like Cotton Eye Jo, Electric Slide, and Cupid Shuffle
He will outshine e v e r y o n e by showing that he can actually do the Dance of Doom
Nya
Has a pretty good range, can carry a tune
Can play guitar and so she can also sight-read music and actually knows a thing or two about pitch and notes
Can absolutely dance, unlike all the guys she can do a split and she’ll totally use that to her advantage on the dance floor to show everyone up
Zane
Perfect. Like. It’s eerie. He has a great range, his voice is smooth and perfect
Sometimes he’s just a little bit flat
But he picks up on nearly any lyrics so quickly
Yes, he can dance the robot.
Dancing, however, is not really his forte. It requires really fluid movement and while he’s not uncoordinated, he is a bit stiff and precise in his movements
If you give him a dance to learn though, he’ll practice and learn it to technical perfection given time
Morro
Won’t sing. Blatantly refuses to.
Just no.
But he has a decent voice. Kinda like Cole, nothing special but he’s not bad.
Also refuses to dance, both out of pride and because he’s self-conscious of doing something he feels will make him look silly
He’d be off wall-flowering and sulking watching everyone else
I feel like slow-dancing he’d sweep you off your feet, he’d know his way around that
But other than that, the most you’ll get from him is foot tapping and a bit of head-nodding to the beat, maybe drumming his fingers

The Best of the 1st Half -*2019 Pundit’s PlayLi$t*
Tumblr media
Yeah so quite a bit has gone down since the ball dropped.
Everyone talks about how having a baby can change a person, but in my opinion it doesn’t change a person as much as it evolves a person into someone that can still love all of the stuff they always loved, *plus* a little person that they now put before anything else in their day to day life. My friends, that is where I am at in this moment in life. No, I do not write as much as I used to, but I’m happier now than have been in some time, and I love music just as much as I ever did. I am still learning the balance, but I’m also pretty excited to have a little daughter that I will be able to share my highly opinionated thoughts on hip-hop with, whether she wants to hear them or not (most likely not).
These rankings are based on the following key factors: my personal favorites (this is technically not just a list of my favorite songs), plus songs that I thought were especially well done or influential (even if they may not have resonated me as much as everyone else), diverse (I didn’t want to have 10 songs from the same artist, but I would have if I was only basing this list on personal faves), especially strong production and/or verses, and the song had to be officially released prior to July 1st.
As for the year in rap music in general up through the close of June, it has been a strong one. What the genre has lacked in strong “mainstream” releases, it has made up for with enough fantastic underground hip-hop projects that belong in steady rotation for a long time. So here it is, at last, my list of the best rap songs of the first half of 2019… 🙏
1. “Palmolive” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib feat. Pusha T & Killer Mike
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSn_r2w-idg
(Bandana is quite an album, and “Palmolive” is quite a song. One terrific verse from Freddie, a great hook from Killer Mike, and then a verse of the year front runner with Pusha’s verse, all over a soulful Madlib back-drop?? Yikes. Freddie Gibbs & Madlib have made all rap fans very proud in 2019.)
2. “Thank God” - Tree
https://soundcloud.com/mctreeg/thank-god?in=mctreeg/sets/wegrownnow
(Tree’s We Grown Now is such an amazing album. I can’t recall the last time I heard a project that felt like a living, breathing work of art that logs the life of a man that has been through life’s ups and downs and is just happy to be here to talk about it.)
3. “Crown For Kings” - Benny feat. Black Thought
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtTu_TC3f6A
(Blown away. Black Thought and Griselda?? Bars on top of bars on top of bars...two verse of the year contenders, easily.)
4. “Ricky” - Denzel Curry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WHm6tfvKlk
(As soon as you press play, you can feel the humidity coming off of this song as if we were in the crowd with Curry down in Florida. A wonderful homage to his father, and the Carol City of which he hails.)
5. “Massage Seats” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
https://soundcloud.com/gangstagibbs/massage-seats?in=gangstagibbs/sets/bandana-16
(Smooth as Helllll. “This ain’t for soccer mamas this is for the underground” is right.)
6. “Funeral March (The Dirge)” - Your Old Droog feat. Mach-Hommy
https://soundcloud.com/your-old-droog/funeral-march-the-dirge-feat?in=your-old-droog/sets/it-wasnt-even-close-1
(One of the hardest sounding songs in recent memory. I can hear these too aggressive rhymers do this all day.)
7. “Crime Pays” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
https://soundcloud.com/gangstagibbs/crime-pays?in=gangstagibbs/sets/bandana-16
(So quintessential to Bandana’s vibe this thing feels like it has a pulse. I was listening to this on my walk home the other day and it put me in such a breezy headspace, I can’t even describe it any other way than simply saying it’s another classic Madlib production.)
8. “5 to 50” - Benny feat. India
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQGRPxrHtjI
(Captivating. Benny and The Alchemist join forces to concoct a song so real it makes 90% of drug dealer talk in rap music sound phony.)
9. “There U R” - Tree
https://soundcloud.com/mctreeg/there-u-r?in=mctreeg/sets/wegrownnow
(Give this man his flowers now. There are a lot of talented artists in rap music, but none tackle a song like an old Blues man...none except Tree, that is.)
10. “Freestyle Shit” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
https://soundcloud.com/gangstagibbs/freestyle-s-t?in=gangstagibbs/sets/bandana-16
(Pffffew, that Gibbs delivery....right from the get-go on the album’s first song it’s so clear that Bandana is a special project.)
11. “Sunday School” - Benny feat. 38 Spesh & Jadakiss
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ero1Xexyhs
(Good luck picking the best verse here! All three kill it, but Spesh may end up pulling ahead with a few key haymakers.)
12. “Situations” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
https://soundcloud.com/gangstagibbs/situations?in=gangstagibbs/sets/bandana-16
(One of Bandana’s more minimalistic instrumentals, and it takes off thanks to the jet pack provided by Gibbs’ absolutely sensational contributions on this one.)
13. “Cokewhite” - Goldlink feat. Pusha T
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zCGiHhTxMM
(One of a few verse of the year contenders from King Push.)
14. “Funeral” - Tree & Parallel Thought
https://parallelthought1.bandcamp.com/track/funeral
(I hope with all of my heart that songs like this aren’t part of Tree’s process of letting go of the music biz, but even if it is, what a beautiful way to go out.)
15. “Bandana” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib feat. Assassin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWCciqqzno4
(While it may not have made the final cut of the Bandana album that shares it’s name, this reggae-tinged Madlib blessed riot starter has been one of my favorite songs of the year since it dropped and it keeps feeling better to me.)
16. “Flights” - Tree
https://soundcloud.com/mctreeg/flights?in=mctreeg/sets/wegrownnow
(Tree kills it with the autobiographical joints, and this soulful walk down memory lane is as enthralling as an audio diary.)
17. “To Whom It May Concern” - Jim Jones feat. Cam'ron, Guordan Banks, Benny The Butcher and Conway
https://soundcloud.com/jim-jones-capo/to-whom-it-may-concern-feat-camron-guordon-banks-benny-the-butcher-conway-the-machine?in=jim-jones-capo/sets/el-capo
(A Dipset and Griselda collaboration is enough to make someone like me get emotional...anyone have a tissue, this Benny-Cam’ron-Conway back to back series is too much to handle!?)
