#forcing my theatre hcs on everyone

Musical theatre eah headcanons because my post about the musical in fairy’s got talent got some attention.

Part 1 soprano’s

Apple: this is canon (and obvious) “…Apple’s high, pure soprano…” (the story book of legends by Shannon hale chapter 17). She’s probably classically trained or something. Also the fact that she wakes Raven up in the morning with her singing… she is that obnoxious soprano (from the obnoxious soprano)

Cupid: Cupid would be a whisperer. She would sing so quietly. Her falsetto would be inaudible but I think that Justine would probably help her become more confident in her singing.

Lizzie: more of a belter but she also has a very clear and strong falsetto. Also in my head Lizzie is the #1 theatre kid. Like in wonderland she would just burst into song and any given time and that was normal. She also probably annoys the shit out of duchess with her karaoke all the time.

Meeshell: I mean this one’s pretty obvious. Do I just imagine her to sound like Jodie Benson… yes. Also can we talk about how in her webisode her singing was horrible? Idk if that was some sort of joke that went over my head but yikes…

Farrah: she would have a pretty decent range. I think that she would be more on the acting/dancing side rather than singing. I think that she wouldn’t have any tone. Her singing would be like talking.

Kitty: I think that she would be a pretty good singer. More in the mezzo range but still can sing soprano. She just wouldn’t take it seriously. But she does take muse-ic class canonically.

Holly: I don’t she would be a bad singer she just wouldn’t hold a candle to Lizzie or Apple. She would have a pretty strong voice but she would have difficulty singing on key.

Nina: I think that she would have a unique voice. Her voice is probably better suited for solo singing than choirs but she still does good for group harmonies.

Bunny: ngl I was contemplating putting her in the next part as an alto and saying she just speaks high in her register but then there’d be way too many altos. Alto or soprano she would be a very shy singer. Lizzie would have convinced her to try out (or ordered her).

For those who don’t know soprano is a voice type. It’s the highest voice type.

My HCs for Cabin 10 🩰 🕊 🎀

As a Cabin 10 girlie, I know 100% that these things would happen

They'd definitely be friends with Ares and Hephaestus kids

Ares kids would do their dirty work for them and help them plan ways to get back at other campers who were bullying their siblings

Aphrodite kids always have a Hephaestus friend so that they can build them things like lipstick swords, nail file daggers, a flame-resistant self fanning hand fan like from period dramas

Aphrodite kids are all about ~hacks~ so they'll take a shower then go to visit their Hephaestus buddy and put rollers in their hair since the forge's heat would basically dry and style their hair for them (no need for a blowdryer they can just sit and talk while their hair basically get a perm)

Also, they would def get the Hephaestus cabin to install a huge counter with sinks in their cabin so that they can sit in the sink and do their makeup (IYKYK)

Cabin 10 sleepovers almost every week

Cabin 10 loves love so ofc they're the biggest Disney princess fans ever!

If they hear that another camper hasn't seen them (looking at you Annabeth) they'll practically drag them to their cabin and force them to watch the movies

Aphrodite kids tie dye, bleach splatter, cut up, crop, add corseting to their shirts to make the bright orange chb tees less ugly

I feel like aphrodite kids are all interested in different things so like you have the nature girlies, the theatre kids, the stereotypical Regina George type, pastel goth queens, witchy baddies, fashion school students and the dedicated athletic ones (like dance, ice skating, gymnastics, soccer etc)

The nature girlies in cabin 10 work with Demeter kids to create a butterfly garden at camp that has benches and tall grasses and butterfly bush plants (like this) and they'll go out there and just sit and watch the butterflies

During capture the flag, they'll be in the group guarding the flag because they can charmspeak anyone on the opposite team to turn around and go the other direction

Not everyone in cabin 10 is comfortable with combat so they'll often help with strategy esp. if ares cabin is on the opposite team because they know them so well and can predict what they do

They have a secret cabin groupchat that can't be tracked and they'll ask their siblings to bring them certain makeup/skincare products the next time they come back to camp or to send them

Along this line, they would definitely make a list of products they've run out of and ask hermes cabin to go get the stuff for them

Like "oh you're sneaking out to get takis? Can you get mascara and lip liner while you're out? We need Charlotte Tillbury pillow talk and L'oreal telescopic mascara. Thanks bestie"

Things have been looking brightly for you lately! After some digging (aka forcing crowley to research about finding you a way back home bc you just KNOW he either forgot or doesnt care) you managed to find a way to alternate between your world and Twisted Wonderland, to everyones delight. (No grim was NOT crying because he thought he'd lose you wdym????)

