Fanfic Writers Appreciation Day
This year I participated in @renegadeguild's Renegade Loves Fic (Writers) event for the first time, in which we celebrate Fanfic Writers Appreciation Day by binding two copies of a fanfic we love and sending one copy to the author.

I chose Florigenesis by @nientedal (and its sequel your roots send down to grow as an epilogue), which is a Megamind/Roxanne hanahaki story. Or, in the words of the author, "Less 'Hanahaki' and more 'mutually-requited pining with flowers thrown in for flavor.' " I loved the imagery of the flowers and had a lot of fun typesetting it with as many floral motifs as I could fit in it.
The flower Megamind ends up coughing up for Roxanne are dahlias, so I found some open-source images of dahlias sourced from books in the public domain to use as scene breaks and as a watermark behind the table of contents. Additionally, I used the font "Lime Blossom Caps" to use as a drop-cap at the beginning of each chapter. The text ended up being a bit more than 380 pages.
This is the first time I've done a book partially covered in paper instead of all in bookcloth. Before gluing the paper to the cover, I sealed it with homemade paste wax, which I think turned out really well. The book has a lovely feel to it--I'll definitely do some more partial-paper covered books in the future.
Also for the first time I sewed a headband on each book. It turned out fairly well. I used waxed linen thread as the core (the waxed thread that came with my bookbinding kit--its braided and so thick I can't imagine using it for sewing signatures).
Additionally, I got myself a chisel (and sharpening kit) to trim the edges, which turned out much better than expected. I still don't have something to hold the book horizontally while I trim so I'm still trimming vertically for now, but it turned out much better than trying to use a utility knife like I was before.
Technical Details:
Quarto size (quarter-letter, about A6)
Sewn-on made endpapers
Rounded but not backed
Sewn-on headbands (no tailbands)
Chisel-trimmed pages
Oxford hollow
The linen tapes are frayed and glued to the exterior of the boards
Sewn-on bookmark
Things I especially liked about this bind:
CHISEL TRIMMING! I knew it would up my game to have a chisel to trim pages with rather than just a utility knife, but WOW, it made SO MUCH difference! Once they were finished I kept petting the edges of the pages because they were just so soft and smooth and perfect.
I really like the sewn-in headbands. I'd probably use a bit thicker core next time, but they turned out well and I'm pleased with them.
I'm surprised how much I liked the paper-covered covers. I had planned on most of my books being full-bookcloth with this one as an exception, but with how much I like the look and feel of this book I will probably switch that around and do just quarter-bound with bookcloth unless I have a good reason to make an exception.
For the made endpapers, I glued just the edge of the endpaper to the white instead of the whole page. I quite like it--it's a lot more flexible this way and doesn't have a "noticeably glued-together" feel to it.
The wax paste turned out really well. It makes the cover feel very "finished" instead of just like scrapbook paper, which is what it actually is.
Things I'd like to improve for next time:
Because the text block is rounded but not backed, there's a little wrinkling of the endpaper glued to the board right at the hinge so it doesn't pull when the book is opened all the way. I'll have to experiment a bit more with this to figure out a good hinge for a rounded-not-backed book.
Although I love the flower cover, it's a little busy to have the title legible on the cover, so it's only on the spine. That's not a bad thing, but I'm not sure what I would do if I definitely did want a title/design on the cover itself.
I think honestly there's not very much to improve for next time. I'm very pleased with how this one came out--it's very nearly perfect.

