Happy Saturday everyone. I always forget Eric’s wife had a spot on the show. Every time I get to this episode its a reminder. Also fair warning he’s gonna make me extra feral in this one. He is in a suit and yummy street clothes in this episode. Gimme gimme all day. I blame Eric for all my reactions in this ep for how he looks haha This is also a shorter review like last time but good stuff in it none the less. Off we go.
2x16 The Overnight
We start off with our lovely ship at American Idol auditions. A guy is getting arrested giving out meth smoothies. Lucy has to go back for his backpack. As she does she gets roped into an audition because it has his audition sticker. I’m surprised there wasn’t a gif set of her singing. It's such a good scene. I did my quick made one above with my phone. But a really good set should be produced. We get to hear Melissa’s wonderful voice again. It's in a much better context this time. Not a soul crushing and depressing way. She chooses a song from Aretha Franklin. 'I never loved a man'. She CRUSHES it.
I hope she gets another opportunity to showcase her voice in the future. The ending of this cold open cracks me up so much. The judges are impressed by her audition. Ready to give her that coveted golden ticket. Lucy hears Tim’s voice and bolts LOL Him bringing her back to reality. Their 'No no no' is so damn funny as she runs towards Tim. I love it so much. Tim having no idea what just happened. Thinking she's just running behind for no reason. Such a great cold open.
I love this scene for quite a few reasons. First and most importantly we get Tim Bradford in a suit. Sweet baby James. What a visual to start off the episode with. I need more this is my life. He should go to court more often. Honestly should be illegal to be that damn fine. *fans self* Second I find it very sexy he donates blood so often. I mean of course he does. To quote Lucy. Most Tim Bradford thing I've ever heard heh Tim as a person is just so friggin attractive.
Lastly I adore Nyla giving him a hard time. Doesn't waste a second before calling him a machine LOL Tim's face in that third gif is too cute. He's commending her shot and only shakes his head. How far Tim and Nyla have come. Reached a playful joking stage I love it. You know Lucy is enjoying someone else giving Tim crap. The proud wifey smirk of hers when he gets tossed his ball. I love them.
Lucy is running the front desk since Tim is off at court. She meets a reporter Valerie Castillo from the Herald asking for public arrest reports. She is looking for a scoop on recent robberies at 5 star hotels. Asking if Lucy has heard about them? Lucy says no. Valerie goes on to say she is trying to get away from Hollywood stories. Do something more impactful. So she can be taken seriously as a journalist. Lucy being her empathetic self wants to help her out. Lets her know the reports she’s looking at don’t have enough info. Tells her she wants CAD reports instead. Valerie asks what those are?
Tim comes striding in with the answer. Looking like sex on a stick in that suit. Good lord he can wear the hell out of that thing. Look at that fit on him. Thank you to his tailor. *chef's kiss* But I digress…Tim is clearly not a fan of this woman and what she is asking of Lucy. His cop gut going off and not liking this interaction at all. Tim instantly distrusts her and doesn't hide it.
Does crack me up they wrote Ros in as a character he can’t stand LOL I’m sure they had fun with this. Tim clearly doesn’t like the media especially her paper. Says her paper has a bias against cops. She bites back ‘Like the bias you have against me?’ She’s not wrong ha Tim says that's cute but isn't buying what she's selling.
Tim tells Lucy to get those reports back from her ASAP. That they’re gonna hit the streets as soon as he’s changed. Ooh lord the way he unbuttons his jacket and barks out his instructions on the move. Mercy. It shouldn't be that hot and yet here I am always a puddle. Ever the model just as much walking away as he came in. My god he's attractive haha It's truly not fair. Valerie says Tim shouldn't talk to her like that. Lucy is bemused by this statement.
Says he's her T.O. and its just his style with a smile on her face. (We all know she loves his style heh) I do love how this scene finishes out. Valerie saying ‘If ass is a style...but he sure can wear a suit’. Indeed madam indeed. Then proceeds to watch him leave LOL Checking out her own husband as he exits the scene haha Cracks me up. He does look damn fine in that suit. I can not blame her.
Tim instantly tries to steer Lucy away from Valerie. Telling her she’s bad news. Saying reporters always have an agenda. Lucy tries to be snarky and replies 'To get truth? Sounds Horrible.' Tim continues on despite her snark and says they aren’t to be trusted. Lucy being her sunshine self wants to see the good in Valerie. That she’s doing this to help the victims of these robberies. Tim thinks she’s being naive with this woman. Lucy battles back he just doesn’t trust anyone. Well that’s not true. He most definitely trusts you Lucy. With his life. But she has earned it ten fold out of him which is why she has it.
