The Fox and The Shepard. Prologue Chapter 3.
read chapter 2 here
Prologue chapter 3: Taking a Trip to Gilmore’s Glorious Goods. Syngorn, 826PD.
“The Great Calamity, a war fought by the Prime Deities against the Betrayer Gods which put an end to the Age of Arcanum and resulted in the Divergence where the Betrayer Gods were all banished from Exandria. The Divine Gate was constructed, and the Prime Deities also left Exandria.” My professor Lady Finnea Leoran said as she paced in front of the stain glass window in the library, I tried to stifle a yawn which I didn’t do well because her eyes snapped up at me with annoyance. “Am I boring you Lady Sonia?” she asked. Yes, I thought in my mind, but didn’t say out loud because that would only annoy her further.
“I just don’t understand why we are going over information that you have already taught me?” She walked over to the table I was sitting at, starting to raffle through a stack of papers that were sitting on the corner of the table before finding the one she was looking for and placing it in front of me.
“Because you scored poorly on the test, I had given you yesterday, that is why. The calamity might be boring to you, but it is an important piece of history that all elvish nobility must have full knowledge about. We never know if something like that may happen again, the more we know the more we will be prepared.” She said, I tried my best not to roll my eyes at the notion.
“Can I go to the restroom?” I asked, she narrowed her eyes at me as if trying to read my face to see if I actually did need to go or if I was just trying to get out of the lesson. I just matched her gaze. “I mean I could go here.” I said and she quickly shook her head.
“No that wouldn’t be lady like.” She said sharply.
“No, it would not.” I agreed as I stood up from my chair making a scraping sound against the wood.
“If you are not back in 30 minutes, I will inform your parents that you skipped yet another lesson.” She said, crossing her arms over her chest. I pressed my lips into a firm line before opening my mouth to speak.
“Do you know my hobby is fortune telling?” I asked her.
“I’m aware. A rather strange hobby for a noble lady.” She said, I took out the deck of cards I always carried on me from the satchel that I had slung across the back of the chair I had been sitting in. She watched me, a bit confused as I took the cards out of the box and began to shuffle them quickly focusing on that electric energy I always felt when I did this. Eventually some cards came flying out of the deck onto the table and she watched me intently as I flipped them over. I took my time examining the cards before glancing back up at her.
“It says here that you will be met with a choice to reveal information that you shouldn’t be revealing, if you choose to reveal this information you will be met with misfortune however if you choose to stay silent then you will avoid it.” I said, I kept my face devoid of expression as she nervously searched my eyes fiddling with a stray black hair that had come undone from her bun.
“Are you threatening me?” She asked.
“I’m doing nothing of the sort, just reading what the cards are telling me. I do advise, however listening to their warning.” I said with a smirk, she nervously cleared her throat adjusting the collar on her button up white shirt.
“May I go now?” I asked. She let out a long sigh.
“You may.” She said, I quickly put my cards back in the box stuffing it in my satchel grabbing it as I dashed out of the library. I tried to keep my footsteps light as I slightly jogged through the house going up the long spiral steps and down a long stretching hallway where a set of double white wooden doors sat at the end of it.
I pushed open the doors and closed them behind me once I entered. My room was rather large, something you expect of a nobleman’s daughter. The walls were forest green with large paintings that hung on them. All the paintings were images of Syngorn, except one large painting that hung right over the bed. The painting was of the elvish god the Arch Heart who was elegantly standing in the middle of a forest, their long golden hair resting gently at their side as they stared up at the ray of sun peaking through the tops of the trees. On top of the bed was a couple stuffed animals, one of an owlbear and the other being a small fox sitting next to it. There was also a doll of an elf with long golden blonde hair wearing a white robe dress with golden elvish designs gracing the top of the dress flowing down to the sleeves. Under the bed spread out on top of the lightly colored wooden floor was a large circular forest green fancy rug. On the opposite side of the room was a large fireplace made of white stone with golden leaves and branches framed the sides and top of it. In front of the fireplace was a single dark purple chair and matching couch with an oak-colored wooden table, a small crystal chandelier hanging just above it. Further into the room was a large curved window that touched from the ground and reached the ceiling with white sheer curtains that had been pulled back to let light fill the room. In the center of the window was a door that opened up to a balcony that overlooked the garden of the estate with the city of Syngorn gracing the horizon.
