Hi!!, I was thinking about doing a 1870-1880 savefile, any advice? like lots to build or something like that :)
Hello !! I'm so sorry it took me so long to answer, I've been very busy this past month. :(
So here is what I'm personally thinking of building for my own save, I hope that might help (if it's not too late) :
in general
some shops (grocer's, baker's, fishmonger's, butcher's, pharmacy, café, bookshop, tailor, photographer …) with apartments above
a covered market
a church/cathedral/chapel and a presbytery
a wash house
gendered schools
a library
one or more factories
a train station
a cemetery
a town hall (that double as a school and library in smaller towns)
public baths
a couple of mansions
a boarding school
for a country town
fields
small and big farms
for a city
a big park with greenhouse full of exotic plants
a department store (like Le Bon Marché, Printemps, La Samaritaine etc)
a high school
a theater
covered passages (as in old timey shopping arcades)
barracks
Obviously these are more suited to french town and cities since that's what my save is made out of, not all builds might apply to where yours is set but hopefully that's still useful to you :)

i think you're onto something with the romance novels world and plot points needing to mirror the kind of outlandishness of the love story. bc the main characters are already inherently acting absurd just by falling madly in love in a month or whatever and then if you add in the contrivances of romance tropes, it starts to feel like whiplash trying to pretend the characters live in any sort of grounded "normal" world. Like when the author adds in a family conflict subplot where the MC is like in absolute shambles because her mom said something slightly passive aggressive at lunch. that reads as more jarring to me than like conflict being something ridiculous that her mom doesn't want her being a marine biologist bc they come from a long line of fishmongers. Give me absurd drama to match the over the top dialogue and character emotions, I knew it would be unrealistic it's a romance novel! I guess this applies more to romcoms, but the same would apply I think to an analogous serious scenario. Or at least that's my take on it
okay so having just finished genuinely the most boring romance novel I have ever read in my LIFE I'm going to expand on this a little so thank you for sending an ask that gives me such a great platform to do that
I personally generally prefer a romance that just gets fucking silly with it, like really outlandish. A Lady for the Duke (Alexis Hall) is obviously the dream, being a whole swoony historical trans-affirming fantasy, but contemporary fake relationship stories can also be fun in their sheer ridiculousness, like Love, Hate, and Clickbait (Liz Bowery), which I actually liked, and Unfortunately Yours (Tessa Bailey), which I did not like but was very funny. and let's not forget queen Helen Hoang's Bride Test, which has a premise that dances perilously close to human trafficking but all works out in the end!!!
BUT HAVING SAID THAT. I don't think that something needs to be totally implausible to be a good romance. two of my very favorites romance novels anywhere ever are Helen Hoang's Heart Principle (no one should be surprised Hoang is on her twice I adore her) and Akwaeke Emezi's You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty. both of these books are very grounded in reality but with very uncommon situations to heighten emotions and add urgency; in Hoang's case it's a character's adult autism diagnosis + death of a parent and in Emezi's case it's a very sudden and #problematic attraction coming out of absolutely nowhere. the stakes are very real, mostly centering around being true to yourself v disappointing your family, but the circumstances are still wild enough to make you say "god DAMN" and keep turning pages. hell, I'll even be extremely generous and include Mistakes Were Made (Meryl Wilsner) which is kind of a flop but does have the intriguing premise of "what if you were fucking a milf but her kid was YOUR BEST FRIEND and it was a secret?"
those are like the two sweet spots TO ME, and this book I just read (which was Thank You for Sharing by Rachel Runya Katz, I feel so bad putting it on blast but I know people are going to ask) really solidified it for me because TYFS didn't fall into either of those categories. I'm going to say something absolutely insane, which is that multiple times while I was reading it I found myself wishing that the book was fanfic, because on its own it just... didn't bring a lot to the table? it falls into the grounded category but doesn't really bring any of those heightened stakes to the story, it's just 330 pages of people in their late twenties complaining about dating and their office jobs. if I wanted that I could just ask my group chat! there's nothing particularly particularly gripping about watching made up strangers do it!