I’m with Tim on this one.(No surprise there I know ) That trust is something to be earned. I am the same way. It’s not something I just hand out like candy either. You have to prove to me you are worthy of that trust. Once you're in you're gold but you have to earn it first. He knows how trusting Lucy is and he doesn't want her to get burned by this person. This is his way of watching her back and trying to protect her from a potential disaster. Lucy doesn't heed his warning and it shows in her sassy face she gives him above. Lucy is so sure she is the right one in this situation. Like she is humoring him by listening.
They get a report of this idiot trying to use his snake to get out of paying for his car repairs. He pulls it out as a threat and It backfires pretty badly. As he waves the snake it bites him... (Like I said an idiot) I adore Lucy taking command of this situation. Also her heart for any living creature. I’m not a snake girl myself but I do love her taking the snake's side over this guy’s haha
This is our marriage scene of the episode. Tim says EMTs won’t step foot in here till the snake is neutralized. Tim says he’ll flush it out and kill it. Lucy is against this plan and tells Tim he can’t kill it. Their banter in this scene is primo. He is sassy right back asking what are they gonna do? Snuggle it? LOL Lucy ignores his sassy jab as she hops down and decides to do something herself. Tim isn't a fan of this plan since the snake is venomous.
Tim looks very concerned as he watches her. The way he raises his gun ready to destroy this thing if it goes after her. I love his face as she talks to the snake. Calling it by it's name, telling it she isn't going to hurt it haha He is wondering what she’s going to do with this thing. Then is impressed af when she traps the snake in a tire. What a bad ass moment for her. Snake whisperer can now go on her list of skills on the job ha Lucy proudly walks back to him with the best reply ‘Not his fault his owner is an idiot.' LOL I love this.
Valerie catches Lucy on the way out for the night. Claims she got her story about a Murphy scam. Rich men hiring sex workers then the sex worker has a partner. They rob and steal from them. The victim can’t report the crime without copping to their own. Says she came by to thank Lucy with a drink. (Mmhmm....)
Lucy is hesitant and says she shouldn’t…. You know that cop gut of hers is telling her it's wrong. Valerie asks 'Is it cause Tim wouldn't approve?' Lucy looks behind her like she can sense Tim’s disapproval from afar. Valarie sweetens the pot telling her she can be her inside person. Lucy concedes and decides to go. This can only end badly Lucy….
They make it to the hotel and Lucy quickly realizes they’re not there for a just a drink. Valerie has tracked one of the women who’s been scamming these men. Lucy is upset and feels betrayed. Says she can’t arrest people on her own. She’s a rookie. Valerie notices the man being scammed is a big time movie producer. Says this will get her a killer story and her a high profile arrest. You can see the regret written all over Lucy’s face.
Lucy tells Valerie she is texting Tim. I love this. She knows she’s in over her head at this point. So she is going to reach for her lifeline. Tells Valerie as such letting her know she could get fired as a rookie. That she needs a senior officer on scene. Also she really needs him to rein this in TBH. This has gotten way out of hand and needs Tim to come help her.
Tim arrives and Lucy thanks him for coming. (Like he wasn’t going to come and bail his girl out.) Doesn’t even have to say I told you so. This entire moment is doing it for him really. Lucy doesn’t fight or deny the hot water she is in. Not even a little. Just says ‘I’m in trouble aren’t I?’ His sexy Mm-hmm will do just fine for her. You know she’s just so relieved he's there to get her out of this. To save her from herself in this moment. The way she looks at him like he is her saving grace. Makes my heart happy. Doesn't even care she is in trouble just relieved he is there. So much said in such a small scene.
He looks sinfully handsome in that denim jacket *oh my lord.* Valerie says she’ll write a story about Tim if he punishes Lucy for this. Lucy panics and tells her not to do that. Tim isn’t phased at all by her intimidation of a story. The cocky way he walks into the room. Takes control of the situation. Says the cup against the wall trick doesn’t work. You know Lucy is rooting him on while he does this. Tim makes a joke about there being an app for that. Valerie believes him cause he walks in so confident and says that so damn smoothly. She can't help but reply 'Really?'
The way he says ‘No’ to her LMAO I'm dying. He is having a little fun in this moment messing with her. I love this man so much. Why is he so damn attractive in this moment? I actually know why ha. He's protecting Lucy and trying to do damage control at the same time. Also by taking control back from Valerie, by putting this situation back in his court. Tim calls in backup to help them if the accomplice even shows up. Tells Valerie she’ll be far away from the action if it comes to that. Not gonna let her get her story after potentially endangering Lucy for it.
The accomplice ends up arriving and Valerie has a ‘See’ look on her face. Thinking she is validated in all she's done to this point. Getting to watch Tim in action and in street clothes? Don’t mind if I do. They’re about to go after the guy when they notice Valerie is missing. She’s gone out on the balcony to get a photo. Clearly back tracking on her 'Killer Story' that'll get her taken seriously for a paparazzi shot instead.
