Do you like Squid Facts? 🔲Yes 🔲No
This valentines day, we thought you might need a little help from cephalopods to celebrate. Get a pack of 20 cards for your classroom, your coworkers, your neighborhood, frankly anyone who needs both a valentine AND a little bit of science to boot.
Get 'em here: https://squidfacts.bigcartel.com/
Proceeds benefit science education nonprofit Skype a Scientist AND the graduate student who designed these cards who is studying octopuses (Meg Mindlin @invertebabe!). Meg is trying to afford to get to a cephalopod neuroscience conference later this year and these cards will help her get there 🫡
Tumblr media
They, of course, come with the classic heart stickers, a range of shades of pink and purple included.

Animal of the Day!
Flapjack Octopus (Opisthoteuthis californiana)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Monterey Bay Aquarium)
Conservation Status- Data deficient (Data inadequate to determine a threat category)
Habitat- Pacific Ocean
Size (Weight/Length)- 20 cm
Diet- Worms; Small fish; Plankton; Small fish
Cool Facts- The flapjack octopus might be a contender for the cutest marine animal. Being a species of umbrella octopus, their parachute shape helps them to swim relatively quickly despite their small size. By funneling water through their arms, the flapjack octopus jet propels itself across the ocean floor up to 1,500 meters deep. Despite the fins on the top of their head looking like ears, the flapjack octopus lacks ears and instead detects sound waves in the water. Female flapjack octopuses lay one clutch of eggs every few years where she lets them fend for themselves with the hope that their numbers will allow a few to survive.
Rating- 13/10 (You made me ink.)

🐙 Daily Cephalopod Fact: 🐙
Flapjack Octopus: *Not to be confused with the Dumbo Octopus* Their maximum size is 7.9 inches in length. They have eight arms (like any other octopus), but these are affixed together in an umbrella shape. However unlike other octopus, they are unable to camouflage by changing skin color and texture. They have a gelatinous body, which spreads into a parachute shape when maneuvering through dimly lit water. They swim by moving their fins, pulsing their webbed arms, pushing water through their funnel for jet propulsion, or all three at once.

Meet the…
Tumblr media
FLAPJACK OCTOPUS!!
Also known as Opisthoteuthis californiana or adorabilis, the flapjack octopus is a species of umbrella octopus!
Named after how they squish down into a pancake like way on the sea floor, they cannot camouflage themselves because of their brightly colored bodies! (oh no:()
They grow to be around 20 inches, their diet is composed of small worms, crustaceans, and other invertebrates, and they live deep under the water on the muddy sea floor!
Their predators are sperm whales, sharks, and seals, however if they are in danger, they will just swim away.

Meet the Geeky duo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FINALLY introducing another set of OCs... meet Cyrus and Scooter, a pair of dweebs set on proving to the world that they're all that and more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🐙 - Cyrus is a snarky and sarcastic flapjack octopus. Guided by independence, she fled her deep sea life for a better one up above. Tech savvy and clever, she's always got something up her sleeve. You never wanna get on her bad side, she's got quite a temper.
Extremely quick witted and well equipped in knowledge related to technology and mathematics, there’s no stopping Cyrus once she gets a project started. Sometimes these projects center around getting back at people, she can be quite a bit of a ruthless hacker to the people she despises.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🐠 - Scooter, a passionate lover of the arts, left his distant hometown to pursue his goals of being a theatre actor. He's usually unlucky in his endeavours, giving him a cynical view of the world sometimes. Despite that, he's still a pretty chipper parrotfish.
Talented in many things related to the art of drama, Scooter has always been interested in European performance arts ever since he was a kid. He’s got a good voice, and he’s professionally trained in piano, but sometimes he gets caught up in his own anxieties and fumbles on stage.
Sorry for the long read, tldr... NERD EMOJIS!

Would it be wrong to say that the only reason Angel had rectangle pupils is because Nintendo was trying to make her and Marina look like the stereotypical octopus like the outfits they were put in, because octoling species who have those pupils don’t have them in the same way. Rectangle pupils evolved into infinite pupils.
Tumblr media
Edited and unedited photos of Angel just so people who have no clue as to what I’m talking about can see what I’m talking about
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Angel’s species has round pupils, I’m being so serious when I say she’s a 7 arm octopus. This isn’t even a headcanon like I have probably devoted weeks worth of hours trying to figure out her species, and it also sucks because it’s a species that the average person would have no clue about so there isn’t a lot of research on them despite being the 2nd largest (sized, not population) octopus species (Angel why do you have to be so difficult all the damn time!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adding this in here too Octavio is a dumbo octopus (might change) and the average octoling is a flapjack because of the round pupils as well (they aren’t 7 arm octopuses too because their hair arms are the same length when naturally grown out)