After visiting Mankai company and explaining your reasoning for disappearing for a year (or so depends, its up to the reader!) your friends had thought you were crazy, or at the very least believed you but needed further..er, evidence? So you decided, you'd arrange a meeting between your old friends and your new ones, to prove you werent crazy but now, that raises one question left,,,,..Who would best get along with who??

Riddle Rosehearts

Ok so for Riddle I was lowkey stumped on who to pair him with? But I think he'd best get along with Sakyo Furuichi since they both are pretty authorative and strict? I genuinely dont know who else to pair him with 😭

Sakyo Didnt seem that interested in talking with Riddle at first, commenting on how he doesnt have time to meddle with some kid from the street 💀

Riddle did not like him. Not one bit.

But after spending more time with him and the rest of Autumm trope, he starts to respect his authorative figure and how he's able to keep his trope in shape, so maybe, he isnt that bad.

Hes still salty about being called a kid tho

Ace Trappola

As for Ace, I think he'd get along best with Banri Settsu, both relatively laid back people who get into trouble on a regular basis! though Banri's definitely more on the gangster-punk-ish-intimidating side rather than Ace's chill troublemaker vibe. I can see the both of them being competitive with games (for Banri, he'd invite him to the arcade, and for Ace, I guess a game of basketball??)

Both of em would talk shit behind everyones back LMAO

Banri's just complaining about Juza and Sakyo while he'd be complaining about Riddle and Deuce

Deuce Spade

Ah, our boy Deuce! I wholeheartedly believe he'd get along with Juza Hyodo! Both used to be deliquents after all (Or at least- looked like a deliquent?? For Juzas case?), but strived to better themselves. For Juza, he wanted to better himself (and his reputation as a deliquent, much like Deuce) because of his love for theatre, and Deuce wanted to quit his ways to become an honor role student! both of them would click really well tbh, in my opinion at least.

Ace is not happy as Deuce spends more time with him, Like?? Isnt he the best friend here 🤨🤨??? /hj

(mf he was the one who refused to call Deuce his bsf and now hes complaining 🙄)

Anyways back to hcs! I think Juza would be stiff approaching him tbh, while Deuce is politely greeting him and all

Once they get to know each other more, Deuce would share his old deliquent days while Juza just listens and gives his own experiences every here and then

Congrats! Juza now has another younger brother!

Trey Clover

And now for Trey, Ok I didn't even need to think twice about this, HE'D GET ALONG WITH OMI FUSHIMI ! They both radiate vibes of being the mom friend in the group, and both can cook/bake (COUGHS AND BOTH ARE VERY MUSCULAR WOOO-) , sooo..Yeah! I think Trey and Omi would share stories and their struggles of being the mom friendᵗᵐ and would exchange various recipes with each other! overall very wholesome :D

Last one but certainly not least, Cater!! Also didn't need to think much abt this one since I already knew, LIKE- as someone who played a3! first, and then twisted wonderland, I can say with full confidence our beloved Cay-cay radiated vibes of Kazunari Miyoshi!

They'd constantly exchange pics and would instantly follow each other on instagram, er- instablam (Cater instantly made himself an account, how? You have no idea tbh) Both cheery personalities immediately clicking with one another

Dad!Javi G Headcanons: 

-He is constantly worried about making the same mistakes that his father did. Never really being there for Javi, forcing him into the family business, trying to make him something he really isn’t. It’s something that you catch him lost in thought about sometimes, especially after the kids have gone to bed. He’ll just sit and watch them sleep sometimes, their little forms in the big cribs. 