She ends up getting her shot on the balcony but slips and Tim has to rescue her. She is refusing to let go of her phone as she hangs on to the railing. Lucy tells her to let the damn thing go. The guy sees them rescue her and takes off. Tim gets her up and takes off after the guy. Leaving Lucy with Valerie while he does so. This is the last we see of our handsome hero him in this ep sadly. The accomplice ends up getting arrested by a grumpy and tired Lopez in the lobby of the hotel LOL
Lucy’s SL wraps up with Valerie signing her statement. I love Lucy telling her like it is. Letting her know how wrong it was to take advantage like she did. Lucy is inclined to trust people and it bit her in the ass this time. (What he was trying to protect her from.) Unfortunately for her Tim was right on this one. She did have an agenda. Tim didn’t rub it in her face but also didn’t say she wasn’t in trouble for it haha Lucy has a mic drop moment with her. Telling her instead of going for the serious story she sold her on she went for the cheap shot. Gets up and walks away from her. Boom. Once again not a ton to content but still enough goodies ❤️
That wraps up 2x16 for our ship. Thanks as always to you all for your likes/comments and reblogs. Forever appreciate them. Can't believe we're almost done with S2. 6 left to review in this one.

Side notes- Non Chenford
Always enjoy Nyla’s SL’s. When I first watched this ep wanted her to her back with Donovan. But glad she didn't much better fit with James but we’ll meet him later down the road.
Wopez engagement ❤️ They so cute. I love them. Happy for Angela and Wes.
See you all in 2x17 :)

May 11-15, 2023:
I was heading to Washington, D.C.! I was going to celebrate my friend, Hallie’s five year anniversary of being seizure free! She has epilepsy. On Thursday, May 11, I went down to Seattle to stay the night with Tara, before my 2pm flight on Friday. It always makes me feel better, staying closer to the airport, the night before. We went and picked up dumplings (it’s a tradition to get Chinese dumplings when I visit because we don’t have anything like that in Bellingham!) and enjoyed them back at her apartment. We hung out for a while and stayed up too late talking, then went to bed.
I slept until 10 or so on Friday, and left for the airport around 11:30. I drove myself to Master Park to leave my car, easily made it through security, then went to the American Express lounge. They had upgraded and moved their space! It was really beautiful and had a coffee shop inside! I had a few drinks there, then got ready and hopped on my flight. My flight was supposed to be leaving at 2, landing in D.C. around 10, where I was going to meet Hallie and her friends at Howl at the Moon, a fun bar with performers!
However, after taking off for D.C., about a half hour into the flight, we had to turn back to Seattle! I guess there was a mechanical issue. We landed back in Seattle and I hung around the gate until our new flight was updated. We had to wait until 9:55 to take off now! Wow, I was not happy! But, what can you do? I went back to the American Express lounge and just spent the next few hours there, having some drinks and food, and watching my shows. I told Hallie what was happening and she felt so bad! I wasn’t going to make it to Howl at the Moon, but instead I would go directly to Hallie’s when I landed.
When I got on my flight, I tried to snooze and relax, but that’s harder said than done on a flight. I arrived in D.C. around 6am, Saturday. I went to Hallie’s and she let me in, then went back to bed. I slept a few hours, then got ready to go to brunch. I was tired but that was okay!
Saturday was all about celebrating Hallie and her five years without a seizure! Hallie’s friend Lizzie was also staying at Hallie’s, so the three of use spent a lot of time together which was fun! We went to brunch at a place Hallie liked, and met up with about 15 other friends and family members there to support Hallie. I sat with her mom, Jeanne, and stepdad, John, because I actually didn’t know many other people. I had a great time chatting and meeting all of Hallie’s friends. She has some really cool people in her life! I was lucky to get invited!
After brunch, Hallie’s friend Megan drove me back to Hallie’s. I was fading fast, so I took a few hour nap, while Hallie and Lizzie hung out with friends. That was needed! When they got back to Hallie’s apartment, we hung out for a bit, then got ready for the party! She had rented out a really cool space of a bar she liked, on the rooftop! She provided some shots and yummy finger food, and then everyone bought their drinks. We had a great night celebrating Hallie and her health! Megan had brought some props and it was just a really fun evening! A smaller group of friends and her parents went to a beer hall after the bar, which was also a blast!
The following day, Sunday, was a great day. We met up with some of her friends and got breakfast tacos and coffee, then walked around her neighborhood for a bit. That evening we went to a Georgian restaurant. (Georgia the country, not the state! The country I visited in 2017!) Hallie and her parents ordered everything family style and the food was so good—the wine, too! We met up with some other friends (and Drew, who would become her boyfriend, later) at Franklin Hall, the same beer hall from the night before. It was a really fun day! Hallie has friends who are really easy to be around.