I dashed across the wooden floor making a beeline for another set of large white wooden doors flinging them open to reveal rows and rows of fancy dresses of all sorts of colors. I pushed each dress aside until I found a simple dark green dress and a dark brown cloak, I grabbed both tossing them onto the bed behind me. I stripped off my red formal dress that tightly fit my figure, struggling to get it off over my head as the bottom of it was so heavy. Once I finally managed to get it off over my head, my fluffy pale pink hair puffed out covering my face. I blew out some air from my mouth causing the hair to fly out of my face for a moment only to land directly back in place, I groaned as I pushed it away in frustration. I tossed the red dress to the ground working on getting the green dress on which felt so much less constricting as it was light weight and didn’t hug my body in the way the red one did allowing me the freedom of movement. I put on the brown cloak on top of it then reached under my bed grabbing a pair of brown lace-up boots. I sat down on the bed feeling it sink with my weight, I kicked off my red flats and put the boots on lacing up each one tightly. I stood up grabbing my satchel slinging it over my head resting the strap across my chest as the bag rested gently against my right hip. I made my way over to the window, opening the door shutting it behind me. I peered over the balcony bars searching the garden for anyone who might be outside, which at the moment there didn’t seem to be. I swung my legs over the bars of the balcony and faced towards the bars as I started to climb down, working my way to the bottom edge of the balcony as my legs swung under me as I dangled there. I took a deep breath then let go landing first on my feet but losing my balance falling on my butt in the soft grass. I got up brushing the dirt and grass off my clothes before doing another check around to see if anyone had heard me fall, once I realized I was in the clear I started making my way down the gravel path that led to a large courtyard decorated with all sorts of plants and a fountain sitting in the center of the path that opened up into a large circle around it with rows of flowers framing the edges. I walked around the fountain now heading into the rose garden which was almost like a maze as hedges of roses taller than myself towered over me obscuring me from view.  There was a tall stone wall that surrounded the border of the estate with an equally tall metal gate that was the only way in or out, however I knew of another way out. I made my way through the rose garden walking up to where the wall was, then I got on my hands and knees as I pushed aside some of the bushes that was covering half of the wall revealing a hole. I crawled through the hole which was becoming less easy the older I got. I came out on the other side pushing apart some more bushes so I could crawl onto the cobblestone street and stood up. I tried my best to brush the dirt, grass and leaves off my clothes as I made my way down the street.
It wasn’t long before I made it to the Tarn Ward which was the central district of Syngorn. Since it was still daytime, it was mostly empty as business was only allowed to take place during the night with the exception of inns and restaurants. I walked towards a two-story corner shop that was made of dark purple brick with big black store front windows with different types of magical items on display. A small sign was attached to the window that was closest to the door on the bottom floor. The sign said closed both in elvish and in common. I walked towards the front door which was a large black wooden door with a large light purple sign directly above it that said, “Gilmore’s Glorious Goods: Syngorn.” In fancy painted text. I turned the knob opening the door walking in causing the bell attached to the door on the inside to chime.
“We are closed!” I heard Ollie shout from deeper inside the store, I opened the door then shut it again trying to make it seem like whoever entered just left. The inside was dimly lit and there was rows and rows of displays of magical armor, weapons, and a variety of other magic items. I put the hood of my cloak up ducking down behind a rack of weapons as I stealthily made my way through the store. I crawled my way through making sure that I stayed hidden, eventually I got deep enough into the store that I could see the edge of the counter and I peered from my hiding spot. I saw Ollie sitting at the counter, a half-eaten apple in his hand and his eyes trained on the book that laid out in front of him. I shifted back around the display trying to get closer to the counter without being seen. I made it to another display that was located right next to the counter and peered around it again, only Ollie was not there. I looked around the room confused wondering where he had gone.
“What are you doing?” I heard a voice say from above me.
“AHHHHH!!!” I screamed my head jerking up slamming directly into the wooden display behind me and I covered my head as I groaned in pain.
“Are you alright?” Ollie asked now sitting next to me on the floor, I glared at him still rubbing the back of my head.
“How did you know I was here!?” I shouted. Ollie made a gesture pointing behind him and I looked over his shoulder to see a large mirror sitting directly on the floor with both of us in the reflection. My shoulders slumped in defeat at my failed attempt to sneak up on him and he gave me a pat on the shoulder.