-You try to remind him of all the good he does as their father, and how much they light up when they see him. Even when they’re babies. He is like the sunlight to them and their tiny faces turn to him whenever he’s near. 

-Javi wanted a lot of kids and honestly, you never wanted kids that much until you met him. He didn’t have to talk you into anything, it just felt right. Everything just clicked into place. First to be born is Sofia, Javi’s little princess. Next came Enzo, Javi’s big dreamer. You try for one more and…surprise, you get two. A boy and a girl. Leo came out first, followed two minutes later by Luciana. Javi always jokes about wanting another but you’re certain if you said yes he would be on board in a heartbeat. 

-Movie nights are a staple of the Gutierrez household. Everyone piles into the home theatre together and although there are perfectly good couches, you usually end up in a pillow and blanket pile on the floor with kids stretched out haphazardly over the both of you. Family favorites include Paddington and all the Pixar movies. Javi likes to watch old romance movies with you when the kids have gone to bed, and you definitely always end up making out like teenagers on the couch. 

-Javi loves when the kids are old enough to play around on the floor. They’ll launch themselves onto his stomach and hang on to his neck, laughing and giggling as he huffs out an oof every time they land on him. He lives for it though, even if his body aches and his knees pop when he stands up. 

-Mother’s Day is a big production. Javi always helps the kids make cards, pick out chocolates, and bring you breakfast in bed. This isn’t your typical eggshells-in-the-eggs situation- he would never make you suffer through that. One morning, on your first mother’s day, you hear Javi talking to Sofia. “It is your Mamá’s first day as an official mother, but she’s been the best mother to you since before you were even here. You need to be extra sweet to her today, mi almita.”

-He doesn’t want any fanfare for Father’s Day. Just to hang out with you and his babies. That's what he calls them, no matter how old they are.

-Javi is super protective of you all the time, and moreso when you’re pregnant. He tries not to be overbearing, but falters from time to time. He doesn’t send out for any of the middle of the night cravings you have, he’s going to find them himself. He loves to rub lotion on you and insists on lightly warm baths. He loves every bit of your body as it changes. 

I have, oh, approximately 1000 more thoughts about him. I’ll write him properly one of these days…..

people at school get very confused as to why soda and dally are “friends” seeing as they have such different personalities

soda bought dally an “im sorry women” hat and made him wear it. dally growled at everyone who looked at him wrong

they’re the most annoying people to be in a movie theatre with. they’ll make out loudly, yell at the screen, talk during the movie and go on their phones

soda forced dally to make a pillow fort with him. pony found them asleep in the pillow fort an hour later

HA ! You have fallen for my trap !! Now you will be forced to hear my hc!! How do people do these? Eh, I'll figure it out

(It's an official thing now. Look I MADE a mood board for it. It's fancy now)

The OG Losers were always super close as friends and would always hold hands or just generally hang off each other and it was always something their parents would assume they’d grow out of.

Jokes on their parents though because they never grew out of it. They did stop holding hands or doing as many things with romantic connotations in public once they realized how much negative attention it brought.

Richie takes any opportunity to grab his partners hands or lock arms. He is also the one who makes the most fun of his partners for holding his hand.  Bev and Ben meet the group and immediately understand that they must find a way to manage them before they get hurt. Not even in a targeted way. Just that they are too chaotic. 

Like the time they witnessed Eddie attempting to climb into Bills window and then falling off

Mike joins later on and Bill finds himself developing on a crush on him and so does Stan and the two pine after him.  Of course Mike starts dating Stan and Bill but he doesn’t really ever date Richie or Eddie

Their favorite group dates include going to the movies, the arcade, and every so often they give in and let Stan take them bird watching

Usually bird watching ends in some disaster or another 

Like the cliff incident or the time Eddie and Richie fought over what a birds name was. Both of them were wrong.

Movie dates always involve a lot of trading. They are very annoying to be in a movie theatre with as Mike insists that he sits between Stan and Bill but Richie wants to sit by Stan and Eddie but Eddie wants to sit by Bill. They change spots at least 6 different times but Mike never movies. He does pass back messages.