Monday the 15th is as a really fun day! I got breakfast with Hallie and her parents, then went to the Holocaust museum. It was my second visit to this very important museum (I went back in 2019 when I visited Hallie for the first time). It isn’t “fun” to go to the museum, but I think it’s very important to learn about the horrible atrocities of the Holocaust. After the Holocaust museum, I took an Uber over to the National Museum of African American History. I met up with Hallie and her parents there and we spent an hour and a half or so exploring the museum. It was great to spend so much time with Hallie and Jeanne and John—they are really great people!
I left Hallie and her parents at the museum, and took myself to a baseball game! D.C. has the National team as their MLB and I bought a single ticket to a game against The New York Mets. I took an Uber to Nationals Park and had to check my purse in a locker. I explored the field and bought some merch for Dad and Ingvar, and myself. I met a really nice father and son couple, traveling around the East Coast and checking out MLB games in every city. I had a hot dog, a beer, and also an iced mocha (I think it was my first ever coffee at a baseball game?). The Nationals won the game!
After the game, I walked a few blocks away and met up with my former coworker, Brooke! She lives in D.C. now, but we used to work at Red Robin! For multiple years. She suggested a resultant and we met there. It was super nice to catch up with her—she had left Bellingham a few years prior. We had some yummy Mexican food, then I convinced her to go with me and meet up with Hallie, her parents, and Drew. We Ubered across town and met up with them in the same bar that we had drank at the night before (not Franklin Hall, though). Hallie and Brooke had never met! They both worked at Red Robin, but not during the same time. We spent the evening chatting and hanging out, then Hallie and I went back to her place for bed.
I had an early flight home on Tuesday, so I got up early and left for the airport around 6:30. I hugged Hallie goodbye, then took my flight from Washington, D.C. to Dallas. I snoozed a bit on the flight, listened to music, and blogged. My layover was just over an hour so I didn’t do much besides find my new flight. My next flight was about four and a half hours, and then I was in Seattle! I picked up my car at Master Park around 3:30, then drove home. I had a great trip, even with my eight hour flight delay, but was excited to get home to Ingvar! :]

Fictober22 Day 7 — "Check that again, are you sure?"
featuring Carla Carlyle & Danica Franklin — characters from The New Ashton Chronicles, written & role-played by F.R. Southerland (@normallyxstranger | @frsoutherlandauthor | www.frsoutherland.com) © October 2022
original fiction
general warnings: strong language, alcohol use, drug mention
Fuck, Danica had a sweet apartment.
She made that good money working as a bartender at Shockwaves, plus the tips she got from flirting with rich customers. Then there was the whole modeling thing. That had to draw in a pretty penny. No wonder she had such a nice place, with a big open floor plan. And that kitchen!
“I think I could live in this kitchen,” Carla said, hefting herself onto one of the stools at the island. “It feels bigger than my entire place.” She eyed the cleanliness of the counters, the empty sink, how everything seemed untouched or unused. “You know, I could move in here. You don’t ever eat so you never even use it.”
Danica rolled her eyes, bringing up one slender, tan finger to flip her off. “I eat. Don’t start with me.”
“I know, I know.”
Carla had always been envious of anyone who could eat a ton and stay skinny, like Danica. She was slim, hardly more than skin and bones, but it worked for her when it came to her modeling. Apparently, people liked that standard of beauty more than they did Carla, with her few extra pounds, bubble butt, and ample curves. Oh well, it didn’t stop her from eating and that’s precisely what they were both here to do. A much needed Girls Night In.
Leaning over, Carla hefted her tote bag onto the island, glass clinking when the bottles of booze she’d brought jostled together. Danica watched her, placing a hand on her hip, bracelets jingling. She had her hair up in bantu knots, which made it look like she had a crown around her head. With her thick eye-liner and bronzed skin, she looked like some goddamn queen. “Don’t just stand there. You might be all high and mighty, Your Highness, but you best help me.”
“That’s right—I’m royalty, bitch. Don’t you forget it.” Danica smirked back at her, playfully stuck out her tongue, then started to help unpack Carla’s bag. “What’d you get for us tonight?”
“Only the best, Your Majesty. I got whiskey, rum, and vodka. And, oh, and a few bottles of red wine. You think that’s enough?”
“It’s a start.” Playfully, she gave Carla’s head a little pat. “My good and faithful servant.”
Wrinkling her nose at the banter and the ruffling of her bangs, Carla went on. “I also got some brownie mix.” She pulled out the box, waving it before passing it to her friend. “All we have to do is add water, bake, and voilà!—yumminess!”
“Hmm.” Danica had the box turned over, reading the directions on the back, one manicured nail tapping. “This says you need eggs, oil, and water.”
Carla blinked. “Wait—what? Check that again, are you sure?”
“Positive.”