“Maybe next time.” He said standing up taking my hand pulling me up along with him. Yeah, next time, I thought even though I have failed every time I have tried to sneak up on him. “What are you doing here? Don’t you have lessons today?” he asked, removing the hood from my head using his hands to feel the back of my skull probably to check for a bump.
“I was doing so well in my lesson today they let me leave early!” I said, giving him a bright smile, he smirked at me.
“More like you snuck out again.” He said removing his hand from my head to show a leaf he had plucked from my hair. Twirling it with his fingers in front of my face.
“Ok I snuck out, but I was so bored!” I said, snatching the leaf from his fingers. “You try listening to some stuffy professor go on and on about the calamity all day. I was nearly bored to tears!” I said dramatically and Ollie just rolled his eyes at me making his way back over to the counter. I followed behind him, getting a glance at the book he was reading. “What are you reading?” I asked him.
“Some book my father got when he went to Emon, it’s got all this information about ancient weapons. I’m sure it will be boring to you as ancient history isn’t your thing.” He teased me and I stuck out my tongue at him in response.
“It’s not that I hate learning about it, I just want to learn like everyone else does you know go to school be around people my age. Not stuck in some room with a stuck-up noble lady who talks to me like I know nothing.” I said fiddling with a feather pen that was sitting on the table running my fingers through the tan colored feather. “You know most noble children go to school, but not me, no my parents wanted me to have a private tutor. More like they wanted to keep in eye on me at all times.”
“I wonder why, it’s not like you sneak out or anything.” Ollie said sarcastically and I took the pen brushing the feather against his nose, laughing as his nose crinkled and he swatted it away. “Why would you want to go to a school with a bunch of stuck-up noble kids anyway? They will probably be just as bad as all their stuck-up noble parents.” he said. I thought about it then shrugged.
“You’re probably right, I think I just want to go so I can have an excuse to leave my house more. I can’t wait till I get old enough that I can finally leave Syngorn on my own.”
“You won’t leave on your own.” Ollie said almost sounding annoyed at the idea.
“What? why can’t I go on my own?” I asked setting the pen back down on the counter.
“Obviously we will go together that’s always been the plan right? I’m going to save up money to buy a cart then when you are allowed to leave, we will see all of Tal’Dorei together.” He said with a smile which I returned.
“I don’t know, maybe I’ll just leave on my own.” I teased and he made a dramatic gasp.
“You wouldn’t dare break my heart like that.” He said, “if you leave on your own, you will leave me no choice but to track you down.”
“Oh? you will come and find me?” I asked.
“of course, I’ll always come find you no matter where you go.” He said with a soft smile on his face, I felt my face get hot a little and I turned away from him trying to distract myself by looking at a glass case filled with different kinds of rings that I assumed were all magical.
“you’re ridiculous.” I mumbled. He walked around from behind the counter to come stand in front of me placing both his hands on top of the glass case.
“I’m being serious. You and me we are a team, no one can separate us.” He said, I looked up at him. His eyes stared at me with such certainty that I felt my heart speed up from his gaze. I was about to open my mouth to say something when there was a loud thud from upstairs causing both of us to flinch.
“Hello? Hello?” a low joyful voice said which was followed by the patter of footsteps as whoever it was came down the stairs. It was a burly man with black hair that was wavy that came to his shoulders. A smile graced his beautiful dark skin with a chin strap beard framing his face. “Little Ollie.” He said happily as he bound down the steps, I took stock in his appearance he was dressed much differently than I saw people dress in Syngorn, his outfit was flowy but it still brought the best out of his figure and it was colored in various shades of purple and gold. It was also made of really expensive looking material. I must have been staring a bit too intensely as his eyes averted to me. “Well, hello who are you?” he asked with still a playful tone in his voice. I hesitated to answer right away and I could feel his eyes staring daggers of curiosity into me.
“Shes my friend.” Ollie answered sensing my slight panic at the appearance of someone I didn’t know.            “Oh I see, does your friend have a name?” the man asked as he leaned against the counter in a relaxed fashion.
“Sonia.” I finally managed to say. “Sonia Eleros.” The man’s eyes grew wide.