Back on my window note, climbing in through the window nearly gets banned by Ben after the 5th window related injury in one month. Most of these injuries were Stan related in some way or another and he never even attempts to climb in through the window. 

Richie makes mix tapes for each of his boyfriends and also helps them make mix tapes for each other. 

Stan leaves notes in his partners lockers and always signs them “love, Stan”

My personal HC is that Richie is a theatre nerd so of course everyone shows up to all his productions.

He always ends up with way to many flowers so eventually they decide to bring him the most ridiculous things as gifts.

The spot for most ridiculous gift given after a production was a random bottle cap that Bill found and no one can figure out what product or company it comes from.

Stan, Bill, and Mike go on their own special dates where they do nothing but sit on a bench that is in the middle of no where. They found it one day when Stan and Bill had been running away from some bullies.

Bill has fought multiple people and it concerns his partners a lot although he wins all of them

On the other hand, Eddie gets in a bunch of fights and loses. 

Richie is not allowed to pack his own lunch because he once packed only fruit snacks so now Stan packs an extra lunch. 

They had to add a couch to the club house because everyone kept fighting over who got to sit in the hammock. More so Stan would sit in the hammock and suddenly everyone wanted to sit in it. So the couch is much more suitable.

In high school, Richie carves everyone's initials into the kissing bridge. It made no sense to anyone driving by. 

They have movies nights and had to make an order for who would pick the movies. Everyone usually is fine with this but Bill has a tendency to go around and beg his partners to pick. He also usually either chooses a cheesy horror flick or a cheesier romance movie. 

During high school, an actual window entrance ban was in forced after Stan actually tried it but got caught because he climbed into the wrong window. 

This ban was broken multiple times by Richie

They also had a group game night for a bit but it eventually got banned by Bev since she was tired of everyone breaking up over monopoly

Stan gets everyone the most gifts. He’ll regularly be seen showing up with flowers, cookies, or chocolate if he visits one of his partners. He also likes to buy little things to give them. Like how he got Bill a stuffed duck.

Eddie thinks it’s funny to kiss his partners cheek at random to get them to blush. Stan always blushes the most at thing turning full red.

He is also the mom friend of the group, so you both become everyone's moms. Literally, Luke starts calling you mom at some point. Both you and Simeon will melt, I can guarantee it.

He doesn't want you to change, at least not if you don't want to. Obviously, if you personally decide to make a change of your own free will, he will support you full force. But he is never going to be an instigator. He likes you the way you are.

He starts buying rings so that he has some to exchange with you should the moment arise. The first time you give him one, he melts. He's died, and been sent back to heaven. He adored it.

He's a writer, so he is ready to play D and D at a moments notice, both as DM and as a character. He is also secretly writing a musical where you two get to fall in love on stage while the brothers and Solomon are background characters and the chorus.

You're watching a horror movie and laying your head in Simeon's lap, as he runs his hand through your purple hair. He's humming a little tune. The tune freezes and he stiffens as another jumpscare hits the screen.

"Ah, Simmy, did that one get you?" You grin, and he smiles down at you.

"Yes, but I'm safe with you here," he smiled softly. He used his free hand, and threaded your fingers together, drawing your joined hands to his lips to press a soft kiss to the back of it.

He then pulls your hand and holds it to his cheek, where he nuzzles against it with a satisfied hum.

"That's better," he says just as another jumpscare happens. He stiffens, and you smile softly.

"Simmy, we can turn on something else, it's okay," you say, but he shakes his head.

"It's fine, really, your love is protecting me," he leans down for a kiss, and you meet him halfway. Another jumpscare happens, and this time it doesn't get him.

"See? All better," he grins, and shimmies down a little so that you are both laying down and cuddling, his arms around you, not tight, but reassuring.

The rest of the movie, if he was spooked, you could only tell if his arms tightened around you, or if he whispered a soft "I love you" to you. Even though the movie hadn't frightened you, you realized the safety went both ways, and that in his arms, you were certain nothing could ever hurt you.

What sort of "holydays" do you think the Jedi would have?

I can picture them celebrating or marking the Epinox of whatever planet their on (if that planet has one.) due to it representing ballance between dark and light since day and night are of equal length on this date.