“Okay, so it’s just a few more steps.” She waved it off, twisting the cap off the bottle of vodka. “Even better.”
“Yeah, except I don’t have any eggs.”
“What? How do you not have eggs?”
“Because, according to you, I don’t eat. Remember?”
"What the fuck?" Well, that put a wet blanket on their night. Carla downed a big swig straight from the bottle. “Mm, okay, that sucks. So what do we do? I really want those fucking brownies.” She took another drink, directing a glare at the brownie box. How dumb was she that she didn’t read the damn directions first? “Hey, can’t you use your powers? Conjure up some eggs or brownies? Save the trouble of baking them?”
Danica passed her a look. “No, because conjuring foodstuffs is never as good as the real thing. Besides, I’m already running on a good cocktail of coke and muscle relaxers. My powers are null and void until I sober up.”
“Aww.” That was disappointing. Danica’s power to create anything from her imagination would’ve been damn convenient. She wouldn’t push it though. “I guess we’re going out to grab some eggs or something.” One for the road, she thought, taking another big swig from the bottle.
“Fuck going out.” Danica took the bottle from Carla, helped herself to a big sip, then handed it back. She had her phone in her hand a half-second later. “I’m ordering some shit. Pizza, with cheese sticks. And a pan of brownies.”
Carla’s face pulled into a big grin. “That’s what I’m talking about! Fuck baking.” She was gonna be good and buzzed in a little bit. Probably for the best they didn’t have the oven going. “Ya know what? Make it two brownies.”
“Yep. Got it.”

Roll call: Men in Uniform
It has recently come to my attention that I have a history of crushing on men in uniform. I mean, really, who doesn't love a man in uniform. So here's a fairly chronological list of my hotties of choice.
1. Lt. James Brody - seaQuest DSV/2032 (played by Edward Kerr)
Ok, this was like my first ever big crush. I was very young, and everyone assumed I was watching seaQuest for Jonathan Brandis, the more age appropriate 16 year old cutie, and Darwin the talking dolphin (ok, I loved Darwin). But Naw, I was all like, who's that guy who is damn near 30 and thus well over twice my age. He was cocky, sarcastic and had that perfect 90s hair and sharp jaw. He walked around in that blue jumpsuit uniform handling weapons and kicking ass. This it seems, is where this all started. Having looked him up now, he's totally a silver fox. So good on me for kicking off puberty with good tastes.
Honourable mention goes to Chief Miguel Ortiz (Marco Sanchez), who was also way too old for me and filled out that uniform in excellent fashion.
2. Captain Li Shang - Mulan (voiced by B.D. Wong)
This one is less about the uniform and more about the… lack of uniform during the training montage. I was still kinda young when this came out which aligns with the fact he's animated. Still, I knew i wanted him to make a (wo)man out of me even if I didn't fully understand what that entailed. I also just wanted to BE Mulan in general. And this man who can kick ass and command an army (but is also totally soft) was my man of choice.
3. Lt. Tom Paris - Star Trek Voyager (played by Robert Duncan McNeill)
Here's another pretty boy lieutenant who is a little too charming and funny for my own good. Even the actor admits the character started off as a bit of a cringy misogynist, but when my girl B'Elanna stole his heart he got whipped into shape and those 2 are my otp. Less fighty than the other entries on this list, and more pyjama style uniform clad, I'm still a total softie for this guy.
4. Medic Eugene "Doc" Roe - Band of Brothers (played by Shane Taylor)
Not as high up in the ranks, but still a take charge kind of guy (he really tells off some officers for not acting like adults at one point). He's just so. He's so. Look, the context of this one is a factual war drama, so it's not about the shoot 'em up fiction I otherwise go for. Eugene as portrayed in the mini series is complex and sensitive and his episode (Bastogne) broke my heart into a million pieces. It sent me into a year long obsession with this series and I still take comfort in it when things are really bad.
Honourable mention goes to almost literally every other notable character in the show. I'm not even kidding, ya know when your crushing spreads through a fandom like wildfire? There's a cast of literally hundreds and I fell in love with like half. But Major Richard Winters (Damian Lewis) and Captain Lewis Nixon (Ron Livingston) deserve special mention 'cuz they are yummy and I named my mice after them.
5. Colonel Horacio Carrillo - Narcos (played by Maurice Compte)
The man of the hour (according to tumblr I've been screaming about this man since March 2019). If you're reading this, you know Horacio. The walking dichotomy of moral righteousness and merciless killer. He's hard for his job and soft for his wife (that's canon people!) in a way that is so easy to spin a fantasy about. I want to be his wife who clearly can't do laundry properly 'cuz her husband's uniform keeps shrinking. I want to cook him dinner, sit on his lap, and brush lightly at his neck. I want the way he handles firearms with intention and skill to be how he handles me in the bedroom. I want… I just want.