a very good list, i can vouch for wawak personally. here are my own additions.
https://bigzfabric.com/collections/fabric-sold-by-the-yard - fabric, great for costume and furs
https://stonemountainfabric.com/ - fabric, good deadstock, i got really nice silk on sale here
https://www.dickblick.com/ - arts and crafts, all the paints and drawing materials, paper, sculpture
https://www.jetpens.com/ - pens, paper, journals, stickers, stamps, scrapbooking supplies, all from japan! this place is /dangerous/ for me and now i curse you with it
https://tandyleather.com/ - real leather and leather crafting supplies, along with dyes and kits. havent used their online store, just their brick and mortar store, but its very good quality and the people there know what theyre selling and can give you lots of advice
https://artistcraftsman.com/ - arts and crafts, i gotta give a shoutout to my favorite. their online range isnt great but if you have a location nearby, it is so worth it. they have student and teacher discounts and are employee owned
havent used these but they get good reviews
https://www.webstaurantstore.com/ - cooking/bakery, this place is great for baking decorations
https://www.biasbespoke.com/ - sewing notions and fabric, not a wide range but still
https://www.lingsmoment.com/collections/all-flowers - florals, expensive but lots of stuff for arrangements
https://factorydirectcraft.com/index.php - crafts, just about every basic craft supply you need
https://www.xyzbeads.com/ - beads of all kinds
https://www.jerrysartarama.com/ - arts and crafts, like dickblick, lots of art supplies. if you need paint or brushes, double check the prices between here, dickblick and cheap joes
https://cheapjoes.com/ - speaking of, arts and crafts, a classic. if you are bought something on amazon, chances are it was someone buying it through cheap joes.
https://www.woolandcompany.com/ - yarn, expensive but damn, it is refreshing to see so much wool yarn
https://www.averbforkeepingwarm.com/ - fabric, yarn, and dyed to order garments
https://www.tapplastics.com/ - sculpture and plastics, acrylic sheets and resins. they can do custom orders and if you have one in your area, is a great resource
https://www.brickintheyard.com/ - sculpture and propmaking
i am going to warn off denver fabrics/fashion fabric store. theyre the same company, and their business practices are super sketchy, lots of complaints on better business bureau. i did buy through them and i did get my order but… it seems to be a gamble.
im also going to say, be very wary of etsy stores. the one recommended above seems to be legit, but a lot of them now are just dropshipping fronts. if you dont care about where your stuff comes from, just go straight to the source yourself and look it up on aliexpress. chances are, thats where theyre getting their supply from. its cheap and if you dont care about accurate descriptions or shipping times, thats your best bet.
other tips you will commonly see, go to thrift stores, as they often have crafting supplies in bags for cheap, along with lots of half finished donated projects, and fabrics. estate sales will also have stuff like this, so research your area and see where those get posted. look into buy nothing groups in your area as well, people are often giving out their supplies to make room for other things. look into your area for stores, even if theyre niche shops. they will be more expensive but going there to talk to people about projects can lead you to great communities. and finally, please please please go to your local library and look into if there is a local makerspace.
RIP Joann, now what?
I wanted to make a post I could copy and paste and or link when I see folks asking where to buy fabrics when Joann is gone. I sew a lot, generally between 100-200 items a year and I don't do it on a big budget. Stores are not in a particular order.
Notions:
Wawak.com - start here, mostly stay here. Wawak is a supplier for professional sewing businesses and have the prices that show it. I will not pay for gutermann Mara 100 anywhere else. I buy buttons, tools, thread, and most elastic here.
Stitch Love Studio - this is where I buy lingerie supplies https://www.etsy.com/shop/StitchLoveStudio?ref=yr_purchases
Fabric:
Fabric Mart - this is one where you want to sign up for emails and never buy unless its on sale. They run different sales every day and they rotate. Mostly deadstock fabrics but I buy more from here than anywhere else. Fantastic customer service and if you watch you can get things like $6 wool suiting or $4 cotton jersey. https://fabricmartfabrics.com/
Fabrics-Store - again, buy the sales not the full price. Sign up for the emails but redirect them to a folder because it is TOO MANY. They stock linen or good but not amazing quality. https://www.fabrics-store.com/
Purple Seamstress - This is where I buy my solid cotton lycra jersey. They have other things, but the jersey is what I'm here for. Inexpensive and very good quality. If you ask she will mail you a swatch card for the solids. https://purpleseamstressfabric.com/
LA Finch - deadstock fabrics with a fantastic remnant selection https://lafinchfabrics.myshopify.com/
Califabrics - mix of deadstock and big brands, easy to navigate and always seem to have good denim in stock. https://califabrics.com/
Boho Fabrics - good variety, nice bundles. I have also gotten some really great trims from here. https://www.bohofabrics.com/
Firecracker Fabrics - garment and quilting fabrics, really nice selection and great sale section. I've bought $5 yard quilting cottons here several times. https://www.firecrackerfabrics.com/
Hancock's of Paducah - Quilting fabric and some limited garment fabric. AMAZING sale section. Do not sleep on the sale section. This is my first stop when buying quilting fabrics. Usually the last stop too. Not particularly speedy shipping. https://www.hancocks-paducah.com/
Itokri - This is something a little different. Itokri is an Indian business with incredible traditional fabrics. Shipping to the US is expensive, but the fabric is so inexpensive it evens out. I generally end up paying like $30 for shipping. Beautiful ikat and block prints. https://itokri.com/
Miss Matatabi - this is a little treat. This isn't where you go to save money, but there are so many beautiful things in this shop. Ships from Japan incredibly quickly. https://shop.missmatatabi.com/
Lucky Deluxe - Craft thrift store, always has an incredible selection and fantastic customer service. I need to close the tab fast because I never go to this website without finding something I need. https://www.luckydeluxefabrics.com/
Swanson's - the OG of online craft thrift stores, but I find their website harder to navigate. https://www.swansonsfabrics.com
Honorary Mentions: I haven't shopped at these places yet but I have had them recommended and likely will at some point.
A Thrifty Notion - https://athriftynotion.com/
Creative Closeouts - https://creativecloseoutsfabric.com/ being rebranded to sewsnip.com on March 1 - quilting deadstock
Hawthorne Supply Co. - I just got this rec and I think I need to not look too closely or I'm going to slip with my debit card. https://www.hawthornesupplyco.com/
This is not an exhaustive list of everywhere you can buy fabric, or even a full list of where I shop. There are SO many options out there in the world. You also need to think outside the fabric store box. I thrift men's shirt fabrics for quilts and sheets for backing fabric. I don't do a ton of in person thrifting and my local stores don't get a lot of craft materials but every thrift store is its own universe and reflects the community it is in. Go out and find something cool.
Oh and final note: Don't shop at Hobby Lobby.