I can also imagine them marking the Solstice for mostly the same reasons, them being the longest day and the longest night respectively.

But here the thing, the Balance in the Force is not the same amount of Light and Dark, it doesn't work like that. Most people because the metaphor of Light and Dark instinctively think of it as something that cannot be separated and connect it Balance as the same amount of Light and Dark but you see The Force is, as Lucas wrote, highly tied to motivation such as Selflessness vs Selfishness.

So I'll put it this way, The Light Side stands for altruistic and selfless, and the other side is The Heavy Side (Instead Dark Side) which stand for egoism and selfish. (Selfishness weighs people down that's why use Heavy Side). Sith used it and so as they existed, it would cause unbalance. It's because their motivation is entirely selfish whether its about materialistic (such as wealth) or power, they basically a black hole of selfishness as nothing will ever truly satisfy them. The mere existence of a Sith already make the Force unbalanced.

So yeah, I don't consider them marking equinox or solstice especially not because of that reason.

Okay now we enter the headcanon territory of Jedi Culture. So Jedi Holidays, been discussing it with my friends and we come up with several things. 

1. Temple Founding Day

This is the day where the Jedi celebrated the Founding of the Temple. In this day that the Temple would be decorated with many lantern in various places. The temple would be so full of light that it would almost like they are basked with the light sides in that day. There probably a small festival along with it where the Jedi from Younglings to Elders having Arts performance. Music (This can be ensemble performance like Kumi-Daiko that I mentioned in Jedi Music HC post for example), Dance (We sees the early part of Younglings arc that they have some form of Jedi Dance, or doing Lightsaber forms but in more exaggerated and artistic purpose instead), Theatre Performance (About How the Temple Founded!), Poem Reading (Poem that is written by Jedi Artists and performance by Knights or Masters) and some more.

2. Honoring the Dead Day

You see, Jedi as they are, wouldn't focus on their pain and dwelling it instead this would be the time they celebrated the life of people that had returned to the Force. From their ancestors, remembering the accomplishment they have, the legacy they left behind and what kind of person they are remembered for and so on. Then, for people who just recently passed their lineage, friends etc gathered doing small meditation session and talking about them in fond memory instead. 

In Legends, there are Memory Moths, so drawn from it, in this Day the Memory Moth released from the Jedi Monument and letting loose around the Temple. The fun fact is in Chinese Culture, Moth is seen as soul of the deceased person visiting. The Memory Moths served as reference to it, especially how it able to mimic the name of the person that being whispered to it. It was almost like the deceased truly come to visit, bearing the named of the death.

3. Yoda's Birthday

Being Grandmaster and one of the oldest Jedi make him a beloved figures and at first it wasn't a temple-wide celebration but then as time pass, everyone have decide to make it official holiday at some point in his life.

Younglings and Initiates tend to compete to give Master Yoda the best presents while the Padawan usually giving performance of their lightsaber forms in ensemble manner (the Padawans so spending nights after nights perfecting it.) Knights and Masters often instead just congratulate him giving him best wishes.

The highlight of this day for Master Yoda thought, when in this Day they end up spending time in the Hall for feast, how Jedi of all ages able to mingling, comfortable and sharing laughter. That's the best present for Master Yoda because there is nothing he wishes more than peace and happiness for Jedi.

5. New Year Day

Here the little tricky one because the easiest one they will celebrate New Year based on Coruscant and it will be temple-wide celebration and it would be a quite festive day.

Jedi are diverse and respect the birth culture of their people, so if their member wanted to celebrate it, they would support it. The casual happy new year despite the other Jedi is not part of the celebration would be heard around temple.

6. Celebration of the Teaching Day

Since teaching is essentially their calling, Jedi would have a day where they could appreciate their teachers and not limited to Jedi but people who come to visit and being guest teacher or just generally taught them something.

Younglings/Initiates/Padawans tend to either make cards (which usually why they likes the teaching and how they appreciates the teacher) or making hand-made stuffs (it can be something like Origami (folded paper)) or both or little performance.