Here are a few honourable mentions to round out the pretty:
Billy Russo - The Punisher (played by Ben Barnes)
Captain Steve Rogers - Captain America (played by Chris Evans)
Captain Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce - M*A*S*H (played by Alan Alda)
I don't think I could handle a military man in real life. Just not my jam. But give me a fictional man in uniform and I'll think of the fastest way to take him out of one.
So, who would you add to the list? Who are your favourites? I wanna know!
Tagging people 'cuz y'all don't play otherwise: @nicke0115 @1zashreena1 @heresathreebee @allthingsnarcos @xxidontwikeitxx @lettherebrelight @xxsteph-enrixx @fleurfatale89 @kid-from-new-zealand @chensingmachinee @criminal-cookies @allalngthewtchtower @ntlmundy @paniclana @ anyone else who wants to play

anonsally replied to your post “Today we are going birdwatching. I mean, more than usual.”
post a report!
We came, we saw, we listed.
The final tally for the 11th annual Carpinteria CBC was 155 species found by roughly 75 humans. That’s 3 species short of our all-time high of 158, and quite respectable, I think, given that our pelagic excursion was cancelled due to gale warnings in the Santa Barbara Channel and the afternoon sweep-up-the-birds crew was hampered by the strong winds.
It was my second year running things, and I learned a lot (again). I’m kicking myself about some of the common species we missed: no Rock Wren, no Red-winged Blackbird, no Sanderling, no Dunlin. If I’d done a better job of organizing we could have beaten our record.
But there were some definite highlights. I hiked up Romero Canyon in the dark and recorded the vocalizations of our only Western Screech Owl, and then, just as it was getting light, made a recording of (mostly) wind noise through which you can faintly hear the toots of our only Northern Pygmy-Owl.
Mario hiked up the Franklin Trail before sunrise and got what I believe is only the second Green-tailed Towhee reported in the county this year. (I’m heading up there tomorrow to see if it’s still there.) Patrick, birding on private property on the northern edge of the Carpinteria valley, got the first Painted Redstart recorded in Santa Barbara County in years. Craig and Jenny delivered the Costa’s Hummingbird they’d had staked out for weeks, and Glenn got the Northern Waterthrush in Carp Creek.
And the compilation dinner was fun. My partner in crime organized catered Italian food, which was yummy, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
I’m glad it’s done for the year; organizing 75 birdwatchers to do a 15-mile-diameter big day is no joke, at least for an introvert like me. But it’s also kind of exhilarating to be part of a one-day effort on that scale. I’m doing two more CBC’s this cycle; Cachuma on December 27 and Santa Barbara on January 4. But those are just birdwatching, which is fun; someone else has to do the work. :-)

TASK 001: CHARACTER QUIRKS
go-to karaoke song? Ok, well, this depends completely on my mood. But like, I guess the standards for me will always be Respect by Queen Aretha Franklin, Killing Me Softly by the Fugees, Britney’s Toxic and the newest addition: Truth Hurts by the Goddess Lizzo. Sometimes if no one stops me, I’ll sign up for like six songs in a row and turn karaoke night into my own mini concert.
favorite frozen custard flavor from custard’s last stand? Strawberry Shortcake, hands down. The yummy vanilla custard mixed with the delicious strawberries and that perfect shortcake? I’d be ok drowning in it.
favorite wing flavor at bootleggers? Oh, girl, I am not a decisive person, usually. But I can say that the jalapeno honey wings are my favorite.
bama or auburn? Alright, don’t tell anyone ‘cause I don’t want a mob to come after me with pitchforks and all of that but I don’t care? Like, at all. But I’ll root for whoever is on the jersey my customer is wearin’.
middle name? Annalise. Don’t ask if there is a reason my mama gave me that name. It ain’t no one I know’s name.
drink you order at the bars around town? Depends. If my granny’s friends are around, water. Gotta be healthy, hydrated and not disappointing god. But when they go home around 7, ‘cause that’s what old people think is late, I be orderin’ this drink I call The Karina. Which, yes, is named after me because like me, it’s simply amazing. And yes, all of the bartenders have asked me to stop calling it that and to refer to it by it’s real name but it’s real name is Fruit Tingle but that’s a dumb name so I’ve renamed it.
movie do you wish the galaxy would play? Magic Mike, XXL
what position do you sleep in? I’m a side sleeper. And I curl up into a little bit of a ball.
favorite mary kate & ashley movie? Oh my god, the one where they’re in Paris and meet the hot Paris guys? Like, that’s my dream. Or Holiday in the Sun where they go to the Bahamas and get to hang with cute boys. Oh, no…When in Rome, where they go to Rome and…meet cute boys? Wait, are all their movies the same thing but different vacation destinations?
celebrity crush? Changes all the time. But also Nick Jonas has been bae since I was like…9.
harry potter patronus? I’m not a really big Patrón fan so…pass?
biggest bargain you’ve ever bought? I’m sorry, have we met? I only buy bargains. Most impressive bargain though, I got this real cute dress for $2. It’s real cute.
high school superlative? Well, I like to think that it would be Best Hair or Cutest Girl in the World but I did drop out so technically nothing.
prospective name for your first (or next) child? Jake Gyllenhaal Jr.?
pop, soda, or coke? Coke, 100% Coke. Ugh, who says pop? Gross. And, lord…you know what’s worse? When someone says, “Soda Pop.” Like, what? I’m this close to calling the police. I’m so triggered right now.