“I know you, you’re Almar’s daughter.” The man said, it was weird to hear someone address my father so casually that wasn’t my mother. He pressed a hand delicately to his chest “I’m Shaun Gilmore, but you can just call me Gilmore.” He said with a wink. My eyes widened.
“Are you the Gilmore that owns this store?” I asked, he smiled giving me a nod.
“Indeed I am, I also own the store in Whitestone and Emon. Though the one in Emon is the original and that’s where I am most of the time. I like to check up on my other branches from time to time to see how things are going, speaking of which is your father around Ollie?” he asked, Ollie shook his head.
“No, him and my mother went to the Feygrove. The Fey are having a festival and they wanted to see if they could get any special magical items that might have come from the Fey Realm. They told me to watch the store while they were gone.” Ollie answered.
“Ah, so they went out to have fun all on their own huh? How boring.” Gilmore said placing his hand under his chin as if he was thinking about something. “How old are you now Ollie?” He asked.
“14.” Ollie answered, Gilmore seemed to bristle at his response.
“14? Already?” Gilmore said, he snapped his fingers a mirror appearing floating right in front of his face and Gilmore examined his reflection. “I think I just gained a new wrinkle from that answer.” He said, I giggled a little.
“I think you look great Mr. Gilmore” I said, he snapped his fingers the mirror disappearing as he looked at me with a bright expression on his face.
“Oh, I like you.” He said with a smile. “Flattery will get you everywhere darling.” He winked and I laughed again. He clapped his hands together “well as it seems Varo isn’t here and I have nothing better to do, I say we go to the festival.” I felt an instant surge of excitement flow through me and I almost wanted to jump up and down.
“Can we really?!” I shouted; Gilmore nodded. “Oh, this is so exciting my parents have never let me go to the Fey Festival!” I said grabbing Ollie’s hand, already starting to drag him out of the store.
“Wait Sonia! Don’t pull so hard!” Ollie shouted as I dragged him, Gilmore let out a loud laugh.
“Oh, to be young again.” He said as we left the store.

Matt Gertz at MMFA:
Vice President Kamala Harris will sit down for an interview with Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier on Wednesday, reaching out to viewers of former President Donald Trump’s personal propaganda outlet in the closing weeks of the 2024 campaign. Baier’s role at Fox is to provide his network with a sheen of credibility by producing a program that largely resembles a traditional newscast. His program prioritizes stories which flatter the right’s biases and soft-pedals or ignores damaging revelations about Trump. But his presentation is sober, a contrast to the enraged grievance-mongering of the colleagues who follow him in the Fox rotation. As a result, Baier has received an unearned reputation for integrity from some journalists at mainstream outlets — and provoked occasional fits of anger from Trump, who prefers the sort of obsequious propaganda he has gotten from regular Fox interlocutors like Sean Hannity, Maria Bartiromo, and the late Lou Dobbs.
[...]
Baier urged network executives to keep Fox from calling states for Biden
While Baier would like to move past Fox’s history of lying to bolster Trump’s 2020 subversion campaign, the Fox anchor is personally implicated in shocking breeches of journalistic standards with obvious ramifications for the coming election. After Fox’s decision desk called Arizona for Joe Biden on election night — infuriating the Trump campaign and many Fox viewers — Baier urged network executives to overrule the decision desk in order to make amends. Baier emailed Fox President Jay Wallace on November 5, 2020, to say that the decision desk’s Arizona call was “hurting us” and should be rescinded. He texted Tucker Carlson, who worried that the network could lose its audience to right-wing rivals, the same day, writing, “I have pressed them to slow. And I think they will slow walk Nevada.” Fox did not retract its Arizona call, which was subsequently vindicated. But Wallace reportedly “overruled the Decision Desk team” soon after, “refusing to let them call Nevada for Biden even after other networks did.”
[...]
While his “news” side colleagues left Fox, Baier reupped his contract
Fox’s PR team used to regularly highlight Baier alongside longtime network stalwarts Shep Smith and Chris Wallace to claim that the network had a credible news division. It is telling that Baier is the only member of that troika still employed by the network following what his former colleagues describe as its yearslong transformation into a Trumpist propaganda outlet. After Smith abruptly resigned in 2019, he said “that his presence on Fox became untenable as opinion shows on the network spread falsehoods that hosts knew were lies.”  After Wallace left in 2021, he said it had become “unsustainable” to work at a network where people questioned who won the 2020 election and whether pro-Trump rioters storming the U.S. Capitol constituted an insurrection. They aren’t alone.  Stirewalt said after his 2021 firing that during the Trump years, Fox became “an arm of a political party.” In March 2018, Fox strategic analyst Ralph Peters told colleagues that he would not renew his contract because Fox had become “a mere propaganda machine for a destructive and ethically ruinous administration.”