Jedi Knights and Jedi Masters who also wants to appreciate their Masters tend give practical things like food or drink and thank them for the teaching.

The guest teachers or people have teach them things on this day would get cards or package where they would says start 'It's Celebration of Teaching Day in the Temple, I want to say how thankful I am :)' and continue with how much they appreciate what the teachers teach them.

Teaching is, after all, Jedi's love language. So the idea of this day is because of it.

Since Taka being in Les Misrables as Javert has been briefly mentioned, my brain went back into musical theater mode haha! I have been thinking, what if Taka had helped one of the stage hands into being comfortable and confident enough to perform on stage in one of their upcoming plays? Perhaps either Peko or Kirumi would be the stage hand that he helps (I kinda hc them both as Taka’s best friends other than Mondo, Chi, Hiro, Hina, and Sakura, but if you don’t want to use Peko or Kirumi, that’s okay)! They could be like a closeted theater nerd that’s always wanted to perform on stage but felt like they weren’t good enough, until they see Taka perform on stage and decide to ask him for advice and practice an audition with him. They could even impress their crush with this. Like I said, you can use whatever character you want as the person Taka helps, Peko and Kirumi just happened to pop into my head lol! If you don’t like that idea, there’s also this;

So I went back to your original two and was like...who can I pair them up with. Normally I associate Peko with Fuyuhiko but in my AU he's with Kazuichi. Then I thought maybe Kaede for Kirumi but I like Rantaro with Kaede.

• Death Note - The Musical is not the only show that Taka performs in.

• Since he joined up at the beginning of his second year, and the group perform a show every term, he gets to be in a few more.

• Somehow he always lands with a major role, even when he insists someone else should take the male lead.

• And he's gathered quite a following (much to Leon's conflicting delight and jealousy).

• But there's one person in particular that stands out for Taka.

• Maki Harukawa.

• Since being forced by her friends (Kaito mostly) to join a club, she decided it would be easy work being a stagehand.

• She doesn't have to speak to anyone really - just make sure things are where they're meant to be at the right time.

• She can definitely do that.

• She too started the same time that Taka did and was looking around backstage with a club member during auditions.

• And there was something about his performance that had her dazed.

• He isn't the greatest singer in the world - there's plenty of Ultimates out there with that title.

• But his conviction and his passion stirred something in her that made her want to hear him again.

• So even though a cruddy role backstage was all she had, she was allowed to sit and watch him perform every night and see him transform from the awkward, uptight boy everyone knows him as into something beautiful.

• And she can see, out in the audience, all the girls (and guys) out there swooning over him, hearts in their eyes every time he opens his mouth.

• Of course, Maki doesn't want EVERYONE's eyes on her. That'd be too tiring.

• But she does want someone's eyes.

• Kirumi Tojo - the only other girl in her class that seems to be on her wavelength.

• They interact in class, but outside of that they spend no time together.

• Maki is always dragged by Kaito and Kokichi (with Shuichi being dragged along too) and Kirumi is always at committee meetings.

• But Maki thinks she's amazing - so mature and so beautiful...

• And for a moment, she imagines being on that stage alongside Taka, performing her heart out and seeing the hearts in Kirumi's eyes...

• No. Ridiculous. HER? On STAGE? No. No no no.

• Taka forgets something backstage one afternoon and has to head back in.

• But as he gets to the door, he can hear someone singing. A voice he's not heard before.

• And peeking in, he can see Maki on stage.

• Wow, she has a lovely voice!

• Barging in (and terrifying the girl) he tells her how amazing she is and that she should consider a role in the next performance.

• He's met with coldness and a glare that most people are afraid of - but he carries on anyway.

• 'I'd love to sing alongside you!'

• Ah. Just for a second that image flashes in Maki's mind - and Taka's better at reading expressions now so picks up on it.

• Not that she's going to admit it! No! No way...

• The auditorium door opens and Taka sees a gooey look on Maki's face for a second before she composes herself and turns away.

• Looking behind him, he sees Kirumi there in the doorway, obviously waiting for him so they can go to their committee together.

• Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

• An idea pops into Taka's head and with a big grin, he calls back to Kirumi.