Taylor Swift piles on the charm — and grown-up power — in Ford Field extravaganza
Twelve years ago this week, tucked at the bottom of the lineup, a teenage, country-singing Taylor Swift played one of her earliest national concert dates: an inconspicuous opening set in metro Detroit.
The Pennsylvania-bred singer-songwriter has come a long, long way since that modest performance supporting Phil Vassar at DTE Energy Music Theatre.
Tuesday night at a sold-out Ford Field, the 28-year-old pop superstar practically burst through the stadium’s seams, presenting an immense spectacular for a packed house of her dependably devoted Swifties.
Detroit was the latest stop on Swift's Reputation Stadium Tour, and she took the opportunity to pay homage to Aretha Franklin, whose memorial activities are under way in the city this week. Swift spoke reverently about the late soul icon and had the stadium darkened as she led a minute of silence.
It was a solemn moment in a nearly two-hour show that dispensed spectacle, drama, frothy fun and mature finesse in equal parts. And while elements of old Taylor Swift concerts were apparent — including the illuminated wrist bands that turned the audience into a synchronized light show — it was clear she’s been through a creative reckoning since her 2015 stop at this same stadium.
As Swift grows up, headed toward 30 next year, she’s been insisting that “the old Taylor” is gone — and sure enough, the musical throwbacks were minimal Tuesday night. From the time she took the stage in a black sequined leotard with “… Ready for It,” first of the night’s big numbers with her dance troupe, the set was dominated by material from last year’s “Reputation.”
The album provided the dark rumble of “I Did Something Bad,” the yummy, go-down-easy hooks of “Gorgeous,” the more sophisticated sweep of “Getaway Car” and “Call it What You Want,” and the fractured pop-rock of “Don’t Blame Me” that swelled into something epic.
As she sat at a piano late in the evening for the show’s poignant section, pairing “Long Live” with “New Year’s Day,” Swift spoke about the “surreal” passage of time, noting the jolt she gets when grown-up fans say they’ve been listening since age 8.
Golden snakes were a recurrent visual motif behind her, including the lunging cobra that came with the musical menace of “Look What You Made Me Do.” The onscreen snakes echoed the imagery that accompanied the “Reputation” rollout, presumed metaphors for the public attacks Swift has faced.
While the aw-shucks grins of yore have given way to sultrier onstage poses, Swift still played sweetly to her Detroit crowd, noting early on that “it’s a Tuesday night, and you guys are acting like it’s a Saturday times five.” She later made a point to thank the Ford Field staffers who helped pull off the show, from the parking attendants to the folks charged with “cleaning up the confetti off the floor.”
Unlike most of her pop-star peers, Swift has kept an admirably light touch on social media, especially in recent times. Whether it’s smart PR or natural inclination, that lowkey presence online and in the press have allowed her music to do most of her talking, as it did on the ebullient moving-on anthem “Shake it Off.”
Staying off the radar has also allowed Swift’s shows to loom that much larger, the best chance for fans to truly engage with their hero. That was certainly the case Tuesday night — two hours of pumped-up razzmatazz that also served as an intimate, running conversation.

National Curried Chicken Day
A favorite dish of Indians and Britons, as well as people from other places throughout the world, like the Caribbean and Asia, curried chicken offers a delicious and comforting blend of flavors. National Curried Chicken Day is here to pay respect to this yummy dish that is a favorite craving by so many.
History of National Curried Chicken Day
Getting its start approximately 8000 years ago, chicken curry has a long history in kitchens in its originating country of India. In more recent years, this dish has made its way around the world and is beloved in all sorts of places by people of many cultures.
The presence of curried chicken in Great Britain seems to go back as far as the 1700s, linked to the rise of the British Empire as explorers brought recipes back from their trips. The first British recipe for chicken curry was printed in The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy by Hannah Glasse in 1747, and the recipes continued to evolve and add spices moving forward.
US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and General George S. Patton were famously served curried chicken in 1940, using a recipe by a woman from the state of Georgia. At that time the dish was called “country captain”.