18. “Dominate” - DJ Muggs & Eto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxjTKqpMHIE
(Straight menace music. Muggs & Eto would have made Mobb Deep proud with “Dominate”...especially Muggs, this beat is brutal!)
19. “Under The Train (Transporting)” - Your Old Droog
https://soundcloud.com/your-old-droog/under-the-train-transporting-1
(Droog’s Transportation album may be the perfect travelling companion for moving through the streets of NYC, and this song may be the crown jewel. This has the feel of a classic New York anthem and I am crazy for it.)
20. “Obamacare” - Quelle Chris
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-F19d5PcJY
(Another year, another thought provoking Quelle Chris project. He seems to be getting better with age, is that possible?)
21. “Attics” - DJ Muggs & Eto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UmYxcv4YTs
(Sure Muggs & Eto dropped a banger of an album with Hell’s Roof, .but “Attics” has the strength to be a career defining track for Eto. This is dark poetry from the hungriest parts of upstate NY.)
22. “ZUU” - Denzel Curry
https://soundcloud.com/denzelcurryph/zuu?in=denzelcurryph/sets/zuu-3
(A rousing intro to what I would consider the best “mainstream” rap album of 2019 so far.)
23. “Chasing Ghosts” - Your Old Droog feat. Roc Marciano
https://soundcloud.com/your-old-droog/chasing-ghosts-feat-roc?in=your-old-droog/sets/it-wasnt-even-close-1
(What a great example of why these two are so good at what they do. Eerie underground hip-hop at its’ finest.)
24. “Giannis” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib feat. Anderson .Paak
https://soundcloud.com/gangstagibbs/giannis-feat-anderson-paak?in=gangstagibbs/sets/bandana-16
(One of the funkier standouts from Bandana, and album full of standouts. Paak and Gibbs tap dance all over this one.)
25. “18 Wheeler” - Benny feat. Pusha T
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdZC8uBwJ4Q&list=PLVipAi3U-JouPCQvz3KoH2B1VAKAZc7m4&index=6
(At this point, what else needs to be said about the potency of these two rap-writers? Calling it “coke rap” wouldn’t even begin to explain how good these two are when it comes to rapping.)
26. “Cubicle” - Buddy feat. 03 Greedo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ9Yw7i_Fo8
(What a slept-on smash from Buddy and 03 Greedo. Both artists do the West Coast proud with one of my favorite cuts off of the deluxe edition of Harlan & Alondra.)
27. “AUTOMATIC” - Denzel Curry
https://soundcloud.com/denzelcurryph/automatic?in=denzelcurryph/sets/zuu-3
(Denzel Curry and Tay Keith prove to be a potent combination on this ZUU banger.)
28. “IMG” - Nolan The Ninja
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vNvRLIQHVs
(Nolan has blessed us with a number of great songs in 2019, but I think this one epitomizes just how much he has progressed as a rap artist.)
29. “Make No Issues Of It” - Jim Jones
https://soundcloud.com/jim-jones-capo/make-no-issues-of-it?in=jim-jones-capo/sets/el-capo
(Jimmy did his thing...but Heatmakerz kicks the damn door down.)
30. “Splinters” - Fly Anakin & Tuamie feat. ANKHLEJOHN & Al.Divino
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWORdUQAEcc
(Just a chilling collaboration from some of the best artists that underground hip-hop has to offer, that’s all.)
31. “Deadass” - Kemba
https://soundcloud.com/kembaland/deadass-2
(Unfortunately, in any other era this should have been a huge rap hit. Fortunately, in this era it can be praised as one of the best underground smashes of the year.)
32. “Wild Minks” - Quelle Chris feat. Mach-Hommy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dQmPX1C0Vk
(Quelle and Mach make beautiful music together, and they don’t come much more beautiful than this one.)
33. “Education” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib feat. Yasiin Bey & Black Thought
https://soundcloud.com/gangstagibbs/education-feat-yasiin-bey?in=gangstagibbs/sets/bandana-16
(As if that line-up isn’t enough to make any hip-hop head salivate, what’s even more impressive is the final product manages to meet expectations.)
34. “Dynasties” - Tedy Andreas
https://soundcloud.com/tedyandreas/dynasties-prod-graphwize
(Dope beat, dope MC and a killer hook. I can’t be the only longterm fan that Tedy earned with this one.)
35. “Flat Tummy Tea” - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
https://soundcloud.com/gangstagibbs/flat-tummy-tea
(I liked it when it first dropped, love it even more now. Freddie straight MURDERS this one...)
36. “Eedeot Bwoy” - Mach-Hommy feat. Your Old Droog & Tha God Fahim
https://soundcloud.com/mach-hommy/eedeot-bwoy-feat-tha-god-fahim?in=mach-hommy/sets/wap-konn-joj-1
(What a great year for both Mach & Droog. This joint feels like 3:00AM Wake Up Show music...and I love that!)
37. “2016” - Jamal Gasol
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxEBzhV6Ar4
(True Stories is quite possibly my favorite project from Gasol’s impressive discography, and this one has been in my rotation for all of 2019 thus far. Jamal is another one of upstate New York’s gem MCs, so if you’re a fan of Benny and Griselda, definitely check out Niagara’s Jamal Gasol.)
38. “Field Negro” - Royce Da 5′9″
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yDmU881LTo
(An unorthodox production anchored by one of the best writers in the history of the genre, that’s all. Royce murders this thing with so many quotables...yet you’re still somehow sleeping on Royce???)
39. “Know The Type” - Lansky Jones feat. CJ Fly & Mr. Muthafuckin' Exquire
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riRJk2QiROI
(What happens when a collection of some of NYC’s most talented, but least heralded MC’s join forces to deliver what sounds like a classic mid-90′s throwback joint? They create one of the smoothest rap songs of 2019.)
40. “Spider Hole” - Billy Woods & Kenny Segal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1WBEi5LlkI
(Beautifully bleak music from Billy Woods and Kenny Segal, who demonstrate brilliant chemistry throughout Hiding Places.)
41. “Bad Boys” - Pivot Gang (Joseph Chilliams, Saba, MFnMelo) feat. Smino
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCaBVqi4Rag
(This one didn’t blow up - at least not yet - but I have no idea why!? This track, like so much of Pivot Gang’s You Can’t Sit With Us album, is such a fantastic showcase for Chi-town’s deep hip-hop scene.)
42. “Last Supper” - Eto & DJ Muggs feat. Meyhem Lauren
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCc47fVzptU
(A dope song from a dope album, sure...but it’s that Meyhem verse that catapults this joint into the top 50 of the year through June. “I don’t have kids just clothes, cars & cribs” is easily one of the year’s best opening bars!)
43. “$ream - Rigz (Da Cloth)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piGwjW27ZRQ
(Not just one of Rochester’s finest, Rigz is quite simply one of hip-hop’s finest MC’s.)
44. “HolOnHolOn” - Fly Anakin & Tuamie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCbgGn2BXUc&list=PLAfLqY9BQJkyjUuDAEn7cehQ3DZWAZogX&index=4
(Another GORGEOUS track from Mutant Academy. Is it me or does Tuamie channel some Jay Dee-esque vibes with this one?)