What is Celeste?

I've tried to break free myself when I was creating this kit, I wanted the royalty, elegance, mystical prints, and everything that would make an artist drop their jaw! I'm fully confident this kit will serve you well if you need a kit that could not only inspire you but could teach you something new! Celeste is all about that.

Omg 300+ bracelets!! That's awesome - good luck! I made about 50 for my first show and am planning to do some for my various concerts next year. I would definitely enjoy seeing bracelet photos if you want to share (no pressure if you don't!). And it's fun hearing about the bujo stuff! I'm bujo adjacent - both my best friends do bujo and I love seeing their spreads, but I've never done it myself. What types of inspiration do you use for your bujo and embroidery?
I'm kind of chaotic with crafting like I start a lot of stuff but only finish a few things haha. I'm also coming off of being in grad school for a few years where I didn't craft at all so I'm trying to get back into it. I mainly collage and make bracelets for shows lately and I'm trying to practice painting too. In the past I knit for a few years but idk if it's for me.
i'm thinking of making bracelets for holly & olivia! i'm also going to fall out boy in march, but i don't think i'll be making bracelets for it (i also don't know their stuff very well — like, at all, but a friend wanted to go and i'm always down for concerts + to learn music before i go)!! and then obviously, i've got eras!!! i don't have any recent photos of bracelets, but here and here are some i've posted before !!
i got into bujo because one of my friends was like "oh i'm thinking of starting a bullet journal" and then i got super super super into it for like three years, and then quit in 2020 because well, you know. and then migrated to notion, but have been toying with the idea of returning to bullet journaling/junk journaling/something that combines the two! i really love doing either specific themes with my bullet journal (i.e. i did some bookish themed spreads back in 2019, like red, white & royal blue the week i met casey mcquiston in portland, or musical themed ones — i definitely had an anastasia spread, a waitress spread, etc. depending on what i was currently into / what events were going on in my life at that moment!, definitely a few taylor spreads too!). i also started doing more scrapbook-y styled bullet journal/junk journaling, so saving receipts, etc!! i can dig an old bujo out and post photos for you if you're interested!! and with embroidery, i tend to get kits from etsy! usually something floral, but at some point i want to work on more lettering-y things!! i did cross stitch as a kid, and all the embroidery stuff is self-taught!
a lot of my crafty stuff is a result of being done with grad school (graduated in 2019) and then being in a terrible work environment for a year after → when we started quarantining i realized i didn't really have ... hobbies! i did not know what to do with myself except for read and work and then after a while i realized that was not sustainable and i had to do something else! grad school really sucked a lot out of me, and i think it does the same for a lot of people, unfortunately. i hope you're able to get back into crafting more soon 🤍
i used to paint a lot when i was younger, but haven't in years but i've been thinking of experimenting with painting again — i also really want to go to a local ceramic painting place soon (once i'm no longer suffering from the plague), i used to go to one near school but haven't gone in ages! it's really cool that you used to knit; i've always wanted to learn how to knit! how did you get into knitting + collaging? 🤍