• 'Ah, Miss Tojo! You know Miss Harukawa, don't you?'

• WHAT IS HE DOING?!?! Maki stops dead, absolutely mortified.

• 'Of course. She and I are classmates.'

• 'Wonderful! Did you know that she will be performing with me in our next show?'

• WHAAAAAAT?!?!??!?!!

• 'Oh! No, I didn't realise she had an interest in theatre.'

• 'She called me here to help her for the upcoming auditions. I'm sure she'll get the part! It would be wonderful if you could come support her.'

• Maki finds her body turning slowly to face the both of them, seeing that Kirumi has come further inside to stand by the stage.

• And she's got a smile on her face and a fond expression.

• 'It would be my pleasure.'

• Well. She can't back out now. And Taka's grin says just as much.

• He insists that to the club that she have a role opposite him and personally helps her rehearse.

• And as the time goes on, she starts to relax - until the moments before the show.

• She's FREAKING OUT and no one can help...

• Until Taka rests his hands on her shoulders and says:

• 'Focus on me. No one else. Just focus on me.'

• So she does and the performance is yet another hit.

• And as they're taking a bow and Maki searches the audience (casually ignoring her idiot friends whooping) and finds exactly who she's looking for.

• And she finally sees the hearts in her eyes. Just for Maki.

Some thoughts about Melanie Cavill and her beautiful mind. 

I agree with others that Mel is neurodivergent/ autistic. I think this helps explain her passion and focus, and also why, in S1, she was so adept at “putting on a mask” and pretending to be someone else. Basically, I think she had been masking in some way or another her entire life, so when the time came to create the “Hospitality Melanie” persona, it was already second nature. 

I think this also explains why it took Melanie so long to see Wilford for the monster he is, and why he was able to control/ manipulate her for most of her life, despite her superior intelligence.  On that note, here are some of my MC HCs (I hope it goes without saying, I don’t mean to imply that anything described below is necessarily an “autistic” trait. This is simply how I imagine Melanie the person, who also happens to have autism.)

1. Before meeting Wilford, Melanie struggled to find her place in the world. She dropped out of high school because she was bored with the lessons and couldn’t be bothered to complete assignments. She had no friends, and most adults wrote her off as a trouble-maker.

Her family was poor, so she “borrowed” things they needed for the farm (some of them rather LARGE things), which earned her a juvenile record for theft. 

2. Because of this, Melanie believed she’d never go to college. That was fine, she thought, she wouldn’t fit in there. She didn’t fit in anywhere. The only person who didn’t make her feel like a misfit was her father, John Cavill, who was a patient man who loved farming, and who taught his daughter everything he knew about the trade. 

It wasn’t long, however, before John ran out of knowledge to share. Melanie was 8 when her father took her to the local library. “So,” he said. “What do you want to know?” 

“Everything.” 

From that moment on, John watched his daughter surpass him in every subject, every field of study. It was hard, not because he was prideful, but because it felt like he was losing her. But not completely. At least, not yet. 

Because for years after that, Melanie would seek her father out, and she’d talk at length about the topics that interested her, and he listened, enjoying her company, even after he ceased to understand a single word that came out of her mouth. 

I mean that literally. 

“Certains nématodes posent problème en agriculture parce qu'ils parasites des plantes ou des animaux d'élevage, mais la plupart stimulent la croissance en améliorant le cycle des nutriments.” “Mellie.” “Oui, papa?”  “You’re speaking French again.”  “Oh. Sorry.” 

3. Melanie’s mother was a different story. Shanon Cavill, nee Shanon O’Connell, was stern, intelligent and, due to an undiagnosed mood disorder, emotionally unstable. She’d lose her temper at the drop of a hat, and although she loved her daughter, she didn’t understand her. Shanon didn’t understand why someone so brilliant was throwing her life away. Dropping out of school, getting arrested, fooling around with boys, and girls, who didn’t care about her, and who only got her into trouble. 

Shanon said many words in the heat of many moments that she could never take back. Foolish. Reckless. Lazy. Quitter. 