45. “Jason Statham, Pt. 2” - Pivot Gang (Joseph Chilliams, Saba, MFnMelo)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qy57oefUZXg
(A very dope song from a very dope album. Pivot Gang’s project deserved all of the attention that Revenge of the Dreamers received, and then some. This is Chicago all-star work.)
46. “CAROLMART” - Denzel Curry feat. Ice Billion Berg
https://soundcloud.com/denzelcurryph/carolmart-feat-ice-billion?in=denzelcurryph/sets/zuu-3
(One of the bounciest joints on a very bouncy album, here Denzel successfully harkens back to the regional style that influenced him without sounding even the slightest bit dated.)
47. “Down” - JID, Bas, J. Cole, EARTHGANG & Young Nudy (Dreamville)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibvxfN7G6Gs
(The names in this line-up were enough to keep the hype building for Revenge of the Dreamers 3. However, it’s the performance of the artists on the track that have kept it in heavy rotation over here.)
48. “207” - Your Old Droog
https://soundcloud.com/your-old-droog/207-1
(Weaving funny lyrics with poignant observations has always been one of Your Old Droog’s specialties. By tackling personal topics such as agoraphobia and his general anti-social behavior Droog is able to elevate this song to stand-out status.)
49. “Only Built For Corrilinks” - Quadry & Tuamie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZXufjWO1E4
(Travelling waaaay under the radar is Baton Rouge’s Quadry, who dropped a stellar project helmed by rising underground producer extraordinaire, Tuamie. The duo’s Emergency Raps, Vol. 5 is a quick but impressive listen.)
50. “Oaks” - BULLIES (Denmark Vessey, DrxQuinnx and Azarias)
https://fxckrxp.bandcamp.com/track/oaks
(A criminally underrated project that stands amongst this year’s finest, Denmark, Quinn & Azarias have fantastic musical chemistry that can be found all across the Bullies album. In another time and another place, Bullies would fit in well alongside Def Jux’s starting line-up.)

🔊: lo siento ( lyrics + lines ) | ( dance ) | 👚 duo performance with 💖 sakura miyawaki & kenta takada mentions: @rkmason, @rkxkikwang, @rkchoutzuyu, @rkkenta, @hyojinrk, & @rkkyungsoo
sakura isn’t one to showcase an upside-down smile, practically a frown on her bright features. she’s a ray of energy, an energy pill if you might even call her but she still has her limitations just like everyone else. she’s only human in spite of her charisma on stage, she still finds it hard to believe that as the episodes go by, so do her friends say goodbye. she’s never one to take it too well. moving around different parts of australia throughout her lifetime, every time she made friends, she’d cling but eventually parted ways, causing a great rift from her friendships. she’s the kind of person to store friendships in her heart deeply, always willing to go out of her way for her friends. she’d consider them a second family when her parents were out of the country, friends are her source of happiness!
she’s met faces where she forgotten in time too. sakura knew friends that she couldn’t remember by name but recognises them by their faces, it was at a time she went to summer adventure camp as a six year old in kyushu. this feels similar to that time, she’s growing at a certain distance from the ones she loves. she should’ve said hi or a good morning to her best friends, asking her other friends how they are doing as well! but she’s got her time busy filled with volunteer work from the aquarium, practising and being in and out of the studio for recordings or dance rehearsals, and university.
it feels like everything’s overwhelming, got a whole lot on her plate and almost as if she was carrying the whole world on her shoulders, juggling it. she had to balance everything out to the point she’d follow a schedule to keep herself grounded. that’s a great and healthy technique to go on about her days other than her body adjusting to auto-pilot mode for a lot of her personal moments. noted that sakura did her best to do her work while remaining sane throughout it. she liked her free time too much, especially freedom!
sadness flows through her as she nights pass by realising that she can’t share the same spotlight with any of her best friends. that meant no kikwang or tzuyu, plus she hasn’t even hit them up. she knows lacking but she’s afraid to say a word to her friends after the loss. she felt it too but she tried not to dwell on it too hard as she needed to smile on her performances, people were taking pictures and the cameras are all over the place. plus the big five ceo/judges had their eyes locked on the australian gal.
though, there’s faces she doesn’t want off the show that can be on the risk… it feels that anyone can be eliminated for various reasons. sakura didn’t expect herself to make it this far but she’s grateful for the experiences that are letting her experiment with the best of her abilities and themes that compliment her flair for rapping and music. she can only wish for the best when it comes to the others! she has to give in the other half her partner is dedicated to this project, she can’t be unjust and fair to her duo.
kenta feels refreshing and nostalgic, she’s reminded of how and communicating in japanese without hesitation. she gets along with him perfectly, vibing with his energy effortlessly. the aren’t feisty but rather friendly to one another! she’s been aware of his presence, long before this took place to where they’re led on the chapter of the mnet global audition season five.  he’s definitely a better dancer than her, without a doubt. so she finds solace in his advice when she learns through the moves over and over again until she moves through the choreography fluidly. it didn’t take much for sakura to memorise the instructions though. she’s able to dance but not on a level where she can run up on the stage freestyling to a strong rhythm! she’s on the flexible side than showing off sharp moves.
she touches up on her spanish from years ago, going through her favourite spanish playlist to help pick her pronunciation so that she doesn’t sound like she’s completely new to the language and its structures. she took the language repeatedly, moving up to levels on where she was able to hold a conversation in latin america and spain throughout her travels with her parents. sometimes, she’d rather sing in spanish rather than english but she didn’t get on the levels to be fluent. perhaps next semester she will if there’s extra time for her to fit in with her classes and the labs. she’s got the lyrics down after a couple of hours of singing through it, she needs to practise her pitch to hold a tune.
sakura’s vocals aren’t horrid, she’s able to stay on-key and present her soft, relaxing tone to her voice. she didn’t rely on herself to hit the high notes when it came to the ad libs, she worked around the song to stay within her range when in the recording. the sound is sweet and easy on the ears, meshing with the song quite well actually. there’s a part where she gets to a korean rap which requires her to flip the switch again to another language! she speaks korean on the daily so it isn’t hard to find the unique flow in her rap.
sharing tips with her duo partner is also essential, she’s giving him some pointers on facial expression when it comes to dancing. an aspect that judges make sure that they judge and notice when performers are on the stage. she’s been told that much from trainees that she knows of.
piecing the dance and live singing wasn’t exactly hard, the movements are simple. she needed to find the perfect outfit to go with the theme of the song, she decides to go with a flowy red dress with ruffles that was cool enough for her to dance in freely. gradually, being on the spotlight makes it a little hotter temperature-wise in terms of body heat. she’s going to perform in an area of luminescent so it’s best to stay in thin layers. she hasn’t worn heels when performing in so long but she picked up a cute pair of red dress shoes that looked like they were comfortable, tapping all around here and there when dancing. this outfit should work wonders with impressions! red is a nice, sultry colour that compliments her.
she sits down patiently until it was her turn to be called up.