When a chicken curry recipe was used to celebrate the coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, the dish was then (and often in the future) referred to as “coronation chicken”. And the love that Brits have for chicken curry (and all other sorts of curry too) has just continued on!
Now, National Curried Chicken Day, also referred to as National Chicken Curry Day, is the best time to pay honor to this delicious dish and enjoy everything it has to offer! With the day falling in the middle of winter in the northern hemisphere, this dish brings a great deal of warmth and comfort to any family table.
How to Celebrate National Curried Chicken Day
A delight to the taste buds, National Curried Chicken Day offers plenty of opportunities to get excited and celebrate! Try out some of these ideas:
Eat Some Curried Chicken
Those who have a favorite curry house or Indian restaurant can certainly find a simple path to enjoying this day. For popular restaurants or large groups, it might be necessary to make a reservation in advance, or just head on over and request a table at the door. Order up some dishes of curried chicken, complete with rice and naan bread, and enjoy to your heart’s content!
Try Making Chicken Curry at Home
While some curried chicken dishes can be a bit complicated, almost anyone can make it if they simply follow a recipe. Many spices will likely be on the list of ingredients when making this dish for National Curried Chicken Day. This might include spices like ground coriander, cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, fennel seeds, mustard and cloves. These spices are what bring out the delicious flavors in a chicken curry!

@fresh2definitely OK so i know this is a shitload of links but obvs u can pick at it and whatnot. i really super don’t expect anyone to listen to ALL of this comprehensively but here’s some of my favs (which is only like 10% of the music i like to listen to semi-regularly)
https://youtu.be/RNSDk_Sg4Zk i just found this album 2day
https://youtu.be/HmOb2ddSzPs i used to listen to this song all the time in 2013. i found out about this guy from weatherscan videos
https://youtu.be/fuhHU_BZXSk my good friend linked me this band because its name bore resemblance to HIS favorite band “skinny puppy” and said “i accidentally found them looking for skinny puppy vids/music and i thought that mason would like this” and he was very, very right. snarky puppy has a breadth of extremely talented members, including legendary organist Cory Henry and Musica Theoria Expert Jacob Collier
https://youtu.be/ZVJigvTWpWA a piece my brother showed me. i knew KNOWER from a song i’ve heard of theirs previously called “window shop” which is also good.
https://youtu.be/IqBNa5eXgnw this is a song sampled in Freddie Gibbs & Madlib’s Scarface. most notably the outstandingly tasty bridge at 2:08
https://youtu.be/ywpf7pjjQv0 a piece i heard on a brazillian jazz fusion/soul compilation assembled by the dude in the first link. every song on this compilation is fucking outstanding.
https://youtu.be/YLfkgo-3_sk extremely fluid and dynamic bassline in this one
https://youtu.be/yRlExXqMCis this guy had aretha franklin on this album so that’s definitely a testament to how probably-good it is
https://youtu.be/d88I2XpTQpI most everything frank zappa has ever written is yummy and complex and dynamic but here’s one that i very much recommend for productivity. it also has that signature ‘80s guitar sound.
https://youtu.be/6PDRRtCHtJM french song i heard on the radio

What are You Planning to Eat this President’s Day
As February comes, the nation takes a sigh of relief at the arrival of President’s Day Weekend. Each year, the 15 February is a day to honor George Washington’s birthday, casually known in many U.S. states as President’s Day to celebrate all presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, who was also born in February. Countrywide, several businesses and schools celebrate with a day off. It is best for a winter vacation break. However, people celebrate this government President’s day by cooking a menu at home or dining out the food as the President eats.
Some of them feature seafood to honor Washington’s love of seafood. A true lover of fish, Washington celebrates President’s day with Tilapia with Green Beans. It is a protein-filled dish that is full of fresh flavors. This crispy white fish is rapidly cooked in a luxurious butter-lemon sauce, served with juicy green beans and fresh cherry tomatoes.
President Obama was born in Hawaii; therefore, he likely to have the island’s rich signature dishes. And the most famous Hawaii dish is Juicy Hawaiian Burger. The most famous Hawaii fruit caramelized pineapple is used, which makes this burger flavorful. Each patty is marinated with oregano, topped with creamy mozzarella, mixed jalapeno in mayonnaise, and season to highlight the combination of the sweet and savory flavor of this yummy burger.
President Obama also lived in Chicago before moving to Washington DC; therefore, he enjoyed some of Chicago’s best deep dish pizza. You can try Chicago’s classic Italian Sausage and Pepper Deep Dish Pizza recipe, highlighting sweet or spicy Italian sausage with fresh mushrooms, adding green bell peppers for the richness of spice, and gooey provolone, mozzarella cheese for a cheesy flavor. The best way to bake this pizza is a deep-dish pan, as the dough will rise significantly in the oven.
This weekend tries to explore different types of yummy cuisines.