After longtime political correspondent Carl Cameron left in 2017, he explained that “over the years, the right-wing hosts drowned out straight journalism with partisan misinformation” and said the network’s stars were “allied” with Trump.
Bret Baier, the interviewer for Kamala Harris’s Fox interview tomorrow, has a long history of partisan right-wing behavior while masquerading as a “straight news” reporter.

The Fox and The Shepard Prologue Chapter 2
Read Chapter 1 here
Prologue Chapter 2: The Fox Meets the Shepard.
Syngorn, 822PD.
I stood at the top of our second-floor steps staring down at all the people who were chattering away at the grand entrance of our home. I crinkled my nose at the thought of having to meet so many people, I felt a soft gentle hand smooth down some of the hair on top of my head and I looked up to see my mother Rathiain looking down at me with a gentle smile. A lot of people say I look like my mother as we shared similar appearance traits, long fluffy pale pink hair, porcelain skin and striking lavender eyes. The only thing we didn’t share when it came to looks was the two moles that were placed right under my left eye, that was something I had gotten from my father.
“You look beautiful my darling.” She said smiling at me, I returned her smile.
“You look pretty too mother.” I said, my mother was dressed in a long deep purple dress that tightly fit her figure showing off all her curves, her hair was delicately pinned up in a rose braid design with a purple gem holding it in place and matching jewelry hung from her neck and long pointed ears. She took my hand as she started to drag me down the stairs her black heels making clicking sounds as it made contact with the marble floor. I noticed curious glances at us as we made our way down to the bottom of the steps. I didn’t recognize anyone in the room, many of them were elves but the room was filled with a variety of different people. I felt excitement bubble in my chest taking in the faces of goblins, dragonborn, dwarfs, and many others. My mother led me towards the grand room that my parents used to host their events. I instantly caught sight of my father Almar, who is a rather tall high elf wearing a dark blue suit that fitted his slender figure, his short brown hair was combed neatly, and he was happily talking to another elf I didn’t recognize. I broke free of my mother’s grasp running towards my father “Father! Father!” I shouted as I wrapped my arms around his leg, I heard him let out a small sigh.
“Sonia darling it is not very lady like to run and shout.” He scolded me, I felt my excitement fizzle as I let go of his leg to fiddle with my fingers as I stared at the ground. “I’m sorry about that, my daughter is still learning how to act during these events.”
“It’s alright, I don’t have much experience coming to events like this as I’m simply just a merchant.” The man my father was speaking to said, I looked up meeting his gaze. His yellowish green eyes soften when I made contact, and a soft smile graced his dark copper skin. He had long black hair that he had braided to the side and his clothes though not the fanciest still looked respectful.  I felt another set of eyes on me and looked away from the man to see a boy standing next to him. He didn’t look much older than me, he looked at me with a tad shocked expression at my sudden appearance. I was equally shocked as I was not expecting to see someone my age here. I could tell the boy was also an elf based on his long pointed ears, he had pale skin that was slightly tanned in color with freckles that speckled his face and down his neck. His eye were the same color as the man standing next to him with thick circular glasses that framed his face, he had copper colored hair that was pulled back into a small ponytail and his clothes were of the same quality as the man’s not too fancy but fancy enough that no one would complain. “You must be Lady Sonia; your father has talked very much about you. My name is Varo Foxfire.” He reached down and put a hand on top of the boy’s head “this is my son Oleander Foxfire, but we just call him Ollie. I brought him along hoping that the two of you could be friends as you are both close in age, I hope that’s alright” he said now addressing my father who pressed his lips into a firm line as if he wasn’t truly fond of the idea, but before my father could say no, I quickly grabbed the boys hand who seem to jolt at my touch not expecting me to grab him.