The day Joseph Wilford showed up at the farm looking for Melanie, Shanon peered at him through the porch screen door. “Did she steal something from you?” she asked. “Because whatever it is, we can’t pay you back, so you’d best just leave before I let the dogs out.” 

Looking back, Wilford deeply regrets not heeding the lady Cavill’s advice. 

4. Melanie saw Wilford as her missing piece. Melanie always knew she was “bad with people”. To her, human beings were confounding black boxes.  INPUT > [???] > UNEXPECTED RESULT, USUALLY BAD. 

But Wilford. Joseph Wilford was a social magician! She watched in awe. Everyone adored him. He’d tell a joke and everyone laughed. Anything they needed for their work - funding, IP rights, permits, materials, labor - he procured through sheer force of charisma. 

He was just like her, except he had that one missing piece. 

It was the apparent gap in their interpersonal skills that led Melanie to conclude that she could never be a leader like him. That’s why she allowed Wilford to take credit for her work, why she believed him when he said it was better for all involved if she remained a ‘silent partner.’ 

That’s also why she never tried to run Snowpiercer as herself. Despite having all the skills, Melanie couldn’t imagine anyone would follow her leadership. 

(I think she was wrong about that...) 

5. It was Wilford who sent Melanie to college, and it was Wilford who coached her on how to “mask.” As a sociopath, nearly all of Wilford’s social interactions are theatre. They have to be. So when he met Melanie, he immediately saw what her problem was - the silly girl wasn’t acting! 

So he sat her down one day and gave her a gift. “A chess game?” she said. 

“Not a game. This box contains the secret to the universe.” 

She smiled, but he was serious. As Wilford set up the pieces he explained, “This is the whole world. Every type of person you’ll ever meet is here. Pawns, knights, bishops. They all have their rules, their own little scripts. The trick is, figure them out, while revealing nothing about yourself.” 

She didn’t understand, but in time, she would. Wilford taught her how to survive, but not as herself. He taught her to hide, to blend in, and to trust nobody but him. 

And it worked, to a certain extent. Melanie earned degrees from MIT and Yale, graduating with the highest honors, lauded as a prodigy. A recruiter from NASA asked if she’d be interested in applying for the astronaut program. Elon Musk asked the same thing, but he offered more money. 

Melanie could have worked anywhere. Done anything. But she went back to Wilford, partly out of loyalty, and partly because she believed he was the only person in the world who truly knew her, and saw her, and valued her for who she was. 

They weren’t lovers, but Melanie considered him just as close. For many years, he was her one partner and closest friend. 

6. When Melanie got pregnant with Alex, she was afraid she’d be a bad mother. She worried that she wouldn’t have that mysterious ‘maternal instinct’ that seemed to come naturally to other women. She thought maybe she was “broken” in a very particular way and shouldn’t be a parent. 

Those worries disappeared once Alex was born. More than that, Melanie’s deep connection with Alex made her consider that maybe she’d underestimated herself. In motherhood, Melanie found courage. She built stronger friendships with Ben & Jinju, and she began to interact with Wilford on a more equal footing. 

She started speaking up about things she never dared interfere with before. She didn’t like the company’s environmental practices. Their anti-union stances. Their parental leave policies were atrocious. Wilford was beside himself. He didn’t recognize her. He couldn’t wrap his mind around what happened. 

At a loss, Wilford blamed his catch-all word for human behavior that fell outside his bounds of understanding. 

“Sentimentality.” 

7. When Melanie lost Alex, she lost faith in herself. It wasn’t just the grief, or the guilt, though those were enormous. Melanie understood now: Alex was her missing piece. Alex was the one thing that made Melanie feel like she could do anything.

It cannot be overstated what a colossal blunder it was for Wilford to return Melanie’s superpower to her. He thought he was being clever in saving Alex, but from the moment Melanie blew up Big Alice’s connector and Alex gave her that grudging look of respect, all bets were off. 

Melanie remembered who she was. The awakening started with Layton, but it ended with Alex. 

Final thoughts: Melanie’s particular neurology has been a hot-button issue in the past, so I’m a little nervous posting this. Please reach out to me with any comments or concerns.