she’s one of the first few to come up with her partner, kenta. she takes a bow greeting the other contestants who are watching, as well as the judges with a big cordial curve on her lips. waving a hand before the music starts, she lets the broadcast be known what she and kenta are as a duo! “we’re the global couple duo! and this is our performance for today. i hope you guys enjoy it!” she looks over at kenta, greeting him with a small smile too. he looked so fancy in this attire, a great choice for this theme that went with her red dress.
the pre-recording of her voice starts off, it’s a soft sound to the elements. she takes the lead up front, sliding to the side and letting kenta sing through the first lines. she makes sure to follow through the choreography naturally, showing a smile at all times as she’s enjoying the upbeat vibes from the song. the instrumentals’ a  good choice, it’s not the typical kpop sound but that’s what she was aiming for. to try out different themes to which she liked, she intends to be a versatile artist. she’s known to be a rapper but can also hold the title to being at least, if not, an average vocalist.
she moves her hips to the sound of the beat, staying on par with the rhythm of the song, getting ready to sing through the spanish lyrics. leslie grace has a pretty elegant-sounding voice with a light tone to it, so it’s not hard to sing-along to but sakura prefers to sing in her own tone to not sound like a copycat, trying to imitate the artist. sakura’s never been on this level where she has to dance in heels, holding a microphone and singing at the same time. maybe even rapping as it’s coming up. she’s crouching as she sings then picks herself back up on the floor once that part is over with.
grace is an essence she has to retain throughout the entirety of this performance, sakura’s picked up the tweaked up choreography that kenta improved to make her movements lean on the feminine side. she faces him in certain moments, with a deep look to her eye––emotions are deep, making the stage more entertaining. delivering a good and energetic performance, one that many will enjoy is her goal! she picks herself up elegantly through the dancing, delivering a torrid image than her typical signature cute expressions.
who knew she sounds so good in stage speaking three languages? english, korean, and spanish.
the dance is not normally in her element but she loves the light ballroom dancing and tangos that takes place in the chorus! it’s even more fun when she twirls, when she does she lets out some giggles. it truly looked like she was having a great time on the stage without faking it. that’s how much she liked music, breathing for the sensation of it. holding hands are couple things but kenta’s a good friend that sakura doesn’t flinch but flows with his dancing naturally too. practising made amazing results.
kenta’s korean is ridiculously good to the point sakura wishes she spoke it like him as she needs to learn more but is holding up to the best she can do. she mirrors the dance movements that kenta is doing, making sure to stay in sync with the beats. she doesn’t have a whole lot of experience with harmonising but this was good practise for it, she doesn’t sound horrible as sakura’s been practising to tune in with kenta’s vocals for this specific part. she takes some parts from the chorus but stays on tune the whole time whilst dancing through.
english lines come out from her voice pleasantly, no accent and punctual. her accent with her spanish sounded crisp too, sakura’s really holding up with speaking the languages. she’s more surprised that she didn’t wind up using a japanese song but she needs to leave a mark for this season. she’s more than just a pretty face or a jane doe.
once the rap comes up, sakura uses a stronger tone to her accent to adjust to the risque theme but not explicit to the point it would sound suggestable and not suitable for work. she still retains a lighthearted feeling to her rapping, but sakura has the charisma to get her through this and she can work through the rap without breaking a sweat. it’s what she’s best at, delivering a good verse with eccentric energy! she moves through the twirls swiftly, with a grin on her features as she dances!
when the instrumental is at its last few minutes, she shifts her body into a pose for the end. the spotlight on her and kenta, she takes a polite bow before taking her leave. still, the faith in her friends not being eliminated and kenta doesn’t leave her system. it gives her an itchy antsy nerve-wracking feeling but decides to stay to watch the rest of the performances. she wanted to see what mason, hyojin and kyungsoo had to show. she also wants to cheer for them, giving them some encouragement as the stage can be intense! sakura is the kind of person to stay behind her friends to support them in events.

Some music themed Headcanons
Alt title. ; oml an original post again woah
So yeah, recently I've found a lot of those kinds of music videos where it's like a chorus or smth but it's voices matched to the matsus? And I love them? But they've given me headcanons
so here we go (a few for each) ;
Osomatsu
・He would probably lack the discipline in music, so would low-key admire his brothers who do have that seriousness about it because Omg can u teach me??? How to take this seriously? I really wanna,,,
・Although he lacks discipline, he does have quite good rhythm and vocal range, both notes and style wise. He can sing soft lullabies or even do the vibrato and throaty growls of rock songs
(hey also kinda related but it's an Osomatsu UTAU which wasn't tuned to any of my Headcanons sadly but it made me sob so uh you can sob too)
Karamatsu
・Although he plays his instruments most frequently, he is still at maybe the 2nd music grade chords. Tricky melody work just doesn't work, as he tends to play laid back tunes. He tends to not bother since he would 'never use that skill anyway with his style' or so he says
・He has attempted other instruments before, like trombone, drums, etc-. When he was going through his obviously quiet, shy, meek phase, he did play Saxophone to make himself louder in comparison to his brothers. Although this did lead him to his love of Jazz music, in the end he tends to gear towards guitar (more on this later)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
・He will bop along to Jazz and upbeat songs, probably tapping his feet or going full Elvis with the whole choreography. He goes full Elvis because he likes to feel the music in his whole body and soul, not just listen to it.
・Tries to sing in English a lot to practise his language skills
Choromatsu
・A classical boi, probably plays Cello or Violin. I headcanon Violin more, purely cus it's easier to play weeb songs on he's show to have one in the hesokuri wars Fujio Rock Festival
Tumblr media Tumblr media
・Like Kara, he prefers the slow, laid back songs for casual play. But he's also a closeted drama queen and lives for pieces like Phantom of the Opera (as much as he hates to admit it), and really likes trying to capture the atmosphere.
・(bonus (also applies with both violin and Cello HC)) He plays weeb songs as much as he can. He's definitely tried to play 'The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku', ofc. He did it successfully after about two weeks of constant learning and winding everyone up with it, but that much practise meant a new bow, oof.
・Has an idol key chain on his violin case. Also has a folder of idol music as sheet music for when he wants to low-key be weeb,,
Ichimatsu
・He plays electric guitar. This HC actually has some grounds though, as if you remember, he turned up like this to Totoko's place;
(He also has a guitar in his Fujio Rock Festival suits)
Tumblr media
In conclusion, guitar boyo numéro purpleo
・To continue my previous HC, in the movie (from what we've seen in trailers) he's a kind of 'cool kid', i.e. he has friends and seems p. confident. This leads me to believe he was probably playing guitar back then. Which also leads me to the cute idea that actually, Karamatsu picked up the guitar and the cool-guy exterior from Ichimatsu back in High-school.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
・And the final kicker; he gets embarrassed by Karamatsu being OTT and playing guitar not put of 'painfulness', but out of embarrassment like a toddler imitating you - he's flustered that Karamatsu imitated him because Kara thought he was cool and looked up to him
What's up with that cute shit
・(bonus) Sings really nice too, he has a soft, deep voice.