but then I was like oh hang on... if this was two fictional characters who are usually fighting with swords or throwing cars at each other or something this would be so gripping. it's literally the coffee shop AU principle, right? like seeing people in a very mundane setting having an office job and going to a bar is very shrimpteresting when they're normally defusing space bombs. I was explaining this to my housemates and I couldn't think of a straight couple to apply it to (the book is m/f) so I said Naruto and Sasuke, which is crazy because I've never seen a single episode of Naruto, but like. idk Naruto being a museum curator who has to work with Sasuke, a marketing specialist who he had beef with a summer camp 14 years ago, sounds kind of compelling, right? definitely more than just two people I don't know.
there's a post on here that I think about a lot that talks about why advertising a story with tropes doesn't work for original fiction as well as it does for fan fic because knowing the tropes is more helpful when you already have a sense of investment in the characters and their personalities, and I think this is related to that! I think sometimes you NEED to have a wider sense of scope for the characters for them to be interesting in a very mundane setting!
ANYWAY. much to consider, etc.

Still in Do All The Sidequests! mode while I read Solas on read forever so anyway everyone please enjoy Veilguard, a workplace romcom:
iirc Emmrich IMMEDIATELY jumped to this assumption at the top of a more serious conversation
Tumblr media
Bellara advising Emmrich on how to be decisive and less anxious, a topic in which she is of course an expert
Tumblr media
heroic fantasy be like failure to secure academic funding is the key to all villainy and they're right
Tumblr media
I cannot stress enough how this takes place during the scene in which Harding and Taash begin a relationship with each other.
Tumblr media
Arlathan has seen a lot of difficulty and sadness as of late, and now, it's going to see a lot of Strife. and Emmrich. as they do it in a cave behind a waterfall.
Tumblr media
speaking of how old Dalish men are having more fun than anyone else Davrin says this DEATHLY seriously
Tumblr media
Important message from Assan NOT CLICKBAIT
Tumblr media
the more I think about this the funnier it is and the less sense it makes. does Neve put her hat back on when Lucanis comes over and then take it off specifically to signal to Spite to occupy himself? Anyway, Taash, you ask a prying question, you get fucking unhinged answer.
Tumblr media
this is also Lucanis to Taash and it is NOT about his relationship. it is about Taash saying "THE CROWS AXE THEIR REGARDS" and frankly I cannot blame him straight up dropping into Antivan Andrastean swearing. I saw video of this banter in the wild and specifically took out Taash and Lucanis a bunch until I got it because it's SO funny.
Tumblr media
normal water cooler chat about your normal plans with your normal coworker
Tumblr media
I still haven't done this quest because I've been "going to my girlfriend's brother's orienteering-themed funeral" and "saving Hal The Fishmonger from being a blood puppet" and "Learning the ancient history of the Qun from Rowan, Spirit Talker and Sensitivity Reader" but between this and the one where Isabela wants to get Taash, Bellara, and me drunk I gotta go back to the Hall of Valor.

I've been looking for various references to the Cape "snoek horn" (fishmonger's bugle) and came across a story/blog post written phonetically in Kaaps-Afrikaans dialect with English code mixing. certainly worth looking at for anyone interested in Afrikaans and Dutch, to get a sense of what the Cape Town dialect can look like. (the full post is on Jeremy Vearey's blogspot)
but my main reason for sharing, and with my sincere apologies @geschiedenis-en-talen, is the phonetic rendering of the final words of this paragraph :
As djy vannie Tiervlei se lane is en djy kennie vir Boetie Stinkvet tie dan is djy vaak gebore en het annieslaap grootgeword. As djy innie 80's van Tiekie-stage byrie hoek van Balvenie en Connaught verby Bataan se winkel straight orrie sandveld galoeppit dan kô kry djy die begin van dertiendelaan. Nou nerra oppai hoek, daa was Boetie Stinkvet se rooisink disco, smokkie, bioscope, restirant eksekera eksekera.
I stand by what I said, that Afr. "ensovoorts" / Eng. "and so forth" are more commonly said here, but I guess this is proof that this pronunciation does in fact exist at the Cape
with standardised spelling, but maintaining the dialect and code-mixing, the above paragraph would read :
As jy van die Tiervlei se lane is, en jy ken nie vir Boetie Stinkvet nie, dan is jy vaak gebore en het aan-die-slaap grootgeword. As jy in die 80's van Tiekie Stage by die hoek van Balvenie en Connaught verby Bataan se winkel straight oor die sandveld geloop het, dan kom kry jy die begin van Dertiendelaan. Nou net daar op daai hoek, daar was Boetie Stinkvet se rooi sink disco, smokkie [smokkelhuis], bioskoop, restaurant et cetera, et cetera.