“We have a huge library want to see?” I asked excitedly, the boy glanced between his father and mine unsure of what to do. I looked up at my father trying to plead with my eyes to let us go and my father sighed clearly frustrated with me as he knew I was using this as an excuse to escape this party. I heard the clacking of heels and turned to see my mother.
“Let them go darling, you know Sonia doesn’t have many chances to make friends her age.” My mother spoke, my father sighed again.
“Alright. You two go play but behave yourself.” He said looking directly at me with firm eyes and I nodded tightening my grip on the boy’s hand dragging him out of the room while my parents continued to talk to Varo. The boy was silent as I dragged him through the house passing some of the guests who just gave us smiles and a few whispered about how cute we were. Finally, we made our way down a long hallway with many windows on the left side of us while on the right were rows of fancy paintings and few portraits of myself and my family. At the end of the hallway was a big set of dark wooden doors with elvish accents carved into it. I pushed open the door revealing a huge room with walls of books that were at least two stories tall and a huge stain glass window that touched the bottom of the floor reaching all the way to the ceiling, the sun was hitting it just right as lights of blue, red and green danced across the dark wooden floors. I heard a woe come from the boy next to me and I spun around to look at him.
“Your father said your name is Oleander is that like the flower? How old are you? Where are you from? What’s your family like? Do you have a favorite color? I have a favorite color its-“He let go of my hand pressing it against my mouth to stop me from talking.
“You talk too much.” Was all he said as he removed his hand from my mouth, I blinked at him a bit taken back by the blunt statement. “Also, it’s just Ollie, I don’t like it when people call me Oleander.” He said walking further into the room to look at the books on the wall nearby.
“Why? it’s a pretty name.” I said, he turned to look at me the light hitting the side of his face making the colors appear on the side of his cheek and his eyes sparkled a bit.
“Everyone always makes fun of me for it because I’m named after a flower. It’s not scary.” He said.
“But Oleanders are poisonous? Just because something looks harmless doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous. I think your name is cool and plenty scary.” He looked at me in disbelief of what I had just said before he covered his mouth turning away from me, I was about to ask what was wrong when I saw his shoulders shaking along with a few laughs that escaped his mouth. I puffed up my cheeks “hey are you laughing at me?!” I shouted and he turned back towards me.
“Yeah” he said honestly “but I’m not making fun of you, it’s just do, you always say whatever comes to mind?” he asked
“Maybe? Is that weird?” I asked a bit sheepishly now feeling a bit self-conscious. He shook his head.
“I don’t think so.” I felt myself smile at his words as he turned his attention back to the bookcase “do all these books belong to you?” he asked, I shook my head.
“No, I have a bookshelf in my room with my own books, these are ones my parents have collected. I still like to come in here and read them though, they are filled with information about different things around Exandria. One day I’m going to travel and see all the places in these books.” I said happily as I picked out a book specifically on a town called Whitestone. “I really want to go here, it says that the Lady of Whitestone is originally from Syngorn and shes a member of Vox Machina.” I said flipping to a page showing Lady Vex’ahila De Rolo holding the book up to show Ollie.
“I have been there.” He said, my jaw practically hit the floor as I shut the book clutching it to my chest.
“Really!?” I shouted, he nodded. “Did you get to meet the De Rolos’!?” I asked excitingly as I closed the distance between us our faces now really close. I saw his face flush red before he put distance between us and he shook his head.
“No, I never saw them, I was only there for about a week. My father works for a man named Mr. Gilmore and we travel from towns all over Tal’Dorei to pick up odd magical items then my father sells them to Mr. Gilmore to put in his store, but now my father wants to open up his own store here in Syngorn. I don’t really know the details, but apparently Mr. Gilmore has been wanting to open up a shop here for a while and is using my father’s connections in Syngorn to do it.” he said crossing the room to sit on the couch that was next to the window and I followed him sitting down right next to him.
“So, that’s why your father is talking to my father? So he can open this store?” I asked and Ollie nodded.
“Yeah, Mr. Gilmore said that if my father can get the funding and secure a building to open a shop that my father can run the store here in Syngorn. Which means that we will move here, I’m not really excited about that.” He said as he swung his legs back and forth as they didn’t quite reach the floor from where he was sitting on the couch.
           “Why?” I asked.
“Because I like traveling and meeting new people, I want to be a merchant when I grow up and I want to travel all over Exandria.” I smiled at his words as we both seemed to share the same dream.