He also has cat stickers all over his guitar case. He likes to doodle cats in metallic marker on the case so they show up too bcus why not. He insists they're stickers because 'no not another thing for them to aww at me about '
Jyushimatsu
・Has more rhythm and discipline than you think. Baseball requires good timing, he gets a lot of his musical rhythm and timing skills from that (surprisingly)
・Drummer boy; he's the backbone of the grouo when playing with his brothers (rhythm base duh), but likes to freestyle sometimes and throw in a couple of fast bars to keep them one their toes
Tumblr media
・Does have a really nice voice when he's not yelling or smth, but he really likes doing rap covers/adlibs in songs - that way he can get his energy out in a constructive way.
Todomatsu
・Probably plays something cutesy like a flute. Or a keytar (again, Fujio Rock Festival references here).
・Since he's very up to date with the world, and has social media, you can bet your ass he has a cover channel on YouTube and NicoNicoDouga. He's probably a (U/You)taite, and has done a couple of choruses. Has quite good vocal flexibility, in that he can go very feminine sounding, but also get his voice relatively deep. Not as deep as Ichi or Kara, but it's there.
Tumblr media
・He likes the rock hipster look, with the 'cute pins on the messenger boy cap' look. But he doesn't wear that look out much, as it doesn't match his normal aesthetic.
。~°+*🌟*+°~ 。~°+*🌟*+°~ 。
Tumblr media
。~°+*🌟*+°~ 。~°+*🌟*+°~ 。
Thanks for reading! I hope you guys like my insights into what I think the matsus would be like with music! Feel free to send any asks my way~

5 Female Rappers You Should Know
Tumblr media
No other culture has impacted the world in the way that Hip-Hop has. While lyricists make up only one element of the all encompassing art, they are often placed at the forefront of it, and there are some pretty dope female emcees that are graciously and fearlessly leading the charge. Artists like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and an entire host of “Dolls” have seen an ongoing amount of commercial success due to their ultra seductive nature and sexually-liberated lyrics. Other rappers, like Jamla recording artist Rapsody, have made it a point to strictly popularize their flagrant ability to rock the mic.
With all the new female energy pulsating through the movement, here are 5 female rappers you should be listening to.
Noname
Fateema Nyeema Warner, also known as Noname, is a poet and rapper from Chicago. Her debut mixtape, Telefone, dropped back in 2016 with features from acts including Xavier Omär, Smino, and Ravyn Lenae. A dual genre act fulfilling both jazz rap as well as neo soul categories, the 27-year old artist’s songbird cadence over an ill selection of melodic beats coexist in the most natural way. Serving as a solid accompaniment, her floetic vibes will lead you on an explorative mission into the lyricist’s own train of thought. Noname recently released her debut studio album, Room 25, back in September and the body of work does not disappoint.
Noname is set to perform at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on February 21.
Kari Faux
Upon first listen, you’d swear this 26-year old Arkansas-bred emcee is one of the flyest California-born ladies to ever exist. Her smooth West Coast flow appears to melt into each track, creating some of the chillest vibes you’ll ever catch. After a series of mixtapes stemming from 2012, Kari’s debut studio album, Lost En Los Angeles, was released in 2015, to which HBO’s hit series “Insecure” turned to for use of her track “Lie 2 My Face”, but that wouldn’t be the only time the artist collaborated with the show on music related ventures. Her relaxed and laid back tales disperse the many troubles of daily life by providing a soundtrack for the escape.
Kari Faux’s latest album, Primary, became available in September of 2017. HBO’s series, once again, tapped the songstress for inspiration, this time featuring her track, “Lowkey,” from her second studio album, which is fire per usual. If you’re active in the L.A. scene, you might have witnessed a dope DJ set by the artist as well.
Kari is currently on tour with Mic Jenkins.
Tierra Whack
Grammy-nominated artist Tierra Whack is the total embodiment of eccentricity, and it’s lit! Hailing all the way from North Philly, Tierra is known for her exuberant wardrobe, quick-witted lyricism, and superb command of a number of cadences. Her debut album, Whack World, released in May 2017, features 15 one minute tracks that flow effortlessly. To make matters that much more interesting, the 24-year old musician also crafted a visual for each song and compiled them into one gnarly fifteen minute and forty-eight seconds long adventure.
Tierra Whack toured with multi-genre producer Flying Lotus back in 2017. More recently, she joined 6lack on his world tour, From East Atlanta with Love. Now, the immensely talented act is up for a Grammy in the category of Best Music Video for the 2019 Grammy Awards, and we’re all rooting for her!
Leikeli47
This masked New York native hides her appearance so that fans will focus on the depth of her musical abilities, but Leikeli47’s uniqueness spans far beyond her iconic bandana printed ski mask. In an attempt to remove all creative limits, the artist is known for crafting a signature sound using whatever mock instruments she can find at the moment.
Leikeli47’s sound is like a collective neck roll to a boss chic’s anthem, encouraging listeners to enjoy some quality turn up time while rocking out to a rhymefest. Wash & Set, the artist’s first album, was released back in September 2017. Her latest project, Acrylic, delivers all the nouveau of a fly ass full set.
Like Leikeli47’s peer emcee Kari Faux, the lyricist has also had music featured on HBO’s series, “Insecure”, with original music on each season of the show’s run to date.
CHIKA
First known as the viral sensation who called Kanye West out via freestyle for turning his back on the culture, Jane Oranika, also known as CHIKA, bends the new generation’s rules of style and technique to meet her own demands. The 21-year old Nigerian American rapper, singer & songwriter hails from Alabama, and has made much noise spitting fire self-made rhymes over popular beats, in some instances giving rebuttals to other artist’s POV, as was the case with her cover of J. Cole’s “1985”.
If this femcee looks familiar and you still don’t know where to place her, you may have come across BET’s Hip-Hop Awards cypher last year, where she previewed a dope freestyle and likely became your new musical obsession. She’s even gained the support of a number of acts in the industry including Wale & Erykah Badu.
Check out CHIKA’s creative flips, spoken word, and live music on her socials & Soundcloud.

the moment I stop having fun with it, I’m done with it.
I feel like as humans, we limit ourselves creatively. It’s like if we feel we’re not good at something we don’t even try or we don’t try to improve. Our creations do not have to be shown off to the world. We can gate keep something’s and keep them to ourselves for our own pleasure. Our creativity does not have to be for monetary gain or attention.
Tap into your creativity. You don’t have to be an artist to draw or paint. You don’t have to hold a note in order to sing. You don’t need rhythm to dance and move your body. Just do it and let your inner child flow. Just do it and allow your creativity to flow. It’s so freeing and fulfilling.
Earlier this week, I wrote a freestyle rap just because. It’s terrible, but I had a blast writing it and it’s also funny. Today, I turned on some instrumentals on YouTube and freestyle’d while I sew’d. It was again terrible, but I had fun. It feels so free and fulfilling to be able to nurture my creativity & explore my creativity outside of designing and sewing. You never know what gift you may tap into your when you step outside your norm.
Today I affirm: My creativity is limitless. It has no boundaries. I create for my own enjoyment and pleasure. My creativity is my safe space. Outside opinions hold no value in my creative space.