English translation :
If you're from the streets of Tiervlei, and you don't know Boetie Stinkvet, then you were born tired and grew up asleep. Back in the 80's, if you walked from Tiekie Stage on the corner of Balvenie Avenue and Connaught Road past Bataan's shop, straight across the sand field, then you'd find yourself at the start of Thirteenth Avenue. Now, right there on that corner was Boetie Stinkvet's red sheetmetal disco, shebeen [speakeasy ?], movie hall, restaurant, et cetera, et cetera.

The Making of a Spymaster: Lord Jalabhar Mooton
Jalabhar Mooton’s path to becoming the spymaster of the Riverlands was not forged in dark halls or whispers but on the flowing rivers and bustling harbors of Maidenpool. From a young age, Jalabhar’s life was intertwined with the culture and currents of his home, and these formative years among the "Canoe Kids" and "Riff Raft" shaped his sharp mind, deep empathy, and ability to navigate both the seen and unseen.
A Childhood on the River
Jalabhar’s early days were spent as one of the "Canoe Kids," a group of young adventurers from all walks of life—petty lords, landed knights, smallfolk, and the so-called “river kids,” orphans of the Riverlands. Maidenpool’s culture embraced these shared experiences, and the Mooton lords were no exception. It was tradition for Mooton boys to join the fray, paddling alongside their peers, building rafts, and exploring the waters. The rivers became a classroom where Jalabhar learned the importance of collaboration, resourcefulness, and adaptability. While his elder brothers followed the Westerosi custom of fostering with noble families, Jalabhar remained in Maidenpool, forging bonds with the boys of the rivers. Together, they ventured beyond the pink walls of Maidenpool, traveling deep into the Riverlands. Jalabhar’s explorations led him to the courts of the Brackens, Tullys, and his mother’s kin, the Pipers, but it was the journeys with his ragtag group of river friends that truly shaped his worldview. From haggling with merchants to sneaking past tolls, Jalabhar developed a keen understanding of trade and the value of knowing who to trust—and when to deceive.
Lessons in Trade and Hustling
Maidenpool’s location as a trade hub exposed Jalabhar to the art of commerce from an early age. He watched fishmongers haggle over a catch, saw merchants barter over silk and spices, and listened to the whispers of deals made over tankards of ale. To the "Canoe Kids," trade was a game—a challenge to see who could fetch the best price for a freshly caught trout or a basket of river clams. For Jalabhar, it became something more: a realization that power often flowed through coins and connections as much as through swords. A lesson he thought would be valuable in forging his own place in the world in a time when it wasn't know he would be the ruling lord of his house. Jalabhar’s mother, a sharp-eyed woman of House Piper, played an essential role in these lessons. On occasion, she would join Jalabhar on the rivers, her presence a mix of guidance and silent scrutiny. She stood watchful on the prow of their canoe, her gaze always sharp, her posture unshakable. It was from her that Jalabhar learned the art of observation—of reading a man’s intentions from his stance, his tone, or the way his eyes shifted. These lessons, given without words, would later serve him well in the shadowy world of espionage.
Building Networks and Understanding Power
Jalabhar’s frequent journeys to other noble houses instilled in him a deep understanding of the Riverlands’ political landscape. He saw firsthand the simmering tensions between the Brackens and Blackwoods, the power wielded by House Tully, and the quiet strength of the Pipers. Unlike his brothers, who were fostered as part of alliances, Jalabhar’s interactions were more organic, born from camaraderie and curiosity rather than duty. This allowed him to form genuine connections—not just with lords and ladies but with the servants, stewards, and smallfolk who often held the keys to a household’s secrets. His time among the "river kids" also gave Jalabhar an understanding of the margins of society. Orphans and wanderers, these children survived through cunning and grit. They taught Jalabhar how to listen for whispers, how to notice what others overlooked, and how to move unnoticed in a crowd. These lessons, learned in the spirit of childhood games, became the foundation of his ability to gather intelligence and maneuver through the intricacies of court life.