“Can I go with you?” I asked.
“Do you know how to sell things?” He asked, I shook my head.
“No, oh but I’m going to learn how to tell fortunes!” I said excitingly getting off the couch to walk over to one of the bookshelves closest to the window pulling out a couple books to reveal a broken piece of wood which I pulled out to reveal my secret stash. Ollie came over to see what I was doing.
“what’s all this stuff?” he asked.
“My collection of important things.” I said reaching in pulling out various objects such as a small hand mirror, some crystal carvings I had gotten from a Fey from the Feygrove and finally pulling out the black wooden box. I stuffed the other stuff back into the spot before placing the wood back and covering it with the book I had pulled out. “Do you know who the Change-bringer is?” I asked, Ollie nodded.
“Yeah she’s the goddess of fate, many merchants follow her thinking she will bring them luck, but my father doesn’t believe in things like luck. He always says you have to work hard to get what you want and you can’t rely only on luck.” He said, as I took out the deck of cards sitting on the floor trying and failing to shuffle them as they started to spill over the floor. Ollie sat down next to me and helped me gather them back up, he also picked up a card examining it.
“Well, my father’s assistant told me that you can tell fortunes from the cards with the help of the Change-bringer.” I said, Ollie looked at me confused.
“But these are just cards with fancy pictures on them, how do they tell fortunes?” he asked. I shrugged my shoulders.
“I’m not sure, but he used them to tell my fortune today and he said the Change-bringer told him that I would make a faithful connection soon.” I said smiling “then I met you, so it has to be true right?”
“Are you saying I’m your faithful connection? Isn’t that a tad silly?” he said handing me the card he was holding. “We only met because our fathers know each other.” He said.
“But isn’t that fate then?” I asked.
“No.” he said flatly “We probably would have met regardless of the fortune.” I puffed up my cheeks in a pout.
“Here then I’ll prove it to you, I’ll find out if your father is going to get that store or not.” I closed my eyes trying to focus my mind on the woman I saw earlier today on the coin Zaatar had shown me and I felt that electric energy spread through my skin again then I opened my eyes flipping a card onto the floor in a dramatic fashion. “The cards say he will.” Ollie looked at me with an unimpressed look on his face.
“You have no idea, do you?” he asked.
“I have no idea.” I said giggling. “But you don’t know maybe it will come true.”
“you’re ridiculous.” He said joining in with my laughter. There was a light knock at the door, and I quickly put the cards back in the box before sliding it across the floor under the couch just as my mother opened the door with Varo standing right behind her.
“It sounds like you two are having fun.” Varo said with a light tone in his voice that sounded like he was pleased with the realization. “However, it’s time we left Ollie.” He said, I felt disappointment wash over me as I watched Ollie get up going over to his father. I quickly got to my feet rushing to my mother and Varo.
“Can Ollie come back to play?” I asked looking at my mother with hopeful eyes. She glanced over at Varo, who gave her a shrug.
“If it’s alright with you, I can bring Ollie when I come to do business with Lord Eleros. After-all I will be by often as we finalize the agreements of our deal and I find a place to open the store.” Varo said.
“Does that mean we are moving here?” Ollie asked, Varo nodded. Ollie turned to look at me with wide eyes and I saw him mouth ‘you were right.’
“it’s alright with me, it seems Sonia has taken quite a liking to your son. I think her having a friend her age would keep her entertained, she has a lot of energy you know.” My mother said. Varo nodded with a smile on his face.
“It will be good for Ollie as well, he’s good at making friends, but we have traveled so much that he’s always had to say goodbye to them. So having a friend he can make memories with will be great. Don’t you think so Ollie?” he said looking down at Ollie, however Ollie still had his wide green eyes fixed on me in amazement not paying attention to what anyone was saying. I averted my eyes feeling embarrassed by his stare. Varo just laughed “I think your daughter might have charmed my son into silence.” He said jokingly and my mother laughed.
“Shall we walk you two out?” my mother asked.
“That be great.” Varo answered. Ollie and I followed behind them as we walked out of the library into the hallway which was painted with the pink and orange colors of the sunset. Ollie leaned over to me putting his hand over my ear to whisper.
“Will you teach me how to tell fortunes?” He asked and I nodded.
“Sure.” I whispered with a smile.