Sing For You // Hong Jisoo
-
the prompts: (1) whenever I think of joshua i get this “boy next door” feel. but maybe have it where joshua or the reader has just moved to the neighborhood and the reader hears joshua play the guitar near his bedroom window and he starts to notice her and play songs that convey his feelings for her. (2) personally i would love a joshua scenario with a flirty josh and oblivious reader cuz!!!! why not!!!
words: 3834
category: fluff
author note: he’s not that flirty in this like maybe a subtle flirt. anyway this is for my older sister, for her graduation gift. I’m proud of you, you loser, and I hope you like this scenario. (good luck choosing between joshua and yuta now muahaha)

When you and your family moved into that ugly green two-story house at the end of a cul-de-sac, you assumed there would be no one your age to hang out with. It was the summer after you graduated high school, and you were pleased to spend it leisurely, doing nothing but catching up on the latest Netflix series available. You would start working as soon as the summer was over, and so your goal was to spend as much time as you could enjoying being lazy.
The bedroom you chose was at the end of the hall on the second floor, far away from your parents’ room. There, you could watch Netflix on your laptop day after day, without a care in the world at who was outside (or inside) of your house.
Your mother was sociable, and always on the prowl for new friends she could chat with. That’s how she found Mrs. Hong, who conveniently lived next door along with her son, Joshua.
To say Joshua Hong was cute would have to be the understatement of the century, since he was downright princely in every sense of the word. Luckily, his bedroom seemed to be right across the yard from yours, so you were able to see him from time to time whenever he opened his curtains. He never seemed to notice you when he sat on his window seat to play his guitar. Sometimes, he would crack open his window and you could hear the experimental twang of the strings as he learned new melodies and songs. That wasn’t very often, though.
Usually, Joshua had friends over, and they would play in the in-ground pool in his backyard. You found out he had handsome friends too, and lots of them. Sometimes they picked him up in a beaten up old van. It obviously didn’t fit thirteen boys, so you always watched in amusement as Joshua would squish into the trunk with a few other boys. They were a wild bunch, and loud. They were the soul reason you bought noise-canceling headphones.
Some days, when you didn’t feel like Netflix or the internet, you would watch Joshua and his friends hang out, since it was rather comical to see them playing around. Especially when they had sleepovers at Joshua’s place. Apparently they were fans of truth or dare, unless Joshua really did have a boyfriend named Yoon Jeonghan, as he had shouted out for the neighborhood to hear one night. That was the first time you ever heard him speak, funnily enough. His voice was soft.
Soon, Netflix became boring to you as July found it’s way into the year. You found yourself at your window seat more often than not, watching Joshua as he fiddled with his guitar. He was quieter alone, away from the the hustle and bustle that his friends offered. With his and your windows cracked open, you could hear his gentle voice as he sang a familiar song. Without realizing it, your eyelids began to droop as you leaned against the window pane. Joshua’s soft voice sang you to sleep that night.
-
“She is the sweetest thing that I know…“ Joshua sang, ”you should see the way she holds me when the lights go low. Shakes my soul like a pot hole, every—dang it!”
He exhaled in frustration as he once again messed up the simplest of chords. Where there was a D, he had played a C. He had never messed up something like guitar chords. He could play a song by ear if he wanted to, as he had been playing since he was in middle school.
He blamed you. Ever since you had moved in a few months ago and he saw you going out to collect mail, his mind hadn’t been the same. He found it cute how you would give the mailman a wide smile whenever he brought a package for you. Often times he didn’t even have to wonder very long what it was that you were so happy to receive, as you would open the package right there in the front yard. He got to see your interests, which mostly consisted of miscellaneous fandom merch or something even stranger like a box of food from who knows where. Although once, you received a tin of cookies and Joshua had considered introducing himself right there just to take a few of those chocolate chip treats home with him.
The point was, Joshua found you rather interesting and pretty, but he was too shy to actually strike up a conversation with you. His mother told him a lot about you, because according to your mother you were always watching Netflix shows or making strange conditions in the kitchen.
Joshua had the developing desire to keep learning about you. He wanted to know more about you, outside of your mother’s opinions and his observant assumptions. However, he wasn’t very outspoken when it came to girls. In fact, he barely even talked to them in high school. Even now, in college as a struggling music major, he didn’t really talk to girls. He was too shy and uninterested. He had his entire life to find someone that made his heart race. For now, he just wanted to hang out with his friends. Your moving right across from him sort of wrecked that plan, however, as now he found his heart racing every time he saw you outside.
As he repositioned his fingers to play the song again, he glanced out the window, towards your house. His curiosity for you was quenched when he realized your window was right across from him, and you were sleeping against the partly-open windowpane. He quirked a smile at your sleeping form.
Had you heard him singing? The thought flustered him, as he wasn’t sure he sounded good. Sometimes he just fooled around on his instrument, and it probably sounded stupid. He wondered how many times you had heard him singing his heart out to Ed Sheeran songs. Then, he cringed as he remembered his favorite activity to do when he felt bored was to freestyle his own raps for whatever reason. Perhaps you would find them funny. That would be a plus, right?
Whatever you had heard, Joshua was going to make sure you heard only the best songs from him. From then on, he kept a mental note that you could be listening to his songs.
-
You were awoken bright and early the next morning, to the usual legion of boys shouting and yelling.
Did they not know it was morning?
Splashing was quickly heard along with loud voices, so you sat up begrudgingly and looked at your phone. You groaned, Who went swimming at the crack of dawn, anyway?
They were disrupting your precious sleep, and so it was only logical that you would disrupt their precious fun. As desperate times call for desperate measures, you got out of your bed and grabbed the Nerf gun that lay in the messy underside of your bed. After finding a spare dart laying around, you crept over to your window seat and hid behind the decorative throw pillows you had set on the cushions. You pushed open your window and aimed for the first boy you saw near the pool: a tall, dark boy busy slathering sunscreen on his shoulders. You pulled the trigger and grinned as your target met it’s mark.
“Ow! Wh—” he turned around quickly, and locked eyes with you.
You squealed in alarm and ducked behind your cushions.
“Joshua! Your neighbor just shot me with a Nerf gun!”
“Really?“
You peaked your head over your throw pillow and watched as Joshua pushed himself out of his pool and walked closer to your house, his brows furrowed as he looked at your window. Then, he opened his mouth without a sort of Aha! expression. “It’s really early. My mom told me her parents were on a trip so I just assumed she was with them. We should keep quiet.”
You sighed in relief as all the boys seemingly agreed and got out to get some sun instead.
If you were honest, you might have watched the shirtless boys tan for just a bit longer before returning to your bed.
-
”Cause I know that I let you down, but is it to late to say I’m sorry now?“ Joshua strummed his guitar rather recklessly to the Justin Bieber song.
His thoughts were that if he couldn’t speak to you, then he could very well sing to you. At least from his bedroom. He still felt guilty for waking you up on a Saturday at six in the morning. So he thought of the only semi-apologetic song he knew the chords to. If that was Justin Bieber, it would have to do.
He could see you even now, with your head against the windowpane, listening to him. You seemed to be listening casually as you scrolled on your phone, occasionally stopping to double-tap. When he stopped singing and playing, he chuckled softly because you had peeked up and looked over to his window, wondering why his voice had cut off abruptly. He quickly put his head down and waited until you went back to your phone before he looked at you again.
Was there a sort of unspoken communication between you two? He would sing and you would just listen along?