Lessons in life
Jalabhar learned early on that the river cared nothing for titles or birthrights. Out there, among the currents and reeds, he wasn’t a lordling. He was just another boy in a canoe, jostling for space, for respect, and, often, for survival. There was no deference to his name among the "Canoe Kids." If he hesitated, another boy would shove him aside. If he clung too tightly to the comfort of his upbringing, the river would quickly strip him of it. He remembered one afternoon when they had been fishing just beyond Maidenpool’s harbor. The boys were competing to see who could haul the best catch from the river. Jalabhar, used to the feasts of his father’s hall, had questioned why they fought so fiercely over fish. He had hooked a plump trout and struggled to pull it in when another boy reached over and snatched it clean off the line. Frustrated and out of breath, Jalabhar had turned to his boyhood companion, Xhondo, the son of a local fisherman, and shouted, "Why are you all fighting like this? I have fish at home—more than I could eat. Why should I fight for it here?" Xhondo stared, his face fixed with a mixture of disbelief and scorn. “This isn’t about the fish,” he said, tossing Jalabhar’s catch back into the water with deliberate carelessness. “This is about being a man. What are you without your walls, Jal? Without your name? Without your father’s coin? If you give away your fish—” He paused, leaning in close, his voice low but sharp. “—you are food. Don’t be food.” The lesson stuck. It was there, on the margins, that Jalabhar began to see himself differently—not just as a Mooton, not just as a lordling protected by pink walls and privilege, but as a boy who needed to carve his place in the world. It wasn’t about the fish; it was about respect. It was about survival. Xhondo's words became a mantra to him in the years to come, a reminder to always hold his ground, to never show weakness, and to know when to fight for what was his. The river taught him that survival wasn’t just about power; it was about perception. If others saw you as prey, they would treat you as such. The trick was to make them see something else—something stronger, something untouchable. To stand in the margins and yet remain untouchable, unyielding, a predator among predators.

Hi, I'm sure doing .
Just joking. Thank you for the well wishes, apologies it took me so long to get back to you. I've been inactive for a reason which I may talk about in greater length in a different post on another day. For now, however, your wish is my command.
In Retrospect, The Signs Were All There - Unreleased Chapter Nine Excerpt
"Village Spirit Team is a lame name," Kakashi said after the assembly of forgettable civilians shuffled out of the Hokage’s office.
Minato hummed and shuffled his papers into a neat pile. "I think it’s endearing."
"I don't see why..." Kakashi trailed off as Minato's eyebrow rose. "It isn't... clear to me why my presence is needed at this... village... party."
Minato's eyebrow lowered, and Kakashi exhaled a quiet breath.
When Minato gave his signal, Kakashi stretched his tight muscles and put his eye to rest. The snapback was predictably awful, and he braced himself preemptively. For a moment he considered the low thrum of his drained chakra slogging through his system and wondered when it'd become a forgotten ambiance.
"It would be best we rested well, we have a long day ahead of us," Minato said and Kakashi rolled his eyes out of sight - every day was long - and then immediately cringed because what if Minato knew somehow.
He risked a glance back. Minato's face was as serene as ever, his signature look. Phew.
On the day of the Village Spirit Team announcement, the extensive production of the event smacked any snide comments from his slack-jawed face. Shinobi and civilians alike adjoined in a temporary cluster of gazebos destined to be replaced with a permanent structure, a building they would call the village hall.
Ridiculously portioned canapes floated around with civilian caterers. Servers offering champagne flutes patterned and intersected their movements at equal intervals. Kakashi couldn't help but draw up mental schemes as if he were cataloguing guard rotations.
Fairy lights entwined with the skinny wooden support beams, linked up to a generator half hidden by table cloth sewn together from doilies. A lone chūnin stood guard on the off chance an enterprising idiot blew the thing up. Besides him, the rest of the guards were far less visible and light on the body count. Likely due to the heavy presence of infamous hidden leaf shinobi mingling with the rest of the guests.
Kakashi stood in one corner of the largest gazebo, adjusting his position as needed to keep his comparatively small stature hidden behind the crowd. Minato had originally deposited him by the punch stand in full view of several bored guests fishing for conversation. The moment the fishmonger turned his eyes to him, he fled.
The crowd quieted and rippled towards the stage. Kakashi couldn't see Minato, but he could hear his voice. He'd forgone a microphone but his audience were captivated and his words projected.
Privy to the script, Kakashi slipped out and headed to the smallest gazebo, home to various spare supplies and, most importantly, the generator.
Read Chapters 1-8 here. Hopefully, 9 will join them soon.