Joshua bit his lip in thought as he mindlessly strummed random chords. Maybe he could sing for you every night.
Before he could begin another song, his mother called him to help her make dinner.
“Coming!”
He went downstairs into the kitchen, where his mother was busy tossing a salad. “Can you cook and cut the chicken for me?”
“Of course,” Joshua said, moving over to the fridge to grab the chicken.
“What happened this morning?” Mrs. Hong asked as they both worked together. “I was drinking my morning coffee, listening to you guys play in the pool and then all of a sudden all the noise just stopped.”
“Oh, well apparently Y/n didn’t go with her parents on that trip, and we woke her up. She shot Mingyu with a Nerf gun to let us know that we were being too loud.”
Mrs. Hong giggled and shook her head fondly. “Maybe you should invite her over. She might be lonely during dinner.”
Joshua groaned and turned to narrow his eyes at his mother, “Are you trying to set me up?”
“Maybe, maybe not.” Mrs. Hong shrugged her shoulders coyly, “but it would be nice for her to come over and you two to meet properly.”
“I don’t know…” Joshua mumbled, his ears turning pink at the thought that his mom might embarrass him before he got to even properly talk with you.
Mrs. Hong rolled her eyes. “I won’t bring out the baby pictures, just go and invite her over before she starts microwaving pizza pockets or something.”
“Yes, Ma'am,” Joshua sighed, making his way out the back door.
The walk from his house to yours felt rather slow for him. Especially since his legs seemed like lead, and his feet were dragging with anxiety as he thought of seeing you face to face.
He stood in front of your pea-green home and lifted his fist, knocking on the creaky screen door.
He heard quick footsteps from inside, and then the door was swung open. It was you, with a bright smile on your face until you saw him. Your smile quickly turned down in disappointment. “Oh. I thought you were the delivery man with my clothes.”
Joshua scratched the back of his head, “Ah… Sorry. I’m Joshua Hong from next door.”
“I know who you are,” you said sweetly. “I’m Y/n Y/l/n.”
“Yeah. Um, my mom wanted to know if you wanted to eat dinner with us? Since your parents are out and everything.”
“Oh!” You looked genuinely surprised. “I’m sorry, but I’m going out on a date with this guy from the mall. I don’t have his number to cancel or anything.”
“Don’t cancel!” Joshua said hastily, ignoring the frantic and nervous beating of his heart as he thought of you going on a date with someone else. “If you’re going on a date then go! Have fun,” he laughed awkwardly and turned on his heel, marching down the stairs towards his home.
He walked into the kitchen, his stomach turning as he saw his mother’s hopefully face. “Is she coming?”
“No,” Joshua sighed, going to take the chicken out of the oven. “She has a date.”
The two of them agreed not to talk about you any longer, as Mrs. Hong could sense the melancholic tone in her son’s voice. He was a bit hurt, but he wouldn’t mention it as he sat down to eat with his mother.
The two of them sat down and prayed before digging into their light dinner, easy conversation distracting Joshua from his worry about where you might be going and what you might be doing on your date.
The loud honking of a car suddenly jolted the two. Poor Joshua had been drinking water as it happened, and so he accidentally spilt some of it down his thin t-shirt.
“Go see what that is,” Mrs. Hong told him, her eyebrows furrowed in worry that there might’ve been an accident in their neighborhood.
Joshua obeyed and walked over to the window over the sink, dabbing his shirt with a paper towel as he did so. He peered out the window to see a sleek black car in your yard, honking. Suddenly your door opened and you came outside, your hair flying behind you as you ran over to the car.
“It’s her date,” Joshua informed his mom, “He didn’t even ring the doorbell.”
Mrs. Hong rushed over and tutted, shaking her head. “Where’d she pick him up?”
“The mall,” Joshua said spitefully. “What guy picks up girls at the mall anyway?”
Mrs. Hong patted him sympathetically on the shoulder. “Why don’t you go call it a night?”
“M'kay,” Joshua said softly. “Thanks Mom.”
-
You returned home later and tossed your bag onto your bed. You plopped into your window seat and sighed. Your date had been a jerk, and after flirting with the waitress, he had made you pay for the entire meal (which wasn’t any MacDonald’s by the way). After that, he tried to initiate a make out session in the front seat of his car, to which you politely declined.
You opened your window slightly, hoping to hear some of Joshua’s singing. You wished you had just stood the jerk up and stayed with Joshua and his mom. You were sure that dinner would’ve reaped more benefits than the one you had been on.
You heard the sweet melodies of a Shawn Mendes song, followed by Joshua’s soft voice. ”‘Cause I know I can treat you better than he can, and any girl like you deserves a gentleman…“
You suddenly looked up and met Joshua’s gaze for a second before he finally looked away, still singing.
Had he played that song for you? Did he know that it was a botched date or was the song just a coincidence?
Either way, you grabbed a blanket and curled up in your window seat, letting Joshua’s voice lull you to sleep.
-
The next few weeks were rather quiet, save for Joshua’s nightly songs. Each night was a different love song, and you liked to listen to them as you feel asleep, imagining he was singing to you. It wasn’t like the two of you hadn’t ever talked, but the words were nothing more than greetings from him, and occasionally his friends, when they saw you outside.
Your parents had returned, yet they were still put most of the time, working. You spent the morning cleaning up the house, and had finished well before noon. Out of boredom, you decided to make cookies.
After a few hours, you were surrounded by cookies and cookie dough, your music blaring loudly with whatever random Spotify playlist you had chosen. In your excitement, you hadn’t realized that you had made literally fifteen dozen chocolate chip cookies, and there was no way to eat them all.
Your thoughts were interrupted by the sound of yelling and hollering outside. The boys! You could give them each a dozen to take home and you’d still have two dozen left.
With that decided, you put the cookies in individual ziplock bags and stuffed them all in one of your mother’s oversized grocery bags. You turned off your phone and pocketed it before leaving the house.
The boys were all near the pool again, as they had been since the early morning when you started your chores. With a few steps, you were outside the pool gate, opening the latch and letting yourself into what looked to be an intense chicken-fight competition. There were nine boys standing at the pool edge with their backs to you. They hadn’t noticed your presence, as they were too busy cheering on the four boys in the pool. You snuck beside one of them to see Joshua sitting on the shoulders of the boy you had shot with a Nerf gun just a couple of month ago. His hands were linked with another boy’s, and they both were straining to push the other off.
In the excitement of the other boys’ cheering, you played along. "Go Joshua! Take him down!”
Joshua froze at your voice, allowing the other boy to shove him into the water. Each of the boys turned to look at you, and the one in the pool was the first to speak, “It’s Nerf girl!”
Joshua resurfaced and pushed his bangs off his forehead. “Y/n?”
“Hi, Joshua,” you said with an awkward wave.
The boy you had shot spoke again, “Don’t think you’ve gotten out of the punishment, Shua. Jeonghan won so he gets to flick your forehead.”
All of the boys agreed, and so Joshua and the other three boys pushed themselves out of the pool. Joshua walked over to the towels and quickly wrapped one around his shoulders before making his way towards you. “What are you doing here?”
You shrugged and held up the bag. “I made too many cookie so I thought I would share. There’s a bag for each of you.”
Suddenly, Joshua’s punishment was forgotten as each of the boys scrambled to get their bag of cookies. They each thanked you, but you could hardly reply after seeing their handsome faces up close. When there was only one bag left, you pulled it out and handed it to Joshua with a soft smile. “Here you go.”
“Thanks, Y/n.” Joshua scratched the back of his head, “Do you want to come swimming?”
The thought of Joshua seeing you in your swimsuit made you blush, but it was hot outside and you were bored. “Sure. Let me go get my swimsuit.”
-
Joshua thought his ears were going to absolutely burn from the heat that crept up them. Your bathing suit made you look even more stunning, and Joshua was finding it hard not to stare as you smiled and laughed with the other boys. Everyone was taking a break to eat their cookies, which were no longer separated by dozens, but instead passed around and mixed up until nearly all of them were gone by you and the thirteen hungry boys.
“So, what’s it like living next to our Joshua?” Jeonghan asked you with a smirk as he leaned back into the lawn chair.
Joshua groaned, a cookie in his hand. “Guys… don’t bother her.”
“It’s okay,” you answered Jeonghan, ignoring Joshua’s pleas. “When you guys aren’t waking me up, that is. Actually, when you guys aren’t over at all, it’s quite pleasant.”
Jeonghan rose his eyebrows, “Hear that, Shua? She likes it when you’re the only one home.”
“That’s not what she meant—” Joshua started, but he was quickly cut off by all the boys’ suggestive cooing.
“Leave him alone,” you said, your own cheeks aflame.
Joshua found it endearing that you were sticking up for him. In fact, as the day progressed, and he talked more with you, he felt absolutely enamored with you to the point where he wasn’t sure he could hold it in any longer.
-
After you showered and cleansed all of the chlorine off of your body, you made your way to the window seat. As you dried your hair with a towel, you listened for Joshua’s song through your cracked window, ”Leave this blue neighborhood, never knew loving could hurt this good, oh, and it drives me wild. ‘Cause when you look like that, I’ve never ever wanted to be so bad, oh, it drives me wild. You’re driving me wild, wild, wild…“
The thought that he could be singing to you crossed your mind yet again, and before you could stop yourself, you pushed open your window and hung your head out. "Hey, Joshua!”
Having been staring at his guitar, he jumped when you called his name. The song stopped abruptly, and Joshua turned to see your head out of your window. “Yeah?”
You sent him a smile, “Can I ask you something?”
Joshua opened his own window all the way so he could hear you better. As he retuned his guitar to keep his nervous fingers occupied, he replied, “Shoot.”
“Are you playing those songs for me, or is it just a coincidence?”
Joshua’s eyes widened as he realized that you had caught on to his act. He cleared his throat, “A–Anyway, here’s Wonderwall.”
As he played his new song, he heard your laugh as it echoed across the way. “Joshua, stop! I wanna talk to you!”
Reluctantly, Joshua did stop. “Yeah. Okay, well, I guess I like you but I didn’t actually know how to convey it. I was sort of hoping my songs would charm you into liking me too.”
You smiled brightly, “Oh, they did. Especially those freestyle raps you sang about how much you wanted tacos.”
Joshua laughed nervously. “You heard that?”
“Yeah,” you answered, “It was cute, though.”
Joshua stared at your confident smile for another moment before biting his lip. “Would you like to go on a date with me tomorrow night?”
“I would love to, as long as you’ll keep singing for me. I expect a rap about how much you enjoyed our date as well.”
“You got it,” Joshua said. “Any requests before I head in for the night?”
You hummed in thought before replying, “How about Can’t Help Falling In Love by Elvis?”
Joshua’s cheeks turned pink. “Oh. That’s a good one. Okay. Right. Cool. Let’s go.”
He began to sing, and once again you curled into your window seat, listening to his soft voice conveying not only your feelings, but his own as well.

Super Future & Wreckno Discuss Their ‘Hypernatural’ Self-Expression Breakthrough [INTERVIEW]
Once upon a time, two rising producers by the names of Super Future and Wreckno got together and dreamed up a vibrant, collaborative concept called Hypernatural. Ideas fluttered about in their heads and soon came a distinct sound, then a full-on tour — and now, we’d consider Hypernatural its own damn movement.
Busy as they may be taking the bass music world by storm, we caught up with Super Future and Wreckno to get the scoop on their much hyped about Hypernatural project and what it means to them. This is as wholesome as it gets, because these real-life besties are devoted to bringing you that heavy shit just how you like it.
Hypernatural started as a spark of an idea (on acid)…
For me, Hypernatural as a theme has been evolving for me. At first it was an idea that didn’t have a name that I received at Electric Forest deep into an acid trip at an Ekali set. Some visuals I was seeing were ranging from animal fur, to butterfly wings, to vibrant reptile scales and feathers… but all colored like a dope Lisa Frank book… — Super Future
And evolved into something bigger than itself…
Hypernatural to me is something that all of us have the capability to be… that bad bitch you envision yourself as coming to life via sound. That’s what it is for me. A stepping out party for this bad bitch I always knew was inside me and now has the floor whenever you’re tuning into these 4 tracks. — Wreckno
After much creative deliberation, Hypernatural was defined (but feel free to make it your own).
Hypernatural: The highest degree of expressing one’s natural self, in what ever form one chooses.

Super Future: The sound I wanted to use this inspiration with didn’t come to life until I saw my first Wreckno set and I was like, “OH SHIT SHE LIKES THAT SASSY BASS!!” I had song ideas flowing over the next few nights and that’s where “BOUT ME” was born back in April. We kept in touch because I really wanted to tap into this energy he has in his sets and transform it into music… that kinda tends to happen too, music is created as an extension of the vibes you curate in a DJ set I think. So as Brandon decided to try rapping more, I was more encouraged to write beats for it! We ended up trying to show people this energy for the first time at a big afterparty in Detroit and when he did the live rap the crowd LOST ITTT. We had to keep this music theme going!
When it came tome to decide on a tour theme and name to accompany all the music we kept making together, I remembered the trip I had back at Forest for the theme, and it felt like THIS felt like nature, but beyond what normal nature is. Jungle sounds, weird noises, wild lyrics and sassy bass music energy… to me, it was a self-expression revolution that had to be part of the whole theme! From there, we tied Hypernatural to our theme, which we decided it means: “The highest degree of expressing one’s natural self, in what ever form one chooses.”
Wreckno: So, I’d say my version of Hypernatural’s sound and what it means to me… it’s limitless and powerful. If you listen to each track, none of them sound the same in my opinion. At least in regards to bass music. I’m extremely proud of that part. Ummm personal side note for me, this EP means so much more than just putting content out. I have been writing raps since I was 16 and I actually wrote the rap for signal when I was 16 in Manistee, Michigan. I was technically “Wreckno” already but not really. I wrote that just to create, for the sake of creating. It became a freestyle that I engrained in my brain and would pull out at parties lol… to finally see it get its shine is legit monumental to me. Nick has been so instrumental in me getting to actually become the artist/performer I want to be because of his willingness to include my vocal ideas. I haven’t had that with anyone else I’ve worked with so far.
Upcoming Hypernatural Tour Dates
